    Notizen: A class of approximations to the matrix linear differential equation is presented. The approximations range, in accuracy, from the simplest forward difference scheme to the exact solution. The infinite series defining the exponential matrix is used to ascertain the accuracy of the various approximations. A clear distinction is made between approximations to the system equations and the forcing function, with the forcing term being represented by a piecewise linear function. Special application is given to the equations arising in structural dynamics of the form For these structural dynamic equations, the measure of the energy of the system is used to analyse the stability of the numerical approximations.

    Notizen: The method of moments is a semidiscrete numerical method for solving partial differential equations. The method approximates the solution of a partial differential equation by a finite sum of products of two functions. One function in the product is an unknown function of a single variable and the other function (moment function) is a prescribed function in the remaining variables. Using variational technique we obtain a finite system of boundary value problems of ordinary differential equations for the unknown functions.The main goal of this paper is the study of the theoretical background and numerical effectiveness of the method of moments for solving linear partial differential equations on rectangular-like domains.The mathematical formulation of the method together with error estimates and the theory of optimal moment functions are given. If for the one-dimensional moment functions piecewise polynomials of degree K are used then finite element type error bounds are obtained for the approximate solution in two dimensions.We also consider the numerical implementation of the method through the factorization method and efficient initial value methods. Several numerical examples showing the efficiency of the method are presented.

    Notizen: The number of equations which relate the mesh parameters (number of nodes, number of elements etc.) to each other is smaller than the number of unknowns contained therein. These rules are only applicable when several parameters of a defined mesh are known, but are unsuitable for use in the particularly interesting field of mesh projection unless additional inter-relationships can be found. Such relationships are given for uniform meshes in which besides the characteristics of the element type the ‘solidity value’ of the structure plays an important role.The equations are derived for two-dimensional triangular and quadrilateral elements and also for three-dimensional tetrahedral and hexahedral elements. The fact that these relationships are also suitable for estimating the parameters of any non-uniform mesh, discloses a wide field of application in the management of storage and in the control of programs for automatic mesh generation.

    Notizen: A method is described whereby the formulation for non-conforming bending elements includes the work dissipated across the inter-element boundaries. For the examples considered, this correction is shown to lead to a significant improvement in accuracy at little extra cost. Since the solution procedure is based on an iterative technique, the method would be particularly suitable if applied to non-linear problems.

    Notizen: The paper examines two triangular finite elements used in plate bending analyses for which Lagrange multiplier techniques have been used to set up the necessary equations for the solution. These equations involve either equilibrium of the system or the inter-element compatibility.     Notizen: This paper investigates the phenomenon of ‘noise’ which is common in most time-dependent problems. The emphasis is on the achievable accuracy that is obtained with various time-stepping algorithms and how this can be improved if noise is artificially damped to an acceptable level. A series of experiments are made where the space domain is discretized using the finite element method and the variation with time is approximated by several finite difference methods. The conclusion is reached that the Crank-Nicolson scheme with a simple averaging process is superior to the other methods investigated.

    Notizen: Quadratic isoparametric elements which embody the inverse square root singularity are used in the calculation of stress intensity factors of elastic fracture mechanics. Examples of the plane eight noded isoparametric element show that it has the same singularity as other special crack tip elements, and still includes the constant strain and rigid body motion modes. Application to three-dimensional analysis is also explored. Stress intensity factors are calculated for mechanical and thermal loads for a number of plane strain and three-dimensional problems.

    Notizen: This paper is concerned with the development of a numerical procedure for solving complex boundary value problems in plane elastostatics. This procedure - the displacement discontinuity method - consists simply of placing N displacement discontinuities of unknown magnitude along the boundaries of the region to be analyzed, then setting up and solving a system of algebraic equations to find the discontinuity values that produce prescribed boundary tractions or displacements. The displacement discontinuity method is in some respects similar to integral equation or ‘influence function’ techniques, and contrasts with finite difference and finite element procedures in that approximations are made only on the boundary contours, and not in the field. The method is illustrated by comparing computed results with the analytical solutions of two boundary value problems: a circular disc subjected to diametral compression, and a circular hole in an infinite plate under a uniaxial stress field. In both cases the numerical results are in excellent agreement with the exact solutions.

    Notizen: The application of the finite element method to the supersonic flutter of circular cylindrical shells subjected to internal pressure and axial compression is presented. A circular cylindrical shell element is used. The element stiffness, mass and initial stiffness matrices are given. The element aerodynamic matrix is derived based on a first order high Mach number approximation to the linear potential flow theory. The eigenvalue problem is solved by the QR algorithm. Numerical results are presented and these are compared with analytical solutions and experimental data.

    Notizen: A straightforward and general computer program for assembling and solving (using Gauss elimination technique) widely sparsed finite element matrix equations with very large bandwidth and capable of handling different degrees-of-freedom and variable bandwidth at different nodes, is described herein. The program assembles any type of finite elements having arbitrary number of nodes and each node may have differnt degrees-of-freedom. It requires only a small core memory in the computer, although a fast random access device is also needed. The two very important features of this program are (i) it does not store any zero submatrices within the band and (ii) during the solution of equations all operations dealing with zero submatrices within the band are automatically skipped and thus the savings of a considerable amount of disc storage space and computer time can be effected in many cases. Another feature is that many right hand sides can be handled simultaneously. Hence the program is very economical for structures having widely sparsed matrix equations. A listing of the computer program written in FORTRAN IV for CDC 6400 computer is readily available from the authors, but unfortunately could not be given here because of lack of space. The program is so general that it can be used to solve a wide class of finite element problems without actually having to understand fully the techniques behind it.

The present note demonstrates how the algorithm can be conveniently rearranged for computation in a virtual storage system with paging. Timing results are given for a sample problem typical of those encountered in nuclear diffusion computation.

    Notizen: In applications of the finite element method to complicated nonlinear problems, it is proposed to simplify the operator in each element, typically by a linerization process. Local approximations can then be more easily constructed in the usual manner, and a proper assembly can be made. Such an approach would lead to an approximate global variational statement; or if the variational principle exists but is hard to handle, it should suggest an iterative scheme with a built-in physical basis, hence a better chance to converge. The case of high subsonic flow over a circular cylinder is studied in detail by this method. With linear triangular elements, numerical results are obtained for 100 nodal unknowns in each quadrant. The convergence is extremely rapid up to a free stream Mach number of 0.42, slightly above critical. The accuracy is excellent as compared against Imai's analytical results.

    Notizen: An automated digital computer procedure is presented in this paper which enables efficient solution of the eigenvalue problem associated with the supersonic panel flutter phenomena. The step-by-step incremental solution procedure is based on an inverse iteration technique which effectively utilizes solution results from the previous step in determining such results during the current solution step. Also, the computations are limited to the determination of a few specific roots only, which are expected to contain the flutter mode, and this is achieved at each step without having to compute any other root.The structural discretization achieved by the finite element method yields highly banded stiffness, mass, and aerodynamic matrices; the aerodynamic matrix evaluated by the linearized piston theory is real but unsymmetric in nature. The solution algorithm presented in this paper fully exploits the banded form of the associated matrices, and the resulting computer program written in FORTRAN V for the JPL UNIVAC 1108 computer proves to be most efficient and economical when compared to existing procedures of such analysis. Numerical results are presented for a two-dimensional panel flutter problem.

    Notizen: The shape of a plate in plane stress is determined, such that the maximum elastic stress corresponding to given loads is minimized. The shape of the boundary is approximated by a series and optimization is carried out by solving a sequence of linearized minimum-maximum problems using linear programming. The optimization problem is extended to include multiple loading cases and geometrical constraints. The stress derivatives are found using analytical expressions for stiffnesses and stiffness derivatives of the finite elements. For the optimum design of a hole in an infinite plate under biaxial stretching the numerical result is compared with an analytical solution. As another example the method is used to optimize the edge shape of a shape of a junction in a web frame.

    Notizen: An algorithm is presented which generates an element stiffness matrix for non-prismatic beam-column members using Newmark's numerical procedure of successive approximations. The resulting element stiffness matrix on element co-ordinates is fond to be in excellent agreement with those available for limiting cases. An approximate stability analysis conducted on the covergence of the numerical scheme shows that the proposed algorithm is stable. The critical buckling loads for various and conditions are computed as part of the computational scheme. A computer program listing in FORTRAN IV is included which will handle essentially and order and/or kind of non-prismaticity of beam elements. The results are presented in the conventional and convenient coefficient format.

    Notizen: A Block-Stodola eigensolution method is presented for large algebraic eigensystems of the form AU = λBU where A is real but non-symmetric. The steps in this method parallel those of a previous technique for the case when both A and B were real and symmetric. The essence of the technique is simultaneous iteration using a group of trial vectors instead of only one vector as is the case in the classical Stodola-Vianello iteration method. The problem is then transformed into a subspace where a direct solution of the reduced algebraic eigenvalue problem is sought. The main advantage is the significant reduction of computational effort in extracting a subset of eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. Theorems from linear algebra serve to underlie the basis of the present technique. Complex eigendata that emerge during iteration can be handled without doubling the size of the problem. Higher order eigenvalue problems are reducible to first order form for which this technique is applicable. The treatment of the quadratic eigenvalue problem illustrates the details of this extension.

    Notizen: We suggest an exercise which illustrates many of the fundamental ideas of finite elements, and is nevertheless easily programmed and quickly solved. It is governed by a partial differential equation on a circular region, but by maintaining symmetry the stiffness matrix becomes small and tridiagonal. The accuracy of linear elements can be studied in detail, and a straightforward extension leads to the eigenvalue problem, elements of higher degree, numerical integration, isoparametric elements, and a simple example in plasticity.

    Notizen: The paper presents the theoretical and computational procedures which have been applied in the design of a general purpose computer code for static and dynamic response analysis of non-linear structures. A general formulation of the incremental equations of motion for structures undergoing large displacement finite strain deformation is first presented. These equations are based on the Lagrangian frame of reference, in which constitutive models of a variety of types may be introduced. The incremental equations are linearized for computational purposes, and the linearized equations are discretized using isoparametric finite element formulation. Computational techniques, including step-by-step and iterative procedures, for the solution of non-linear equations are discussed, and an acceleration scheme for improving convergence in constant stiffness iteration is reviewed. The equations of motion are integrated using Newmark's generalized operator, and an algorithm with optional iteration is described. A solution strategy defined in terms of a number of solution parameters is implemented in the computer program so that several solution schemes can be obtained by assigning appropriate values to the parameters. The results of analysis of a few non-linear structures are briefly discussed.

    Notizen: The finite element method is applied to the analysis of a two-dimensional steady flow around a box girder in uniform flow. The local potential principle for an incompressible viscous fluid flow is introduced as a basis for establishing finite element models and a determination is made as to whether or not approximate solutions obtained by the use of the principle give upper or lower bounds of the solution. The boundaries are set so as to be appropriately far from the girder and the velocities are specified at the upstream, upper boundary and the lower boundary and the total stresses are specified at the downstream boundary. The system of non-linear equations is solved by the standard Newton-Raphson method. Integrating the pressures and viscous stresses acting on the surface of the girder, the coefficients of drag, lift and pitching moment are numerically obtained for some Reynolds numbers. The wind tunnel test has been the only means to determine these coefficients for a body with irregular shape. The finite element method presents a new powerful procedure to determine these coefficients.

    Notizen: A complete analytical analysis of three-dimensional, quadratic displacement tetrahedron elements is presented. The results show that the element stiffness can readily be obtained from the much simpler stiffness matrix of the linear displacement element. Thus, the task of obtaining the matrix of the quadratic displacement element is, in effect, reduced to finding that of the linear displacement element.The analysis has been made possible only by using a symbolic manipulation language (PL/I-FORMAC) on a computer. A rather general program for computer-aided basic element analysis is presented. It seems that the extremely effective tool of symbolic manipulation has hardly been used until now in mechanics.

    Notizen: A strategy for solving problems involving simultaneously occurring large deflections, elastic-plastic material behaviour, and primary creep is described. The incremental procedure involves a double iteration loop at each load level or time. In the inner loop the material properties are held constant and the non-linear equilibrium equations are solved by the Newton-Raphson method. These equations are formulated in terms of the tangent stiffness. In the outer loop the plastic and creep strains are determined and the tangent stiffness properties are updated with use of a subincremental algorithm. The magnitude of each time subincrement is determined such that the change in effective stress is less than a preset percentage of the effective stress. The strategy is implemented in a computer program, BOSOR 5, for the analysis of shells of revolution. Examples are given of elastic-plastic deformations of a centrally loaded flat plate and elastic-plastic-creep deformations of a beam in bending. The major benefits of the subincremental technique are the increased reliability with which problems involving non-linear plastic and time-dependent material behaviour can be solved and the greatly relaxed requirement on the number of load or time increments needed for satisfactory results.

    Notizen: Two direct search algorithms for the optimization of non-unimodal systems are presented. One method is interior in nature by using boundary relaxation with pseudo one-dimensional search in the feasible region; the other one is an exterior method which allows the violation of constraints followed by the use of a penalty function to drive the search back into the feasible region. These two methods are usually capable of leaving local optima to reach a better solution if such exists. The application of the proposed approaches to several non-unimodal systems shows that they are better than the existing methods. The proposed methods are also attractive because of the ease of programming and the high probability of reaching the global optimum.

    Notizen: A numerical scheme with a high degree of accuracy has been developed for the full Navier-Stokes equations. The method utilizes the multi-mesh points for space and time derivatives in order to improve the truncation error. Whereas the existing numerical method employing the finite difference scheme, e.g. the explicit, pure implicit, Crank-Nicolson, and DuFort-Frankel schemes, has the truncation errors of the order (Δx)2, Δx being the spatial mesh length, the one for the present method is generally of the order (Δx)3. A numerical example is shown for a natural convection flow in a square box and the results are compared with those of Cormack et al. One order of magnitude reduction of the computing time for a constant degree of accuracy was attained for the two-dimensional problems. Furthermore, a two order of magnitude reduction is to be expected when the method is applied for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations.

    Notizen: In the present paper, a finite element technique combined with the collocation method is formulated to obtain numerical solutions of integral equations which determine the airload distributions acting on a wing oscillating sinusoidally in a uniform supersonic flow. This technique, which is formulated by the simultaneous use of two integral equations, is shown to be appropriate especially for the low supersonic regions, i.e., for 1 〈 M 〈 1·3, where M is the Mach number of the uniform flow. Although the formulation is made for a sinusoidally oscillating wing, it is obvious that the corresponding formulation for a stationary wing can be derived as a special case of that for the oscillating wing. Problems of determining the airload distributions for stationary as well as sinusoidally oscillating wings are treated, and it is shown that the accuracy of numerical results obtained by the present finite element technique is encouraging.

    Notizen: We recognize that established techniques permit two-dimensional interpolation to be accomplished efficiently as well as accurately when the grid of points, on which the data is available, is regular. Existing methods suitable for irregular grids are computationally protracted. We show that by using Lagrange polynomials of a complex variable we can interpolate, almost as conveniently as in one dimension, from an irregular grid onto particular points lying on parallel lines. Standard one-dimensional interpolation schemes can then be used to complete the two-dimensional interpolation. We discuss how, in any particular instance, the order of the Lagrange polynomials is chosen, and we present the results of a computational test of our method.

A systematic criterion limiting the number of possible point configurations for numerical quadrature formulas on triangles is established. Some new high order formulas are presented. Tables containing optional formulas with respect to minimum number of sampling points and required degrees of accuracy are given. They are arranged so as to assist with selection of suitable quadrature formulas for finite element computer programming.

These are based on the use of a node generation procedure which distributes nodes is a regular pattern across the network area and is sufficiently flexible to permit any variation in element density.     Notizen: In a recent paper, Dr. Frind has formulated a two-dimensional isoparametric finite element based upon the Hermite bicubic interpolation scheme. The present discussion focuses upon certain simplifications in the derivation which appear to have diminished the accuracy of the resulting element, and suggests a simpler approach to the element formulation. This author agrees strongly with Dr. Frind's recommendation of the Hermite parametric element as an efficient and useful tool for general field problems; the present comments are offered to point out that, in fact, the accuracy comparisons presented by Dr. Frind are biased against the Hermite finite element.

    Notizen: A global variational method (GVM) not requiring the boundary conditions to be incorporated in the trial functions is described. The method is outlined for a linear differential equation and the extensions necessary to handle the non-linear problem of the indirect design of a compressible fluid channel described. The method requires a suitable estimate of a parameter, but the results obtained for the non-linear problem indicate that the actual value of this parameter is not critical (provided that a sufficeintly large number of trial functions is used). Comparisons are made with the results from an alternative GVM approach described in Davies and Hendry.1

When systems of equations in more than one unknown are involved, analysis of propagation accuracy alone is shown to be incomplete. A distribution factor is introduced to complement the Fourier analysis in these cases, and application of the concept to two problems commonly encountered in the water resources field is demonstrated. The distribution factor is shown to provide important information which cannot be obtained from the customary analysis of propagation accuracy.

    Notizen: Efficient solution of boundary value problems for time-dependent inelastic deformation in metallic structures is of great practical importance. These problems are generally solved by finite element methods and separate descriptions for time-independent plasticity and time-dependent creep are normally used. The boundary-integral equation method was recently applied for the first time to such problems. This paper presents a very efficient numerical implementation of the method with a linear description of the relevant variables over each boundary element and a newly developed Euler-type time-integration scheme with automatic time-step control for time integration. Numerical results for plates in plane stress with and without cutouts, under different loading histories, are presented. A combined creep-plasticity constitutive theory with state variables is used to model material behaviour. The results are more accurate and are obtained with much less computational effort compared to a previous attempt with an uniform description of variables over each boundary element and a predictor-corrector scheme for time integration. The computer program developed is quite general and can handle plane stress problems for plates of arbitrary shapes subjected to arbitrary time-histories of loadings. The numerical results presented in the paper are for certain illustrative problems.

    Notizen: Several computer codes have incorporated the ‘overlay’ material models: the volume element, which is characteristic of the material, is composed of sub-elements with different kinematic hardening, perfectly plastic or even viscoplastic flow rules and different elastic properties, these sub-elements exhibiting all, however, the same total strain.1,2In this paper it is demonstrated how the simple mathematical framework we first proposed for elastic-plastic structures with kinematic hardening material,3 and we extended to some elastic viscoplastic ones,4 can easily be applied to these particular ‘overlay’ materials.One of the interesting advantages of this approach is a straightforward analysis of structural response under cyclic loadings by applying the linear elastic analysis.

    Notizen: This paper presents numerical results calculated by the extended field method for the problem of the forced harmonic vibration of two plates - one rectangular and one triangular.     Notizen: A numerical Laplace transform inversion technique is described, which is a modification of the inversion method using an exponential series representation. By adding an auxiliary function and using Erdélyi's inversion formula, the proposed technique provides the inverse approximation with improved accuracy near t = 0. Numerical illustrations shows that this procedure also works in cases when the original method of schapery fails to give satisfactory results.

    Notizen: The post-buckling behaviour of a cantilever column of variable moment of inertia with tip load is studied by means of a simple numerical iterative scheme. The governing equation of equilibrium is formulated using the axial and transverse displacement quantities, and applying linear constitutive and nonlinear kinematic relations. Numerical results obtained by numerical iterative procedure are presented in the form of curves showing the relation between non-dimensional tip-deflection and non-dimensional load for different values of shear correction factors and taper ratios.

    Notizen: An iterative algorithm is presented: it builds a continuous stress and displacement solution starting from the solution of a classical displacement finite element analysis. The modified solution satisfies the virtual work principle, and is much better than the starting solution. The algorithm is very easily included in existing programs.     Notizen: In the stressed-skin analysis of metal structures it is vital to have a simple yet accurate treatment of the shear deformation of profiled metal sheeting. A suitable theory is developed in this paper for the two important cases of sheeting fastened to the supporting structure through every and alternate troughs of the corrugations. Various practical factors are taken into account. The results of an extensive series of numerical investigations are presented as a simple equation and a set of tables.
