    Description: This paper reveals the relationship between the Miller plateau voltage and the displacement currents through the gate–drain capacitance (CGD) and the drain–source capacitance (CDS) in the switching process of a power transistor. The corrected turn-on Miller plateau voltage and turn-off Miller plateau voltage are different even with a constant current load. Using the proposed new Miller plateau, the turn-on and turn-off sequences can be more accurately analyzed, and the switching power loss can be more accurately predicted accordingly. Switching loss models based on the new Miller plateau have also been proposed. The experimental test result of the power MOSFET (NCE2030K) verified the relationship between the Miller plateau voltage and the displacement currents through CGD and CDS. A carefully designed verification test bench featuring a power MOSFET written in Verilog-A proved the prediction accuracy of the switching waveform and switching loss with the new proposed Miller plateau. The average relative error of the loss model using the new plateau is reduced to 1/2∼1/4 of the average relative error of the loss model using the old plateau; the proposed loss model using the new plateau, which also takes the gate current’s variation into account, further reduces the error to around 5%.

    Description: The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines six levels of driving automation, ranging from Level 0 to Level 5. Automated driving systems perform entire dynamic driving tasks for Levels 3–5 automated vehicles. Delegating dynamic driving tasks from driver to automated driving systems can eliminate crashes attributed to driver errors. Sharing status, sharing intent, seeking agreement, or sharing prescriptive information between road users and vehicles dedicated to automated driving systems can further enhance dynamic driving task performance, safety, and traffic operations. Extensive simulation is required to reduce operating costs and achieve an acceptable risk level before testing cooperative automated driving systems in laboratory environments, test tracks, or public roads. Cooperative automated driving systems can be simulated using a vehicle dynamics simulation tool (e.g., CarMaker and CarSim) or a traffic microsimulation tool (e.g., Vissim and Aimsun). Vehicle dynamics simulation tools are mainly used for verification and validation purposes on a small scale, while traffic microsimulation tools are mainly used for verification purposes on a large scale. Vehicle dynamics simulation tools can simulate longitudinal, lateral, and vertical dynamics for only a few vehicles in each scenario (e.g., up to ten vehicles in CarMaker and up to twenty vehicles in CarSim). Conventional traffic microsimulation tools can simulate vehicle-following, lane-changing, and gap-acceptance behaviors for many vehicles in each scenario without simulating vehicle powertrain. Vehicle dynamics simulation tools are more compute-intensive but more accurate than traffic microsimulation tools. Due to software architecture or computing power limitations, simplifying assumptions underlying convectional traffic microsimulation tools may have been a necessary compromise long ago. There is, therefore, a need for a simulation tool to optimize computational complexity and accuracy to simulate many vehicles in each scenario with reasonable accuracy. This research proposes a traffic microsimulation tool that employs a simplified vehicle powertrain model and a model-based fault detection method to simulate many vehicles with reasonable accuracy at each simulation time step under noise and unknown inputs. Our traffic microsimulation tool considers driver characteristics, vehicle model, grade, pavement conditions, operating mode, vehicle-to-vehicle communication vulnerabilities, and traffic conditions to estimate longitudinal control variables with reasonable accuracy at each simulation time step for many conventional vehicles, vehicles dedicated to automated driving systems, and vehicles equipped with cooperative automated driving systems. Proposed vehicle-following model and longitudinal control functions are verified for fourteen vehicle models, operating in manual, automated, and cooperative automated modes over two driving schedules under three malicious fault magnitudes on transmitted accelerations.

    Description: In machine learning and data science, feature selection is considered as a crucial step of data preprocessing. When we directly apply the raw data for classification or clustering purposes, sometimes we observe that the learning algorithms do not perform well. One possible reason for this is the presence of redundant, noisy, and non-informative features or attributes in the datasets. Hence, feature selection methods are used to identify the subset of relevant features that can maximize the model performance. Moreover, due to reduction in feature dimension, both training time and storage required by the model can be reduced as well. In this paper, we present a tri-stage wrapper-filter-based feature selection framework for the purpose of medical report-based disease detection. In the first stage, an ensemble was formed by four filter methods—Mutual Information, ReliefF, Chi Square, and Xvariance—and then each feature from the union set was assessed by three classification algorithms—support vector machine, naïve Bayes, and k-nearest neighbors—and an average accuracy was calculated. The features with higher accuracy were selected to obtain a preliminary subset of optimal features. In the second stage, Pearson correlation was used to discard highly correlated features. In these two stages, XGBoost classification algorithm was applied to obtain the most contributing features that, in turn, provide the best optimal subset. Then, in the final stage, we fed the obtained feature subset to a meta-heuristic algorithm, called whale optimization algorithm, in order to further reduce the feature set and to achieve higher accuracy. We evaluated the proposed feature selection framework on four publicly available disease datasets taken from the UCI machine learning repository, namely, arrhythmia, leukemia, DLBCL, and prostate cancer. Our obtained results confirm that the proposed method can perform better than many state-of-the-art methods and can detect important features as well. Less features ensure less medical tests for correct diagnosis, thus saving both time and cost.

    Description: With the rapid development of deep learning, computer vision has assisted in solving a variety of problems in engineering construction. However, very few computer vision-based approaches have been proposed on work productivity’s evaluation. Therefore, taking a super high-rise project as a research case, using the detected object information obtained by a deep learning algorithm, a computer vision-based method for evaluating the productivity of assembling reinforcement is proposed. Firstly, a detector that can accurately distinguish various entities related to assembling reinforcement based on CenterNet is established. DLA34 is selected as the backbone. The mAP reaches 0.9682, and the speed of detecting a single image can be as low as 0.076 s. Secondly, the trained detector is used to detect the video frames, and images with detected boxes and documents with coordinates can be obtained. The position relationship between the detected work objects and detected workers is used to determine how many workers (N) have participated in the task. The time (T) to perform the process can be obtained from the change of coordinates of the work object. Finally, the productivity is evaluated according to N and T. The authors use four actual construction videos for validation, and the results show that the productivity evaluation is generally consistent with the actual conditions. The contribution of this research to construction management is twofold: On the one hand, without affecting the normal behavior of workers, a connection between construction individuals and work object is established, and the work productivity evaluation is realized. On the other hand, the proposed method has a positive effect on improving the efficiency of construction management.

    Description: Physical inactivity increases the risk of many adverse health conditions, including the world’s major non-communicable diseases, such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and breast and colon cancers, shortening life expectancy. There are minimal medical care and personal trainers’ methods to monitor a patient’s actual physical activity types. To improve activity monitoring, we propose an artificial-intelligence-based approach to classify physical movement activity patterns. In more detail, we employ two deep learning (DL) methods, namely a deep feed-forward neural network (DNN) and a deep recurrent neural network (RNN) for this purpose. We evaluate the two models on two physical movement datasets collected from several volunteers who carried tri-axial accelerometer sensors. The first dataset is from the UCI machine learning repository, which contains 14 different activities-of-daily-life (ADL) and is collected from 16 volunteers who carried a single wrist-worn tri-axial accelerometer. The second dataset includes ten other ADLs and is gathered from eight volunteers who placed the sensors on their hips. Our experiment results show that the RNN model provides accurate performance compared to the state-of-the-art methods in classifying the fundamental movement patterns with an overall accuracy of 84.89% and an overall F1-score of 82.56%. The results indicate that our method provides the medical doctors and trainers a promising way to track and understand a patient’s physical activities precisely for better treatment.

    Description: Single image super-resolution task aims to reconstruct a high-resolution image from a low-resolution image. Recently, it has been shown that by using deep image prior (DIP), a single neural network is sufficient to capture low-level image statistics using only a single image without data-driven training such that it can be used for various image restoration problems. However, super-resolution tasks are difficult to perform with DIP when the target image is noisy. The super-resolved image becomes noisy because the reconstruction loss of DIP does not consider the noise in the target image. Furthermore, when the target image contains noise, the optimization process of DIP becomes unstable and sensitive to noise. In this paper, we propose a noise-robust and stable framework based on DIP. To this end, we propose a noise-estimation method using the generative adversarial network (GAN) and self-supervision loss (SSL). We show that a generator of DIP can learn the distribution of noise in the target image with the proposed framework. Moreover, we argue that the optimization process of DIP is stabilized when the proposed self-supervision loss is incorporated. The experiments show that the proposed method quantitatively and qualitatively outperforms existing single image super-resolution methods for noisy images.

    Description: Low pressure fluid transport (1) applications often require low and precise volumetric flow rates (2) including low leakage to reduce additional costly and complex sensors. A peristaltic pump design (3) was realized, with the fluid’s flexible transport channel formed by a solid cavity and a wobbling plate comprising a rigid and a soft layer (4). In operation, the wobbling plate is driven externally by an electric motor, hence, the soft layer is contracted and unloaded (5) during pump-cycles transporting fluid from low to high pressure sides. A thorough characterization of the pump system is required to design and dimension the components of the peristaltic pump. To capture all these parameters and their dependencies on various operation-states, often complex and long-lasting dynamic 3D FE-simulations are required. We present, here, a holistic design methodology (6) including analytical as well as numerical calculations, and experimental validations for a peristaltic pump with certain specifications of flow-rate range, maximum pressures, and temperatures. An experimental material selection process is established and material data of candidate materials (7) (liquid silicone rubber, acrylonitrile rubber, thermoplastic-elastomer) are directly applied to predict the required drive torque. For the prediction, a semi-physical, analytical model was derived and validated by characterizing the pump prototype.

    Description: The SARS-CoV-2 virus has spread worldwide, and the World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 pandemic, proclaiming that the entire world must overcome it together. The chest X-ray and computed tomography datasets of individuals with COVID-19 remain limited, which can cause lower performance of deep learning model. In this study, we developed a model for the diagnosis of COVID-19 by solving the classification problem using a self-supervised learning technique with a convolution attention module. Self-supervised learning using a U-shaped convolutional neural network model combined with a convolution block attention module (CBAM) using over 100,000 chest X-Ray images with structure similarity (SSIM) index captures image representations extremely well. The system we proposed consists of fine-tuning the weights of the encoder after a self-supervised learning pretext task, interpreting the chest X-ray representation in the encoder using convolutional layers, and diagnosing the chest X-ray image as the classification model. Additionally, considering the CBAM further improves the averaged accuracy of 98.6%, thereby outperforming the baseline model (97.8%) by 0.8%. The proposed model classifies the three classes of normal, pneumonia, and COVID-19 extremely accurately, along with other metrics such as specificity and sensitivity that are similar to accuracy. The average area under the curve (AUC) is 0.994 in the COVID-19 class, indicating that our proposed model exhibits outstanding classification performance.

    Description: Defective hard candies are usually produced due to inadequate feeding or insufficient cooling during the candy production process. The human-based inspection strategy needs to be brought up to date with the rapid developments in the confectionery industry. In this paper, a detection and classification method for defective hard candies based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed. First, the threshold_li method is used to distinguish between hard candy and background. Second, a segmentation algorithm based on concave point detection and ellipse fitting is used to split the adhesive hard candies. Finally, a classification model based on CNNs is constructed for defective hard candies. According to the types of defective hard candies, 2552 hard candies samples were collected; 70% were used for model training, 15% were used for validation, and 15% were used for testing. Defective hard candy classification models based on CNNs (Alexnet, Googlenet, VGG16, Resnet-18, Resnet34, Resnet50, MobileNetV2, and MnasNet0_5) were constructed and tested. The results show that the classification performances of these deep learning models are similar except MnasNet0_5 with the classification accuracy of 84.28%, and the Resnet50-based classification model is the best (98.71%). This research has certain theoretical reference significance for the intelligent classification of granular products.

    Description: Handover usually deals with the mobility of the end users in a mobile network to assure about the ongoing session of a user. It is observed that frequent handover results in call dropping due to latency. In order to overcome this issue, a fuzzy based handover decision scheme for mobile devices using a predictive model is proposed. First, an MFNN (Multi-layer Feed Forward Network) is used to determine the next cell of the user along with best hand off time. To obtain the best access network, multiple-attribute Access Network Selection Function (ANSF) is used. The fuzzy rule is applied by considering the parameter data rate, reliability, signal strength, battery power and mobility as input and the output obtained is the optimal network. The proposed scheme selects the best access network and enhances the quality of services.

    Description: In this paper, we construct novel numerical algorithms to solve the heat or diffusion equation. We start with 105 different leapfrog-hopscotch algorithm combinations and narrow this selection down to five during subsequent tests. We demonstrate the performance of these top five methods in the case of large systems with random parameters and discontinuous initial conditions, by comparing them with other methods. We verify the methods by reproducing an analytical solution using a non-equidistant mesh. Then, we construct a new nontrivial analytical solution containing the Kummer functions for the heat equation with time-dependent coefficients, and also reproduce this solution. The new methods are then applied to the nonlinear Fisher equation. Finally, we analytically prove that the order of accuracy of the methods is two, and present evidence that they are unconditionally stable.

    Description: IP fragmentation is still prevalent on the Internet. Defragmented traffic is a prerequisite for many network processing algorithms. This work focuses on the size and organization of a flow table, which is an essential ingredient of the hardware IP defragmentation block. Previous research suggests that fragmented IP traffic is highly local, and a relatively small flow table (on the order of a thousand entries) can process most of the traffic. Samples of IP traffic were obtained from public data sources and used for a statistical analysis, revealing the key factors in achieving design goals. The findings were backed by an extensive design space exploration of the software defragmentation model, which resulted in the efficiency estimates. To provide a robust score of the simulation model, a new validation technique is employed that helps to overcome the limitations of the samples.

    Description: The computing resources of today’s smartphones are underutilized most of the time. Using these resources could be highly beneficial in edge computing and fog computing contexts, for example, to support urban services for citizens. However, new challenges, especially regarding job scheduling, arise. Smartphones may form ad hoc networks, but individual devices highly differ in computational capabilities and (tolerable) energy usage. We take into account these particularities to validate a task execution scheme that relies on the computing power that clusters of mobile devices could provide. In this paper, we expand the study of several practical heuristics for job scheduling including execution scenarios with state-of-the-art smartphones. With the results of new simulated scenarios, we confirm previous findings and better comprehend the baseline approaches already proposed for the problem. This study also sheds some light on the capabilities of small-sized clusters comprising mid-range and low-end smartphones when the objective is to achieve real-time stream processing using Tensorflow object recognition models as edge jobs. Ultimately, we strive for industry applications to improve task scheduling for dew computing contexts. Heuristics such as ours plus supporting dew middleware could improve citizen participation by allowing a much wider use of dew computing resources, especially in urban contexts in order to help build smart cities.

    Description: Friction nonlinear disturbance is one of the main factors affecting the control performance of servo tracking system. In this paper, an improved Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) scheme of dual-axis servo turntable is researched to achieve accurate tracking. Firstly, the mathematical dynamics model of dual-axis servo tracking turntable system is established. The Elastoplastic model is used to describe nonlinear friction, in which the immeasurable part is extended to be a new state. Secondly, considering the smooth and monotonic increasing property of hyperbolic tangent function, an improved tracking differentiator is introduced, which can provide better noise attenuation performance. Thirdly, based on adjustable parameter systematic pole placement method, the fuzzy control algorithm is applied to realize the intelligent tuning of the improved Extended State Observer (ESO) gains, in which the input of the fuzzy controller is the estimation error, while the output is the observer bandwidth. Finally, the improved ADRC system is transformed into a Lurie system, then the extended circle criteria are adopted to analyze the absolute stability of the proposed system. Simulation and experimental verification of the improved ADRC method for the dual-axis turntable tracking servo system are conducted. Results illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed controller.

    Description: Conventionally, public key certificates bind one subject with one static public key so that the subject can facilitate the services of the public key infrastructure (PKI). In PKI, certificates need to be renewed (or revoked) for several practical reasons, including certificate expiration, private key breaches, condition changes, and possible risk reduction. The certificate renewal process is very costly, especially for those environments where online authorities are not available or the connection is not reliable. A dynamic public key certificate (DPKC) facilitates the dynamic changeover of the current public–private key pairs without renewing the certificate authority (CA). This paper extends the previous study in several aspects: (1) we formally define the DPKC; (2) we formally define the security properties; (3) we propose another implementation of the Krawczyk–Rabin chameleon-hash-based DPKC; (4) we propose two variants of DPKC, using the Ateniese–Medeiros key-exposure-free chameleon hash; (5) we detail two application scenarios.

    Description: In modulation identification issues, like in any other classification problem, the performance of the classification task is significantly impacted by the feature characteristics. Feature weighting boosts the performance of machine learning algorithms, particularly the class of instance-based learning algorithms such as the Minimum Distance (MD) classifier, in which the distance measure is highly sensitive to the magnitude of features. In this paper, we propose an improved version of the Salp Swarm optimization Algorithm (SSA), called ISSA, that will be applied to optimize feature weights for an MD classifier. The aim is to improve the performance of a blind digital modulation detection approach in the context of multiple-antenna systems. The improvements introduced to SSA mainly rely on the opposition-based learning technique. Computer simulations show that the ISSA outperforms the SSA as well as the algorithms that derive from it. The ISSA also exhibits the best performance once it is applied for feature weighting in the above context.

    Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a time-of-flight (TOF) brain positron emission tomography (PET) providing high-quality images. It consisted of 30 detector blocks arranged in a ring with a diameter of 257 mm and an axial field of view of 52.2 mm. Each detector block was composed of two detector modules and two application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips. The detector module was composed of an 8 × 8 array of 3 × 3 mm2 multi-pixel photon counters and an 8 × 8 array of 3.11 × 3.11 × 15 mm3 lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate scintillators. The 64-channel individual readout ASIC was used to acquire the position, energy, and time information of a detected gamma ray. A coincidence timing resolution of 187 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) was achieved using a pair of channels of two detector modules. The energy resolution and spatial resolution were 6.6 ± 0.6% FWHM (without energy nonlinearity correction) and 2.5 mm FWHM, respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that the developed TOF brain PET could provide excellent performance, allowing for a reduction in radiation dose or scanning time for brain imaging due to improved sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio.

    Description: Detecting trace amounts of explosives to ensure personal safety is important, and this is possible by using laser-based spectroscopy techniques. We performed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using plasmonic nanogap substrates for the solution phase detection of some nitro-based compounds, taking advantage of the hot spot at the nanogap. An excitation wavelength of 785 nm with an incident power of as low as ≈0.1 mW was used to excite the nanogap substrates. Since both RDX and PETN cannot be dissolved in water, acetone was used as a solvent. TNT was dissolved in water as well as in hexane. The main SERS peaks of TNT, RDX, and PETN were clearly observed down to the order of picomolar concentration. The variations in SERS spectra observed from different explosives can be useful in distinguishing and identifying different nitro-based compounds. This result indicates that our nanogap substrates offer an effective approach for explosives identification.

    Description: Android apps are daily installed by billions of users worldwide, who grant access to an extensive set of sensitive personal data. Different techniques have been developed over the years to understand how apps protect or harm their users’ privacy. However, these results have been produced in different research domains and addressing privacy from different perspectives, resulting in a growing but scattered body of knowledge. To bridge this gap, we have carried out a systematic mapping study to provide practitioners and researchers with an overview of the state-of-the-art technique, published between 2016 and 2020, to assess privacy in Android apps. In this paper, we highlight the most relevant findings, identify and analyse the most pressing gaps, and discuss the promising research directions.

However, the maximum FBW of the filter is limited to 30%, beyond that, its gap size increases, thereby rendering filter fabrication impractical on a standard printed circuit board. In addition, the filter size cannot be changed because it dictates the operational frequency of the filter. Hence, in this study, we propose a compact interdigital BPF based on a spiral and folded stepped impedance resonator (SIR), which affords low IL and excellent group delay. The spiral, folded structure facilitates drastic FBW adjustment: the center frequency and adjustable range of the FBW of the designed BPF are 800 MHz and 80 to 180%, respectively. Additionally, the proposed BPF can adjust the FBW by k-factor which can adjust from 80 to 180%. The insertion and return losses of the proposed filter are 0.043 dB and 17.1 dB, respectively, and the group delay is 0.098 ns. The total filter size is only 13.8 mm × 5.98 mm, which corresponds to a size reduction by factors of 〉2/8 relative to a conventional filter and 2.1 relative to the latest BPF design. The group delay difference between the BPF and other filters is 0.15 ns. In addition, the range of adjustable FBW for the filter is 1.36 times different than for other filters.

    Description: A test suite is a set of test cases that evaluate the quality of software. The aim of whole test suite generation is to create test cases with the highest coverage scores possible. This study investigated the efficiency of a multiple-searching genetic algorithm (MSGA) for whole test suite generation. In previous works, the MSGA has been effectively used in multicast routing of a network system and in the generation of test cases on individual coverage criteria for small- to medium-sized programs. The performance of the algorithms varies depending on the problem instances. In this experiment were generated whole test suites for complex programs. The MSGA was expanded in the EvoSuite test generation tool and compared with the available algorithms on EvoSuite in terms of the number of test cases, the number of statements, mutation score, and coverage score. All algorithms were evaluated on 14 problem instances with different corpus to satisfy multiple coverage criteria. The problem instances were Java open-source projects. Findings demonstrate that the MSGA generated test cases reached greater coverage scores and detected a larger number of faults in the test class when compared with the others.

    Description: This paper presents a dual-mode low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoding architecture that has excellent error-correcting capability and a high parallelism design for fifth-generation (5G) new-radio (NR) applications. We adopted a high parallelism design using a layered decoding schedule to meet the high throughput requirement of 5G NR systems. Although the increase in parallelism can efficiently enhance the throughput, the hardware implementation required to support high parallelism is a significant hardware burden. To efficiently reduce the hardware burden, we used a grouping search rather than a sorter, which was used in the minimum finder with decoding performance loss. Additionally, we proposed a compensation scheme to improve the decoding performance loss by revising the probabilistic second minimum of a grouping search. The post-layout implementation of the proposed dual-mode LDPC decoder is based on the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) 40 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, using a compensation scheme of grouping comparison for 5G communication systems with a working frequency of 294.1 MHz. The decoding throughput achieved was at least 10.86 Gb/s without evaluating early termination, and the decoding power consumption was 313.3 mW.

According to the findings, it was revealed that the trend of publications received its high intention of researchers in 2020, the most important contribution of publications on AI toward sustainability by the Automation in Construction, the United States has the major influence among all the other countries, the main features of civil engineering toward sustainability are interconnectivity, functionality, unpredictability, and individuality. This research adds to the body of knowledge in civil engineering by visualizing and comprehending trends and patterns, as well as defining major research goals, journals, and countries. In addition, a theoretical framework has been proposed in light of the results for prospective researchers and scholars.

    Description: Radars with mmWave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology accurately estimate the range and velocity of targets in their field of view (FoV). The targeted angle of arrival (AoA) estimation can be improved by increasing receiving antennas or by using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). However, obtaining target features such as target type remains challenging. In this paper, we present a novel target classification method based on machine learning and features extracted from a range fast Fourier transform (FFT) profile by using mmWave FMCW radars operating in the frequency range of 77–81 GHz. The measurements are carried out in a variety of realistic situations, including pedestrian, automotive, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) (also known as drone). Peak, width, area, variance, and range are collected from range FFT profile peaks and fed into a machine learning model. In order to evaluate the performance, various light weight classification machine learning models such as logistic regression, Naive Bayes, support vector machine (SVM), and lightweight gradient boosting machine (GBM) are used. We demonstrate our findings by using outdoor measurements and achieve a classification accuracy of 95.6% by using LightGBM. The proposed method will be extremely useful in a wide range of applications, including cost-effective and dependable ground station traffic management and control systems for autonomous operations, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The presented classification technique extends the potential of mmWave FMCW radar beyond the detection of range, velocity, and AoA to classification. mmWave FMCW radars will be more robust in computer vision, visual perception, and fully autonomous ground control and traffic management cyber-physical systems as a result of the added new feature.

    Description: Rayleigh waves are very useful for ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of structural and mechanical components. Nonlinear Rayleigh waves have unique sensitivity to the early stages of material degradation because material nonlinearity causes distortion of the waveforms. The self-interaction of a sinusoidal waveform causes second harmonic generation, while the mutual interaction of waves creates disturbances at the sum and difference frequencies that can potentially be detected with minimal interaction with the nonlinearities in the sensing system. While the effect of surface roughness on attenuation and dispersion is well documented, its effects on the nonlinear aspects of Rayleigh wave propagation have not been investigated. Therefore, Rayleigh waves are sent along aluminum surfaces having small, but different, surface roughness values. The relative nonlinearity parameter increased significantly with surface roughness (average asperity heights 0.027–3.992 μm and Rayleigh wavelengths 0.29–1.9 mm). The relative nonlinearity parameter should be decreased by the presence of attenuation, but here it actually increased with roughness (which increases the attenuation). Thus, an attenuation-based correction was unsuccessful. Since the distortion from material nonlinearity and surface roughness occur over the same surface, it is necessary to make material nonlinearity measurements over surfaces having the same roughness or in the future develop a quantitative understanding of the roughness effect on wave distortion.

    Description: Within the context of structure deterioration studies, we propose a new numerical method based on the use of fragility curves. In particular, the present work aims to theoretically study the degradation of concrete bridge structures subjected to aggressive environments. A simple probabilistic method based on fragility curves is presented which allows the forecasting of the lifetime of the considered structural system and the best monitoring time. The method was applied to investigate the degradation of a concrete bridge used as a case study. A Monte Carlo numerical procedure was used to simulate the variation over time of the residual resistant section and the ultimate bending moment of the deck of the case study. Within this context, fragility curves are used as reliable indicators of possible monitoring scenarios. In comparison with other methods, the main advantage of the proposed approach is the small amount of computing time required to obtain rapid assessment of reliability and deterioration level of the considered structure.

    Description: Greywater has been identified as a valuable alternative water source over recent years. Few practices (i.e., recycling and reuse) of greywater have attracted global attention in meeting the future water demand. However, essential parameters should be analyzed for reliable reuse and treatment. The present study addresses the possibilities of the alternative source with the treated greywater. Gravity—governed flow methods through a column containing gravel, sand, and activated carbon was applied. The quality of treated greywater from the university campus, which included physical, chemical, and biological parameters, was assessed to check non-potable reuse suitability. The reduction percentage of organics in biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand was 64% and 42%, respectively. Similarly, the reduction percentage was obtained at 74% and 66% for turbidity and electrical conductivity. The removal efficiency was 57%, 77%, 48%, and 44% for total dissolved solids, alkalinity, chlorides, and total hardness. The pH of treated water samples was found in the neutral range suggesting its suitability for reuse. Hence, the proposed greywater treatment method is a cost-effective and straightforward approach to reuse greywater for irrigation, watering the lawns, and car washing. The greywater collected can be disinfected immediately and reused with minimal possibility of regrowth of microorganisms.

    Description: This paper proposes a novel coordinated multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) algorithm for energy sharing among multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in order to conduct big-data processing in a distributed manner. For realizing UAV-assisted aerial surveillance or flexible mobile cellular services, robust wireless charging mechanisms are essential for delivering energy sources from charging towers (i.e., charging infrastructure) to their associated UAVs for seamless operations of autonomous UAVs in the sky. In order to actively and intelligently manage the energy resources in charging towers, a MADRL-based coordinated energy management system is desired and proposed for energy resource sharing among charging towers. When the required energy for charging UAVs is not enough in charging towers, the energy purchase from utility company (i.e., energy source provider in local energy market) is desired, which takes high costs. Therefore, the main objective of our proposed coordinated MADRL-based energy sharing learning algorithm is minimizing energy purchase from external utility companies to minimize system-operational costs. Finally, our performance evaluation results verify that the proposed coordinated MADRL-based algorithm achieves desired performance improvements.

    Description: A quad-port antenna array operating in 3.5 GHz band (3.4–3.6 GHz) and 5 GHz band (4.8–5 GHz) for fifth-generation (5G) smartphone applications is presented in this paper. The single antenna element consists of an L-shaped strip, a parasitic rectangle strip, and a modified Z-shaped strip. To reserve space for 2G/3G/4G antennas, the quad-port antenna array is printed along the two long frames of the smartphone. The evolution design and the analysis of the optimal parameters of a single antenna element are derived to investigate the principle of the antenna. The prototype of the presented antenna is tested and the measured results agree well with the simulation. The measured total efficiency is better than 70% and the isolation is larger than 16.5 dB.

    Description: Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are the most important part of electric vehicle (EV) systems. Because there are two different degradation rates during LiB degradation, there are many two-phase models for LiBs. However, most of these methods do not consider the randomness of the changing point in the two-phase model and cannot update the change time in real time. Therefore, this paper proposes a method based on the combination of the two-phase Wiener model and an extreme learning machine (ELM). The two-phase Wiener model is used to derive the mathematical expression of the remaining useful life (RUL), and the ELM is implemented to adaptively detect the changing point. Based on the Poisson distribution, the distribution of the changing time is derived as a gamma distribution. To evaluate the theoretical results and practicality of the proposed method, we perform both numerical and practical simulations. The results of the simulations show that due to the precise and adaptive detection of changing points, the proposed method produces a more accurate RUL prediction than existing methods. The error of our method for detecting the changing point is about 4% and the mean prediction error of RUL in the second phase is improved from 4.39 cycles to 1.61 cycles.

    Description: Our daily life services are quickly becoming smarter with intelligence and information through artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data technologies. Parking services are one of the most frequently used in our daily life-cycle. This parking application could be classified into several features according to demands and properties, such as parking capacity balancing on a city-level view, parking fee maximization for achieving the service provider demand, empty parking spot notification within a parking lot, etc. This paper concentrates on parking space detection and alert to users. Most smart services rely on smart mobile derives of users such as smartphones and smartwatches. The proposed novel mechanism for smart parking is based on a smart device to gather mobile sensing data such as users’ activity and position data. Acquired mobile data are analyzed via machine learning technologies to provide dedicated parking services per user. Based on real testbed setups on campus and the proof-of-concept implementation, the proposed localization can achieve accuracy of a parking spot scale (2m-second guess 95%); moreover, it shows a much lower service operation period of 6.8 times (34s) than the legacy approach (230s).

    Description: Currently, infrared fault diagnosis mainly relies on manual inspection and low detection efficiency. This paper proposes an improved YOLOv3 network for detecting the working state of substation high-voltage lead connectors. Firstly, dilated convolution is introduced into the YOLOv3 backbone network to process low-resolution element layers, so as to enhance the network’s extraction of image features, promote function propagation and reuse, and improve the network’s recognition performance of small targets. Then the fault detection model of the infrared image of the high voltage lead connector is created and the optimal infrared image test data set is obtained through multi-scale training. Finally, the performance of the improved network model is tested on the data set. The test results show that the improved YOLOv3 network model has an average detection accuracy of 84.26% for infrared image faults of high-voltage lead connectors, which is 4.58% higher than the original YOLOv3 network model. The improved YOLOv3 network model has an average detection time of 0.308 s for infrared image faults of high-voltage lead connectors, which can be used for real-time detection in substations.

    Description: Because modern electronic systems are likely to be exposed to high intensity radiated fields (HIRF) environments, there is growing interest in understanding how electronic systems are affected by such environments. Backdoor coupling in particular is an area of concern for all electronics, but there is limited understanding about the mechanisms behind backdoor coupling. In this work, we present a study on printed circuit board (PCB) backdoor coupling and the effects of via fencing. Existing work focuses on ideal stackups and indicates that edge radiation is significantly reduced by via fencing. In this study, both full wave electromagnetic modeling and experimental verification are used to investigate both ideal and practical PCB stackups. In the ideal scenario, we find that via fencing substantially reduces coupling, which is consistent with prior work on emissions. In the practical scenario, we incorporate component footprints and traces which naturally introduce openings in the top ground plane. Both simulation and experimental data indicate that via fencing in the practical scenario does not substantially mitigate coupling, suggesting that PCB edge coupling is not the dominant coupling mechanism, even at varying angles of incidence and polarization.

    Description: Deep learning technology has improved the performance of vision-based action recognition algorithms, but such methods require a large number of labeled training datasets, resulting in weak universality. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel self-deployable ubiquitous action recognition framework that enables a self-motivated user to bootstrap and deploy action recognition services, called FOLLOWER. Our main idea is to build a “fingerprint” library of actions based on a small number of user-defined sample action data. Then, we use the matching method to complete action recognition. The key step is how to construct a suitable “fingerprint”. Thus, a pose action normalized feature extraction method based on a three-dimensional pose sequence is designed. FOLLOWER is mainly composed of the guide process and follow the process. Guide process extracts pose action normalized feature and selects the inner class central feature to build a “fingerprint” library of actions. Follow process extracts the pose action normalized feature in the target video and uses the motion detection, action filtering, and adaptive weight offset template to identify the action in the video sequence. Finally, we collect an action video dataset with human pose annotation to research self-deployable action recognition and action recognition based on pose estimation. After experimenting on this dataset, the results show that FOLLOWER can effectively recognize the actions in the video sequence with recognition accuracy reaching 96.74%.

    Description: The control of glucose concentration is a crucial factor in clinical diagnosis and the food industry. Electrochemical biosensors based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and conducting polymers have a high potential for practical application. A novel thermal reduction protocol of graphene oxide (GO) in the presence of malonic acid was applied for the synthesis of rGO. The rGO was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. rGO in combination with polyaniline (PANI), Nafion, and glucose oxidase (GOx) was used to develop an amperometric glucose biosensor. A graphite rod (GR) electrode premodified with a dispersion of PANI nanostructures and rGO, Nafion, and GOx was proposed as the working electrode of the biosensor. The optimal ratio of PANI and rGO in the dispersion used as a matrix for GOx immobilization was equal to 1:10. The developed glucose biosensor was characterized by a wide linear range (from 0.5 to 50 mM), low limit of detection (0.089 mM), good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Therefore, the developed biosensor is suitable for glucose determination in human serum. The PANI nanostructure and rGO dispersion is a promising material for the construction of electrochemical glucose biosensors.

    Description: A new optical fiber sensor based on the fluorescence lifetime was prepared for specific detection of sulfate ion concentration, where 1,1′-(anthracene-9,10-diylbis(methylene))bis(3-(dodecylcarbamoyl)pyridin-1-ium) acted as the sulfate fluorescent probe. The probe was immobilized in a porous cellulose acetate membrane to form the sensitive membrane by the immersion precipitation method, and polyethylene glycol 400 acted as a porogen. The sensing principle was proven, as a sulfate ion could form a complex with the probe through a hydrogen bond, which led to structural changes and fluorescence for the probe. The signals of the fluorescence lifetime data were collected by the lock-in amplifier and converted into the phase delay to realize the detection of sulfate ions. Based on the phase-modulated fluorometry, the relationship between the phase delay of the probe and the sulfate ion concentration was described in the range from 2 to 10 mM. The specificity and response time of this optical fiber sensor were also researched.

    Description: The actively heated fiber optics (AHFO) technique has the potential to measure soil water at high spatial and temporal resolutions, and thus it can bridge the measurement gap from point to large scales. However, the availability of power might restrict its use, since high power is required to heat long fiber optic cables under field conditions; this can be a challenge for long-term soil water monitoring under field conditions. This study investigated the performance of different heating strategies (power intensity and heating duration) on soil water measurement by the AHFO technique on three different textured soils. Different heating strategies: high power–short pulses (20 Wm−1–3 min), low power–short pulses (10 Wm−1–3 min, 5 Wm−1–3 min, 2.5 Wm−1–3 min) and low power–long pulses (10 Wm−1–5 min, 5 Wm−1–10 min, 2.5 Wm−1–15 min) were tested using laboratory soil columns. The study compared the sensitivity of the thermal response, NTcum to volumetric water content (VWC) and the predictive error of different heating strategies and soils. Results of this study showed that the sensitivity of NTcum increased and the predictive error decreased with increasing power intensity, irrespective of the soil type. Low power–short heat pulses such as 5 Wm−1–3 min and 2.5 Wm−1–3 min produced high predictive errors, RMSE of 5–6% and 6–7%, respectively. However, extending the heating duration was effective in reducing the error for both 10 and 5 Wm−1 power intensities, but not for the 2.5 Wm−1. The improvement was particularly noticeable in 5 Wm−1 –10 min; it reduced the RMSE by 1.5% (sand and clay loam) and 2.73% (sandy loam). Overall, the results of this study suggested that extending the heating duration of 10 and 5 Wm−1 power intensities can improve the sensitivity of the thermal response and predictive accuracy of the estimated soil water content (SWC). The results are particularly important for field applications of the AHFO technique, which can be limited by the availability of high power, which restricts the use of 20 Wm−1. For example, 5 Wm−1–10 min improved the predictive accuracy to 3–4%, which has the potential to be used for validating soil water estimations at satellite footprint scales. However, the effects of diurnal temperature variations should also be considered, particularly when using low power intensity such as 5 Wm−1 in surface soils under field conditions.

    Description: Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals play a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring patients suffering from various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This research aims to develop a robust algorithm that can accurately classify the electrocardiogram signal even in the presence of environmental noise. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) with two convolutional layers, two down-sampling layers, and a fully connected layer is proposed in this work. The same 1D data was transformed into two-dimensional (2D) images to improve the model’s classification accuracy. Then, we applied the 2D CNN model consisting of input and output layers, three 2D-convolutional layers, three down-sampling layers, and a fully connected layer. The classification accuracy of 97.38% and 99.02% is achieved with the proposed 1D and 2D model when tested on the publicly available Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) arrhythmia database. Both proposed 1D and 2D CNN models outperformed the corresponding state-of-the-art classification algorithms for the same data, which validates the proposed models’ effectiveness.

    Description: The emergence of very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery (less than 1 m spatial resolution) is creating new opportunities within the fields of ecology and conservation biology. The advancement of sub-meter resolution imagery has provided greater confidence in the detection and identification of features on the ground, broadening the realm of possible research questions. To date, VHR imagery studies have largely focused on terrestrial environments; however, there has been incremental progress in the last two decades for using this technology to detect cetaceans. With advances in computational power and sensor resolution, the feasibility of broad-scale VHR ocean surveys using VHR satellite imagery with automated detection and classification processes has increased. Initial attempts at automated surveys are showing promising results, but further development is necessary to ensure reliability. Here we discuss the future directions in which VHR satellite imagery might be used to address urgent questions in whale conservation. We highlight the current challenges to automated detection and to extending the use of this technology to all oceans and various whale species. To achieve basin-scale marine surveys, currently not feasible with any traditional surveying methods (including boat-based and aerial surveys), future research requires a collaborative effort between biology, computation science, and engineering to overcome the present challenges to this platform’s use.

Recently, an anti-counterfeiting protocol to address this issue via radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology was proposed by researchers. Yet, the use case of reselling the same product has not been fully addressed which might cause serious problems for the exciting and proposed schemes and transactions. This paper proposes an extended RFID-based anti-counterfeiting protocol to address the use case of the original buyer reselling the same item to a second buyer. We will follow the proposed extended scheme with a formal security analysis to prove that the proposed protocol is secure and immune against most known security attacks.

    Description: An FTL (flash translation layer), which most flash storage devices are equipped with, needs to guarantee the consistency of modified metadata from a sudden power failure. This crash recovery scheme significantly affects the writing performance of a flash storage device during its normal operation, as well as its reliability and recovery performance; therefore, it is desirable to make the crash recovery scheme efficient. Despite the practical importance of a crash recovery scheme in an FTL, few works exist that deal with the crash recovery issue in FTL in a comprehensive manner. This study proposed a novel crash recovery scheme called FastCheck for a hybrid mapping FTL called Fully Associative Sector Translation (FAST). FastCheck can efficiently secure the newly generated address-mapping information using periodic checkpoints, and at the same time, leverages the characteristics of an FAST FTL, where the log blocks in a log area are used in a round-robin way. Thus, it provides two major advantages over the existing FTL recovery schemes: one is having a low logging overhead during normal operations in the FTL and the other to have a fast recovery time in an environment where the log provisioning rate is relatively high, e.g., over 20%, and the flash memory capacity is very large, e.g., 32 GB or 64 GB.

    Description: Guidance, navigation, and control system design is, undoubtedly, one of the most relevant issues in any type of unmanned aerial vehicle, especially in the case of military missions. This task needs to be performed in the most efficient way possible, which involves trying to satisfy a set of requirements that are sometimes in opposition. The purpose of this article was to compare two different control strategies in conjunction with a path-planning and guidance system with the objective of completing military missions in the most satisfactory way. For this purpose, a novel dynamic trajectory-planning algorithm is employed, which can obtain an appropriate trajectory by analyzing the environment as a discrete 3D adaptive mesh and performs a softening process a posteriori. Moreover, two multivariable control techniques are proposed, i.e., the linear quadratic regulator and the model predictive control, which were designed to offer optimal responses in terms of stability and robustness.

    Description: After a disaster happens, effective communication and information sharing between emergency response team members play a crucial role in a successful disaster response phase. With dedicated roles and missions are assigned to responders, role-based communication is a pivotal feature that an emergency communication network needs to support. Previous works have shown that Named Data Networking (NDN) has many advantages over traditional IP-based networks in providing this feature. However, these studies are only simulation-based. To apply NDN in disaster scenarios, real implementation of a deployment architecture over existing infrastructure during the disaster should be considered. Not only should it ensure efficient emergency communication, but the architecture should deal with other disaster-related challenges such as responder mobility, intermittent network, and replacement possibility due to disaster damage. In this paper, we designed and implemented an NDN-based disaster response support system over Edge Computing infrastructure with KubeEdge as the chosen edge platform to solve the above issues. Our proof-of-concept system performance shows that the architecture achieved efficient role-based communication support, fast mobility handover duration, quick network convergence time in case of node replacement, and loss-free information exchange between responders and the management center on the cloud.

    Description: We demonstrate spectroscopic imaging using a compact ultra-broadband terahertz semiconductor source with a high-power, mid-infrared quantum cascade laser. The electrically pumped monolithic source is based on intra-cavity difference-frequency generation and can be designed to achieve an ultra-broadband multi-mode terahertz emission spectrum extending from 1–4 THz without any external optical setup. Spectroscopic imaging was performed with three frequency bands, 2.0 THz, 2.5 THz and 3.0 THz, and as a result, this imaging technique clearly identified three different tablet components (polyethylene, D-histidine and DL-histidine). This method may be highly suitable for quality monitoring of pharmaceutical materials.

    Description: The paper presents some investigation results on the properties of forced cooling systems dedicated to electronic devices. Different structures of such systems, including Peltier modules, heat sinks, fans, and thermal interfaces, are considered. Compact thermal models of such systems are formulated. These models take into account a multipath heat transfer and make it possible to compute waveforms of the device’s internal temperature at selected values of the power dissipated in the device. The analytical formulas describing the dependences of the thermal resistance of electronic devices co-operating with the considered cooling systems on the power dissipated in the cooled electronic device and the power feeding the Peltier module and the speed of airflow caused by a fan are proposed. The correctness of the proposed models is verified experimentally in a wide range of powers dissipated in electronic devices operating in different configurations of the used cooling system.

    Description: Compact double notch coplanar and microstrip bandstop filters are described. They are based on a version of the open interconnected split ring resonator (OISRR) integrated in microstrip or coplanar waveguides. The OISRR introduces an RLC resonator connected in parallel with the propagating microstrip line. Therefore, this resonator can be modeled as a shunt circuit to ground, with the R, L and C elements connected in series. The consequence for the frequency response of the device is a notch band at the resonant frequency of the RLC shunt circuit. The number of notch bands can be controlled by adding more OISRRs, since each pair of rings can be modeled as a shunt circuit and therefore introduces an additional notch band. In this paper, we demonstrate that these additional rings can be introduced in a concentric way in the same cell, so the size of the device does not increase and a compact multi-notch bandstop response is achieved, with the same number of notch bands as pairs of concentric rings, plus an additional spurious band at a higher frequency.

    Description: The internet-of-things (IoT) is expected to have a transformative impact in several different domains, including energy management in smart grids, manufacturing, transportation, smart cities and communities, smart food and farming, and healthcare. To this direction, the maintenance cost of IoT deployments has been identified as one of the main challenges, which is directly related to energy efficiency and autonomy of IoT solutions. In order to increase the energy sustainability of next-generation IoT, wireless power transfer (WPT) emerged as a promising technology; however, its effectiveness is hindered as the distance between the base station and the wireless powered IoT devices increases. To counter this effect, decentralized approaches based on the use of distributed densely deployed remote radio heads (RRHs) can be utilized to diminish the distance between the transmitting and the receiving nodes. A trade-off ensues from the use of RRHs as power beacons (PBs) or access points (APs) that enable either energy transfer during downlink or information reception during uplink, respectively. To balance this trade-off, in this work, the maximization of the ergodic rate in ultra-dense wireless powered networks is investigated. In more detail, three different protocols are introduced, optimized, and compared to each other: density splitting, time splitting, and hybrid time and density splitting, which are based on the optimization of the portion of the number of RRHs that are employed as PBs or APs at a specific time instance. Additionally, two different policies are taken into account regarding the PBs’ power constraint. The formulated problems that correspond to the combination of the proposed protocols with each of the two considered power constraint policies are optimally solved by using convex optimization tools and closed-form solutions are derived that result to useful insights. Finally, numerical results are provided, which illustrate the ergodic rate achieved by each of the proposed protocols and offer interesting conclusions regarding their comparison, which are directly linked to design guidelines and the required capital and operational expenses.

    Description: Phacoemulsification is a widely used surgical method in cataract surgery with a high energy ultrasound source. The viscoelastic is considered to be tissue protective. The aim of this study is to investigate during surgery the impact of using viscoelastic versus no viscoelastic on clinical outcomes, potential complications and effect on endothelial cell density. The study group included 64 patients, who were subjected to phacoemulsification using balanced salt solution (BSS). Control group consisted of 62 patients, who underwent phacoemulsification using Hyaloronic acid 1% Healon 1%. Student’s t-test was applied for statistical analysis. The simulations of temperature changes during phacoemulsification were performed by COMSOL Multiphysics software. In the BSS group, a mean endothelial cell loss (ECL) of 4.5% was measured one month postoperatively, while in the Healon group ECL was 5.3%. Data analysis showed no significant difference in ECL between the groups (Student’s t-test, p = 0.8). No significant difference was observed in endothelial cell morphology and IOP between the two groups pre- and postoperatively (all p 〉 0.05). The modeling of thermo fluid dynamics showed that the heating of the cornea is slightly less when Healon was used as irrigation fluid. The phacoemulsification technique can be performed by an experienced surgeon with viscoelastics or continuous anterior chamber (AC) irrigation on the same level of safety regarding endothelial cell damage, providing equally satisfying clinical outcomes.

    Description: In this paper, a joint multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO OFDM) radar and communication (RadCom) system is proposed, in which orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms carrying data to be transmitted to the information receiver are exploited to get high-resolution radar images at the RadCom platform. Specifically, to get two-dimensional (i.e., range and azimuth angle) radar images with high resolution, a compressive sensing-based imaging algorithm is proposed that is applicable to the signal received through multiple receive antennas. Because both the radar imaging performance (i.e., the mean square error of the radar image) and the communication performance (i.e., the achievable rate) are affected by the subcarrier allocation across multiple transmit antennas, by analyzing both radar imaging and communication performances, we also propose a subcarrier allocation strategy such that a high achievable rate is obtained without sacrificing the radar imaging performance.

    Description: This research is focused on searching for frequency and noise characteristics for available GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). The authors illustrated frequency stability and noise characteristics for a selected set of data from four different GNSS systems. For this purpose, 30-s-interval clock corrections were used for the GPS weeks 1982–2034 (the entirety of 2018). Firstly, phase data (raw clock corrections) were preprocessed for shifts and removal of outliers; GLONASS and GPS satellites characterize a smaller number of outliers than BeiDou and Galileo clock products. Secondly, frequency and Hadamard deviation were calculated. This study concludes that the stability of GPS and Galileo is better than that of BDS (BeiDou Navigation Satellite System) and GLONASS. Regarding noise, the GPS, Galileo, and BDS clocks are affected by the random walk modulation noise (RWFM), flashing frequency modulation noise (FFM), and white frequency modulation noise (WFM), whereas the GLONASS clocks are mainly affected only by WFM.

    Description: In this paper, we propose a new approach to the attitude control of quadrotors, by which angular velocity measurements or a model-based observer reconstructing the angular velocity are not needed. The proposed approach is based on recent stability results obtained for nonlinear negative imaginary systems. In specific, through an inner-outer loop method, we establish the nonlinear negative imaginary property of the quadrotor rotational subsystem. Then, a strictly negative imaginary controller is synthesized using the nonlinear negative imaginary results. This guarantees the robust asymptotic stability of the attitude of the quadrotor in the face of modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. First simulation results underline the effectiveness of the proposed attitude control approach are presented.

    Description: Within an increasingly connected world, the exponential growth in the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) applications presents a significant challenge in power and data transfer optimisation. Currently, the maximization of Radio Frequency (RF) system power gain depends on the design of efficient, commercial chips, and on the integration of these chips by using complex RF simulations to verify bespoke configurations. However, even if a standard 50Ω transmitter’s chip has an efficiency of 90%, the overall power efficiency of the RF system can be reduced by 10% if coupled with a standard antenna of 72Ω. Hence, it is necessary for scalable IoT networks to have optimal RF system design for every transceiver: for example, impedance mismatching between a transmitter’s antenna and chip leads to a significant reduction of the corresponding RF system’s overall power efficiency. This work presents a versatile design framework, based on well-known theoretical methods (i.e., transducer gain, power wave approach, transmission line theory), for the optimal design in terms of power delivered to a load of a typical RF system, which consists of an antenna, a matching network, a load (e.g., integrated circuit) and transmission lines which connect all these parts. The aim of this design framework is not only to reduce the computational effort needed for the design and prototyping of power efficient RF systems, but also to increase the accuracy of the analysis, based on the explanatory analysis within our design framework. Simulated and measured results verify the accuracy of this proposed design framework over a 0–4 GHz spectrum. Finally, a case study based on the design of an RF system for Bluetooth applications demonstrates the benefits of this RF design framework.

    Description: Weather change such as raining is a crucial factor to cause traffic congestion, especially in metropolises with the limited sewer system infrastructures. Identifying the roads which are sensitive to weather changes, defined as weather-sensitive roads (WSR), can facilitate the infrastructure development. In the literature, little research focused on studying weather factors of developing countries that might have deficient infrastructures. In this research, to fill the gap, the real-world data associating with Jakarta, Indonesia, was studied to identify WSR based on smartphone sensor data, real-time weather information, and road characteristics datasets. A spatial-temporal congestion speed matrix (STC) was proposed to illustrate traffic speed changes over time. Under the proposed STC, a sequential clustering and classification framework was applied to identify the WSR in terms of traffic speed. In this work, the causes of WSR were evaluated based on the variables’ importance of the classification method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can cluster the roads according to the pattern changes in the traffic speed caused by weather change. Based on the results, we found that the distances to shopping malls, mosques, schools, and the roads’ altitude, length, width, and the number of lanes are highly correlated to WSR in Jakarta.

    Description: High stress levels and sleep deprivation may cause several mental or physical health issues, such as depression, impaired memory, decreased motivation, obesity, etc. The COVID-19 pandemic has produced unprecedented changes in our lives, generating significant stress, and worries about health, social isolation, employment, and finances. To this end, nowadays more than ever, it is crucial to deliver solutions that can help people to manage and control their stress, as well as to reduce sleep disturbances, so as to improve their health and overall quality of life. Technology, and in particular Ambient Intelligence Environments, can help towards that direction, when considering that they are able to understand the needs of their users, identify their behavior, learn their preferences, and act and react in their interest. This work presents two systems that have been designed and developed in the context of an Intelligent Home, namely CaLmi and HypnOS, which aim to assist users that struggle with stress and poor sleep quality, respectively. Both of the systems rely on real-time data collected by wearable devices, as well as contextual information retrieved from the ambient facilities of the Intelligent Home, so as to offer appropriate pervasive relaxation programs (CaLmi) or provide personalized insights regarding sleep hygiene (HypnOS) to the residents. This article will describe the design process that was followed, the functionality of both systems, the results of the user studies that were conducted for the evaluation of their end-user applications, and a discussion about future plans.

    Description: Recent studies have applied the superior performance of deep learning to mobile devices, and these studies have enabled the running of the deep learning model on a mobile device with limited computing power. However, there is performance degradation of the deep learning model when it is deployed in mobile devices, due to the different sensors of each device. To solve this issue, it is necessary to train a network model specific to each mobile device. Therefore, herein, we propose an acceleration method for on-device learning to mitigate the device heterogeneity. The proposed method efficiently utilizes unified memory for reducing the latency of data transfer during network model training. In addition, we propose the layer-wise processor selection method to consider the latency generated by the difference in the processor performing the forward propagation step and the backpropagation step in the same layer. The experiments were performed on an ODROID-XU4 with the ResNet-18 model, and the experimental results indicate that the proposed method reduces the latency by at most 28.4% compared to the central processing unit (CPU) and at most 21.8% compared to the graphics processing unit (GPU). Through experiments using various batch sizes to measure the average power consumption, we confirmed that device heterogeneity is alleviated by performing on-device learning using the proposed method.

    Description: Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring has become an optional technology to quantify slope deformation. However, there are still challenges in developing generic AE interpretation strategies. Dynamics and kinematics models are two physical methods for analysing slope stability, which appear to improve the interpretability of AE monitoring data. The aim of this study is to explore the change patterns and interrelations of dynamics, kinematics, and AE measurements using a model test and physical analysis, to further understand the development process of a progressive landslide. A model test is designed based on the kinematics model of landslide three-stage deformation. An equation between factor of safety (FoS) and thrust is proposed based on the mechanical model of a landslide test. There is a clear correspondence between the displacement and inverse velocity during the deformation-controlled process. Relationships are uncovered between the thrust and FoS as well as the thrust and acceleration. As a characteristic parameter of AE, ring down count (RDC) is able to quantify the deformation process of the soil slope. Moreover, acceleration and RDC can reflect the sudden change of the slope state and, hence, can be effective indicators for the early warning in a progressive landslide.

    Description: Fatigued driving is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. The electroencephalogram (EEG)-based mental state analysis method is an effective and objective way of detecting fatigue. However, as EEG shows significant differences across subjects, effectively “transfering” the EEG analysis model of the existing subjects to the EEG signals of other subjects is still a challenge. Domain-Adversarial Neural Network (DANN) has excellent performance in transfer learning, especially in the fields of document analysis and image recognition, but has not been applied directly in EEG-based cross-subject fatigue detection. In this paper, we present a DANN-based model, Generative-DANN (GDANN), which combines Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to enhance the ability by addressing the issue of different distribution of EEG across subjects. The comparative results show that in the analysis of cross-subject tasks, GDANN has a higher average accuracy of 91.63% in fatigue detection across subjects than those of traditional classification models, which is expected to have much broader application prospects in practical brain–computer interaction (BCI).

    Description: Object detection is an indispensable part of autonomous driving. It is the basis of other high-level applications. For example, autonomous vehicles need to use the object detection results to navigate and avoid obstacles. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale MobileNeck module and an algorithm to improve the performance of an object detection model by outputting a series of Gaussian parameters. These Gaussian parameters can be used to predict both the locations of detected objects and the localization confidences. Based on the above two methods, a new confidence-aware Mobile Detection (MobileDet) model is proposed. The MobileNeck module and loss function are easy to conduct and integrate with Generalized-IoU (GIoU) metrics with slight changes in the code. We test the proposed model on the KITTI and VOC datasets. The mean Average Precision (mAP) is improved by 3.8 on the KITTI dataset and 2.9 on the VOC dataset with less resource consumption.

    Description: The preservation of cultural heritage assets of all kind is an important task for modern civilizations. This also includes tools and instruments that have been used in the previous decades and centuries. Along with the industrial revolution 200 years ago, mechanical and electrical technologies emerged, together with optical instruments. In the meantime, it is not only museums who showcase these developments, but also companies, universities, and private institutions. Gyroscopes are fascinating instruments with a history dating back 200 years. When J.G.F. Bohnenberger presented his machine to his students in 1810 at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, nobody could have foreseen that this fascinating development would be used for complex orientation and positioning. At the University of Stuttgart, Germany, a collection of 160 exhibits is available and in transition towards their sustainable future. Here, the systems are digitized in 2D, 2.5D, and 3D and are made available for a worldwide community using open access platforms. The technologies being used are computed tomography, computer vision, endoscopy, and photogrammetry. We present a novel workflow for combining voxel representations and colored point clouds, to create digital twins of the physical objects with 0.1 mm precision. This has not yet been investigated and is therefore pioneering work. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed and suggested work for the near future is outlined in this new and challenging field of tech heritage digitization.

    Description: In this paper, we discuss the critical characteristics of user experience in sixth generation (6G) cellular networks. We first describe cellular networks’ evolution through 5G and then discuss the enabling technologies and projected services in 6G networks. We note that these networks are markedly centered around expanded intelligence, end-to-end resource and topology synchronization, and the intrinsic support to low-latency, high-bandwidth communication. These capabilities make context-rich, cyberphysical user experiences viable. It thereby becomes necessary to define and identify the role of quality of experience in 6G networks, especially when it comes to network management. We elaborate on these expected challenges and allude to viable opportunities in emerging technologies.

    Description: With the development of smart vehicles and various vehicular applications, Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC) paradigm has attracted from academic and industry. Compared with the cloud computing platform, VEC has several new features, such as the higher network bandwidth and the lower transmission delay. Recently, vehicular computation-intensive task offloading has become a new research field for the vehicular edge computing networks. However, dynamic network topology and the bursty computation tasks offloading, which causes to the computation load unbalancing for the VEC networking. To solve this issue, this paper proposed an optimal control-based computing task scheduling algorithm. Then, we introduce software defined networking/OpenFlow framework to build a software-defined vehicular edge networking structure. The proposed algorithm can obtain global optimum results and achieve the load-balancing by the virtue of the global load status information. Besides, the proposed algorithm has strong adaptiveness in dynamic network environments by automatic parameter tuning. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the utilization of computation resources and meet the requirements of computation and transmission delay for various vehicular tasks.

    Description: Sleep disruption from causes, such as changes in lifestyle, stress from aging, family issues, or life pressures are a growing phenomenon that can lead to serious health problems. As such, sleep disorders need to be identified and addressed early on. In recent years, studies have investigated sleep patterns through body movement information collected by wristwatch-type devices or cameras. However, these methods capture only the individual’s awake and sleep states and lack sufficient information to identify specific sleep stages. The aim of this study was to use a 3-axis accelerometer attached to an individual’s head to capture information that can identify three specific sleep stages: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, light sleep, and deep sleep. These stages are measured by heart rate features captured by a ballistocardiogram and body movement. The sleep experiment was conducted for two nights among eight healthy adult men. According to the leave-one-out cross-validation results, the F-scores were: awake 76.6%, REM sleep 52.7%, light sleep 78.2%, and deep sleep 67.8%. The accuracy was 74.6% for the four estimates. This proposed measurement system was able to estimate the sleep stages with high accuracy simply by using the acceleration in the individual’s head.

    Description: When a wireless sensor node’s wireless communication fails after being deployed in an inaccessible area, the lost node cannot be repaired through a debugging interaction that relies on that communication. Visible light communication (VLC) as a supplement of radio wave communication can improve the transmission security at the physical layer due to its unidirectional propagation characteristic. Therefore, we implemented a VLC-based hybrid communication debugging system (HCDS) based on VLC using smartphone and sensor node. For the system’s downlink, the smartphone is taken as the VLC gateway and sends the debugging codes to the sensor node by the flashlight. To improve the transmission efficiency of the downlink, we also propose a new coding method for source coding and channel coding, respectively. For the source coding, we analyze the binary instructions and compress the operands using bitmask techniques. The average compression rate of the binary structure reaches 84.11%. For the channel coding, we optimize dual-header pulse interval (DH-PIM) and propose overlapped DH-PIM (ODH-PIM) by introducing a flashlight half-on state. The flashlight half-on state can improve the representation capability of individual symbols. For the uplink of HCDS, we use the onboard LED of the sensor node to transmit feedback debugging information to the smartphone. At the same time, we design a novel encoding format of DH-PIM to optimize uplink transmission. Experimental results show that the optimized uplink transmission time and BER are reduced by 10.71% and 22%, compared with the original DH-PIM.

    Description: A 2.4 GHz flexible monopole antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) was presented on polyimide (PI) as the dielectric substrate, which was fabricated by in situ self-metallization. The technology does not depend on expensive equipment or complex experimental environments, including hydrolysis, ion exchange, and reduction reaction. The measurement results show that the resonance frequency of the proposed antenna is 2.28 GHz, the bandwidth is 2.06–2.74 GHz, and the relative bandwidth is 28.33% under the flat state. The bending and folding test was also carried out. Whether it was flat, bent, or folded, the measured results met the requirements of the antenna. A fatigue test was carried out to illustrate that the prepared film has high mechanical flexibility, which expands the application field of antenna.

    Description: A microstrip-fed air-substrate-integrated waveguide (ASIW) slot array with high efficiency and low cost is presented. The design cuts out the substrate material within SIW, replaces the vias with metallic sidewalls, and uses a simple microstrip line-waveguide transition to feed the slot array. Radiating slots are cut on a 5-mil brass-plate, which covers the top of the substrate cutout to resemble a hollow waveguide structure. This implementation provides a simple and efficient antenna array solution for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) applications. Meanwhile, the fabrication is compatible with the standard printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing process. To demonstrate the concept, a 4-element ASIW slot array working at the n257 band for 5G communications was designed using low-cost Rogers 4350B and FR4 substrate materials. Our simulation result shows 18% more efficiency than a conventional SIW slot array using the same substrate. The fabricated prototype shows |S11| 〈 −15 dB over 27–29 GHz and a peak realized gain of 10.1 dBi at 28.6 GHz. The design procedure, prototyping process, and design analysis are discussed in the paper.

    Description: The use of high κ dielectrics lowers the operating voltage in organic field-effect transistors (FETs). Polymer ferroelectrics open the path not just for high κ values but allow processing of the dielectric films via electrical poling. Poled ferroelectric dielectrics in p-type organic FETs was seen to improve carrier mobility and reduce leakage current when compared to unpoled devices using the same dielectric. For n-type FETs, solution-processed ZnO films provide a viable low-cost option. UV–ozone-treated ZnO films was seen to improve the FET performance due to the filling of oxygen vacancies. P-type FETs were fabricated using the ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) as the dielectric along with a donor–acceptor polymer based on diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP-DTT) as the semiconductor layer. The DPP-DTT FETs yield carrier mobilities upwards of 0.4 cm2/Vs and high on/off ratios when the PVDF-TrFE layer is electrically poled. For n-type FETs, UV–ozone-treated sol–gel ZnO films on SiO2 yield carrier mobilities of 10−2 cm2/Vs. DPP-DTT-based p- and ZnO-based n-type FETs were used in a complementary voltage inverter circuit, showing promising characteristic gain. A basic inverter model was used to simulate the inverter characteristics, using parameters from the individual FET characteristics.

    Description: Fringe projection profilometry in combination with other optical measuring technologies has established itself over the last decades as an essential complement to conventional, tactile measuring devices. The non-contact, holistic reconstruction of complex geometries within fractions of a second in conjunction with the lightweight and transportable sensor design open up many fields of application in production metrology. Furthermore, triangulation-based measuring principles feature good scalability, which has led to 3D scanners for various scale ranges. Innovative and modern production processes, such as sheet-bulk metal forming, thus, utilize fringe projection profilometry in many respects to monitor the process, quantify possible wear and improve production technology. Therefore, it is essential to identify the appropriate 3D scanner for each application and to properly evaluate the acquired data. Through precise knowledge of the measurement volume and the relative uncertainty with respect to the specimen and scanner position, adapted measurement strategies and integrated production concepts can be realized. Although there are extensive industrial standards and guidelines for the quantification of sensor performance, evaluation and tolerancing is mainly global and can, therefore, neither provide assistance in the correct, application-specific positioning and alignment of the sensor nor reflect the local characteristics within the measuring volume. Therefore, this article compares fringe projection systems across various scale ranges by positioning and scanning a calibrated sphere in a high resolution grid.

    Description: Indoor localization is an enabling technology for pervasive and mobile computing applications. Although different technologies have been proposed for indoor localization, Wi-Fi fingerprinting is one of the most used techniques due to the pervasiveness of Wi-Fi technology. Most Wi-Fi fingerprinting localization methods presented in the literature are discriminative methods. We present a generative method for indoor localization based on Wi-Fi fingerprinting. The Received Signal Strength Indicator received from a Wireless Access Point is modeled by a hidden Markov model. Unlike other algorithms, the use of a hidden Markov model allows ours to take advantage of the temporal autocorrelation present in the Wi-Fi signal. The algorithm estimates the user’s location based on the hidden Markov model, which models the signal and the forward algorithm to determine the likelihood of a given time series of Received Signal Strength Indicators. The proposed method was compared with four other well-known Machine Learning algorithms through extensive experimentation with data collected in real scenarios. The proposed method obtained competitive results in most scenarios tested and was the best method in 17 of 60 experiments performed.

    Description: Millimeter-wave (W-band) radar measurements were taken for two maritime targets instrumented with attitude and heading reference systems (AHRSs) in a littoral environment with the aim of developing a multiaspect classifier. The focus was on resource-limited implementations such as short-range, tactical, unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) and dealing with limited and imbalanced datasets. Radar imaging and preprocessing consisted of recording high-resolution range profiles (HRRPs) and performing range alignment using peak detection and fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). HRRPs were used because of their simplicity, reliability, and speed. The features used were fixed-length, frequency domain range profiles. Two linear support vector machine (SVM)-based classifiers were developed which both yielded excellent results in their general forms and were simple to implement. The first approach utilized the positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) statistics of the SVM directly to generate target probabilities and consequently determine the optimal aspect transitions for classification. The second approach used the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for dimensionality reduction, followed by concatenating feature vectors across several aspects. The latter approach is particularly well-suited to resource-constrained scenarios, potentially allowing for retraining and updating in the field.

    Description: We investigated agent-based model simulations that mimic an ant transportation system to analyze the cooperative perception and communication in the system. On a trail, ants use cooperative perception through chemotaxis to maintain a constant average velocity irrespective of their density, thereby avoiding traffic jams. Using model simulations and approximate mathematical representations, we analyzed various aspects of the communication system and their effects on cooperative perception in ant traffic. Based on the analysis, insights about the cooperative perception of ants which facilitate decentralized self-organization is presented. We also present values of communication-parameters in ant traffic, where the system conveys traffic conditions to individual ants, which ants use to self-organize and avoid traffic-jams. The mathematical analysis also verifies our findings and provides a better understanding of various model parameters leading to model improvements.

    Description: Most indoor positioning systems require calibration before use. Fingerprinting requires the construction of a signal strength map, while ranging systems need the coordinates of the beacons. Calibration approaches exist for positioning systems that use Wi-Fi, radio frequency identification or ultrawideband. However, few examples are available for the calibration of visible light positioning systems. Most works focused on obtaining the channel model parameters or performed a calibration based on known receiver locations. In this paper, we describe an improved procedure that uses a mobile robot for data collection and is able to obtain a map of the environment with the beacon locations and their identities. Compared to previous work, the error is almost halved. Additionally, this approach does not require prior knowledge of the number of light sources or the receiver location. We demonstrate that the system performs well under a wide range of lighting conditions and investigate the influence of parameters such as the robot trajectory, camera resolution and field of view. Finally, we also close the loop between calibration and positioning and show that our approach has similar or better accuracy than manual calibration.

    Description: This paper is concerned with relative localization-based optimal area coverage placement using multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It is assumed that only one of the UAVs has its global position information before performing the area coverage task and that ranging measurements can be obtained among the UAVs by using ultra-wide band (UWB) sensors. In this case, multi-UAV relative localization and cooperative coverage control have to be run simultaneously, which is a quite challenging task. In this paper, we propose a single-landmark-based relative localization algorithm, combined with a distributed coverage control law. At the same time, the optimal multi-UAV placement problem was formulated as a quadratic programming problem by compromising between optimal relative localization and optimal coverage control and was solved by using Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithms. Simulation results show that our proposed method can guarantee that a team of UAVs can efficiently localize themselves in a cooperative manner and, at the same time, complete the area coverage task.

    Description: Recently, formation flying of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) found numerous applications in various areas such as surveillance, industrial automation and disaster management. The accuracy and reliability for performing group tasks by multiple UAVs is highly dependent on the applied control strategy. The formation and trajectories of multiple UAVs are governed by two separate controllers, namely formation and trajectory tracking controllers respectively. In presence of environmental effects, disturbances due to wind and parametric uncertainties, the controller design process is a challenging task. This article proposes a robust adaptive formation and trajectory tacking control of multiple quad-rotor UAVs using super twisting sliding mode control method. In the proposed design, Lyapunov function-based adaptive disturbance estimators are used to compensate for the effects of external disturbances and parametric uncertainties. The stability of the proposed controllers is guaranteed using Lyapunov theorems. Two variants of the control schemes, namely fixed gain super twisting SMC (STSMC) and adaptive super twisting SMC (ASTSMC) are tested using numerical simulations performed in MATLAB/Simulink. From the results presented, it is verified that in presence of disturbances, the proposed ASTSMC controller exhibits enhanced robustness as compared to the fixed gain STSMC.

    Description: As emission legislation becomes more stringent, the modelling of turbulent lean premixed combustion is becoming an essential tool for designing efficient and environmentally friendly combustion systems. However, to predict emissions, reliable predictive models are required. Among the promising methods capable of predicting pollutant emissions with a long chemical time scale, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), is conditional moment closure (CMC). However, the practical application of this method to turbulent premixed flames depends on the precision of the conditional scalar dissipation rate,ζ ⟨Nc|ζ⟩, model. In this study, an alternative closure for this term is implemented in the RANS-CMC method. The method is validated against the velocity, temperature, and gas composition measurements of lean premixed flames close to blow-off, within the limit of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) capability. Acceptable agreement is achieved between the predicted and measured values near the burner, with an average error of 15%. The model reproduces the flame characteristics; some discrepancies are found within the recirculation region due to significant turbulence intensity.

    Description: Extracting financial events from numerous financial announcements is very important for investors to make right decisions. However, it is still challenging that event arguments always scatter in multiple sentences in a financial announcement, while most existing event extraction models only work in sentence-level scenarios. To address this problem, this paper proposes a relation-aware Transformer-based Document-level Joint Event Extraction model (TDJEE), which encodes relations between words into the context and leverages modified Transformer to capture document-level information to fill event arguments. Meanwhile, the absence of labeled data in financial domain could lead models be unstable in extraction results, which is known as the cold start problem. Furthermore, a Fonduer-based knowledge base combined with the distant supervision method is proposed to simplify the event labeling and provide high quality labeled training corpus for model training and evaluating. Experimental results on real-world Chinese financial announcement show that, compared with other models, TDJEE achieves competitive results and can effectively extract event arguments across multiple sentences.

    Description: This paper presents a 10-bit 0.909-MHz 8-channel dual-mode successive approximation (SAR) analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) for brushless direct current (BLDC) motor drive, using a Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) 0.25 μm 1P3M Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) process. The sample-and-hold (S/H) circuit operates with two sampling modes. One is individually sampling eight channels in sequence with an S/H circuit and the other is sampling four channels simultaneously with four S/H circuits. All sampled data will be digitized with high-speed SAR ADC in time division multiplexing (TDM). A dynamic latch-type comparator is utilized to latch the output at an upper or lower level. The advantage of the designed comparator is that it performs with positive feedback to quickly complete the latch function. The double-tail latch-type architecture is utilized to mitigate the significant kickback effect by separating the pre-amplifier stage from the latch. By integrating an input NMOSFET with an input PMOSFET, the designed latch-type comparator can perform with full-swing input voltage. Measurements show that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR), effective number of bits (ENOB), power consumption, and chip area are 50.56 dB, 57.03 dB, 8.11 bits, 833 μW, and 1.35 × 0.98 mm2, respectively. The main advantages of the proposed multichannel dual-mode SAR ADC are its low power consumption of 833 μW and high measured resolution of 8.11 bits.

    Description: In recent years, the number of services in mobile networks has increased exponentially. This increase has forced operators to change their network management processes to ensure an adequate Quality of Experience (QoE). A key component in QoE management is the availability of a precise QoE model for every service that reflects the impact of network performance variations on the end-user experience. In this work, an automatic method is presented for deriving Quality-of-Service (QoS) thresholds in analytical QoE models of several services from radio connection traces collected in an Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. Such QoS thresholds reflect the minimum connection performance below which a user gives up its connection. The proposed method relies on the fact that user experience influences the traffic volume requested by users. Method assessment is performed with real connection traces taken from live LTE networks. Results confirm that packet delay or user throughput are critical factors for user experience in the analyzed services.

    Description: Music and speech detection provides us valuable information regarding the nature of content in broadcast audio. It helps detect acoustic regions that contain speech, voice over music, only music, or silence. In recent years, there have been developments in machine learning algorithms to accomplish this task. However, broadcast audio is generally well-mixed and copyrighted, which makes it challenging to share across research groups. In this study, we address the challenges encountered in automatically synthesising data that resembles a radio broadcast. Firstly, we compare state-of-the-art neural network architectures such as CNN, GRU, LSTM, TCN, and CRNN. Later, we investigate how audio ducking of background music impacts the precision and recall of the machine learning algorithm. Thirdly, we examine how the quantity of synthetic training data impacts the results. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of synthesised, real-world, and combined approaches for training models, to understand if the synthetic data presents any additional value. Amongst the network architectures, CRNN was the best performing network. Results also show that the minimum level of audio ducking preferred by the machine learning algorithm was similar to that of human listeners. After testing our model on in-house and public datasets, we observe that our proposed synthesis technique outperforms real-world data in some cases and serves as a promising alternative.

    Description: The use of digital systems in precision agriculture is becoming more and more attractive for farmers at every level. A few years ago, the use of these technologies was limited to large farms, due to the considerable income needed to amortize the large investment required. Although this technology has now become more affordable, there is a lack of scientific data directed to demonstrate how these systems are able to determine quantifiable advantages for farmers. Thus, the transition towards precision agriculture is still very slow. This issue is not just negatively affecting the agriculture economy, but it is also slowing down potential environmental benefits that may result from it. The starting point of precision agriculture can be considered as the introduction of satellite tractor guidance. For instance, with semi-automatic and automatic tractor guidance, farmers can profit from more accuracy and higher machine performance during several farm operations such as plowing, harrowing, sowing, and fertilising. The goal of this study is to compare semi-automatic guidance with manual guidance in wheat sowing, evaluating parameters such as machine performance, seed supply and operational costs of both the configurations.

    Description: Wireless devices such as smart meters, trackers, and sensors need connections at multiple frequency bands with low power consumption, thus requiring multiband and efficient antenna systems. At the same time, antennas should be small to easily fit in the scarce space existing in wireless devices. Small, multiband, and efficient operation is addressed here with non-resonant antenna elements, featuring volumes less than 90 mm3 for operating at 698–960 MHz as well as some bands in a higher frequency range of 1710–2690 MHz. These antenna elements are called antenna boosters, since they excite currents on the ground plane of the wireless device and do not rely on shaping complex geometric shapes to obtain multiband behavior, but rather the design of a multiband matching network. This design approach results in a simpler, easier, and faster method than creating a new antenna for every device. Since multiband operation is achieved through a matching network, frequency bands can be configured and optimized with a reconfigurable matching network. Two kinds of reconfigurable multiband architectures with antenna boosters are presented. The first one includes a digitally tunable capacitor, and the second one includes radiofrequency switches. The results show that antenna boosters with reconfigurable architectures feature multiband behavior with very small sizes, compared with other prior-art techniques.

    Description: This paper presents a variable-gain amplifier (VGA) in the 68–78 GHz range. To reduce DC power consumption, the drain voltage was set to 0.5 V with competitive performance in the gain and the noise figure. High-Q shunt capacitors were employed at the gate terminal of the core transistors to move input matching points for easy matching with a compact transformer. The four stages amplifier fabricated in 40-nm bulk complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) showed a peak gain of 24.5 dB at 71.3 GHz and 3‑dB bandwidth of more than 10 GHz in 68–78 GHz range with approximately 4.8-mW power consumption per stage. Gate-bias control of the second stage in which feedback capacitances were neutralized with cross-coupled capacitors allowed us to vary the gain by around 21 dB in the operating frequency band. The noise figure was estimated to be better than 5.9 dB in the operating frequency band from the full electromagnetic (EM) simulation.

    Description: This article presents a low power digital controlled oscillator (DCO) with an ultra low power duty cycle correction (DCC) scheme. The DCO with the complementary cross-coupled topology uses the controllable tail resistor to improve the tail current efficiency. A robust duty cycle correction (DCC) scheme is introduced to replace self-biased inverters to save power further. The proposed DCO is implemented in a Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) 40 nm CMOS process. The measured phase noise at room temperature is −115 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset with a dissipation of 210 μμW at an oscillating frequency of 2.12 GHz, and the resulin figure-of-merit is s −189 dBc/Hz.

    Description: Automatic music transcription (AMT) is a critical problem in the field of music information retrieval (MIR). When AMT is faced with deep neural networks, the variety of timbres of different instruments can be an issue that has not been studied in depth yet. The goal of this work is to address AMT transcription by analyzing how timbre affect monophonic transcription in a first approach based on the CREPE neural network and then to improve the results by performing polyphonic music transcription with different timbres with a second approach based on the Deep Salience model that performs polyphonic transcription based on the Constant-Q Transform. The results of the first method show that the timbre and envelope of the onsets have a high impact on the AMT results and the second method shows that the developed model is less dependent on the strength of the onsets than other state-of-the-art models that deal with AMT on piano sounds such as Google Magenta Onset and Frames (OaF). Our polyphonic transcription model for non-piano instruments outperforms the state-of-the-art model, such as for bass instruments, which has an F-score of 0.9516 versus 0.7102. In our latest experiment we also show how adding an onset detector to our model can outperform the results given in this work.

    Description: To realize the high-performance load torque tracking of an electric dynamic load simulator system with random measurement noises and strong position disturbances, a PD-type iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm with adaptive learning gains is proposed in this paper. With the principle of system analyzing, a nonlinear discrete state-space model is established. The adaptive learning gains is used to suppress the effects of periodic disturbances and random measurement noises on the load torque tracking performance. A traditional PD feedback controller in parallel with the proposed ILC is designed to stabilize the system and render the ILC converge quickly. The convergence analysis of the proposed control method ensures the stability of the system. Compared with the fixed learning gains, the experiment results show that the proposed control method has better load torque tracking performance and can effectively suppress the adverse effects of periodic and aperiodic disturbances on tracking accuracy.

    Description: Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) is an important 3D mapping method. Traditional TomoSAR requires a large number of observation orbits however, it is hard to meet the requirement of massive orbits. While on the one hand, this is due to funding constraints, on the other hand, because the target scene is changing over time and each observation orbit consumes lots of time, the number of orbits can be fewer as required within a narrow time window. When the number of observation orbits is insufficient, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), peak-to-sidelobe ratio (PSR), and resolution of 3D reconstruction results will decline severely, which seriously limits the practical application of TomoSAR. In order to solve this problem, we propose to use a deep learning network to improve the resolution and SNR of 3D reconstruction results under the condition of very few observation orbits by learning the prior distribution of targets. We use all available orbits to reconstruct a high resolution target, while only very few (around 3) orbits to reconstruct a low resolution input. The low-res and high-res 3D voxel-grid pairs are used to train a 3D super-resolution (SR) CNN (convolutional neural network) model, just like ordinary 2D image SR tasks. Experiments on the Civilian Vehicle Radar dataset show that the proposed deep learning algorithm can effectively improve the reconstruction both in quality and in quantity. In addition, the model also shows good generalization performance for targets not shown in the training set.

    Description: In this paper, a transmission-guided lightweight neural network called TGL-Net is proposed for efficient image dehazing. Unlike most current dehazing methods that produce simulated transmission maps from depth data and haze-free images, in the proposed work, guided transmission maps are computed automatically using a filter-refined dark-channel-prior (F-DCP) method from real-world hazy images as a regularizer, which facilitates network training not only on synthetic data, but also on natural images. A double-error loss function that combines the errors of a transmission map with the errors of a dehazed image is used to guide network training. The method provides a feasible solution for introducing priors obtained from traditional non-learning-based image processing techniques as a guide for training deep neural networks. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that, in terms of several reference and non-reference evaluation criteria for real-world images, the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art performance with a much smaller network size and with significant improvements in efficiency resulting from the training guidance.

    Description: In this study, a strain gauge sensor based on a change of contact or network structure between conductive materials was implemented using the handle-machine embroidery technique, and the variables (embroidery shape, embroidery distance, embroidery size, and implementation location) affecting its performance were studied. As a result of Experiment I on the structure of embroidery suitable for joint motion monitoring, the embroidery distance, rather than the embroidery size, was found to have a significant effect on the electric resistance changes caused by elongation. Based on the results of Experiment I, two types of zigzag embroideries, four types of embroideries with few contact points, and two types of embroideries with more contact points (all with short distances (2.0)) were selected for Experiment II (the dummy motion experiment). As a result of the dummy motion experiment, it was found that the locations of the suitable embroidered sensors for joint motion monitoring was the HJP (Hinge Joint Position) in the ‘types without a contact point’ (zigzag) and the LHJP (Lower Hinge Joint Position) in the ‘types with more contact points’. On the other hand, although there was no consistency among the ‘types with few contact points’, the resistance changes measured by the 2CP and 7CP embroidered sensors showed similar figures and patterns, and the HJP location was most suitable. The resistance changes measured by the 4CP and 6CP embroidered sensors exhibited no consistent patterns, but the LHJP locations were more suitable. These results indicate that the location of the HJP is suitable for measuring joint motion in the ‘type without a contact point’, and the location of the LHJP is suitable for measuring joint motion when the number of contact points exceeds a certain limit. Among them, the average resistance change of the 9CP sensor located at the LHJP was 40 Ω with the smallest standard deviation of less than 1, and it is thus considered to have the best performance among all the sensors.

    Description: The Alternating Current-Direct Current (AC-DC) hybrid distribution network has received attention in recent years. Due to advancement in technologies such as the integration of renewable energy resources of DC–type output and usage of DC loads in the distribution network, the modern distribution system can meet the increasing energy demand with improved efficiency. In this paper, a new AC-DC hybrid distribution network architecture is analyzed that considers distributed energy resources (DER) in the network. A network reconfiguration scheme is proposed that uses the AC soft open point (AC-SOP) and the DC soft open point (DC-SOP) along with an SOP selection algorithm for minimizing the network power losses. Subsequently, the real-time data for DER and load/demand variation are considered for a day-a-head scenario for the verification of the effectiveness of the network reconfiguration scheme. The results show that the proposed network reconfiguration scheme using AC-SOP and DC-SOP can successfully minimize the network power losses by modifying the network configuration. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in minimizing the network power losses by the upgraded network configuration is verified by constructing an AC-DC hybrid distribution network by combining two IEEE 33-bus distribution networks.

    Description: In electric power systems, any deviation with respect to the theoretical sinusoidal waveform is considered to be a disturbance in the power quality of the electrical grid. The deviation can alter any of the parameters of the waveform: frequency, amplitude, and symmetry among phases. Microgrid, as a part of the electric power system, has to contribute providing an adequate current waveform in grid connected-mode, as well as to guarantee similar voltage features than the standard requirement given for public distribution grids under normal exploitation conditions in islanded mode. Adequate power quality supply is necessary for the correct compatibility between all the devices connected to the same grid. In this paper, the power quality of microgrids is managed using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodology which regulates the power converters of the microgrids in order to achieve the requirements. The control algorithm is developed for the following microgrids working modes: grid-connected, islanded, and interconnected. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methodology improves the transient response in comparison with classical methods in all the working modes, minimizing the harmonic content in the current and the voltage even with the presence of non-balanced and non-harmonic-free three-phase voltage and current systems.

    Description: This report describes the design of a new piezoelectric transducer for round window (RW)-driven middle ear implants. The transducer consists of a piezoelectric element, gold-coated copper bellows, silicone elastomer (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS), metal cylinder (tungsten), and titanium housing. The piezoelectric element is fixed to the titanium housing and mechanical resonance is generated by the interaction of the bellows, PDMS, and tungsten cylinder. The dimensions of PDMS and the tungsten cylinder with output characteristics suitable for compensation of sensorineural hearing loss were derived by mechanical vibrational analysis (equivalent mechanical model and finite element analysis (FEA)). Based on the results of FEA, the RW piezoelectric transducer was implemented, and bench tests were performed under no-load conditions to confirm the output characteristics. The transducer generates an average displacement of 219.6 nm in the flat band (0.1–1 kHz); the resonance frequency is 2.3 kHz. To evaluate the output characteristics, the response was compared to that of an earlier transducer. When driven by the same voltage (6 Vp), the flat band displacement averaged 30 nm larger than that of the other transducer, and no anti-resonance was noted. Therefore, we expect that the new transducer can serve as an output device for hearing aids, and that it will improve speech recognition and treat high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss more effectively.

    Description: New technologies for management, monitoring, and control of spatio-temporal crop variability in precision viticulture scenarios are numerous. Remote sensing relies on sensors able to provide useful data for the improvement of management efficiency and the optimization of inputs. unmanned aerial systems (UASs) are the newest and most versatile tools, characterized by high precision and accuracy, flexibility, and low operating costs. The work aims at providing a complete overview of the application of UASs in precision viticulture, focusing on the different application purposes, the applied equipment, the potential of technologies combined with UASs for identifying vineyards’ variability. The review discusses the potential of UASs in viticulture by distinguishing five areas of application: rows segmentation and crop features detection techniques; vineyard variability monitoring; estimation of row area and volume; disease detection; vigor and prescription maps creation. Technological innovation and low purchase costs make UASs the core tools for decision support in the customary use by winegrowers. The ability of the systems to respond to the current demands for the acquisition of digital technologies in agricultural fields makes UASs a candidate to play an increasingly important role in future scenarios of viticulture application.

    Description: A simple, nearfield transformation meta-structure is proposed to increase the directivity of resonant cavity antennas (RCA). The meta-structure is comprised of 14 × 14 meta-atoms or so called “unit-cells”, adding localized phase delays in the aperture of the RCA and thus increasing its broadside directivity. A prototype of the meta-structure is additively manufactured using the stereolithograpy process and has a profile of 0.56λ. With the meta-structure integrated with the RCA, it demonstrates a measured broadside directivity of 20.15 dBi without affecting its half-power directivity bandwidth. Benefiting from additive manufacturing, the proposed approach is a simple, light-weight, low-cost, and planar approach that can be tailored to achieve medium-to-high gains with RCAs.

    Description: In the case of level 3 automated vehicles, in order to safely and quickly transfer control authority rights to manual driving, it is necessary that a study be conducted on the characteristics of human factors affecting the transition of manual driving. In this study, we conducted three experiments to compare the characteristics of human factors that influence the driver’s quality of response when re-engaging and stabilizing manual driving. The three experiments were conducted sequentially by dividing them into a normal driving situation, an obstacle occurrence situation in front, and an obstacle and congestion on surrounding roads. We performed a statistical analysis and classification and regression tree (CART) analysis using experimental data. We found that as the number of trials increased, there was a learning effect that shortened re-engagement times and increased the proportion of drivers with good response times. We found that the stabilization time increased as the experiment progressed, as obstacles appeared in front and traffic density increased in the surrounding lanes. The results of the analysis are useful for vehicle developers designing safer human–machine interfaces and for governments developing guidelines for automated driving systems.

    Description: Postural instability owing to poor proprioception is considered a main cause of low back pain and falls. However, the effect of local vibratory stimulation on a poor proprioceptor on proprioceptive control strategy has yet to be evaluated. Therefore, in this study, we proposed an evaluation method of the immediate effect on proprioceptive control strategies by applying local vibratory stimulation to the poor proprioceptor. First, using our device, we determined the poor proprioceptors in each of six elderly patients with non-specific low back pain. Furthermore, we applied local vibratory stimulation to the poor proprioceptor. Finally, we compared the proprioceptive control strategy before and after applying local vibratory stimulation. As a result, the proprioceptive control strategy improved for three patients with impaired muscle spindles that responded to a higher frequency (p 〈 0.05). Thus, the impaired proprioceptive control strategy caused by a decline in the muscle spindle responding to a higher frequency might be improved by local vibratory stimulation. Furthermore, it was shown that our developed device and protocol might be used to evaluate proprioceptive control strategies within multiple frequency ranges, as well as activate a poor proprioceptor based on diagnosis and improve the proprioceptive control strategies.

    Description: Maglev transportation system is become a hot topic for researchers because of the distinctive advantages, such as frictionless motion, low power consumption, less noise, and being environmentally friendly. The maglev transportation system’s performance gets sufficiently influenced by the control method and the magnetic levitation system’s dynamic performance, which is a critical component of the maglev transportation system. The Magnetic Levitation System (MLS) is a group of unstable, nonlinear, uncertain, and electromagnetically coupled practical application. Control objective of this study is to design a position stabilizing control strategy for Magnetic Levitation system under extreme uncertain parametric conditions using a reference model governed by a reference stabilizer and nonlinear adaptive control structure. After successful tuning the reference stabilizer with and without time-varying payload disturbance, the tracking-error dynamics are obtained in the presence of both matched and mismatched types of parametric uncertainties. Next, the close-loop stability theorem is formulated for Lyapunov stability analysis to get the design constraints, parameter update laws, and adaptive control law. Numerical simulations performed for a high range of parametric violations check the control design’s efficacy. The performance robustness gets confirmed by comparing the results with the nonlinear control approach. The MLS gets performance recovery and settles within safe limits in few seconds using the proposed methodology. However, the nonlinear controller faces permanent failure in stabilizing the MLS.

    Description: New smartphones made by small companies enter the technology market everyday. These new devices introduce new challenges for mobile forensic investigators as these devices end up becoming pertinent evidence during an investigation. One such device is the PinePhone from Pine Microsystems (Pine64). These new devices are sometimes also shipped with OSes that are developed by open source communities and are otherwise never seen by investigators. Ubuntu Touch is one of these OSes and is currently being developed for deployment on the PinePhone. There is little research behind both the device and OS on what methodology an investigator should follow to reliably and accurately extract data. This results in potentially flawed methodologies being used before any testing can occur and contributes to the backlog of devices that need to be processed. Therefore, in this paper, the first forensic analysis of the PinePhone device with Ubuntu Touch OS is performed using Autopsy, an open source tool, to establish a framework that can be used to examine and analyze devices running the Ubuntu Touch OS. The findings include analysis of artifacts that could impact user privacy and data security, organization structure of file storage, app storage, OS, etc. Moreover, locations within the device that stores call logs, SMS messages, images, and videos are reported. Interesting findings include forensic artifacts, which could be useful to investigators in understanding user activity and attribution. This research will provide a roadmap to the digital forensic investigators to efficiently and effectively conduct their investigations where they have Ubuntu Touch OS and/or PinePhone as the evidence source.

    Description: A theoretical study of the influence of word line and common source electrodes on the program operation in shrank SuperFlash memory is proposed. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the literature model defined for previous nodes is not always suitable, due to the continuous cell physical size reduction and to the consequent increment of capacitive coupling between the floating gate and adjacent electrodes. To get a deeper insight, an analytical model of the electric field in the region of source side injection is proposed. This model describes the impact of the cell physical and electrical parameters on the vertical and horizontal field components and highlights the strong dependence of the carrier injection on the technology node. Furthermore, the numerical and analytical models estimate the influence of the word line and common source electrodes on the time-to-program, the floating gate potential and the source side injection efficiency, taking into consideration, at the same time, their possible impact on the cell reliability.

    Description: Renewable energy systems have been extensively developed and they are attractive to become widespread in the future because they can deliver energy at a competitive price and generally do not cause environmental pollution. However, stand-alone energy systems may not be practical for satisfying the electric load demands, especially in places having unsteady wind speeds with high unpredictability. Hybrid energy systems seem to be a more economically feasible alternative to satisfy the energy demands of several isolated clients worldwide. The combination of these systems makes it possible to guarantee the power stability, efficiency, and reliability. The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive analysis and to propose a technical solution to integrate a self-excited induction generator in a low power multisource system. Therefore, to avoid the voltage collapsing and the machine demagnetization, the various parameters have to be identified. This procedure allows for the limitation of a safe operating area where the best stability of the machine can be obtained. Hence, the load variation interval is determined. An improvement of the induction generator stability will be analyzed. Simulation results will be validated through experimental tests.

    Description: Soil contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is intensifying under increasing industrialization. Thus, the ability to efficiently delineate contaminated sites is crucial. Visible–near infrared (vis–NIR: 350–2500 nm) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF: 0.02–41.08 keV) spectroscopic techniques have attracted tremendous attention for the assessment of PTEs. Recently, the application of fused vis–NIR and XRF spectroscopy, which is based on the complementary effect of data fusion, is also increasing. Moreover, different data manipulation methods, including feature selection approaches, affect the prediction performance. This study investigated the feasibility of using single and fused vis–NIR and XRF spectra while exploring feature selection algorithms for the assessment of key soil PTEs. The soil samples were collected from one of the most heavily polluted areas of the Czech Republic and scanned using laboratory vis–NIR and XRF spectrometers. Univariate filter (UF) and genetic algorithm (GA) were used to select the bands of greater importance for the PTE prediction. Support vector machine (SVM) was then used to train the models using the full-range and feature-selected spectra of single sensors and their fusion. It was found that XRF spectra alone (primarily GA-selected) performed better than single vis–NIR and fused spectral data for predictions of PTEs. Moreover, the prediction models that were derived from the fused data set (particularly the GA-selected) enhanced the models’ accuracies as compared with the single vis–NIR spectra. In general, the results suggest that the GA-selected spectra obtained from the single XRF spectrometer (for As and Pb) and from the fusion of vis–NIR and XRF (for Pb) are promising for accurate quantitative estimation detection of the mentioned PTEs.
