Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion phenomena in electrolytic condensers, and their causesA breakdown and failure of an electrolytic condenser with aluminium electrodes is mainly attributable to corrosion phenomena. These are initiated by the presence of certain cations and anions which may already be present in the raw materials, or may have entered the condenser during the manufacturing process. Compared with aluminium corrosion under normal conditions, the corrosion effect is increased by the prevailing potentials. Moreover, the formation of the 'filter layer' formed by the dielectric in the electrolytic condenser is liable to be disturbed by the slightest impurities in the electrolyte. These phenomena can be avoided by using tantalum anodes and a solid electrolyte.

Description / Table of Contents: On the causes and progress of aggression due to the attack of corrosive waters on cement mortar and concrete (Second Communication)This Second Communication contains a report about the comparative evaluation and interpretation of long-time tests with concrete made with Portland cement and blast furnace cement, and about analytical investigations after storage in corrosive media. These investigations have proved the decisive importance of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the Portland cement and of the setting and hardening processes in the mortar bed. In view of the agreement between the results obtained on the strength of different bases, the knowledge gained from these investigations can be regarded as a contribution, of general validity, to the clarification of the causes and processes of the aggression of corrosive waters on cement mortar and concrete. As a result, it is possible to draw certain fundamental conclusions which have a bearing on cement theory and concrete technology.

Description / Table of Contents: The adhesion of surface layers to metalsThe relations between adhesion and surface forces are discussed. In the ideal case, the adhesion values of surface layers can be calculated from these relations. In practice, however, a number of discrepancies must be taken into account. They are due, in particular, to the crystal structure, to grating defects, and to the plasticity of the solids. Other discrepancies encountered are related to the manner in which the surface layer has been produced, or to the bonding between layer and base. The subject is discussed with the aid of measurements of the adhesion of scale layers to iron alloys.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion protection in steel constructionWelded assemblies consisting of thinwalled steel components call for particularly effective protective measures. Passivation is the best means of preventing corrosion-promoting local currents. In a corrosion-promoting local currents. In a corrosive atmosphere, red lead shows better results than primers containing chromate. According to German Standards DIN 4115, a single coat of red lead primer can only be regarded as adequate on structural parts having a minimum thickness of 3 mm. The finishing coats should be applied as soon as possible after the application of the primer. In the finishing coat, white lead and hematite are complementary to each other. In the opinion of the german Federal Railways, a preparation of the steel parts in the workshop is to be preferred to site preparation.

Description / Table of Contents: The electrolytic deposition of iron-chromium-nickel alloysIron-chromium-nickel alloys of a composition corresponding to 18/8 chromium nickel steel can be deposited from the aqueous solutions of the sulphates of the three metals in the presence of urea and boric acid. By means of an appropriate choice of the concentrations of the components of the bath, of the pH value and of the temperature, it is possible to bring the deposit potentials of the three individual metals as well as of the alloy to virtually the same value of EH = -0.68 V. The composition of the alloy is influenced by changes in the concentration of the bath constitutents, this influence being greatest for iron, less great for nickel, and smallest for chromium.Current yield and composition of the alloy are governed by a diaphragm forming on the cathode surface and consisting of chromium hydroxide. The three metals impede each other considerably in the deposition of the alloy.

Description / Table of Contents: Specific quantitative determination of nitriteNitrite is not stale in diluted aqueous solutions. If nitrite is used, e.g. as a corrosion inhibitor, it is therefore necessary to watch the concentration volumetrically. In the presence of oxidizable substances, the normal unspecific oxydimetric methods cannot be used, and can easily lead to errors. In contrast, the reaction between nitrite and aminosulphoric acid (sulphamic acid) is specific, and is quantitatively determined in an acid solution. The analytical method is described.
Verwendet man z.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion problems of canning materials for nuclear fuel elementsThe author deals with the more important corrosion phenomena liable to occur between canning materials and coolants of nuclear reactors. With reactors cooled by water or heavy water, aluminium and zirconium are today the most important materials. By means of alloying measures, it has been possible to obtain a great improvement in the corrosion behaviour of these two metals. In the case of water-cooled reactors working with enriched uranium, stainless steels are best suited. In metallic coolants, zirconium and stainless steels have a high resistance, provided that suitable precautions are taken. In organic coolants, serious corrosion problems are hardly encountered, through the hydrogen arising from the decomposition of these substances precludes the use of zirconium. The problems encountered with gas-cooled reactors are variegated. CO2, now the most commonly used cooling gas, causes scale formation on most of the metallic canning materials at temperatures above approx. 500° C. Satisfactory practical experience has been gathered, in particular, with magnesium alloys at temperatures up to approx. 450° C. with beryllium, it should even be possible to attain temperatures which are about 150° C higher.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on structure and other properties of hard oxide layers produced upon aluminium by anodic oxidationAfter a short survey of the formation mechanism of oxide layers growing upon aluminium during anodic oxidation the report presents experimental results obtained in investigating the growth of hard oxide layers in dilute sulfuric acid. Particular reference is made to the initial period of anodization and to changes in surface roughness measured during surface refining. Additional data cover results of thickness measurements on barrier layers and total layers, as well as oxide structure and chemical composition of the oxide layers. According to these findings the formation mechanisms, the structure and the chemical composition of layers produced by hard-anodizing exhibit the same regularities and basic structure as normal eloxal-layers.

Description / Table of Contents: The salt spray testAs a general corrosion test method, the salt spray test must be rejected as it is difficult to reproduce and does not always yield qualitatively correct results. For instance, the good performance of cadmium coatings experienced with the salt spray test does not correspond to a good corrosion resistance in industrial air.The existing standards are surveyed, and 22 independent variables are discussed which govern the results of the tests.Today, the salt spray test is only regarded as suitable for determining coarse flaws in coatings, and for comparing the performance of materials which are not too different from each other, e.g. surface-treated aluminium alloys.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion tests with nickel-plated sheets of killed and rimmed steelWith a number of different types of steel plates (killed and rimmed steel, Thomas steel, Siemens Martin steel, square steel), research has been carried out on the influence of the base metal on the effectiveness of the corrosion protection afforded by the galvanic nickel plating. With plates of the different types of steel subjected to the same finishing treatment, neither the short-time ferroxyle test nor the salt spray test nor storage under moist conditions revealed any noticeable differences in the corrosion resistance of the nickel plating. Minor differences between different types of plates, as they are sometimes observed with out door corrosion, were not noticeable with the short-time test. The investigations lead to the conclusion that, contrary to widespread opinion, killed steel can be nickel-plated with the same corrosion protection effect as rimmed steel.

Description / Table of Contents: Conditions for the cathodic corrosion protection of metalsAfter a discussion of the part played by cathodic corrosion protection within the whole sphere of corrosion protection, the thermo-dynamic and kinetic conditions required for this method ar investigated. In this connection, some diagrams are reproduced from an “Atlas of electrochemical equilibria” at present under preparation, and which show, for 43 metals and metalloids, at which values of electrode potentials and pH one must expect corrosion, passivity, or immunity. Some of these cases are discussed in detail, including the influence of solid or gaseous hydrides which may arise in the process. It is also shown, on the strength of some examples, in which way polarisation curves can be used in developing cathodic protection systems for normal and stainless steels. In this connection, special attention is drawn to the dangerous effects of a badly planned cathodic protection system. In conclusion, the effectiveness, reliability and future potentialities of this protection method are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Distribution of potential and current with cathodic corrosion protectionThe distribution of the potential and of the current in local cells and with cathodic corrosion protection can be calculated from the differential equation for the electric field in an electrolyte solution. The relevant limit conditions are formulated in a general way. In the case of sacrificial anodes and external current, solutions for simple limit conditions are put forward, and the general conclusions are discussed. Where it is necessary to protect major objects, it appears desirable to use external current which is automatically regulated in such a way that the local electrode potential, measured by a probe at the most exposed point, is equal to the potential of a just about negligible metal dissolution, but not much more negative, so that cathodic hydrogen development is minimized, especially at points situated next to the anode.

Description / Table of Contents: The behaviour of malleable cast iron under the influence of corrosionWhite and black malleable cast iron is examined in regard to its behaviour in the presence of different inorganic and organic agents. The tests are designed for long-term laboratory observations and, in particular, for the determination of the corrosion behaviour under conditions which, as closely as possible, resemble those encountered in practice, Reactions to wet steam, combustion gases, etc. are discussed. The influence of pre-corrosion, e.g. caused by sulphuric acid, on tensile strength and strain is measured. In this connection, it has been possible to detect important relationships at the untreated and at the finished material. Particularly impressive is the relationship between fatigue impact strength and pre-corrosion, By way of comparison, measurements have also been carried out on grey cast iron, cast steel and steel. Finally, the influence of copper (up to about 3 per cent.) in different types of water is examined by a long-term test.

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of organic matter on the deposit rate and gloss of nickel coatings generated without currentAn investigation has been carried out into the effect of some organic compounds on the deposit rate and gloss of nickel coatings in the bath working without current. In this connection, both positive and negative catalytic effects are encountered. Most substances increase the gloss, and maxima occur in many cases. These maxima do not occur at the same concentration values as the maxima of the deposit weights. The best gloss was obtained by p-toluole sulphonamide which corresponds to a completely smooth nickel surface. The surface structure of the nickel coatings is governed by the interaction of different factors. Whilst the organic brightening agents generally, rather like inhibitors, reduce the metal deposit in proportion to the concentration of the compounds, the optimum gloss is encountered before the metal surface is completely covered with the brightener film, i.e. as long as a certain porosity still exists. Only when the diaphragm permits a constant rate of seed crystal formatin both parallel and perpendicular to the metal surface, does one obtain homogeneous lowcrystalline nickel crystals which are prerequisite to the formation of glossy metal deposits.

Description / Table of Contents: The passivity of silver-copper alloys in sodium cyanide solutionsThe passivity phenomena were investigated with two further Ag-Cu alloys 50/50 and 20/80 in different sodium cyanide solutions, with the aid of current density/potential curves. In this connection, the characteristic constants of the Müller-Machu relation, N and n, as well as the free pore surface of the different layers formed during passivation were determined. The passivation process always takes place in three stages. The composition of the different layers and their reaction mechanism are discussed in some detail.

Description / Table of Contents: Nitric acid corrosion on highly alloyed steelsCorrosion tests in nitric acid up to 67 per cent. and at temperatures up to atmospheric boiling point have been carried out with steels of high chromium contents (25 to 30 per cent.) containing up to 1.64 per cent. carbon and, in some cases, also 20 per cent. nickel. The results were plotted in the form of iso-corrosion diagrams which can be used to predict the corrosion resistance was shown by a steel containing 0.1 per cent. C, 30 per cent. Cr, and 20 per cent. Ni. Even after heat treatment at 680° C, this steel does not show any intercrystalline corrosion when exposed to 50 and 67 per cent. nitric acid at boiling temperature. The results of these tests and the values for chromium steels discussed in the first part of the article were plotted, for HNO3 concentrations ranging from 30 to 67 per cent., at boiling temperature, to show the degree of corrosion on a logarithmic scale, as a function of the C and Cr contents on a decimal scale. The curves thus plotted were straight lines, i.e. the influence of carbon as well as chromium can be expressed by parabolas, rising with the concentration in the case of carbon, and falling with the concentration in the case of chromium. In the latter case, the part bonded with the carbon, which roughly corresponds to carbide (Cr3C) and amounts to 13 times the C content, must be deducted from the total chromium content. The high No content of 20 per cent. has no noticeable influence on the degree of corrosion. From a corrosion-chemical point of view, it is therefore immaterial whether the structure is of the ferrite or austenite type. The essential constituent is the free Cr content, the effect of which is governed by a parabolic law, and not by the previously much discussed n/8 Mol law.In plotting the effect of the carbon, one obtains three parabols which apply to the Cr contents of 13, 17 und 25 per cent., respectively. Below 0.1 per cent. C, the corrosion resistance is, in the main, exclusively governed by the Cr content.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion protection in steel ConstructionRegular inspection of protective coatings is indispensable. Special attention should be paid to the particularly dangerous subsurface corrosion. If this has progressed considerably, it becomes necessary to carry out complete de-rusting. The first primer should exclusively consist of adhesive coatings. Disperse and highly concentrated red lead are equally adhesive. Where the weather is liable to change rapidly, special fast-drying varnishes are preferable. Phthalate resin binders are able to form ‘lead soaps’. Fast-dying primers can received the finishing coats earlier. It is only in the finishing coats that the chemical activity of white lead is sufficiently utilized. In connection with suitable binders, red lead primers are also suited for steel structures in water.

Description / Table of Contents: Minimum contents of alloying constituents required for the formation of oxide layers with high protective effect against oxidation at higher temperaturesFor the formation of an uninterrupted protective oxide layer of an alloying metal such as Al or Be in Cu or Fe, the concentration must be at least so high that the quantity of alloying metal reaching the surface through diffusion is sufficient to provide for the formation of the oxide concerned. Results of tests concerning the oxidation of Cu-Be alloys have shown that this condition. Though necessary, is not sufficient. Even with higher concentrations of the alloying metal, both the latter and the base metal can be oxidized simultaneously if the base metal oxide contains mobile oxygen ions, or if there is, between a compact oxide layer of the base metal and the initial alloy, a porous zone composed of the oxides of both metals, with migration of oxygen molecules in pores. In the same way, it is possible to interpret the results of tests carried out by other authors concerning the oxidation of Cu-Zn and Cu-Ni alloys and the sulphidization of Cu-Al, Cu-Zn and Ag-Zn alloys

Description / Table of Contents: Improving the corrosion resistanceCopper and ist alloys are notorious for their excellent resistance in aqueous and gaseous media. Admittedly, however, there are no materials based on copper which can, in the strict sense, be regarded as capable of passivation. The corrosion resistance of this group of materials is, in fact, the result of the electropositive normal potential of copper, and of the existence, on the metal surface, of dense covering layers difficult to dissolve. But the applicability even of materials containing copper is impaired by corrosion phenomena such as flaking and selective and intercystalline corrosion. The examples of internal and external oxidation, of the dezincking of brass, and of stress corrosion are used to demonstrate how these specific forms of corrosion can be countered by the addition even of small quantities of a further alloying component.
