Full-Waveform airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a novel method for observing the earth surface. It is suitable for the extraction of digital elevation models (DEM) and for estimating, for example buildings, single trees, and wooded areas, as 3D information. In this contribution, the processing of data from a flight survey with Riegl’s LMS-Q560 on 30 July 2008 is described. The accuracy of the extracted data was determined by comparison with official geodata and remote sensing data. For example, DEMs of the state survey office and land use classifications from satellite data were used. These data sets and the flight survey were realized within the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 32 (CRC-TR32) 'Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere-Systems', which monitors patterns and fluxes in the Rurwatershed in Western Germany. Workflow and the results of the ALS data comparison are discussed in detail. ALS is an important method for deriving DEMs. Furthermore, it is capable of determining more information about the earth’s surface in a very accurate way.
