    Description / Table of Contents: Acid-Resisting Steels in the Production of Wood-VinegarThe chemical wear of steel by the production of wood-vinegar is bigger than that by the production of vinegar of fermentation. It is caused by the content of homologous acids and empyreumatic substances.A steel alloyed with Cr 18%, Ni 10% and Mo 2% failed at places of biggest wear though generally used for this acetic acid. Improvement was attempted by steels of higher Cr and Ni contents. The best results were achieved by a steel alloyed with 27% of Cr, 4,5% of Ni and 1,5% of Mo which has been employed in the Swedish cellulose-industry. According to laboratory-experiments this steel is completely resistant over the whole range of concentration and temperature up to the boiling point. It consists of very little austenit and displays greater temper. Nevertheless it can be welded and worked up easily.
    Notes: Die chemische Beanspruchung in der Holzessigindustrie ist größer als die in der Gärungsfabrikation, was durch Gehalte an homologen Säuren und empyrheumatischen Stoffen bedingt ist.Ein Stahl mit 18% Cr, 10% Ni und 2% Mo, der im allgemeinen für diese Essigsäure Verwendung findet, versagte an den Stellen stärkster Beanspruchung in Holzessigsäure. Es wurde daher versucht, durch Erhöhung des Cr- und Ni-Gehaltes eine Verbesserung zu erzielen.Die besten Ergebnisse wurden mit einem bereits in der schwedischen Zellulosefabrikation verwendeten Stahl mit 27% Cr, 4,5% Ni und 1,5% Mo erreicht, der nach den Laboratoriumsversuchen im gesamten Konzentrations-Temperaturbereich bis zum Siedepunkt voll beständig ist.Dieser Stahl besteht nur zum geringen Teil aus Austenit und weist daher eine größere Härte auf. Trotzdem ist er gut verarbeitbar und läßt sich auch befriedigend schweißen.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Mechanism of the Corrosion of Iron in SoilsThe corrosion of iron in soils is explained in dependence of the „water-air-contents-ratio“ of the soil. The current producing galvanic cell, Pt/soil + water/Fe, proves an active or passive behavior according to the water-saturation-value of the soil.The rate of corrosion of iron depends on the pH-value of the soil if the corrosion of the iron takes place under excess of oxygen. Laboratory experiments with soft steel specimens show that the corrosion of iron in unsaturated soils is a reaction first order. In watersaturated soils it follows the law of diffusion.
    Notes: Die Korrosion des Eisens im Erdreich wird in Abhängigkeit von dem Verhältniswert „Wasser zu Bodenluft“ erklärt. In dem stromliefernden Element: Pt/Boden + Wasser/Fe, zeigt Fe je nach dem Sättigungszustand des Bodens an Wasser ein aktives oder passives Verhalten. Die Korrosionsgeschwindigkeit des Eisens ist vom pH-Wert des Bodens abhängig, wenn die Korrosion an der Eisenoberfläche bei Sauerstoffüberschuß stattfindet.  -  Laborversuche mit Weichstahl-Versuchsproben ergaben, daß die Korrosion des Eisens in einem an Wasser ungesättigten Boden als eine Reaktion 1. Ordnung, in einem mit Wasser gesättigten Boden dagegen nach dem Diffusionsgesetz abläuft.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Use of Electric Extensometer Strips in the Testing of MaterialsAs the electric measurement of extension by means of extensometer strips, being a modern as well as convenient method, has proved and become well known to be successfully applicable to all branches of engineering for the investigation of special conditions of wear it was attempted to show the use of this method in solving special problems of material research. Numerous examples prove convincingly that the above described method can be applied profitably even to special problems of the static material testing. The realm of use of the well known little Hartmann und Braun (Frankfurt) extensometer bridge “Pontavi” has been enlarged by a lately developed supplementary apparatus for selective connection of several extensometer strips.
    Notes: Nachdem hinreichend bekannt und unter Beweis gestellt ist daß die „elektrische Dehnungsmessung“ mit Dehnungsmeßstreifen, die ein ebenso modernes wie elegantes Meßverfahren darstellt, auf allen Gebieten der Technik erfolgreich zur Klärung besonderer Beanspruchungsverhältnisse eingesetzt werden kann, wurde versucht, die Nutzanwendung diese Verfahrens bei der Lösung werkstoffkundlicher Sonderaufgaben aufzuzeigen. An zahlreichen Anwendungsbeispielen wird überzeugend gezeigt, daß das eingangs beschriebene Verfahren auch auf den Gebieten der statischen Werkstoffprüfung zur Lösung spezieller Aufgaben nutzbringend Anwendung finden kann. Der Anwendungsbereich der bekannten kleinen Dehnungsmeßbrücke Pontavi der Fa. Hartmann & Braun, Frankfurt wurde durch ein neu entwickeltes Zusatzgerät zum wahlweisen Anschluß mehrerer Dehnungsmeßstreifen in glücklicher Weise erweitert.

    Description / Table of Contents: Cathodic ProtectionThe most important field of application of the cathodic protection is the protection of buried pipe lines. Good protection will be achieved if the potential of the pipe against its surrounding material is -0,85 V  -  measured by means of a Cu/CuSO4 electrode. Soils of low specific resistance of about 1000 ω/cm are very aggressive while those of more than 10 000 ω/cm are fairly incorrosive. The arrangement of graphite anodes with extern sources of electricity and of Mg- or Zn anodes is discussed. The pipes should be insulated with impregnated strips as under these conditions only low current densities are necessary to achieve a good protection.
    Notes: Das wichtigste Anwendungsgebiet des kathodischen Korrosionsschutzes ist der Schutz von Rohrleitungen im Erdboden. Ein guter Schutz wird erreicht, wenn das Potential des Rohres gegenüber der Umgebung  -  gemessen mit Cu/CuSO4-Elektrode  -  einen Wert von -0,85 V erreicht. Böden mit geringem Widerstand von etwa 1000 ω/cm greifen stark an, bei mehr als 10 000 ω/cm ist kein Angriff zu befürchten. Die Anordnung von Graphitanoden mit äußeren Stromquellen und von Mg- oder Zn-Anoden (Opferanoden) wird besprochen. Außerdem sollte stets für eine gute Isolierung der Rohre mit imprägnierten Streifen gesorgt werden, da dann nur geringe Ströme zum Schutz erforderlich sind.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Behavior of Plastics upon Mineral OilsThe behavior of plastics upon mineral oils is of special importance as they are gaining increasing application as building and constructing materials. The behavior depends essentially on the nature of the macromolecular plastic and the filling material as well as on the nature of the mineral oil, the duration of action and temperature. The resistance of many thermoplastic materials and rubber goods to oil is decreased considerably at higher contents of aromatic substances of the mineral oil.The behavior of the most important plastics upon oils of different composition is reported. Special importance has been given to the standardization of the experimental conditions.
    Notes: Angesichts der steigenden Verwendung von Kunststoffen als Bau- und Konstruktionsmaterial kommt ihrem Verhalten gegen Mineralöle besondere Bedeutung zu. Dieses Verhalten wird sowohl durch die Art des hochmolekularen Kunststoffes und verschiedene Füll- und Zusatzstoffe als auch durch die Natur des Mineralöles, die Einwirkungsdauer und Beanspruchungstemperatur wesentlich beeinflußt. So ist insbesondere festzustellen, daß höhere Aromatengehalte im Mineralöl die Ölbeständigkeit vieler thermoplastischer Kunststoffe und Gummiwerkstoffe beträchtlich herabsetzen.Es wird über das Verhalten der wichtigsten Kunststoffe gegenüber Ölen verschiedenere Zusammensetzung berichtet, wobei auf die genaue Festlegung der Versuchsbedingungen besonderer Wert gelegt wird.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Corrosion of Alloyed Steels and Nickel alloys by Phosphoric AcidPhosphoric acid gains a permanently increasing industrial importance. But the knowledge of its corrosive effects especially upon the industrially important normal stainless steels are very incomplete as proved by a short review of the concerned literature. Therefore investigations on the corrosion of high alloyed steels and modern nickel alloys (containing Mo) were carried out over the whole range of concentration and temperature up to the atmospheric boiling point. The obtained corrosion data are represented in chart form. The corrosion resistance regions are delineated by isocorrosion lines.At high temperatures and concentrations the corrosion by phosphoric acid is so vigorous that the nickel molybdenum alloy 70/30 only is considered to be practically unaffected. In the great range of concentration and temperature below 100 centigrades are great regions of excellent or even absolute resistance to corrosion for many materials. In the range above 100 centigrades some Mo and Cu containing Cr-Ni-Steels are fairly resistant up to considerable high temperatures.
    Notes: Die Phosphorsäure gewinnt technisch eine dauernd steigende Bedeutung, jedoch sind, wie eine kurze Literaturübersicht zeigt, die Kenntnisse über ihre korrodierende Wirkung besonders auf die technisch wichtigen normalen korrosionsbeständigen Stähle recht lückenhaft. Daher wurde mit den hoch legierten Stählen und den modernen Nickellegierungen (Mo-haltig) eine Korrosionsuntersuchung über das gesamte Temperatur-Konzentrationsgebiet bis zu den atmosphärischen Siedepunkten durchgeführt. Die Resultate wurden in Form von Korrosionsdiagrammen dargestellt, wobei die Beständigkeitsgebiete durch Isokorrosionslinien abgegrenzt werden.Die Korrosion durch Phosphorsäure ist bei hohen Temperaturen und Konzentrationen sehr stark, so daß schließlich nur noch die Ni-Mo-Legierungen 70/30 als praktisch vollkommen beständig anzusehen sind. In dem großen Temperatur-Konzentrationsgebiet unter 100°C sind jedoch bei vielen Werkstoffen große Gebiete vollkommener oder auch absoluter Korrosionsbeständigkeit vorhanden. In dem Gebiet über 100°C sind einige Mo- und Cu-haltige Cr-Ni-Stähle bis zu ziemlich hohen Temperaturen ausreichend beständig.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Sintered Metal Filters and their Structure and Properties and ApplicationThe porous sintered metal filters have been used in the USA for long and lately in Europe too are gaining increasing importance for chemical equipment. The structure of porous sintered metals and the influence of granulation of the used powder on the arrangement of the requested filtering channels are explained to show the possibilities of their application. The to-day available materials and their properties concerning their pressure drop and chemical resistance as well as their mechanical and physical properties are under discussion.Practical examples prove the possibilities of their use. Porous sintered metals can also be used for the diffusing of liquids and gases and seperators and the control of flow of gases and liquids and flash back arrestors.The examples quoted are intendeds to activate interest in the proper use of the improvement of existing equipment by application of porous sintered metals, increase of the industrial efficiency of working processes and of safety, and development of new techniques.
    Notes: Die schon seit längerer Zeit in den USA und neuerdings auch in Europa verwendeten Filter aus porösen Sintermetallen gewinnen steigende Bedeutung für das chemische Apparatewesen. Um die Möglichkeiten ihres Einsatzes zu veranschaulichen, wird der Aufbau poröser Sintermetalle und der Einfluß der kornform der verwendeten Pulver auf die Anordnung der erwünschten Filterkanäle erläutert. Die bis jetzt zur Verfügung stehenden Werkstoffe und ihre Eigenschaften werden hinsichtlich ihres Druckverlustes, der chemischen Beständigkeit, sowie der mechanischen und physikalischen Eigenschaften besprochen.Beispiele aus der Praxis Zeigen die Einsatzmöglichkeiten. Außer für Filter erstreckt sich der Einsatz poröser Sintermetalle auf die Gebiete „gleichmäßige Verteilung von Gasen und Flüssigkeiten“, „Separatoren“, „Mengenbegrenzer“ und „Flammensperren“.Die angeführten Beispiele sollen dazu anregen, die spezifischen Eigenschaften poröser Sintermetalle sinnvoll auszunutzen, z. B. vorhandene Konstruktionen durch Einsatz von porösen Sintermetallen zu verbessern, die Wirtschaftlichkeit von Arbeitsprozessen zu steigern, ihre Betriebssicherheit zu erhöhen oder sogar neue Wege in der Verfahrenstechnik zu erschließen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Development of Cylindrical Multilayered Hollow Bodies for High Internal Pressures and Their Special AdvantagesHollow steel bodies standing high internal pressures are required by different branches of industry for liquids, gases and vapors. The construction of hollow bodies to be used in the chemical industry must comply with extreme requirements concerning pressure, temperature, size, knowledge of the influences of aggressive chemical agents as well as an elastic operation of heating and cooling. The reviewed article surveys the development from the one part hollow bodies, produced e.g. in heavy forging machines, to the multiple part constructions especially the multilayered hollow bodies and their wrapping bodies which have gained an enormous importance. The problems of their stability and safety are solved. Multilayered constructions offer simple protection against corrosion by use of different materials for the in- and outside coatings.
    Notes: Stahl-Hohlkörper zur Aufnahme hoher Innendrücke werden in verschiedenen Industriezweigen für Flüssigkeiten, und Dämpfe benötigt. Bei den Hohlkörpern der Chemie sind Spitzenanforderungen zu erfüllen in bezug auf die Höhe der Drücke und Temperaturen und Größe der Körper, Beherrschung der Einwirkung von angreifenden chemischen Agenzien, sowie elastische Handhabung von Heizung und Kühlung. Der vorliegende Aufsatz schildert den Entwicklungsgang von einteiligen Hohlkörpern, die z. B. auf schweren Schmiedepressen hergestellt werden können, zur Mehrteilbauweise, insbesondere zu den aus mehreren Lagen geschichteten Hohlkörpern, wobei der Wickelkörper überragende Bedeutung gewann. Die Probleme der Festigkeit und Sicherheit werden vollkommen beherrscht; darüber hinaus bietet die Mehrschichtbauweise durch Wahl verschiedener Werkstoffe für Innenschicht und äußere Lagen eine einfache und wirtschaftliche Möglichkeit des Korrosionsschutzes.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Coefficient of Temperature and the Heat of Activation of the Corrosion-Reaction of Iron in SoilThe corrosion of soft iron in different soils can be described in dependance of the soil water to soil air ratio by means of the coefficients of temperature and the heats of activation of these corrosion reactions of the iron.The mean coeffizient of temperature in soils containing 20 per cent of water was about 1,92 and in water saturated soils it was about 1.7. The heats of activation of the corrosion of iron in water saturated soils (clay, loan, river sand, infusoria) amount to 9-10 kcal, in those containing 20 per cent of water 12-18 kcal.
    Notes: Es wird gezeigt, daß man die Korrosion von Weicheisen in verschiedenen Böden in Abhängigkeit vom „Bodenwasser-Boden-luft-Verhältniß an Hand der Temperatur-koeffizienten und Aktivierungsenergien der Korrosions-Reaktionen des Eisens verfolgen kann.Der mittlere Temperaturkoeffizient betrug in Böden mit einem Wassergehalt von 20% etwa 1,92 und in mit Wasser gesättigten Böden etwa, 1,7. Die AKtivierungsenergien der Eisenkorrosion in mit Wasser gesättigten Böden (Ton, Lehm, Flußsand, Infusoria) betrugen 9 bis 10 kcal und in solchen mit 20% Wasser 12 bis 18 kcal.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion Inhibitors in Petroleum Refinery ServiceChemical Inhibitors play a role of increasing importance in the prevention of corrosion in refinery service. After a brief discussion of the theory underlying the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors, the author reports considerations which must govern the choice of a particular additive for individual application. Progress in the field of anodic, cathodic, and organic inhibitors is reported. Among the former, chromates and nitrites are widely used, especially with waters of low oxygen content. The use of insufficient inhibitors is more harmful than no inhibitor at all, and minimum proper concentration must be carefully determined. Drawbacks of anodic inhibitors exist in hard waters and in the treatment of potable water. In such cases, the purpose is often better served by cathodic inhibitors (e. g. glassy phosphates and calcium bicarbonate). Organic inhibitors are relatively new and open up a vast and promising new field. Special interest attaches to the recent development of sodium benzoate and of organic amines in this service.
    Notes: Chemische Hemmstoffe (Inhibitoren) haben auf dem Gebiete der Korrosionsverhütung in der Erdölraffinerie steigende Bedeutung erlangt. Nach einer kurzen Erörterung der Theorie, die der Wirkung der Hemmstoffe zu Grunde liegt, berichtet der Verfasser über die Gesichtspunkte, die bei der Wahl eines Hemmstoffes im Einzelfalle zu berücksichtigen sind. Es werden die Fortschritte aufgezeigt, die auf dem Gebiete der anodischen kathodischen und organischen Hemmstoffe erzielt wurden. Als anodische Hemmstoffe kommen vorwiegend Chromate und Nitrite zur Anwendung, insbesondere bei Wasser von geringem Sauerstoffgehalt. Dabei ist zu beachten, daß die Anwendung von ungenügenden Mengen Hemmstoff schädlicher ist als überhaupt kein Hemmstoff, weshalb die anzuwendenden Mindestkonzentrationen sorgfältig zu ermitteln sind. Auch besitzen die anodischen Hemmstoffe Nachteile bei Behandlung von hartem Wasser und von Trinkwasser. In solchen Fällen sind kathodische Hemmstoffe, wie glasige Phosphate und Calciumbicarbonat, oft vorzuziehen. Organische Hemmstoffe sind verhältnismäßig neu und eröffnen ein vielseitiges und aussichtsreiches Anwendungsgebiet. Besonderes Interesse verdienen in dieser Hinsicht Natriumbenzoat und organische Amine.

Hard-polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene are used as materials for pipes at a large scale in the chemical industries as well as in fresh water supplying and draining. The working and installation of these piping materials and several methods of fitting are discussed and some new but approved techniques reported.

Vor allem Polyvinylchlorid-hart und Polyäthylen sind als Rohrwerkstoffe in großem Umfang in der chemischen Industrie, aber auch in der Frischwasserversorgung und für Wasserabfuhr eingesetzt.     Description / Table of Contents: Flame Sprayed Non Metal CoatingsThe article contains an extensively complete survey of the protection against corrosion and wear of metallic materials by flame sprayed non metal, especially plastic, coatings. In the first section various spraying devices are compared critically and the modern methods of spraying are discussed in detail. This is followed by a discourse about the customary kinds of plastics, - their advantages and disadvantages and the properties required of injection molded products.The preparation of the surface which requires special measures just like the spraying procedure itself is described in detail. Finally some examples taken from practice show where flame spraying of non metal coatings and protective covers has proved to be good or not good.
    Notes: Die Abhandlung gibt einen weitgehend vollständigen Überblick über den Korrosions- und Verschleißschutz metallischer Werkstoffe durch flammgespritzte nichtmetallische, insbesondere Kunststoff-Überzüge. Im ersten Teil werden die verschiedenen Spritzgerätekonstruktionen einander kritisch gegenübergestellt und die derzeitigen Spritzverfahren ausführlich behandelt. Sodann werden die nach dem gegenwärtigen Stande des Flammspritzens gebräuchlichen Kunststoffe unter Darlegung ihrer besonderen Vor- und Nachteile und die an den Spritzguß zu stellenden Anforderungen behandelt. Die Haftgrundvorbereitung, die ebenso wie der Spritzvorgang selbst spezielle Maßnahmen erfordert, werden im einzelnen ausführlich beschrieben. Abschließend zeigen Beispiele aus der Praxis in Wort und Bild, an welchen Stellen sich das Flammspritzen nichtmetallischer Überzüge und Schutzschichten bewährt oder nicht bewährt hat.

    Description / Table of Contents: Overvoltage Effects on Bimetallic ElectrodesAfter a determination of the hydrogen overvoltages, on mercury, zinc, lead, cadmium, nickel and platinised platinium in acetate buffer solutions the hydrogen overvoltages of bimetallic electrodes as zinc - copper, lead - copper and lead - platinised platinium were investigated under varying surface conditions. For the first and the second systems mentioned the overvoltages are different from those of the pure metals while lead almost assumes the potential of the platinised platinium.The alteration of overvoltages on bimetallic electrodes can be discerned quantitatively from the inhomogeneous current intensity distribution whereby it becomes evident that the metal of the lower overvoltage attracts more current density lines. Differences in potential between the centre and the boundary of the electrode metals as well as temporal effects might disturb the simple current intensity distribution expected.
    Notes: Die Wasserstoff-Überspannungen an Quecksilber, Zink, Blei, Cadmium, Nickel und platiniertem Platin in Acetat-Pufferlösungen wurden bestimmt. Dann wurden die Überspannungen des Wasserstoffs an bimetallischen Elektroden: Zink-Kupfer, Blei-Kupfer und Blei-platiniertes Platin mit verschiedenen Oberflächenverhältnissen untersucht. In den beiden erstgenannten Systemen sind die Überspannungen verschieden von denen der reinen Metalle, während das Blei fast das Potential des Platins annimmt.Die Änderungen der Überspannung in bimetallischen Elektroden lassen sich quantitativ durch die ungleichmäßige Stromstärkeverteilung erklären, wobei sich zeigt, daß das Metall mit der kleineren Überspannung mehr Stromlinien auf sich zieht. Potentialdifferenzen zwischen Zentrum und Begrenzung der Elektrodenmetalle sowie Zeiterscheinungen in der Potentialausbildung können die einfache, zu erwartende Stromstärkeverteilung stören.

    Description / Table of Contents: Studies on the Corrosion of IronThere are two different modifications of iron oxides. The first is ferromagnetic having p-structure while the second is paramagnetic and has a α-structure. The formation of p-iron rust takes place in moist air. α-iron rust is formed by aqueous solutions of strong oxidising reagents or by organic agents. The magnetic behavior of the iron oxides allows to reconstruct the conditions of their formation. The results of the magnetic test comply with those of the X-ray fine structure investigations.
    Notes: Eisenoxyde existieren in zwei verschiedenen Modifikationen, einer ferromagnetischen mit γ-Struktur und einer paramagnetischen mit α-Struktur. Zur Bildung von γ-Eisenrost kommt es in feuchter Luft, zu der von α-Eisenrost in Wasser mit starken Oxydationsmitteln oder in organischen Mitteln. Das magnetische Verhalten der Eisenoxyde läßt auf die Art der Rostbildung zurückschließen. Das Ergebnis der Magnetprüfung deckt sich mit dem von Röntgen-Feinstruktur-Untersuchungen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Oxidation of TitanumIt was attempted to explain the time equations which have been found by different authors. There is a significant connection between the time equations of the different ranges of temperature and times of oxidation. Below 300° C where oxidation follows a logarithmic time equation no solubility of oxygen in titanium during the oxidation could be observed. Above this temperature absorption of oxygen becomes noticeable. In this range of temperature a transition from the logarithmic over a cubic to a parabolic time equation is observed. Above 700° C after longer times of oxidation cracking of the tinder coat must be expected.
    Notes: Es wird der Versuch unternommen, die von den einzelnen Autoren gefundenen Zeitgesetze zu deuten. Die in den verschiedenen Temperaturbereichen und Oxydationszeiten beobachteten Zeitgesetze stehen in einem sinnvollen Zusammenhang. Unterhalb 300° C, wo das logarithmische Zeitgesetz der Oxydation herrscht, ist eine nennenswerte Sauerstofflöslichkeit im Titan während der Oxydation nicht zu beobachten. Erst oberhalb dieser Temperatur wird die Sauerstoffaufnahme durch Titan beachtlich. In diesem Temperaturbereich wird ein Übergang zunächst in das kubische und anschließend in das parabolische Zeitgesetz gefunden. Oberhalb 700° C ist ferner nach längeren Oxydationszeiten mit einem Aufreißen der Zunderschicht zu rechnen.
