    Description: Das vorliegende Open-Access-Buch folgt der übergreifenden Fragestellung, ob ein Kritiklernen im institutionell gebundenen politischen Unterricht möglich ist. Diese Fragestellung wird nicht aus einer institutionen- und schulsoziologischen, sondern aus einer lerntheoretischen und politikdidaktischen Perspektive entwickelt. Der Analysefokus richtet sich damit auf die Frage, wie subjektorientierte Lernprozesse in einer Gesellschaft strukturiert werden können, die durch spezifische soziale Verhältnisse geprägt ist. Das Kernanliegen der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht in der Erschließung der Gedankenwelt Antonio Gramscis für die aktuelle lerntheoretische und politikdidaktische Debatte. Dabei soll der Nachweis der analytischen Ergiebigkeit zentraler Kategorien aus den Schriften Antonio Gramscis, insbesondere der Hegemonie und des Alltagsverstandes, über den Weg einer systematischen Reflexion einschlägiger Sinnbildkonstruktionen geführt werden, denen in der aktuellen Fachdebatte eine zentrale Bedeutung zukommt. Aus einer hegemonietheoretisch gestützten konstruktiven Kritik der Sinnbildkonstruktionen werden Schlussfolgerungen für eine Theorie von Bildungs- und Lernprozessen gezogen, die sich in den Kontext der kritischen politischen Bildung einordnen lassen.

    Description: Central Peripheries explores post-Soviet Central Asia through the prism of nation-building. Although relative latecomers on the international scene, the Central Asian states see themselves as globalized, and yet in spite of – or perhaps precisely because of – this, they hold a very classical vision of the nation-state, rejecting the abolition of boundaries and the theory of the ‘death of the nation’. Their unabashed celebration of very classical nationhoods built on post-modern premises challenges the Western view of nationalism as a dying ideology that ought to have been transcended by post-national cosmopolitanism. Marlene Laruelle looks at how states in the region have been navigating the construction of a nation in a post-imperial context where Russia remains the dominant power and cultural reference. She takes into consideration the ways in which the Soviet past has influenced the construction of national storylines, as well as the diversity of each state’s narratives and use of symbolic politics. Exploring state discourses, academic narratives and different forms of popular nationalist storytelling allows Laruelle to depict the complex construction of the national pantheon in the three decades since independence. The second half of the book focuses on Kazakhstan as the most hybrid national construction and a unique case study of nationhood in Eurasia. Based on the principle that only multidisciplinarity can help us to untangle the puzzle of nationhood, Central Peripheries uses mixed methods, combining political science, intellectual history, sociology and cultural anthropology.     Description: Diese Open-Access-Publikation untersucht die Akzeptanz der sächsischen Bevölkerung gegenüber Energie- und Rohstoffvorhaben sowie die Eignung von Kommunikationsmaßnahmen zur Verbesserung des Akzeptanzniveaus. Die Bürger:innen werden erstmals repräsentativ zu ihrer (In-)Akzeptanz gegenüber Anlagearten befragt. Dabei wird nachgewiesen, dass die Akzeptanz bei lokalen Projekten immer geringer ist als soziopolitisch. Bei den erneuerbaren Energieumwandlungsanlagen ist die Akzeptanz gegenüber Wasserkraft- und Solaranlagen am höchsten, gegenüber Biomasseanlagen am geringsten. Fossile Energieumwandlungsanlagen sind weniger akzeptiert und Tage- und Untertagebaue werden am schlechtesten bewertet. Eine vergleichende Befragung der Unternehmensvertreter:innen des Energie- und Rohstoffsektors ergibt eine Dissonanz der von ihnen angenommenen zur erfassten (In-)Akzeptanz der Bevölkerung: Das Akzeptanzniveau ist unabhängig von der Art des Vorhabens geringer, als es die Unternehmensvertreter:innen annehmen. Die Erkenntnisse werden genutzt, um eine Webapplikation zu entwickeln, die es insbesondere kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen ermöglicht, zur Akzeptanzsteigerung geeignete Kommunikationsmaßnahmen auszuwählen.

    Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch liefert Viviane Schachler die erste umfassende Bestandsaufnahme dazu, wie die Mitwirkung und Mitbestimmung in Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen (WfbM) jenseits der rechtlichen Vorgaben tatsächlich ausfällt. Werkstatträte sind die gewählte Interessenvertretung von rund 300.000 Menschen mit Behinderungen in WfbM, wozu seit 2001 die Werkstätten-Mitwirkungsverordnung besteht. Mit einer Mixed-Methods-Studie kann – u. a. in Form von Indizes, Zusammenhangs- und Regressionsanalysen – nachgezeichnet werden, wie aktiv, autonom und durchsetzungsstark die Gremien arbeiten. Damit gelingt es, das Postulat der Partizipation von Menschen mit Behinderungen mit einer konkreten Beteiligungsform näher auszuführen und diese empirisch fundiert in den fachlichen Diskurs der Teilhabeforschung einzuordnen.

    Description: How has the international mobility of Polish citizens intertwined with other influences to shape society, culture, politics and economics in contemporary Poland? The Impact of Migration on Poland offers a new approach for understanding how migration affects sending countries, and provides a wide-ranging analysis of how Poland has changed, and continues to change, since EU accession in 2004. The authors explore an array of social trends and their causes before using in-depth interview data to illustrate how migration contributes to those causes. They address fundamental questions about whether and how Polish society is becoming more equal and more cosmopolitan, arguing that for particular segments of society migration does make a difference, and can be seen as both leveller and eye-opener. While the book focuses mainly on stayers in Poland, and their multiple contacts with Poles in other countries, Chapter 9 analyses ‘Polish society abroad’, a more accurate concept than ‘community’ in countries like the UK, and Chapter 10 considers impacts of immigration to Poland. The book is written in a lively and accessible style, and will be important reading for anyone interested in the influence of migration on society, as well as students and scholars researching EU mobility, migration theory and methodology, and issues facing contemporary Europe.

    Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht Marco Lünich der Annahme verbreiteter Glaubensüberzeugungen von der Qualität und Wirkmächtigkeit von Big Data nach und analysiert die miteinander in Bezug stehenden gesellschaftlichen Überzeugungen von Erkenntnis- und Nutzengewinnen aus Big Data. Das Aufkommen der digitalen Gesellschaft ist eng verbunden mit wirkmächtigen Narrativen wie etwa der Informations- und Wissensgesellschaft. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch die Möglichkeit der weitreichenden Sammlung und Auswertung von großen digitalen Datenbeständen betont, den sogenannten Big Data. Hervorgehoben wird dabei die besondere Bedeutung von Big Data für die gesellschaftliche Erkenntnis- und Wissensproduktion und den hieraus gezogenen Nutzen. Daher wurde in der Literatur vielfach vermutet, dass sich die Überzeugung von den vermeintlichen Konsequenzen einer Quantifizierung der Welt und vor allem des Sozialen auch in den Köpfen der Menschen verfängt und hierdurch einstellungs- und handlungsrelevant wird. Dieser vermutete Zusammenhang wird im vorliegenden Buch in unterschiedlichen Forschungszusammenhängen des Einsatzes von Technologien Künstlicher Intelligenz empirisch geprüft.

    Description: How was the Roman Empire invoked in Brexit Britain and in Donald Trump’s United States of America, and to what purpose? And why is it critical to answer these kinds of questions? Heritage and Nationalism explores how people’s perceptions and experiences of the ancient past shape political identities in the digital age. It particularly examines the multiple ways in which politicians, parties and private citizens mobilise aspects of the Iron Age, Roman and Medieval past of Britain and Europe to include or exclude ‘others’ based on culture, religion, class, race, ethnicity, etc. Chiara Bonacchi draws on the results of an extensive programme of research involving both data-intensive and qualitative methods to investigate how pre-modern periods are leveraged to support or oppose populist nationalist arguments as part of social media discussions concerning Brexit, the Italian Election of 2018 and the US-Mexican border debate in the US. Analysing 60 million tweets and Facebook posts, comments and replies, this book is the first to use big data to answer questions about public engagement with the past and identity politics.
