Notes: Abstract The cost aspects of supplying cultural goods and services have raised many basic questions concerning the economic activity of cultural institutions. There is more or less a consensus that the same criteria that apply to the cost aspects of any business also apply to cultural institutions. The nature of the products supplied and the stress on revenues earned are different. A key question to be asked by each society is how to balance the product mix offered by its cultural institutions taking into consideration both the societal valuation of the public goods provided and the earning potential of the institution. This essay examines some of the questions that occur at this intersection of culture and commerce.

    ISSN: 1573-6997
Keywords: Institutions ; property rights ; art market
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
    Topics: Art History , Economics
Notes: Abstract This paper analyses two anomalies of the contemporary art market and the institutions created in order to allow the market to develop. The first anomaly concerns the incomplete specification of property rights in the market of successful artists. The second one originates with the lack of “credibility”, or time consistency, that characterises the relationships between young artists and gallery owners.

Notes: Abstract This paper updates prior work by Pesando (1993) regarding art as an investment. Using world-wide auction prices for Picasso prints for the period 1977 to 1996, this paper establishes that (1) a recovery in the art market did occur in the mid-1990s, but (2) the real rate of return on this segment of the art market remains low relative to its risk. Indeed, the real rate of return is beneath that provided by U.S. Treasury Bills.

Notes: Abstract This paper proposes a price index for modern andcontemporary paintings based on estimates and auctionprices. We use this index for the evaluation of theItalian art market and for comparisons with returns onother assets. During the period 1983–1994 art pricesincreased in line with inflation but returns onpaintings were lower than returns on financial assets. In the long run art prices are unrelated to financialassets prices, but a positive correlation with realestate prices emerges.
