    Notes: Finite element methods can be formulated from the variational principles in solid mechanics by relaxing the continuity requirements along the interelement boundaries. The combination of different variational principles and different boundary continuity conditions yields numerous types of approximate methods. This paper reviews and reinterprets the existing finite element methods and indicates other alternative schemes. Plate bending problems are used to compare the relative merits of the various methods.

    Notes: The derivation of the stiffness matrix for a refined, fully compatible triangular plate bending finite element is presented. The Kirchhoff plate bending theory is assumed. Six parameters or degrees of freedom are introduced at each of the three corner nodes resulting in an 18 degree of freedom element. This refined element is found to give better results for displacements and particularly for internal moments than any plate bending element, regardless of shape, previously reported in the literature.

    Notes: Finite difference treatment of two-dimensional problems in elastostatics is usually based on the differential equations for the displacement vector or the Airy stress function, depending on whether boundary conditions are on displacement or stress. In either case, determination of stresses requires numerical differentiation and therefore use of a rather fine grid. Moreover, neither method is suited to the treatment of mixed boundary conditions. The alternative method developed in this paper uses the first derivatives of the displacement components at the grid points as basic variables and hence does not require numerical differentiation in the evaluation of stresses. Appropriate finite difference equations are established, and their use is discussed in connection with a specific example with known explicit solution.

    Notes: The theory, function generator routine and testing procedures are given for a six-node 18 degree of freedom triangular element. At corner nodes the variables are the displacement and the two slopes. At midside nodes the variables are the displacement, the slope normal to the side, and the rate of change of this along the side - i.e., the rate of torsion. Of two options, one divides the triangle into three and takes different quartic displacements in the three regions, and the other uses displacement functions with singularities at the vertices. According to a test which compares the energies of the two formulations by eigenvalues, the second is the better if the integration is accurate. The same test, together with others based on finite differences and on nodal values, etc. checks the correctness of the routine decisively.

    Notes: The paper presents first a general formulation of the elasto-plastic matrix for evaluating stress increments from those of stresses for any yield surface with an associated flow rule. A new ‘initial stress’ computational process is proposed which is shown (1) to yield more rapid convergence than alternative approaches (2) to permit large load increments without violating the yield criteria and thus simply to establish lower bound solutions. Several solutions showing stress distribution, strain development and growth of plastic enclaves are given both for the von Mises and for Coulomb (Drucker) type yield surfaces. Load reversal and thermoplastic behaviour are dealt with.

    Notes: The direct Finite Element Analysis which was successfully employed in the solution of dynamic flexural traveling wave problems is extended herein to provide the transient behaviour of finite beams and plates in which shear deformation and rotatory inertia are considered. The particle and angular velocities are exponentially damped so that the static solutions for these problems are obtained with the same analysis which provided the dynamic and transient cases. Three special cases are chosen as examples. In the first, a sinusoidally varying shear force is applied at the tip of a cantilever beam. The resonant characteristics of this beam for both the undamped and damped cases are studied. In the second, a step shear loading is applied to a cantilever beam and its damped dynamic history is studied. Finally, a circular plate whose outer edge is simply supported is impacted at its inner edge by a step moment and its damped transient behaviour is determined. The idea of the methods is potentially applicable to dynamic problems in general.

    Notes: The solution of the large numbers of non-linear algebraic equations occurring in analyses of non-linear structural systems using finite differences or finite elements is time consuming even for the fastest computers. This paper presents a method of solution based on a Taylor's expansion technique which is an aid in the solution of such systems of equations.Examples presented show that in the finite element analysis of moderately non-linear structural systems the technique provides sufficiently accurate solutions. For more non-linear systems the technique provides excellent starting values for the Newton-Raphson method.

    Notes: This paper presents a general theory of finite elements. The concept of finite elements is cast in a general topological framework valid for spaces of finite dimension. It is shown that the idea of finite element models can be developed in higher-dimensional spaces, independent of specific co-ordinate systems, for any type of continuous abstract function defined on the space. Generalizations of the familiar Lagrange and Hermite interpolation functions are presented as well as a general statement of the notion of generalized variables and conjugate fields. It is also shown that admissible finite elements can be developed for non-Euclidean spaces of finite dimension. Topological properties of finite element models are examined in Part I of the paper. Part II is devoted to certain applications.

    Notes: A method is presented based on matrix algebra for the dynamic analysis of a mixed rotating and non-rotating vibration system. Such systems occur in practice when turbo-alternator sets are mounted on flexible steel foundations.The mathematical model considered consists of a rotating non-uniform, bi-symmetric shaft connected via three or more flexible-film bearings to a flexible structure throughout which mass is distributed. The shaft, which is assumed to rotate at constant speed, is heavy, flexible and carries several rigid axi-symmetric discs.     Notes: Surface displacements at the end of a semi-infinite, circular cylinder due to an axisymmetric ring of forces on the end are examined. The solution which has been found may then be used to find surface displacements for general axisymmetric loadings by convolution. The solution, in tabular form, is given as corrections to the counter-part half-space solution.The method of solution involves a three step superposition process. First, the displacement due to a ring of forces on a half-space is found by using the Boussinesq solution. Then, the excess tractions on the half-space, over that of the cylinder, are removed. This is done in two parts. The problem of an infinite cylinder with linearly varying pressure and shear over a short length of the lateral surface is solved by using Fourier integrals. This is used for the removal of the pressure and shear on the lateral surface of the cylinder by convolution. Next, the stresses at the mid-section of the infinite cylinder are removed. This is done by finding a set of boundary conditions for the end which yields zero tractions on the lateral surface. Then a series of these boundary conditions is used to approximate the tractions which must be removed.With the solution thus obtained, two sample problems are shown: 1. an elastic cylinder in contact with a half-space; 2. a rigid punch in contact with an elastic cylinder.

    Notes: A presentation is made of a rectangular plate bending element, the use of which corresponds to the finite difference method. The element stiffness matrix is arrived at by approximation of the strain energy of the element by suitably selected finite difference expressions which contain not only values in respect of the deflection, but also values of its first derivatives. On the basis of the connection found between the two methods, some changes are suggested in the finite difference method, which involve a more realistic way of considering the detailed distribution of the loading. The effect of these modifications is illustrated in two applications.

    Notes: A review is given of some mathematical programming methods suitable for optimization of structures needing matrix methods for analysis. An application is presented for elastic flat grillages made of straight orthogonal beams normally loaded. Empirical relationships are used to relate beam section properties so that each beam element has only one design variable. Optimization results are obtained by methods of stress-ratio, linear programming-cutting plane and usable-feasible gradient directions. A comparison of the efficiency of these methods is given for the grillage designs which are shown to have non-convex stress constraints and numerous relative optima. Instances are given of non-fully stressed global optima and fully stressed designs which are not local optima for cases with only stress constraints. Discussions include locating the global optima for grillage designs and extensions of the methods presented to other structural design problems.

    Notes: The paper presents a method for reducing the size of a vibration analysis by generating an inertia matrix referred to a limited set of ‘master’ vibrational freedoms. In designing a computer program to perform this mass condensation process, the emphasis has been on providing a two way interface between structural analysis and vibration analysis programs. The transformation from the full set of degrees of freedom to the master set makes extensive vibration calculations economically feasible giving solutions in terms of the amplitudes of the master freedoms. However, by reversing the transformation after completion of a vibration analysis, it is possible to restore the full set of freedoms, allowing automatic plotting of mode shapes in full detail, and re-entry to the structural analysis program for the purpose of computing dynamic stresses.A worked example is given. This is a realistic machine tool structure rather than the simple plates or beams which are usually used for illustration purposes. Natural frequencies and mode shapes, calculated with various degrees of condensation, are compared with those obtained by using all possible freedoms.     Notes: The application of non-linear programming methods for the optimum design of statically indeterminate structures is discussed, with special emphasis on the design of elastic grillages loaded laterally and in plane. Some features of SUMT (sequential unconstrained minimization technique) are demonstrated by means of numerous examples of varying complexity. The Variable Metric method of search is discussed and compared to Powell's Direct Method. It is shown that non-convex sets of design variables are often encountered in structural problems of the grillage type. SUMT may still be used, but the choice of starting value and initial response factor decisively influences the chance of finding the global optimum.It is demonstrated that a fully stressed design may not necessarily correspond to the minimum weight design. Optimum design of grillages which are simultaneously subjected to lateral and in-plane loads may be performed efficiently by means of non-linear programming.

Numerical representations of the measured viscoelastic constitutive relations are used. This method is developed to obtain steady state solutions to mixed boundary value problems in which the character of the boundary conditions at a point changes with time. Such problems cannot be handled by direct application of the correspondence theorem. When systems of equations in more than one unknown are involved, analysis of propagation accuracy alone is shown to be incomplete.     Notes: Efficient solution of boundary value problems for time-dependent inelastic deformation in metallic structures is of great practical importance. These problems are generally solved by finite element methods and separate descriptions for time-independent plasticity and time-dependent creep are normally used. The boundary-integral equation method was recently applied for the first time to such problems. This paper presents a very efficient numerical implementation of the method with a linear description of the relevant variables over each boundary element and a newly developed Euler-type time-integration scheme with automatic time-step control for time integration. Numerical results for plates in plane stress with and without cutouts, under different loading histories, are presented. A combined creep-plasticity constitutive theory with state variables is used to model material behaviour. The results are more accurate and are obtained with much less computational effort compared to a previous attempt with an uniform description of variables over each boundary element and a predictor-corrector scheme for time integration. The computer program developed is quite general and can handle plane stress problems for plates of arbitrary shapes subjected to arbitrary time-histories of loadings. The numerical results presented in the paper are for certain illustrative problems.

    Notes: A quadratic method is presented for solving the eigenvalue problem of a structural system having a large number of degrees-of-freedom. The eigenproblem is reduced to a smaller problem by condensing the system stiffness and mass using Guyan reduction. Application of a set of corrective displacements to the reduced system subsequently leads to an eigenproblem of quadratic form involving an additional mass term. To obtain the solution to the reduced problem, inverse iteration with spectrum shifts based on the eigenvalues of the Guyan problem is used. The resulting eigenvalues and mode shapes represent a corrected Guyan approximation to the solution of the unreduced system. In addition, it is shown that the amount of improvement over the Guyan solution can be approximated by employing a first-order error analysis procedure. Numerical examples of vibrations of a bar, a beam and a plate demonstrate that the solutions obtained from the quadratic reduction procedure are very accurate and require relatively little additional computational effort in comparison with the solutions of the corresponding linear eigen-problem. The relationship of the present method to that proposed by Przemieniecki is illustrated by an example.

    Notes: This paper presents isoparametric formulation for the three-dimensional transition finite elements. The transition finite elements are necessary for applications requiring the use of three-dimensional isoparametric solid elements and the curved shell elements. These elements provide proper connections between the two portions of the structure modelled with three-dimensional solids and the curved shell elements. The element properties are derived and presented in detail. Numerical examples are also presented to demonstrate the accuracy and the applications of such elements in three-dimensional stress analysis.

    Notes: For the case of free edges which are loaded, follower forces remaining normal to the middle surface of a shell throughout the deformation history do not have a load potential. In finite element analysis, this results in an unsymmetric pressure stiffness matrix. Depending on the structure of the available computer program, implementation of an equation solver permitting solution of unsymmetric simultaneous systems of algebraic equations may be a tedious task. This explains the significance of the topic of symmetricability of pressure stiffness matrices, turning out to be of special importance in the case of static buckling under the assumption of a linear prebuckling path.At first, incremental equations for tracing the nonlinear load-displacement path are derived. Thereafter, the buckling condition is deduced. Then, it is demonstrated that symmetrization of the pressure stiffness matrix is admissible if the so-obtained ‘buckling pressure’ differs ‘very little’ from the ‘buckling pressure’ resulting from an alternative symmetric ‘buckling matrix’, as is shown to be the case for a simply supported cylindrical shell with a free upper edge, subjected to hydrostatic external pressure. The alternative symmetric ‘buckling matrix’ is a consequence of deleting the virtual work term, causing the unsymmetry of the pressure stiffness matrix, in the expression for the external virtual work. A mechanical interpretation of this virtual work term is given. It is shown to be equal to the difference of virtual work of the original pressure load and of a ‘substitute pressure-field’, of the form of a Fourier series of the former. This explains why, normally, the buckling coefficient resulting from the ‘substitute pressure-field’ represents a good approximation to the buckling coefficient stemming from the original pressure load.

    Notes: The two-dimensional Poisson equation is solved by the finite element method which uses rectangular elements and the bilinear shape function. Two kinds of weighting functions are employed, which correspond to the Galerkin method and the control-volume method. The results for three test problems, for which exact analytical solutions are available, show that the control-volume method leads to errors that are about one-half of the errors given by the Galerkin method. Incidentally, the five-point finite difference method is found to give errors which are nearly equal to those for the Galerkin method.

    Notes: The problem of optimal design of the shape of an internal or external boundry of an elastic bar in torsion is formulated by assuming the boundary shape is described by a set of prescribed shape functions and a set of shape parameters. The optimization procedure is reduced to determination of these parameters. For constant volume or material cost constraint, the optimality conditions are derived for the case of maximizing of torsional rigidity of elastic bars of linear material. The optimal shape problem is next formulated by means of the finite element method and the interative solution algorithm is discussed by using the optimality crieria. Several simple numerical examples are included.

    Notes: A method is presented for solving field problems using a finite element formulation, to be executed with the aid of a micro-computer. In order to reduce the requirements regarding memory space, the coefficients of the matrix defining the system of equations are not stored, but calculated when they are needed, in a modification of the usual finite element procedure. The method is applicable to all problems for which Gauss-Seidel iteration converges, and can handle problems involving more than 100 degrees-of-freedom on a computer with 8,000 bytes memory. Computing time may run up to several minutes per cycle of iteration, but on a small, personal computer, this is still acceptable.

    Notes: Geometric programming is a powerful technique and its application to mechanism synthesis has not been fully explored. In this paper, slider-crank mechanism is chosen since the objective function consists of a large number of terms while there are only two design variables. Thus the degree of difficulty is more and does not lend itself to easy application of the geometric programming. Here, modification of the objective function is suggested so that the degree of difficulty reduces to zero even when the working space constraint is imposed. This results in a near optimum solution. Application of signomial geometric programming is illustrated through a numerical example.

    Notes: A finite element formulation for the adhesive of a lap joint is presented. The element is based on the assumptions common to the theories of Goland and Reissner and Ojalvo and Eidinoff. Deficiencies of the lap joint theories of those workers and of a previous finite element formulation of the adhesive are pointed out and the covergence of the new formulation to their results is discussed. Experimentally determined extreme fibre strains in the adherends are compared with those determined numerically using the new finite element formulation.

    Notes: A general analytical and numerical procedure, based on the linear theory, is outlined for the elastic stress and deflection analysis of complex shells of revolution with arbitrary stiffness and density distributions, under arbitrary static and dynamic loads.     Notes: Finite elements with polynomial interpolation functions of a degree higher than 2 are used comparatively little on large FEM systems, except in shell elements. However, the author has had several years' experience in the use of the so-called ‘isoparametric, reduced Hermitian element’,4 Which has behaved excellently in an industrial as well as an educational environment. The reason for the interest in the Hermitian concept is that the overcompatibility of the element reduces the number of unknowns, the solution time and the discontinuities in stresses between elements.Explicit formulae for the family of interpolation polynomials of order q and degree p = 2q + 1 are given and hierarchical Hermite elements are introduced. The families of Hermite and serendipity elements are isomorphic and the latter may thus be extended to arbitrary high order.For some problems the equidistant node configuration in Lagrange elements of degree 3 and higher is not optimal with respect to smoothness, and a new type of element, the ‘Lobatto element’, is introduced.The methods consistently produce results of an accuracy which is above the requirements of usual engineering applications, but in graphics smoothness of curves is important for a convincing representation. The methods are of particular interest in industries working with structures composed of almost linear materials with well-known properties.

    Notes: An assessment of flat triangular plate bending elements with displacement degrees-of-freedom at the three corner nodes only is presented, with the purpose of identifying the most effective for thin plate analysis. Based on a review of currently available elements, specific attention is given to the theoretical and numerical evaluation of three triangular 9 degrees-of-freedom elements; namely, a discrete Kirchhoff theory (DKT) element, a hybrid stress model (HSM) element and a selective reduced integration (SRI) element. New and efficient formulations of these elements are discussed in detail and the results of several example analyses are given.     Notes: The identification (or ‘calibration’ or ‘inverse’) problem with in this paper, can be outlined as follows. The ‘real system’ is a deep rock formation which can be regarded as isotropic and elastoplastic. A mathematical-numerical model, intended for the analysis of its response to excavations, rests on the assumption of an elastic-perfectly plastic Mohr-Coulomb constitutive law and of a homogeneous isotropic initial (in situ) stress state. The values of cohesion, friction angle and initial stress to be introduced in this model are identified by minimizing a measure of the discrepancy (error) between theoretical and experimental relationship (pressure vs. average diameter increase), concerning a standard pressure tunnel test carried out well inside the nonlinear range. For the error minimization process, two very general ‘search techniques’ are adopted and discussed from the computational standpoint: the flexible polyhedron (modified simplex) strategy and the alternating variable strategy in the Rosenbrock version. Both are found to be adequate for solving this inverse problem, when the mathematical model has to be use as a ‘black box’ in a purely numerical identification process.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the mechanics and computation of the performance of a high energy chemical laser of the HF type. The analysis requires solving the-viscous, compressible supersonic flow equations which are coupled to the chemical and optical characteristics of the flowing gas media. A finite element method is chosen for performing the computation.The physical system simulated in the work consists of the supersonic mixing of the two flows; one flow consists of hydrogen gas where as the second flow is rich in fluorine gas. Perpendicular to the flow, an optical cavity provides for reflection and amplification of radiation characteristic of the output of the HF laser system.The HF system achieves a population inversion of the HF molecule as a result of the chemical reaction between H2 and F. This reaction also provides heat which couples with the fluid mechanics as an influence on the flow field.This paper will discuss the nonlinear nature of the problem, will present the finite element method used to solve the problem, and will compare results with others who have used finite difference methods for solution.

    Notes: The purpose of the paper is two-fold: Firstly, we develop stream function--vorticity and primitive variable finite element models of two-dimensional barotropic equations that satisfy the conservation of mean vorticity, mean squared vorticity (or enstrophy) and mean kinetic energy, and scondly, we present a comparative study of a number of numerical schemes for their accuracy in phase speed as well as in amplitude calculations for a two-dimensional, time-dependent, stream function--vorticity equation for periodic fluid motion in a channel. A circular vortex is placed in a uniform channel flow of a constant velocity (U) as an initial condition. This example makes it easier to identify the cause of phase speed error, either due to linear or non-linear processes, and furthermore, to find a satisfactory scheme for time integration. The numerical schemes compared include: Arakawa Jacobian,1 Arakawa-Matsuno scheme, Galerkin finite element, Lax-Wendroff, leap-frog, and Crank-Nicholson. The effect of a variational adjustment (see Sasaki16) is also studied. Computational time, RMS errors in stream function and vorticity, and the conservation of the mean kinetic energy and enstrophy are compared at the end of 120 (one period) and 240 (two periods) time steps. The study indicates that the numerical scheme that employs finite elements in space (same as Arakawa Jacobian) and Crank-Nicholson in time is the most accurate among the schemes studied.

    Notes: Simple mixed models are developed for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of deep arches. A total Lagrangian description of the arch deformation is used and the analytical formulation is based on a form of the nonlinear deep arch theory with the effects of transverse shear deformation included. The fundamental unknowns consist of the six internal forces and generalized displacements of the arch, and the element characteristic arrays are obtained by using Hellinger-Reissner mixed variational principle. The polynomial interpolation functions used in approximating the forces are one degree lower than those used for approximating the displacements, and the forces are discontinuous at the interelement boundaries.The equivalence between the mixed models developed herein and displacement models based on reduced integration of both the transverse shear and extensional energy terms is discussed. The advantages of mixed models over equivalent displacement models are outlined. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the high accuracy and effectiveness of the mixed models developed, and compare their performance with other mixed models reported in the literature.

    Notes: A series of algorithms, to solve the nonlinear algebraic equations resulting from nonlinear finite element models, are proposed. These algorithms involve a selective relaxation of the corrections defined by the modified Newton method. The resulting techniques accelerate the convergence of the modified Newton method. The improved convergence rate is obtained at the expense of a small increase in storage requirements.     Notes: The boundary integral method is formulated and applied using cubic spline interpolation along the boundary for both the geometry and the primary variables. The cubic spline interpolation has continuous first and second derivatives between elements, thus allowing the accurate calculation of derivative dependent functions (on the boundary) such as velocity in potential flow. The spline functions also smooth the geometry and can represent curved sections with fewer nodes.The results of numerical experiments indicate that the accuracy of the boundary integral equation method is improved for a given number of elements by using cubic spline interpolation. It is, however, necessary to use numerical quadrature. The quadrature slows calculation and/or degrades the accuracy. The numerical experiments indicate that most problems run faster for a given accuracy using linear interpolation. There seems to be a class of problems, however, which requires higher order interpolation and/or continuous derivatives for which the cubic spline interpolation works much better than linear interpolation.

    Notes: In this note, we give the basis functions (shape functions) for Hsieh-Clough-Tocher triangles, complete or reduced.
