Description: This is the assessment of the flow requirements for upstream migration of salmonids in some rivers of North West England produced by the North West Water Authority in 1985. This report focuses on the automatic fish counters operating on the resistivity principle used for several years in North West England. This report aims to investigate the flow requirements for upstream migration of salmon and migratory trout. The data obtained confirmed that during summer months most fish movement occurs in the higher range of the available flows, but the migration flow range varied from year to year, depending on prevailing river levels. Of the other environmental variables measured, only water temperature and incident light intensity appear to have any direct association with fish movement. Information on migration flow ranges were used in conjunction with computer simulations of the effects of abstraction proposals on historical flows to assess the implications of these proposals for migratory fish.

Description: This is the episodic variations in stream water chemistry associated with acid rainfall and run-off and the effect on aquatic ecosystems, with particular reference to fish populations in North West England produced by the North West Water Authority in 1985. This report looks at the biological, physical and chemical information collected over a five year period from over 100 sites on upland streams in the North West Region of which drained rocks of low buffering capacity. In both Lake District and South Pennine sites striking differences were found between the composition of invertebrate communities inhabiting acid-stressed and less acid-stressed streams. Electric fishing surveys showed that acidic streams (geometric mean pH 〈5.5) generally had abnormally low densities of salmonids ( 〈 0 .2m2) and that 0+ fish were very few or absent. The latter indicates recruitment failure. Salmon were more sensitive than trout to low pH.

Description: This is the Intensive biological survey of the Glaze Brook catchment May 1981 report produced by the North West Water Authority in 1981. The aim of this report is to identify those pollution problems not identified during the routine biological water quality surveys, and to check the suitability of the routine biological sampling point. This report looks at an intensive biological water quality survey of the Glaze Brook catchment which was carried out by Biol. (S) on 13th-15th May, 1981. Kick samples of invertebrates were taken at 5 sites and all invertebrates were identified and counted in the field. The most significant water quality observations in the report were from: Borsdane brook, Pennington brook, Glaze brook, Amberswood brook, Cunningham brook, Old Mill brook, Shakerley brook, Astley brook and Shaw brook.

Description: This is the Intensive biological survey of the Glaze Brook catchment: Supplementary report on the water quality as indicated by macrophytes produced by the North West Water Authority in 1981. This report describes the results of the macrophyte survey including data on their distribution and the prevailing water quality (nutrient status and toxic metal contamination) It supplements the initial report,TS-BS-81-3, which described the macroinvertebrate survey. The aim of this project is to describe the distribution of macrophytes within the river, paying attention to areas where weed growth may directly affect water quality or amenity usage, and describe the distribution of toxic metals. In the survey 16 sites of 500 m lengths of river were analysed, noting the relative abundance and percentage cover of the macrophytes present, plant score and Community Description Class (C.D.C.) were computed.

This report forms part of a series on component biological investigations, identified by location or topic, within the acid rain project. Reporting of the Wastwater catchment data would not have been given priority ordinarily, but it has been brought forward to coincide with J. Robinson's reporting of his investigations of land use and liming in the catchment. This report shows water chemistry results of a violent rainstorms such pH, alkalinity, Mg, Ca and Al. Moreover it shows invertebrate, fish and chemical data for Wastwater catchment sites.

Description: We develop and test a method to estimate relative abundance from catch and effort data usingneural networks. Most stock assessment models use time series of relative abundance as theirmajor source of information on abundance levels. These time series of relative abundance arefrequently derived from catch-per-unit-of-effort (CPUE) data, using general linearized models(GLMs). GLMs are used to attempt to remove variation in CPUE that is not related to the abundanceof the population. However, GLMs are restricted in the types of relationships between theCPUE and the explanatory variables. An alternative approach is to use structural models basedon scientific understanding to develop complex non-linear relationships between CPUE and theexplanatory variables. Unfortunately, the scientific understanding required to develop thesemodels may not be available. In contrast to structural models, neural networks uses the data toestimate the structure of the non-linear relationship between CPUE and the explanatory variables. Therefore neural networks may provide a better alternative when the structure of the relationshipis uncertain. We use simulated data based on a habitat based-method to test the neuralnetwork approach and to compare it to the GLM approach. Cross validation and simulation testsshow that the neural network performed better than nominal effort and the GLM approach. However, the improvement over GLMs is not substantial. We applied the neural network model toCPUE data for bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) in the Pacific Ocean.

Description: Information on bycatches of sharks collected by observers of the Inter-American Tropical TunaCommission (IATTC) between 1993 and 2004 is presented in this data report. This reportcontains two sections. The first section summarizes information used by the staff of the IATTCto review and revise IATTC observers’ at-sea species identifications of Carcharhinusfalciformis, C. limbatus, and C. longimanus. The revisions were based on 1) data collected onspecies-specific diagnostic characteristics as part of a special sampling program conductedbetween March 2000, and March 2001 and 2) a review of observers’ archival field notes for the1993-2004 period. The second section summarizes the shark bycatches reported by IATTCobservers between 1993 and 2004, incorporating the revisions of observers’ at-seaidentifications. The IATTC-observed shark bycatch data are summarized as tables with annualtallies of observed bycatches and maps of the spatial distributions of the average bycatches perset and size compositions of the bycatches.

Description: This is the Review of discharge consents, River Irwell catchment report produced by the North West Water Authority (NWWA) in 1979. The purpose of this Report is to make recommendations for the revision of consents for discharges within the catchment of the River Irwell, downstream and including the River Medlock in Manchester. This revision has the sole objective of recognising the present effluent and river water quality - proposals for long term river water quality objectives are to be put forward in other Reports. The report identifies the existing situation regarding the legal status of effluent discharges from Authority and non-Authority owned installations within the catchment, details the determinant concentration limits included in existing discharge consents (where appropriate) and proposes the limits to be included in the reviewed consents. The reviewed consents will reflect the quality of effluent achievable by good operation of the existing plant based on 1977 effluent quality data but taking into account any improvements, extensions etc. that have been or are about to be carried out and any known further industrial and/or housing development in the works drainage area.
