Notes: As a part of a research project on the mass transfer in liquid pulsed sieve-tray extraction columns (PSE), the diameters and hold-ups of the drops were measured: the drop size using a suction technique, with photoelectric detection, which was adapted to the special boundary conditions of the PSE; the integral hold-up by the pressure difference between the lower and upper parts of the column. Since experimental results cannot be described by known calculation formulae for the Sauter mean diameter and the hold-up, a new method of calculation was developed. It is phenomenologically based on high-speed photographs of the drop motion on a sieve tray. The mathematical-physical model allows the prediction of drop size and hold-up within certain limits, while the possible different operating regimes of the PSE, i.e. the mixer-settler and dispersion regimes can also be estimated.

Notes: Distillation columns with vertical partitions can separate a feed mixture into 3 or 4 pure fractions. Compared to other column arrangements, their investment costs and energy consumption are lower. Production columns show good results and are easily controlled. Conventional distillation columns produce only 2 pure product streams at the top and at the bottom of the column. Side products are contaminated by light or heavy components, depending on the location of the side stream in the rectifying or stripping section. This disadvantage is set aside by using a distillation column with a vertical partition. The internal separation wall prevents lateral mixing of liquid and vapour in the central part of the column, forming there separate feed and outlet sections. In the presence of a vertical partition, 3 or 4 pure fractions can be obtained in a single distillation step. This is particularly advantageous when heat sensitive components are to be separated. On account of good thermodynamic properties, the energy consumption is 20 to 35% lower than that of other distillation arrangements. The control behaviour is similar or better than that of conventional distillation columns.

Notes: Fouling and/or scaling of heat transfer surfaces causes serious problems in industry. Prevention of fouling is therefore essential for technical (considerable deterioration of heat transfer) and also economic reasons (increased costs). In order to provide successful countermeasures, it is, however, necessary to obtain more detailed information on the physical, chemical and biological processes which produce fouling. Based on the already known fouling mechanisms, it is shown that a satisfactory prediction of fouling behaviour of heat exchangers is not yet possible. This contribution presents a physical model for the description of fouling, caused by sedimentation and crystallization. It is assumed that, during fouling, deposition and removal processes overlap. In order to verify the theoretical considerations, experiments were carried out on a test rig, which could also be used for field experiments. Aqueous CaSO4 solutions served as experimental liquids. A comparison of experimental and calculated fouling factors shows a satisfactory agreement.

Notes: A one-stage model of the formation of primary bubbles is presented in which the bubble volume is deduced from an equilibrium of buoyancy, viscosity, inertia and surface tension forces. In contrast to the two-stage model, presented by Kumar and Kuloor, it was not assumed that the drag coefficient in bubble expansion can be described by the same constants as in the steady-state bubble ascent. The constants were adapted in such a way that the introduction of an additional bubble volume was not necessary. It was demonstrated that this model describes the bubble formation in gravitational and centrifugal fields equally well and, furthermore, is also applicable to structurally viscous liquids, provided that the effective shear gradient \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \mathop {\rm \gamma }\limits^. = \frac{1}{6}({\rm \Delta \rho }gzd_{\rm B} /{\rm \eta }) $$\end{document} is calculated from the equilibrium of shearing and buoyancy forces. The model is based on the assumption of a constant volumetric flow rate during bubble formation and, for this reason, a minimum Froude number is necessary in analogy to the weeping limit for sieve plates. The normalized presentation permits simple operation. The possibility of applying the model to drop formation was confirmed by comparison of experimental values with those, predicted by the model.

Notes: A 0.5 MW spray-dry scrubbing FGD pilot plant was used in the study of spray dryer performance over a wide range of operating conditions. Experimental findings were compared with a spray dryer model. During operation with large excesses of lime, the SO2 absorption was limited by gas phase diffusion. At operation with a shortage of lime, the rate limiting step was the dissolution rate of lime. In addition, the flow regime in a spray dryer can be best described as well mixed. The SO2 level in the flue gas was found to exert no direct effect on the efficiency of SO2 removal. The observed effects are attributed solely to the changes in the drying process, due to the inter-dependence of slurry composition and SO2 concentration.

Notes: When crude oil is vacuum distilled, about 30% of the feed remain as low value residue. Hydrocracking can upgrade this residue into valuable light hydrocarbons. The hydrocracking could be optimized catalytically, if the residue were not to contain the metals vanadium and nickel that poison the catalyst. This contribution shows that continuous extraction of the residue with ethyl acetate yields a fraction with low metal content, while an asphaltene fraction with the remaining metal content is filtered off.

Notes: A new equipment for the measurement of virial coefficients of pure substances and binary mixtures is described. It consists of an improved modification of the set-up proposed by Eucken and Meyer in 1929. The development is based on a critical review of the existing methods particularly with respect to adsorption effects. In order to reduce the influence of adsorption on the accuracy of virial coefficients, an optimum range for gas density is recommended. The accuracy of the virial coefficients is better than 20 cm3 mol-1. The set-up was employed for the measurement of virial coefficients of acetone and hexane in the range from 352.95 to 393.85 K. The results are in excellent agreement with data published in literature. Furthermore, cross-virial coefficients of the binary system acetone/hexane were measured and interpreted.

Notes: The influence of electrolytes, which are dissolved in the aqueous absorbent and do not react with nitrogen oxides, on the absorption kinetics of both these components was investigated experimentally. In addition to demineralized water, various salt solutions of different concentrations as well as sodium hydroxide solution were used as absorbents. The term H \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ H\sqrt {k_1 D} $\end{document} for N2O4 and N2O3, which is important for the design of industrial absorbers, was determined as a function of composition and concentration of the absorbents. In the case of N2O4, the chosen measuring and evaluation methods permitted a separate determination of the rate constant k of the pseudo first order reaction and of the solubility H. The diffusion coefficient D of the gas in the absorbent can be obtained only by calculation. Experimental results showed that \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 4} } $\end{document} decreases with increasing ionic strength I, however, without a clear indication of any ion-specific effects. This decrease does not appear to be caused simply by a reduction in solubility (salting out effect), or in diffusion coefficient, but at least, to the same extent, through a decrease of the rate constant k with increasing electrolyte content in the absorbent. The measurements permitted the determination of the gas-based salting out parameter for N2O4. The investigations on the absorption of N2O3 in water and in an Na2SO4 solution showed no experimentally detectable influence of dissolved salts on \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 3} } $\end{document}. The numerical value of \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 3} } $\end{document} is six times that of \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 4} } $\end{document}.

Notes: The present contribution reports on a new method for the simulation of the dispersed phase behaviour in liquid-liquid extraction columns. The fluid dynamic description is based on a mathematical model which explicitly takes into account drop transport, break-up and coalescence mechanisms, via a drop population balance along the column. Application of the model requires some simple measurements on single drops in order to determine transport and break-up laws, which are required by the model, and possibly also coalescence parameters. In this study the model is applied to pulsed sieve plate columns. The specific example considered here is based on systematic studies on the determination of break-up rates from the corresponding probabilities of break-up and the generated daughter drop size distributions by means of high-speed photography. The validity of the model was subsequently tested by comparison with some experimental results from studies on two different pulsed columns 80 and 225 mm in diameter for the water/toluene system without mass transfer. The satisfactory agreement between the results justifies the use of such a method for the description of the behaviour of liquid-liquid extraction columns in a wide range of operating conditions. Furthermore, application of the model may help to dispense with long and expensive pilot tests.

Notes: Based on a paper by Hein, a dimensioning program for tube-bundle heat exchangers with straight tubes and fixed tube sheets has been developed. The equipment to be dimensioned is tested at 14 critical points, with regard to permissible stresses. The optimum thickness of the tube sheet, the shell and channel are subsequently selected on the basis of economic criteria. Compared to dimensioning according to AD-data sheet, it is possible to save between 10 and 25% of production costs. With the aid of a finite-element (FE) program, complex structures such as heat exchangers can be calculated accurately. Several mesh-generation programs were written for the data input. The structure of a tube-bundle heat exchanger with straight tubes is generated with 3/D elements with only some geometrical data. An FE-calculation of a heat exchanger is explained with the aid of an example and stress analysis is presented.

Notes: Pyrolysis of propane/argon mixture in the presence of trace quantities (0.1% and 0.9%) of ethane was investigated at reflected shock wave temperatures between 1200 and 2000K. Traces of ethane accelerated propane decomposition at high temperature. However, increase in the quantity of ethane added to propane/argon mixture did not result in the same increase of its accelerating influence. Ethylene, methane and acetylene were the main hydrocarbon reaction products, with small quantities of propylene and ethane detected only at lower temperatures. Below 1500K, addition of ethane slightly enhanced the yields of ethylene and methane at the expense of propylene and ethane respectively. The selectivity for acetylene increased with increasing temperature and with the decline of those for the other products. For none of the products, did the presence of ethane alter the relationship between product formation rates and temperature. The influence of ethane addition on propane pyrolysis at high temperatures was explained in terms of increased radical concentrations, especially hydrogen atoms and vinyl radicals, formed at high conversions. These accounted for the rapid acceleration of propane decomposition and the high yield of acetylene at high temperatures.

Notes: It is shown that the volumetric mass transfer coefficients, presented recently by Schmitz et al. [1] for viscous solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in aqueous sodium sulphite, are considerably underestimated as a result of unjustified neglect of the oxygen back pressure during oxygen absorption. Schmitz et. al. [1] found a decrease in the exponent n in the relationship between the oxygen mass transfer coefficient, kla, and the power dissipated per unit volume of the liquid phase, e (kla ∝ en), and ascribed it to viscosity effects. However, no such decrease is observed, provided that the actual oxygen back pressure is taken into account.

Notes: The aim of the present paper is the discussion of the relevance of power dissipation as a criterion for the understanding and prediction of transfer and mixing efficiencies in contactors and chemical reactors. After reviewing the approach of Le Goff to the energetic efficiency of exchangers, based on the deviations from Chilton-Colburn analogy, the following processes are studied: mass transfer between a flowing fluid and a reactive solid surface, transfer to a fixed object in a stirred vessel, macro- and micromixing of miscible fluids, and mass transfer in fluid-fluid contractors (especially gas-liquid reactors). It is concluded from the various examples that a direct relationship between the dissipated power and intensity of transfer or mixing can be established only under the two following conditions: local values must be considered at the point where the actual transfer and mixing occur, and not average values over the whole device, and power dissipation must be coupled to transfer or mixing and appear physically as the driving force of the process.

Notes: A mathematical model of the dynamic behaviour of non-isothermal fixed-bed adsorbers has been developed which takes into account the various mass and heat transfer resistances. Comparison of experimental and simulated results confirms that the model can predict the adsorption and desorption breakthrough curves of an adiabatically operated column, using only equilibrium data and tortuosity factors obtained from single pellet experiments. A simplified model with a reduced number of parameters was derived by investigation of the dimensionless transfer parameters under industrial conditions. It becomes evident that the main transfer mechanisms are convective heat and mass transfer in the bulk flow and diffusion within the pores of the particle. Dimensionless effluent concentration is expresses in terms of dimensionless time, a transport parameter, a non-isothermal parameter, the adsorption equilibrium and the inlet and initial concentrations and temperatures in the simplified model. For a chosen system of adsorbate and adsorbent, design charts can be developed by computer simulation, to determine graphically the breakthrough time as a function of significant process parameters, i.e. the dimensionless transfer parameter and the feed concentration.

Notes: A bench scale flue gas desulphurization spray dry scrubbing unit was employed to study the effect of fly ash on the removal of SO2. The equipment consisted of a spray dryer with and ultrasonic nozzle for atomization and a pulse jet baghouse. The flue gas rate was 1500 lN/h (dry gas). Four fly ashes, originating from different countries were investigated. The alkalinity and reactivity of the fly ashes were determined in a pH-stat equipment. Pure fly ash removed SO2 in both the spray dryer and in the baghouse. An increase of humidity divided the fly ashes into two groups. The high calcium fly ash gave a considerably higher SO2 removal than the medium and low calcium fly ashes which showed similar SO2 removals. Fly ash did not enhance the removal of SO2 when added to a lime slurry because lime suppresses the dissolution of the alkali in the fly ashes. The pressure drop build-up in the fabric filter showed a strong dependence on material properties.

Notes: Liquid-liquid direct-contact heat transfer in a spray column was studied numerically for a low hold-up. The solutions of the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy for both phases agree well with earlier experimental results, if one assumes a rigid liquid-liquid interface. Heat transfer inside is dominated by transient conduction and natural convection. It was found that the Nusselt number for free convection depends essentially only on the Rayleigh number.

Notes: The detailed dynamic simulation of coupled process units in chemical plants is gaining an increasing importance as a useful tool in plant engineering and operation. The outline of the program package DIVA (Dynamische Simulation verfahrenstechnischer Anlagen) which is currently under development is presented in the following. The dynamic plant equations and the corresponding Jacobian matrix are generated automatically. The full exploitation of sparse matrix techniques in combination with stiff ODE (ordinary differential equation) solvers allows an efficient solution of all the equations simultaneously. The possibilities offered by the simulator are demonstrated by the simulation of two laboratory plants.

Notes: Slurry bubble columns are widely used in biotechnology. Therefore, the effects of solid particles on fluidization characteristics, gas hold-up and volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficient were measured in a slurry bubble column (i.d. 0.14 m). The density and diameter of the suspended particles were similar to those applied in biotechnology with immobilized bacteria. Based on models of turbulence and of liquid circulation induced by rising gas bubbles, equations for critical gas velocity, gas hold-up and volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficient were obtained by dimensional analysis.

Notes: Spatially resolved oxygen concentration measurements were performed in premixed hydrocarbon flames by using laser induced spontaneous Raman scattering. The measurements demonstrate the performance of a relatively simple pulsed laser Raman probe for fundamental combustion studies and also for the control of the equivalence ratio in flames (best spatial resolution: 0.2 mm3; theoretical detection limit: 0.8% of O2). Comparison of the results with those obtained by a mechanical suction probe (Magnos 2 T) confirmed a good agreement. At present, control of different stoichiometric conditions is possible at a minimum O2 concentration of 1.3%.

Notes: Microbial desulphurization of coal by pyrite oxidizing enrichment cultures containing predominantly Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was performed in an air-agitated slurry reactor, 20 l in volume. A model of microbiological and chemical reactions, occurring at various points within the coal, was set up taking into account the pore structure of the coal. The influence of parameters relevant to industrial processes, such as superficial gas velocity, particle size, initial pyrite concentration, and slurry density of the coal, on the conversion of pyrite was examined. Variation of the superficial gas velocity in the range of 0.01 to 0.04 m/s confirmed that the reaction is not controlled by oxygen transfer from gaseous to liquid phase. The rate of pyrite oxidation depends mainly on the accessibility of pyrite to micro-organisms which is determined by the particle size of the coal as well as the distribution of pyrite crystals in the coal matrix. The accessibility of pyrite to the micro-organisms is described by the ratio of effective to maximum microbial activity, measured as oxygen consumption. Starting with higher initial concentration of pyrite in the coal increases the oxidation rate, according to first order kinetics. Enhanced slurry densities lead to a decrease of pyrite conversion, in spite of higher pyrite concentration. The maximum pyrite oxidation rate was measured at 15% (v/v) slurry density and 25°C as 1800 mg Spyr/kg coal per day, or 360 mg Spyr/l reactor volume per day.

Notes: Thermal radiation of gas/solid mixtures in high-temperature heat exchangers is of considerable importance for the design of heat exchange surfaces. Therefore, an experimental plant was constructed to measure solid particle emissivities, since there is a lack of relevant data in the existing literature. A theoretical equation was derived to describe the solid particle emissivity as a function of layer thickness, specific solid surface area, solid loading and absorption and scatter coefficients. Measurements were carried out for fluidized bed ash and quartz sand. The emissivities of these particle fractions increase with increasing layer thickness, slid loading, specific solid surface area and temperature. The description of these data by the derived model equation is very satisfactory. No dependence on wavelength was observed. The ash components do exert some influence which, for the present, cannot be described exactly.

Notes: The alternative effects of reaction kinetics, mass, heat and momentum transport on mass conversion by chemical reactions are examined theoretically for a reacot tube with laminar flow. The reaction enthalpy is considered. A heterogeneous reaction between several gaseous components takes place at the inner surface of this reactor tube. Strongly exothermic reactions lead to self-acceleration of the reaction, unless reaction enthalpy is removed through the tube wall. Under certain conditions, there will be a sudden change from mass transfer controlled by the reaction to that controlled by diffusion. This phenomenon is known as ignition of the reaction. The effect of ignition and its sensitivity to reaction enthalpy, thermal conductivity and diffusivity of the fluid as well as activation energy of the first order heterogeneous wall reaction are investigated by a numerical solution of the transport equations. Axial conduction of heat and mass is neglected both in the fluid and in the tube wall. Non-stoichiometric wall reactions of first order, with temperature dependent reaction rates and equilibrium constants, are considered. The results are presented in graphical form, as plots of the local mass flux at the reacting wall as functions of the dimensionless tube length.

Notes: The deterioration of mass transfer efficiency of an extraction column with increasing column diameter is the result of developing residence time distributions. These effects can be described by one-dimensional dispersion model. However, it must be verified whether the requirements for its application are fulfilled in the different types of agitated extraction columns. For the columns for which the dispersion model can be applied, a relationship will be derived between the necessary increase of column height with column diameter. This is based on the equations for calculation of the dispersion coefficient of the continuous phase. If the dispersion model cannot be applied to given a type of column, an investigation will be made on the possible modifications of operation or changes in construction, in order to permit a scale-up procedures as proposed here.

Notes: Precipitation is a rapid solidification. As a rule, it applies to substances which are sparingly soluble and is coupled with a chemical reaction or with a salting out process. The chemical engineer has to ensure that the product obtained has a constant and preferably coarse size distribution. This contribution compares the literature data on crystallization of soluble and sparingly soluble substances; it can be shown that, during precipitation processes, nuclei are formed, most probably by a primary mechanism. Analysis of the processes occurring during precipitation, such as chemical reaction, mixing and crystallization, leads to recommendations for the operation of precipitation processes.

Notes: A special type of jet loop reactor (JLR), designed for continuous operation and short residence times was investigated with regard to its mass transfer behaviour, described by the volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa. The jet stream and superficial gas velocities are varied in two JLRs of different sizes, equipped with different nozzles. Fully desalinated water, 0.08 molar NaCI solution and solutions of different concentration of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used as the liquid phase. A steady-state physical method is employed to determine kLa: air oxygen is purged from the liquid phase by gaseous nitrogen. The measurements show that the reactor is characterized by high power density and high mass transfer performance. No limit of mass transfer capacity was observed in the chosen ranges of volumetric gas and liquid flow rates, i.e. at a given jet stream velocity, the relationship between kLa and the superficial gas velocity is nearly linear. The investigations show that the mass transfer contributed by the jet stream largely depends on liquid phase composition.

Notes: This contribution presents the methods of measuring the mass transfer in centrifugal extractors and of determining it during the individual life stages of a fluid element of the dispersed liquid, i.e. drop formation, motion, coalescence and stay in the stationary layer of the dispersed phase. The experimental mass transfer coefficients of the dispersed and continuous phases are compared with well-known theoretical models developed for extraction columns in gravitational field. Due to the fast motion and coalescence of the fluid particles at high centrifugal field intensities, mass transfer in centrifugal extractors takes place during short contact times. Nevertheless, this contribution shows that mass transfer in a centrifugal field can be calculated with selected theoretical models of the gravitational field. The investigations on mass transfer are completed by a classification of the strongly deformed fluid particles in centrifugal field into regimes of circulating and oscillating drops. In addition, data on the performance of centrifugal extractors, undergoing several exchange steps, are given.

Notes: Detailed knowledge of the physical phenomena involved in subcooled boiling is of great importance for the design of liquid-cooled heat generating systems with high heat fluxes. Experimental heat transfer data were obtained for forced convective boiling of dichloro-difluoroethane (R 12). The flow is circulated upwards through a concentric annular vertical channel. The inner and outer diameters of the annulus are 0.016 m and 0.03 m respectively. The reduced pressures studied were 0.24 ≤ p/pcrit ≤ 0.8, inlet subcooling varied from 10 to 75 K and mass fluxes from 500 to 3000 kg/m2s, which corresponds to Re numbers from 30000 to 300000. The experiments, described in this study, demonstrate that liquid fluorocarbons show certain unusual boiling characteristics in the subcooled flow, such as hysteresis of the boiling curve. These characteristics are attributed to the properties of the fluid, mainly the Pr number and the very low surface tension. The pronounced boiling curve hysteresis can be explained by the fact that large nucleation sites may have been flooded prior to incipient boiling. A dimensionless regression formula is presented which predicts the onset of subcooled boiling as a function of reduced pressure (p/pcrit), Boiling-(Bo), Reynolds-(Re), and a modified Jacob number (Ja), over the whole range of parameters studied, with a good accuracy, including water data from literature.

Notes: A model is presented which consists of steady-state and transient codes for the description of reacting multiphase flow fields, including hydrodynamic fragmentation of liquid drops in relative flows. An application of this model for the description of large scale melt-coolant interactions (thermal detonations) is described. A simulation of two-phase chemical detonations, especially those with hydrodynamic disintegration of liquid fuel drops in the reaction zone, is possible, in principle, within the framework of the modeling.

Notes: In order to investigate the suspension behaviour of solid particles in bubble columns without and with draft tube, minimum gas velocities for generating and maintaining complete solid suspension were determined. Experiments were carried out in a bubble column with a diameter of 200 mm and a height of 2 500 mm. The bubble column could be equipped with a draft tube with a diameter of 120 mm and a length of 1 500 mm. The state of suspension was determined by measuring the hydrostatic pressure as a result of suspended solid particles with an inductive pressure gauge. Solid content εs, solid density ϱs, particle size dp, particle shape, particle size distribution, and solid wettability were varied. Furthermore measurements of integral gas holdup were carried out.

Notes: The adsorption solvent recovery process, known as Recursorb which involves desorption and cooling steps by a circulated inert gas, is analyzed in detail on the basis of equilibrium theory. Employing the method of characteristics, the model is solved for each step of the overall process. The estimations confirm that the process performance with respect to final gas purity, activated carbon useful capacity and operation times depends on condenser and heater temperatures. Simple expressions are derived for the calculation of adsorption, desorption and cooling times.

Notes: Adsorptive separation of oxygen from nitrogen and argon is carried out during the desorption steps of a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process which uses carbon molecular sieves developed by Bergbau-Forschung GmbH. The adsorption isotherms of the three main components of air are very similar. On account of the pore size distribution of CMSN2, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen is more than eight times those of nitrogen and argon so that air separation occurs by adsorption kinetics. Experimental results for the individual steps and cyclic operation of the PSA process are presented and compared with the predictions of an isothermal plug-flow model. Adsorption rate is represented by a linear driving force equation. If the diffusion coefficients are adapted separately to every step, a good agreement is observed between the model calculations and experimental results.

Notes: One of the most important tasks to eliminate dangers in chemical plants is the prevention of corrosion. This implies the provision of safe enclosures and reaction spaces for the substances to be processed. The present contribution deals with the procedure in the selection of materials for equipment exposed to corrosion and stresses the difficulties connected with the elimination of local corrosion. The relevance of prevention of crack forming corrosion processes is emphasized. Problems to be solved in order to obtain results from investigations, suitable for a safe application of a materials under practical conditions, are indicated.

Notes: Wall shear rate vectors in a bubble column and an airlift-loop reactor were measured using the limiting-current electrodiffusion technique. In connection with a new circular three-segment probe, the magnitudes and directions of shear rates were determined. The results for the bubble column are in good agreement with hot film-anemometry measurements in the same column. Moreover, the spiral flow structure, postulated in the shear-zone model of Franz, has been confirmed. In addition, the measuring technique was used to determine the flow structure in an airlift-loop reactor employed for the cultivation of animal cells. The region above the gas distributor of this fermenter has been identified as critical for mechanical damage to the cells.

Notes: Fermentation under modified gravity could be of interest in application to (a) increasing productivity of growth and growth linked production with microorganisms at high cell densities and (b) increasing the productivity of highly viscous pseudoplastic polysaccharide fermentation. In both cases, higher oxygen transfer rates in centrifugal fields result in higher productivities since these fermentations are usually oxygen limited. A further aspect of fermentation under increased gravity is the reduction of foam since foam coalescence time decreases with acceleration number. On the other hand, under microgravity, shear reduction would allow growth and production even for very shear sensitive organisms. In order to carry out fermentations under modified gravity, a special type of fermenter-the centrifugal field bioreactor CFBR-has been developed at the Institute of Chemical Engineering (Head: Prof. Mersmann) of the Technical University of Munich. For the first time, exoprotein biosynthesis of lipase with S. carnosus has been carried out under sterile and controlled conditions in this novel bioreactor, in presence of increased mass forces.

Notes: An experimental technique and evaluation method is described for the determination of local heat transfer coefficients in tubes or other ducts. By means of a rotary mixing valve, cold and warm fluid flows are mixed in order to generate an arbitrarily shaped but periodically oscillating inlet temperature profile at the test tube. The propagation of the fundamental harmonic oscillation from the fluid to the outer surface of the tube wall is calculated analytically. Comparison of fluid and wall oscillations yields the heat transfer coefficient to be measured. The inaccurate measurement of fluid bulk temperature in the centre of the cross-section is compensated by an additional correction. Experiments were carried out with turbulent water flow through a copper tube. Measured heat transfer coefficients were compared to values calculated using Hausen's equation and good agreement was obtained.

Notes: Mean droplet diameter of the dispersed phase in pulsed plate extraction columns was measured for binary and ternary systems. A change in the droplet size in the presence of solute, dependent on such factors as the direction of mass transfer, droplet size in the binary system, radio of diffusion coefficients, viscosity of the continuous phase, interfacial tension and driving force for extraction was observed. Two new empirical correlations of mean droplet sizes in mass transfer conditions are proposed. These correlations have been successfully applied to other extraction columns.

Notes: During molecular distillation in a falling film apparatus, temperature and concentration of the more volatile components undergo a marked decrease in axial and radial directions, due to the distillation in vacuo. The gradients produce changes in the rate of surface evaporation and separation efficiency along the flow path. A theoretical study of this problem is presented for binary mixtures. The respective differential equations for heat and mass transfer in the liquid film are solved numerically. As the results demonstrate, the aspect ratio of an apparatus should be large when a high separation is required and small when a high distillation rate is more important.

Notes: Flow phenomena, local heat and mass transfer and pressure drop of corrugated passages in process equipment are examined. Based on a method for measuring local heat and mass transfer, developed in previous investigations, a procedure has been formulated for the determination of local heat and mass transfer in corrugated passages. Using the analogy between heat and mass transfer, this technique allows the determination of heat transfer distributions in any structures with high local resolution. The corresponding pressure drop is presented together with the local and integral heat and mass transfer of different structures. It is shown that differences in heat and mass transfer as well as in pressure drop are due to different flow phenomena which also characterize mixing behaviour.

Notes: Crystallizer design has to take into account the physical and chemical properties of the solution and solids as well as the geometry, type and operating conditions of the crystallizer. The most important property of a crystallizing system is its solubility. High solubility leads to low relative supersaturation and large mean crystal size, and vice versa. High solubility systems can be sensitive to abrasion and attrition. For low solubility systems, mixing is crucial.

Notes: This paper considers the dynamic performance of instruments in control systems. Errors connected with transient measurements are discussed. It is shown that it is not always proper to assign common statistical properties to these dynamic errors. Emphasis is placed on temperature sensors. Common industrial thermometers are described and factors affecting their response discussed. An a-priori dynamic performance prediction procedure is presented. This permits preinstallation estimation of response characteristics of sensors used in industrial processes. Sensors in service also require performance assessment since they can deteriorate with use. In-situ testing is useful for this purpose and a recently develolped procedure is described.

Notes: The principle of ultrasonic spectrometry is based on the measurement of the ultrasonic extinction caused by the presence of particles. From measurements at different frequencies and with the knowledge of the ultrasonic extinction cross section of the particles, a system of linear equations can be established and solved to obtain the particle size distribution and particle concentration. With an experimental apparatus covering the frequency range from 1.7 MHz to 81 MHz, particles ranging from 20 to 1000 μm in diameter may be analyzed. The measurements can be carried out with particle concentrations as high as 10% by volume.

Notes: The “nozzle scrubber” is a wet scrubber in which the scrubbing water is dispersed in dust laden gas stream by means of one or more pneumatic nozzle. This scrubber is distinguished by an excellent collection efficiency for submicron dust at an unusually low energy and water consumption. So far, the physical effects affecting the separation cannot be explained by a well-defined theory. Therefore, it is sensible to investigate the collection efficiency with regard to the mechanisms of inertial impaction, turbulent diffusion and coalescence induced by turbulence. The experimental equipment is of a very simple design. A light scattering device was used to measure the particle distributions. In addition, electron micrographs were analyzed to obtain information about the submicron particles. The influence of operating parameters on grade efficiency has been demonstrated by their systematic variation. The contribution of turbulent diffusion to the collection efficiency has been confirmed; nevertheless, grade efficiencies were also measured when inertial impaction prevailed.

Notes: This study describes the gas and liquid distributions in a column with structured packings. The column is 0.5 m in diameter. It is equipped with a total of 1289 detectors in the top and bottom cross-sections. These detectors provide a detailed picture of the gas and liquid flows through elements of only 25 × 25 mm2. The maldistribution in the gas bulk flow is negligible. Only the observed wall can contribute to malperformance. The gas flows in parallel to sheet orientation, thus introducing a radial transport. Together with the change in the orientation of subsequent packing elements, this results in good gas mixing. It was observed that the liquid wall flow rate decreases when the gas velocity exceeds 1.7 m/s. Up to the loading point, the maldistribution of the liquid is constant. Above this point, the equality of the distribution deteriorates rapidly, due to the occurrence of large-scale liquid segregation.

Notes: Holographic interferometry is used for the determination of surface deformation of items of equipment. The material failure which caused the surface deformation can then be identified. Because a double-pulsed laser is used to plot the hologram, non-vibration stabilized holographic equipment is necessary. Thus, non-destructive testing of equipment components is also possible during plant operation. In this report, we present the experimental results of non-destructive testing of composite materials. We examined centrifugally cast pipes and filament wound pipes, which were made from glass fibre reinforced plastic and carbon fibre reinforced graphite. As a rule, the severity of failure is characterized by the apparent perturbation of its holographically stored fringe pattern. In this report, we present the experimental results which yield the relationship between the perturbation of interference fringes and the extent of the specific types of failure. Measurement results were compared with displacements calculated by the finite element method. By using the interferogram, and with the knowledge of tension stress beneath the surface, the size of the crack can be estimated. The size of the smallest detectable flaw was clearly smaller than the critical flaw size. Thus, holographic interferometry is suitable for detecting damage to cylindrical containers.

Notes: This contribution reports on the breakthrough behaviour of binary gas mixtures with ideal and non-ideal multicomponent adsorption equilibria. Investigations were carried out on mixtures CO2/C2H4 and C2H4/C2H6, both adsorbed on molecular sieve 5A (ms5A). The adsorption equilibrium of the system CO2/C2H4/ms5A may exhibit azeotropic behaviour, which subsides with decreasing active pressure (= sum of partial pressures of adsorbable components) or on raising the temperature. In contrast, the system C2H4/C2H6/ms5A maintains its ideal behaviour also at higher active pressures or lower temperatures. Attempts to calculate the non-ideal adsorption equilibrium from measured single component isotherms have failed when known models were applied. The investigation of the effect of azeotropic equilibrium on the fixed bed adsorption led to intersecting breakthrough curves of the two components. This behaviour is due to a displacement of equilibrium caused by the change in the active pressure and partial pressures, and a superposed temperature effect. This can be shown by calculating the breakthrough curves with the equilibrium model.

Notes: Even though the influence of solids concentration in the feed on the separation efficiency of hydrocyclones has long been recognized, a systematic research on the change in pressure drop across the hydrocyclone and the latter's separation characteristics has thus far been lacking. If all other operating parameters are kept constant, an increase in feed concentration generally leads to a coarser cut size, reduced sharpness of separation and a rise in pressure drop. Apart from the particles hindering one another's radial motion, the limited capacity of the apex valve and the changes in the flow field within the hydrocyclone cause additional particles to be entrained by the overflow. The flow ratio thus becomes an additional parameter in determining the cyclone efficiency. A theoretical model, which takes these effects into account, has been developed and successfully tested against experimental data.

Notes: In the first part of this paper, a mathematical model is presented for a liquid fluidized bed bioreactor using immobilized enzymes with reversible Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The model is based on the axial dispersion model for the bulk liquid phase. Inter- and intraparticle mass transfer as well as enzyme catalyzed reaction inside the porous beads are considered. The overall efficiency of the biocatalysts is calculated by a numerical routine. For the calculation of the concentration profile inside the reactor, a semi-analytical solution is derived which takes into account the height dependence of the effectiveness factor.

Notes: This contribution presents the mechanical data of high performance carbon fibres currently available on the market, based on experimental studies on stabilization and pyrolysis of PAN (SAF) from Courtaulds. The effects of stabilization and carbonization temperatures on the properties as well as on the ultra- and crystalline structures of the fibres are shown in more detail.

Notes: The residence time distribution in liquid phase was measured in a cocurrent upflow packed bed reactor for the system methanol-hydrogen at low Reynolds numbers and at elevated pressure. The plug flow with axial dispersion model was used to describe mixing in the system. The imperfect pulse method was used to measure the system response to a tracer pulse input. The parameters were calculated using the weighted moments method. The influence of the weighting factor was investigated. The experimental and theoretical outputs, as calculated by convolution, agreed very well. Different types of correlations were used for the Bodenstein number and liquid hold-up. From these correlations, the optimal one was selected for each parameter. A comparison was made between the ordinary moments and the weighted moments methods which led to the conclusion that the latter method is superior with respect to the accuracy of the estimated parameters and therefore strongly recommended.
