    Beschreibung: The data show that the average value of pCO2 in surface seawater in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Qatar is supersaturated with respect to the atmosphere. The excess pCO2 reflects a balance between a source due to the impact of increasing T and S on the carbonate system equilibrium constants and a sink due to CO2 loss due to gas exchange from surface seawater after it enters the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, CaCO3 formation was still more important, relative to net biological production, than in the open ocean. The tracer Alk* has values determined by CaCO3 formation and had values suggesting substantial CaCO3 formation.     Beschreibung: Inert gases dissolved in the ocean are powerful tracers of the impact of physical processes on gases, particularly air-sea gas exchange (by both diffusive and bubble-meditated processes), temperature change, atmospheric pressure variation, mixing between different water masses, and ice processes. We have compiled a global ocean database of dissolved neon, argon, and krypton measurements, supplemented by helium, xenon, and nitrogen/argon (N2/Ar) ratios in some locations. Samples were collected on board multiple research cruises spanning the period 1999 through 2016 and analyzed by mass spectrometry at four different shore-based laboratories (University of Victoria, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, University of Washington, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography). Version 2.0 corrects an incorrect sign in the longitude for cruise 33KI20040814:HOT162 in version 1.0. The error in the database does not affect any figures in the publication (doi: 10.1146/annurev-marine-121916-063604).     Beschreibung: To investigate anti-predatory and foraging behaviors of whelks, we conducted laboratory experiments at Bodega Marine Laboratory in 2017 to test whether previous predator exposure had a sustained effect on prey foraging and in turn on a basal resource, even after the predator was removed. We tested for both behavioral and morphological legacies of prior predation. The study system consisted of a tri-trophic food chain, using the red rock crab, Cancer productus, as the predator, the carnivorous whelk, Nucella ostrina, as the prey species, and the California mussel, Mytilus californianus, as the basal resource.     Beschreibung: Predation intensity recorded from exposed prey communities at coastal sites across a latitudinal gradient spanning the subarctic to the tropics. Invertebrate communities developed under low predation for three or 12 months within cages. Mature prey communities were then exposed to ambient predation, with a high definition camera recording all predation events during the diurnal period over three days of exposure. This experiment provided an assessment of predation intensity (and predator identity) to complement predator exclusion experiments that measured impact of predators on prey community assembly. This dataset is an initial examination of the proteome allocation of this heterotrophic bacteria and will contribute to C-CoMP's efforts that are focused on understanding the physiology of model marine bacteria. A total of 2341 proteins were identified in DSS-3. The Moran laboratory at University of Georgia grew and prepared the cultures and the Saito laboratory at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducted the proteomics analyses.     Beschreibung: This dataset provides seawater macronutrient concentrations from the Amundsen and Ross Seas, including from Terra Nova Bay, collected onboard the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer as part of the Cobalamin and Iron Co-Limitation of Phytoplankton Species (CICLOPS) expedition from December 11, 2017 to March 3, 2018. Samples analyzed for phosphate, nitrite, nitrate + nitrite, silicate and ammonia were collected from full depth profiles via a trace-metal-clean rosette (TMR), filtered with a 0.2 um filter, and stored frozen until analysis via a nutrient autoanalyzer.     Beschreibung: The French Polynesian island of Mo’orea experienced a severe mass bleaching event in 2019 accompanied by widespread coral mortality. At the most heavily impacted sites, Acropora hyacinthus individuals that were resistant to bleaching were observed alongside colonies that bleached but showed signs of symbiont recovery shortly after the bleaching event. Fragments of healthy A. hyacinthus colonies five months post-bleaching were sampled for energetic assays and histological measurements. Despite healthy appearances in both resistant and recovered corals, recovered colonies had significantly reduced energy reserves compared to resistant colonies. In addition, compound effects of stress on reproduction were observed: recovered colonies displayed both a lower probability of containing gametes and lower fecundity per polyp.     Beschreibung: Oceanographic data, when well-documented and stewarded toward preservation, have the potential to accelerate new science and facilitate our understanding of complex natural systems. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) is funded by the NSF to document and manage marine biological, chemical, physical, and biogeochemical data, ensuring their discovery and access, and facilitating their reuse. The task of curating and providing access to research data is a collaborative process, with associated actors and critical activities occurring throughout the data’s life cycle. BCO-DMO supports all phases of the data life cycle and works closely with investigators to ensure open access of well-documented project data and information. Supporting this curation process is a flexible cyberinfrastructure that provides the means for data submission, discovery, and access; ultimately enabling reuse. Based upon community feedback, this infrastructure is undergoing evaluation and improvement to better meet oceanographic research needs. This poster will introduce the repository and describe some of the strategic enhancements coming to BCO-DMO, and presents an opportunity for you to provide feedback on enhancements yet to come. We invite you to think about your own research workflow of searching and accessing new data for research, and to provide your feedback through the poster’s interactive sections. Your input can help BCO-DMO improve its service to the research community.     Beschreibung: This dataset includes biogenic and inorganic calcite and aragonite dissolution rates from the CDisK-IV cruise in the North Pacific Ocean, August 2017. We include niskin incubator alkalinity, pH, silicate, phosphate, and nitrate data, as well as calculated saturation state and dissolution rates. Rates are reported in units of g/g/day and also g/cm2/day, normalized by the specific surface areas of the materials used. Dissolution rates of inorganic aragonite and calcite, along with biogenic E. huxleyi liths, a planktic foraminifera assemblage, and a benthic foraminifera Amphistegina species, are provided, for 4 out of the 6 stations occupied on the cruise.     Beschreibung: This dataset represents the ecological results of a stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) multi-species transmission experiment. Eight colonies of six species of corals (Colpophyllia natans, Montastraea cavernosa, Orbicella annularis, Porites astreoides, Pseudodiploria strigosa, and Siderastrea siderea) were split in half and one half of these fragments were simultaneously exposed toSCTLD-affected colonies of Diploria labyrinthiformis and the other half were exposed to healthy colonies of D. labyrinthiformis. All corals were monitored for lesion appearance over an eight day experimental period. No lesions were recorded on healthy-exposed corals. Numbers of fragments showing lesion appearance, time to lesion appearance, and expansion rates of lesions for SCTLD-exposed corals are reported here.     Beschreibung: Shallow-water coral reefs hold large quantities of acrylate and its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). The main sources of acrylate in coral reefs are from the coral algal symbionts in the family Symbiodiniaceae and from the photolysis of dissolved organic matter. Heterotrophic consumption is the main loss for these compounds, albeit these processes are poorly characterized. This dataset contains rate-constant data for the biological consumption of dissolved acrylate and DMSP in near-surface seawater collected from a Mo’orea coral reef, French Polynesia, and the offshore open Pacific Ocean. The coral reef and Pacific Ocean stations were located offshore from the UC Berkeley Gump Research Station. Samples were collected from April 6 to April 24, 2018.     Beschreibung: This dataset represents data from wild populations of E. affinis. Copepod populations were collected from eight locations in the Baltic Sea using bongo and WP2 nets with 100 μm mesh and stored in RNAlater. Sampling locations spanned a range of mean annual salinities from low (~3 PSU) to higher salinity (~19 PSU). Individual copepods (ranging from 50 to 200 in number) were pooled and their DNA was extracted. Paired-end whole-genome sequencing libraries were prepared using the Illumina Nextera DNA kit (Illumina, Inc.) and sequenced on five lanes of an Illumina HiSeq 4000 sequencer, generating an average of approximately 176 million paired-end (100 bp) reads per pool.     Beschreibung: Dataset: CTD profiles RV Connecticut June 2022
    Beschreibung: Seven stations on the shelf and slope south of Montauk, NY on 14-15 June 2022 were sampled. Basic hydrographic properties, including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and pH were measured and rosette samples were taken for chlorophyll, nutrients, and microplankton. Water was filtered for metagenomics and metatranscriptomics and picked individual microplankters for sequencing. Three to ten depths were sampled at each station. Our shallowest station was on the shelf at 38m and the deepest was at the slope edge at 2400m. Due to limitations of the CTD our deepest sampled depth was 1150m. At the two shallowest stations, we also deployed a Wetstar fluorometer for phytoplankton fluorescence. The CTD data were processed with SeaBird's Seasoft program and converted to spreadsheet format.     Beschreibung: The feeding larvae of many echinoids develop long postoral arms relative to body length when food is sparse but relatively short postoral arms when food is abundant, a response thought to adaptively adjust feeding capability. However, in an important recent study, larvae of Dendraster excentricus exhibited this food-conditioned plasticity only when reared at a high density typical of laboratory cultures; when reared at a lower density more representative of larval densities in nature they did not exhibit this plastic response. This suggests that laboratory results cannot be easily extended to make inferences about phenotypic plasticity in nature. We replicated this study and extended it to an even lower larval culture density and to a second species, Lytechinus pictus. Larvae of D. excentricus developed longer arms adjusted for body length when fed the lower of two food rations at all culture densities, though differences were only marginally significant at the lower culture density in one experiment. Larvae of L. pictus tended to develop longer arms adjusted for body length at lower food rations, though differences only approached statistical significance at the highest culture density in one experiment. For both species, contrasts between food rations almost always showed an inverse relationship between postoral arm length and stomach length, consistent with prior work demonstrating trade-offs in investment in these two features characteristic of phenotypic plasticity. The data submitted here were collected in 2021 and 2022 in the laboratory at California State University, Long Beach. Two datafiles are provided: one containing data on actual densities in culture vessels (to check on treatment effectiveness: density_counts.csv), and one containing all the larval morphology data (density_morphometrics.csv).     Beschreibung: Benthic invertebrate communities, that the highly productive US West Coast fishery species and marine mammals rely on for food, are being increasingly impacted by low oxygen conditions. This project addresses the potential ecological consequences of a new member to these benthic communities, the ghost shrimp Neotrypaea. The first three cruises for this project (sampling stations provided herein) were conducted to ground-truth predictions of Neotrypaea’s new offshore distribution with video and sample collections. Samples collected on these cruises will be used to assess whether the species compositions of various areas on the Oregon and Washington shelf are altered by the recruitment of Neotrypaea.     Beschreibung: These data include carbonate chemistry, nutrient concentration, and dissolved oxygen concentration for discreet water samples collected within Galveston Bay, TX. Eight single day cruises were conducted quarterly aboard the R/V Lithos or R/V Trident from June 2017 through September 2018. In addition, discreet water samples were collected at sites 10 - 60 km outside the mouth of the bay and up to 15m deep to characterize incoming seawater to the bay. These samples were collected on three cruises (WTX1 - R/V Manta, WTX3 - R/V Manta, WTX4 - R/V Pelican) in June, August, and November 2017. Discreet water samples were collected for total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved oxygen, and dissolved nutrients. CTD profiles were collected at each sampling site. Stochastic coastal acidification events in response to high volume rainfall and runoff that often accompanies tropical cyclone events has the potential to represent a significant threat to valuable calcifying reef ecosystems. Understanding acidification response and recovery to such events is critical to improving conservation and protection of coastal ecosystems, like oyster and coral reefs, particularly as climate change continues and tropical cyclone rainfall intensity increases. These data assess the impact of the rainfall and runoff from Hurricane Harvey on the acidification levels in Galveston Bay, TX. Samples were collected and analyzed primarily by Tacey Hicks, with assistance from other students in Dr. Katie Shamberger ’s research group, at Texas A&M University.     Beschreibung: Covariance can exist between the genetic and environmental influences on phenotype (CovGE) and can have an important role in ecological and evolutionary processes in nature and population responses to environmental change. CovGE is commonly called countergradient variation (CnGV; negative CovGE)or cogradient variation (CoGV; positive CovGE)and has been recognized in classic studies that have established several long-standing hypotheses about CnGV and CoGV. For instance, it is hypothesized that CnGV is more prevalent in nature than CoGV, that CnGV is more prevalent in fish, amphibian, and invertebrate taxa, across latitudinal or altitudinal environmental gradients, and more frequently occurs in metabolic compensation traits, including development, growth, feeding, metabolism, and activity, while CoGV is more commonly observed in morphological traits. The recent development of a standardized method to measure CovGE allows for the first rigorous quantitative exploration of these hypotheses. We use meta-analysis and apply the novel quantitative method to test whether the above hypotheses are supported in the literature. We found no differences in frequency of CnGV and CoGV, and no systematic patterns relative to taxa, environmental gradient, or trait type. However, our analyses suggest that CovGE may be as common as gene by environment (GxE) interactions. Given that CovGE is likely to have a strong impact on future outcomes for organisms experiencing environmental change, that significant CovGE occurred frequently, and the lack of systematic patterns in the occurrence of CovGE, we encourage a more widespread application of measuring CovGE.     Beschreibung: Spatial covariance between genotypic and environmental influences on phenotypes (CovGE) can result in the nonrandom distribution of genotypes across environmental gradients and is a potentially important factor driving local adaptation. However, a framework to quantify the magnitude and significance of CovGE has been lacking. We develop a novel quantitative/analytical approach to estimate and test the significance of CovGE from reciprocal transplant or common garden experiments, which we validate using simulated data. We demonstrate how power to detect CovGE changes over a range of experimental designs. We confirm an inverse relationship between gene-by-environment interactions (GxE) and CovGE, as predicted by first principles, but show how phenotypes can be influenced by both. The metric provides a way to measure how phenotypic plasticity covaries with genetic differentiation and highlights the importance of understanding the dual influences of CovGE and GxE on phenotypes in studies of local adaptation and species’ responses to environmental change.
