    Beschreibung: Blue-green infrastructure (BGI) ponds have an important function of alleviating flood risk and provide water quality improvements among other multiple benefits. Characterisation of bottom sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM) is understudied, but is indispensable for assessing the ponds' functioning because of their role in biogeochemical cycling and pollutant adsorption. Here we report on the analysis of particle sizes and chemistry from multiple locations. The results have shown that SPM in these ponds includes particles of both biological and abiotic origin, and the in situ produced organic matter constitutes a major part of SPM. The relevance of biological processes is often overlooked, but a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations and chemical analysis highlights its primary importance for characterisation of the particulate matter. A considerable proportion of both suspended and sedimented particulates is smaller than 100 microns. There is normally a large fraction of small silt-sized particles, and often a considerable proportion of very fine particles (clay-size). Although for some spectra unimodal distribution has been observed, in many cases the revealed particle size distribution (PSD) was bimodal, and in some instances more than two modes were revealed. A complex PSD would be expected to result from a combination of simple unimodal distributions. Hence the multimodality observed may have reflected contributions from different sources, both abiotic and biological. Furthermore, many smaller particles appear to be interconnected by detrital matter. Among chemical elements routinely detected within the SPM in significant concentrations were Si, Al, Ca, Mg, Fe, K, Mn, P, Cl and S. In a number of cases, however, there were less expected elements such as Ti, Y, Mo, Cr and even Au; these may have reflected the effect of car park and road runoff and/or industrial pollution. Most of these elements (except Mo and Au) and up to 30 others were also routinely detected in sediment samples. Such pollutants as Co, Cu, Ni, Zn and As were detected in bottom sediments of all ponds. There were a number of correlations between pollutants in sediments and the particle's median diameter. However, aggregation leads to large low density flocks and masks correlation of chemicals with SPM particle size. Statistical associations among the elements aided the understanding of their sources and pathways, as well as the underlying biological and abiotic processes. Specifically, our analysis implicated contributions from such sources as allochthonous and autochthonous detritus, roadside and industrial pollution, biologically induced precipitation, and discarded electronics. Elevated levels of rare earth elements (REE) and other trace elements open a possibility of their recovery from the sediments, which should be considered among the multiple benefits of BGI.

    Beschreibung: Past studies have shown that phosphate recovery in the form of struvite is relatively a simple process, which can be achieved by adding a magnesium source in stored urine. However, struvite recovery process at a decentralised level becomes uneconomical due to high input cost of magnesium salts and operational cost. While use of cheaper alternative magnesium sources such as bittern, low-grade MgO and wood ash could lead to partial cost reduction, it is also important to reduce the overall operational costs to make struvite recovery process economically viable and sustainable. In this study, a continuous flow reactor was developed for low-cost struvite recovery from stored urine at decentralised community scale operations. Our study revealed that over 81.2% of phosphate present in urine can be recovered in the form of struvite. Comparison of results from stirred and unstirred experiments shows that higher recovery efficiency is obtained due to minimal loss of fines. Operation and financial assessment of the process shows that struvite recovery can be profitable due to continuous operation of the reactor requiring minimal process control and manpower requirement.

    Beschreibung: It is increasingly recognised that urban trees can contribute to reducing stormwater runoff by intercepting and retaining a fraction of rainfall received. What is less studied is the translation of this to reduced pollutant loads being transferred to receiving streams, rivers, and water bodies. In this paper, we assess interception of two tree species (Eucalyptus microcorys and Ulmus procera) in an urban park. This data is used in simple water balance modelling to predict the environmental and economic benefit of reducing nitrogen loads to receiving waterways as a function of reduced runoff volume resulting from rainfall interception by urban trees on public land (21% of the catchment area). We use a highly urbanized catchment in Melbourne, Australia to demonstrate the impact of an urban forest dominated by deciduous trees, evergreen trees or a mixed tree canopy cover. We found that doubling the urban canopy cover in the catchment, while keeping the current mix ratio of deciduous and evergreen trees, could reduce annual runoff volume by 30 mm (92 MLyr−1). Using the prescribed values that developers must pay the local water authority for nitrogen treatment as a condition of new development, we calculate that this would deliver a nitrogen load removal benefit of AUD$ 200/tree. If only deciduous trees are planted the annual runoff reduction would decrease to 24 mm (73 MLyr−1) and increases to 37 mm (112 MLyr−1) if only evergreen trees are planted. This study highlights both the additional benefits of public street trees and the differences in deciduous and evergreen trees which should be accounted for by policy makers.

    Beschreibung: Rooftops cover a large percentage of land area in urban areas, which can potentially be used for stormwater purposes. Seeking adaptation strategies, there is an increasing interest in utilising green roofs for stormwater management. However, the impact of extreme rainfall on the hydrological performance of green roofs and their design implications remain challenging to quantify. In this study, a method was developed to assess the detention performance of a detention-based green roof (underlaid with 100 mm of expanded clay) for current and future climate conditions under extreme precipitation using an artificial rainfall generator. The green roof runoff was found to be more sensitive to the initial water content than the hyetograph shape. The green roof outperformed the black roof in terms of all performance indicators (time of concentration, centroid delay, T50 or peak attenuation). While the time of concentration for the reference black roof was within 5 minutes independently of rainfall intensity, for the green roof was extrapolated between 30 and 90 minutes with intensity from 0.8 to 2.5 mm/min. Adding a layer of expanded clay under the green roof substrate provided a significant improvement to the detention performance under extreme precipitation in current and future climate conditions.

    Beschreibung: Nature-based solutions (NBS) can protect, manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems. They are a multidisciplinary, integrated approach to address societal challenges and some natural hazards effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits. NBS applications can be easily noticed in circular cities, establishing an urban system that is regenerative and accessible. This paper aims to offer a review on NBS for urban water management from the literature and some relevant projects running within the COST Action ‘Implementing nature-based solutions for creating a resourceful circular city’. The method used in the study is based on a detailed tracking of specific keywords in the literature using Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, ScienceDirect and Scopus. Based on this review, three main applications were identified: (i) flood and drought protection; (ii) the water-food-energy nexus; and (iii) water purification. The paper shows that NBS provide additional benefits, such as improving water quality, increasing biodiversity, obtaining social co-benefits, improving urban microclimate, and the reduction of energy consumption by improving indoor climate. The paper concludes that a systemic change to NBS should be given a higher priority and be preferred over conventional water infrastructure.

    Beschreibung: Lake Dianchi is severely polluted with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). The effects of implementing environmental policies and technologies on future lake quality are not well understood. We analyse effects of environmental policies and technologies on future river export of nutrients into Lake Dianchi. We develop scenarios for 2050 and analyse these with the existing MARINA-Lakes model (Model to Assess River Inputs of Nutrient to lAkes). The scenarios differ in assumptions about future nutrient management in agriculture, sewage systems and mining. In the SSP3 (Shared Socio-economic Pathway 3) scenario, river export of nutrients to Lake Dianchi is projected to increase 1.4–4.4 times between 2012 and 2050. In the Current Policies scenario, rivers may export fewer nutrients than in SSP3, but this may not avoid eutrophication. Effects of improved nutrient management on river export of nutrients differ among nutrient forms, sub-basins and sources (e.g., urbanization in the north, agriculture in the middle and south). Pollution levels can be reduced below the 2012 level in an Optimistic scenario assuming advanced wastewater treatment, improved nutrient management in agriculture and no mining. However, even this may not completely prevent eutrophication. Preventing eutrophication requires even more efforts, for example, in implementing circular-oriented management options.

    Beschreibung: Wet retention ponds temporarily store and slowly release stormwater to mitigate peak flow rates and remove particulate-bound pollutants. However, with sandy underlying soils, wet retention ponds may provide additional benefits through infiltration, thereby recharging groundwater and supporting baseflow in streams. Current design guidance often requires lining wet ponds to prevent infiltration; however, modern stormwater management strategies recommend maximizing runoff volume reduction through infiltration. Two infiltrating wet retention ponds in Fayetteville, NC, USA, were monitored for one year to assess volume reduction, peak flow mitigation, and water quality. In some months, 100% of stormwater runoff infiltrated and evaporated, with cumulative annual volume reductions of 60 and 51% for the two ponds. For events up to 76 mm (equivalent to the local 1-yr, 24-hr storm), measured peak flow reductions were similar to those of typical (non-infiltrating) wet ponds (median 99% reduction). Dissolved nitrogen species, total and dissolved phosphorus, and total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations were significantly reduced in both ponds; mean percent reductions were greater than 30% for each of these pollutants. Effluent concentrations were on par with typical (non-infiltrating) wet ponds previously monitored in North Carolina. Due to the aforementioned runoff reduction, nutrient and TSS loads were reduced by (at minimum) 35 and 67%, respectively. Infiltrating wet ponds were able to meet both peak flow and volume mitigation goals, suggesting that they could be a common tool in regions with sandy soils.

    Beschreibung: Stormwater runoff from urban development causes undesired impacts to surface waters, including discharge of pollutants, erosion, and loss of habitat. A treatment train consisting of permeable interlocking concrete pavement and underground stormwater harvesting was monitored to quantify water quality improvements. The permeable pavement provided primary treatment and the cistern contributed to final polishing of total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity concentrations (〉96%) and loads (99.5% for TSS). Because of this, 〉40% reduction of sediment-bound nutrient forms and total nitrogen was observed. Nitrate reduction (〉70%) appeared to be related to an anaerobic zone in water stored in the scarified soil beneath the permeable pavement, allowing denitrification to occur. Sequestration of copper, lead, and zinc occurred during the first 5 months of monitoring, with leaching observed during the second half of the monitoring period. This was potentially caused by a decrease in pH within the cistern or residual chloride from deicing salt causing de-sorption of metals from accumulated sediment. Pollutant loading followed the same trends as pollutant concentrations, with load reduction improved vis-à-vis concentrations because of the 27% runoff reduction provided by the treatment train. This study has shown that permeable pavement can serve as an effective pretreatment for stormwater harvesting schemes.
