    Description: Radio communications in the range of 60 GHz enable multi-Gigabit/s network access in indoor environments. Due to the propagation characteristics of such signals only very short range radio transmission is feasible. In order to distribute these signals across large distances, analog transmission over optical fiber is considered. In this work, mode-locked laser diodes serve as optoelectronic oscillators for the generation of such signals. Their system-relevant properties are studied in detail.

    Description: With forty-two extensively annotated maps, this atlas offers novel insights into the history and mechanics of how Central Europe’s languages have been made, unmade, and deployed for political action. The innovative combination of linguistics, history, and cartography makes a wealth of hard-to-reach knowledge readily available to both specialist and general readers. It combines information on languages, dialects, alphabets, religions, mass violence, or migrations over an extended period of time. The story first focuses on Central Europe’s dialect continua, the emergence of states, and the spread of writing technology from the tenth century onward. Most maps concentrate on the last two centuries. The main storyline opens with the emergence of the Western European concept of the nation, in accord with which the ethnolinguistic nation-states of Italy and Germany were founded. In the Central European view, a “proper” nation is none other than the speech community of a single language. The Atlas aspires to help users make the intellectual leap of perceiving languages as products of human history and part of culture.     Description: Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon.

Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

At the same time, researchers are questioning what the North is, its conceptualisation, its cultural implications, its geographical characteristics, its social and political challenges. This volume is part of the current debate on the Nordic imaginary based on a notion, Nordicity, which intersects with borealism. Plural and mobile, the North inspires both scriptural and figurative production based on desire, dream, fascination or fantasy. The real, tangible and contingent North is only the apparent surface of a manufactured and invented North. How can we express northernness today? Is a theory of the North possible? This volume attempts to answer these questions by bringing together contributions from researchers in Nordic studies, literature, linguistics and the humanities: each is given the opportunity to define his own conception of Nordicity. Ces dernières années, à travers romans et sériés télévisées ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" ou "Occupied"), la culture nordique a gagné en visibilité internationale. Simultanément, les chercheurs s'interrogent sur ce qu’est le Nord, sa conceptualisation, ses implications culturelles, ses caractéristiques géographiques, ses enjeux sociaux et politiques.     Description: In publishing this book, an early version of which was first published under the auspices of the Academy of Athens, the French School at Athens highlights the research work of Aspasia Louvi-Kizi, an eminent specialist in the Frank and Byzantine Peloponnese, whose work reveals all of the complexity of the architectural forms, influences and models at work in the monuments of the medieval Byzantine city of Mystras. Out of all of the architecture created by the despotic couple formed by Manuel Cantacuzène (1349-1380) and his wife Isabelle de Lusignan, who were instrumental in turning Mystras into a centre of power, Aspasia Louvi-Kizi focuses on two of the city’s most iconic monuments, the monasteries of Peribleptos and Pantanassa, proposing a new history of their construction. Their architecture incorporates elements of Frank art, meaning western or gothic art, which were foreign to the local Byzantine tradition. The gothic aspect of Mystras’ architecture, as distinct from the Franco-Byzantine influences in the neighbouring crusader principality of Achaea, has more to do with Western art in Cyprus, and its introduction by Isabelle to the Peloponnese was to prove decisive. The Western elements that decorate the facades of clocks and towers, combined with the Byzantine features to constitute a concrete expression of the despotic couple’s pro-Western politics, in line with the imperial politics of Constantinople at the time. In the fragmented and multipolar world of the Eastern Mediterranean on the eve of the Ottoman conquest, this book highlights the role Mystras played as a centre of power in the region and, in doing so, contributes to a fresh take on the city as a whole. By continuing the international conversation about a renowned site, the French School at Athens shows its commitment to a multi-layered approach that reveals the complexity of the interactions at work in the history of the Greek world in transition.

    Description: The question of how to maintain the continuity of diplomacy while developing democracy without military intervention is an old and new issue. The challenge can be described as a dilemma between democracy and diplomatic coherence. This dilemma is not unique to the twenty-first century; it has been a constant challenge to the development of democracy. In non-Western countries, democratisation originated in the nineteenth century and has had many successes and failures. After the Russo-Japanese War, political parties began to take power in Japan. The best embodiment of diplomacy in Japan's emerging democracy—the development of parliamentary democracy and mass-based democracy—is Shidehara Kijūrō (1872–1951), who served as foreign minister from 1924 to 1927 and from 1929 to 1931, and was prime minister from 1945 to 1946. As a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shidehara had long grappled with the issue of how to ensure diplomatic coherence in modern Japan, which was becoming increasingly democratic. Although Shidehara succeeded to some extent in promoting diplomacy in cooperation with the US and the UK under party politics, the rise of the military after the Manchurian Incident forced him to retire for a period. However, after the Pacific War, Shidehara became prime minister of the US-occupied Japan and attempted to restore cooperative diplomacy under party politics. Shidehara came to the conclusion that the way to achieve both democracy and diplomatic coherence was through nonpartisan diplomacy towards peace. This book examines the tension between diplomacy and democracy, focusing on Shidehara’s life and exploring modern Japan’s footsteps. Shidehara was undoubtedly one of Japan’s most important diplomatic figures.

    Description: "Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe's earliest known printed book—not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl's Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page—over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers' reactions along approved paths. Authors were packaged—and packaged themselves—in word and image to respond to the tension, while leading figures of early modern culture such as Paracelsus, Martin Luther, and Sebastian Brant used printed prophecies for their own purposes in a rapidly changing society. Based on a wide reading of many sources, Printing and Prophecy contributes to the study of early modern literature, including how print changed the relationship among authors, readers, and texts. The prophetic and astrological texts the book examines document changes in early modern society that are particularly relevant to German studies and are key texts for understanding the development of science, religion, and popular culture in the early modern period. By combining the methods of cultural studies and book history, this volume brings a new perspective to the study of Gutenberg and later printers."

    Description: The volume Contro Bernardino. Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Description: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

When alternative delivery periods and split-deliveries are employed, freight forwarders get a wider scope for planning and can therefore plan more efficient routes. Even with few alternative delivery periods, which allow vehicles to be used more efficiently, substantial savings can be achieved.

    Description: The buildings erected in his native city by the Roman emperor Septimius Severus are amongst the most impressive and best-preserved in the Roman world. Because of their unique state of preservation, they give an unparalleled insight into what an architect with an imperial commission could do, when he had the building-materials and technical expertise of the entire empire at his disposal.〈br/>〈br/>The buildings excavated by Italian teams between the two World Wars were examined in detail by Ward-Perkins between 1948 and 1953. The study was never completed in his lifetime, though the drawings and much of the text existed at least in draft form. The present publication puts these in the public domain, together with Ward-Perkins' authoritative insights into the process by which such a grand project was executed.

    Description: St Peter's, Barton-upon-Humber, is a redundant medieval church in the care of English Heritage. As a result of a major program of research carried out between 1978 and 2007, it is now the most intensively studied parish church in the UK. Excavations between 1978 and 1984 investigated most of the interior of the building, as well as a swathe of churchyard around its exterior. At the same time, a stone-by-stone record and detailed archaeological study of the fabric and furnishings of the church was undertaken, continuing down to 2007. The twin aims of the project were to understand the architectural history and setting of this complex, multi-period building (Volume 1, Parts 1 and 2) and to recover a substantial sample of the population for palaeopathological study (Volume 2). An extensive program of historical and topographical research also took place in order to set the archaeological evidence firmly in context.

    Description: "The present work addresses the history of Derecho Indiano (Spanish Colonial Law) and proposes to examine the role played by Indiano-Castilian jurists in the New World as creators and enforcers of a science and the practice of law. They were given the task of organising and developing public authorities as well as the new society, and in their engagement with the temporary institutions, they were confronted with realities and situations as diverse as they themselves proclaimed them to be. The works brought together in this volume originally appeared in journals and collected works from different countries, and they are now being presented here in a revised edition. Castile was the kingdom overseeing the expansion across the Atlantic; an expansion to lands and peoples unknown to Europeans up till that point in time. The jurists who worked under these new and challenging circumstances belonged to the Castilian tradition, and they were immersed in this tradition not only due to their university education, but also as a result of their cultural environment and the very structure of the governing bodies and justice system of the kingdom. The confrontation with a reality that was, in so many respects, different from that of the Peninsular – as could already clearly be seen in accounts written by conquistadors, missionaries and the authorities from the early days – encouraged jurists to search for solutions to the new problems that had arisen. Over the years, this led to the creation of what would eventually shape a heterogeneously composed normative corpus, both in civil and canon terms. The differences between the Indiano and Castilian systems were marked to the point that it became a widely accepted truth that the Indiano order could not be fully understood or taken into account either by the advisors of Castile or the lawyers who travelled to the Americas with no prior knowledge of this particular law. Jurists who were born or based in the Indiano provinces would often come to discover the “constitutional discourse” of the monarchy; in other words, they experienced the unfolding plot, so to speak, not through theory, but rather through the impetus provided by the possible solutions to the numerous issues that had arisen. Although Castilian legal literature, which exerted a powerful influence, was present and being circulated throughout the Americas, preferences when it came to specific authors and legal bodies were as different as the readings and interpretations made of them. Several criteria both general and specific in nature took shape. Consequently, “local contexts”, for example, were often discussed in the application of general norms and the “customary background” was similarly taken into account."

    Description: In 1907, the city of Heredia became the epicenter of the most important religious conflict experienced by Costa Rica in the 20th century. A complaint that the theory of evolution was being taught in the Lyceum (i.e. secondary school) of that city, triggered an increasingly intense confrontation between the Catholic parishioners and the circle of young radical intellectuals articulating around the writer and educator Roberto Brenes Mesén. In the course of this process, Costa Rican society, to the alarm of the government of Cleto González Víquez, was the scene of popular mobilizations in defense of the faith, excommunications and burning of impious texts, while Catholic morality was systematically questioned based on sexual abuse attributed to priests. For a moment, it seemed that the country had gone back in time, and that the ghosts of 1884 were present.

En aquestes cartes trobem en primera persona l’impacte psicològic de la derrota, dels judicis sumaríssims i de l’empresonament, la por i la incertesa de cada dia, la penúria, la privació emocional de l’allunyament de la família, la frustració de no poder exercir cap rol familiar. Alhora, la voluntat de sobreviure física i moralment, que va ser una voluntat política, i els mecanismes i estratègies que van fer que molts ho aconseguissin, des de l’ajut de fora i la solidaritat a dins, fins a la capacitat de cadascú per mantenir alguna il·lusió i la fe en el futur.

    Description: The different theoretical notions and practices of the relations between the state and religious communities in early modern Europe constitute one of the most interesting problems in historiography. Moving away from a simple «toleration» versus «non-toleration» dichotomy, the author sets out to analyse the inter-confessional relations in selected European territories in a «longue duree» perspective, between Reformation and Enlightenment. Outlining the relations between the state and the different Churches (confessions) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, and the Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of «free» (non-absolutist) composite states, where the particularly complex process of defining the raison d’etat determined the level of religious toleration that was politically feasible and socially acceptable.

    Description: The aim of this work was to identify the patterns that can induce heating around implanted cardiac pacemakers during MRI and to develop strategies to counteract them. Two approaches were taken: computer simulations of the occurring electromagnetic field distributions and in-vitro experiments using phantoms in real MRI devices, both for conventional bore-hole and new open MRI systems. Using the open MRI, the observed heating could be reduced significantly.

    Description: This Special Issue covers symmetry and asymmetry phenomena occurring in real-life problems. We invited authors to submit their theoretical or experimental research presenting engineering and economic problem solution models dealing with the symmetry or asymmetry of different types of information. The issue gained interest in the research community and received many submissions. After rigorous scientific evaluation by editors and reviewers, nine papers were accepted and published. The authors proposed different MADM and MODM solution models as integrated tools to find a balance between the components of sustainable global development, to find a symmetry axis concerning goals, risks, and constraints to cope with the complicated problems. Most approaches suggested decision models under uncertainty, combining the usual decision-making methods with interval-valued fuzzy or rough sets theory, also Z numbers. The application fields of the proposed models involved both problems of technological sciences and social sciences. The papers cover three essential areas: engineering, economy, and management. We hope that a summary of the Special Issue as provided here will encourage a detailed analysis of the papers included in the Printed Edition.

    Description: This book is a historical study of the Tajiks in Central Asia from the ancient times to the post-Soviet period. For millennia, these descendants of the original Aryan settlers were part of many different empires set up by Greek, Arab, Turkic and Russian invaders, as well as their own, most notably during the Middle Ages. The emergence of the modern state of Tajikistan began after 1917 under Soviet rule, and culminated in the promulgation of independence from the moribund USSR in 1991. In the subsequent civil war that raged between 1992 and 1997, Tajikistan came close to becoming a failed state. The legacy of that internal conflict remains critical to understanding politics in Tajikistan a generation later. Exploring the patterns of ethnic identity and the exigencies of state formation, the book argues that despite a strong sense of belonging underpinned by shared history, mythology and cultural traits, the Tajiks have not succeeded in forming a consolidated nation. The politics of the Russian colonial administration, the national-territorial delimitation under Stalin, and the Soviet strategy of socio-economic modernisation contributed to the preservation and reification of sub-ethnic cleavages and regional identities. The book demonstrates the impact of region-based elite clans on Tajikistan’s political trajectory in the twilight years of the Soviet era, and identifies objective and subjective factors that led to the civil war. It concludes with a survey of the process of national reconciliation after 1997, and the formal and informal political actors, including Islamist groups, who compete for influence in Tajik society. “Tajikistan: A Political and Social History is the best source of information on this important country in the English language.     Description: This book provides a comparative and transnational examination of the complex and multifaceted experiences of anti-labour mobilisation, from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. It retraces the formation of an extensive market for corporate policing, privately contracted security and yellow unionism, as well as processes of professionalisation in strikebreaking activities, labour espionage and surveillance. It reconstructs the diverse spectrum of right-wing patriotic leagues and vigilante corps which, in support or in competition with law enforcement agencies, sought to counter the dual dangers of industrial militancy and revolutionary situations. Although considerable research has been done on the rise of socialist parties and trade unions the repressive policies of their opponents have been generally left unexamined. This book fills this gap by reconstructing the methods and strategies used by state authorities and employers to counter outbreaks of labour militancy on a global scale. It adopts a long-term chronology that sheds light on the shocks and strains that marked industrial societies during their turbulent transition into mass politics from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. Offering a new angle of vision to examine the violent transition to mass politics in industrial societies, this is of great interest to scholars of policing, unionism and striking in the modern era.

    Description: The proliferation of powerful but cheap devices, together with the availability of a plethora of wireless technologies, has pushed for the spread of the Wireless Internet of Things (WIoT), which is typically much more heterogeneous, dynamic, and general-purpose if compared with the traditional IoT. The WIoT is characterized by the dynamic interaction of traditional infrastructure-side devices, e.g., sensors and actuators, provided by municipalities in Smart City infrastructures, and other portable and more opportunistic ones, such as mobile smartphones, opportunistically integrated to dynamically extend and enhance the WIoT environment. A key enabler of this vision is the advancement of software and middleware technologies in various mobile-related sectors, ranging from the effective synergic management of wireless communications to mobility/adaptivity support in operating systems and differentiated integration and management of devices with heterogeneous capabilities in middleware, from horizontal support to crowdsourcing in different application domains to dynamic offloading to cloud resources, only to mention a few. The book presents state-of-the-art contributions in the articulated WIoT area by providing novel insights about the development and adoption of middleware solutions to enable the WIoT vision in a wide spectrum of heterogeneous scenarios, ranging from industrial environments to educational devices.     Description: Verbrennungsprozesse sind meist mit der Emission von Schadstoffen verbunden, weshalb sie möglichst schadstoffarm und energieeffizient geführt werden müssen.Bei den bislang dominierenden primären Brennstoffen sind aufgrund der gleichbleibenden Brennstoffeigenschaften langfristig optimierte Technologien und feste Regelungen einsetzbar. Zunehmend werden jedoch sekundäre Brennstoffe wie Prozessabgase oder Biomasse genutzt. Sie haben stark veränderliche chemisch-physikalische Eigenschaften und bewirken so einen veränderlichen Verbrennungsablauf der schwierig beherrschbar ist. Eine optimale Verbrennung lässt sich dann nur durch eine an den Verbrennungszustand und die Brennstoffe adaptierte modellbasierte Prozessregelung erreichen, die noch nicht Stand der Technik ist.Die Arbeit widmet sich im ersten Schwerpunkt dem modellbasierten Reglungsentwurf. Die theoretische Modellierung und der modellbasierte Entwurf adaptiver Regelungen für die Temperatur und die Sauerstoffkonzentration im Abgas wird am Beispiel einer halbtechnischen Brennkammer für veränderliche Brenngase analysiert. Berücksichtigt wird dabei das für Verbrennungen typische vorhaltbehaftete Regelstreckenverhalten.Der zweite Schwerpunkt bildet die online Messung und die rechnerba-sierte Auswertung von Zustandsgrößen am Beispiel der infrarotbasierten Temperaturmessung bei einem Feststoffbrennbett. Es werden neue Auswerteverfahren entwickelt, die sich u.a. auch bei der Regelung industrieller Verbrennungen bewährt haben.

    Description: The gas phase direct hydroxylation of benzene into phenol with hydrogen and oxygen, as initially described by Niwa in 2002, was realized in a newly developed double-membrane reactor. In the concept described by Niwa, a dense Pd membrane is used for the (safe) dosage of dissociated hydrogen species into the tubular reaction zone, where it reacts with gas phase oxygen to form surface species capable of directly converting benzene into phenol in a single-step process.

    Description: Research on radiation-tolerant electronics has increased rapidly over the past few years, resulting in many interesting approaches to modeling radiation effects and designing radiation-hardened integrated circuits and embedded systems. This research is strongly driven by the growing need for radiation-hardened electronics for space applications, high-energy physics experiments such as those on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and many terrestrial nuclear applications including nuclear energy and nuclear safety. With the progressive scaling of integrated circuit technologies and the growing complexity of electronic systems, their susceptibility to ionizing radiation has raised many exciting challenges, which are expected to drive research in the coming decade. In this book we highlight recent breakthroughs in the study of radiation effects in advanced semiconductor devices, as well as in high-performance analog, mixed signal, RF, and digital integrated circuits. We also focus on advances in embedded radiation hardening in both FPGA and microcontroller systems and apply radiation-hardened embedded systems for cryptography and image processing, targeting space applications.

For instance, power consumption can be minimized through on-board processing and smart interrogation algorithms, and state detection enhanced through collaboration between sensor nodes.     Description: Dans sa Démonolâtrie (1595), le procureur général de Lorraine, Nicolas Remy, estime que « Les sorciers appartiennent la plupart du temps au monde des bourgs et des campagnes. ». Cependant, les vauderies survenues à Lyon et Arras au XVe siècle comme les cas de possession du XVIIe siècle sont autant de témoignages de la présence de la sorcellerie dans les villes européennes. Les études de cas et les essais comparatifs réunis dans ce volume montrent qu'en dépit de la diversité des sociétés urbaines, la sorcellerie apparaît comme un révélateur des enjeux de pouvoir qui traversent les villes modernes.Dans sa postface, Carlo Ginzburg insiste sur la portée d'une approche comparatiste, toujours attentive aux écarts à la norme, et souligne l'importance d’aborder les procès de sorcellerie comme une manifestation particulière des tensions sociales et culturelles.

    Description: Comprehension of the beating of the human heart is important for cardiac research and will improve many clinical applications. Simulations based on models describing cardiac electro-mechanics can acquire insights into this behavior. This work focuses on the mathematical reconstruction of electrophysiology, excitation conduction, and tension development in the human heart on the cellular and the tissue level. The tissue models represent accurate anatomical shapes of the atria and the ventricles and incorporate electrophysiological heterogeneity and anisotropic conduction. The simulations comprehend the physiological behavior of the ventricles and of the atrium including the sinoatrial node as well as pathological cases like ventricular and atrial fibrillation and genetic defects in ionic channels.

    Description: An Open Access edition of this work is available on Modern Languages Open (https://www.modernlanguagesopen.org/). On 12 March 2018, Mauritius celebrated fifty years as an independent nation amidst much fanfare. Yet behind the nation's official image of multicultural 'unity in diversity' lurk deep socio-economic inequalities and inter-ethnic tensions that are insistently critiqued in its literature. Against this backdrop, this book analyses how the idea of belonging - a sense of attachment to, and identification with, a place or people - is problematised in a range of contemporary francophone Mauritian novels. The island-nation's complex history and the multi-ethnic composition of its modern-day population mean that belonging is a central but fraught issue in both reality and fiction. Waters explores how diverse forms of affirmative, affective belonging intersect with, and are frequently inhibited by, exclusionary 'politics of belonging' at communal, national or international levels. Using an eclectic theoretical approach to the central concept of belonging, Waters offers in-depth textual analyses of novels by leading Mauritian writers Nathacha Appanah, Ananda Devi, Shenaz Patel, Bertrand de Robillard, Amal Sewtohul and Carl de Souza. Despite their thematic and formal diversity, these novels are shown to be characterised by a common rejection of dominant discourses of ethnic, diasporic affiliation and by a common commitment to the ongoing, future-orientated project of Mauritian nationhood. As such, this book offers an original insight into the dynamics of belonging and exclusion in diverse, multi-ethnic societies.

    Description: This volume provides an ambitious synopsis of the complex, colourful world of textiles in ancient Mediterranean iconography. A wealth of information on ancient textiles is available from depictions such as sculpture, vase painting, figurines, reliefs and mosaics. Commonly represented in clothing, textiles are also present in furnishings and through the processes of textile production. The challenge for anyone analysing ancient iconography is determining how we interpret what we see. As preserved textiles rarely survive in comparable forms, we must consider the extent to which representations of textiles reflect reality, and critically evaluate the sources. Images are not simple replicas or photographs of reality. Instead, iconography draws on select elements from the surrounding world that were recognisable to the ancient audience, and reveal the perceptions, ideologies, and ideas of the society in which they were produced. Through examining the durable evidence, this anthology reveals the ephemeral world of textiles and their integral role in the daily life, cult and economy of the ancient Mediterranean.

    Description: In the monography Auf die Tour, I analyze the participation of Jews in popular culture in Vienna, Budapest and New York. I argue that entertainment in vaudevilles was shaped between the perception of difference and similarity, between human trafficking, covert prostitution, anti-Semitism and nationalism. Ultimately, my research shows how a space for Jewish-non-Jewish people was created in the coinciding of the mass migration movement and the emerging mass culture between the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States.

Zwischen Differenzwahrnehmungen und Ähnlichkeitsdenken, zwischen Menschenhandel, verdeckter Prostitution, Antisemitismus und Nationalismus gestaltete sich Unterhaltung in Varietés. Meine Forschung zeigt, wie sich ein Raum für jüdisch-nichtjüdische Begegnungen in der Massenmigrationsbewegung und der entstehenden Massenkultur zwischen der Habsburgermonarchie und den Vereinigten Staaten ergab.

    Description: Au début du siècle dernier, le sultan du Maroc vient de signer un traité qui place désormais son pays sous le protectorat de la France (30 mars 1912). À l’ombre du maréchal Lyautey, un sultan de substitution, totalement soumis aux nouveaux maîtres français, a été proclamé. Cependant, nombreux sont ceux qui, au Maroc, refusent le fait accompli et se révoltent face à la mainmise étrangère sur le pays. Ainsi, dans le Sud marocain, Moulay Ahmed el Hiba, fils d’un marabout ouest-saharien (Ma el Aïnin), se fait proclamer sultan du Jihad en 1912 ; une première fois à Tiznit, la seconde à Marrakech. Ces événements ont donné naissance à un mouvement qui pendant plus de vingt ans (1912-1934) symbolisera pour ces populations berbères et ouest-sahariennes la résistance à l’avancée inéluctable des troupes coloniales françaises et espagnoles. Fondée sur une analyse croisée d’archives inédites, aussi bien françaises que marocaines, l’auteur fait la lumière sur un événement fondateur de la conquête coloniale du Maroc. Mythifiée, récupérée ou occultée, la figure fondatrice du mouvement hibiste est encore aujourd’hui le sujet d’un conflit mémoriel ayant pour objet l’Ouest saharien.

    Description: Terre de mélanges culturels et de politiques coloniales, la Tunisie a attiré de l’Europe des courants d’immigrations aussi bien que des visées impérialistes. La trajectoire des Juifs italiens, dits Livournais, s’inscrit au carrefour de ces axes. Une communauté enracinée en Tunisie depuis le xviie siècle, mais toujours assimilée au monde européen. Une population cosmopolite, mais jalousement attachée à Livourne et à l’Italie. Une double minorité, à l’égard tant de la nombreuse population juive locale que des cent mille émigrés italiens vivant en Tunisie au début du xxe siècle, mais toujours caractérisée par une forte identité collective. Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, la place sociale de cette communauté fut remise en cause par une série de phénomènes convergents : l’essor du nationalisme tunisien, les tensions diplomatiques italo-françaises, et surtout par la montée au pouvoir du régime fasciste, résolu à encadrer les communautés d’émigration dans sa politique impériale. Sur la base de fonds d’archives et de témoignages inédits, ce travail reconstruit le parcours des Juifs italiens de Tunisie face aux stratégies de fascisation de Rome, en interrogeant les croisements identitaires dans les contextes d’émigration, la question de l’adhésion de masse au totalitarisme et le poids des médiateurs au sein des sociétés coloniales.

    Description: Several in-depth studies have verified the positive impact of lean techniques on performance indicators in production environments. Studies performed on warehouse environments have partially confirmed this. This thesis helped to close the gap between the disparities in the level of evidence mentioned above. A study was conducted that included 16 warehouses in an observation group and 56 warehouses in a control group. These significant results help close the gap in the evidence.

    Description: This work presents investigates the feasibility of the ""directly steered wheels (DSW)"" under operating condition of tramcars. After analyzing the wheel/rail geometric contact between track and DSW, a mathematical model has been developed to describe the lateral dynamics. Based on this model, a robust guidance controller is designed according to the µ-synthesis. The results of simulations show that the DSW with the designed controller can improve the running performance of tramcars significantly.

Hierbei spielten die Republik der Vereinigten Niederlande diplomatisch und die Amsterdamer Finanzhäuser ökonomisch eine viel zu lang unterschätzte Rolle. In einer Nahbetrachtung der diplomatischen und finanztechnischen Aktionen der beteiligten Diplomaten, Politiker und Kaufleute und ihrer jeweiligen Einschätzungen durch Roland Richter wird die Komplexität des historischen Prozesses erkennbar und ein weiterführender Beitrag zur transatlantischen Niederlandeforschung geleistet.

Focusing on a set of Jewish communities, Robert Chazan tells how, by the eleventh century, French Jews had created for themselves a role as local merchants and moneylenders in adapting to the political, economic, and social limits imposed on them. French society, striving to become more powerful and civilized, was willing to extend aid and protection to the Jews in return for general stimulation of trade and urban life and for the immediate profit realized from taxation. While the authorities were relatively successful in protecting the Jews from others, there was no power to impose itself between the Jews and their protectors. The political and social well-being of the Jews was, therefore, dependent on the will of the governing authorities who taxed their holdings and regulated their activities. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the position of the Jews was constantly under attack by reform elements in the church concerned with Jewish moneylending and blasphemous materials in Jewish books; these reformers were eventually devoted to a serious missionizing effort within the Jewish community. The Jews' situation was further complicated by deep popular animosity, expressing itself in a damaging set of slanders and occasionally in physical violence. Despite the impressive achievements of the Jews in medieval northern France, by the thirteenth century their community was increasingly constricted; and in 1306, they were expelled from royal France by Philip IV. Overcoming the handicap of a lack of copious source material, Chazan analyzes the Jews' political status, their relations with key elements of Christian society, their demographic development, their economic outlets, their internal organization, and their attitudes toward the Christian environment. As it highlights aspects of French society from an unusual perspective, Medieval Jewry in Northern France should be of special interest to the historian of medieval France as well as to the student of Jewish history. This story is also significant for all who are fascinated by the capacity of human groups to respond and adapt creatively to a hostile and limiting environment.

Dabei entsteht intermediär ein Gel. Mit dieser Arbeit wird ein Beitrag zur Steuerung der Eigenschaften des Produktpulvers geleistet. Es wird eine Formel vorgestellt, mit der die Gelierzeit aus den Konzentrationen der Einsatzstoffe abgeschätzt werden kann. Für die Fragmentierung des Gels werden Parallelen zum Aufbruch hochviskoser Tropfen gezeigt.

    Description: The bioeconomy initially focused on resource substitution, including the production of biomass from various resources; its conversion, fractionation, and processing by means of biotechnology; and chemistry and process engineering towards the production and marketing of food, feed, fuel, and fibre. Nevertheless, although resource substitution is still considered important, the emphasis has been recently shifted to the biotechnological innovation perspective of the bioeconomy, in terms that ensure environmental sustainability. It is estimated that around one-third of the food produced for human consumption is wasted throughout the world, posing not only a sustainability problem related to food security but also a significant environmental problem. Food waste streams, mainly derived from fruits and vegetables, cereals, oilseeds, meat, dairy, and fish processing, have unavoidably attracted the interest of the scientific community as an abundant reservoir of complex carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and functional compounds, which can be utilized as raw materials for added-value product formulations. This Special Issue focuses on innovative and emerging food and by-products processing methods for the sustainable transition to a bioeconomy era.

    Description: The aim of the present work is to describe the deformation and fracture behavior of single crystal tungsten at the microscopic scale by using the ?nite element method. Therefore, the studies focus mainly on the in?uence of crystal orientation as well as the investigation of crack initiation and crack propagation. With a defined crack propagation model, the simulations of microbending allows for evaluating the details of the fracture process more accurately and supported the experimental studies.

    Description: This social, cultural, and political history of Slavic Muslim women of the Yugoslav region in the first decades of the post-Ottoman era is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues confronting these women. It is based on a study of voluntary associations (philanthropic, cultural, Islamic-traditionalist, and feminist) of the period. It is broadly held that Muslim women were silent and relegated to a purely private space until 1945, when the communist state “unveiled” and “liberated” them from the top down.  After systematic archival research in Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, and Austria, Fabio Giomi challenges this view by showing:  How different sectors of the Yugoslav elite through association publications, imagined the role of Muslim women in post-Ottoman times, and how Muslim women took part in the construction or the contestation of these narratives.  How associa­tions employed different means in order to forge a generation of “New Muslim Women” able to cope with the post-Ottoman political and social circumstances.  And how Muslim women used the tools provided by the associations in order to pursue their own projects, aims and agendas.  The insights are relevant for today’s challenges facing Muslim women in Europe. The text is illustrated with exceptional photographs.
