    Beschreibung: The increasing use of automated laser welding processes causes high demands on process monitoring. This work demonstrates methods that use a camera mounted on the focussing optics to perform pre-, in-, and post-process monitoring of welding processes. The implementation uses machine learning methods. All algorithms consider the integration into industrial processes. These challenges include a small database, limited industrial manufacturing inference hardware, and user acceptance.

    Trajectory optimization based on recursive B-spline approximation for automated longitudinal control of a battery electric vehicle (2024)

    Beschreibung: This work describes a method for weighted least squares approximation of an unbounded number of data points using a B-spline function. The method can shift the bounded B-spline function definition range during run-time. The approximation method is used for optimizing velocity trajectories for an electric vehicle with respect to travel time, comfort and energy consumption. The trajectory optimization method is extended to a driver assistance system for automated vehicle longitudinal control.

    Beschreibung: In this work, the first simulation model of oxygen depolarized cathodes (ODC), which are silver catalyst-based gas diffusion electrodes, is presented that considers the phase equilibrium of the gas-liquid interface and structure-related inhomogeneities in electrolyte distribution. By means of the model it has been identified that mass transport of water and ions in the liquid phase is a crucial factor for electrode performance and how it is influenced by the electrode structure.

As they can amplify forecast errors and project them onto the Rossby wave pattern, they are of high relevance for numerical weather prediction. This work elaborates on two aspects of WCBs in the context of ensemble forecasts: (1) sensitivities of WCBs to the representation of initial condition and model uncertainties, and (2) the role of WCBs for forecast error growth.

    Beschreibung: Computational homogenization permits to capture the influence of the microstructure on the cyclic mechanical behavior of polycrystalline metals. In this work we investigate methods to compute Laguerre tessellations as computational cells of polycrystalline microstructures, propose a new method to assign crystallographic orientations to the Laguerre cells and use Bayesian optimization to find suitable parameters for the underlying micromechanical model from macroscopic experiments.

For simulations on the component scale, multi-scale methods may exploit this microstructural information. This work is devoted to a multi-scale approach for brittle materials. Based on a homogenization result for free discontinuity problems, we present FFT-based methods to compute the effective crack energy of heterogeneous materials with complex microstructures.

This work presents the first design and construction of a multi-frequency / multi-purpose coaxial-cavity pre-prototype gyrotron operating at (136)/170/204 GHz with an output power of 2 MW. It is the first step towards operating frequencies up to 240 GHz using the coaxial-cavity gyrotron technology.

    Beschreibung: This work presents model-based algorithmic approaches for interference-invariant time delay estimation, which are specifically suited for the estimation of small time delay differences with a necessary resolution well below the sampling time.     Beschreibung: Microwave-assisted alkaline hydrolysis of PET can be 20 times faster and at lower temperatures. This work presents a novel industrial microwave applicator at 2.45 GHz with homogeneous distribution to support this reaction, which allows an efficient and continuous operation. In addition, an innovative dielectric and calorimetric measurements setup is presented. Furthermore, the modelling of the reaction kinetics based on the measured dielectric parameters is presented.

    Beschreibung: We investigate deep material networks (DMN). We lay the mathematical foundation of DMNs and present a novel DMN formulation, which is characterized by a reduced number of degrees of freedom. We present a efficient solution technique for nonlinear DMNs to accelerate complex two-scale simulations with minimal computational effort. A new interpolation technique is presented enabling the consideration of fluctuating microstructure characteristics in macroscopic simulations.

Small manure and large-scale biowaste plants are currently the most economically attractive installations whereas the valorization of energy crops turns out to be unprofitable. Future developments are assessed with the help of a regional optimization model under constraints. Capacity expansion concerns small-scale manure and biowaste installations rather than plants based on energy crops.

    Beschreibung: During the evolvement of autonomous driving technology, obtaining reliable 3-D environmental information is an indispensable task in approaching safe driving. The operational behavior of automotive radars can be precisely evaluated in a virtual test environment by modeling its surrounding, specifically vulnerable road users (VRUs). Such a realistic model can be generated based on the radar cross section (RCS) and Doppler signatures of a VRU. Therefore, this work proposes a high-resolution RCS measurement technique to determine the relevant scattering points of different VRUs.

Tortuosity factor, facies, porosity and cementation factor constitute major uncertainties in the generated 3-D static model of the Niger Delta Basin. Reservoir quality in the Dahomey Basin is mainly controlled by detrital matrix, carbonate cement, and iron oxide and iron oxyhydroxide cements.

    Beschreibung: This work develops a motion planner that compensates the deficiencies from perception modules by exploiting the reaction capabilities of a vehicle. The work analyzes present uncertainties and defines driving objectives together with constraints that ensure safety. The resulting problem is solved in real-time, in two distinct ways: first, with nonlinear optimization, and secondly, by framing it as a partially observable Markov decision process and approximating the solution with sampling.

    Beschreibung: This study systematically investigates the representation of warm conveyor belts (WCBs) in large reforecast data sets of different numerical weather prediction models and evaluates the role of WCBs for the onset and life cycle of Atlantic-European weather regimes. The results emphasize the importance of accurate forecast of WCBs for sub-seasonal prediction on time scales beyond two weeks and tie the low forecast skill of blocked weather regimes over Europe to misrepresented WCBs.

The biosensor is designed using a mathematical model to investigate the sensitivity of the waveguides. A new class of integrated laser sources for visible wavelengths is being investigated for the first time for light coupling into the waveguides. The functionality of the waveguide-based biosensor chip is successfully demonstrated by detection experiments.

    Beschreibung: Effective mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites strongly depend on the microstructure, including the fibers' orientation. Studying this dependency, we identify the variety of fiber orientation tensors up to fourth-order using irreducible tensors and material symmetry. The case of planar fiber orientation tensors, relevant for sheet molding compound, is presented completely. Consequences for the reconstruction of fiber distributions and mean field homogenization are presented.

    Beschreibung: The transport of bacteria in turbulent river-like environments is addressed, where bacterial populations are frequently encountered attached to solids. This transport mode is investigated by studying the transient settling of heavy particles in turbulent channel flows featuring sediment beds. A numerical method is used to fully resolve turbulence and finite-size particles, which enables the assessment of the complex interplay between flow structures, suspended solids and river sediment.

In this work, perovskite solution films drying in laminar and slot-jet air flows are investigated extensively by optical in situ characterization. The main results are a quantitative model of perovskite drying dynamics and a novel in situ imaging technique – yielding valuable predictions for large-scale perovskite fabrication.

    Beschreibung: In this study the technical and economic feasibility of a 380 kV, 5 kA resistive type superconducting fault current limiter was investigated. Conceptual designs were developed with superconducting tapes cooled by liquid nitrogen and arranged in bifilar coils. A cryostat was designed using FEM simulations taking into account the non-linear voltage distribution. For the complete system including current limiting reactors and cooling system, the investment and operation costs were calculated.

Moreover, I propose a framework that generalizes both data-flow analysis on control-flow graphs and slicing on PDGs. This framework can be used to systematically derive data-flow-like analyses on PDGs that go beyond slicing. I demonstrate that data-flow analysis can be systematically applied to PDGs and show the practicability of my approach.

    Beschreibung: Elastocaloric cooling is an emerging solid-state cooling technology with the potential to provide environmentally friendly, efficient cooling. The elastocaloric effect in superelastic shape memory alloy films is used to develop advanced cooling devices for small-scale applications. Cascaded and parallelized devices are developed to increase device temperature span and cooling capacity. The concepts are proven experimentally, a maximum temperature span of 27° C is achieved in a cascaded device.

    Beschreibung: August Ludwig Hülsen (1765-1809) was a contributor to the emergence of German idealism. Notwithstanding, his name and works are up to this day almost entirely unknown to most scholars in the field. This monograph discusses the historical importance of Hülsen's Prüfung der von der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin aufgestellten Preisfrage: Was hat die Metaphysik seit Leibniz und Wolf für Progressen gemacht? (1796), his only book, for the emergence of German idealism, especially the thought of Reinhold and Fichte during the 1790's. The usual way of focusing on the Wissenschaftslehre, and hence, on the emergence of German idealism, is as a “response” of Fichte to the skeptical objections of Schulze-Aenesidemus to Reinhold's early Elementarphilosophie. This “response”, as Fichte himself recognized in 1798, was far from complete. Hülsen, a Fichtean thinker, restructured and regrounded those aspects of Reinhold's system that Fichte left intact: in particular, Reinhold's almost forgotten approach to the rational history of philosophy. In 1797, Hülsen's achievement prompted Fichte's recommendation of Hülsen's book in Annalen des philosophischen Tons as an introduction to his Wissenschaftslehre. This indicates that Fichte recognized Hülsen as a partner in the development of his incomplete system. Accordingly, the historical importance of Hülsen's book is that it completed Fichte's attempt to overcome Reinhold's standpoint and contributed to the emergence of German idealism.

    Beschreibung: The essays collected in this volume explore some of the themes that have been at the centre of recent debates within Wittgensteinian scholarship. This book is an attempt to express the difficult nature of ethics, mysticism and religion, their problematic status in the modern world, and the possible justifications for ethical and religious commitment. Naturally, it also discusses some of the main ideas of Ludwig Wittgenstein. His very personal and often aphoristic way of writing cannot simply be restated or interpreted. However, his philosophy is in need of interpretation, and interpretations are — as we all know — often rather controversial. The collected contributions aim, therefore, at bringing new insight into the essence of Wittgenstein‘s ethical and religious beliefs by understanding his concepts of thought and language in a more detailed way. In opposition to what we are tentatively inclined to think, the articles of this volume invite us to understand that our need to grasp the essence of ethical and religious thought and language will not be achieved by metaphysical theories expounded from such a point of view, but by focusing on our everyday forms of expression. The articles have in common an understanding of Wittgenstein as not proposing metaphysical theories, but rather showing us the way to work ourselves out of the confusions we become entangled in when philosophizing. Thus, the authors show from a Wittgensteinian perspective that the standard modern approaches to ethics cannot justify traditional moral beliefs.

    Beschreibung: This work presents the development and application of high-speed fluorescent thermal imaging for quench analysis in high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Using a fluorescent coating, with a temperature-dependent light emission, temperature changes can be calculated over 2D surfaces. The technique uncovered peculiar transient effects in novel HTS tape architectures and also helped to verify and better understand hot spot development in both insulated and non-insulated, HTS–wound pancake coils.

    Beschreibung: This work presents a design approach that links fatigue resistance of cast steel component to permissible defect sizes. It is based on fractures mechanics, is in line with experiences of the last 60 years and validated by extensive experimental as well as numerical investigations on different scales and under consideration of real casting defects. By following established assessment methods, the design concept is adapted to practical building applications.

    Beschreibung: In this work, the task of wide-area indoor people detection in a network of depth sensors is examined. In particular, we investigate how the redundant and complementary multi-view information, including the temporal context, can be jointly leveraged to improve the detection performance. We recast the problem of multi-view people detection in overlapping depth images as an inverse problem and present a generative probabilistic framework to jointly exploit the temporal multi-view image evidence.

Water added to silica glass increases its specific volume so that the silica expands near the surface. Mechanical boundary conditions give rise for compressive “swelling stresses”. This fact provides a tool for the interpretation of many experimental observations from literature.

    Beschreibung: Diffractive lens arrays are proposed in this work for application in reflected-light confocal microscopes. They have overcome the limitations between fields of view and resolution of traditional objectives. Experiments of multi-spot confocal imaging in surface metrology and fluorescence microscopy have been demonstrated based on the proposed concepts, which have shown capabilities of high-resolution measurement over a large area.

The proposed definition does not only provide a strong notion of security and privacy, but also covers features which are important for practical use. An efficient realization is presented and proven to fulfill the proposed definition. The resulting building block is the first one that allows for anonymous two-way transactions, has semi-offline capabilities, yields constant storage size, and is provably secure.

    Beschreibung: The atrial substrate undergoes electrical and structural remodeling during atrial fibrillation. Detailed multiscale models were used to study the effect of structural remodeling induced at the cellular and tissue levels. Simulated electrograms were used to train a machine-learning algorithm to characterize the substrate. Also, wave propagation direction was tracked from unannotated electrograms. In conclusion, in silico experiments provide insight into electrograms' information of the substrate.

    Beschreibung: Effective heat transport systems in aerospace are based on multiphase loop heat pipes (LHPs). For a precise thermal control of the electronics, electrical heaters are additionally used to control the operating temperature of the LHP. This work focusses on the dynamical modeling and model-based control design for LHP-based heat transport systems. The results of this work can be used for the optimization of current control parameters and the efficient control design for future LHP applications.

    Beschreibung: In this work, spatio-spectrally coded multispectral light fields, as taken by a light field camera with a spectrally coded microlens array, are investigated. For the reconstruction of the coded light fields, two methods, one based on the principles of compressed sensing and one deep learning approach, are developed. Using novel synthetic as well as a real-world datasets, the proposed reconstruction approaches are evaluated in detail.

    Beschreibung: An innovative strengthening technique for the seismic retrofitting of masonry buildings is the fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM). The system presented in this work is EQ-GRID, which consists of a multi-axial hybrid grid made of alkali-resistant glass and polypropylene fibres and a natural hydraulic lime mortar (NHL) as matrix. The results of the performed experimental campaign and the numerical modelling with the Equivalent frame method are presented and discussed in this work.

The multi-frequency and multi-GNSS PPP phase bias estimation and ambiguity resolution, which is accomplished by a unified model based on the uncombined PPP, are thoroughly evaluated with special focus on Galileo and BDS.
