    Description: This work presents methods for using the ceramic glow plug as a sensor element. This means that the ceramic glow plug will not only perform its conventional task as a heating element but will also provide information, such as motor speed, from the combustion chamber as a sensor. The main focus will be on the change in resistance, particularly under the influence of a temperature change, in the immediate vicinity of the ceramic glow plug.

    Description: The quasi-n-level operation of the flying capacitor converter (FCCs) is an optimized operation mode of a multilevel converter. The quasi-n-level operation of a multilevel converter was presented with an analysis of its advantages and disadvantages. For the Q2LB of the FCC, the theory as well as the control, modulation and balancing algorithms are presented. A medium voltage prototype was built to validate the theory.

    Description: Interaction with dynamic image content is challenging for user perception, cognition and motor action. This dissertation identifies appropriate gaze-based interaction techniques for moving object selection in image sequences using multiple cross-sectional and one longitudinal user study. Further investigations evaluate how gaze-based interaction and automated image exploitation algorithms support human video exploitation as well as whether gaze-based user task classification is feasible.

    Description: This work presents a physically motivated model for predicting the current/voltage behavior of PEM fuel cells. Extensive impedance measurements and DRT analyses were used to identify and quantify all loss processes. The developed model was successfully validated and provides insights into the internal processes of the fuel cell. It enables targeted optimization and shows great potential for increasing the performance of PEM fuel cells.

    Description: Within the scope of the present work, extensive experimental and numerical investigations are carried out on the crack propagation behaviour in steel plates under cyclic loading, which have been reinforced with adhesively bonded CFRP lamellas, as well as on the load-bearing and failure behaviour of CFRP-steel double-lap joints. Based on the results, a fracture mechanics engineering procedure for estimating the remaining service life of CFRP-reinforced steel plates is developed and validated.

    Description: Ellipsometry is a measuring method for surface characterization and thin-film measurement of flat surfaces using polarized light. However, a new measuring principle based on return-path ellipsometry and retroreflection enables the detection of free-form surfaces. This new measurement principle and related questions regarding the measurement function, evaluation algorithms and ambiguities as well as degrees of freedom of the solution set are examined in this work.

    Description: In this work, silicon nitride/silicon carbide composites are manufactured and characterized for tribologically highly stressed applications. The characterization of the composite materials shows the influence of the silicon carbide content on the resulting microstructure and the mechanical properties. The friction properties of the composite materials were characterized in tribological experiments. The composites show very good friction and wear behavior.

    Description: With the introduction of highly automated assistance systems in passenger cars, the requirements for the reliability of the electrical power supply increase significantly. In this thesis, a method for evaluating the reliability of the electrical power supply in automotive pre-development is presented and applied. As a result, it could be shown that the classical electrical power supply is not suitable for supplying highly automated assistance systems.

    Description: For the first time new connectors were realized using densified veneer wood (DVW). Initially, the DVW surface was modified to increase the friction between the connector and the timber part in the shear plane and thus significantly increase the load-carrying capacity of the connection. Friction tests were carried out to determine the friction coefficients of the surfaces. Based on the friction tests, the behavior of the surfaces in combination with inclined screws was investigated.

    Description: Carsharing kann wesentlich zur Reduzierung privater PKW beitragen. Dennoch verharrt es in der Nische. Die vorliegende Arbeit sucht nach den Gründen des Nischendaseins und dies mit Fokus auf unterschiedliche Stakeholdergruppen. Neben der Darstellung der Einflusswirkungen sowie deren Einordnung und Auswertung auf der Grundlage des Stakeholder Salience Modell von Mitchell et al. gibt der Autor Handlungsempfehlungen, wie es zu einer Ausweitung des Carsharing in Deutschland kommen kann. Car sharing can contribute significantly to reducing the number of private cars. Nevertheless, it remains in the niche. This work looks for the reasons for this niche existence and does so with a focus on different stakeholder groups. In addition to the presentation of the effects of influence as well as their classification and evaluation on the basis of the Stakeholder Salience Model by Mitchell et al., the author gives recommendations for action on how an expansion of car sharing in Germany can be achieved.

    Description: The adhesion of encapsulation materials is an dendrimental factor for the robustness and functionality of a power electronic device. In this work the adhesion of ceramic potting materials was developed. A new primer was invented, that enabled high shear strengths even at high temperatures for short times. Furthermore, a completely new potting material was invented on the basis of alkoxysilanes. Especially MTES showed beneficial properties for the adhesion under temperature load.

Individual building phases of the tower are presented by means of collecting and analysing thousands of stonemason's marks appearing on the tower in multiple perspective illustrations. The three-dimensional reconstruction of the design drawing of a more than 700-year-old vellum plan vividly demonstrates that many ideas of the complex Gothic tower construction were already present in the planning.

    Description: Mit Schmerzen der unterschiedlichsten Art ist jeder Mensch mehr oder minder vertraut. Sie zumindest gelegentlich zu empfinden, ist offenbar eine Bedingung menschlicher Existenz. Diese Arbeit beleuchtet den Schmerz nicht nur als ein medizinisches, sondern auch als ein kulturelles Phänomen. Sie knüpft an die Aufsätze und Vorträge Viktor von Weizsäckers an, der dieses Phänomen in seiner medizinischen Anthropologie zu erhellen unternommen hat. Im Vordergrund stehen Weizsäckers Stücke einer medizinischen Anthropologie. Die Entwicklung des Weizsäckerschen Schmerzkonzepts in den Aufsätzen „Die Schmerzen“ (1926), „Zur Klinik der Schmerzen“ (1936) und „Das Mißliche am Schmerz“ (1951) wurden als Teil dieser Arbeit bereits im Balint Journal (Balint 2014; 15(03): 63-72) veröffentlicht. Zentraler Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist die aktuelle Bedeutung, die dem Schmerzbegriff in Viktor von Weizsäckers medizinischer Anthropologie vor dem Hintergrund des heutigen Forschungsstandes noch gegeben werden kann. Dabei wird auch die Frage nach den Grenzen des Konzeptes der medizinischen Anthropologie und ihrer „biographischen Methode“ aufgeworfen.

Der erste Band der Reihe »Kulturelle Überlieferung - digital« diskutiert unter Beteiligung namhafter Experten aus Wissenschaft und Praxis zentrale Aspekte, Probleme und Konsequenzen, die im Zusammenhang mit Digitalisierung und Bewahrung des digitalen kulturellen Erbes stehen. Damit leistet er disziplinübergreifend eine erste Annäherung an das große Themenfeld der digitalen kulturellen Überlieferung.

    Description: Die vorliegenden Essays behandeln im Stil der integrierten Bild-Text-Interpretation ausgewählte typische Bildquellen der entwickelten Massenkonsumgesellschaft von Kalenderblättern über Werbung bis Quartettkarten in dem Bemühen, sie durch Fragen nach ihrer Bedeutung für die Identitätskonstruktion ihrer Zielgruppen in den Kontext der Zeit einzuordnen. Es geht darum, den Gesichtspunkt der Massenhaftigkeit in die Deutung einer Quelle einzubeziehen, ihr ,soziales Leben' u.a. durch ein Aufzeigen der Bildroutinen und Genrehaftigkeit der Texte sowie der Strategien von Werbung als Bestandteil der identitätsstiftenden Bedeutung von Technik für uns sichtbar zu machen. Der ausgewählte Zeitraum mit einem Schwerpunkt in den 1920er bis 1960er Jahren spiegelt die technik- wie gesellschaftsgeschichtlich anerkannte Tatsache, dass diese Jahrzehnte eine Achsenzeit insbesondere der Mobilitätstechnik, aber auch auch der ,Demokratisierung' von Technik für alle in der Konsumgesellschaft darstellen. Daher kommt den beiden Mobilitätstechniken Eisenbahn und Auto besondere Bedeutung zu, mit einem deutlichen Schwerpunkt beim Auto als der Identitätsmaschine schlechthin. Der Begriff des Rituals soll auf die Regelmäßigkeit und Dauerhaftigkeit des Auftretens bestimmter Bilder und Aussagen in den befragten Quellen hinweisen, um auf diese Weise zum Verständnis des technikabhängigen sozialen Wandels und der mental formatierenden Wirkung von Bildroutinen beizutragen. Zugleich geht es um die Erschließung von Quellenmaterial, das in der Kulturgeschichte der Technik bislang selten oder jedenfalls nicht mit Blick auf die soziale Konstruktion von Identitäten untersucht worden ist.

    Description: Über die Wirtschaft der Antike sind wir gut informiert. Für den Waren- und Geldverkehr standen in den Städten eigene Gebäude zur Verfügung, die im römischen Reich von Speicherbauten in bedeutenden Wirtschaftszentren und Hafenorten bis zu Bank- und Börsengebäuden an den zentralen Plätzen der Städte reichten. Diese Bauten wurden von Archäologen und Bauhistorikern vielfach untersucht, wobei Bauweise und Gestaltung im Vordergrund standen. Wirtschaftshistoriker befassten sich intensiv mit Handels- und Geldgeschäften, ohne Zusammenhänge mit Baulichkeiten in den Blick zu nehmen. Interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit eröffnet neue Perspektiven. Mit dem Wissen über wirtschaftliche Vorgänge lassen sich Bauten besser verstehen, und Bauwerke können ökonomische Vorgänge sichtbar machen. Das wurde beim erstmaligen Gedankenaustausch zwischen den verschiedenen Forschungsdisziplinen rasch deutlich. Der vorliegende Tagungsband enthält Beiträge über Handelsformen und Handelsbeziehungen, er stellt Speichergebäude und Kaufmannshäuser vor und beleuchtet mit dem Magdalensberg bei Kärnten ein bedeutendes Zentrum der Erzgewinnung und der Metallverarbeitung. Einen besonderen Platz nimmt die römische Basilika als großartiges Bank- und Börsengebäude ein, dessen Entwicklung um 200 v. Chr. quasi schlagartig am Forum Romanum begann und die neue Vormacht Rom als Zentrum der antiken Wirtschaft und zentrale Instanz des Wirtschafts- und Steuerrechts mit neuen Maßstäben auch städtebaulich prägte. Die beiden letzten Beiträge befassen sich mit der weiteren Entwicklung des Begriffes Basilika und seinen Nachwirkungen im Kirchenbau und in der Architekturtheorie bis heute.

    Description: Thomas Morus' „Von der besten Staatsverfassung und von der neuen Insel Utopia, ein wahrhaft goldenes Büchlein, genauso wohltuend wie heiter“ ist ein Klassiker der Politischen Philosophie. Das 1516 erstmals erschienene Buch prägte die spätere Tradition fiktiver Staatsmodelle. Der Name 'Utopia' bezeichnet nämlich ein „Nirgendwo“, durch dessen Unauffindbarkeit alle Sehnsüchte in eine unerreichbare Ferne projiziert werden. Als Utopie gilt somit eine Vorstellung, die als Idee zwar denkbar, aber nicht unmittelbar umzusetzen ist. Sie ist Wunschtraum, Konzept und Vision einer Welt oder einer Zeit, in der eine neue gesellschaftliche, religiöse oder technische Ordnung herrscht. Der Band hinterfragt, mit welchen Chancen auf gesellschaftspolitische Diskussion heute überhaupt noch fiktive Staatsmodelle ausgearbeitet werden können. Sind z.B. die modernen, weltweit stark rezipierten Entwürfe wie Rawls' Theorie der Gerechtigkeit, No-zicks' Anarchie, Staat, Utopia oder die Sphären der Gerechtigkeit von Walzer als Utopien zu klassifizieren? Oder sind die fiktiven Elemente in ihnen so realitätsnah, daß man sie nicht mehr als utopisch beschreiben kann? Brauchen wir überhaupt Utopien, um in der Lage zu sein, neue, „zukunftsfähige“ Modelle der politischen Organisation einer Gesellschaft zu entwerfen? Oder ist die Politische Philosophie so saturiert, daß selbst unter dem Veränderungsdruck der Globalisierung in absehbarer Zeit mit neuen Staatsutopien nicht zu rechnen sein wird?

Dieser Sachverhalt dürfte in unserem technischen Zeitalter kaum einer besonderen Begründung bedürfen. Es liegt auf der Hand, dass die Menschheit von Technik und technischem Fortschritt abhängig geworden ist, und dies nicht erst in unserer Zeit. Seit jeher war es der Technik entwickelnde und zielgerichtet einsetzende Mensch, der vermittels ,seiner‘ Technik Lebensräume gestaltete, veränderte, revolutionierte, oder auch zerstörte. Unglaublicher Wohlstand auf der einen, aber auch bitterste Armut auf der anderen Seite waren dabei mögliche Konsequenzen, die der technische Wandel hervorzubringen vermochte. Die Einsicht, dass technischer Wandel als gesellschaftliches Phänomen zu interpretieren sei, uns technische Zukunftsentwürfe gerade auch gesellschaftliche Zukunftsentwürfe darstellten, vermochte sich hingegen erst langsam Bahn zu brechen.

    Description: Obwohl jeder Mensch und Technotopbewohner seit der Hochindustrialisierung eine charakteristische, individuelle Technikbiographie hat, die sich über die enorme Zahl industrieller Artefakte erschließen lässt, die zu seinem Lebensweg und zu seiner Identität gehören, neigen wir dazu, Technikgeschichte höchst unpersönlich und geradezu antibiographisch darzustellen. Das Hauptanliegen der unter dem Titel ,Spurweiten' zusammengefassten Essays ist es, hier neue Wege und vor allem neue Quellen aufzuzeigen. Es geht exemplarisch u. a. um die Eisenbahn-Spurweiten, die für die Technikbiographie des Verfassers relevant waren - und es möglicherweise für viele andere Biographien auch sind. Das Persönliche im Strukturellen zu kontextualisieren und Beispiele für Techniksozialisation und -faszination in der späten Massenkonsumgesellschaft sichtbar zu machen, ist das Ziel dieser Reflexionen, die sich stilistisch an der angloamerikanischen Historiographie orientieren.

    Description: Die globalen Entwicklungen geben Anlass zu vorsichtigen Hoffnungen auf eine zumindest virtuell durch die Datenmobilität der elektronischen Netze verbundene Weltgesellschaft; sie erfordern jedoch auch eine kritische Beschäftigung mit dem Phänomen der zunehmenden Mobilität von Menschen, sei es politisch durch weltweite Wanderbewegungen der Migration, aufgrund von Kriegszuständen oder schlechter sozialer und wirtschaftlicher Bedingungen, sei es durch die extensive Reiselust gerade der deutschen Bevölkerung, die zu neuen Welterfahrungen wie zu verkehrs- und umweltpolitischen Fragen führt. Mobilität zwischen Reiselust und neuen Anforderungen der Arbeitswelt, zwischen Umweltproblemen und globaler Kommunikation, zwischen räumlicher Veränderung, z.B. durch die Osterweiterung der Europäischen Union, und künstlerischer Horizonterweiterung der neue Band der Problemkreise der Angewandten Kulturwissenschaft behandelt aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive das Spektrum der Mobilität in einer globalisierten Welt und zeigt auch die Relativität der eurozentrischen Position in einer globalen Welt, denn wie es der Eröffnungsbeitrag von Hermann Lübbe bereits im Titel anmerkt der Globus hat kein Zentrum.

    Description: The assessment of perceived exertion is highly relevant for workplace design to improve the quality of work. This approach represents an objective method based on kinematic data. The method's objective was to determine the feasibility of using the time derivative of acceleration - jerk - as an indicator of time of increased physical exertion (TIPE). The result showed that the jerk data peaks' height and frequency are useful indicators for identifying physical exertion.

Vielmehr spiegeln sich in Baden die überregionalen Verhältnisse und Entwicklungen dieser entscheidenden Umbruchphase wider. Markus Schmidgall bietet auf der Basis einer breiten Quellenstudie ein facettenreiches Bild der Revolution 1918/19 in Baden. Er berücksichtigt sowohl die zentralen Entscheidungen der Vorläufigen Volksregierung unter Führung der Sozialdemokraten als auch die Entwicklungen der badischen Rätebewegung bis zu deren Auflösung im Sommer und Herbst 1919. Eingebettet wird dies in die gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit.
