Notizen: Abstract O2 exposure of polycrystalline nickel at 300 K results in characteristics changes of secondary ion emission. These can be described by a model which is in good agreement with corresponding LEED, AES, XPS, and ΔΦ results of other authors. According to this model, oxygen can be bonded on Ni in at least five different phases: 1) chemisorption, indicated by a rapid increase of Ni+, Ni 2 + , and Ni2O+ (≦5 L); 2) a rearranged chemisorption layer, characterized by a drastic decrease of Ni+, Ni 2 + , and Ni2O+ (5–15 L); 3) nickel oxide (NiO) responsible for a strong NiO−- and NiO 2 − -emission (≦40 L); 4) oxygen on top of this NiO layer, producing a final increase of Ni+ and NiO+ and a O2-flash signal at 400 K (〉40 L); 5) bulk dissolved oxygen in thermal equilibrium with a chemisorption layer (after several exposure/heating cycles). During ion bombardment of a 100 L O2 exposed Ni surface these different binding states occur in a reversed order of succession. O2-flash signals at 400 and 1100 K, related to drastic changes in secondary ion emission at 400, 700, and 1100 K, reflect the disappearance of various oxygen binding states. The exchange between different oxygen phases was studied by16O2/18O2 isotope experiments.

Notizen: Abstract It is found that a large number of metal hydrides such as hydrides of materials in Ca−Mg−Ni can form water when exposed to O2 largely without signs for concomitant substrate oxidation. One can speak of a catalytic reaction in this connection as the H-depleted metal matrix can in most cases be rehydrided and water synthesis repeated on exposure to O2. In some cases a considerable portion of the H combustion reaction takes place in a matter of seconds. Some of the metal hydrides such as hydrides of CaNi4B, CeNi3, and YbNi2, are relatively stable concerning decomposition of the alloy by the product water, while others, for example hydrides of CaNi3, and CaNi2, are rapidly decomposed by the product water forming the hydroxide of the electropositive metal. They also produce fine ferromagnetic Ni-particles which could be interesting for other catalytic purposes.

Notizen: Abstract Auger analysis and reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) have been used to study the UHV thermal cleaning procedure of different chemically treated (001) GaAs surfaces when heated in ultra high vacuum. It is shown that the ultimate surface composition of the substrate critically depends on the nature and the thickness of the oxide layer formed during chemical treatment. The oxygen removal mechanism has been studied and a comparative analysis of AES and RHEED observations has been drawn. A low residual carbon coverage cleaning procedure is fully investigated and it results that a carbon coverage as low as ∼6×10−2 monolayer induces surface faceting by heating the GaAs substrate at temperatures higher than 570°C. A (001) GaAs surface heated in an arsenic flux up to 570°C is As-stabilized and (411) facets appear at a temperature ranged between 575 and 585°C.

Notizen: Abstract The physical causes of multiple peaks obversed in thermal desorption spectra are investigated using chemical rate equations and a two binding site model. An exclusion term is introduced which adds the repulsive adatom-adatom hard sphere interactions into the rate equations. Finally, using a fundamental statistical mechanical approach it is demonstrated how general adatom-adatom interactions can be incorporated into the expression for the surface delay time.

Notizen: Abstract The desorption kinetics of dissociatively chemisorbed diatomic molecules are examined from a kinetic-modeling point of view. A comparison is made between a one-step process, resulting in the usual second-order kinetics, and a two-step process which takes into account explicity recombination of atoms and subsequent desorption of molecules. The kinetics from the two-step mechanism are found to be equivalent to second-order desorption with a coverage-dependent activation energy which, in many cases, is a linear function of coverage. The two-step process leads to second-order kinetics with a constant activation energy only for special values of the model rate parameters, or if chemisorption is activated. The steady onate approximation for the intermediate in the two-step process is often adequate, but the transient period during which a steady state is reached also contains important kinetic information. The implications of these results for desorption kinetics and molecular beam reaction experiments are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Measurements were made on a low-energy positron beam apparatus in an attempt to increase the efficiency of the slow positron yield from radioisotopes. A study was made to sweep thermalized positrons to the surface of a silicon wafer with an applied electric field at 298 and 140 K. Temperature studies were also made on more conventional Pt and Pt+MgO powder moderators and the results are discussed. The role of the MgO powder has been clarified, though fundamental questions remain. The positron apparatus beam and relevant information regarding sources, temperature and magnetic fields are discussed in sufficient detail so that such a slow positron beam utilizing a “conventional” slow positron moderator could be easily duplicated for use in solid state studies.

Notizen: Abstract The desorption of Pb from MBE-grown {100} GaAs surfaces has been investigated using modulated-beam mass spectrometry, isothermal desorption rate measurements and temperature programmed thermal desorption spectroscopy. The results are in general agreement with a model in which desorption occurs from a disperse phase which is in equilibrium with adsorbate islands. From the independence of the activation energy of desorption on coverage from 〈10−3 s monolayers to several tens of monolayers, single atom desorption is the probable rate limiting step. An important conclusion is that it is not possible to perform a unique analysis of temperature programmed desorption data from condensed films without prior knowledge of the dependence of the desorption activation energy on coverage.

Notizen: Abstract The proton conductivity in H3OUO2AsO4·3H2O (HUAs) has been measured below the transition temperature at 299 K. A consistent picture of the elementary process taking place is developed from separate electrochemical, spectroscopic and calorimetric measurements. The conductivity is proposed to occur by the “vehicle mechanism” of proton transport, i.e. the cooperative motion of H3O+ and H2O. This mechanism is compared with the Grotthuss and the simple ion hopping mechanism.

Notizen: Abstract The laser-induced etching of ceramic PbTi1−xZrxO3 in a hydrogen atmosphere and in air has been investigated. Visible Ar+ and Kr+ laser radiation was employed in most of the experiments. In H2 atmosphere, regular patterning of the ceramic is possible. Average etch rates reach up to about 250 μm/s.

Notizen: Abstract Rotational and vibrational population distributions have been determined for D2 molecules recombinatively desorbing from polycrystalline Pd surfaces by tunable vacuum-ultraviolet laser-induced fluorescence. In the temperature range 550 K≦T s ≦1050 K studied in this work a rotational temperature ofT rot ∼ 450 K was found, nearly independent of the surface temperature. Similarly, the vibrational temperature could be described by a value ofT vib∼1100 K, being always higher than the surface temperature.
