Notes: The results of an air quality impact assessment conducted in 1980, for the proposed development of Stansted airport, Essex, to a capacity of 15 million passengers per annum, are presented. Air pollutant concentrations measured in the vicinity of the airport were found to be low in comparison to ambient air quality guidelines and also when compared with other airports and urban areas.Atmospheric dispersion modelling to predict future emissions and ambient concentrations of air pollutants revealed that air quality standards would be unlikely to be infringed and that concentrations would be generally within the range of those measured at Gatwick airport in 1979.

Notes: European efforts in water and environmental management are primarily concerned with the refinement and re-moulding of well-established institutional structures. In the Third World such structures either exist in a state of insecure infancy or have to be created. This paper contends that whilst consulting engineers have contributed significantly to technical developments in the Third World, their influence upon related management structures has been largely stifled. The reasons for this are drawn into focus by an examination of practice in other countries and suggestions are made for new approaches. The influence of International Funding Agencies is highlighted and questioned.

Notes: Many aspects of ground water involve shortest paths between two points and shortest round trips to many points. These problems are included in network theory which is not easily available to ground-water specialists. This paper introduces some of the techniques which can be solved by hand for fairly small projects. Larger networks can often be divided into districts, each of which may then be amenable to hand solution. The minimal spanning tree problem is described as background to the more useful problem of shortest path between two particular nodes. The matrix method is the simplest solution for the shortest path between all pairs of nodes and can easily be solved by hand for 30 or less nodes. This data can be used to determine which node is most centrally located and to determine a shorter round trip from one node to all others, returning to the origin. The matrix can be used for partial routes and for routing of two or more vehicles.

Notes: In the Middle East ground water has been used by man for at least 10,000 years, so that cultivation could be practised in arid regions. One of the most unusual ways of obtaining ground water is by means of qanats, which are small man-made tunnels carrying water by gravity flow from beneath the water table to the ground surface. In Iran and Afghanistan in particular, many complex qanat systems are found supplying water to regions with very low precipitation totals, which are thus able to support locally intensive human settlement. At the present time in those areas close to the larger urban centres qanats are being replaced by pumped wells as the major suppliers of ground water.

Notes: Warm Springs Valley, located in northwestern Virginia, is characterized by the discharge of springs from cavernous limestone at temperatures up to 40°C, although the measured geothermal gradient is a normal 10°C/km. The area is therefore hypothesized to be an important example of a situation where thermal convection is sufficient to produce high-temperature surface waters. A finite-difference numerical model was constructed to simulate the simultaneous transport of heat and fluid under combined forced and free convection conditions. This model was used to test the hypothesized heat flow system for Warm Springs Valley. The results of the testing show that, within the hydrogeological constraints found at Warm Springs Valley, convection with a normal geothermal gradient is capable of producing 40°C hot springs. The conditions required a zone of enhanced vertical hydraulic conductivity in the area of ground-water discharge and a deep zone of enhanced horizontal hydraulic conductivity. The enhanced zones are consistent with the geology found in the basin.
