Beschreibung: The Finnish novelist Kaarlo (Kalle) Alvar Päätalo’s (1919–2000) main work, the Iijoki series, consists of 26 novels (comprising ca. 17 000 pages) and was written in 1971–1998. In this book the text corpus in Kielipankki concerning Päätalo’s works is introduced to the readers, as well as the possibilities of digital text mining. This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. Beschreibung: Matti Kurikka (1863–1915) is a multi-dimensional and controversial character in Finnish history. He was a playwright, a journalist, a socialist, and a theosophist, as well as a speaker for sexual emancipation and women's rights. Kurikka was born in Ingria, and his activities spanned not only Finland, but also Australia and North America, in both of which he led utopian communities. This biographical study explores Kurikka as a literary and political figure and a builder of utopias, whose life opens fascinating views on the societal and cultural currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book critically re-evaluates earlier research on Kurikka and highlights forgotten phases of his life by using new source materials found in three continents. The sources include digitized newspapers and periodicals, Kurikka's plays and non-fictional books, oral history, and political cartoons.

Beschreibung: A city forms the core of all political and philosophical projects. On one hand, a city is a place of human aspirations and pursuits; on the other, it represents a space of tension and anxiety. This dual and often paradoxical character of the city compels philosophers to constantly cogitate its current status. Philosophy is often defined as the child of the city (polis); it is thus the product of urban life. As a medium of social space and political unity, the city has become a stipulation for philosophical activity. In this sense, philosophy is not deprived of its conditions; alternatively, it is an activity that reveals itself within its prerequisite environment. The book reveals varied philosophical reflections on the city, focusing primarily on the urban crisis and debates on rights to the city. The book also attends to the city-philosophy connection in terms of language, borders, art, architecture, and meta-philosophy. The body of research on the city cannot be reduced to the sum of discourses of technical experts. Beyond this boundary, the city stands in its entirety at the heart of debates on equality, freedom, and liberation, surpassing all types of pragmatic discussion. Max Weber cites the proverb, “Stadtluft macht frei” (the urban air frees), serving as a reminder that a city is also a place of domination and freedom. In this respect, the city is the arena of all types of conflict.

Prof., Istanbul University Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy, Istanbul, Turkey M. Ertan KARDEŞ Assoc. Prof., Istanbul University Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy, Istanbul, Turkey almaktadır. “Kent” üzerine bir araştırma sadece teknik uzmanların söylemlerinin toplamına indirgenemez, bunun ötesinde, bütün pragmatik söylem tiplerini aşarak, eşitlik, özgürlük ve kurtuluş tartışmalarının bağrında bütünselliğiyle kent durmaktadır. Max Weber tarafından alıntılanan bir atasözü, “Stadtluft macht frei” (kent havası özgür kılar) bize aynı zamanda kentin tahakküm ve özgürlük yeri olduğunu hatırlatmaktadır. Bu açıdan kent her türlü mücadelenin alanıdır.

Beschreibung: Understanding civilized society encompasses the understanding of cities given that the urban environment, which is a natural reflection of settled life, shapes the civilization of a society. Moreover, cities enriched with the effects of trading functions as centers of modernization. At present, cities are exposed to the influence of different dynamics, which are a result of modern life. This influence plays an important role in the shaping of city life and identity. This study, which is entitled Cities in History with Respect to Humans and Spaces, highlights the transformation of cities throughout history and aims to examine the histories of important cities from the social, cultural, political, and economic perspectives. The study emerges as a result of a meticulous evaluation of original scientific writings in urban history and aims to contribute to research in this field. First, the paper presents an examination of the effect of football on urban identity followed by discussions on the tales of cities penned by Ottoman geographers, the transformation of cities previously dominated by wooden buildings and the impact of fires, the identity of cities under the influence of ideologies, the role of squares in the identification of cities, the role of foundations in shaping city identity, and the effects of asitane, dargah, and khanqah structures in the formation of the social identity of cities.

Beschreibung: Sofi Oksanen is the most visible and widely discussed Finnish author of the 21st century, yet her novels have gained less attention than her public performances. This study shifts the focus from the author’s persona to her literary art, proposing to read Oksanen’s fiction from the methodological viewpoint of the rhetorical theory of narrative. Accordingly, Oksanen’s six novels published to date – Stalinin lehmät, Baby Jane, Puhdistus, Kun kyyhkyset katosivat, Norma, and Koirapuisto – are considered as examples of authorial rhetoric and ethics, as narrative and textual constructions, and as affective readerly experiences. Instead of only following the rhetorical theory’s emphasis on character, plot, and progression, however, the study develops a new kind of narrative rhetoric, which also pays attention to language and politics. In the study, Sofi Oksanen emerges as a feminist narrative artist, who employs fiction as a serious rhetorical resource in order to say something worthwhile about the past history as well as the contemporary world.

Beschreibung: This study explores the narration of existential feelings, or feelings of being in the world, in post-war Finnish prose fiction. The book presents five case studies which address modern individuals’ struggles in boundary situations of their lives. Rigorous readings of the works of Kerttu-Kaarina Suosalmi, Lassi Nummi, Marko Tapio, Tyyne Saastamoinen and Eeva-Liisa Manner all show the influence of French existentialism and its predecessors on post-war Finnish modernism for the first time in literary studies. The outsider figures and their experiences of the absurd, which have enticed the cultural imagination since ancient cults and the Book of Job, connect to the atmosphere of shared melancholy in post-war Finnish culture and society. The study participates in the rich contemporary debates on the effects of literature by focusing on less-discussed aspects of bodily feeling, affect, emotion and mood in late Finnish modernism. The book’s methodological contribution to narrative theory is that it combines a phenomenological analysis of reading with a rhetorical theory of narrative and politically informed, multidisciplinary emotion studies. The five case studies show how modernist outsider prose fiction in Finland resorts to irony, metafiction, allegory and the imaginative to generate ethically challenging narrative tension and an ambivalence of negative and positive emotion in readers. The opposing impulses of the aesthetic response produce an openness of interpretation. This openness provides us with the possibility of a more complex cultural understanding of emotion and ethics in the lives of strangers within literature and outside it.

Beschreibung: "Gendered and sexualized abuse and other forms of violence are visibly present in the culture of the third millennium. Especially bodies that are gendered as female are – both dead and alive – objects of multiple forms of abuse and violence in the texts and imageries of contemporary culture. Men, on the other hand, are often represented as abusive towards women and as the violent gender or, as targets of other men’s violence. Structural violence has also an impact on many areas of everyday life, and it is materialized in, for example discrimination and inequality. Gender and Violence: The Ethics and Politics of Reading scrutinizes gendered violence as a complex phenomenon of contemporary culture. The authors study the ways in which ways representations of violence can be read, viewed and received. They also discuss what kind of politics the violent representations implement and actualize, and how they affect their audience. Gender and Violence takes a critical stance on the intersections of gender, power, and violence in literature, film, television and the internet. The analysis focuses on, for example, sci-fi, Nordic Noir and North American comedy series, poems, young adult literature (YA) and nationalist blog texts. The book presents both Finnish and international academic discussions, in which researchers in the fields of gender studies, arts and literature, and cultural studies challenge contemporary English abstract 279 understanding of gender, sexuality, power, and violence. Moreover, Gender and Violence provides tools for critical discussions on violence and in-depth scrutiny about its cost on all of us. Gender and Violence is an anthology of academic research articles. It works well as an academic textbook, but it also provides timely and new knowledge for everyone interested in questions of gender and violence – phenomena that touch upon all of us."

Beschreibung: Mawlawiyah, which has a history of nearly eight centuries, was institutionalised as a sufi school and has had widespread effects, in addition to pioneering the formation of one of the most influential sources in Turkish culture, art, and literature. When compared to other sufi schools, the most striking feature of Mawlawiyah is that it allocates a central place to art and literature within its institutional culture. Therefore, from the thirteenth century to the present day, the number of poets who were followers of the Mawlawiyah or Mawlawi culture in Turkish literature is more than three hundred. In addition to historical figures such as Sheikh Ghalib, who are directly identified with Mawlawiyah, the reflections of this cultural accumulation also appear in the writing experiences of authors who are not directly affiliated with Mawlawi culture, such as Halide Edib Adıvar and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, due to their interest in the culture. In recent years, parallel to the increasing interest in Mawlana, Mawlawiyah, and Sheikh Ghalib around the world as the culture industry put mysticism on its agenda , new dimensions have been added to the subject. Some of the studies in this book, which are composed within the framework of these new dimensions, focus on the classical period and Mawlana’s personality, works, life, new research on Mawlawiyah, and well-known written sources on these issues. In the studies dealing with the modern period, the images of Mawlana and Mawlawiyah are analysed in different fields, from poetry to novels and socioeconomic dimensions of mysticism today. In this context, Mevlüt İlhan and Ermiş Dandan, in their article titled “Osman Fevzi Olcay’s Muhtasar Menâkıb-ı Mevlânâ”, present information about Muhtasar Menâkıb-ı Mevlânâ of Osman Fevzi Olcay, who has produced many historical works, and then include the text of his work. Özlem Düzlü, in “Mawlawis in Keçecizâde Izzet Molla’s Writings”, evaluates a stanza that was devoted to the members of the Mawlawiyah by Izzet Molla, who has added a couplet about Mawlana or Mawlawiyah at the end of almost every ghazal in his diwan called Bahâr-ı Efkâr and wrote many poems about Mawlana, Mawlawi elders, and Mawlawiyah. Pointing out that in the poem, which consists of eighteen couplets with the redif “Mawlawi”, the positive characteristics of the Mawlawis are generally mentioned, Düzlü also observes that İzzet Molla further emphasises the existence of people who could be the target of criticism from within or outside the sect due to their negative behaviours. Focusing on the history of literature in their article “Dr. Rıza Nur’s Studies on Jalâl al-Dîn Muhammed Rûmî, Sultan Veled, and Sheikh Ghalib’s Poems”, Yasemin Karakuş and Ömer Arslan draw attention to the revealing of Rıza Nur’s Evolution of Turkish Poetry History and Its Analytical Study, which has not been known until today, within the framework of the content of Nur’s work, then discuss how Mawlana, Sultan Veled, and Sheikh Ghalib’s poems and literary personalities were examined by Dr. Rıza Nur. In one of the two studies dealing with Mawlawiyah and Mawlana in modern Turkish poetry, Ahmet Murat Özel finds that a strong representation does not occur in modern literature, despite the founding role of Mawlana and Mawlawiyah in classical literature. Özel, who attributes this to the lack of attention paid to tradition by modern poets, evaluates the representation of Mawlana and Mawlawiyah in modern Turkish poetry as an “emotional fidelity but a poetic farewell”. Sevim Güldürmez, on the other hand, concentrates on the works of many different authors in her article, which deals with the various forms of appearance of Mawlana in modern Turkish poetry. Güldürmez, claiming that each poet constructs their own Mawlana image, analyses the existence of Mawlana in modern Turkish poetry from a different framework apart from the fact of establishing a relationship with tradition. In parallel with Güldürmez, Derya Güllük also examines the variations in the aspects of Mawlana and Mawlawiyah in Turkish novels. According to Güllük’s article, the representation of Mawlana as a historical figure and the Mawlawi culture created by his followers over the centuries in Turkish novels differs in line with the personal selectivity of the novelists and their issues, and fiction writers construct their own Mawlana image. Muhammet Salman and Resul Kırmızıdemir focus on İhsan Oktay Anar’s novel Suskunlar. Salman and Kırmızıdemir offer an alternative reading suggestion for this novel through the way Mawlawiyah is perceived within the journey of the novel character Eflâtun representing mystical self-fulfilment, by a deconstructive approach to the understanding of the truth is distorted in a postmodern situation; however, they point out that this deconstruction has also the potential to help reach the truth, not nihilism. The position of Mawlawi whirling ceremonies, one of the first symbols that come to mind when Mawlawiyah is mentioned in today’s socioeconomic practices of mysticism, is among the issues discussed in the book. Seda Aksüt points out the danger posed to the whirling ceremonies by decontextualization, which is one of the risk factors that threatens the authenticity of this cultural heritage, and makes suggestions for building an effective awareness of conservation.

Güldürmez, her şairin kendi Mevlana’sını inşa ettiğini ileri sürerek, Mevlana’nın modern Türk şiiri içerisindeki varlığını gelenekle ilişki kurma olgusunun dışında farklı bir çerçeveden hareketle tahlil etmektedir.

Beschreibung: This volume titled “The City: Literary Encounters” aims to examine the relationship of the city with language and literature from different perspectives and to present examples of related literary works to the readers. In this book, besides the works that directly focus on cities, there are also wide-ranging scientific studies that address the use of the image of the city in literature. The fact that literature focuses on the image of the city has often turned cities into protagonists of a novel or a poem. Considering the importance of cities in the art of literature, it is not possible to think independently Crime and Punishment from St. Petersburg, A Mind at Peace from Istanbul, and The Miserables from Paris. Although the experience of the city that people have lived in the last centuries has been the subject of every art and discipline, it has become one of the subjects mostly studied by literature. The works in this volume also show that literature has transformed into a language environment which enable cities that literature deals with as a subject to speak, in other words, the language of the city. In this book, which focuses on language studies as well as literary ones, the world’s different cities and cultures are examined through the image and the language diversity of the city. This work, based on both literary and philological contexts, deals with different experiences in the world with various examples and aims to analyze the language of the city. In this book, which is the product of a collective effort, qualified discussions are carried out on subjects such as how the city is described and read in different geographies, different literary traditions, and different literary discourses, and how the city directs the literary production.

Beschreibung: Alex Matson (1888–1972) is an important Finnish literary critic and essayist, whose literary reviews and collections of essays have made a vital contribution to the development of Finland's postwar literary generation. Born in Finland as the son of a sailor, Matson moved as a young child with his family to Hull in England, where he went to school. In the 1910s, he moved back to Finland, where he at first established himself as painter associated with the expressionist November Group, an important Finnish artistic movement at the time. In the interbellum, he moved from fine arts to literature. In the 1920s and 1930s, he published several novels, but more important was his work as transmitter of international literary ideas to Finland. Together with his first wife, Kersti Bergroth, he edited the literary journal Sininen kirja (""The Blue Book""; 1927–1930), which was inspired by the writings of John Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield. Sininen kirja is the most international literary journal in Finnish history to date and introduced Finland to the most significant modernist writers of the first half of the 20th century (Gottfried Benn, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Döblin, T. S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Paul Valéry, Virginia Woolf). During the Second World War, Matson worked for the State Communications Agency, which was responsible for disseminating relevant information about Finland to other nations and for informing Finns of relevant developments abroad. It was also tasked with studying the prevailing mood among the population in Finland. In Matson's unpublished wartime diaries, one can see the first symptoms of a shift in Finnish culture away from Germany and towards Anglo-Saxon culture. From the 1940s onwards, Matson recommended new English and American novels as a part of his work as reader for Finnish publishing houses, and he also translated works by Joyce, Hemingway and Steinbeck. With the help of a network of international literary critics, Matson became acquainted with New Criticism, which he introduced to Finland before it became established among academic researchers. He was often critical of academic literary studies, but his seminal essay works Romaanitaide (""On the Prose Novel""; 1947), John Steinbeck (1948), Kaksi mestaria (""Two Masters"", on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky; 1950) as well as his impressive conversational skills were instrumental in introducing knowledge about the principles of the prose novel to several authors (including Väinö Linna, Lauri Viita, and Hannu Salama), and contributed to their views of literature. Matson emphasized the importance of reading and understanding high-quality literature for the wellbeing of society.

Beschreibung: This is the first study to examine Finnish trauma fiction in detail. The book discusses the novels of Katja Kettu, Sofi Oksanen, Elina Hirvonen and Emmi Itäranta, where historical and collective traumas meet stories of personal vulnerability. Traumatic Memory in Contemporary Prose Fiction addresses war traumas and marks left by terrorism, colonialism, domestic violence and sexual violence, and analyses the aspects of ecological trauma and future threats. The study combines the latest discussions on cultural memory studies and trauma theory with critical perspectives offered by feminist criticism and research in transnationalism. It illustrates how cultural narratives, literary conventions and aesthetic strategies regulate and produce traumatic experiences. Traumatic memory is not only a phenomenon dealing with the past, but it involves a wide range of individual, cultural, ecological, political and economic dimensions.

Beschreibung: The volume Remembered and Imagined Soviet Union addresses memories, conceptions, and images relating to the Soviet past from the perspective of cultural memory. The book explores how the Soviet Union has been recalled and how it has been depicted in cultural products like literature, museum exhibitions, art and the media. Instead of trying to say what the Soviet Union was, the book analyses the ways in which Finns, Russians and Estonians have viewed the Soviet past at different times. The book answers the following questions: What is remembered about the Soviet past? How has the country been represented in various cultural texts? What is forgotten or not talked about? The book consists of chapters by scholars of history, literature and art studies. They look at key themes of the Soviet past in the framework of cultural memory, with topics including space conquest, the superiority of the hockey team, known as the "Red machine", political propaganda, and persecution of minorities.
