Description: Knowledge about horses and horse breeding is a cultural asset, which has evolved over centuries. At the same time, it is an essential economic commodity. The anthropological focus on knowledge of this study is on the current parameters of breeding the “Hannoveraner”, one of the world’s largest and also most popular horse breeds. The author conducts participatory observations on agricultural family farms that breed them and follows the development of individual horses from birth to successful athletes. The aim is to identify the genesis and exchange of the various stocks and forms of knowledge. The guiding questions of the analysis are: What is equine knowledge and how is it currently changing? Equine knowledge accumulates between breeders and horses and the diverse other actors and entities of this multispecies constellation in their shared everyday life. Videographic vignettes and photographs open up further access to the, primarily incorporated, knowledges and practices of horse breeding in agricultural environments, which are at the center of the ethnography.

Description: Feedback from teachers is of great importance for the learning development of pupils. For optimal support of learning processes, it is important how students perceive and utilise feedback. Based on theoretical supply-utilisation models, this book addresses the question of the extent to which students in upper secondary school perceive feedback from teachers in German lessons differently and how this perception affects students' motivation development. The findings from latent change models provide information on the stability and change in feedback perception over the course of a school term as well as on differences in feedback perception between students. In addition, the longitudinal analyses highlight the interplay between different dimensions of feedback quality and the development of learning motivation. The findings expand the state of research on the perception of feedback and the development of differentiated effects on motivation and also open up a wide range of suggestions for educational practice.

Description: The Goettingen University acquired in 1773 a private natural history collection from Christian Wilhelm Buettner, one of its professors. This collection became the core of the University’s Academic Museum. In addition to thousands of items of natural history (minerals, plants, zoological items) 66 Art Things were part of Buettner‘s collection. The publication investigates the question, if and how the emergence of scholarly disciplines was stimulated by processes of forming and working with specific collections, taking the development of the Ethnographic collection starting from the 66 Art Things (1773) to the foundation of the Institute and Collection of Völkerkunde (1935/36) and the emergence of Völkerkunde as a university discipline in Göttingen as an example.

Description: In medical criminal law, there are often normative settings that deviate from the models of general criminal law norms: The central question therefore arises as to when this deviation can be understood as a "motor of innovation" for general criminal law and when it "unprincipledly" violates its well-founded framework. The Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Göttingen began its 15th colloquium with this fundamental topic, relating to the interactions between medical criminal law and general criminal law doctrines, and thus a small anniversary.

Description: As a new conservation paradigm, rewilding is quickly gaining popularity across Scotland. Against the urgencies of the Anthropocene, rewilding projects offer hope by imagining radical visions of biodiverse futures that promise liveability not just to humans but a large host of species. Based on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Scotland, this study explores the diverse multispecies temporalities that come to matter within rewilding. Scottish rewilding landscapes are populated by various beings and absences that blur rigid categorisations of linear temporality into past, present, and future. The ghosts of extirpated species continue to shape the becoming of landscapes, and the unruly presence of invasive alien species complicate the convivial ethics of rewilding initiatives. Following the temporal entanglements of various Scottish beasts, this book describes the interconnections between time, death, and belonging in storied landscapes.

Description: What relations (of difference) between students develop in such practices of ‘Planarbeit’ in individualized secondary school teaching in which students relate to instructional tasks and to each other? In this study, a (video-)ethnographic approach is chosen to explore the contribution of students to the formation of social order in the classroom. The findings show that the ‘Selbstständigkeit’ (independence) of students in individualized plan-teaching, which relies on students not only showing themselves responsible for their own progression, but also as ‘mit-zuständig’ (co-responsible) for the progression of the work processes of their classmates, is relational: The continuation, the resuming and the appropriateness of individual progressions is socially accounted for and practiced in task-related references between students – which is associated not only with specific practices, but also with relations of difference between those involved.

Description: The transformation towards a carbon-neutral society can only succeed in cooperation with citizens and not against them. This edited volume shows ways to achieve this goal. It presents the results of the interdisciplinary project “Experiencing Politics and Law, Shaping the Future” and the project itself. Citizens were at the centre of the project. Supported by experts in law and political science, they developed ideas on how to improve citizen participation in climate policies. In sum, the contributions form a dialogue between the citizens’ perspective, legal and political science analyses and the views of practitioners.

Description: Experiences, processes and constellations of exile, flight, and persecution have deeply shaped global history and are still widespread aspects of human existence today. People are persecuted, incarcerated, tortured or deported on the basis of their political beliefs, gender, ethnic or ethno-national belonging, religious affiliation, and other socio-political categories. People flee or are displaced in the context of collective violence such as wars, rebellions, coups, environmental disasters or armed conflicts. After migrating, but not exclusively in this context, people find themselves suddenly isolated, cut off from their networks of belonging, their biographical projects and their collective histories. The articles in this volume are concerned with the challenges of navigating through multiple paradoxes and contradictions when it comes to grasping these phenomena sociologically, on the levels of self-reflection, theorizing, and especially doing empirical research.

Description: Legal proceedings need time. On the other hand, the duration of proceedings can have an impact on their outcome and major consequences for the parties. Nevertheless, German procedural law provides parties with little recourses to speed up proceedings in which undue delays have occurred. For proceedings that have an impact on the litigants’ family life, this violates article 13 of the ECHR, the European Court of Human Rights decided in its Kuppinger II judgment. As a consequence, legal remedies for the expedition of proceedings have been introduced into the German Act on Proceedings in Family Matters and in Matters of Non-contentious Jurisdiction. This dissertation examines whether the new remedies fulfil the requirements of the ECHR and whether the Basic Law and the Convention require similar remedies in civil proceedings, other family proceedings and in proceedings in matters of non-contentious jurisdiction.

Description: If injured or wounded soldiers suffer permanent physical or psychological limitations, the question of social security arises after leaving active service. This problem has become particularly apparent again with the increasing military use of the Bundeswehr in missions abroad. Since then, the legislature has attempted to adapt the traditional pension system to the new circumstances on several occasions. The reorganization of the social compensation law once again provides an opportunity to fundamentally question the legal concept of the military pension system. Against this background, the study analyzes the constitutional framework of the law on military pensions. In particular, it shows that compensation for physical or psychological losses resulting from military service is not a voluntary benefit of the state, but on the one hand already results from the constitutionally anchored commitment of soldiers to their employer, and on the other hand can be based on fundamental legal considerations.

Description: Illustrations are a central component of scientific practice. They generate knowledge, shape and order it, communicate, position and discuss it at the same time. Such images, so-called epistemic images, can thus hardly be isolated from their local, social, cultural, and historical contexts. If one wants to understand the production, aesthetics, and characteristic uses of scientific images, it is necessary to take such contexts into account. The object of investigation in this thesis are the images of human embryos in the scientific work of the Göttingen anatomist Erich Blechschmidt (1904 - 1992). Initially conceived and communicated as a specialized collection, Blechschmidt's Human Embryological Documentation Collection and the images derived from it remain an anchor point for a very heterogeneous audience to this day. The work seeks explanatory approaches for the multifaceted history of the impact of Blechschmidt's images, for determining factors of their apparently enormous emotional-intuitive radiance and attraction. This is done in the sense of an iconographic-iconological analysis. The basis for this is a medical-historical investigation in the form of a reconstruction of the history of medical ideas with a focus on concepts of physiological medicine as well as a history of human embryological imaging. References to Rudolf Virchow and his cellular theory, Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring and Wilhelm His the. Ä. are presented. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

To transpose the Directive, all 27 Member States were required to enact their own national whistleblowing laws by 17 December 2021, in many cases leading to the creation of an entirely new field of law previously unknown to many national legal systems. The papers included in this book are the result of the “2nd European Conference on Whistleblowing Legislation”, providing readers with a first in-depth look into the emerging field of research that is European Whistleblowing Law.

Description: This publication gathers contributions to understand better and further develop the European Citizens’ Initiative. This participatory and agenda-setting tool introduced into the Treaty of Lisbon has not yet reached its full potential of citizen engagement, nor has it driven the significant policy changes initially expected. Bearing this in mind, the project ECI: From A to Z aimed to promote the knowledge and use of the European Citizens’ Initiative within the higher education arena by engaging investigators and students from four different Universities (University of Coimbra; Georg-August University of Göttingen; Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi and the University of Vigo) to work together to share their concerns and common views on the European Union role and policies. This publication describes the methodology followed and results reached under the project, but more than that, it is a practical toolkit for all who wish to know more about the European Citizens’ Initiative and how to put it in motion.

Description: Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt (1685–1735), a physician from Danzig, was sent to Siberia in 1718 by Tsar Peter I, primarily to research the medicinal plants of this vast territory. On his own initiative, Messerschmidt went far beyond this framework and in the course of his expedition of several years (1720–1727), largely on his own, realized a research program that included the disciplines of botany, ornithology, zoology, meteorology, archaeology, linguistics, ethnology. His extremely extensive scientific legacy, including the summary work “Sibiria perlustrata”, has remained unpublished to this day, with a few exceptions. In this monograph, Messerschmidt’s life and work are presented comprehensively for the first time ever. The most important basis of the presentation is the handwritten estate of the explorer, preserved in the St. Petersburg Academy Archives, the components of which are presented in detail. Although this legacy has remained largely unpublished, the research results achieved by Messerschmidt, particularly in the fields of botany and zoology, already had a considerable impact in the 18th century, which is described in more detail in the book.

Description: The war in Syria has lasted for many years and continues to cast a dark shadow over its people, including healthcare workers caring for those injured and in distress. During the war, healthcare workers have been exposed to unprecedented challenges, becoming targets of bombing, killing, siege, arrest, and torture. Moreover, healthcare workers continue to experience difficult situations that require them to make decisions with no clear or easy moral choice. The present study aimed to understand the experiences of healthcare workers and the difficulties and challenges that hinder applying existing ethical frameworks and codes for disasters within Syria’s context of revolution and war. Qualitative analysis of interviews led to classification of the ethical challenges experienced by healthcare workers into four groups: the risks from providing care; stewardship of resources and work challenges; corruption and organizational pressure; and psychological, emotional, and social stress. The study also showed that both Syrian healthcare workers and the developers of ethical frameworks adopt many similar values and principles. Yet, the participants adopted several unique moral values not identified in ethical frameworks as a result of navigating their professional duties under the circumstances of the Syrian war. At last, recognizing the challenges and precarious tasks healthcare workers cope with during wars and other similar disasters could help volunteers, medical personnel, and humanitarian organizations deciding to work in Syria better understand the specific context and obstacles for ethical decision-making. Moreover, attracting attention for and support of Syrian healthcare workers locally and globally presents a long-lasting benefit.

Description: In this research work, an archaeometric study was carried out on 374 pottery samples (prehistoric, indigenous, black-painted, kitchenware, amphorae, Terra Sigillata, and Tegole) from two archaeological areas in Sicily: The Sicani Mountains and the chora of Camarina. For this purpose, The ceramic fractions were analyzed by particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). This form of analysis proved to be crucial, as it permitted the comparison of the find materials studied in this thesis and the data obtained from the scientific literature through multivariate statistical analysis. This made it possible to identify the place of production of the finds, distin-guish local materials from imported ones, and reflect on their circulation in Sicily, in a regional and interregional framework. Data processing also highlighted the evolution of regional economic exchanges in Sicily, allowing a reconstruction of some trade circuits.

Despite of its relevance for the penal system, this issue is being neglected by the jurisprudential and criminological science. This publication wants to fill this gap of scientific assessment. The focus of this publication is the illustration of legal and practical countermeasures against drug issues and their practical limits in the detention facilities. At the same time it also consideres practical areas of tension concerning the goals of law enforcement. Furthermore the author has analysed miscellaneos empirical studies regarding the symptoms of drug addiction The focus of this publication is the illustration of legal and practical countermeasures against drug issues in the detention facilities, which occur in captives. For the purpose of his research, the author has also interviewed experts in the detention facilities of several federal states. Description: Every day many people leave the place where they live and move to some other place, where they settle permanently or stay for many years. The contributions to this volume are based on the results of three empirical research projects which set out to investigate the situation of migrants in Jordan, Brazil, Germany and other European countries. The articles focus on migrants at their place of arrival and ask questions such as: How do they look back on their life histories and migration paths? What dynamics and processes led up to their migration projects and how do they explain their motives? The studies in this volume show that leaving and arriving are interrelated: leaving one’s home region is part of a long process, partly planned and partly unplanned, which is determined by complex collective, familial and individual constellations, and which has significant consequences for the action patterns and participation strategies of migrants in their arrival societies. This book also shows which constellations enable some migrants to realize their goals in their present situation, and which constraints or obstacles make it impossible for others to do so.

Description: This research examines the social, political and economic history of Indians in Zanzibar in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, specifically between 1870s and 1963. Based on evidence collected from oral interviews and written archival documents, this research work argues that, the Indian migration history in Zanzibar, during this period, was impacted by their religious diversity, economic factors and social factors, as well as the British colonial interest. This research analysis yielded a number of the following key findings: First, there were heterogeneous migration patterns among the Indian migrants in East Africa, influenced by various factors including religion, caste, and the historical contexts in which particular migrants arrived. Second, numerous different social, physical, economic and political processes in India and East Africa motivated Indians to leave their homeland and form a migration community in Zanzibar from 1800 to 1963. Third, the desire to pass on their religion, traditions and customs to their descendants was a significant motivation for Indians to open their own private schools in Zanzibar. Fourth, the change of administration in 1890 had a major impact on the Indians in Zanzibar, especially investors who had already invested heavily in the local economy. Finally, despite their minority status compared to other communities such as Africans and Arabs, Indians participated in the politics of Zanzibar that led towards independence.

Description: The present book is a special gift for a special colleague and friend. Defined as an “Unfestschrift,” it gives colleagues, students, and friends of Regina Bendix an opportunity to express their esteem for Regina’s inspiration, cooperation, leader¬ship, and friendship in an adequate and lasting manner. The title of the present book, Reading Matters, is as close as possible to an English equivalent of the beautiful German double entendre Erlesenes (meaning both “something read/a reading” and “something exquisite”). Presenting “matters for reading,” the Unfestschrift unites short contributions about “readings” that “mattered” in some way or another for the contributors, readings that had an impact on their understanding of whatever they were at some time or presently are interested in. The term “readings” is understood widely. Since most of the invited contributors are academics, the term implies, in the first place, readings of an academic or scholarly nature. In a wider notion, however, “readings” also refer to any other piece of literature, the perception of a piece of art (a painting, a sculpture, a performance), listening to music, appreciating a “folkloric” performance or a fieldwork experience, or just anything else whose “reading” or individual perception has been meaningful for the contributors in different ways. Contrary to a strictly scholarly treatment of a given topic in which the author often disappears behind the subject, the presentations unveil and highlight the contributor’s personal involve¬ment, and thus a dimension of crucial importance for ethnographers such as the dedicatee.

But how were those changes in state conveyed into society and which reactions were aroused? This thesis concentrates on occasional poetry as a part of the early modern media to convey the message of peace, the representation of peace and respective strategies of legitimacy of a certain peace treaty and therefore, identifies early modern ideas and concepts of peace. The focus is on selected peace treaties between 1648 and 1763. The comparative method allows to draw conclusions on historical continuity and historical changes.

Description: The mechanical properties of cells are largely determined by the cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton is an intricate and complex structure formed by protein filaments, motor proteins, and crosslinkers. The three main types of protein filaments are microtubules, actin filaments, and intermediate filaments ( IFs ). Whereas the proteins that form microtubules and actin filaments are exceptionally conserved throughout cell types and organisms, the family of IFs is diverse. For example, the IF protein vimentin is expressed in relatively motile fibroblasts, and keratin IFs are found in epithelial cells. This variety of IF proteins might therefore be linked to the various mechanical properties of different cell types. In the scope of this thesis, I combine studies of IF mechanics on different time scales and in systems of increasing complexity, from single filaments to networks in cells. This multiscale approach allows for the simplification necessary to interpret observations while adding increasing physiological context in subsequent experiments. We especially focus on the tunability of the IF mechanics by environmental cues in these increasingly complex systems. In a series of experiments, including single filament elongation studies, single filament stretching measurements with optical tweezers, filament-filament interaction measurements with four optical tweezers, microrheology, and isotropic cell stretching, we characterize how electrostatic (pH and ion concentration) and hydrophobic interactions (detergent) provide various mechanisms by which the mechanics of the IF cytoskeleton can be tuned. These studies reveal how small changes, such as charge shifts, influence IF mechanics on multiple scales. In combination with simulations, we determine the mechanisms by which charge shifts alter single vimentin filament mechanics and we extract energy landscapes for interactions between single filaments. Such insights will provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which cells can maintain their integrity and adapt to the mechanical requirements set by their environment.

Description: How can one imagine the emergence and development of a scientific discipline? Can it be compared to the growth of a tree in the forest, which at first grows from tender beginnings and under the umbrella of the big ones, gaining strength and girth in order to finally be able to assert its place and habitat, dependent on the sustained supply of vital substances and symbioses, on an environment appropriate to it, yet always endangered by competition and unforeseeable misfortunes? It is certain that the "tree of knowledge", the science of the forest and its relations to the natural and social environment, had already left the juvenile stage behind it when a second Prussian forestry school opened its doors as a school of sustainability in Hann. Münden in 1868. The focus was on training forestry administrators for service in northern, central and western Germany. However, even in the early phase of the Forestry Academy, the teachers were called to Münden as scientists, primarily to clarify day-to-day questions of forest management in coordination with practice.Using the example of the Münden Forestry Academy, from which the Göttingen Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology was later to emerge, this volume provides a look at the development of the professional foundations and the formation of forestry science. He describes the content of research in its dependence on factors from practice, science, politics and society. Also of interest is the question of what influence the fear of closure of the institution had on research strategy programmes during the period under study and how the unity of the faculty was preserved. Description: In order to achieve a transition from a transport system centred on the individual car to one centred on (electrified) rail a new focus in infrastructure planning is needed. The preparation of project proposals for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 on the sub-national level in Germany provides an opportunity to study decision-making processes in ministries and compare their respective results in this respect. Using document analysis, expert interviews, qualitative content analysis as well as QCA, this thesis in political science analyses how decision-making processes within bureaucracies impact the decision output in transport infrastructure planning. It contributes to the discussion on bureaucracy-politics interactions that is relevant beyond the German case. One result is that ministries tend to use complex decision-making processes for topics deemed salient as long as the available capacity permits it. Consequently, in order to conduct legitimacy-enhancing steps – such as public participation – a well-funded bureaucracy is indispensable.

Description: This dissertation examines intelligence surveillance of private telecommunications and its compatibility with the international human right to privacy in Art. 17 ICCPR and in Art. 8 ECHR. These articles provide comprehensive protection against the most modern forms of surveillance including bulk interception. Several criteria apply in terms of the foreseeability of the surveillance laws. Telecommunication’s interception should be subject to authorisation and supervision by independent authorities and effective remedies should be available. Moreover, the study analyzes the extent to which the surveilling state and the state of residence violate their human rights obligations in cases of cross-border surveillance. The main question is whether the established definitions of "jurisdiction" are applicable to this extraterritorial scenario. The extraterritorial exercise of jurisdiction can also be based on effective control over specific objects relevant to human rights. According to this approach, telecommunications data are objects relevant to individual’s right to correspondence and data protection.

Description: It is rare for a physician to be disbarred; it is even rarer for the disbarment to have a retroactive effect back to the time of granting. The prerequisite for this effect is that the license to practice medicine should not have been granted in the first place, either because the requirements for the training of the future physician were not met or because character defects (unworthiness, unreliability) prevented the person concerned from working as a physician. Although practically rare, the revocation of a license to practice medicine is of particular academic interest because it ultimately results in the entire medical activity of the person affected being subsequently deprived of its legal basis. Strictly speaking, in consequence, each medical intervention becomes unlawful, thus (under certain circumstances) constituting a bodily injury under criminal law as well as giving rise to liability for damages under civil law. However, neither the criminal nor the civil law consequences of such retroactivity have yet been examined in a scientifically sound manner, even to a rudimentary degree. The present dissertation is intended to close this gap, at least in the area of civil law.

Description: Latin America and the German-speaking countries of Central Europe have for a long time maintained multifaceted and dynamic relations. This close interaction has also had a significant impact on the history and present of institutional Germanic studies in Latin America. There are, however, country-specific differences: while in the case of some locations there is only a rudimentary area of Germanic Studies, in others it is quite broadly established. The main purpose of this volume is to trace the existing diversity. The idea for the publication emerged during the 16th Congress of the Latin American Association of Germanists (ALEG) in Buenos Aires in December 2017. Within the framework of the section "History of Germanic Studies", the need for an anthology with contributions in German became evident, in which the developments and perspectives of Germanic studies in the various Latin American countries and regions are reviewed and discussed. Academics from across Latin America agreed to share insights and findings on the aims and foci of Germanic studies for the book project to be realized. Since the institutional framework of the discipline varies widely in Latin America, the initiators assume a broad concept of Germanic studies that encompasses the teaching and research of literary and cultural studies, as well as linguistic and translation studies, teacher training and the teaching of the German language itself. The anthology combines a total of 22 articles from eleven countries, written by 39 authors, and thus provides a broad and diverse view of the situation of Germanistic studies in Latin America. It includes overviews and analyses from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Description: The basement of the façade of the San Rufino at Assisi is part of the newly erected Cathedral, which can be dated between 1140 and about 1240. Its extensive décor shows the self-confidence of its sole initiators, the Canons of the Cathedral. On the one hand the present treatise is addressed at the differentiated planar structuring on behalf of a large-scaled framing with a salient arched corbel course and the debate of its derivation. Thereby the framing of the reliefs next to the main portal on the façade of San Pietro fuori le mura at Spoleto receives specific consideration, also in comparison with the different types of relief-framing of several churches in the southwestern Mediterranean area. On the other hand the diversified decorative repertoire of the façade-basement at Assisi is brought into focus in this treatise. In this context special attention is paid to the so far rudimentarily investigated motives of the presentations, their origin and distribution.

The main purpose of the present book is to examine and review some specific aspects relevant to the question of international legal responsibility of international organizations, mainly, with a view to assessing the International Law Commission’s work on the codification of the international legal rules applicable on international organizations in this area. At the same time, the intention is to address the major challenge to the codification of general rules for international organizations, namely, their wide-varying nature and their differences from each other. Furthermore, the perspective has been enlarged by elaborating on the broader concept of accountability of international organizations.

Description: The study outlines the status quo of international cooperation in competition law matters. This is done by examining, in chronological order, the various approaches of the many multi- and bi-lateral international agreements that have attempted to solve the problems of competition law (WTO, GATT, etc.). Subsequently, the focus of this thesis is on the analysis of bilateral trade agreements. Within the framework of this analysis, the potential of trade agreements for competition law cooperation is to be shown. For this reason, only those bilateral trade agreements are analyzed that deal with the topic of regulatory cooperation in competition law in specially provided competition chapters. In doing so, the different stages of cooperation will be analyzed along the different integration phases of any trade agreements. The highest form of trade agreement integration – customs unions – will be dealt with separately, using the EU as an example.

Description: The cardiac function relies on an intricate molecular and cellular three-dimensional (3d) architecture of a complex, dense and co-dependent cellular network. Structural alterations of the cardiac structure can affect its essential function and lead to severe dysfunction of the organ. Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death worldwide with a rising incidence. However, it is not possible to give a generalized answer how the heart is formed. Up to now, cardiac structure as well as physiologic and disease-related tissue alterations of the tissue are mainly investigated by established 2d imaging methods such as optical microscopy or electron microscopy. This work presents a multiscale and multimodal X-ray imaging approach, which allows to probe the heart structure from the scale of entire intact murine hearts to the molecular organisation of the sarcomer structure. While the molecular structure of the actomyosin complex is probed by scanning X-ray diffraction, the 3d arrangement of the cellular network is investigated by propagation-based X-ray phase-contrast tomography. In this context, the concept of 3d virtual histology of cardiac tissue by X-ray phase-contrast tomography using laboratory sources as well as highly coherent synchrotron radiation is being further developed.

Description: The purchase of additional items in videogames, also called ‘Microtransactions’, has recently grown to become one of the dominating methods of monetization in the games industry. However, many versions of these monetization schemes face severe backlash because it appears that the ways to monetize games are increasingly influencing the contents of the medium and that those games are purposefully designed to bring vulnerable players to spend more money than they meant to. In this thesis, those points of criticism were taken into consideration and as a starting point to explore the legality of these kinds of monetization schemes from a legal standpoint. This was done with regards to the Unfair Competition Law, Youth Protection regulation and general civil law. Also, the chance-based variant of microtransactions, the so called ‘Lootboxes’, have been examined with regard to their legality under gambling regulations.

Description: The clash of June 1967, called by Israelis the Six-Day War and by Palestinians the Naksa (setback), is a critical milestone within the longstanding Israeli- Palestinian conflict. Despite all the scholarly attention ever since, there remain unheard voices and untold stories. It is the personal stories of people in the region that are at the center of this book. How do they remember 1967? How were their lives affected, even changed dramatically as a result of that short war? Listening to their stories as told some 50 years later, an incomplete tapestry of memories and understandings emerge. This book is the product of a re- search collaboration among Palestinian, Israeli and European folklorists, cultural anthropologists and sociologists. The personal stories were collected in the framework of interviews with men and women from all walks of life, on the days before, during and after this dramatic confrontation. The book is comprised of eleven chapters based on a corpus of several hundred conversations, as well as eight representative interviews. Together they afford insight into differential memories and sensations, visions of euphoria and despair, newly revived hopes, pain and disappointment, disillusionment and repentance.

Description: The expansion of all-day schools should lead, among other things, to a changed teaching and learning culture that promotes motivational-affective competencies in students. But even after 20 years, all-day elementary schools do not seem to fulfill this. Scientific quality criteria are too rarely implemented in elementary schools. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the effect of an (interlocked) extracurricular science program on elementary school students regarding their motivational-affective characteristics. For this purpose, an (interlocked) offer was implemented in the intervention study, whereby this was linked to physical education in half of the schools. The analysis of the questionnaires of 236 pupils showed that participation in a science offer can be profitable, but that the interlocking is not as highly effective as expected. The study suggests changing the intra-school structure and revising the understanding of interlocking.

Description: The present qualitative interview study has set itself the task of reappraising the developments from the emergence to the official ban of the German-speaking Islamic Circle (DIK) and the associated mosque. In order to approach the question of how it was possible for a radical Islamic mosque to emerge and establish itself in the middle of Hildesheim's Nordstadt, we use the "hotbed" approach1 as a basis for analysis. According to this approach, the geographic distribution of the places of origin of those who left to fight in IS territory is by no means evenly distributed; rather, certain places or neighborhoods stand out in which recurring factors that condition radicalization can be identified. To examine why the now-banned Hildesheim mosque association around the convicted "IS chief recruiter" in Germany, Ahmad A. alias "Abu Walaa," became a hotbed, we conducted a total of nine interviews in the spring and summer of 2021. We spoke with members of the local Muslim community and former visitors of the DIK mosque, non-Muslim persons living in the immediate vicinity of the mosque, as well as with representatives of authorities, institutions and civil society institutions. The empirical material is supplemented by an analysis of Abu Walaa's social media content, in particular his Telegram channels, as well as by recordings of various court hearings of the criminal trial against Abu Walaa that we attended. Description: Throughout the world, ‘3.11’ and ‘Fukushima’ are used as synonyms for catastrophe, despair and insecurity. In a search for sociocultural meaning in the catastrophic events of ‘3.11’, Wiebke Grimmig examines the role of contemporary Japanese artists in the process by which Japanese society has handled the effects of this triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami and atomic disaster) in Fukushima. She focuses on the emotional processing of these events by her respondents, including their biographical background, their economic concerns and the role of contemporary art in Japanese society. This anthropological research involves the analysis of in-depth interviews with contemporary artists from Tokyo, as well as from other locations along the east coast of Japan. This research was conducted over a 12-month period to elucidate the catastrophic events and effects of the ‘3.11’ disaster. In this work, Wiebke Grimmig examines how contemporary Japanese artists portray catastrophic events in terms of emotion, individuality, power, resilience, politics, economics and communication in their biographical narrative and their work. This doctoral thesis provides an important contribution to the socio-scientific field of disaster research.

The work traces this development by looking at various fields that build on each other both thematically and chronologically. London, as the center of the British Empire, and Berlin, as the emerging metropolis of Prussia, represent two ideal areas for comparison. On the basis of seven selected formations of practice - the art academies, the artist's journey, the exhibition system, art criticism, private art collections, the emergence of the modern art museum, and the funeral ceremonies of famous artists - a comparative cultural history of the emergence of the figure of the artist and the artistic field is sketched.

Description: Central Asia and Siberia are characterized by multiethnic societies formed by a patchwork of often small ethnic groups. At the same time large parts of them have been dominated by state languages, especially Russian and Chinese. On a local level the languages of the autochthonous people often play a role parallel to the central national language. The contributions of this conference proceeding follow up on topics such as: What was or is collected and how can it be used under changed conditions in the research landscape, how does it help local ethnic communities to understand and preserve their own culture and language? Do the spatially dispersed but often networked collections support research on the ground? What contribution do these collections make to the local languages and cultures against the backdrop of dwindling attention to endangered groups? These and other questions are discussed against the background of the important role libraries and private collections play for multiethnic societies in often remote regions that are difficult to reach.

Description: "Our Faculty of Theology is really and truly the only Faculty of Theology from which something great and effective in the sense of the new state can be made if the Ministry is determined to rebuild. Dean Emanuel Hirsch to Rector Friedrich Neumann on June 16, 1934On a broad source basis, Hansjörg Buss deals with the theological faculty of the State University of Göttingen in the first half of the 20th century. The significance and influence of the new theological approaches of the interwar period as well as the social and political challenges on institutional action, research, teaching, administration, and journalism are examined, with the situation of the student body also being considered for the first time. It is shown that the faculty at no time found a positive relationship to the Weimar Republic. During the National Socialist dictatorship, the 'church struggle' and ideological competitive pressure from the Nazi state narrowed its scope. Plans to create a German-Christian flagship faculty fell through, hopes and disillusionment, loyalty to the state and opposition to church policy, academic continuity and institutional struggle for existence determined its further path. The collapse of the German Reich in May 1945 ushered in a far greater caesura: The personnel reorganization was connected with a theological reorientation that left a lasting mark on the faculty. The author: Dr. Hansjörg Buss, born in 1971, studied history, political science and law (public law). The present work was made possible by a three-year research fellowship from the Göttingen Faculty of Theology. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Description: In the context of testing and examination, the assessment of texts presents a particular challenge. Since textual competence cannot be measured directly, it is assessed indirectly via textuality criteria. In the field of foreign language testing, a target-oriented text production is set as a task; this is also the case in the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang = German Language Test for University Entrance). DSH text productions are evaluated by means of an analytical evaluation sheet with textuality criteria and in case of passing the exam reported in three levels: DSH-1, DSH-2 and DSH-3. This paper deals with an investigation conducted on DSH text productions to determine which textuality criteria are characteristic for each DSH.

To unify these contrasts was the purpose of the 46th Annual Convention of the Association for German as a Foreign and a Second Language (FaDaF e.V.) in Chemnitz from 28 to 30 March 2019. The proceedings of this conference comprise contributions from both academic research and practice in the area of teaching German as a Foreign or Second Language as well as the Associations’ resolution concerning the recent German Immigration Act for Skilled Workers. Thematically, the contributions focus on didactics and methodology of German language teaching, transnational networking and the many facets of understanding – from language comprehension to (intercultural) hermeneutics. Opening with contributions from the young academics’ conference held prior to the annual convention, the volume Teaching – Networking – Understanding attempts to unify the many interfaces of research and practice.

Description: Since 2019, the Research and Documentation Center for the Analysis of Political and Religious Extremisms in Lower Saxony (FoDEx) has been managing the estate of the right-wing extremist multifunctionalist Hans-Michael Fiedler. The processing and evaluation of the legacy makes it possible to make previously untapped sources accessible to research and the (specialist) public. The indexing of the material opens up new perspectives on a central actor of the radical right in Germany as well as its networks in order to better understand the political structures of right-wing radicalism in the long term. This study presents initial results by first focusing on Fiedler's political biographical development from the perspective of actor-centered right-wing extremism research. Using this radical right actor as an example, it analyzes the genesis of the radical right in southern Lower Saxony from the 1960s to the early 1990s. Description: Classes with a special emphasis (so-called profile classes) represent a central element of current school development processes and are considered as one of the most prominent ways of practical implementation of school autonomy. At the secondary level, profile classes in music and science (music and STEM classes) are becoming increasingly popular. Specific features of profile classes (including additional lessons, innovative and practice-based teaching and learning formats, and the involvement of student labs) are associated with various pedagogical potentials – especially in terms of fostering students’ interest and their self-concept. However, there is a research gap regarding the development of students’ subject-related interests and their self-concept in profile classes at the secondary level. The findings of the present study indicate differences in the development of the interests in music and science as well as the domain-specific self-concept between music classes, STEM classes and classes without a specific profile. Using cross-lagged-panel-models, the longitudinal relations among interest and self-concept are estimated in addition to the correlations of the constructs within each wave and the autoregressive effects within each construct over time. In this regard, differences in the cross-lagged panel models between profile classes and classes without a specific profile are examined. The results allow an evaluation of the potential of profile classes in order to promote students’ interest and self-concept and offer a variety of implications for pedagogical practice.

Description: It is common practice for patients in a hospital to be treated by the on-duty physician. If patients want to be treated by a certain physician, then they are subject to additional charges. This is referred to as ‘chief physician treatment’ because it is often chief physicians who are selected to carry out treatment. Commonly, chief physicians are considered to be particularly experienced and competent. But even if a chief physician treatment is contractually agreed with the patient, in many cases it is not the chief physicians who provide the individual treatment services. Sometimes they do not even participate in the treatment at all but nevertheless all the services are billed as chief physician treatment. Whether and the extent to which the law allows this kind of practice, is the subject of this dissertation.

Description: Cord Borgentrik (about 1430-1501) was a quite successful image carver with an own large studio in Braunschweig in the second half of the 15th century. Traces of his activity which show the influence of Dutch realism are to be found in the region of Braunschweig, in Westphalia, in the region around Goettingen, Gandersheim, and in Halle. The study discusses two of his major altarpieces that have survived. It focusses on how iconography and spiritual message of the works are dependent on the ideas of Borgentrik´s monastic commissioners. The Mary Retable of the parish church of Hemmerde in Westphalia which was completed in 1483 and even signed by Borgentrik (now in the Städtische Museum Braunschweig) was commissioned by the Premonstratensian monks of the monastery of Scheda, whereas the Mary Retable of St. Nicolai church in Alfeld (Lower Saxony), which long can be found in the Minoritenkirche Cologne, was commissioned by the Cistercian monks of Marienrode. In both cases Mary is shown as Regina Coeli in the way the Byzantine Hodegetria is represented. The study analyzes the Christological and Mariological presuppositions that underlie the iconography of both retables.

Description: The dissertation analyzes the German and European legal situation and the development of case law on the subject of transgender identity in the system of fundamental and human rights. The work focuses primarily on the case law of the Federal Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights, but also takes a comparative legal approach and deals with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Both the Federal Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights provided important stimulus for legal reforms. The major legal issues examined in the work include the prerequisites for the change of legal gender, the change of first name, the legal consequences of a gender change for the continued existence of a marriage and the recognition of transsexual men and women as fathers or mothers, as well as the legal requirements for the assumption of costs for gender reassignment surgeries.

Description: Processes of individualization in Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Senegal and Tunisia are central to current social dynamics and form the key theme of the present volume. The central question is how social transformations inform the field of the religious and how processes of religious change likewise have an impact on social change. The contributions in this volume focus in particular on the realities of life for women from urban middle-class milieus. They show how women’s efforts to shape one's individual life may run counter to established social and religious norms. While analyzing milieu-specific dynamics, particular attention is devoted to the question how processes of social and religious change become manifest in both gender and generational relations. Western ideals of modernity, globalized discourses and respective leisure/fashion-practices as well as expressions of individualized lifestyles have an impact on dynamics of social and religious change and are discussed in this volume in specific religious as well as non-religious social contexts.

Description: Although the school class is highly relevant for the school organization of instruction, it is predominantly addressed in empirical school research as an explanandum. The sociality of the school class, on the other hand, has hardly been focused on as an empirical object of research. The aim of this paper is to address this desideratum by considering the school class as an object that is constituted in a variety of ways in different discourses. It also asks how classroom teachers construct the school class in everyday-based discourse and relate themselves to it. Different types of data are used to examine how which normative conceptions of school classes are produced in educational, programmatic, and everyday-based discourse. Contributions in scholarly and contemporary practice-instructional literature, as well as specially collected interviews with classroom teachers in secondary schools, serve as data materials. The interviews, as well as the idea for this study, were developed within the framework of the project on making school classes at the Department of Empirical Research on Teaching and School Development at the Institute of Educational Science at the University of Göttingen. Description: It is predicted that church membership in the Protestant church in Germany will be cut in half by 2060. Church tax liability plays a central role in church resignations. Therefore, reform proposals of the church tax law are discussed to prevent church resignations, such as the exemption of young professionals from church tax liability. However, the right to tax is not a purely ecclesiastical matter but has implications for the state sector. Therefore, the collection of church taxes entails framework conditions imposed by the Constitution, which limits the church's freedom of organization. This thesis examines the reform proposals of church tax law regarding their legal feasibility and, in doing so, sheds light on the limits of the tax autonomy of religious communities. Central questions are: How flexible is the taxation right of religious communities? What is the church allowed to do? And what can it implement?

Description: This study treats ecotourism in National Protected Areas of Lao PDR as a “recreational frontier” which instrumentalizes the recreation of human natures in capitalism’s centers for that of nonhuman natures at capitalism’s (closing) frontiers. This world-ecological practice of ecorational instrumentality – i.e. of nature domination in the name of “Nature” – presents a remedy for capitalism’s crisis that is itself crisis-ridden, enacting a central tension of ecocapitalism: that between “conservation” and “development”. This epistemic-institutional tension is traced through the preconditions, modes and effects of ecotourism in Laos by gradually zooming from the most general scale of societal nature relations into the most detailed intricacies of ecotouristic practice. The combination of Bourdieu, Marx and Critical Theory enables a systematic analysis of the recreational frontier as enactment of various contradictions deriving from the “false-and-real” Nature/Society dualism.

Description: What is there left to say about the human condition after the so-called „end of anthropology“? Never before have conceptions of what it means to be a human being been as diverse and fragmented as in the late modern age – with severe consequences for democratic discourse and liberal, „Western“ societies as a whole. Examining the work of American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971), the book presents new insights into the intersection of anthropological thought and ethical orientation. Niebuhr, motivated by his perception of profound political and social crises in „Western“ societies, develops an innovative, pragmatic and „realistic“ type of theological anthropology. His anthropological approach functions as the basis of a much larger endeavor: rescuing Christianity and democracy itself. Reading Niebuhr today opens up a refreshing perspective on current debates on public theology and the so-called „crisis of democracy“. In this context, the book argues, theological anthropology can be reclaimed as an essential social resource: It offers a comprehensive understanding of human nature both at its best and at its worst, providing the indispensable basis for the survival and vitality of democracy.

Description: What are the effects of internal migration controls on migrants without a regular residence permit – on “sans papiers”? The book gives an answer to this question with a comparative study of the United States and Germany. Based on expert interviews and in-depth interviews with forty sans papiers, police controls as well as controls in areas such as labor market, health care, housing, schooling and childcare are carefully analysed. The book discusses whether global economic, political or social processes have restricted the ability of advanced capitalist countries to control migration. It argues that migration policy in the OECD countries has become more similar, but this convergence only takes place at the level of policy goals and legal norms. At the level of implementation, national differences persist. The interviews show that sans papiers in the U.S. continue to have many possibilities to participate in society. In contrast, the comprehensive exclusion of sans papiers in Germany confi rms that there is no general “loss of control”.
Description: Welche Auswirkungen haben interne Migrationskontrollen auf Migrantinnen und Migranten ohne regulären Aufenthaltsstatus - auf »Sans Papiers«?

Presents for the new mother given for example during visits by relatives, friends and neighbours, initially consisted of food and drink. Later they could also include applied art objects. The custom of presenting childbed presents has a long tradition and still partially continues until today. In the present study, applied art objects which can be identified as childbed presents are analyzed and discussed in relation to their art historical development from the early modern period to the early 19th century. In regard to their cultural and historical context, questions about the form, content and function of these gifts will be investigated. In doing so a special field of early modern art and culture becomes accessible for the first time.

Description: The inclusion of works in a canonical list creates a large body of exclusions. But among these neglected works there are not a few that nevertheless are worth reading. Literary worth is not necessarily aesthetic impeccability. A literary work recommends itself by a high degree of artistic achievement with elbowroom for historical importance. The present study focuses on Leo Rosten’s immigration novel The Education of Hyman Kaplan (1937) and Archibald MacLeish’s radio play Air Raid (1938). The first is more than the apparent compendium of language-based jokes. Read in the context of immigration policy from Presidents Theodore Roosevelt to F. D. Roosevelt and of Jewish-American humor, it displays Kaplan’s moral and intellectual growth, which extant commentary denies, and exhibits the “interior internationality” of an immigration country. Air Raid is one of the few achieved American radio plays to take a stand on foreign affairs in a context that does not only consist of broadcasting and Picasso’s collage-painting Guernica – the “screaming picture” which MacLeish transposed into the acoustic medium – but also of the historical saturation bombing of the Basque town.

Description: Electricity generation from renewable sources of energy has had a long history in Germany and is highly topical. This paper deals with both aspects. A sociological analysis of technology shows how innovative technologies gradually emerged from the Utopian vision of 'velvet' energies, which became the basis of the rapidly growing regenerative electricity production. The second aspect of the paper is an analysis of the growing potential - as well as possible obstacles - of regenerative energies. The expansion of energy production from renewable sources and the tendency towards the concentration of such installations (e.g. large wind farms or solar parks) is increasingly met with opposition from the public. In addition, it is felt that considerable changes in the energy sector can only be successful if its promoters become more active.

Description: The liberal professions are subject to an ever changing legal basis and thus constantly undergo minor or major amendments. A fundamental innovation in the current law governing the liberal professions of tax consultants is the authorization to work as in-house tax consultants. Since 2008, the Tax Consultancy Act has made possible to pursue the profession of in-house tax advisor, while lawyers were allowed to work in-house for decades already, with the last amendment of the legal regulations from 2016. This paper deals with the various legal and practical implications of the interactions between the freelance activity as a tax consultant and the activity of in-house tax consultants in an employment relationship. A detailed comparison of the legal basis for tax consultants with that of in-house lawyers is of special interest in light of the current ambiguous legal situation. Special focus is a thorough analysis of the legal question whether or not an in-house tax adviser can be exempted from the obligatory pension insurance.

Attention is given not only to the continuity, but also to the adaptations and changes of the forms and content of family traditioning. The linking of a generational perspective with Halbwachs' considerations of collective memory opens up several comparison options. In addition to capturing familial, generational and regional similarities and differences, the dynamics of familial tradition can be worked out in this way.

Description: Taking media scholar Henry Jenkins’s concept of ‘convergence culture’ and the related notions of ‘participatory culture’ and ‘transmedia storytelling’ as points of departure, the essays compiled in the present volume provide terminological clarification, offer exemplary case studies, and discuss the broader implications of such developments for the humanities. Most of the contributions were originally presented at the transatlantic conference 〈i〉Convergence Culture Reconsidered〈/i〉 organized by the editors at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany, in October 2013. Applying perspectives as diverse as literary, cultural, and media studies, digital humanities, translation studies, art history, musicology, and ecology, they assemble a stimulating wealth of interdisciplinary and innovative approaches that will appeal to students as well as experts in any of these research areas.

Description: In this cultural anthropological examination Frauke Johanna Ahrens enquires into the scientific significance of the herbarium sheets of the Herbarium Göttingen in the period from 1832 to 1852. Based on a historical, object-focused ethnography and praxeology she itemizes how during the establishing phase of the collection institutionalized in 1832 the scientific practices and epistemic interests mutually influenced one another and found expression in the botanical specimens themselves. Each of the five chapters is dedicated to one practice – opening up the collection, ascribing values, acquiring plant material, doing research on herbarium sheets and teaching with herbarium sheets. Together with detailed object descriptions, the analysis emphasizes the materiality of knowledge in this way.

Description: The increased detection of doping in professional sports has led to a strengthening of the discussion on the legal aspects of doping. So far criminal and/ or verbandsrechtliche questions were the focus. For example the question of whether and how sponsorship contracts may be terminated in cases of misconduct of the sponsored. First, it examines how appropriate cancellation clauses could be like. Second, consider the conditions under which, even without explicit rules for doping a termination in accordance with general principles of contract law is concerned. It also discusses the legal consequences of termination, and in particular its relationship to other contractual consequences of doping, such as claims for damages or penalties.

Description: After realising their theses’ topics were all related to environmental and human sustainability, a group of young researchers from the Erasmus Mundus International Masters in Global Markets, Local Creativities decided they could take action by sharing their research findings in an easily-understandable, non-academic language, impacting communities outside the academic bubble by making knowledge accessible. This book is the result of the ambition of this group of researchers to critically discuss the main issues of our times: environmental emergency and social inequality. Through a collection of thought-provoking case studies, the reader is invited to reflect upon global issues, from the perspective of local initiatives, considering three main aspects of globalisation: space, global dynamics and social scene, and the role of institutions.

Description: This study analyses legal barriers to data sharing in the context of the Open Research Data Pilot, which the European Commission is running within its research framework programme Horizon2020. In the first part of the study, data protection issues are analysed. The main focus is on the Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC) and its implementation in selected EU Member States. Additionally, the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (2016/679/EU) and relevant changes are described. Special focus is placed on leading data protection principles. Next, the study describes the use of research data in the Open Research Data Pilot and how data protection principles influence such use. The experiences of the European Commission in running the Open Research Data Pilot so far, as well as basic examples of repository use forms, are considered. The second part of the study analyses the extent to which legislation on public sector information (PSI) influences access to and re-use of research data. The PSI Directive (2003/98/EC) and the impact of its revision in 2013 (2013/37/EU) are described. There is a special focus on the application of PSI legislation to public libraries, including university and research libraries, and its practical implications. In the final part of the study the results are critically evaluated and core recommendations are made to improve the legal situation in relation to research data.

Description: This study reveals that in medieval Dutch vernacular texts (from the Brabantine authors Jan van Boendale, Lodewijk van Velthem, and Jan van Leeuwen, and in the anonymous Boek van Sidrac) the treatment of individual and universal eschatological topics and themes, such as death, heaven, hell, purgatory, the Antichrist, eschatological people, and Judgement Day is dedicated to moral and ethical guidance to prepare oneself during lifetime for the afterlife. Central to all texts is the fate of the souls in the afterlife and guidelines to assure redemption on Judgment Day. This includes the ability to recognize the signs of the End properly. The vernacular eschatological discourse is considered as an inherent part of the intellectual emancipation of the laity in the later Middle Ages. This book is of interest not only to Dutch and German philologists, but also to historians and anyone interested in the history of religion, especially of eschatology and apocalypticism. This study was awarded with the 2013 Mgr. C. de Clercqprijs of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten (Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts) for an outstanding work in the field 'History of Religions of Flanders'.

Description: Social perspective defines the human skill of changing between the point of view of oneself and the other. It takes meta-perspectives and applies them to the different (suspected) point of views. If one knows how the interaction-partner sees the world, one can assume the partner´s willingness to act and consider it for one´s own plan of action.

Description: Although the discussion of the ethical, legal and medical problems of (late) abortion, prenatal diagnosis and embryopathic findings continues since the reform of the Pregnant Women and Family Welfare Amendment Act of 1995 and the related elimination of embryopathic indication for almost fifteen years, convincing solutions are still missing. This volume contains the contributions of the 3rd Workshop on Medical Law conducted on February 26 2008. They remind of the urgent need for reform and offer suggestions for the legal policy debate. In the focus of the contributions stand the (criminal) legal and medico-ethical "evaluation" of human life before birth and the question of how the involved professionals can handle their responsibility with the issue of a embryopathic findings, to ensure that the pregnant patient receives help and support during her emotionally stressful decision-making process, but also consider the right to life of the unborn child (especially in cases of extra-uterine viable).

Description: The Internet has enabled new forms of large-scale collaboration. Voluntary contributions by large numbers of users and co-producers lead to new forms of production and innovation, as seen in Wikipedia, open source software development, in social networks or on user-generated content platforms as well as in many firm-driven Web 2.0 services. Large-scale collaboration on the Internet is an intriguing phenomenon for scholarly debate because it challenges well established insights into the governance of economic action, the sources of innovation, the possibilities of collective action and the social, legal and technical preconditions for successful collaboration. Although contributions to the debate from various disciplines and fine-grained empirical studies already exist, there still is a lack of an interdisciplinary approach.

Description: Natural disasters are a challenge for human societies. The young German nation that reacted in the face of the 100-year Rhine flood (1882/83) can be characterized by the key elements of science, technology, economy, administration, and national consciousness. Given this framework the main actors used the disaster to expand their influence (e.g. scientific research) and to establish solidly relations. In sum, dealing with a natural disaster like the Rhine flood can only be understood in the opposing terms of risk and opportunity.

Description: This research unravels the economic collapse of the Datoga pastoralists of central and northern Tanzania from the 1830s to the beginning of the 21st century. The research builds from the broader literature on continental African pastoralism during the past two centuries. Overall, the literature suggests that African pastoralism is collapsing due to changing political and environmental factors. My dissertation aims to provide a case study adding to the general trends of African pastoralism, while emphasizing the topic of competition as not only physical, but as something that is ethnically negotiated through historical and collective memories. There are two main questions that have guided this project: 1) How is ethnic space defined by the Datoga and their neighbours across different historical times? And 2) what are the origins of the conflicts and violence and how have they been narrated by the state throughout history? Examining archival sources and oral interviews it is clear that the Datoga have struggled through a competitive history of claims on territory against other neighbouring communities. The competitive encounters began with the Maasai entering the Serengeti in the 19th century, and intensified with the introduction of colonialism in Mbulu and Singida in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fight for control of land and resources resulted in violent clashes with other groups. Often the Datoga were painted as murderers and impediments to development. Policies like the amalgamation measures of the British colonial administration in Mbulu or Ujamaa in post-colonial Tanzania aimed at confronting the “Datoga problem,” but were inadequate in neither addressing the Datoga issues of identity, nor providing a solution to their quest for land ownership and control.
