Description: The use of weighing instruments and the handling of concepts of counting and measuring by Late Prehistory societies have been the subject of few systematic studies in archaeology. This book, resulting from a doctoral thesis, offers a diachronic analysis of weights and balance elements discovered in Western Europe and dated between the 14th and 3rd centuries BC. One of the aims of this work is to reexamine the place occupied by the practice of weighing in protohistoric societies on a large scale, in the diachrony, by means of a uniform protocol and by integrating the contextual data brought by archaeology. Contrary to the general idea, the results of this study paint a picture of practices that are most often poorly embedded within the societies studied and that rarely reach a large-scale metrological homogenisation that would allow for a fluidity of quantitative information during exchanges (weight units used, counting systems employed, permitted measurement intervals, frequency of multiples and fractions of systems). The archaeological remains of the practice of weighing thus lead us to believe that it remained infrequent in Late Prehistory Western Europe and that its evolution between the Late Bronze Age and the 3rd century B.C. is marked by a complex and non-linear relationship of innovations, persistence, transformations of local origin or linked to foreign influences, but also probably of regressions and abandons.

Description: This book is the result of interdisciplinary exchanges and brings together 16 international researchers to examine the links between territorial boundaries and the organization of societies. Following a comparative approach, the authors question, from the beginnings of modern states in the 14th century to today, the effects induced by the evolutions of these delimitations from two observation fields adjacent to each other: the territories between Burgundy and Franche-Comté where all boundaries seem to disappear; those between France and Switzerland where one of the last borders between France and a State that is not a member of the European Union is established. This comparison makes possible to determine what distinguishes a state border from territorial delimitations of other kinds.

Description: What does it mean to work in the retail sector today? In Switzerland, two giants share almost the whole market. In order to stay competitive, they intensify the work, demand more availability from their employees and deskill certain positions. How do the store managers achieve profitability objectives despite the constraints in this context? How do the cashiers cope with the increasing automation of their jobs? How do the shelf workers reconcile customer contact with ever-increasing time constraints? This book explains how neoliberal working time patterns are taking place in the supermarkets and questions the evolution of the working day in our society. The study is based on 78 interviews with managers, shop floor workers and union officers. Nicola Cianferoni is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Geneva and the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

Description: In the last few decades, the organization of religious education classes in Swiss public school has been the object of profound public scrutiny. In the wake of these debates, most cantons have introduced a new course under the responsibility of the State in which a plurality of religions is presented. The attribution of this new competence to the State has prompted the reaction of various religious communities and has stimulated, within these communities, a reflection on their social role. Drawing on forty in-depth interviews with representatives of different religious communities, this study analyzes the strategies used by religious actors to position themselves in the public sphere. Against this backdrop, the study discusses the evolution of the relationships between religious communities and society and puts forward new perspectives in the sociological debate on the public presence of religion.

Description: The Swiss vocational education and training model is at the heart of an unprecedented enthusiasm. Both in Switzerland and abroad, it is praised for its management based on a public-private partnership, for its ability to integrate a large number of young people in beyond mandatory education and, finally, for the quality of the training provided which is in line with the labour market needs. However, these assets may hide the high complexity of this model and the challenges it currently faces and will face in the future. Gathering thirteen chapters from specialists, this book offers a close look at the Swiss vocational education and training model. It provides the factual information and the theoretical tools necessary to understand its complexity and identify its major challenges.
