    Description: Polynitrogens have the potential for ultrahigh-performing explosives or propellants because singly or doubly bonded polynitrogens can decompose to triply bonded dinitrogen (N2) with an extraordinarily large energy release. The large energy content and relatively low activation energy toward decomposition makes the synthesis of a stable polynitrogen allotrope an extraordinary challenge. Many elements exist in different forms (allotropes)—for example, carbon can exist as graphite, diamond, buckyballs, or graphene. However, no stable neutral allotropes are known for nitrogen, and only two stable homonuclear polynitrogen ions had been isolated until now—namely, the N3− anion (1) and the N5+ cation (2). On page 374 of this issue, Zhang et al. (3) report the synthesis and characterization of the first stable salt of the cyclo-N5− anion, only the third stable homonuclear polynitrogen ion ever isolated. Author: Karl O. Christe

    Description / Table of Contents: Stereochemistry of Aliphatic Carbonium Ions, 7Phenonium ions play a minor role, if any, in phenyl migrations from tertiary to primary carbon. The products originate predominantly from localized tertiary cations. The deamination of 2-methyl-2-phenylbutylamine (10) afforded 2-methyl-1-phenyl-2-butanol (11) with 54% inversion and 2-phenyl-2-pentanol (12) with 18% inversion, respectively, at the migration origin. The solvolysis of 2-methyl-2-phenylbutyl mesylate (8) gave 11 with 6-28% retention of configuration, depending on the solvent. The configurations of 11 and 12 have been correlated with compounds of established stereochemistry.
    Notes: Phenonium-Ionen spielen bei der Phenylwanderung von einem tertiären an ein primäres C-Atom keine oder nur eine untergeordnete Rolle. Überwiegend leiten sich die Produkte von lokalisierten tertiären Kationen ab. Die Desaminierung von 2-Methyl-2-phenylbutylamin (10) ergab 2-Methyl-1-phenyl-2-butanol (11) mit 54% Inversion und 2-Phenyl-2-pentanol (12) mit 18% Inversion am Ausgangspunkt der Umlagerung. Die Solvolyse von 2-Methyl-2-phenylbutyl-mesylat (8) lieferte 11 mit 6-28% Retention, je nach Lösungsmittel. Die Konfiguration von 11 und 12 wurde mit Verbindungen bekannter Stereochemie korreliert.

In order to detect such polarization a series of methylenebicyclo[2.2.1]heptane and methylenebicyclo-[4.2.1]nonane derivatives of lesser unsaturation have been prepared for comparison.
    Notes: Die Titelverbindungen 3 und 7 wurden dargestellt, da in ihnen die semicyclische Doppelbindung wegen einer bicyclofulvenartigen Wechselwirkung der drei π-Systeme polarisiert sein kann. Um eine derartige Polarität zu bestimmen, wurden zum Vergleich eine Reihe von Methylenbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan- und Methylenbicyclo[4.2.1]nonan-Derivaten mit abnehmender Zahl von Doppelbindungen dargestellt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of Radioactive Metallocenes with 59Fe, 103Ru, and 191OsBy heating of inactive ferrocene derivatives with radioactive metall halides, i. e. 103RuCl3, radioactive metallocenes are synthesized with yields between 5 and 70% with 103RuCl3 or 59FeCl3 and nearly 1% with 191OsCl4. The radioactive metallocenes can be separated easily from radioactive by-products by TLC.
    Notes: Durch Erhitzen von nicht-radioaktiven Ferrocen-Derivaten mit radioaktiven Metallhalogeniden, z. B. 103RuCl3, gelingt die Synthese von radioaktiven Metallocenen. Die radiochemische Ausbeute bei der Reaktion mit 103RuCl3 oder 59FeCl3 beträgt 5-70%, mit 191OsCl4 knapp 1%. Die radioaktiven Metallocene lassen sich durch DC leicht von radioaktiven Nebenprodukten trennen.

Analogously the cyclic imides 5 react with 1a-c to form 2-(diacylamino)imidazolidines 6. The hydrolysis of 3 and 6 yields the products 2, 5, and N-formylbis(arylamino)ethane 4. The mechanisms are discussed.
    Notes: Die Tetraaminoäthylene 1a-c reagieren mit den Lactamen 2 zu 2-(Acylamino)imidazolidinen 3. Die cyclischen Imide 5 liefern mit 1a-c analog die 2-(Diacylamino)imidazolidine 6. Die Hydrolyse von 3 und 6 liefert neben 2 und 5 N-formylbis(arylamino)äthan 4. Die Reaktions-mechanismen werden diskutiert.
