    Description: This is the report from the Central Area Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 31st March, 1982. It includes information on the River Leven smolt rearing scheme, the annual report on match fishing at Skerton and Mitton fisheries, and the report by the area fisheries officer on fisheries activites from September 1981 to January 1982. The report covers information on river conditions and fishing, migratory fish movements, an update on the work at Middleton hatchery, Salmon cages on the Leven and Langcliffe hatchery. It also includes information on fish disease, fish mortalities, management work and monthly salmon and sea trout catches for rod, line, nets and fixed engines for the 1981 season. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

    Description: This is the report from the South and West Cumberland Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 16th October, 1978. It covers information on fisheries income and expenditure, the study of salmon propagation in England and Wales, work on the future programme of fisheries work, keep nets, and the drought order for the reduction of compensation water from Lake Ennerdale. It also covers the report by the area fisheries officer on fishing activities including river conditions and fishing, migratory fish movements, and an update on Holmwrangle hatchery. The report also looks at stocking numbers of salmon and sea trout in various rivers, predator counts for various rivers, fish mortalities and fish disease. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

    Description: The effects of chitosan (2%) coating combined with green tea extract (GTE) (1%) on the quality of tiger-tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) fillets including chemical, microbiological, texture, color and sensory properties during 16 days of refrigerated storage was investigated. The color changes were significantly retared, and the texture parameteres and sensory scores were significantly improved in tiger- tooth croaker coated by chitosan, GTE and chitosan combined with GTE, compared with the control. The coincidental lowered rate of increase total volatile base (TVB) content, thiobarbitoric acid (TBA), peroxide value (POV) and free fatty acids (FFA) were obtained in tiger-tooth croaker coated chitosan+GTE. Chitosan in combination with GTE had higher inhibition on microbial growth and yielded the tigertooth croaker with higher likeness, compared with the other treatments. Therefore, fish coated with chitosan+GTE had the lowest losses in quality during refrigerated storage.

    Description: Hand cream is used for rehydrating and improving skin properties. The skin is the first point of contact with the environment. Thus having healthy skin with proper barrier properties is quite important. The beneficial effects of fish oil on skin make it a favorable ingredient to be used in hand care products. In the present study, the efficacy and stability of various hand cream formulations using 0, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0% of fish oil were investigated and compared. The appearance, odor, texture, and pH of formulations containing 1 and 2.5% of fish oil remained stable in very good qualities during the storage, whereas the related values to the appearance and texture of formulation containing 5.0% of fish oil at the end of 6 months of storage at 45°C were significantly (p〈0.05) lower than other formulations and previous evaluations of this formulation. Weight loss was not observed in all formulations under study.

    Description: Snow-fed River Pinder -a tributary of River Alaknanda in central Himalaya was explored for fish assemblages and habitat specificity. Altogether 27 fish species were reported from three orders, four families and nine genera. Cypriniformes order was dominating followed by Siluriformes and Salmoniformes. Shannon-Weiner diversity index (3.09 to 4.10) and Simpson index of diversity (0.81 to 0.92) of four sites specified strong relationship with species richness. The distribution of fish species showed interesting patterns, 33% species were common to all four sampling sites while 14.80% were restricted to single site and the remaining species were randomly distributed among two or three sampling sites. Habitat variability in the river significantly influenced the species assemblage structure. About 7.40% species were found common to all habitats while 3.70% species were restricted to only single habitat type. The remaining 88.90% of species were dwelling between two to three habitat types. Deep pools recorded maximum species richness followed by shallow pools, while least species richness was recorded in cascade habitats. The conservation status of fish fauna of the river was ascertained by CAMP (Conservation Assessment and Management Plan). Out of 27 species, the status of 8 species was not assessed due to data being deficient, 7 species were categorised as lower risk near threatened, 6 as vulnerable, 5 as endangered while 1 species was exotic.

    Description: Otolith shape analysis is one way to identify stocks of different fish species in the marine environment. Length, width, area, perimeter, form factor, aspect ratio, roundness, circularity, ellipticity and rectangularity analyses of otoliths were undertaken to assess patterns of spatial and temporal stock structure of a wide-ranging fish, the Arabian yellow fin sea bream Acanthopagrus arabicus. Fish were sampled from 125 stations across the distribution range of the species in the Northern Persian Gulf and Oman Sea from June 2014 to May 2016. Analysis of morphometric parameters of otolith showed the minimum size in Khuzestan waters and the West Strait of Hormuz and the maximum size in the East Strait of Hormuz. In Bushehr waters, form factor showed the lowest and circular factor showed the highest frequency. These findings are in agreement with the irregularity in otolith margin of this area. The highest aspect ratio of otolith indicated higher growth in Khuzestan Waters. The thinner and longer otoliths were identified in the East Strait of Hormuz region. Further, rectangularity ratio factor in the Bushehr and West Strait of Hormuz waters was higher in comparison with other regions and this finding confirmed the quadrilateral otolith shape of this region. There are significant differences among otolith morphometric variables of the A. arabicus (p〈0.05). The result of discriminant analysis on morphometric parameters indicated that 53/8 percent were in their geographic location accurately.

    Description: To investigate the effects of carvacrol supplementation in rainbow trout induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), relative gene expressions levels of some pro-inflammatory cytokines and apoptosis markers in kidney and liver were measured. Fish with a mean weight of 44.71±1.33 g were studied using four different treatments with three replicates each. Inflammation and apoptosis were performed using LPS of Escherichia coli (25 µg ml ^-1) except in the control group and only carvacrol (100 µg ml ^-1 diet) containing diets were fed to this group (CAR). The last group was the infected fish fed carvacrol supplemented diet (+CAR). Kidney and liver tissues were removed 3 days after to determine the levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interferon gamma (INF-γ), caspase 3 (Cas 3), caspase 8 (Cas 8) using Real-Time PCR analyses. IL-1β expressions of both kidney and liver was significantly decreased (12.9 and 2.14 fold, respectively) in LPS treated cells (p〈0.05). While IFN-γ expression was up regulated in kidney, it had down regulation in liver. LPS decreased both Cas 3 and 8 expressions in kidney but increased in liver. +CAR increased expressions of IL-1β and IFN-γ compared with the control (up to 2-3 fold) in all tissues except caspase gene expressions that were similar in the control. In all tissues, IL-1β and IFN-γ expressions increased in +CAR group, expect IFN-γ in the kidney. However, Cas 3 and 8 expressions including apoptosis was induced by up-down regulations in all tissues compared to LPS-injected fish. The results showed that carvacrol had pro-inflammatory and apoptotic effects especially on liver tissue of LPS-induced inflammation model of Oncorhynchus mykiss.

    Description: The fecundity of the blotched picarel Spicara maena from the western Mediterranean (Oran Bay) was assessed by the volumetric method. Total length (TL) of studied females varied between 91 and 140 mm (mean ± SD: 111.9 ± 10.6 mm). Estimates of total potential annual fecundity varied from 16,750 to 28,125 oocytes per individual (mean ± SD: 21,404.7± 2,698.8). Relationships between total potential fecundity (F) and TL, total weight, gonad weight were established using the multiplicative regression model and a high significant correlation was found in all the cases.

    Description: Caspian trout (Salmo trutta caspius Kessler, 1877) as endemic migratory fish, possessing great ecological economic and biodiversity value. Among the habitat drivers, temperature related effects on the genome were considered in this research. During the embryonic developmental stages, genomic alterations of single cells were assessed by Comet assay. After artificial propagation of wild broodstocks, the batches of eggs, were transferred to incubators with constant temperatures, REDD water recycling, 3 stages water filtration, UV-C application on effluent of each incubator and DO–pH–temperature control. Samples were collected from normal (8°C), cold (4°C) and warm (12°C) treatments on eyed egg, alevin and larval stages. Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis were applied on samples for evaluation of Comet Tail length (TL), DNA in tail (DT) and Tail Moment (TM) indices as DNA damage markers. Comparison between mean values of Comet TL index indicated 85.19 ±9.2, 9.88 ±2.3 and 256.54±14.6 for 4, 8 and 12°C treatments, respectively. DT were 18.07±6.3, 9.72±1.9 and 31.47±2.8 and then TM were measured as 15.27± 4.1, 1.21±0.2 and 95.25±8.6 for 4, 8, and 12°C treatments, respectively. Significant difference between thermal treatments (p〈0.05) observed. Warm treatments demonstrated greater DNA damage in compare with others. TM explained better information in comparison with TL and DT in all analyzed samples. In conclusion, temperatures out of the range of the optimal conditions could significantly affect Caspian trout genome which could be the subject of management considerations pertaining to Caspian trout stocks rehabilitation and captive rearing strategies.

    Description: Non-tariff measures (NTMs) can affect trade performance of trading partners. In addition to trade performance, the NTMs (including sanctions) may have direct and indirect linkages to capacity of trading partners to meet their commitments under Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purposes of this research were to explore the performance of exports of seafood industry of Sri Lanka before, during and after the imposition of European Union's ban in January, 2015 and to develop indicators and measure the impact of the same ban on stakeholders of the seafood industry in Sri Lanka by looking through the prism of sustainable development. More specifically, this study applied composite indicator approach with min-max normalization, arithmetic mean aggregations and weighting techniques to assess the impact on several of SDGs. The principal component analysis was performed to identify the best sub-indicators for the composite indicator. During the period when the ban was in force, Sri Lanka seafood industry experienced lower revealed competitive advantage score, market concentration score and growth rate than at other times. Further, the findings revealed that the ban generated mixed effects on SDGs. Due to the ban, SDG 12 (responsible production) and SDG 14 (life below water) have been positively impacted while SDG 1 (no poverty) and SDG 8 (economic growth) were adversely affected. The research recommends that unilateral and ad hoc decisions should not be taken regarding NTMs because they have very sensitive and invisible linkages with SDGs. Furthermore, when there are legitimate needs to impose such NTMs, sufficient time should be given to the trading partners to put in place measures and actions for compliance with such NTMs.

    Description: The members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have been continuously involved in achieving a balanced outcome in the area of fisheries subsidies negotiations in 2018. The discussions have been ongoing and will continue in 2019. According to the 11th Ministerial Conference decision of the WTO, members are committed towards securing a deal in 2019. There are various aspects of fisheries subsidies that members of the WTO are presently assessing. The SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Target 14.63 is one of the fundamentals for an outcome in the fisheries negotiations. The SDG Target 14.6 aims to prohibit or reduce fisheries subsidies linked to overfishing, overcapacity and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU). In 2018, in the Rules Negotiating Group (RNG) on the fisheries clusters, members have discussed on overfishing and IUU issues. However, discussions on the overcapacity issue merits further investigations part of the SDG Target 14.6. This paper therefore aims to assess the relationship between fishing vessel capacity and fisheries subsidies as well as non-tariff measures, and provide further policy advice to trade negotiators in relation to the SDGs. In the assessment, we use panel data modelling of select developed OECD member countries that hold current vessel capacity and assess this against subsidies, non-tariff measures, exports and fish landing. The selected OECD member countries comprise of the proponents of the "Friends of fish" group. The finding of the paper provides policy recommendations for negotiators on fisheries subsidies and overcapacity. It also provides suggestions for special and differential treatment for developing and least developed countries (LDCs) in the fisheries negotiations.

    Description: We tried to estimate age, growth parameters, condition factor, length-weight relationship and mortality rates (Z, M, and F) of the common carp in Merdja Sidi Abed dam. Cyprinus carpio specimens were captured by long line between April and June 2013 in Merdjea Sidi abed. 220 individuals were collected and weights ranged between 265.5 and 620.3 g while the total length ranged between 26.3 and 35.6 cm. Length-converted catch curve was used to estimate total annual instantaneous mortality rates (Z), natural mortality was calculated using Pauly formula [ln(M) = -0.0152 - 0.279 ln(L∞) + 0.6543 ln(K) + 0.463 ln(T)]. Recruitment patterns were determined from the routine implemented in FISAT II. For all individuals (n = 220) of the common carp, the relationship between total length and body weight was: W = 0.0384 L2.70 (r2 = 0.906) for females and W = 0.0467 L2.653 (r2 = 0.976) for males a minor allometry was found for this species, mean condition factor K was estimated at 1.41. The maximum value of recruitment was recorded in March-April period with 19.56 and 15.20% respectively. The Battacharya method was used to estimate age of individuals that was comprised between 1 and years 3. The equation of Von Bertalanffy growth was: L = 36.75 [1-e-0.46 (t + 0.33)] for all the population. Total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were as follows: Z = 1.08, M = 0.82, F = 0.26 yr-1 while exploitation ratio (E) was evaluated at 0.24 indicating an under exploitation of this local resource.

    Description: The present paper reports a new record of Giant devil ray Mobula mobular (Bonnaterre, 1788) from western Algerian waters that is encountered for the first time in that coast since its first description in 1901 and last observation in late 80’s. This elasmobranch is categorized as endangered on the IUCN Red List (Endangered A2d ver 3.1) and is likely to be the rarest of the nine species of Mobula genus. Occasionally it is captured in Mediterranean Sea by purse seines, bottom and pelagic trawls, pelagic nets, bottom longlines, drifters and harpoons. The specimen stranded in “la Madrague Beach” in Western Algerian coasts. Its disc length was measuring 108.96 cm and disc width was 226.02 cm. This Myliobatidae is rarely seen with daily landed fish at Oran fishery. Up to date no explicit reason can be given for the strand of M. mobular but ghost fishing and important maritime traffic stay the most plausible cause of this incident.

    Description: The shrimp aquaculture is one of the most important livelihoods in the Philippines. Although there is an observed boost in the production of shrimps in the Philippines, there are remaining problems that are needed to be resolved. Bacterial and viral infections in shrimps have significantly affected its mortality, resulting in lower production and yield. In order to prevent or lessen this effect, various researches have been made to increase the resistance of shrimps against infections. In this study, a probiotic microorganism, Lactobacillus salivarius was used as a dietary supplementation for Macrobrachium rosenbergii and see its influence on the antioxidant biomarkers and temperature stress tolerance of the shrimp. Three concentrations of L. salivarius (1.0x107, 1.0x108, and 1.0x109 cells/g) were initially tested for its effect towards the oxidative stress tolerance and the oxygen consumption of the shrimp. The study involved the use of various antioxidant biomarkers including total glutathione (tGSH), catalase enzyme activity, and lipid peroxidation. Results showed that 1.0x108 cell/g of L. salivarius was the most effective concentration of probiotic microorganism per weight of feeds in improving the metabolic rate of the shrimp. Oxidative stress tolerance levels were observed to be increasing in terms of the catalase reaction (12.46 and 21.74 nmole/min) and lipid peroxidation (1.4X10-7 and 1.49X10-7 nmole MDA/mg protein) on both hepatopancreas and muscles tissues when the shrimp was fed with supplemented feeds. Also, high oxidant stress biomarkers were more evident on the hepatopancreas than the muscles.

    Description: A preliminary study on spawning period, length at maturity, and main fishing grounds of Decapterus macrosoma (shortfin scad) collected from coastal waters of San Fernando, Romblon, Philippines were conducted. A total of 1,168 specimens were collected from July 2016 to December 2017. From these specimens, the minimum and maximum total lengths were 11.50 cm to 22 cm while its body weights ranged from 13 g to 100 g, respectively. D. macrosoma was capable of spawning whole year round. Two spawning peaks were observed (February and August to September) based on the monthly mean gonadosomatic indices. Male appeared to dominate female as evidenced by its sex ratios. The lengths at 50% maturity of female and male D. macrosoma were estimated at 15.29 cm and 17.22 cm, respectively. D. macrosoma was caught in volume through commercial ring net at a depth of about 150 m-200 m within the municipal waters. Coastal waters near barangay Canjalon and Agtiwa were identified as the main fishing grounds of D. macrosoma in San Fernando, Romblon. This initial data on spawning period may be used as a basis in implementing closed fishing season of D. macrosoma in the locality, and the length of maturity may as well be used for the allowable size of the capture of this species.

    Description: The eco-translation approach offers a new perspective to translate concepts in fishing and aquaculture. It focuses on ecological meanings of local knowledge (LK). Such knowledge, embedded in the local language, Hiligaynon, is used as an impetus for developing a trilingual glossary of fishing and aquaculture. Eco-translation becomes the theoretical springboard for translating Hiligaynon words in Filipino and English. The gathering of word tokens is informed by linguistic ethnography, a research method that focuses on the description of the community experiences, activities, and appreciation of its ecology. The LK is presented through the fisherfolk’s narratives of their cultural experiences, identification, and analysis of local fishing and aquaculture word tokens, along with its validation. The trilingual glossary highlights the concepts on preparations, harvesting, and marketing of fishing and aquaculture. Evidently, the community uses its LK through its language to create concepts for fishing and aquaculture that represent its own culture and ecological experiences.

    Description: Farming of Litopenaeus vannamei in the Philippines was seen as a measure to increase shrimp production in the country. Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV) is a viral pathogen reported to be associated with Litopenaeus vannamei and other shrimp species. TSV outbreak impedes the production of Litopenaeus vannamei population and other species susceptible to the virus. Detection of TSV in L. vannamei in the Philippines calls for proper mitigation and appropriate actions for aquaculture and environmental management towards sustainable development. This study embarked on the detection of TSV using a purposive sampling method. Samples showing morphological symptoms of TSV such as redness of the carapace and pleopods and necrotic gill tissue collected from sites in Luzon and Visayas in the Philippines were processed. Viral RNA was extracted from the gills, the central area of infiltration and replication site of the virus. Complementary DNA (cDNA) was synthesized from the RNA templates and were subjected to RT-PCR under specific conditions using TSV specific primers against a positive control. Selected sites in the Philippines were proven to be positive of infection as they showed morphological symptoms and RT-PCR result in having a band at around 200 base pairs (bp). Percentage of prevalence results were obtained: Bulacan with 5 out of 15 samples (33%), Batangas with 7 out of 15 samples (47%), Bohol with 1 out of 15 samples (7%) and Cebu with 2 out of 15 samples (13%). The Batangas samples showed the highest prevalence of 47% (7 out of 15 samples) that were positive of the infection. This study reported the presence of TSV in L. vannamei in the country using morphological and molecular techniques.

    Description: This study used mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 in the identification of the fish prey from the gut samples collected from a stranding of a dead Irrawaddy dolphin in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental. Obtained consensus sequences were searched against the nucleotide database of NCBI and reference sequences, and sample sequences were used for generating the dendrogram and the pairwise genetic distances between species. Results showed that most of the sample sequences were 99% identical to the reference sequences.Eubleekeria splendens and Conger japonicus were the identified species in the stomach contents. E. splendens is a demersal and coastal species while C. japonicus is a demersal species and has not been previously recorded in the Philippines. Conflict in the taxonomy of the Conger genus may suggest that this may be identified as C. jordani. This study reports the first record of fish prey identification of the Irrawaddy dolphin in the country. Continuous monitoring of the Irrawaddy dolphin in the Guimaras Strait, including their feeding ecology, is needed to understand the population further and to improve their conservation.

    Description: Efficiency of various meshes of gillnets and trolling gear was investigated for catching kingfish (Scomberomorus commerson) in coastal waters of Sistan and Baluchestan province in 2007. In gillnets with mesh sizes between 57 to 110 mm and netting of monofilamnet and multifilament, the size distribution of kingfish ranged between 40 to 78 cm of fork length, which all specimen caught were immature. In mesh size of 146 mm and 171 mm, the length range of the species was larger, in which the frequency of immature fish for the respective mesh sizes was 19 and 11. In general, most fish was captured by wedging in the all mesh sizes. The size range of kingfish captured by the trolling was between 52 and 147 cm, of which more than 50 percent of caught fish were immature. The proportion of kingfish catches in the gillnets of 57-110 mm mesh sizes is about 13% of the total catch composition, for which the mesh sizes are considered as the dominant gillnets for capturing the species in this area. The conribution of kingfish catches in 133, 146, and 171 mm mesh sizes was 1.1, 52.3 and 18.9% respectively, with a 146-mm mesh size is considered as a dominant gillnet for this species. The implementation of the ban on the use of 57 to 110 mm mesh sizes for exploitation of kingfish is mandatory, which the mesh size of 146 mm and above seems to be appropriate for responsible fishery of the species. However, recommendation of standard mesh size needs to be re-examined in field trials.

    Description: The Sustainable Development Goal for the oceans and coasts (SDG 14) as part of the 2030 Agenda can be considered as an important step towards achieving more comprehensive blue growth. Here, we selected a set of 18 indicators to measure progress against SDG 14 for EU coastal states in the Baltic and the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean since 2012. In our assessment we distinguish between a concept of weak and strong sustainability, assuming high and low substitution possibilities, respectively. Overall, we show that the majority of countries in our assessment fail to achieve comprehensive blue growth. Sweden, Spain, Ireland, and in particular Portugal experienced a considerable reduction in scores since 2012. The only exemption is Estonia which managed to improve its scores over time under both concepts of sustainability. The unsustainable development at the EU level is mainly driven by deteriorations in indicators related to fisheries.

    Description: The feeding habits and trophic level of Himantura gerrardi were studied according to sex and size classes of 80 individuals obtained using bottom trawl between May and December 2014 from the Oman Sea. Collected specimens were divided into three size classes (small〈38 cm, medium 38-58 cm and large〉58 cm) based on disk width. Prey was identified in seven main zoological categories, where crustacean and polychaetes were the dominant in diets, indicating this species is a demersal dwelling species. No significant differences were observed between sexes, but size classes showed significant differences in their diets. Also, results showed a decrease in feeding overlap between size classes with an increase in disk width, suggesting that intraspecific competition reduced, which allows the coexistence of different size classes. Trophic level was positively correlated with the disk width, which was lower than 4.0 for both sexes and different size classes, placing it in an intermediate trophic level.

    Description: After entering aquatic ecosystems, heavy metals accumulate in the organs and tissues of aquatics including fish and finally enter the food chain. These heavy metals can enter the human body through eating contaminated fish. Absorbance values and accumulation of heavy metals in aquatics especially the fish depend on ecological conditions, physical, chemical and biological factors of water, the element type, and the physiological state of the aquatic (Oryan et al., 2010). Among aquatic ecosystems, wetlands and rivers are considerably important from the point of ecology. Rivers act as carriers of nutrients and non–nutrients and wetlands act as sinks for these substances. Now this effect will be more apparent if the wetland is an intermediary between a river and a static ecosystem. The Anzali Wetland is the type of ecosystem that embraces water from 11 rivers from one side and passes water into the Caspian Sea through a second outlet on the other side. The rivers passing through urban and rural areas and forests carry different types of organic matter, minerals, sediment, and industrial sewage (Taheri, 2013). The Anzali Wetland is one of the valuable wetlands registered in the Ramsar International Convention the contamination of which has become the main challenge for the people and officials during the past two decades (Khosravi, 2011).

    Description: Costa Rica is among the first few countries to respond immediately and favourably to the question of implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (the SSF Guidelines). In a move that extends overwhelming support to the small-scale fisheries, in particular to women in the sector, the Costa Rican government, in association with the country’s fishers and their representatives, and civil society organisations, has introduced a bill for the implementation of the SSF Guidelines. Titled ‘General Law for the sustainability of small-scale, artisanal fisheries in the context of food security, poverty eradication and shared governance’, this bill is presently under consideration by the representatives of the Costa Rican Legislative Assembly.

    Description: Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries and are distributed along the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Using a logbook on small pelagic fisheries, a GIS-based environmental modeling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of anchovy and sardine in relation to environmental variables. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was applied to provide a preliminary view of the relationships between fish presence/absence and environmental variables. Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) indicated the presence/absence of fish was related to distance from the nearest coast, depth, sea surface Chlorophyll-a, and SST. Results of the EFH showed that sardine is concentrated in specific areas of more favorable conditions, such as north of the Persian Gulf and all areas of the northwest of the Oman Sea. However, EFH of anchovy showed a more widespread distribution, occupying most of the north-west of the Oman Sea coastal waters, south of Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormoz as well as the Parsian district in the north of the Persian Gulf. In this study, it seems that the anchovy showed the probability of presence in the areas with more distance from the coastal waters. However, the EFH probability presences of sardine were predicted for near coastal water and obviously, shallower waters. Due to the development of small pelagic fisheries, it is highly recommended to investigate anchovy and sardine fishing possibility in areas with high EFH prediction probability.

    Description: Monthly length frequency data of banana shrimp, Penaeus merguiensis were collected from the coastal waters of the north east of the Persian Gulf, from January 2012 to January 2013. Software package FiSAT was used to analyze the length frequency data. Growth parameters, mortalities, exploitation rate and recruitment pattern were estimated from the carapace length in the area. Based on length – weight relationships, the estimated parameter a was 0.0015 for males and females and b was 2.8015 for males and 2.7852 for females. The estimated growth parameters: L∞=39.5 mm, K=1.8 year^−1 and t0=-0.08 year^−1 for males and L∞=50 mm, K=1.5 year^−1 and t0=-0.09 year^−1 for females. Longevity was estimated 1.67 and 2.00 years for males and females, respectively. The estimated mortality coefficients, were Z=5.9 (4.89 – 6.92) year−1 (α=0.05), M=2.9 year^−1 and F=3.0 year^−1 for males and Z=5.7 (4.94–6.37) year^−1 (α=0.05), M=2.5 year^−1 and F=3.2 year^−1 for females. The length at first capture, Lc estimated from the probability of capture routine was 23.3 mm for males and 24.2 mm for females. Sex ratio (M:F=1.1:1) was significantly different to 1:1. The exploitation rates of shrimp were 0.49 and 0.56 for males and females, respectively which could get higher because the survival of spawning stock after the fishing season is related to environmental factors and has less effect on the next year’s biomass. Recruitment was continued throughout the year but with one major peak in July to November.

    Description: One of the most visible direct impacts of fishing is the capture of non-target species, known collectively as by-catch. By-catch includes species that are unwanted and discarded (discards) and species that are retained and sold (byproduct) (Stobutzki et al., 2003). Although tuna purse seine fisheries have been shown to be selective, leading to lower levels of by-catch than other fisheries (Alverson et al., 1994; Kelleher, 2005), several species can be incidentally caught and, in some cases, discarded at sea. These include vulnerable and sensitive species such as turtles, mammals, and sharks (Minami et al. 2007; Romanov, 2008b). Tuna purse seine fisheries probably apply the most intensive direct human impact on the tropical epipelagic ecosystems in all oceans. Because of the worldwide scale of purse seine fisheries, an assessment of their impact on associated and dependent species is essential (Romanov, 2002a).

    Description: In the current paper reproductive strategy and growth rates of Luciobarbus esocinus were investigated from 2010 to 2012, in Gamasiab River, Kermanshah, Iran. Samples were collected seasonally by gillnet and electro-fisher device. Sex ratio was evaluated from 162 individuals and the percentage of male and female individuals were 54.76% and 45.24% respectively. Age structure was distributed between I and V and most frequency numbers for males and females belonged to II and IV age group, respectively. Length-weight relationship was computed as W=8E-05TL^2.6546 for all individuals. Mean total length and weight was 333.82±13.10 mm and 297.67±4.85 g for males, and 371.5±21.17 mm and 307.85±7.64 g for females. The von-Bertalanffy growth models of L. esocinus were described as Lt =357.14×[1-e^(-0.77×(t-0.090))] for males, Lt =367.02×[1-e^(-0.78×(t–0.094))] for females and Lt =363.57×[1-e^(-0.76×(t –0.087))] for both sexes. Results indicated that growth factors were highly similar in spring, summer and winter. CDA analysis revealed that the total and gonad weight are the main factors in discriminant analysis. The highest GSI values were found in spring for females and winter for males, however, it decreased rapidly after spring in females. Maximum growth rates were observed in early ages (I-II) and depleted with ages. K value and L∞ were determined as 0.77±0.09 Y^-1 and 357.14±10.38 mm for males and 0.78±0.24 Y^-1 and 367.02±24.15 mm for females, respectively. In conclusion this study provided basic information for stock assessment and management of L. esocinus in Gamasiab Reservoir.

    Description: National Workshop on Small-scale Fisheries, Cyclone Ockhi and Disaster Risk Management was held on 28 to 29 May, 2018 at Thiruvananthapuram. The workshop was organised by the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) Trust with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Cyclone Ockhi, as it was named, took the life of a number of fishers, injured many and destroyed fishing vessels and gear.

    Description: Problems of access and control over food, and changes in consumption and distribution patterns are behind the poor nutritional intake in Indonesia's coastal communities. In 2016, five infants in Aru Island, Maluku, Indonesia, suffered from malnutrition. The five had to be intensively treated in the Regional Hospital of Cendrawasih Dobo, the capital city of Aru Island Regency. The patients were from poor families who suffer from poor nutritional intake. One of the causes of malnutrition in Indonesia is limited access to food in several regions. Problems related to access and control over food, and changes in consumption and distribution patterns are behind the poor nutritional intake.

    Description: The trawl fishing is used in the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of ​​Oman to catch different kinds of aquatic animals by small and large trawler. One of the most important subjects is the rate and process of aquatic escapement during fishing and standardization of the nets. This research was designed to investigate fish escapement from different parts of the trawl. Sampling was carried out with four small pockets attached in different parts of the net. After six hauling operations, aquatic animals from all of the pockets were identified and measuring. Compare between pockets showed that T. lepturus with mean length of 72.5 cm had the highest value and S. insidiator with 5.2 cm length had the lowest one. In addition, S. tumbil with mean weight of 226 g had highest level while P. semisulcatus with the value of 1.7 g had lowest mean weight. Study of pockets showed highest escapements (64.52%) which was happened in the pocket close to cod end. Comparison between four pockets showed significant difference on amounts of aquatic escapement and the most escapements happened in the pockets close to cod end.

    Description: Abstract in english: The study to establish the closure season of artisanal penaeid shrimpp fishing in Inhambane Bay, located in the province with the same name in the south of Mozambique, was carried out between June 2013 and May 2014, covering four fishing pre-defined as shrimp londing sits along Bay. The specimens in total of 100 individuals of each species from each of 2 day sampling period used for this work were obtained from fishermen using beach seine and it covered the periods of live and dead tide of each month for 12 consecutive months. The main objective of this work was to study the reproductive biology aspects and size structure of Fenneropenaeus indicus, with a view to establishing the period for the closure season to protect the artesanal fishery database juveniles shrimp in the Bay of Inhambane. Monthly data extracted from the statistical database of small-scale fishing "Pescart" on fisheries statistics over a series of five consecutive years since 2009, have shown that Fenneropenaeus indicus dominated catches with an average of over 65%. At all sampling sites the shrimp lengths variation was not significant, in spite of a very great abundance in Jogo, followed by Nhaduga. Classes with higher frequency range were between 11 and 18 mm. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that juveniles of Fenneropenaeus indicusin the Bay of Inhambane do not remain for a long time in this area. Population structure of the studied species indicated that the amplitude of the variation of the carapace length of the females was between the classes 5 and 29 mm, with molting in classes 10 and 15 mm and with an average value of 15.8 mm while males ranged from 5 to 28 mm with an average value of 15.1 mm. In conclusion the closure season may be stablished for the entire Inhambane Bay, system from October to February, to enable juveniles shrimp to enter the fishing ground, to grow and reach the fishing size to produce sustainable amounts of spawning stock. Abstract in portuguese:O estudo para o estabelecimento do período de veda da pesca artesanal de camarão penaeideo na Baía de Inhambane, província do mesmo nome a sul de Moçambique, foi realizado entre Junho de 2013 e Maio de 2014, abarcando quatro centros de pesca ao longo da Baía, que foram pré-definidos como locais de captura/desembarque de camarão na área de estudo. A obtenção dos espécimens para o trabalho foi feita mediante a aquisição aos pescadores das redes de arrasto para a praia até perfazer um total de 100 indivíduos de cada espécie em cada um dos 2 dias de amostragem, cobrindo períodos de maré viva e morta de cada mês durante 12 meses consecutivos. O objectivo consistiu em estudar aspectos da biologia reprodutiva e estrutura de tamanhos camarão branco (Fenneropenaeus indicus), com vista ao estabelecimento do período de veda para a protecção de juvenis na Baía de Inhambane. Dados mensais extraídos na base de dados da pesca artesanal “Pescart”, ao longo de uma série de cinco anos consecutivos desde 2009, mostraram que Fenneropenaeus indicus dominou as capturas com uma média de mais de 65%. Em todos os locais de amostragem a variação dos comprimentos não foi significante, apesar de se verificar uma abundância muito grande em Jogo, seguida de Nhaduga. As classes com maior frequência estão compreendidas entre 11 e 18 mm, pelo que se pode colocar a hipótese de que os juvenis de Fenneropenaeus indicus na Baía de Inhambane não permanecem durante muito tempo nesta área. A estrutura da população da espécie estudada mostra, que a amplitude da variação do comprimento de carapaça das fêmeas situa-se entre as classes 5 e 29 mm, com modas nas classes 10 e 15 mm e com um valor médio de 15,8 mm enquanto que os machos variam de 5 a 28 mm com um valor médio de 15,1 mm. O período de veda poderá ser definido para toda a Baía de Inhambane a ser implementada a partir do mês de Outubro a Fevereiro, para possibilitar que camarão pequeno que dá entrada nesta área de pesca possa crescer e atingir tamanho maior e produzir quantidades sustentáveis de stock desovante.
