    Description: The Finnish novelist Kaarlo (Kalle) Alvar Päätalo’s (1919–2000) main work, the Iijoki series, consists of 26 novels (comprising ca. 17 000 pages) and was written in 1971–1998. In this book the text corpus in Kielipankki concerning Päätalo’s works is introduced to the readers, as well as the possibilities of digital text mining. This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful.

    Description: In this book [titled Home, welfare work and vulnerability] the authors take the reader on welfare workers’ home visits to clients in need of support in their living. Welfare workers refer to professionals in health and social care who in the book are represented among others by social workers, social care workers and nurses. The main concepts of the book are home, welfare work and vulnerability and these are contemplated from different angles. Welfare work entails encountering people who are in vulnerable situations in the midst of their everyday lives. They may need support in coping with their mental health, with physical illnesses, with the challenges of achieving sobriety and recovery or perhaps with the difficulties accompanying old age. On the one hand their ability to act is limited and weak but on the other they have many kinds of strengths and resources. The book addresses a significant turning point in welfare services and work at which the objective is defined as the right of every individual to their own home and making living at home feasible for as long as possible. In the last fifty years or so many societal factors have made possible the dismantling of institutions, the reduction of places and the shortening of stays in institutions, the further development of care in the community, the construction of small residential and care facilities and most recently the further development of services to be taken into people’s homes. The last stage of this dismantling of institutions is referred to in the book as the “home turn”. As a societal change the home turn is complex – and that is how it is approached in the book. When one’s own home is the main place in which welfare policy and work are implemented, it is important to scrutinize more closely what actually occurs there and what special issues are connected to this given context. The book offers a timely point of view on the development of welfare services and the grass-root level welfare work done in the homes. It draws on interaction research based on ethnomethodology and human geography. Research data consist of recordings of home visits, researcher’s field diaries and interviews with clients and workers. The work includes both chapters providing conceptual and theoretical overviews and empirical research on the encounters between client and worker(s) on home visits. Welfare work accomplished in people’s homes entails many tensions and ethical issues which are analysed in the book and made visible through the means of research.

    Description: This edited volume discusses multiple job holding as part of Finnish working life. The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers. According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims. This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.

    Description: The volume is a comprehensive handbook of oral history and memory studies in Finland. The Finnish research field has originally emerged at the collaborative intersection of history, folklore studies, and ethnology. Since then, this field has developed into vibrant multi- and cross-disciplinary arena characterized by a strong focus on methodological issues related to memory in culture and theoretical engagement with studies on narration and processes of remembering. The chapters of the book explore the perspectives on the production of memory-based knowledge in oral history interviews and collection campaigns of written reminiscences. Moreover, the book introduces versatile methodological approaches to the study of memory and memories, ranging from narrative to corpus analysis, and investigates the multiple media of remembrance from documentary film to museum exhibition. The chapters of the book also engage the field’s disciplinary position and interrogate the potentials and challenges related to the application of the methods of oral history research and the use of memory-based knowledge beyond academia in political, societal, and community-based projects.

    Description: De Friese adel van de late middeleeuwen opereerde in een niet-feodaal gebied dat lange tijd geen landsheer kende. Hadden de leden, hoofdelingen genaamd, zich uit de boerenstand omhooggewerkt of vormden ze vanouds een gesloten stand? Hoe zat het met hun vermogen? Dit boek zoomt in op Rienck Hemmema en zijn vrouw Ath Roorda. Zij exploiteerden in de jaren 1569-1573 een boerderij in Hitzum onder Franeker. Uit Riencks Rekenboeck blijkt dat hij geen eigenerfde boer was, maar een edelman met een royale levensstijl en meer inkomsten dan uit die ene boerderij. Een ruimtelijke reconstructie van zijn bezit en dat van zijn voorgeslacht toont hoe agrarisch kapitaal per generatie werd gevormd en overgedragen. Dit beeld wordt getoetst aan een Quote 200 uit 1513 en huwelijksakten uit 1450-1550. Een belangrijke conclusie is dat de Friese adel getalsmatig omvangrijk was, met veel families die leefden van twee of drie boerderijen. De figuur van de edelman-boer kwam dus vaak voor.

    Description: As a result of society’s increasing digitisation, the police have ever more opportunities to collect, investigate and combine huge amounts of personal data using advanced technology. Examples are provided from recent cases where police have gained access to millions of encrypted messages from various servers, including Ennetcom, EncroChat and Sky Global. However, the current legal framework is, as yet, ill-equipped to deal with this new reality. Partly for this reason, legislators are facing new questions about how the (further) processing of data in detection should be regulated by law. Commissioned by the WODC, this study examines the legal safeguards in criminal justice data collection in relation to the legal safeguards governing the processing of these data. The Code of Criminal Procedure mainly focuses on the collection of data and to a much lesser extent on its further use, but this may involve a (fresh) invasion of citizens’ privacy. The Police Data Act contains some provisions to data processing, but the relationship with the Dutch Code of Criminal Procedure is not entirely clear. This study identifies the requirements and safeguards under European law for the processing of data for criminal justice purposes. Further inspiration is drawn from experience with the Intelligence and Security Services Act 2017 in which powers of collection and (further) processing are regulated in a single law. Finally, it explores how, in several countries (Germany, Belgium and Norway), the requirements arising from European law have been translated into legal regulations and how these regulations are designed. This study provides tools that legislators can use to reconsider the methods of standardisation and legal regulation design to better protect citizens' privacy. The recommendations thus focus on strengthening the legal framework on data processing and its supervision by creating an explicit legal framework in the Code of Criminal Procedure and establishing an independent supervisor focused on the processing of personal data by investigative authorities.

    Description: Yearbook for Dutch Book History, Volume 29/2022 Education and Pedagogy The Yearbook for Dutch Book History publishes articles in the Dutch and English language on all aspects of the book history of the Low Countries. The central theme of Volume 29 (2022) of the Yearbook is ‘Education and Pedagogy’. Contributions to the volume encompass a broad scope. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are discussed from the perspectives of Catholic and Protestant schoolbooks, and their roles in contemporary theological disputes, as well as the manner in which the Disaster Year (1672) was canonised in the Nieuwe Spiegel der Jeugd (New Mirror of Youth), which was repeatedly in print between 1674 and 1780. Later periods are treated by contributions detailing handbooks for artists in the nineteenth century and the illustrations of Cornelis Jetses in Bremer schoolbooks. Knowledge and illustrations of the clitoris stand at the heart of a contribution on biological education. The section of thematic articles is concluded by an interview with two publishers of schoolbooks who detail contemporary developments in the schoolbook market. Unrelated to the annual theme, the Yearbook also contains contributions on the printer Peter van Selow and his supposed Dutch background, the survival of editions of the Reformed Liturgy in the later sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and an article on so-called Neusboekjes (Nose-books), short comical works from the seventeenth and eighteenth century with pronounced satirical insights into Dutch politics and social norms.

    Description: Nothing exceptional happened in front of the youth association building in Kalajoki on 9 September 1953. There was a minor confrontation between regional police forces and local youth, but hundreds of similar events happened in small municipalities across Finland. The event took about ten minutes, nobody was seriously hurt, and collective feelings quickly calmed down. However, after extensive investigations, the regional prosecutor thought otherwise and prosecuted half a dozen local men for rebellion against the state in January 1954. The district court agreed. The municipality was shocked, and the Finnish society was taken by surprise. The case ended up in Supreme Court. This book analyses why and how the last rebellion in the history of Finland occurred in a tiny municipality on the west coast of Finland. The analysis is based on historical microsociology that integrates the insights of microhistory and microsociology into event structure analysis and collective memory studies.

    Description: Matti Kurikka (1863–1915) is a multi-dimensional and controversial character in Finnish history. He was a playwright, a journalist, a socialist, and a theosophist, as well as a speaker for sexual emancipation and women's rights. Kurikka was born in Ingria, and his activities spanned not only Finland, but also Australia and North America, in both of which he led utopian communities. This biographical study explores Kurikka as a literary and political figure and a builder of utopias, whose life opens fascinating views on the societal and cultural currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book critically re-evaluates earlier research on Kurikka and highlights forgotten phases of his life by using new source materials found in three continents. The sources include digitized newspapers and periodicals, Kurikka's plays and non-fictional books, oral history, and political cartoons.

    Description: An image in technicolor. Fifty years of wars in Vietnam 1940-1990 gives a broad and innovative interpretation of the history of Vietnam between 1940 and 1990. Black and white characterisations, one-sided interpretations and prevailing myths are debunked. Instead, a nuanced and multifaceted picture is given in which the United States is less prominent. History is not only written by the victors and, in this case too, the history of Vietnam during this period cannot be attributed solely to Ho Chi Minh and the success of the Communists in 1975. The internal losers, that is, the other political movements and their leaders, must also be given a crucial place in Vietnam’s history. For example, the civil wars that took place between 1940 and 1990 played an unmistakable role. The older, idealised image of North Vietnam is inaccurate. This country was a dictatorial and oppressive police state. After 1954, the North Vietnamese leaders were embroiled in a fierce power struggle and were largely responsible for the war in South Vietnam. The answer to the question of who the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese nation were also requires a more balanced judgment of non-Communist politicians, such as Bao Dai, Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen Van Thieu. As for the role of international players, initially, it was the Cold War that determined the United States’ interference; later, it was American credibility. In the end, it was the support from China and the Soviet Union that was the deciding factor for North Vietnam’s victory. Important new perspectives are given on the role of minorities, the meaning of ‘a third way’, the devastating effects of the strategy, the role of women and girls, and the mental and cultural aspects of the wars.

    Description: Finnish psychiatric practice has been heavily based on institutionalization, and mental hospitals have played important cultural and historical roles in Finland. Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the bodily, spatial, affective, and multisensory aspects of the memories of patients, relatives, staff, and their children. The memories were collected and archived in the Finnish Literature Society in 2014–2015. These 92 written pieces cover the period from the 1930s to the 2010s. They reflect significant changes in Finnish psychiatry and provide crucial insights into the various meanings of mental hospitals in people’s lives, and the social and cultural forces that shape attitudes to and ideas about mental health problems, psychiatric care, and service users today. Drawing on our backgrounds in history, artistic research, and visual, cultural and literary studies, we provide new ways of reading and interpreting the memories and experiences in psychiatry. The study discusses memory, mental hospitals as lived spaces, the history of Finnish psychiatry and the relation between the memories of the different groups of writers. The chapters approach memories from the perspectives of affects and atmospheres, violence and abuse, everyday life at the hospital in the 1930s, feelings of fear and safety in the memories of the children of the staff, and the historically and culturally contingent tensions between hospitals and homes.

    Description: Finnish Lapland is a historical borderland of Finnish and Sámi cultures. Such a region offers various social-political identifications for people to choose: people may see it possible to identify as Finnish, Laplanders, Lappish or Sámi, for instance. However, the choices have social and political limits, and some identifications are more contested than others. The book examines the processes of identifications in the middle parts of Lapland, just south of the region defined as Sámi homeland in Finland. While the study reveals differences and nuances in people’s thinking, it also shows that there is a recognizable sense of shared cultural specifity around the region. Lapland is conceptualized as an extraordinary place with unusual nature and history, characterized by particular livelihoods (such as reindeer herding) and lively cultural interaction. The book concludes that while Lapland is extraordinary as a historical dwelling region of indigenous Sámi, it may be politically significant to recognize it as a unique borderland of cultures with features of its own.

    Description: This article investigates ‘nose books’ (neusboekjes) and their social functions in the Early Modern Low Countries. Nose books are short literary texts written in the form of joyful ordinances that can be found in bound volumes (Sammelbände). These volumes contain a number of separately printed works, such as almanacs, prognostications and popular texts, which were subsequently bound together. Unlike previous studies, which have largely considered nose books as purely entertaining, this article demonstrates that nose books were initially sold as a form of political satire. As such, they encouraged societal engagement. However, over the course of the eighteenth century, the political undertone of nose books was no longer part of people’s reading experiences. These later readers appreciated the parody of the official ordinance instead.

Alongside contemporary literary authors, the anthology studies diverse contemporary textual phenomena from TV shows to online fan theories and survivalist blogs. The essays compiled in this anthology tentatively apply the theories of the post-postmodern to contemporary texts to see how they might open up for analysis within their new theoretical frameworks or challenge them.The introduction, co-written by all the authors of this volume, introduces the most influential theories of post-postmodernism and contextualizes them within broader intellectual trends of the early 21st Century. The three essays comprising the first part of the volume discuss some of the theories of the postmodern in relation to contemporary works that seem to challenge them. Yet they also strive to clarify and sharpen some of the ideas proposed in the theories of the post-postmodern.The second part of the volume aims to show that it is not only the contemporary texts that move beyond the postmodern – the ways of reading literature and interpreting artworks in different media are also changing.     Description: Contrary to the secularism thesis of the 20th century, religion did not disappear from the Western experience. Rather, religiosity took on new forms, which emphasized individuality, experientiality, and corporeality, and highlighted lifestyle consumption. These new spiritualities came to be understood as the opposite of religiosity: people identified themselves as being not religious, but spiritual. The book examines new spiritualities as a concept, a phenomenon, and a subject of research. It introduces the history of the concept and the different past approaches in the research field, and discusses the diversity of the phenomenon of new spiritualities, especially in 21st century Finland, through various case studies. The book shows the multiple ways in which new spiritualities intertwine with different sectors of the society and blur spirituality’s boundary with religion, health care, art, and popular culture, for example. The book is the first book-length presentation in Finnish of the field of new spiritualities.

    Description: Sofi Oksanen is the most visible and widely discussed Finnish author of the 21st century, yet her novels have gained less attention than her public performances. This study shifts the focus from the author’s persona to her literary art, proposing to read Oksanen’s fiction from the methodological viewpoint of the rhetorical theory of narrative. Accordingly, Oksanen’s six novels published to date – Stalinin lehmät, Baby Jane, Puhdistus, Kun kyyhkyset katosivat, Norma, and Koirapuisto – are considered as examples of authorial rhetoric and ethics, as narrative and textual constructions, and as affective readerly experiences. Instead of only following the rhetorical theory’s emphasis on character, plot, and progression, however, the study develops a new kind of narrative rhetoric, which also pays attention to language and politics. In the study, Sofi Oksanen emerges as a feminist narrative artist, who employs fiction as a serious rhetorical resource in order to say something worthwhile about the past history as well as the contemporary world.

This book explores the ethical challenge of developing an appropriate and respectful relation to other human beings by analyzing a number of historical and cultural cases of relating to the other. The topics range from barbarism, racist stereotypes, female rhetoric, and vampires to philosophical analyses of Finnish writers like Eino Leino and Väinö Linna, and from lyrical depictions of pain to an “antitheodicist” reflection on Primo Levi’s Holocaust writing. A chapter on what it means to take a critical distance to other human beings in the context of the covid-19 pandemic concludes the volume.     Description: On 17 August 1945, two days after the Japanese surrender that also brought an end to the Second World War in Asia, Indonesia declared its independence. The declaration was not recognized by the Netherlands, which resorted to force in its attempt to take control of the inevitable process of decolonization. This led to four years of difficult negotiations and bitter warfare. In 2005, the Dutch government declared that the Netherlands should never have waged the war. The government’s 1969 position on the violence used by the Dutch armed forces during the war remained unchanged, however: although there had been ‘excesses’, on the whole the armed forces had behaved ‘correctly’. As the indications of Dutch extreme violence mounted, this official position proved increasingly difficult to maintain. In 2016, the Dutch government therefore decided to fund a broad study on the dynamics of the violence. The most important conclusions of that research programme are summarized in this book. The authors show that the Dutch armed forces used extreme violence on a structural basis, and that this was concealed both at the time and for many years after the war by the Dutch government and by society more broadly. All of this – like the entire colonial history – is at odds with the rose-tinted self-image of the Netherlands.

    Description: This study explores the narration of existential feelings, or feelings of being in the world, in post-war Finnish prose fiction. The book presents five case studies which address modern individuals’ struggles in boundary situations of their lives. Rigorous readings of the works of Kerttu-Kaarina Suosalmi, Lassi Nummi, Marko Tapio, Tyyne Saastamoinen and Eeva-Liisa Manner all show the influence of French existentialism and its predecessors on post-war Finnish modernism for the first time in literary studies. The outsider figures and their experiences of the absurd, which have enticed the cultural imagination since ancient cults and the Book of Job, connect to the atmosphere of shared melancholy in post-war Finnish culture and society. The study participates in the rich contemporary debates on the effects of literature by focusing on less-discussed aspects of bodily feeling, affect, emotion and mood in late Finnish modernism. The book’s methodological contribution to narrative theory is that it combines a phenomenological analysis of reading with a rhetorical theory of narrative and politically informed, multidisciplinary emotion studies. The five case studies show how modernist outsider prose fiction in Finland resorts to irony, metafiction, allegory and the imaginative to generate ethically challenging narrative tension and an ambivalence of negative and positive emotion in readers. The opposing impulses of the aesthetic response produce an openness of interpretation. This openness provides us with the possibility of a more complex cultural understanding of emotion and ethics in the lives of strangers within literature and outside it.

    Description: Valco (1976–1980) was a state-owned company that manufactured cathode ray tubes for the television industry. The company’s scandalous failure has been widely identified as one of the largest investment errors in Finland’s economic history. This book is the first in-depth study of the roots, events, and consequences of that project. This study analyses Valco from a microhistorical perspective, looking at the numerous factors that led to its failure, from the company’s founding process to investigations after its demise. These events are linked to broader phenomena in economic and business history, such as the changing economic policy of the government and the emergence of global supply chains in the electronics industry. Valco is a significant single case with a concrete impact on Finland’s economic history. First, it changed the general perception of state-owned companies and, because of this, also more general perceptions of the role of the state in the economy. As a result, the initiative to develop the electronics industry was transferred to private companies such as Nokia. Second, Valco’s case revealed the problems of state ownership of companies in a very concrete way. Due to Valco’s failure, the objectives of state ownership were clarified, and the corporate governance system was modernised. In this way, Valco is linked to the modernization of Finnish state capitalism from the 1970s onwards.

    Description: Giving in the Netherlands provides the macro-economic estimates of philanthropy by households, bequests, foundations, corporations and lotteries. The Center for Philanthropic Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has conducted the research since 1995. This is the 13th edition, about giving in the year 2020. Giving in the Netherlands 2022 answers the following questions: How generous are the Dutch in their charitable giving? Who gives to which charitable causes? How has giving behavior developed over the past 25 years? In Giving in the Netherlands, we do not only examine financial contributions, but also volunteer service. Giving in the Netherlands contributes to the visibility of the philanthropic sector in the Netherlands. This is important to legitimize an independent and rapidly growing sector. In 2020, the Netherlands gave € 5.6 billion ($ 5.6 billion, £ 4.9 billion) which equals 0.7% of GDP. As a proportion of GDP, the Netherlands gave slightly less in 2020 than in 2018. In addition, 44% of the population was engaged in volunteer work. Corporations and households give most. Together, corporations and households are responsible for almost 80% of all philanthropy in the Netherlands. While, every source has a favorite charitable cause, health received the most in 2020.

    Description: The book focuses on intangible and tangible heritage, language and vernacular religion of the Ingrians, Setos and Votes, three Finnic ethnic minorities sharing a long-standing identification with the Russian Orthodox faith. Written by 16 authors, the chapters are mainly based on nineteenth- and twentieth-century materials. The research history and collecting of folklore are also discussed.The historical area of the Ingrians and Votes is located in Ingria, adjacent to St. Petersburg, while the Setos have inhabited both sides of the border of southern Estonia and Russia. All three groups live on the borderline of the Eastern and Western Churches and cultural realms.Currently, the Ingrian and Votic languages are extremely endangered, while the Seto language has approximately 12,000 speakers. There is a high local interest in the maintenance and revitalisation of all three languages and cultural traditions.

    Description: In the spring of 2019, 3355 Dutch students in group 6 of primary education from 112 schools participated in eTIMSS-2019. TIMSS stands for Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study and measures worldwide developments in knowledge and skills in science and in attitudes of students who have completed four or eight years of formal education. The 'e' of eTIMSS refers to the digital administration of the test. In the Netherlands, group 6 students took the 2019 TIMSS test on a tablet. The students have been tested in mathematics and science (biology, physics and chemistry and physical geography). The present report reports on the outcomes of TIMSS-2019 in the Netherlands. The remainder of this chapter describes the structure of TIMSS-2019.

A Miracle of St Martin – Utrecht a Happy City tells the story of Utrecht and St Martin. The second part of the book focuses on St Martin’s role in the multicultural twenty-first-century city of Utrecht. The popular St Martin’s Parade establishes a new celebration of the saint with music, street art and a parade of lights. Reflecting on this newly (re-)invented tradition we discover St Martin anew as a symbolic figure representing values of the inclusive city in past and present. The book is lavishly illustrated with images of St Martin and his cult in medieval and modern-day Utrecht.

    Description: The great change in European relations with Russia took place in 1478 when Muscovy replaced the trading Republic of Novgorod as a neighbor of Sweden, Livonia and Lithuania. Western Europe was since that year bordering to a bellicose great power with large resources causing dread. The feelings of dread caused by Russia with Czars like Ivan the Terrible became a standing theme in printed matter as well as politics and the image of Russia became very much similar to the image of Turkey, which threatened Europe from South-East. Various, usually rather negative, stereotype expressions characterized the vocabulary of the 16th century. The Peace of Stolbova in 1617 started a period of successive change. The era of Sweden as a Great Power led to growing knowledge about Russia in almost every respect, but it was still based on the already accepted stereotypes. They started, however, typically to seem more diluted and thin with time. The image of Russia as a threat was to a growing extent replaced by an image of a possibility. The perhaps most remarkable but rather unoriginal printed Swedish description of Russia of the era was Regni Muschovotici Sciographia, published by Petrus Petrejus. At the final stage of Sweden’s era as a great power there was a substantial widening but also polarization of the information on Russia. The Russian reform process during Tsar Peter I also began to influence the minds after the turn of the century in 1700. One of the principal describers of this process was Lars Johan Malm (Ehrenmalm), whose large manuscript about the power of the Russian Empire of that time, Några Anmärkningar Angående det Ryska Rijkets Nuvarande Macht from 1714, never reached the printers due to intervention from censors.

    Description: This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research. The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students’ interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices. Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research. The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions. The book also provides practical examples of how the method can be used in research.

    Description: This collection of articles sheds light on the role of human language in interspecies interaction. The book shows that language is not necessarily what separates us from other creatures. It can also be seen as yet another dimension of human existence that is deeply rooted in our shared history and everyday life with other living beings. This volume contains six individual research articles, two short reviews, an opening introduction to the themes of the book, and an extensive, theoretical closing chapter. The studies draw on methodologies and theoretical approaches including conversation analysis and a cognitive, usage-based approach to grammatical constructions. The book further explores the interfaces of linguistics, biosemiotics, and posthumanism. The studies show how linguistic and interactional approaches can contribute to our understanding of how human and non-human animals communicate with each other during embodied activities, how human language users make sense of interspecies encounters in speaking to or about animals, and how human language is thereby impregnated by the presence of other species.     Description: The present article is the result of the ongoing research of the project ‘The Dynamics of the Classical Reformed Liturgy in the Netherlands: Its Texts and their History’. This Liturgy is recorded in numerous psalm books and Bibles. The question arises how many editions of the Liturgy have not been preserved, or which are not known in publicly accessible collections. To this end, the article analyses a list of forty editions of the Liturgy from the period 1566-1634 that the theologian Gisbertus Voetius included in 1641 in a book entitled Catechisatie Over den Catechismus der Remonstranten. The article examines in particular the extent to which a tried and tested statistical analysis can be helpful in determining the value of this list. The article concludes that the data provided by Voetius not only provides information about a number of specific lost books, but, taking into account a number of uncertain factors, also offers an indication of the probable total number of editions containing the Liturgy that were originally published and are now untraceable.

What exactly is their relevance and meaning? And how can software, artificial intelligence or other data science techniques help with this? Methods of systematic case law analysis addresses these and other questions that arise when conducting large-scale case law research. With the increasing digital availability of justice, this research is increasingly attractive. At the same time, this development justifies increased attention to the methodological justification of case law analysis.     Description: The research reported in this publication concerns the second sub-study of the project Administrative Power and the Effect of Professionalisation Incentives in Secondary Education. This sub-study focuses on the various incentives that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and organisations affiliated with OCW (for instance NRO, the Inspectorate and DUO, VO-raad, the Education Council and collective agreements) give to various actor groups in education. The aim is to maintain and improve the professional competencies of those actor groups. Incentives' is another word for professionalisation policy instruments (PBIs) and these can be categorised as PBIs arising from legislation or regulations, PBIs of a financial nature and PBIs intended to entice professionalisation activities through communication. For each PBI aimed at secondary education, the actor(s) targeted and the nature of the incentive were identified. For comparison with secondary education, this has also been done for PBIs in PO and MBO. To gain more insight into the familiarity, use, effectiveness and possible side effects, experts were interviewed and asked to fill in a digital questionnaire. Finally, a focus group meeting was held to discuss our findings in more detail on the basis of various propositions.
    Description: Het onderzoek brengt de stand van zaken met betrekking tot bestuurlijk vermogen en professionalisering in het voortgezet onderwijs in kaart. We doen dat door verschillende opeenvolgende deelstudies. We gaan door secundaire analyses na in hoeverre besturen voor voortgezet onderwijs van elkaar verschillen in gerealiseerde onderwijskwaliteit. Door literatuurstudie en interviews met deskundigen schetsen we vervolgens welke professionaliseringprikkels in het voortgezet onderwijs voorkomen en waar ze toe leiden. De kern van ons onderzoek bestaat uit een combinatie van een surveyonderzoek met (verkennende en verdiepende) casestudies. We onderzoeken in hoeverre besturen beschikken over bestuurlijk vermogen, hoe ze reageren op externe professionaliseringsprikkels en hoe ze interne professionalisering vormgeven. We analyseren de relaties tussen bestuurlijk vermogen, professionalisering en onderwijskwaliteit en gaan de invloed na van bestuurlijke kenmerken. Door expertmeetings met vertegenwoordigers van beleid, praktijk en wetenschap komen we uiteindelijk tot breed gedragen aanbevelingen voor het verbeteren van het voortgezet onderwijs.

The first interviewee, Rivka Mooren, works as project editor Higher Education at Pearson Benelux. She explains how handbooks and digital learning platforms develop from the conceptual stage to publication. In light of international developments in higher education publishing, Mooren expects that the market will become fully digital, although in Europe more slowly than in the United States. Secondly, Regine Reincke considers the larger trends and developments in Dutch educational publishing. She works as Head of Product for ParnasSys, an administrative system for students that is widely used in Dutch primary schools. She arrived at this position after a career in educational publishing. This allows her to reflect on the role of technology in the classroom, and how it may enhance, but not replace, traditional classes and books.

    Description: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. In 1968 werd een regime van autoritaire monseigneursen statusgevoelige professoren ten grave gedragen. In de euforie om de autonomie koos de nieuwe, Nederlandstalige universiteit voor de vlucht vooruit. Maar in het midden van de jaren 1970 maakte het revolutionaire elan plaats voor gevoelens van ontnuchtering. Daaraan kwam pas in het midden van de jaren 1980 een einde. De universiteit werd toen als het ware ‘heruitgevonden’. Het onderzoek werd geprofessionaliseerd, het onderwijs verruimd, de contacten met de maatschappij benadrukt. Sindsdien werd de horizon steeds weidser. De stad op de berg vertelt op meeslepende wijze het verhaal van de strijd om zelfstandigheid, van contestatie en verzakelijking, van wetenschap en engagement. Het boek is een absolute aanrader voor iedereen die de Leuvense universiteit en haar gemeenschap van professoren en studenten, maar ook van laboranten, bibliothecarissen en technici beter wil leren.

    Description: Although in recent years more and more attention has been paid to the clitoris, often little attention to the attitude towards her existence in the past. This article takes a look at the clitter's history and focuses on her appear in Dutch publications by (and for) doctors and teachers in the last 400 years. The conclusion is that the clitoris has never been completely forgotten or ignored, but that the ignorance about this female organ is due is due to cultural and social factors: a lack of attention to sexuality in general and for the female genitalia in particular. pass in the last decade this has been slowly changing: attention to the full anatomy of the clitoris is widely used for the first time combined with attention to the sexual experience of women within a framework in which she is equal to the man.
    Description: Hoewel er de laatste jaren steeds meer aandacht wordt besteed aan de clitoris, is vaak maar weinig oog voor de houding tegenover haar bestaan in het verleden. Dit artikel gaat in op de geschiedenis van de kittelaar en richt zich op haar voorkomen in Nederlandse publicaties van (en voor) medici en docenten in de laatste 400 jaar. De conclusie luidt dat de clitoris nooit volledig is vergeten of genegeerd, maar dat de onwetendheid over dit vrouwelijke orgaan te wijten is aan culturele en sociale factoren: een gebrek aan aandacht voor seksualiteit in het algemeen en voor de vrouwelijke geslachtsorganen in het bijzonder. Pas in het laatste decennium is dit langzaam aan het veranderen: aandacht voor de volledige anatomie van de clitoris wordt voor het eerst op grote schaal gecombineerd met aandacht voor de seksuele beleving van de vrouw binnen een kader waarin ze gelijkwaardig is aan de man.

    Description: In 1906, a new primer was published in the German city of Bremen: The Bremer Fibel. Its illustrations were created by Cornelis Jetses (1873-1955) one of the bestknown illustrators of teaching material in the Netherlands, his home country, in the first half of the twentieth century. This article focuses on these illustrations and shows how Jetses used his artistic skills to create images which fulfilled the demands of representatives of Reformed Pedagogy, a movement which emerged in Europe around 1900 and placed the child at the centre of education. By creating an overall design for the book that should help children develop a good aesthetic taste and by showing people, objects and situations that were part of the pupils’ everyday world, Cornelis Jetses played a part in establishing a child-oriented education in Bremen. Furthermore, this article also shows how the illustrator used artistic composition principles to create images that helped pupils to learn how to read words and decipher images.

    Description: Despite attempts by the Dutch government to combat and discourage unlawful residence, there are people who live in the Netherlands without a residence permit. However, little is known about the way they live (or survive) and work in the Netherlands. Although their residence is not legal, this does not mean that migrants without residence permits have no rights. On the contrary, this book connects the legal legislation and regulations on the national and international level with the socio-economic reality of this vulnerable group of migrants. Based on unique empirical material, this study shows the discrepancy between the rights that also apply to migrants without residence permits, for example as workers, as patients or as residents, and shows the absence of protection in everyday practice. The book concludes with an exploration of possibilities for improving the vulnerable position of migrants without residence permits in the Netherlands.

    Description: Imitating models was the main early modern poetical principle. This study discusses Dutch novelistic prose translated from three European bestsellers: François de Bellesforest’s Histoires Tragiques (translation 1612), John Barclay’s Argenis (translations 1640-1681), and Antoine Torche’s Le Chien de Boulogne (translation 1681). Confirming Burke’s thesis of cultural hybridity the translations reflect balancing acts between accepting and resisting the contents and morals of their models. Only Torche’s Chien is transformed into a cultural translation, by adding a new Dutch narrative to its first chapters. Save this added Dutch narrative, all three bestsellers are translated docilely and accurately. This seems to indicate that novelistic prose served to make a profit, financing other commodities of the publishers. Nevertheless, at the same time translators Reinier Telle, Gerbrandt Bredero, Jan Glazemaker, and maybe Timotheus ten Hoorn, like canaries in coal mines, may have given their readers alarming signals on social behavior.

    Description: Jan Walravens (1920-1965) played a central role in Flemish literature as he introduced and facilitated literary experiments after the second world war. He was a leading essayist and literary critic, who wrote thousands of reviews showing the younger generation the way to French existentialism and to the international avant-garde. In addition to novels and shorter fiction, he published in-depth philosophical essays on Kierkegaard, Sade and Sartre. His international network of artistic relations turned him into a central figure in the Flemish literary world, a position he held until his untimely death at the age of forty-five. Jan Walravens and the Experiment presents ten essays that chart the various aspects of Walravens’ immense activity: his philosophical thinking on Sade, his relation with the visual arts, his position as an avant-gardist, his defense of poetry old and new, his view on the French nouveau roman, his novels, and his propagation of a new kind of literary diary. The authors have used the Walravens archive and unearthed some material that has never before been brought to the public’s attention, most notably the facsimile of a ‘cadavre exquis’ Walravens created with Albert Bontridder and Florent Welles.

Kenmerkend voor moderne burgers daarentegen is dat ze veel vertrouwen in zichzelf stellen en geloven dat de eerdere arrangementen niet meer nodig zijn. Dat komt op een gevaarlijke illusie neer, gegeven de innerlijke onzekerheid waar we vandaag de dag mee worstelen.

    Description: Men kent al sinds lang parken en groene zones : zorgvuldig aangelegde en goed bewaakte zones die de monotonie van de bebouwing doorbreken en voor een vleugje «beschaafde» natuur in de stad zorgen. Maar nu pas ontdekt men aan de rand van onze Steden de half-naiuurlijke gebieden die lange tijd werden verwaarloosd en zo een stukje «natuurlijke» natuur in de stad brengen. Biologen wijzen op de rijkdom van nun ecosysteem, op de verscheidenheid van nun fauna en flora. Maar dit boek beoogt een andere vorm van verdediging en waardering van die gebieden. Naast de biologische verscheidenheid moest immers ook de maatschappelijke waarde van die gebieden aan bod kunnen komen : dat is precies de opzet van een diepgaande sociologische analyse waaruit blijkt welke voorstellingen de stadsbewoners zieh van die gebieden maken en welke vormen van gebruik er zieh ontwikkelen. Als unieke bronnen van biologische rijkdom in een stedelijk milieu en als inzet van gebruikte vormen die elkaar soms aanvullen, soms uitsluiten, vragen de half-natuurlijke gebieden om een demoeratisch beheer en om juridische bescherming. Het tweede deel van het boek bestudeert dan ook de mogelijkheden die het beschikbare juridische instrumentarium biedt. Aldus wordt een omkadering gecreeerd die de randgebieden tussen stad en natuur, die nu reeds een belangrijk element vormen van het gemeenschappelijke erfgoed van de stadsbewoners, daadwerkelijke bescherming verzekert. Er werden zes illustrative Brusselse gebieden geselecteerd : de Kauwberg, het Scheutbos, het Moeraske, de Neerpede, het Kattebroeck en het plateau van de Vorsterie. Beide studies werden uitgevoerd op initiatief van het Fonds Leefmilieu van de Koning Boudewijnstichting.

    Description: Grensverleggende analyse van Duitse propaganda in België in de beginfase van WOI Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde de Duitse bezetter België intern te splijten. Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de nazomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land de Vlaamse beweging onophoudelijk bestoken met een grootscheepse mediacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. Het is een mooi staaltje van “fake news” avant la lettre.

Addressing this issue, the Scientific Council for Government Policy (wrr) offers some reflections in this report, guided by the question how the Netherlands can develop a foreign policy strategy that matches the changing power relations in the world and the radically changed character of international relations. The answer to this question is a reorientation. This means making transparent choices, making smarter use of Europe as our dominant arena, and, finally, choosing an approach that makes better use of the growing role of non-state actors. The report's recommendations not only underline the necessity of reorientation but also show how this could be accomplished in practice.

De wereld om ons heen is onderhevig aan veranderende machtsverhoudingen, wordt bevolkt door andere spelers dan in het verleden, en wordt gekenmerkt door een sterkere verknoping van nationale en internationale vraagstukken. Dit vraagt om nieuwe antwoorden, om een heroriëntatie op het buitenlandbeleid. Het rapport wordt op 30 november namens de regering in ontvangst genomen door de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, dr. U. Rosenthal. Het rapport stelt vast dat de internationale betrekkingen radicaal van karakter zijn veranderd. De vertrouwde afbakening tussen binnen- en buitenland vervaagt steeds verder, met name in Europa. Een groot deel van de Nederlanders ervaart dit evenwel nog anders. Tegelijkertijd neemt hun onzekerheid over de positie van Nederland in de wereld toe, mede door de recente financiële crisis. Het WRR-rapport bepleit een strategischer aanpak van de buitenlandpolitiek en schetst daarvoor een afwegingskader. Hiermee kunnen duidelijke keuzes worden gemaakt. Bijvoorbeeld door de nadruk te leggen op beleidsterreinen waarop Nederland sterk is en zich langere tijd wil profileren, zoals water, voedsel, of internationaal recht. De keuzes moeten ertoe bijdragen dat het profiel, de zichtbaarheid en de invloed van Nederland worden vergroot. Door in het buitenlandbeleid de samenhang tussen nationale en internationale belangen sterker te benadrukken, zal dat beleid in eigen land op ruimere steun kunnen rekenen, verwacht de WRR. De nieuwe aanpak zal er volgens de WRR toe leiden dat de algemene buitenlandstrategie een zaak van de gehele ministerraad wordt. Deze aanpak impliceert geen herijking of ontkokering van het buitenlandbeleid. Het vraagt een andere benadering, een andere houding. De Europese Unie is en blijft voor Nederland de meest dominante arena voor internationale samenwerking. Wie zijn doelen in het buitenlandbeleid wil bereiken, moet juist hier invloed uitoefenen, juist hier excelleren om zijn nationale belangen te realiseren. Volgens de WRR vergt dit een antwoord op de vragen: in wat voor Europa willen wij leven en hoe kunnen we onze invloed aanwenden om dit Europa naar vermogen mee vorm geven? Daarbij zou het passen wanneer ons land de praktijk van de ons omringende landen volgt en de minister-president daadwerkelijk tot eerstverantwoordelijke voor het EU-beleid aanwijst, aan het hoofd van het 'ministerie van Algemene en Europese Zaken'. Een strategischer buitenlandbeleid vraagt om een adequate uitvoering. Naast organisatorische aanscherpingen, kunnen bestaande instrumenten beter worden benut. Zo meent de WRR dat het postennet van diplomatieke vertegenwoordigingen in de wereld niet gebaseerd moet zijn op vaste reflexen, maar een afgeleide dient te zijn van een heldere strategie. Tevens zijn nieuwe vormen van samenwerking met andere landen noodzakelijk, waarbij ook nadrukkelijk ruimte en erkenning ontstaan voor samenwerking met niet-statelijke actoren zoals bedrijven, ngo's en belangenorganisaties. Kortom: de WRR bepleit in de buitenlandse politiek strategisch-inhoudelijk scherp te kiezen, te streven naar excellentie binnen Europa en een faciliterend medespeler te worden in de wereld van niet-statelijke actoren.     Description: Het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (IISG) is een van de meest vooraanstaande onderzoeksinstituten ter wereld op het terrein van de sociale geschiedenis, zowel in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek als in het verzamelen en beheren van een unieke internationale collectie archieven. Dit boek onderzoekt de geschiedenis van het Instituut van 1935 tot 1989. Centraal staat de ontwikkeling van het Instituut in de richting van een steeds sterkere professionalisering. Een ontwikkeling in wisselwerking met een driehoek van externe invloeden: de politieke en maatschappelijke context; de ontwikkeling van sociale geschiedenis als academische discipline; en het institutionele en bestuurlijke kader. Het is het verhaal van betrokken historici en activisten, die het erfgoed van en uit de arbeidersbeweging en andere emancipatiebewegingen wilden veiligstellen en voor onderzoek beschikbaar maken. Het boek neemt de lezer mee naar spectaculaire reddingsacties van archieven en bibliotheken die bedreigd waren door de opkomst van Hitler, de ineenstorting van het IISG tijdens de bezetting, en de wonderbaarlijke terugkeer van de meeste collecties na de oorlog. Tijdens de wederopbouw volgde een zoektocht naar een plaats in de academische infrastructuur. Intern raakte het Instituut ontregeld tijdens de roerige jaren zestig en zeventig. In de jaren tachtig vond het IISG de weg naar verdere professionalisering zonder zijn oorspronkelijke bestaansrecht en drijfveren uit het oog te verliezen.

    Description: The second and updated edition of this new study of the genesis of the Indonesian national state is based on the notion that the birth of that nation grew out of not only the liberation movement but also from the Dutch rule that the nationalists agitated against. The book places a clear emphasis on the ways in which Dutch rule was established in the Indonesian archipelago in the course of three centuries and examines the developments of Dutch colonial policies. This feeds into chapters that focus on the Indonesian nationalist movement and the Japanese occupation of the colony in 1942-1945. The occupation helped to enable the proclamation of Indonesian indepence and the creation of the Republic in August 1945. The conflict that erupted between the Repub-lic and the Netherlands was brought to an incomplete ‘solution’ in 1949, but the dis-pute about West-Irian led to a sequel that lasted for another thirteen years. More than half of this book is dedicated to the conflict and its aftermath. Much attention is paid to the sentiments and ideas that informed Dutch policy. Various issues that have received scant attention in the historiography are now dis-cussed. The author based his study on Dutch and international literature, contemporary newspapers and policy documents, and his own memories. In the book’s title, the stork represents the Dutch and the garuda functions as a symbol of Indonesia. J. Herman Burgers (1926) worked at the Dutch Department of Foreign Affairs. He studied Law in Amsterdam and Political Science at Stanford University. He was deeply interested in the conflict between the Netherlands and the Republic of Indone-sia, as it broke out in 1945. This fascination has never left him, and he has continued to study the conflict and its aftermath, especially during the years 1948-1950 when he was in Indonesia for his Dutch military service.

    Description: The Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences (Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen), was founded in 1778 to become the predecessor of the National Library and National Museum of the Republik Indonesia. It was considered to be the most important cultural and scholarly organization of the Netherlands East Indies in the time of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the colonial period. This studie pays attention to the foundation, programme and area of interest of the Society, also to its members, organization, growth, decline and resurrection, but most of all to the relation with the government of a formally private enterprise, that sometimes seemed to become part of the governmental structure. The archives of the Society are kept in the National Archives of the Republik Indonesia. Since 1878, they have only scarcely been available to scholars from outside of the Society. They have, however, proven to be of great importance to historians, linguists, and anthropologists.
    Description: Het Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, opgericht in 1778, is de voorloper van het Nationaal Museum en de Nationale Bibliotheek van de Republik Indonesia en geldt als de belangrijkste cultureel-wetenschappelijke organisatie van Nederlands-Indië in de VOC-tijd en de koloniale periode. In deze studie naar de vroege geschiedenis van deze eerbiedwaardige instelling komen aan de orde: de oprichting, het programma en het werkterrein van het genootschap, het ledenbestand en de leiding, groei, verval en wederopstanding, maar vooral de relatie tot de overheid van deze formeel private onderneming, die soms eerder een overheidsinstelling leek te worden. Het archief van het Genootschap, dat bewaard wordt in het Nationaal Archief van de Republik Indonesia, is hiertoe de belangrijkste bron geweest. Het is sinds 1878 nauwelijks beschikbaar geweest voor onderzoekers buiten de kring van het genootschap. Voor historici, linguïsten, antropologen, archeologen en anderen is het genootschapsarchief en de geschiedenis van het genootschap van groot belang. Hans Groot (1949) studeerde Nederlandse taal en letterkunde en Italiaans in Amsterdam en was werkzaam in het hoger onderwijs (1976-1986), eerst in Amsterdam, daarna in Triëst (Italië). Sinds 1986 is hij werkzaam bij het Erasmus Taalcentrum in Jakarta. Na een bezoek aan het Nationaal Museum aldaar stelde hij zich vragen over de voorgeschiedenis van dat museum. Dat was de start van het onderzoek dat resulteerde in deze studie.

    Description: Hoe komt het toch dat onze relatief genereuze verzorgingsstaat vaak geen effectieve hulp biedt aan mensen die de voorzieningen het hardst nodig hebben? Waardoor belanden velen dus ondanks hulp keer op keer in schulden, armoede en isolement? Aan de hand van ervaringen van eenouder gezinnen (i.c. moeders) in de bijstand betogen we dat deze mismatch een gevolg is van de impliciete voorwaarden van de verzorgingsstaat. De (materiele) sociale zekerheid die de verzorgingsstaat biedt, is slechts toereikend bij een solide basis van emotionele en relationele veiligheid. Alleenstaande bijstandsmoeders (en waarschijnlijk ook andere multiprobleemgezinnen) ontberen deze. Daardoor komt de (materiële) zekerheid die de verzorgingsstaat biedt, niet tot zijn recht. We besluiten met voorstellen om de benodigde relationele en emotionele zekerheid in het stelsel een plaats te geven.

Channel Three was the first fully commercial television channel in the Nordic countries, founded and owned by a group of odd bedfellows: the public broadcaster YLE, its long standing commercial companion MTV and a growing electronics giant Nokia. The plans to start a commercial TV station were first severely opposed by leading politicians, but it was finally approved as a means to fight back international satellite channels and the efforts of major newspaper companies to enter the television market. Nyt jos koskaan on tarvetta tiedolle, joka käsittelee julkishallinnon roolia, toimintaa ja suhdetta markkinoihin yleisesti sekä palvelujen järjestämisen ja hankinnan tapoja, eli suhdetta yrityksiin ja asiakkaisiin erityisesti. Sote-palvelut markkinoilla -teos kokoaa yhteen ALIS-hankkeen keskeiset havainnot ja johtopäätökset. Kirja jakaantuu neljään osakokonaisuuteen, jotka koostuvat itsenäisistä tieteellisistä artikkeleista. Ensimmäinen osa käsittelee kuntia sote-markkinoiden toimijoina ja hahmottelee uuden elinvoimakunnan toimintamallia. Toinen osa avaa osallisuuden ja asiakaslähtöisyyden teemoja osana palvelujen kehittämistä. Kolmannessa osassa tarkastellaan hankintoja ja erityisesti tulosperusteista hankintaa, joka on verraten uusi palvelujen hankintatapa. Neljäs osa haastaa lukijaa markkinoiden laajempaan tarkasteluun astetta filosofisemmin ja liberalistisemmin. Kokonaisuudessaan teos tarjoaa monipuolisen näkymän sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluihin sekä -markkinoihin. ALIS-hanke toteutettiin vuosina 2013–2016 ja se rahoitettiin Tekesin Innovaatiot sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluissa -ohjelmasta. Hankkeen kohdekaupunkeina olivat Jyväskylä, Tampere ja Turku."

    Description: Moeten vaker camera's worden toegelaten in de rechtszaal? Zou persoonlijke informatie over rechters, zoals lidmaatschap van een politieke partij, openbaar moeten worden gemaakt? Zouden rechters actiever stelling moeten nemen in het publieke debat? Is de stap naar een systeem van dissenting opinions wenselijk? De laatste jaren worden dit soort vragen veelvuldig opgeworpen. De rechtspraak moet immers transparanter, zo vinden velen. Burgers moeten beter kunnen zien en begrijpen wat zich in en om de rechtszaal afspeelt. Maar hoe ver moeten de luiken open en met welke middelen zou de rechtspraak dan moeten inzetten op transparantie? En: waar en waarom dienen grenzen aan meer openheid te worden gesteld? Oordelen rechters ander over transparantie, al naar gelang hun leeftijd of de sector waarin ze werkzaam zijn? Tot nu toe was nauwelijks bekend hoe de ruim tweeduizend rechters die Nederland telt over deze en andere vragen denken. Als onderdeel van een breder onderzoek heeft de WRR in de eerste helft van 2012 meer dan vierhonderd rechters uit alle sectoren van de rechtspraak geïnterviewd en geënquêteerd over allerhande kwesties in relatie tot transparantie. In dit boekje worden de resultaten van dit onderzoek gepresenteerd. Als er één ding duidelijk wordt, is het wel dat het onderwerp sterk onder rechters leeft. Een grote meerderheid van hen is voor méér transparantie. Daarbij maken ze nadrukkelijk een onderscheid tussen transparantie op het niveau van de individuele zaaksbehandeling en dat van het instituut rechtspraak. Als het gaat om de vraag hoe transparantie te organiseren, blijken de meningen overigens ook flink uiteen te lopen. Al met al geeft deze publicatie een rijk en gedetailleerd beeld van de overwegingen van rechters pro en contra meer transparantie.

    Description: The requiem (or the death mass) is one of the oldest and longest surviving genres in Western music history. For hundreds of years it only existed in its original Gregorian guise, but from about 1450 many great composers were inspired to write of masterly new death masses Dies Irae introduces the reader to these masterpieces in an accessible way, without any prior musical knowledge being required. After an introduction to the meaning and structure of the text and music of the ancient Latin Mass for the Dead, a chronicle in three parts follows that guides the reader through the history of the requiem. In separate chapters, all the major and well-known requiems (including by Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Fauré, Britten and Webber), as well as some less popular but equally poignant works (such as the requiems by Ockeghem, Schütz, Weill, Ligeti, Stravinsky and Zimmermann). Each requiem is discussed according to a fixed pattern, so that the reader can freely browse through different periods and compositions: first each work is situated music-historically, followed by a short discussion of each part separately. By linking the discussions to one reference recording per work, the reader can immediately test the explanation against listening practice. Under the direction of Pieter Bergé, and with the cooperation of Jan Christiaens, all contributions to 'Dies Irae. Chronicle of the Requiem' written by authors who are affiliated with the Musicology research unit of KU Leuven as teachers, researchers or alumnus.
    Description: Het requiem (of de dodenmis) is een van de oudste en langst overlevende genres uit de westerse muziekgeschiedenis. Honderden jaren heeft het enkel bestaan in zijn oorspronkelijke gregoriaanse gedaante, maar vanaf ca. 1450 hebben heel wat grote componisten zich laten inspireren tot het schrijven van magistrale nieuwe dodenmissen. Dies Irae laat de lezer op toegankelijke wijze kennismaken met deze meesterwerken zonder dat muzikale voorkennis vereist is.     Description: The research project Beatrijs Internationaal brought together about a hundred literary translators and researchers in the field of historical and modern Dutch literature, translation studies and related disciplines, from twenty different language areas. The participants immersed themselves in questions about the international circulation and reception of the famous Middle Dutch legend of Our Lady, from its origins to our own time. Almost a hundred adaptations and translations of the Beatrijs-story were found, and new discoveries are still being made. The case of Beatrijs brought about new theoretical discussions, cooperation and exchange in the field of Dutch Studies, as is demonstrated by this volume. By means of diverse approaches the authors show how a literary text from the relatively small geographical area of the Dutch language can circulate both inside and outside its linguistic borders in different periods. With their wide spectrum of research questions, methodological approaches and selections of material, the contributions are a reflection of the richness of international Dutch Studies in the 21st century. Inspired by translation, adaptation and reception studies, this volume helps us to answer the question which characteristics of a particular text make it a likely candidate for crossing linguistic, geophysical, historical, and other borders. This volume is a contribution to the historiography of the export and dissemination of Dutch literature.

    Description: The authors worked as doctors in Kalimantan between 1949 and 1959, where they were first introduced to Ngaju Dayak tales. The present anthology contains 20 tales given to them by the Rev. Munte Saha. Both the original text and the Dutch translation are provided. Ten of these are about Sangumang, the cunning one, who used to fool his uncle, the king. The other ten deal with Bapa Paloi, the stupid one, who is constantly being admonished by his wife. Sangumang and Bapa Paloi live in the upper-world, and mythological tales are told of their exploits. In addition to the 20 tales, a modern version of a Bapa Paloi tale is presented, written by the Rev. Munte Saha himself. The scene of this modern tale is not the upper-world but the present island of Kalimantan.

    Description: Sociale investeringen staan in veel Europese landen op de beleidsagenda. Hierbij gaat het om een omslag van klassiek herverdelend sociaal beleid naar activerend sociaal beleid. Hoewel deze agenda een verlaging van de armoede beoogt, vrezen sommigen juist voor averechtse effecten. Uit vergelijkende studies blijkt dat sociaalinvesteringsbeleid vooralsnog weinig effect heeft gehad op de ontwikkeling van de Europese armoedecijfers. Een verklaring hiervoor lijkt te zijn dat in de meeste landen – mede door het optreden van de financiële crisis – de verschuivingen in de uitgaven van traditioneel naar activerend sociaal beleid betrekkelijk beperkt in omvang zijn. Echter, vanwege politiek-economische redenen en trends als verdergaande economische globalisering, is het goed denkbaar dat sociale investeringen in de toekomst een belangrijker plek krijgen in sociale stelsels.

    Description: Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398) behoort tot de vroege 'Moderne Devotie'. Zo noemde zich de beweging van 'vernieuwde innigheid' die rond 1375 in Deventer onder inspiratie van Geert Grote en Florens Radewijns ontstond. Zij ontwikkelden een hervormingsprogramma, waarin de geestelijke omvorming van de mens centraal stond. Als broeder van het gemene leven speelde Gerard Zerbolt hierin een prominente rol. Hij gaf leiding aan een intensieve boekproductie, ijverde voor kerkelijke erkenning van de broederschap en maakte zich haar charisma eigen. Zo schreef hij twee toonaangevende handboeken voor de geestelijke weg. Meer dan Grote en Radewijns legde Gerard Zerbolt de grondslag voor een eigen spiritualiteit van de Moderne Devotie. De spiritualibus ascensionibus was nog niet in modern Nederlands vertaald. Reeds de Middelnederlandse vertaling droeg de titel Geestelijke opklimmingen. Dit boek beschrijft de weg van de mens, die uit de ongelijkenis met zijn Schepper wil terugkeren tot de oorspronkelijke gelijkenis. Tegenover de ondeugden die mensen kunnen bezielen, plaatst Gerard Zerbolt als tegenkrachten de deugden. Zijn geschrift bevat alle elementen om ook ons als mensen van deze tijd te helpen tot een nieuw mensbeeld en een nieuwe visie op de samenleving te komen.

    Description: Sexual health in Flanders describes the results of the first representative population-based study on this topic in Flanders (the Northern, Dutch-speaking part of Belgium). A research team of psychologists, sexologists, sociologists and medical doctors, affiliated with Ghent University, KU Leuven and Ghent University Hospital collaborated on this research project that aimed to explore various aspects of sexual behavior and sexual health in men and women living in Flanders. Apart from providing in reliable, valid, descriptive scientific data, this study offers important information on which a more targeted policy to promote sexual health can be developed. This reference work is based on a survey in which 1832 Flemish men and women – aged 14 to 80 years old – participated and that covered various aspects of sexual health. The focus is not only on sexual experiences and practices; attention is also paid to the relational and social context in which these experiences occur. In addition, a number of chapters elaborate on the sexual start (the first sexual experiences), reproductive health, sexual dysfunctions, cross-border sexual behavior, and profiles of sexual health.
