    Description:    The water-soluble ionic composition of atmospheric aerosols is a key parameter for estimating its anthropogenic or natural origin. This evaluation depends on the reliability of the performed measurements. The differential approach for the evaluation of the measurement uncertainty was used for estimating, separately, the uncertainty associated with the extraction step, by difference from the observed intermediate precision and the combination of all the other uncertainty components affecting the estimated intermediate precision. The intermediate precision was estimated from the difference of results of the analysis, in different days, of several pairs of filters resulting from cross-changing of their halves. The precision associated with the symmetry of filters division, affecting the homogeneity of studied combined pairs of filters, was subtracted from the observed dispersion of results. The resulting detailed model of measurement performance allowed defining strategies for cost of analysis or magnitude of measurement uncertainty reduction. Measurements are fit for the analysis of urban aerosols since the expanded relative measurement uncertainty is smaller than a target value of 30 %.     Description:    This paper demonstrates the use of the multivariate analysis for the quick and easy evaluation of the experimental results from the homogeneity test of two new certified reference materials (CRM) of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API): metronidazole and captopril. The principal component analysis (PCA) and the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) indicated that some results from the homogeneity test were statistically different when the concentrations of all API impurities were considered simultaneously. Through the use of these statistical tools, it was possible to reduce the standard uncertainty due to between-bottle (in)homogeneity ( u bb ) and consequently the combined standard uncertainty of the certified reference materials ( u CRM ) with 95% confidence level.     Description:    In this paper, it is argued that the SI system has not carefully enough taken into account the differences that exist between stoichiometry and physics, and because of this neglect forced the kind-of-quantity amount of substance into a false form. The mole is not a unit such as the metre, the kilogram, and the second. It is a “unit” only in the sense in which purely mathematical scaling factors can be called units.     Description:    The Federal Institute for materials research and testing (BAM) in cooperation with the Fachhochschule Münster has developed a new certified polymeric reference material, BAM-H010. The reference material consists of acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terpolymer (ABS) and has been doped with different contents of the elements Br, Cd, Cr, Hg and Pb. The monitoring of these elements is demanded in the EU directive 2002/95/EG, commonly referred to as RoHS. We have shown that the uncertainty contribution of the thermal long-term stability ( u stability ) is negligible compared to the contribution to the uncertainty caused by the method used for the characterization of the elemental content and the batch inhomogeneity ( u homogeneity ). The stability of the ABS material during exposure of the samples with hard X-radiation leads to a degradation of the ABS matrix with either long- or short-chain products.
