    Notes: In spite of the fact that the first polysilane derivatives were probably prepared in the mid 1920's, there was little scientific interest until recently. The synthesis of the first soluble homo and copolymers about 10 years ago has stimulated an explosive development of this class of materials. This brief review traces the historical development of the polysilanes and focuses on recent studies of polymer structure, electronic properties, photochemical reactions and mechanisms and finally on new applications.

    Notes: The present status of research on Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films is outlined in relation to specific properties for electronic applications. The fundamentals of LB films are briefly described such as preparation techniques, film types, structure, and suitable compounds for functional amphiphiles, unconventional film-forming materials and polymers. Stress is laid on novel functional LB films exhibiting either photochemical and thermal reactivity, or electroactive properties such as electrical conduction, redox activity, electrochromism, nonlinear optical properties, and pyroelectric activity. The current status of LB films with regard to electronic applications is described, e.g. as photo- or e-beam resists, information storage systems, barrier layers, chemisensors, frequency converters and modulators, optical switches, guided wave structures or infrared sensors. Prospects for future molecular electronic devices are also briefly discussed.

    Notes: The surface modification of materials and its control now appear to be a challenge in many fields of technology, for example, composites, chromatography, and chemical sensors.A well controlled engineering process for producing self-assembled long chain monolayers on a thin thermal silica layer has been perfected in our laboratory. The monolayers are covalently bonded to SiO2/Si(100) heterostructures and have been chemically (chemical analysis, pH sensitivity) and physically (spectroellipsometric and capacitance measurements) characterized.The application of this process for sensitizing the surface of the silica insulator used in CHEMFET chemical sensors is presented using the example of an Ag® sensitive device. The main features of this sensor are its short response time(〈 2 s) and its long lifetime (〉 3 months).

    Notes: Ultrathin ordered organic films with a thickness of a few nanometers to about a tenth of a micrometer show considerable technological potential as a novel class of materials. Of particular interest are their tailor-made electrical and optical properties which are related to their anisotropic molecular structure which itself can be controlled on a molecular scale. A. critical review is given of the different aspects of the potential technological applications of ultrathin organic films. Some underlying chemical concepts and the basic problems to be solved in synthesis and preparation prior to application are discussed.

    Notes: Conventional polymer supports (polymeric reagents, functional polymers) such as polyacrylamides and polystyrene are based on either strongly polar or nonpolar chemical structures. As a result, these polymers may show low reactivity and poor performance due to their relatively limited ranges of solvent and substrate compatibility. More-recently introduced products are designed on the basis of copolymer structures, which incorporate both polar and nonpolar (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) residues and possess general solvent and substrate compatibility. Due to their ease of production, general solvent and substrate compatibility and improved performance, these new “amphiphilic” copolymers provide new impetus in the study and applications of polymer supports and functional polymers.
