Abstract:
Summary The free oscillations of the lake of Garda (Italy) have been the subject of researches byA. Defant andF. Vercelli since 1908. The differences of the results of the two investigators have been considerable, especially as regards the binodal seiches, to whichDefant attributed a value of 29 min. andVercelli one of 23 min., both values based on records. Lateron,Defant, by a method of his own, came to the same result asVercelli. It is shown in this paper that the original mistake is not to be ascribed to the method ofChrystal, asDefant presumed, but was due to a wrong coefficient in the first wording ofChrystal's formulae. The results of an exhaustive investigation of the free oscillations of the lake of Garda as a whole for a new determination of its characteristic elements are given. In addition, the oscillations of the partial basins of the lake are investigated. The oscillation of 29 min. which starts from the basin of Riva and extends to the greatest depth, is of particular interest, whereas the analogous oscillation, recorded at Peschiera, can be observed in the southern part of the lake between Peschiera and the line Sirmione-Lazise. From the analysis of the records the typical properties of the oscillations of open basins can be recognized. Apart from records at Desenzano, Salò, Riva, and Peschiera, the results have been tested also by experiments with a model of the lake of Garda.
Notes:
Successivamente,A.
