Notizen: Abstract A quantitative analytical method, using a spreadsheet, has been developed that allows the determination of values of the three parameters that characterize the Hubbert-style Gaussian error curve that best fits the conventional oil production data both for the U.S. and the world. The three parameters are the total area under the Gaussian, which represents the estimated ultimate (oil) recovery (EUR), the date of the maximum of the curve, and the half-width of the curve. The “best fit” is determined by adjusting the values of the three parameters to minimize the root mean square deviation (RMSD) between the data and the Gaussian. The sensitivity of the fit to changes in values of the parameters is indicated by an exploration of the rate at which the RMSD increases as values of the three parameters are varied from the values that give the best fit. The results of the analysis are as follows: (1) the size of the U.S. EUR of oil is suggested to be 0.222 × 1012 barrels (0.222 trillion bbl) of which approximately three-fourths appears to have been produced through 1995; (2) if the world EUR is 2.0 × 1012 bbl (2.0 trillion bbl), a little less than half of this oil has been produced through 1995, and the maximum of world oil production is indicated to be in 2004; (3) each increase of one billion barrels in the size of the world EUR beyond the value of 2.0 × 1012 bbl can be expected to result in a delay of approximately 5.5 days in the date of maximum production; (4) alternate production scenarios are presented for world EURs of 3.0 and 4.0 × 1012 bbl.

Notizen: Abstract We prove an existing theorem of homotopic harmonic diffeomorphisms between complete surfaces of finite total curvature and nontrivial genus. This is a generalization of a theorem of Jost and Schoen [4].

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we are going to study the capacity theory and exceptionality of hyperfinite Dirichlet forms. We shall introduce positive measures of hyperfinite energy integrals and associated theory. Fukushima's decomposition theorem will be established on the basis of discussing hyperfinite additive functionals and hyperfinite measures. We shall study the properties of internal multiplicative functionals, subordinate semigroups and subprocesses. Moreover, we shall discuss transformation of hyperfinite Dirichlet forms.

Notizen: Abstract A new procedure is proposed for implicit dynamic analysis using the finite element method. The main aim is to give stable solutions with large time-steps in the presence of significant rigid body motions, in particular rotations. In contrast to most conventional approaches, the time integration strategy is closely linked to the “element technology” with the latter involving a form of co-rotational procedure. For the undamped situation, the solution procedure leads to an algorithm that exactly conserves energy when constant external forces are applied (i.e. with gravity loading).

Notizen: Abstract This paper compares the efficiency of uniform quantization in the spatial domain with frequency dependent quantization in the spatial frequency domain, in the context of the end-to-end performance of visual-communication channels. Results show that the minimum data density required for informationally lossless transmission depends on the design of the image-gathering device. The information in the acquired signal, not the energy, dictates the trade-off between data transmission and visual quality. Frequency dependent quantization that maintains the information capacity of the channel while reducing the entropy of the encoded signal, improves its information efficiency. Information bit-allocation is preferable for optimized visual communication for restoration, whereas energy bit-allocation can be used only for image reconstruction.

Notizen: Abstract Whittaker's reduction method invokes the energy integral to reduce the order of Lagrange's equations of motion of a holonomic dynamical system. This paper treats the corresponding results for a nonholonomic conservative system described by Poincare's equations which are constructed from the standpoint of the theory of Lie groups.

Notizen: Abstract A local field is any locally compact, non-discrete field other than the field of real numbers or the field of complex numbers. There is a natural notion of Gaussian measures on a local field vector space. We construct and study a specific local field Gaussian stochastic process taking values in a finite dimensional local field vector space and indexed by another finite dimensional local field vector space. This process has a structure that strongly reflects the algebraic and geometric structure of the underlying index space and, as such, plays the same role in the local field setting that standard Brownian motion and the related multiparameter processes such as Lévy's multiparameter Brownian motion play in a Euclidean context. We investigate the theory of ‘additive functionals’ and the related potential theory for this process and show that it strongly resembles the Euclidean prototype. As a particular consequence of this investigation, we find that a local time process exists when the process hits points. We give two intrinsic constructions of the local time at a given level. These constructions are analogous to the dilation construction of Kingman and the Hausdorff measure construction of Taylor and Wendel in the Euclidean case. Finally, the local time is shown to be continuous as a measure valued stochastic process indexed by the levèl at which it is evaluated.

Notizen: Abstract The paper discusses long-term trends in relationships between energy use and the overall productive efficiency of the American economy. While total energy consumption grew strongly during the twentieth century, the intensity of energy use (i.e. the energy/GNP ratio) fell persistently much of the time. Thus, there were simultaneous long-term improvements in labor productivity, total factor productivity, and energy productivity. The historical record appears to be at odds with conventional beliefs that gains in productive efficiency depend upon the rising intensity of energy use in production processes. A key role in bringing about these counter-intuitive results is assigned to what is referred to as the energy-technology-productivity nexus, in which the quality of particular energy forms such as electricity and liquid fuels (along with closely linked changes in energy-using technologies) played a critical part in leveraging the overall efficiency of production. As a result of these energy form-dependent improvements in productive efficiency, outputs grew more rapidly than all inputs, including the inputs of energy. The more recent past stands in sharp contrast to the long-term record. While energy efficiency (as measured by energy/GNP) showed strong gains during the late 1970's and early 1980's, the growth in overall productive efficiency was severely retarded. Implications for the future of suggested linkages between the quality of particular energy forms and technological progress are considered.
