    Description: The inhibition effect of the selected heavy metals (Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+) on glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme from Aspergillus niger (EC 1.1.3.4.) was studied using a new amperometric biosensor with an electrochemical transducer based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) covered with a thin layer of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) incorporated with ruthenium(IV) oxide as a redox mediator. Direct adsorption of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and subsequent covering with Nafion® layer was used for immobilization of Gox. The analytical figures of merit of the developed glucose (Glc) biosensor are sufficient for determination of Glc in body fluids in clinical analysis. From all tested heavy metals, mercury(II) has the highest inhibition effect. However, it is necessary to remember that cadmium and silver ions also significantly inhibit the catalytic activity of Gox. Therefore, the development of Gox biosensors for selective indirect determination of each heavy metal still represents a challenge in the field of bioelectroanalysis. It can be concluded that amperometric biosensors, differing in the utilized enzyme, could find their application in the toxicity studies of various poisons.

    Description: The growth of the urban population together with a high concentration of air pollution have important health impacts on citizens who are exposed to them, causing serious risks of the development and evolution of different chronic diseases. This paper presents the design and development of a novel participatory citizen science-based application and data ecosystem model. These developments are imperative and scientifically designed to gather and process perceptual sensing of urban, environmental, and health data. This data acquisition approach allows citizens to gather and generate environment- and health-related data through mobile devices. The sum of all citizens’ data will continuously enrich and increase the volumes of data coming from the city sensors and sources across geographical locations. These scientifically generated data, coupled with data from the city sensors and sources, will enable specialized predictive analytic solutions to empower citizens with urban, environmental, and health recommendations, while enabling new data-driven policies. Although it is difficult for citizens to relate their personal behaviour to large-scale problems such as climate change, pollution, or public health, the developed ecosystem provides the necessary tools to enable a greener and healthier lifestyle, improve quality of life, and contribute towards a more sustainable local environment.

    Description: The demand for electricity has been rising significantly over the past years and it is expected to rise further in the coming years due to economic and societal development. Smart grid technology is being developed in order to meet the rising electricity requirement. In order for the smart grid to perform its full functions, the Energy Management Systems (EMSs), especially Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) are essential. It is necessary to understand the energy demand of the loads and the energy supply either from the national grid or from renewable energy technologies. To facilitate the Demand Side Management (DSM), Heat Pumps (HP) and air conditioning systems are often utilised for heating and cooling in residential houses due to their high-efficiency power output and low CO2 emissions. This paper presents a program for a HEMS using a Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithm. A HP is used as the load and the aim of the optimisation program is to minimise the operational cost, i.e., the cost of electricity, while maintaining end-user comfort levels. This paper also details an indoor thermal model for temperature update in the heat pump control program. Real measured data from the UK Government’s Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) scheme was utilised to generate characteristic curves and equations that can represent the data. This paper compares different PSO variants with standard PSO and the unscheduled case calculated from the data for five winter days in 2019. Among all chosen algorithms, the Crossover Subswarm PSO (CSPSO) achieved an average saving of 25.61% compared with the cost calculated from the measured data with a short search time of 1576 ms for each subswarm. It is clear from this work that there is significant scope to reduce the cost of operating a HP while maintaining end user comfort levels.

    Description: Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects, among other things, the movement patterns of children suffering it. Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors, major symptoms characterizing ADHD, result not only in differences in the activity levels but also in the activity patterns themselves. This paper proposes and trains a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to characterize the moment patterns for normally developing children and uses the trained RNN in order to assess differences in the movement patterns from children with ADHD. Each child is monitored for 24 consecutive hours, in a normal school day, wearing 4 tri-axial accelerometers (one at each wrist and ankle). The results for both medicated and non-medicated children with ADHD, and for different activity levels are presented. While the movement patterns for non-medicated ADHD diagnosed participants showed higher differences as compared to those of normally developing participants, those differences were only statistically significant for medium intensity movements. On the other hand, the medicated ADHD participants showed statistically different behavior for low intensity movements.

    Description: Motion segmentation is aimed at segmenting the feature point trajectories belonging to independently moving objects. Using the affine camera model, the motion segmentation problem can be viewed as a subspace clustering problem—clustering the data points drawn from a union of low-dimensional subspaces. In this paper, we propose a solution for motion segmentation that uses a multi-model fitting technique. We propose a data grouping method and a model selection strategy for obtaining more distinguishable data point permutation preferences, which significantly improves the clustering. We perform extensive testing on the Hopkins 155 dataset, and two real-world datasets. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed method can deal with incomplete trajectories and the perspective effect, comparing favorably with the current state of the art.

    Description: In robot control with physical interaction, like robot-assisted surgery and bilateral teleoperation, the availability of reliable interaction force information has proved to be capable of increasing the control precision and of dealing with the surrounding complex environments. Usually, force sensors are mounted between the end effector of the robot manipulator and the tool for measuring the interaction forces on the tooltip. In this case, the force acquired from the force sensor includes not only the interaction force but also the gravity force of the tool. Hence the tool dynamic identification is required for accurate dynamic simulation and model-based control. Although model-based techniques have already been widely used in traditional robotic arms control, their accuracy is limited due to the lack of specific dynamic models. This work proposes a model-free technique for dynamic identification using multi-layer neural networks (MNN). It utilizes two types of MNN architectures based on both feed-forward networks (FF-MNN) and cascade-forward networks (CF-MNN) to model the tool dynamics. Compared with the model-based technique, i.e., curve fitting (CF), the accuracy of the tool identification is improved. After the identification and calibration, a further demonstration of bilateral teleoperation is presented using a serial robot (LWR4+, KUKA, Germany) and a haptic manipulator (SIGMA 7, Force Dimension, Switzerland). Results demonstrate the promising performance of the model-free tool identification technique using MNN, improving the results provided by model-based methods.

    Description: Self-damage or/and stress-sensing concrete is a promising area of research for measuring the electromechanical response of structural materials using more robust sensors. However, the copper and silver paste sensors widely used in such applications can be expensive and have detrimental effects on the load carrying capacity and durability of the structural systems upon which they are installed. Accordingly, this study compared the performance of four electrode types—conventional copper tape with silver paste (CS), copper film with type 1 carbon tape (CC1), copper film with type 2 carbon tape (CC2), and copper wire and film with type 2 carbon tape (WC2)—to develop an economical and practical electrode for measuring the electromechanical response of self-damage-detecting concrete. The CC1 electrode exhibited comparable performance to the CS electrode in measuring the electromechanical response of self-damage-detecting concrete, despite requiring a longer polarization time (80 s) than the CS electrode (25 s). The CS electrode exhibited a higher damage-sensing capacity (GF2), whereas the CC1 electrode exhibited a higher strain-sensing capacity (GF1), as well as good damage-sensing capacity. Therefore, the CC1 electrode using copper film with type 1 carbon tape was determined to be the best alternative to the conventional CS electrode.

    Description: Heart rate measurement has become one of the most widely used methods of monitoring the intensity of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to assess whether in-ear photoplethysmographic (PPG) pulse rate (PR) measurement devices represent a valid alternative to heart rate derived from electrocardiography (ECG), which is considered a gold standard. Twenty subjects (6 women, 14 men) completed one trial of graded cycling under laboratory conditions. In the trial, PR was recorded by two commercially available in-ear devices, the Dash Pro and the Cosinuss°One. They were compared to HR measured by a Bodyguard2 ECG. Validity of the in-ear PR measurement devices was tested by ANOVA, mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE), intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland–Altman plots. Both devices achieved a MAPE ≤5%. Despite excellent to good levels of agreement, Bland–Altman plots showed that both in-ear devices tend to slightly underestimate the ECG’s HR values. It may be concluded that in-ear PPG PR measurement is a promising technique that shows accurate but imprecise results under controlled conditions. However, PPG PR measurement in the ear is sensitive to motion artefacts. Thus, accuracy and precision of the measured PR depend highly on measurement site, stress situation, and exercise.

    Description: In the present article, we present the experimental results concerning the fine-tuning and optimization of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) parameters by thermal annealing. This treatment allows for the modification of the parameters in order to meet a specific application or to adjust the device parameters to prevent the increase of magnetic field noise and work instability conditions due to a different critical current with respect to the design value. In particular, we report the sensor critical current, the voltage–flux (V–Φ) characteristics and the spectral density of the magnetic field of SQUID magnetometers for different annealing temperatures. The measurements demonstrate that it is possible to achieve a fine control of the most important device parameters. In particular, we show that thermal annealing allows for the reduction of SQUID noise by more than a factor of 5 and makes the device working operations very stable. These results are very useful in view of quantum technology applications related to superconducting quantum computing where the correct functioning of the quantum bit depends on the fine control of the superconducting quantum device parameters and selectable annealing is possible by using a suitable laser as a thermal source.

    Description: Smart flow monitoring is critical for sewer system management. Obstructions and restrictions to flow in discharge pipes are common and costly. We propose the use of electrical resistance tomography modality for the task of smart wastewater metering. This paper presents the electronics hardware design and bespoke signal processing to create an embedded sensor for measuring flow rates and flow properties, such as constituent materials in sewage or grey water discharge pipes of diameters larger than 250 mm. The dedicated analogue signal conditioning module, zero-cross switching scheme, and real-time operating system enable the system to perform low-cost serial measurements while still providing the capability of real-time capturing. The system performance was evaluated via both stationary and dynamic experiments. A data acquisition speed of 14 frames per second (fps) was achieved with an overall signal to noise ratio of at least 59.54 dB. The smallest sample size reported was 0.04% of the domain size in stationary tests, illustrating good resolution. Movements have been successfully captured in dynamic tests, with a clear definition being achieved of objects in each reconstructed image, as well as a fine overall visualization of movement.

    Description: Because medical professionals lack the means to monitor exercises performed by patients in their home environment directly, there is a strong case for introducing technological solutions into this domain. They include methods that use wireless inertial sensors, which emit signals recorded and processed by special applications that work with mobile devices. This paper’s aim is (a) to evaluate whether such sensors are suitable for qualitative and quantitative motion analysis, and (b) to determine the repeatability of results over a few recordings. Knee joint activity was analysed using a system of inertial sensors connected through a Wi-Fi network to mobile devices. The tested individuals did eight different activities, all of which engaged the knee joint. Each excercise was repeated three times. Study results did not reveal any statistically significant differences between the three measurements for most of the studied parameters. Furthermore, in almost every case, there were no statistically significant differences between the results of the right and left lower limb (p 〉 0.05). This study shows that easy use and repeatability of results combined with the feature of quantitative and qualitative analysis make the examined method useful for functional evaluations of the knee joint.

    Description: Mobile cellular communications are experiencing an exponential growth in traffic load on Long Term Evolution (LTE) eNode B (eNB) components. Such load can be significantly contained by directly sharing content among nearby users through device-to-device (D2D) communications, so that repeated downloads of the same data can be avoided as much as possible. Accordingly, for the purpose of improving the efficiency of content sharing and decreasing the load on the eNB, it is important to maximize the number of simultaneous D2D transmissions. Specially, maximizing the number of D2D links can not only improve spectrum and energy efficiency but can also reduce transmission delay. However, enabling maximum D2D links in a cellular network poses two major challenges. First, the interference between the D2D and cellular communications could critically affect their performance. Second, the minimum quality of service (QoS) requirement of cellular and D2D communication must be guaranteed. Therefore, a selection of active links is critical to gain the maximum number of D2D links. This can be formulated as a classical integer linear programming problem (link scheduling) that is known to be NP-hard. This paper proposes to obtain a set of network features via deep learning for solving this challenging problem. The idea is to optimize the D2D link schedule problem with a deep neural network (DNN). This makes a significant time reduction for delay-sensitive operations, since the computational overhead is mainly spent in the training process of the model. The simulation performed on a randomly generated link schedule problem showed that our algorithm is capable of finding satisfactory D2D link scheduling solutions by reducing computation time up to 90% without significantly affecting their accuracy.

    Description: This article focuses on a proposed Switched-Capacitor Dual-Slope based CDC. Special attention is paid to the measurement setup using a real pressure sensor. Performance scaling potential as well as dead zones are pointed out and discussed. In depth knowledge of the physical sensor behavior is key to design an optimal readout circuit. While this is true for high-end applications, low-performance IoT (Internet of Things) sensors aim at moderate resolution with very low power consumption. This article also provides insights into basic MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System) physics. Based on that, an ambient air pressure sensor model for SPICE (Simulation-Program-with-Integrated-Circuit-Emphasis) circuit simulators is presented. The converter concept was proven on silicon in a 0.13 μ m process using both a real pressure sensor and an on-chip dummy MEMS bridge. A 3.2-ms measurement results in 13-bit resolution while consuming 35 μ A from a 1.5-V supply occupying 0.148 mm2. A state-of-the-art comparison identifies potential room for improvements towards hybrid solutions, which is proposed in subsequent publications already.

    Description: A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) liquid refractive index sensor based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed. The PCF is made of the exposed core structure, and the gold film is formed by electron beam evaporation within its defects. The sensitivity of the sensor is improved by coating graphene on the surface of the gold film. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the sensor is increased by 390 nm/RIU after the introduction of graphene, and finally to 2290 nm/RIU. The experiment and simulation have a good consistency. Significantly, the sensor can be reused, and the measurement accuracy can be maintained.

    Description: Drought in Australia has widespread impacts on agriculture and ecosystems. Satellite-based Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) has great potential to monitor and assess drought impacts on vegetation greenness and health. Various FAPAR products based on satellite observations have been generated and made available to the public. However, differences remain among these datasets due to different retrieval methodologies and assumptions. The Quality Assurance for Essential Climate Variables (QA4ECV) project recently developed a quality assurance framework to provide understandable and traceable quality information for Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). The QA4ECV FAPAR is one of these ECVs. The aim of this study is to investigate the capability of QA4ECV FAPAR for drought monitoring in Australia. Through spatial and temporal comparison and correlation analysis with widely used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre (SPOT)/PROBA-V FAPAR generated by Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS), and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) drought index, as well as the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) soil moisture, the study shows that the QA4ECV FAPAR can support agricultural drought monitoring and assessment in Australia. The traceable and reliable uncertainties associated with the QA4ECV FAPAR provide valuable information for applications that use the QA4ECV FAPAR dataset in the future.

    Description: Hydrodynamic coefficients are essential for the development of underwater robots; in particular, for their design and navigation control. To obtain these coefficients, several techniques exist. These methods are usually experimental, but, more recently, some have been designed by a combination of experiments with computational methods based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). One method for obtaining the hydrodynamic coefficients of an ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) is by using an experimental PMM (Planar Motion Mechanism) or CWC (Circular Water Channel); however, the use of these experimental infrastructures is costly. Therefore, it is of interest to obtain these coefficients in other ways, for example, by the use of simple experiments. The Free Decay Test is an ideal type of experiment, as it has a low cost and is simple to implement. In this paper, two different free decay tests were carried out, to which three different methods for obtaining coefficients were applied. They were compared with results obtained by CFD simulation to conduct a statistical analysis in order to determine their behaviours. It was possible to obtain values of the drag and added mass coefficients for the models analysed, where the values were obtained for an Underwater Drone Robot (UDrobot).

    Description: B-spline surfaces possess attractive properties such as a high degree of continuity or the local support of their basis functions. One of the major applications of B-spline surfaces in engineering geodesy is the least-square (LS) fitting of surfaces from, e.g., 3D point clouds obtained from terrestrial laser scanners (TLS). Such mathematical approximations allow one to test rigorously with a given significance level the deformation magnitude between point clouds taken at different epochs. Indeed, statistical tests cannot be applied when point clouds are processed in commonly used software such as CloudCompare, which restrict the analysis of deformation to simple deformation maps based on distance computation. For a trustworthy test decision and a resulting risk management, the stochastic model of the underlying observations needs, however, to be optimally specified. Since B-spline surface approximations necessitate Cartesian coordinates of the TLS observations, the diagonal variance covariance matrix (VCM) of the raw TLS measurements has to be transformed by means of the error propagation law. Unfortunately, this procedure induces mathematical correlations, which can strongly affect the chosen test statistics to analyse deformation, if neglected. This may lead potentially to rejecting wrongly the null hypothesis of no-deformation, with risky and expensive consequences. In this contribution, we propose to investigate the impact of mathematical correlations on test statistics, using real TLS observations from a bridge under load. As besides TLS, a highly precise laser tracker (LT) was used, the significance of the difference of the test statistics when the stochastic model is misspecified can be assessed. However, the underlying test distribution is hardly tractable so that only an adapted bootstrapping allows the computation of trustworthy p-values. Consecutively, the extent to which heteroscedasticity and mathematical correlations can be neglected or simplified without impacting the test decision is shown in a rigorous way, paving the way for a simplification based on the intensity model.

    Description: As one of the most essential technologies, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) integrate sensor technology, embedded computing technology, and modern network and communication technology, which have become research hotspots in recent years. The localization technique, one of the key techniques for WSN research, determines the application prospects of WSNs to a great extent. The positioning errors of wireless sensor networks are mainly caused by the non-line of sight (NLOS) propagation, occurring in complicated channel environments such as the indoor conditions. Traditional techniques such as the extended Kalman filter (EKF) perform unsatisfactorily in the case of NLOS. In contrast, the robust extended Kalman filter (REKF) acquires accurate position estimates by applying the robust techniques to the EKF in NLOS environments while losing efficiency in LOS. Therefore it is very hard to achieve high performance with a single filter in both LOS and NLOS environments. In this paper, a localization method using a robust extended Kalman filter and track-quality-based (REKF-TQ) fusion algorithm is proposed to mitigate the effect of NLOS errors. Firstly, the EKF and REKF are used in parallel to obtain the location estimates of mobile nodes. After that, we regard the position estimates as observation vectors, which can be implemented to calculate the residuals in the Kalman filter (KF) process. Then two KFs with a new observation vector and equation are used to further filter the estimates, respectively. At last, the acquired position estimates are combined by the fusion algorithm based on the track quality to get the final position vector of mobile node, which will serve as the state vector of both KFs at the next time step. Simulation results illustrate that the TQ-REKF algorithm yields better positioning accuracy than the EKF and REKF in the NLOS environment. Moreover, the proposed algorithm achieves higher accuracy than interacting multiple model algorithm (IMM) with EKF and REKF.

    Description: A portable sensor system for the simultaneous detection of multiple environmentally relevant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in real seawater based on Fourier transform infrared fiber-optic evanescent wave spectroscopy (FT-IR-FEWS) was developed. A cylindrical silver halide (AgX) fiber with an ethylene/propylene copolymer (E/P-co) coated flattened segment was used as an active optical transducer. The polymer membrane enriches the hydrophobic analytes, while water is effectively excluded from the penetration depth of the evanescent field. Determination of multicomponent mixtures (i.e., 10 VOCs in real-world seawater samples) collected in Arcachon Bay, France revealed a high accuracy and reproducibility with detection limits down to 560 ppb. The measurement showed no significant influence from changing water conditions (e.g., salinity, turbidity, and temperature or other interfering substances). The time constants for 90% saturation of the polymer ranged from 20 to 60 min. The sensor system is capable of being transported for on-site monitoring of environmental pollutants in aqueous matrices with efficient long-term stability, thus showing great potential to be utilized as an early warning system.

    Description: Here, the development and testing of a portable double peak pulse laser induced plasma spectroscopy (DPP-LIPS) based on passively Q-switched Nd:YAG (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) laser excitation is reported. The latter delivered structured laser pulses at a repetition rate of up to 20 Hz, including two energy peaks of about 100 mJ each with a relative temporal spacing of about 80 µs. Plasma spectra were collected using a low-cost Czerny–Turner spectrometer equipped with a non-intensified CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) array. Such a DPP-LIPS setup is technologically simpler and cheaper than the usual ones. Despite the relatively large temporal separation between the mentioned laser peaks, significant spectral intensity enhancements with respect to the usual single peak pulse configuration were observed. The amplification factor measured ranged between 2 and 10, depending on the specific emission peaks and the Q-switched configuration, and a consequent significant improvement of the detection limit of trace elements was observed. The instrument was calibrated for the quantitative analysis of copper alloy through systematic measurements carried out on reference samples and was then tested in an example archaeometric characterization of a statuette from the Egyptian Museum of Florence.

    Description: The accuracy, reliability, speed and cost of the methods used for malaria diagnosis are key to the diseases’ treatment and eventual eradication. However, improvement in any one of these requirements can lead to deterioration of the rest due to their interdependence. We propose an optical method that provides fast detection of malaria-infected red blood cells (RBCs) at a lower cost. The method is based on the combination of deconvolution, topography and three-dimensional (3D) refractive index reconstruction of the malaria-infected RBCs by use of the transport of intensity equation. Using our method, healthy RBCs were identified by their biconcave shape, quasi-uniform spatial distribution of their refractive indices and quasi-uniform concentration of hemoglobin. The values of these optical and biochemical parameters were found to be in agreement with the values reported in the literature. Results for the malaria-infected RBCs were significantly different from those of the healthy RBCs. The topography of the cells and their optical and biochemical parameters enabled identification of their stages of infection. This work introduces a significant method of analyzing malaria-infected RBCs at a lower cost and without the use of fluorescent labels for the parasites.

    Description: By design, Named Data Networking (NDN) supports pull-based traffic, where content is retrieved only upon consumer request. However, some of the use cases (i.e., emergency situations) in the Internet of Things (IoT) requires push-based traffic, where a producer broadcasts the data based on the emergency situation without any consumer request. Therefore, it is necessary to modify the existing NDN forwarding engine when designing for an IoT scenario. Although solutions are provided to enable push-based traffic in IoT, the main solutions in the current literature lack data broadcast control design. Moreover, the existing solutions use an additional interest messages exchange, which creates extra overheads in the network, thereby resulting in higher delay and lower throughput. In this paper, therefore, we propose a name-based push-data broadcast control scheme for IoT systems, and consider two scenarios, i.e., smart buildings and vehicular networks. The proposed scheme consists of a robust content namespace design, device namespace design, and minor amendments to the data packet format and unsolicited data policy of the forwarding engine as well. The evaluation is carried out for both scenarios. Simulation experiments show that the proposed scheme outperforms the recent proposed schemes in terms of total number of data packets processed in the network, total energy consumption, and average delay in the network by varying the number of data packets per 2 s and varying vehicle speed.

    Description: Metal oxide multi-nanowire-based chemical gas sensors were manufactured by a fast and simple transfer printing technology. A two-step method employing spray pyrolysis deposition and a thermal annealing process was used for SnO 2 nanowires fabrication. A polydimethylsiloxane stamp was used to transfer the SnO 2 nanowires on two different gas sensing devices—Si-based substrates and microhotplate-based platform chips. Both contained a metallic inter-digital electrode structure (IDES), on which the SnO 2 nanowires were transferred for realization of multi-NW gas sensor devices. The gas sensor devices show a very high response towards H 2 S down to the 10 ppb range. Furthermore, a good response towards CO has been achieved, where in particular the microhotplate-based devices exhibit almost no cross sensitivity to humidity.

    Description: The single antenna used in conventional ultra-wideband radar has difficulty tracking targets over a wide range because of a relatively narrow beamwidth. Herein, we propose a beamforming antenna that can track targets over a wide range by electronically controlling the main beam of the antenna. The proposed beamforming antenna was fabricated by connecting a 1 × 4 linear array antenna and a 4 × 4 Butler matrix. The Butler matrix was fabricated in a laminated substrate using two TRF-45 substrates. Furthermore, the input Ports 1–4 generate a phase difference at regular intervals in each output port, and the output phase is fed to the array antenna. The proposed tapered-slot antenna was fabricated on a Taconic TLY substrate, and the impedance bandwidth of the antenna was achieved within a wide bandwidth of 4.32 GHz by satisfying a VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) ≤2 within the 1.45–5.78 GHz band. Furthermore, the fabricated antenna has directional radiation patterns, which was found to be a suitable characsteristic for location tracking in a certain direction. Finally, the beamforming antenna has four beamforming angles, and to verify the performance for an indoor location tracking application of impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar, it was connected to an NVA-R661 module.

    Description: The prevalent methods for monitoring ships are based on automatic identification and radar systems. This applies mainly to large vessels. Additional sensors that are used include video cameras with different resolutions. Such systems feature cameras that capture images and software that analyze the selected video frames. The analysis involves the detection of a ship and the extraction of features to identify it. This article proposes a technique to detect and categorize ships through image processing methods that use convolutional neural networks. Tests to verify the proposed method were carried out on a database containing 200 images of four classes of ships. The advantages and disadvantages of implementing the proposed method are also discussed in light of the results. The system is designed to use multiple existing video streams to identify passing ships on inland waters, especially non-conventional vessels.

    Description: Nowadays, it has been recognized that blockchain can provide the technological infrastructure for developing decentralized, secure, and reliable smart energy grid management systems. However, an open issue that slows the adoption of blockchain technology in the energy sector is the low scalability and high processing overhead when dealing with the real-time energy data collected by smart energy meters. Thus, in this paper, we propose a scalable second tier solution which combines the blockchain ledger with distributed queuing systems and NoSQL (Not Only SQL database) databases to allow the registration of energy transactions less frequently on the chain without losing the tamper-evident benefits brought by the blockchain technology. At the same time, we propose a technique for tamper-evident registration of smart meters’ energy data and associated energy transactions using digital fingerprinting which allows the energy transaction to be linked hashed-back on-chain, while the sensors data is stored off-chain. A prototype was implemented using Ethereum and smart contracts for the on-chain components while for the off-chain components we used Cassandra database and RabbitMQ messaging broker. The prototype proved to be effective in managing a settlement of energy imbalances use-case and during the evaluation conducted in simulated environment shows promising results in terms of scalability, throughput, and tampering of energy data sampled by smart energy meters.

    Description: To analytically evaluate buffeting responses, the analysis of wind characteristics such as turbulence intensity, turbulence length, gust, and roughness coefficient must be a priority. The analytical buffeting response is affected by the static aerodynamic force coefficient, flutter coefficient, structural damping ratio, aerodynamic damping ratio, and natural frequencies of the bridge. The cable-stayed bridge of interest in this study has been used for 32 years. In that time, the terrain conditions around the bridge have markedly changed from the conditions when the bridge was built. Further, the wind environments have varied considerably due to climate change. For these reasons, the turbulence intensity, length, spectrum coefficient, and roughness coefficient of the bridge site must be evaluated from full-scale measurements using a structural health monitoring system. Although the bridge is located on a coastal area, the evaluation results indicated that the wind characteristics of bridge site were analogous to those of open terrain. The buffeting response of the bridge was analyzed using the damping ratios, static aerodynamic force coefficients, and natural frequencies obtained from measured data. The analysis was performed for four cases. Two case analyses were performed by applying the variables obtained from measured data, while two other case analyses were performed based on the Korean Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE) Design Guidelines for Steel Cable Supported Bridges. The calculated responses of each analysis case were compared with the buffeting response measured at wind speeds of less than 25 m/s. The responses obtained by numerical analysis using estimated variables based on full-scale measurements agreed well with the measured buffeting responses measured at wind speeds of less than 25 m/s. Moreover, an extreme wind speed of 44 m/s, corresponding to a recurrence interval of 200 years, was derived from the Gumbel distribution. Therefore, the buffeting responses at wind speeds of 45 m/s were also determined by applying the estimated variables. From these results, management criteria based on measurement data for in-service bridge are determined and each level of management is proposed.

    Description: Turbidity describes the cloudiness, or clarity, of a liquid. It is a principal indicator of water quality, sensitive to any suspended solids present. Prior work has identified the lack of low-cost turbidity monitoring as a significant hurdle to overcome to improve water quality in many domains, especially in the developing world. Low-cost hand-held benchtop meters have been proposed. This work adapts and verifies the technology for continuous monitoring. Lab tests show the low-cost continuous monitor can achieve 1 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU) accuracy in the range 0–100 NTU and costs approximately 64 USD in components to construct. This level of accuracy yields useful and actionable data about water quality and may be sufficient in certain applications where cost is a primary constraint. A 38-day continuous monitoring trial, including a step change in turbidity, showed promising results with a median error of 0.45 and 1.40 NTU for two different monitors. However, some noise was present in the readings resulting in a standard deviation of 1.90 and 6.55 NTU, respectively. The cause was primarily attributed to ambient light and bubbles in the piping. By controlling these noise sources, we believe the low-cost continuous turbidity monitor could be a useful tool in multiple domains.

    Description: Building energy consumption accounts for 30%–45% of the global energy demand. With an ever-increasing world population, it has now become essential to minimize the energy consumption for the future of the environment. One of the most crucial aspects in this regard is the utilization of sensing and environmental monitoring technologies in buildings as these technologies provide stakeholders, such as owners, designers, managers, and occupants, with important information regarding the energy performance, safety and cost-effectiveness of the building. With the global sensors market value predicted to exceed $190 billion by 2021 and the number of sensors deployed worldwide forecasted to reach the ‘1 Trillion’ mark by 2025, a state-of-the-art review of various commercially-viable sensor devices and the wide range of communication technologies that complement them is highly desirable. This paper provides an insight into various sensing and environmental monitoring technologies commonly deployed in buildings by surveying different sensor technologies, wired and wireless communication technologies, and the key selection parameters and strategies for optimal sensor placement. In addition, we review the key characteristics and limitations of the most prominent battery technologies in use today, different energy harvesting sources and commercial off-the-shelf solutions, and various challenges and future perspectives associated with the application of sensing and environmental monitoring technologies within buildings.

    Description: Tuning nonlinearity of the laser is the main source of deterioration of the spatial resolution in optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) system. In this paper, we develop methods for tuning nonlinearity correction in an OFDR system from the aspect of data acquisition and post-processing. An external clock based on a zero-crossing detection is researched and implemented using a customized circuit. Equal-spacing frequency sampling is, therefore, achieved in real-time. The zero-crossing detection for the beating frequency of 20 MHz is achieved. The maximum sensing distance can reach the same length of the auxiliary interferometer. Moreover, a nonlinearity correction method based on the self-reference method is proposed. The auxiliary interferometer is no longer necessary in this scheme. The tuning information of the laser is extracted by a strong reflectivity point at the end of the measured fiber. The tuning information is then used to resample the raw signal, and the nonlinearity correction can be achieved. The spatial resolution test and the distributed strain measurement test were both performed based on this nonlinearity correction method. The results validated the feasibility of the proposed method. This method reduces the hardware and data burden for the system and has potential value for system integration and miniaturization.

    Description: A parametric investigation of the effect of impactor stiffness as well as environmental and operational conditions on impact contact behaviour and the subsequently generated lamb waves in composite structures is presented. It is shown that differing impactor stiffness generates the most significant changes in contact area and lamb wave characteristics (waveform, frequency, and amplitude). A novel impact localisation method was developed based on the above observations that allows for variations due to differences in impactor stiffness based on modifications of the reference database method and the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) time of arrival (ToA) picker. The proposed method was compared against a benchmark method based on artificial neural networks (ANNS) and the normalised smoothed envelope threshold (NSET) ToA extraction method. The results indicate that the proposed method had comparable accuracy to the benchmark method for hard impacts under various environmental and operational conditions when trained only using a single hard impact case. However, when tested with soft impacts, the benchmark method had very low accuracy, whilst the proposed method was able to maintain its accuracy at an acceptable level. Thus, the proposed method is capable of detecting the location of impacts of varying stiffness under various environmental and operational conditions using data from only a single impact case, which brings it closer to the application of data driven impact detection systems in real life structures.

This work explores the possibility of applying technological tools to assist clinicians and professionals to improve the quality of life of people through continuous monitoring of their wellness. The contribution of this paper is manifold: a coarse-grained localization system is responsible for monitoring and collecting data related to patients, while a novel wellness assessment methodology is proposed to extract quantitative indicators related to the well-being of patients from the collected data. The proposed system has been installed at “Il Paese Ritrovato", an innovative health-care facility for Alzheimer’s in Monza, Italy; first satisfactory results have been obtained, and the dataset shows great potential for several applications.

    Description: Biologically inspired to mammalian olfactory system, electronic noses became popular during the last three decades. In literature, as well as in daily practice, a wide range of applications are reported. Nevertheless, the most pioneering one has been (and still is) the assessment of the human breath composition. In this study, we used a prototype of electronic nose, called Wize Sniffer (WS) and based it on an array of semiconductor gas sensor, to detect ammonia in the breath of patients suffering from severe liver impairment. In the setting of severely impaired liver, toxic substances, such as ammonia, accumulate in the systemic circulation and in the brain. This may result in Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE), a spectrum of neuro–psychiatric abnormalities which include changes in cognitive functions, consciousness, and behaviour. HE can be detected only by specific but time-consuming and burdensome examinations, such as blood ammonia levels assessment and neuro-psychological tests. In the presented proof-of-concept study, we aimed at investigating the possibility of discriminating the severity degree of liver impairment on the basis of the detected breath ammonia, in view of the detection of HE at its early stage.

    Description: Artefact conditions need to be continuously monitored to avoid degradation effects naturally caused by time and public exploitation in order to increase the value of cultural assets. In this way, the atmospheric analysis of both biological and chemical pollutants potentially present inside conservation environments represents valid support for the adoption of preventive conservation actions by evaluating periodically the presence of risk for the same artefacts. The aim of the present study was to analyze the fungal particles, potentially biodeteriogen, through aerobiological volumetric monitoring, particularly inside valuable historical, artistic, and cultural sites. Different exposition and conservation typologies of the artefacts with different flows of visitors were considered. The applied methodologies have furnished a reliable description of biological air pollution due to the presence of fungal spores—moreover, they have allowed for the prevention of risk situations and the measurement of their evolution in order to limit degradation processes. Through aerobiological monitoring, it was possible to provide important indications for interventions of prevention, conservation and restoration of cultural heritage in indoor environments.

    Description: This paper sought to improve the precision of the Alternating Current Electro-Occulo-Graphy (AC-EOG) gaze estimation method. The method consisted of two core techniques: To estimate eyeball movement from EOG signals and to convert signals from the eyeball movement to the gaze position. In conventional research, the estimations are computed with two EOG signals corresponding to vertical and horizontal movements. The conversion is based on the affine transformation and those parameters are computed with 24-point gazing data at the calibration. However, the transformation is not applied to all the 24-point gazing data, but to four spatially separated data (Quadrant method), and each result has different characteristics. Thus, we proposed the conversion method for 24-point gazing data at the same time: To assume an imaginary center (i.e., 25th point) on gaze coordinates with 24-point gazing data and apply an affine transformation to 24-point gazing data. Then, we conducted a comparative investigation between the conventional method and the proposed method. From the results, the average eye angle error for the cross-shaped electrode attachment is x = 2.27 ° ± 0.46 ° and y = 1.83 ° ± 0.34 ° . In contrast, for the plus-shaped electrode attachment, the average eye angle error is is x = 0.94 ° ± 0.19 ° and y = 1.48 ° ± 0.27 ° . We concluded that the proposed method offers a simpler and more precise EOG gaze estimation than the conventional method.

    Description: WiFi-based fingerprinting is promising for practical indoor localization with smartphones because this technique provides absolute estimates of the current position, while the WiFi infrastructure is ubiquitous in the majority of indoor environments. However, the application of WiFi fingerprinting for positioning requires pre-surveyed signal maps and is getting more restricted in the recent generation of smartphones due to changes in security policies. Therefore, we sought new sources of information that can be fused into the existing indoor positioning framework, helping users to pinpoint their position, even with a relatively low-quality, sparse WiFi signal map. In this paper, we demonstrate that such information can be derived from the recognition of camera images. We present a way of transforming qualitative information of image similarity into quantitative constraints that are then fused into the graph-based optimization framework for positioning together with typical pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) and WiFi fingerprinting constraints. Performance of the improved indoor positioning system is evaluated on different user trajectories logged inside an office building at our University campus. The results demonstrate that introducing additional sensing modality into the positioning system makes it possible to increase accuracy and simultaneously reduce the dependence on the quality of the pre-surveyed WiFi map and the WiFi measurements at run-time.

    Description: Mobile video applications are becoming increasingly prevalent and enriching the way people learn and are entertained. However, on mobile terminals with inherently limited resources, mobile video streaming services consume too much energy and bandwidth, which is an urgent problem to solve. At present, research on cost-effective mobile video streaming typically focuses on the management of data transmission. Among such studies, some new approaches consider the user’s behavior to further optimize data transmission. However, these studies have not adequately discussed the specific impact of the physical environment on user behavior. Therefore, this paper takes into account the environment-aware watching state and proposes a cost-effective mobile video streaming scheme to reduce power consumption and mobile data usage. First, the watching state is predicted by machine learning based on user behavior and the physical environment during a given time window. Second, based on the resulting prediction, a downloading algorithm is introduced based on the user equipment (UE) running mode in the LTE system and the VLC player. Finally, according to the corresponding experimental results obtained in a real-world environment, the proposed approach, compared to its benchmarks, effectively reduces the data usage (14.4% lower than that of energy-aware, on average) and power consumption (about 19% when there are screen touches) of mobile devices.

    Description: Fault arc detection is an important technology to ensure the safe operation of electrical equipment and prevent electrical fires. The high-frequency noise of the arc current is one of the typical arc characteristics of almost all loads. In order to accurately detect arc faults in a low-voltage alternating-current (AC) system, a novel differential high-frequency current transformer (D-HFCT) sensor for collecting high-frequency arc currents was proposed. The sensitivity and frequency band of the designed sensor were verified to ensure that the acquisition requirements of the high-frequency current were satisfied. A series arc fault simulation experiment system was built, and resistive, inductive, and non-linear load and high-power shielding load experiments were carried out. Experiments showed that the sensor output signal was close to zero in the non-arc state, and the sensor output response was a high-frequency glitch in the arc state. The results were consistent for different loads, and the discrimination between normal and fault states was obvious, which proved that the sensor is suitable for series arc fault detection.

    Description: The demand for extensive data rates in dense-traffic wireless networks has expanded and needs proper controlling schemes. The fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) will accommodate these massive communications, such as massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC), which is considered to be one of its top services. To achieve optimal throughput, which is considered a mandatory quality of service (QoS) metric, the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) transmission attempt rate needs optimization. As the gradient descent algorithms consume a long time to converge, an approximation technique that distributes a dense global network into local neighborhoods that are less complex than the global ones is presented in this paper. Newton’s method of optimization was used to achieve fast convergence rates, thus, obtaining optimal throughput. The convergence rate depended only on the size of the local networks instead of global dense ones. Additionally, polynomial interpolation was used to estimate the average throughput of the network as a function of the number of nodes and target service rates. Three-dimensional planes of the average throughput were presented to give a profound description to network’s performance. The fast convergence time of the proposed model and its lower complexity are more practical than the previous gradient descent algorithm.

    Description: The impact of raindrops on a dry surface leads to a splashing phenomenon that dissipates a lot of energy. To improve energy collection, a novel piezoelectric raindrop energy harvester equipped with a spoonful of water was developed. The advantages and the drawbacks of this solution were analyzed with the aid of numerical simulations. A series of experimental tests were carried out in a laboratory with simulated raindrops. Experimental results showed that the negative effect of the added water mass was exceeded by the positive effects related to the impact of the raindrop on a liquid surface. Tests carried out connecting the harvester to a resistive load showed that the prototype was able to collect more energy than a simple cantilever harvester.

    Description: Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) are capable of collecting multimedia events, such as traffic accidents and wildlife tracking, as well as scalar data. As a result, WMSNs are receiving a great deal of attention both from industry and academic communities. However, multimedia applications tend to generate high volume network traffic, which results in very high energy consumption. As energy is a prime resource in WMSN, an efficient routing algorithm that effectively deals with the dynamic topology of WMSN but also prolongs the lifetime of WMSN is required. To this end, we propose a routing algorithm that combines dynamic cluster formation, cluster head selection, and multipath routing formation for data communication to reduce energy consumption as well as routing overheads. The proposed algorithm uses a genetic algorithm (GA)-based meta-heuristic optimization to dynamically select the best path based on the cost function with the minimum distance and the least energy dissipation. We carried out an extensive performance analysis of the proposed algorithm and compared it with three other routing protocols. The results of the performance analysis showed that the proposed algorithm outperformed the three other routing protocols.

    Description: Immersive virtual reality has recently developed into a readily available system that allows for full-body tracking. Can this affordable system be used for component tracking to advance or replace expensive kinematic systems for motion analysis in the clinic? The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of position and orientation measures from Vive wireless body trackers when compared to Vicon optoelectronic tracked markers attached to (1) a robot simulating trunk flexion and rotation by repeatedly moving to know locations, and (2) healthy adults playing virtual reality games necessitating significant trunk displacements. The comparison of both systems showed component tracking with Vive trackers is accurate within 0.68 ± 0.32 cm translationally and 1.64 ± 0.18° rotationally when compared with a three-dimensional motion capture system. No significant differences between Vive trackers and Vicon systems were found suggesting the Vive wireless sensors can be used to accurately track joint motion for clinical and research data.

    Description: Inter-floor noise is a severe social problem which causes illegal arson, violence, and even murder. In this paper, an inter-floor noise sensing system is proposed to detect and record information related to inter-floor noise in an apartment building. The proposed system measured the noise level and estimated the direction of the noise source along with the type of noise. The noise level measurement is based on the sound pressure level (SPL) measurement, which is a logarithmic measure of the effective pressure of a sound relative to a reference sound pressure. Noise source localization was performed using the estimated time difference of arrival (TDOA) from the microphone array. For the classification of noise types, the Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and zero-crossing rate (ZCR) were extracted from a noise signal, and the k-nearest neighbor algorithm was used to classify the type of noise. In addition, we developed a noise monitoring hardware to evaluate our methods in the actual environment. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed system had a reliable accuracy for each functional unit. The results showed that the error of the noise level was approximately ±1.5 dB(A), the error of the direction estimation was approximately ±10°, and the accuracy of the classification for the noise type was more than 75%. These output data from the proposed system are expected to be used as important reference data for any dispute cases due to inter-floor noise.

    Description: In order to cut down influence on the uncertainty disturbances of a linear motion single axis robot machine, such as the external load force, the cogging force, the column friction force, the Stribeck force, and the parameters variations, the micrometer backstepping control system, using an amended recurrent Gottlieb polynomials neural network and altered ant colony optimization (AACO) with the compensated controller, is put forward for a linear motion single axis robot machine drive system mounted on the linear-optical ruler with 1 um resolution. To achieve high-precision control performance, an adaptive law of the amended recurrent Gottlieb polynomials neural network based on the Lyapunov function is proposed to estimate the lumped uncertainty. Besides this, a novel error-estimated law of the compensated controller is also proposed to compensate for the estimated error between the lumped uncertainty and the amended recurrent Gottlieb polynomials neural network with the adaptive law. Meanwhile, the AACO is used to regulate two variable learning rates in the weights of the amended recurrent Gottlieb polynomials neural network to speed up the convergent speed. The main contributions of this paper are: (1) The digital signal processor (DSP)-based current-regulation pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme being successfully applied to control the linear motion single axis robot machine drive system; (2) the micrometer backstepping control system using an amended recurrent Gottlieb polynomials neural network with the compensated controller being successfully derived according to the Lyapunov function to diminish the lumped uncertainty effect; (3) achieving high-precision control performance, where an adaptive law of the amended recurrent Gottlieb polynomials neural network based on the Lyapunov function is successfully applied to estimate the lumped uncertainty; (4) a novel error-estimated law of the compensated controller being successfully used to compensate for the estimated error; and (5) the AACO being successfully used to regulate two variable learning rates in the weights of the amended recurrent Gottlieb polynomials neural network to speed up the convergent speed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is also verified by the experimental results.

    Description: The environment in space provides favorable conditions for space missions. However, low frequency vibration poses a great challenge to high sensitivity equipment, resulting in performance degradation of sensitive systems. Due to the ever-increasing requirements to protect sensitive payloads, there is a pressing need for micro-vibration suppression. This paper deals with the modeling and control of a maglev vibration isolation system. A high-precision nonlinear dynamic model with six degrees of freedom was derived, which contains the mathematical model of Lorentz actuators and umbilical cables. Regarding the system performance, a double closed-loop control strategy was proposed, and a sliding mode control algorithm was adopted to improve the vibration isolation performance. A simulation program of the system was developed in a MATLAB environment. A vibration isolation performance in the frequency range of 0.01–100 Hz and a tracking performance below 0.01 Hz were obtained. In order to verify the nonlinear dynamic model and the isolation performance, a principle prototype of the maglev isolation system equipped with accelerometers and position sensors was developed for the experiments. By comparing the simulation results and the experiment results, the nonlinear dynamic model of the maglev vibration isolation system was verified and the control strategy of the system was proved to be highly effective.

    Description: Drift correction is an important concern in Electronic noses (E-nose) for maintaining stable performance during continuous work. A large number of reports have been presented for dealing with E-nose drift through machine-learning approaches in the laboratory. In this study, we aim to counter the drift effect in more challenging situations in which the category information (labels) of the drifted samples is difficult or expensive to obtain. Thus, only a few of the drifted samples can be used for label querying. To solve this problem, we propose an innovative methodology based on Active Learning (AL) that selectively provides sample labels for drift correction. Moreover, we utilize a dynamic clustering process to balance the sample category for label querying. In the experimental section, we set up two E-nose drift scenarios—a long-term and a short-term scenario—to evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology. The results indicate that the proposed methodology is superior to the other state-of-art methods presented. Furthermore, the increasing tendencies of parameter sensitivity and accuracy are analyzed. In addition, the Label Efficiency Index (LEI) is adopted to measure the efficiency and labelling cost of the AL methods. The LEI values indicate that our proposed methodology exhibited better performance than the other presented AL methods in the online drift correction of E-noses.

    Description: In this paper, an energy-efficient localization algorithm is proposed for precise localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and the process is accomplished in three steps. Firstly, the beacon nodes discover their one-hop neighbor nodes with additional tone requests and reply packets over the media access control (MAC) layer to avoid collision of packets. Secondly, the discovered one-hop unknown nodes are divided into two sets, i.e. unknown nodes with direct communication, and with indirect communication for energy efficiency. In direct communication, source beacon nodes forward the information directly to the unknown nodes, but a common beacon node is selected for communication which reduces overall energy consumption during transmission in indirect communication. Finally, a correction factor is also introduced, and localized unknown nodes are upgraded into helper nodes for reducing the localization error. To analyze the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, various simulations are conducted and compared with the existing algorithms.

    Description: We present a new seasonal forecasting method based on F1-transform (fuzzy transform of order 1) applied on weather datasets. The objective of this research is to improve the performances of the fuzzy transform-based prediction method applied to seasonal time series. The time series’ trend is obtained via polynomial fitting: then, the dataset is partitioned in S seasonal subsets and the direct F1-transform components for each seasonal subset are calculated as well. The inverse F1-transforms are used to predict the value of the weather parameter in the future. We test our method on heat index datasets obtained from daily weather data measured from weather stations of the Campania Region (Italy) during the months of July and August from 2003 to 2017. We compare the results obtained with the statistics Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Automatic Design of Artificial Neural Networks (ADANN), and the seasonal F-transform methods, showing that the best results are just given by our approach.

    Description: With the development of cloud computing and communication technology, users can access the internet of things (IoT) services provided in various environments, including smart home, smart factory, and smart healthcare. However, a user is insecure various types of attacks, because sensitive information is often transmitted via an open channel. Therefore, secure authentication schemes are essential to provide IoT services for legal users. In 2019, Pelaez et al. presented a lightweight IoT-based authentication scheme in cloud computing environment. However, we prove that Pelaez et al.’s scheme cannot prevent various types of attacks such as impersonation, session key disclosure, and replay attacks and cannot provide mutual authentication and anonymity. In this paper, we present a secure and lightweight three-factor authentication scheme for IoT in cloud computing environment to resolve these security problems. The proposed scheme can withstand various attacks and provide secure mutual authentication and anonymity by utilizing secret parameters and biometric. We also show that our scheme achieves secure mutual authentication using Burrows–Abadi–Needham logic analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our scheme resists replay and man-in-the-middle attacks usingthe automated validation of internet security protocols and applications (AVISPA) simulation tool. Finally, we compare the performance and the security features of the proposed scheme with some existing schemes. Consequently, we provide better safety and efficiency than related schemes and the proposed scheme is suitable for practical IoT-based cloud computing environment.

    Description: In this paper, we present a novel method for obstacle avoidance designed for a nonholonomic mobile robot. The method relies on light detection and ranging (LiDAR) readings, which are mapped into a polar coordinate system. Obstacles are taken into consideration when they are within a predefined radius from the robot. A central part of the approach is a new Heading Weight Function (HWF), in which the beams within the aperture angle of the LiDAR are virtually weighted in order to generate the best trajectory candidate for the robot. The HWF is designed to find a solution also in the case of a local-minima situation. The function is coupled with the robot’s controller in order to provide both linear and angular velocities. We tested the method both by simulations in a digital environment with a range of different static obstacles, and in a real, experimental environment including static and dynamic obstacles. The results showed that when utilizing the novel HWF, the robot was able to navigate safely toward the target while avoiding all obstacles included in the tests. Our findings thus show that it is possible for a robot to navigate safely in a populated environment using this method, and that sufficient efficiency in navigation may be obtained without basing the method on a global planner. This is particularly promising for navigation challenges occurring in unknown environments where models of the world cannot be obtained.

    Description: In this study, the Level-2 products of the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) data on Sentinel-3A are derived using the Case-2 Regional CoastColour (C2RCC) processor for the SentiNel Application Platform (SNAP) whilst adjusting the specific scatter of Total Suspended Matter (TSM) for the Baltic Sea in order to improve TSM retrieval. The remote sensing product “kd_z90max” (i.e., the depth of the water column from which 90% of the water-leaving irradiance are derived) from C2RCC-SNAP showed a good correlation with in situ Secchi depth (SD). Additionally, a regional in-water algorithm was applied to derive SD from the attenuation coefficient Kd(489) using a local algorithm. Furthermore, a regional in-water relationship between particle scatter and bench turbidity was applied to generate turbidity from the remote sensing product “iop_bpart” (i.e., the scattering coefficient of marine particles at 443 nm). The spectral shape of the remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) data extracted from match-up stations was evaluated against reflectance data measured in situ by a tethered Attenuation Coefficient Sensor (TACCS) radiometer. The L2 products were evaluated against in situ data from several dedicated validation campaigns (2016–2018) in the NW Baltic proper. All derived L2 in-water products were statistically compared to in situ data and the results were also compared to results for MERIS validation from the literature and the current S3 Level-2 Water (L2W) standard processor from EUMETSAT. The Chl-a product showed a substantial improvement (MNB 21%, RMSE 88%, APD 96%, n = 27) compared to concentrations derived from the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), with a strong underestimation of higher values. TSM performed within an error comparable to MERIS data with a mean normalized bias (MNB) 25%, root-mean square error (RMSE) 73%, average absolute percentage difference (APD) 63% n = 23). Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) absorption retrieval has also improved substantially when using the product “iop_adg” (i.e., the sum of organic detritus and Gelbstoff absorption at 443 nm) as a proxy (MNB 8%, RMSE 56%, APD 54%, n = 18). The local SD (MNB 6%, RMSE 62%, APD 60%, n = 35) and turbidity (MNB 3%, RMSE 35%, APD 34%, n = 29) algorithms showed very good agreement with in situ data. We recommend the use of the SNAP C2RCC with regionally adjusted TSM-specific scatter for water product retrieval as well as the regional turbidity algorithm for Baltic Sea monitoring. Besides documenting the evaluation of the C2RCC processor, this paper may also act as a handbook on the validation of Ocean Colour data.

    Description: In this paper, a multi-mode waveguide-based optical resonator is proposed for an integrated optical refractive index sensor. Conventional optical resonators have been studied for single-mode waveguide-based resonators to enhance the performance, but mass production is limited owing to the high fabrication costs of nano-scale structures. To overcome this problem, we designed an S-bend resonator based on a micro-scale multi-mode waveguide. In general, multi-mode waveguides cannot be utilized as optical resonators, because of a performance degradation resulting from modal dispersion and an output transmission with multi-peaks. Therefore, we exploited the mode discrimination phenomenon using the bending loss, and the resulting S-bend resonator yielded an output transmission without multi-peaks. This phenomenon is utilized to remove higher-order modes efficiently using the difference in the effective refractive index between the higher-order and fundamental modes. As a result, the resonator achieved a Q-factor and sensitivity of 2.3 × 103 and 52 nm/RIU, respectively, using the variational finite-difference time-domain method. These results show that the multi-mode waveguide-based S-bend resonator with a wide line width can be utilized as a refractive index sensor.

    Description: Development of the Internet of Things (IoT) opens many new challenges. As IoT devices are getting smaller and smaller, the problems of so-called “constrained devices” arise. The traditional Internet protocols are not very well suited for constrained devices comprising localized network nodes with tens of devices primarily communicating with each other (e.g., various sensors in Body Area Network communicating with each other). These devices have very limited memory, processing, and power resources, so traditional security protocols and architectures also do not fit well. To address these challenges the Fog computing paradigm is used in which all constrained devices, or Edge nodes, primarily communicate only with less-constrained Fog node device, which collects all data, processes it and communicates with the outside world. We present a new lightweight secure self-authenticable transfer protocol (SSATP) for communications between Edge nodes and Fog nodes. The primary target of the proposed protocol is to use it as a secure transport for CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol) in place of UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security), which are traditional choices in this scenario. SSATP uses modified header fields of standard UDP packets to transfer additional protocol handling and data flow management information as well as user data authentication information. The optional redundant data may be used to provide increased resistance to data losses when protocol is used in unreliable networks. The results of experiments presented in this paper show that SSATP is a better choice than UDP with DTLS in the cases, where the CoAP block transfer mode is used and/or in lossy networks.

    Description: To solve the illumination sensitivity problems of mobile ground equipment, an enhanced visual SLAM algorithm based on the sparse direct method was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the vignette and response functions of the input sequences were optimized based on the photometric formation of the camera. Secondly, the Shi–Tomasi corners of the input sequence were tracked, and optimization equations were established using the pixel tracking of sparse direct visual odometry (VO). Thirdly, the Levenberg–Marquardt (L–M) method was applied to solve the joint optimization equation, and the photometric calibration parameters in the VO were updated to realize the real-time dynamic compensation of the exposure of the input sequences, which reduced the effects of the light variations on SLAM’s (simultaneous localization and mapping) accuracy and robustness. Finally, a Shi–Tomasi corner filtered strategy was designed to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm, and the loop closure detection was realized based on the oriented FAST and rotated BRIEF (ORB) features. The proposed algorithm was tested using TUM, KITTI, EuRoC, and an actual environment, and the experimental results show that the positioning and mapping performance of the proposed algorithm is promising.

    Description: Due to their ecological relevance, low cost, and easy maintenance, cyanobacteria have been used for bioreporter development. In this study, a battery of cyanobacterial bioreporters has been used to assess the ecotoxicity of four highly used metallic nanoparticles (NPs). The toxicity of these NPs was tested using the bioreporter Nostoc CPB4337 (Anabaena CPB4337). As oxidative stress is a primary toxic mechanism of metallic NPs, cyanobacterial reactive oxygen species (ROS)-detecting bioreporters were used. Metallic NPs release metal ions, which contribute to their toxic effect and the formation of ROS, so a metal-detecting bioreporter was also used to detect the bioavailable metals. The results confirm that ROS production by NPs was due to the NPs per se and not by released free-ions, which in fact were almost undetectable. Although the metal-detecting bioreporter could not detect the dissolved metal ions, it was able to detect the metallic NPs themselves, indicating that this bioreporter may be useful to detect them in the environment. ROS production varied depending on the growth medium or environmental matrices conditions and on the NP type. This work demonstrated the different levels of ROS production by metallic NPs and the importance of nanotoxicology studies in real matrices.

Using structural vibration data collected on a limited number of sensors during a 3-month period, we illustrate the potential of the stretching method for monitoring variations in the natural frequencies of the structure. The stretching method compares two signals, the current that refers to the actual state of the structure, with the reference one that characterizes the structure at a reference healthy condition. For the structure under study, an 8-day time interval is used for the reference quantity while the current quantity is computed using a time window of 24 h. Our results indicate that frequency shifts of 1% can be detected with high accuracy allowing for early damage assessment. We also provide a simple numerical model that is calibrated to match the natural frequencies estimated using the stretching method. The model is used to produce possible damage scenarios that correspond to 1% shift in the first natural frequencies. Although simple in nature, this model seems to deliver a realistic response of the structure. This is shown by comparing the response at the top of the structure to the actual measurement during a small earthquake. This is a preliminary study indicating the potential of the stretching method for structural health monitoring of historical monuments. The results are very promising. Further analysis is necessary requiring the deployment of the instrumentation (possibly with additional instruments) for a longer period of time.

    Description: We investigated machine learning-based joint banknote recognition and counterfeit detection method. Unlike existing methods, since the proposed method simultaneously recognize banknote type and detect counterfeit detection, it is significantly faster than existing serial banknote recognition and counterfeit detection methods. Furthermore, we propose an explainable artificial intelligence method for visualizing regions that contributed to the recognition and detection. Using the visualization, it is possible to understand the behavior of the trained machine learning system. In experiments using the United State Dollar and the European Union Euro banknotes, the proposed method shows significant improvement in computation time from conventional serial method.

    Description: Random bin-picking is a prominent, useful, and challenging industrial robotics application. However, many industrial and real-world objects are planar and have oriented surface points that are not sufficiently compact and discriminative for those methods using geometry information, especially depth discontinuities. This study solves the above-mentioned problems by proposing a novel and robust solution for random bin-picking for planar objects in a cluttered environment. Different from other research that has mainly focused on 3D information, this study first applies an instance segmentation-based deep learning approach using 2D image data for classifying and localizing the target object while generating a mask for each instance. The presented approach, moreover, serves as a pioneering method to extract 3D point cloud data based on 2D pixel values for building the appropriate coordinate system on the planar object plane. The experimental results showed that the proposed method reached an accuracy rate of 100% for classifying two-sided objects in the unseen dataset, and 3D appropriate pose prediction was highly effective, with average translation and rotation errors less than 0.23 cm and 2.26°, respectively. Finally, the system success rate for picking up objects was over 99% at an average processing time of 0.9 s per step, fast enough for continuous robotic operation without interruption. This showed a promising higher successful pickup rate compared to previous approaches to random bin-picking problems. Successful implementation of the proposed approach for USB packs provides a solid basis for other planar objects in a cluttered environment. With remarkable precision and efficiency, this study shows significant commercialization potential.

    Description: In this paper, a light-weight radio frequency fingerprinting identification (RFFID) scheme that combines with a two-layer model is proposed to realize authentications for a large number of resource-constrained terminals under the mobile edge computing (MEC) scenario without relying on encryption-based methods. In the first layer, signal collection, extraction of RF fingerprint features, dynamic feature database storage, and access authentication decision are carried out by the MEC devices. In the second layer, learning features, generating decision models, and implementing machine learning algorithms for recognition are performed by the remote cloud. By this means, the authentication rate can be improved by taking advantage of the machine-learning training methods and computing resource support of the cloud. Extensive simulations are performed under the IoT application scenario. The results show that the novel method can achieve higher recognition rate than that of traditional RFFID method by using wavelet feature effectively, which demonstrates the efficiency of our proposed method.

    Description: Background: Several studies have examined the differences between the different small-sided game (SSG) formats. However, only one study has analysed how the different variables that define SSGs can modify the goalkeeper’s behavior. The aim of the present study was to analyze how the modification of the pitch size in SSGs affects the physical demands of the goalkeepers. Methods: Three professional male football goalkeepers participated in this study. Three different SSG were analysed (62 m × 44 m for a large pitch; 50 m × 35 m for a medium pitch and 32 m × 23 m for a small pitch). Positional data of each goalkeeper was gathered using an 18.18 Hz global positioning system. The data gathered was used to compute players’ spatial exploration index, standard ellipse area, prediction ellipse area The distance covered, distance covered in different intensities and accelerations/decelerations were used to assess the players’ physical performance. Results and Conclusions: There were differences between small and large SSGs in relation to the distances covered at different intensities and pitch exploration. Intensities were lower when the pitch size was larger. Besides that, the pitch exploration variables increased along with the increment of the pitch size.

    Description: The cylindrical resonator gyroscope (CRG) is a kind of solid-state gyroscope with a wide application market. The cylindrical resonator is the key component of CRG, whose quality factor and symmetry will directly affect the performance of the gyroscope. Due to the material properties and fabrication limitations, the actual resonator always has some defects. Therefore, frequency trimming, i.e., altering the local mass or stiffness distribution by certain methods, is needed to improve the overall symmetry of the resonator. In this paper, we made further derivation based on the chemical trimming theory proposed by Basarab et al. We built up the relation between the frequency split and the balanced mass to determine the mass to be removed. Chemical trimming experiments were conducted on three cylindrical fused silica resonators. The frequency splits of the three resonators were around 0.05 Hz after chemical trimming. The relation between frequency split and balanced mass established from experimental data was consistent with the theoretical calculation. Therefore, frequency split can be reduced to lower than 0.05 Hz under rigorous theoretical calculation and optimized chemical trimming parameters.

    Description: Detection and classification of tree species from remote sensing data were performed using mainly multispectral and hyperspectral images and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data. Despite the comparatively lower cost and higher spatial resolution, few studies focused on images captured by Red-Green-Blue (RGB) sensors. Besides, the recent years have witnessed an impressive progress of deep learning methods for object detection. Motivated by this scenario, we proposed and evaluated the usage of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based methods combined with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) high spatial resolution RGB imagery for the detection of law protected tree species. Three state-of-the-art object detection methods were evaluated: Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN), YOLOv3 and RetinaNet. A dataset was built to assess the selected methods, comprising 392 RBG images captured from August 2018 to February 2019, over a forested urban area in midwest Brazil. The target object is an important tree species threatened by extinction known as Dipteryx alata Vogel (Fabaceae). The experimental analysis delivered average precision around 92% with an associated processing times below 30 miliseconds.

    Description: Interaction forces are traditionally predicted by a contact type haptic sensor. In this paper, we propose a novel and practical method for inferring the interaction forces between two objects based only on video data—one of the non-contact type camera sensors—without the use of common haptic sensors. In detail, we could predict the interaction force by observing the texture changes of the target object by an external force. For this purpose, our hypothesis is that a three-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural network (CNN) can be made to predict the physical interaction forces from video images. In this paper, we proposed a bottleneck-based 3D depthwise separable CNN architecture where the video is disentangled into spatial and temporal information. By applying the basic depthwise convolution concept to each video frame, spatial information can be efficiently learned; for temporal information, the 3D pointwise convolution can be used to learn the linear combination among sequential frames. To validate and train the proposed model, we collected large quantities of datasets, which are video clips of the physical interactions between two objects under different conditions (illumination and angle variations) and the corresponding interaction forces measured by the haptic sensor (as the ground truth). Our experimental results confirmed our hypothesis; when compared with previous models, the proposed model was more accurate and efficient, and although its model size was 10 times smaller, the 3D convolutional neural network architecture exhibited better accuracy. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed model remains robust under different conditions and can successfully estimate the interaction force between objects.

    Description: This paper presents a framework for the evaluation of system complexity and utility and the identification of bottlenecks in the deployment of field-based, high-throughput phenotyping (FB-HTP) systems. Although the capabilities of technology used for high-throughput phenotyping has improved and costs decreased, there have been few, if any, successful attempts at developing turnkey field-based phenotyping systems. To identify areas for future improvement in developing turnkey FB-HTP solutions, a framework for evaluating their complexity and utility was developed and applied to total of 10 case studies to highlight potential barriers in their development and adoption. The framework performs system factorization and rates the complexity and utility of subsystem factors, as well as each FB-HTP system as a whole, and provides data related to the trends and relationships within the complexity and utility factors. This work suggests that additional research and development are needed focused around the following areas: (i) data handling and management, specifically data transfer from the field to the data processing pipeline, (ii) improved human-machine interaction to facilitate usability across multiple users, and (iii) design standardization of the factors common across all FB-HTP systems to limit the competing drivers of system complexity and utility. This framework can be used to evaluate both previously developed and future proposed systems to approximate the overall system complexity and identify areas for improvement prior to implementation.

    Description: A combined sensor to simultaneously measure strain, vibration, and temperature has been developed. The sensor is composed of two Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and a vibration gainer. One FBG is used to measure strain, while the other measures vibration and temperature. The gainer has a mass block which is used to increase its sensitivity to vibration. The main beam of the vibration gainer was designed as a trapezoid in order to reduce the strain gradient while sensing vibration. In addition, an interrogation method was used to eliminate interactions between measured parameters. Experiments were carried out to analyze the performance of the proposed sensor. For individual strain measurement in the range of 0–152 με, the sensitivity and nonlinearity error were 1.878 pm/με and 2.43% Full Scale (F.S.), respectively. For individual temperature measurement in the range of 50–210 °C, the sensitivity and nonlinearity error were 29.324 pm/°C and 1.88% F.S., respectively. The proposed sensor also demonstrated a sensitivity of 0.769 pm/m·s−2 and nonlinearity error of 1.83% F.S. for vibration measurement in the range of 10–55 m/s2. Finally, simultaneously measuring strain, temperature, and vibration resulted in nonlinearity errors of 4.23% F.S., 1.89% F.S., and 2.23% F.S., respectively.

    Description: One of the most common means for diagnosis is through medical laboratory testing, which primarily uses venous blood as a sample. This requires an invasive method by cannulation that needs proper vein selection. The use of a vein finder would help the phlebotomist to easily locate the vein, preventing possible pre-analytical error in the specimen collection and even more discomfort and pain to the patient. This paper is a review of the scientific publications on the different developed low-cost vein finder prototypes utilizing camera assisted near infrared (NIR) light technology. Methods: Electronic databases were searched online, these included PubMed (PMC), MEDLINE, Science Direct, ResearchGate, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Xplore digital library. Specifically, publications with the terms vein finder prototype, NIR technology, vein detection, and infrared imaging were screened. In addition, reference lists were used to further review related publications. Results: Cannulation challenges medical practitioners because of the different factors that can be reduced by the utilization of a vein finder. A limited number of publications regarding the assessment of personnel performing cannulation were observed. Moreover, variations in methodology, number of patients, type of patients according to their demographics and materials used in the assessment of the developed prototypes were noted. Some studies were limited with regard to the actual human testing of the prototype. Conclusions: The development of a low-cost effective near infrared (NIR) vein finder remains in the phase of improvement. Since, it is being challenged by different human factors, increasing the number of parameters and participants/human for actual testing of the prototypes must also be taken into consideration for possible commercialization. Finally, it was noted that publications regarding the assessment of the performance of phlebotomists using vein finders were limited.

    Description: We propose a method for generating the synthetic images of human embryo cells that could later be used for classification, analysis, and training, thus resulting in the creation of new synthetic image datasets for research areas lacking real-world data. Our focus was not only to generate the generic image of a cell such, but to make sure that it has all necessary attributes of a real cell image to provide a fully realistic synthetic version. We use human embryo images obtained during cell development processes for training a deep neural network (DNN). The proposed algorithm used generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate one-, two-, and four-cell stage images. We achieved a misclassification rate of 12.3% for the generated images, while the expert evaluation showed the true recognition rate (TRR) of 80.00% (for four-cell images), 86.8% (for two-cell images), and 96.2% (for one-cell images). Texture-based comparison using the Haralick features showed that there is no statistically (using the Student’s t-test) significant (p 〈 0.01) differences between the real and synthetic embryo images except for the sum of variance (for one-cell and four-cell images), and variance and sum of average (for two-cell images) features. The obtained synthetic images can be later adapted to facilitate the development, training, and evaluation of new algorithms for embryo image processing tasks.

    Description: As an important inertial sensor, the gyroscope is mainly used to measure angular velocity in inertial space. However, due to the influence of semiconductor thermal noise and electromagnetic interference, the output of the gyroscope has a certain random noise and drift, which affects the accuracy of the detected angular velocity signal, thus interfering with the accuracy of the stability of the whole system. In order to reduce the noise and compensate for the drift of the MEMS (Micro Electromechanical System) gyroscope during usage, this paper proposes a Kalman filtering method based on information fusion, which uses the MEMS gyroscope and line accelerometer signals to implement the filtering function under the Kalman algorithm. The experimental results show that compared with the commonly used filtering methods, this method allows significant reduction of the noise of the gyroscope signal and accurate estimation of the drift of the gyroscope signal, and thus improves the control performance of the system and the stability accuracy.

    Description: By the standard of today’s image-guided surgery (IGS) technology, in order to check and verify the progress of the surgery, the surgeons still require divert their attention from the patients occasionally to check against the display. In this paper, a mixed-reality system for medical use is proposed that combines an Intel RealSense sensor with Microsoft’s Hololens head-mounted display system, for superimposing medical data onto the physical surface of a patient, so the surgeons do not need to divert their attention from their patients. The main idea of our proposed system is to display the 3D medical images of the patients on the actual patients themselves by placing the medical images and the patients in the same coordinate space. However, the virtual medical data may contain noises and outliers, so the transformation mapping function must be able to handle these problems. The transform function in our system is performed by the use of our proposed Denoised-Resampled-Weighted-and-Perturbed-Iterative Closest Points (DRWP-ICP) algorithm, which performs denoising and removal of outliers before aligning the pre-operative medical image data points to the patient’s physical surface position before displaying the result using the Microsoft HoloLens display system. The experimental results shows that our proposed mixed-reality system using DRWP-ICP is capable of performing accurate and robust mapping despite the presence of noise and outliers.

    Description: Recently, radio frequency (RF) technology was introduced as a tool to determine the oxygen storage level of a three-way catalyst (TWC) for gasoline vehicles. Previous studies on the investigation of commercial catalysts mostly use only the resonant frequency to describe the correlation of oxygen storage level and RF signal. For the first time this study presents a comparison under defined laboratory conditions considering both, resonance frequency and also the quality factor as measurands. Furthermore, various advantages over the sole use of the resonant frequency in the technical application are discussed. Experiments with Ø4.66’’ catalysts and Ø1.66’’ catalyst cores with alternating (rich/lean) gas compositions showed that the relative change in signal amplitude due to a change in oxygen storage is about 100 times higher for the inverse quality factor compared to the resonant frequency. In addition, the quality factor reacts more sensitively to the onset of the oxygen-storage ability, and delivers precise information about the necessary temperature, which is not possible when evaluating the resonant frequency due to the low signal amplitude. As investigations on aged catalysts confirm, the quality factor also provides a new approach to determine operando the ageing state of a TWC.

    Description: We took advantage of the large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in Fe–Pt ferromagnetic alloys and fabricated magnetic sensors for low-frequency applications. We characterized the low-frequency electronic noise and the field detectability of the FexPt100-x system with various thin film thicknesses and Fe concentrations. The noise source consisted of 1/f and Johnson noise. A large current density increased the 1/f noise but not the Johnson noise. We found that the field detectability of the optimized Fe–Pt thin film offers much better low-frequency performance than a highly sensitive commercial semiconductor Hall sensor. Anomalous Hall effect sensors are, therefore, good candidates for magnetic sensing applications.

    Description: Coprime array with M + N sensors can achieve an increased degrees-of-freedom (DOF) of O ( M N ) for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. Utilizing the compressive sensing (CS)-based DOA estimation methods, the increased DOF offered by the coprime array can be fully exploited. However, when some sensors in the array are miscalibrated, these DOA estimation methods suffer from degraded performance or even failed operation. Besides, the key to the success of CS-based DOA estimation is that every target falls on the predefined grid. Thus, a coarse grid may cause the mismatch problem, whereas a fine grid requires great computational cost. In this paper, a robust CS-based DOA estimation algorithm is proposed for coprime array with miscalibrated sensors. In the proposed algorithm, signals received by the miscalibrated sensors are viewed as outliers, and correntropy is introduced as the similarity measurement to distinguish these outliers. Incorporated with maximum correntropy criterion (MCC), an iterative sparse reconstruction-based algorithm is then developed to give the DOA estimation while mitigating the influence of the outliers. A multiresolution grid refinement strategy is also incorporated to reconcile the contradiction between computational cost and the mismatch problem. The numerical simulation results verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Nanotechnological advances have augmented the SPR sensor research tremendously by employing nanomaterials in the design of SPR-based sensors, owing to their manifold properties. Carbon-based nanomaterials, like graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide (GO)), (reduced graphene oxide (rGO)), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and their nanocomposites, have revolutionized the field of sensing due to their extraordinary properties, such as large surface area, easy synthesis, tunable optical properties, and strong compatible adsorption of biomolecules. In SPR based sensors carbon-based nanomaterials have been used to act as a plasmonic layer, as the sensitivity enhancement material, and to provide the large surface area and compatibility for immobilizing various biomolecules, such as enzymes, DNA, antibodies, and antigens, in the design of the sensing layer. In this review, we report the role of carbon-based nanomaterials in SPR-based sensors, their current developments, and challenges.

    Description: Wearable devices offer a convenient means to monitor biosignals in real time at relatively low cost, and provide continuous monitoring without causing any discomfort. Among signals that contain critical information about human body status, electromyography (EMG) signal is particular useful in monitoring muscle functionality and activity during sport, fitness, or daily life. In particular surface electromyography (sEMG) has proven to be a suitable technique in several health monitoring applications, thanks to its non-invasiveness and ease to use. However, recording EMG signals from multiple channels yields a large amount of data that increases the power consumption of wireless transmission thus reducing the sensor lifetime. Compressed sensing (CS) is a promising data acquisition solution that takes advantage of the signal sparseness in a particular basis to significantly reduce the number of samples needed to reconstruct the signal. As a large variety of algorithms have been developed in recent years with this technique, it is of paramount importance to assess their performance in order to meet the stringent energy constraints imposed in the design of low-power wireless body area networks (WBANs) for sEMG monitoring. The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive comparative study of computational methods for CS reconstruction of EMG signals, giving some useful guidelines in the design of efficient low-power WBANs. For this purpose, four of the most common reconstruction algorithms used in practical applications have been deeply analyzed and compared both in terms of accuracy and speed, and the sparseness of the signal has been estimated in three different bases. A wide range of experiments are performed on real-world EMG biosignals coming from two different datasets, giving rise to two different independent case studies.

    Description: This paper presents a miniature spectrometer fabricated based on a G-Fresnel optical device (i.e., diffraction grating and Fresnel lens) and operated by an image-processing algorithm, with an emphasis on the color space conversion in the range of visible light. The miniature spectrometer will be cost-effective and consists of a compact G-Fresnel optical device, which diffuses mixed visible light into the spectral image and a μ-processor platform embedded with an image-processing algorithm. The RGB color space commonly used in the image signal from a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)-type image sensor is converted into the HSV color space, which is one of the most common methods to express color as a numeric value using hue (H), saturation (S), and value (V) via the color space conversion algorithm. Because the HSV color space has the advantages of expressing not only the three primary colors of light as the H but also its intensity as the V, it was possible to obtain both the wavelength and intensity information of the visible light from its spectral image. This miniature spectrometer yielded nonlinear sensitivity of hue in terms of wavelength. In this study, we introduce the potential of the G-Fresnel optical device, which is a miniature spectrometer, and demonstrated by measurement of the mechanoluminescence (ML) spectrum as a proof of concept.

    Description: It is very important to analyze and monitor agricultural drought to obtain high temporal-spatial resolution soil moisture products. To overcome the deficiencies of passive microwave soil moisture products with low resolution, we construct a spatial fusion downscaling model (SFDM) using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. To eliminate the inconsistencies in soil depth and time among different microwave soil moisture products (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) and its successor (AMSR2) and the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS)), a time series reconstruction of the difference decomposition (TSRDD) method is developed to create long-term multisensor soil moisture datasets. Overall, the downscaled soil moisture (SM) products were consistent with the in situ measurements (R 〉 0.78) and exhibited a low root mean square error (RMSE 〈 0.10 m3/m3), which indicates good accuracy throughout the time series. The downscaled SM data at a 1-km spatial resolution were used to analyze the spatiotemporal patterns and monitor abnormal conditions in the soil water content across North East China (NEC) between 2002 and 2018. The results showed that droughts frequently appeared in western North East China and southwest of the Greater Khingan Range, while drought centers appeared in central North East China. Waterlogging commonly appeared in low-terrain areas, such as the Songnen Plain. Seasonal precipitation and temperature exhibited distinct interdecadal characteristics that were closely related to the occurrence of extreme climatic events. Abnormal SM levels were often accompanied by large meteorological and natural disasters (e.g., the droughts of 2008, 2015, and 2018 and the flooding events of 2003 and 2013). The spatial distribution of drought in this region during the growing season shows that the drought-affected area is larger in the west than in the east and that the semiarid boundary extends eastward and southward.

    Description: The wireless Internet of Things (IoT) family grows without interruption. Every day more applications and wireless devices are available to interconnect and help solve multiple problems in areas such as health, critical infrastructure, industry, etc. Many of the tasks to be performed by the IoT network require time synchronization for their correct operation, either to use the spectrum more efficiently, to add data from different sensors, or to carry out coordinated communications. Each of these applications has different requirements regarding time synchronization. This means that the decision of which strategy to follow to synchronize an IoT end device becomes a task that requires important prior analysis and usually, if developers are experts in the topic, ends with the implementation of an ad hoc solution. In this article, we present a methodology to choose an adequate time-synchronization strategy for any wireless IoT application. We also present a tool that executes the methodology, guiding the IoT application developer through some input forms. This combination of methodology and tool abstracts developers from the complexities of time-synchronization strategies, allowing them to choose the correct strategy regardless of their level of knowledge in wireless IoT time synchronization. As a result, the methodology offers a set of time-synchronization strategies that are adjusted to the needs of developers and applications.

    Description: Among the current indoor positioning technologies, Bluetooth low energy (BLE) has gained increasing attention. In particular, the traditional distance estimation derived from aggregate RSS and signal-attenuation models is generally unstable because of the complicated interference in indoor environments. To improve the adaptability and robustness of the BLE positioning system, we propose making full use of the three separate channels of BLE instead of their combination, which has generally been used before. In the first step, three signal-attenuation models are separately established for each BLE advertising channel in the offline phase, and a more stable distance in the online phase can be acquired by assembling measurements from all three channels with the distance decision strategy. Subsequently, a weighted trilateration method with uncertainties related to the distances derived in the first step is proposed to determine the user’s optimal position. The test results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm for determining the distance error achieves a value of less than 2.2 m at 90%, while for the positioning error, it achieves a value of less than 2.4 m at 90%. Compared with the traditional methods, the positioning error of our method is reduced by 33% to 38% for different smartphones and scenarios.

    Description: The paper presents the design and fabrication of a low-cost and easy-to-fabricate laser-induced graphene sensor together with its implementation for multi-sensing applications. Laser-irradiation of commercial polymer film was applied for photo-thermal generation of graphene. The graphene patterned in an interdigitated shape was transferred onto Kapton sticky tape to form the electrodes of a capacitive sensor. The functionality of the sensor was validated by employing them in electrochemical and strain-sensing scenarios. Impedance spectroscopy was applied to investigate the response of the sensor. For the electrochemical sensing, different concentrations of sodium sulfate were prepared, and the fabricated sensor was used to detect the concentration differences. For the strain sensing, the sensor was deployed for monitoring of human joint movements and tactile sensing. The promising sensing results validating the applicability of the fabricated sensor for multiple sensing purposes are presented.

    Description: Internet gaming disorder in adolescents and young adults has become an increasing public concern because of its high prevalence rate and potential risk of alteration of brain functions and organizations. Cue exposure therapy is designed for reducing or maintaining craving, a core factor of relapse of addiction, and is extensively employed in addiction treatment. In a previous study, we proposed a machine-learning-based method to detect craving for gaming using multimodal physiological signals including photoplethysmogram, galvanic skin response, and electrooculogram. Our previous study demonstrated that a craving for gaming could be detected with a fairly high accuracy; however, as the feature vectors for the machine-learning-based detection of the craving of a user were selected based on the physiological data of the user that were recorded on the same day, the effectiveness of the reuse of the machine learning model constructed during the previous experiments, without any further calibration sessions, was still questionable. This “high test-retest reliability” characteristic is of importance for the practical use of the craving detection system because the system needs to be repeatedly applied to the treatment processes as a tool to monitor the efficacy of the treatment. We presented short video clips of three addictive games to nine participants, during which various physiological signals were recorded. This experiment was repeated with different video clips on three different days. Initially, we investigated the test-retest reliability of 14 features used in a craving detection system by computing the intraclass correlation coefficient. Then, we classified whether each participant experienced a craving for gaming in the third experiment using various classifiers—the support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors (kNN), centroid displacement-based kNN, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest—trained with the physiological signals recorded during the first or second experiment. Consequently, the craving/non-craving states in the third experiment were classified with an accuracy that was comparable to that achieved using the data of the same day; thus, demonstrating a high test-retest reliability and the practicality of our craving detection method. In addition, the classification performance was further enhanced by using both datasets of the first and second experiments to train the classifiers, suggesting that an individually customized game craving detection system with high accuracy can be implemented by accumulating datasets recorded on different days under different experimental conditions.

    Description: To perform geodetic measurements of displacements of the ground and manmade constructions, stabilised reference points are needed from which control points on the object or its surroundings could be measured. Reference points are most commonly stabilised with reinforced concrete pillars; however, they are not always constructed in an appropriate manner. The influence of temperature variation within a pillar on the position of the fixed screw for forced centring is not negligible and should be considered when performing precise measurements. In this research paper, the displacement of a pillar was calculated as a result of the temperature changes in the pillar, and then an experiment was performed in which the pillar was heated from one side, and the horizontal displacement of the fixed screw for forced centring was measured. Both, calculations and measurements, show that at a temperature difference of 16.2 °C, the fixed screw on a 1.5 m high pillar moves by approximately 1 mm, which is a displacement that should be taken into account in precise measurements.

    Description: Current physiotherapy services may not be effective or suitable for certain patients due to lack of motivation, poor adherence to exercises, insufficient supervision and feedback or, in the worst case, refusal to continue with the rehabilitation plan. This paper introduces a novel approach for rehabilitation of upper limbs through KineActiv, a platform based on Microsoft Kinect v2 and developed in Unity Engine. KineActiv proposes exergames to encourage patients to perform rehabilitation exercises prescribed by a specialist, controls the patient′s performance, and corrects execution errors on the fly. KineActiv comprises a web platform where the physiotherapist can review session results, monitor patient health, and adjust rehabilitation routines. We recruited 10 patients for assessing the system usability as well as the system performance. Results show that KineActiv is a usable, enjoyable and reliable system, that does not cause any negative feelings.

    Description: Sensitive detection of nucleic acids and identification of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is crucial in diagnosis of genetic diseases. Many strategies have been developed for detection and analysis of DNA, including fluorescence, electrical, optical, and mechanical methods. Recent advances in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based sensing have provided a new avenue for sensitive and quantitative detection of various types of biomolecules in simple, rapid, and recyclable platforms. Here, we report single-step FRET-based DNA sensors designed to work via a toehold-mediated strand displacement (TMSD) process, leading to a distinct change in the FRET efficiency upon target binding. Using single-molecule FRET (smFRET), we show that these sensors can be regenerated in situ, and they allow detection of femtomoles DNA without the need for target amplification while still using a dramatically small sample size (fewer than three orders of magnitude compared to the typical sample size of bulk fluorescence). In addition, these single-molecule sensors exhibit a dynamic range of approximately two orders of magnitude. Using one of the sensors, we demonstrate that the single-base mismatch sequence can be discriminated from a fully matched DNA target, showing a high specificity of the method. These sensors with simple and recyclable design, sensitive detection of DNA, and the ability to discriminate single-base mismatch sequences may find applications in quantitative analysis of nucleic acid biomarkers.

    Description: Olfaction is a valuable source of information about the environment that has not been sufficiently exploited in mobile robotics yet. Certainly, odor information can contribute to other sensing modalities, e.g., vision, to accomplish high-level robot activities, such as task planning or execution in human environments. This paper organizes and puts together the developments and experiences on combining olfaction and vision into robotics applications, as the result of our five-years long project IRO: Improvement of the sensory and autonomous capability of Robots through Olfaction. Particularly, it investigates mechanisms to exploit odor information (usually coming in the form of the type of volatile and its concentration) in problems such as object recognition and scene–activity understanding. A distinctive aspect of this research is the special attention paid to the role of semantics within the robot perception and decision-making processes. The obtained results have improved the robot capabilities in terms of efficiency, autonomy, and usefulness, as reported in our publications.

    Description: In this research, we proposed a miniaturized two-element sensor array inspired by Ormia Ochracea for sound direction finding applications. In contrast to the convectional approach of using mechanical coupling structures for enlarging the intensity differences, we exploited an electrical coupling network circuit composed of lumped elements to enhance the phase differences and extract the optimized output power for good signal-to-noise ratio. The separation distance between two sensors could be reduced from 0.5 wavelength to 0.1 wavelength 3.43 mm at the operation frequency of 10 kHz) for determining the angle of arrivals. The main advantages of the proposed device include low power losses, flexible designs, and wide operation bandwidths. A prototype was designed, fabricated, and experiments examined within a sound anechoic chamber. It was demonstrated that the proposed device had a phase enhancement of 110 ° at the incident angle of 90 ° and the normalized power level of −2.16 dB at both output ports. The received power levels of our device were 3 dB higher than those of the transformer-type direction-finding system. In addition, our proposed device could operate in the frequency range from 8 kHz to 12 kHz with a tunable capacitor. The research results are expected to be beneficial for the compact sonar or radar systems.

    Description: Intelligent automation and trusted autonomy are being introduced in aerospace cyber-physical systems to support diverse tasks including data processing, decision-making, information sharing and mission execution. Due to the increasing level of integration/collaboration between humans and automation in these tasks, the operational performance of closed-loop human-machine systems can be enhanced when the machine monitors the operator’s cognitive states and adapts to them in order to maximise the effectiveness of the Human-Machine Interfaces and Interactions (HMI2). Technological developments have led to neurophysiological observations becoming a reliable methodology to evaluate the human operator’s states using a variety of wearable and remote sensors. The adoption of sensor networks can be seen as an evolution of this approach, as there are notable advantages if these sensors collect and exchange data in real-time, while their operation is controlled remotely and synchronised. This paper discusses recent advances in sensor networks for aerospace cyber-physical systems, focusing on Cognitive HMI2 (CHMI2) implementations. The key neurophysiological measurements used in this context and their relationship with the operator’s cognitive states are discussed. Suitable data analysis techniques based on machine learning and statistical inference are also presented, as these techniques allow processing both neurophysiological and operational data to obtain accurate cognitive state estimations. Lastly, to support the development of sensor networks for CHMI2 applications, the paper addresses the performance characterisation of various state-of-the-art sensors and the propagation of measurement uncertainties through a machine learning-based inference engine. Results show that a proper sensor selection and integration can support the implementation of effective human-machine systems for various challenging aerospace applications, including Air Traffic Management (ATM), commercial airliner Single-Pilot Operations (SIPO), one-to-many Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), and space operations management.

    Description: The stockline, which describes the measured depth of the blast furnace (BF) burden surface with time, is significant to the operator executing an optimized charging operation. For the harsh BF environment, noise interferences and aberrant measurements are the main challenges of stockline detection. In this paper, a novel encoder–decoder architecture that consists of a convolution neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is proposed, which suppresses the noise interferences, classifies the distorted signals, and regresses the stockline in a learning way. By leveraging the LSTM, we are able to model the longer historical measurements for robust stockline tracking. Compared to traditional hand-crafted denoising processing, the time and efforts could be greatly saved. Experiments are conducted on an actual eight-radar array system in a blast furnace, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on the real recorded data.

    Description: In recent years, Energy Efficiency (EE) has become a critical design metric for cellular systems. In order to achieve EE, a fine balance between throughput and fairness must also be ensured. To this end, in this paper we have presented various resource block (RB) allocation schemes in relay-assisted Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) networks. Driven by equal power and Bisection-based Power Allocation (BOPA) algorithm, the Maximum Throughput (MT) and an alternating MT and proportional fairness (PF)-based SAMM (abbreviated with Authors’ names) RB allocation scheme is presented for a single relay. In the case of multiple relays, the dependency of RB and power allocation on relay deployment and users’ association is first addressed through a k-mean clustering approach. Secondly, to reduce the computational cost of RB and power allocation, a two-step neural network (NN) process (SAMM NN) is presented that uses SAMM-based unsupervised learning for RB allocation and BOPA-based supervised learning for power allocation. The results for all the schemes are compared in terms of EE and user throughput. For a single relay, SAMM BOPA offers the best EE, whereas SAMM equal power provides the best fairness. In the case of multiple relays, the results indicate SAMM NN achieves better EE compared to SAMM equal power and BOPA, and it also achieves better throughput fairness compared to MT equal power and MT BOPA.

    Description: Fault diagnosis of rotor asymmetries of induction machines (IMs) using the stator current relies on the detection of the characteristic signatures of the fault harmonics in the current spectrum. In some scenarios, such as large induction machines running at a very low slip, or unloaded machines tested offline, this technique may fail. In these scenarios, the fault harmonics are very close to the frequency of the fundamental component, and have a low amplitude, so that they may remain undetected, buried under the fundamental’s leakage, until the damage is severe. To avoid false positives, a proven approach is to search for the fault harmonics in the current envelope, instead of the current itself, because in this case the spectrum is free from the leakage of the fundamental. Besides, the fault harmonics appear at a very low frequency. Nevertheless, building the current spectrum is costly in terms of computing complexity, as in the case of the Hilbert transform, or hardware resources, as in the need for simultaneously sampling three stator currents in the case of the extended current Park’s vector approach (EPVA). In this work, a novel method is proposed to avoid this problem. It is based on sampling a phase current just twice per current cycle, with a fixed delay with respect to its zero crossings. It is shown that the spectrum of this reduced set of current samples contains the same fault harmonics as the spectrum of the full-length current envelope, despite using a minimal amount of computing resources. The proposed approach is cost-effective, because the computational requirements for building the current envelope are reduced to less than 1 % of those required by other conventional methods, in terms of storage and computing time. In this way, it can be implemented with low-cost embedded devices for on-line fault diagnosis. The proposed approach is introduced theoretically and validated experimentally, using a commercial induction motor with a broken bar under different load and supply conditions. Besides, the proposed approach has been implemented on a low-cost embedded device, which can be accessed on-line for remote fault diagnosis.

    Description: Water resources on Earth become one of the main concerns for society. Therefore, remote sensing methods are still under development in order to improve the picture of the global water cycle. In this context, the microwave bands are the most suitable to study land–water resources. The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS), satellite mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), is dedicated for studies of the water in soil over land and salinity of oceans. The part of calibration/validation activities in order to improve soil moisture retrieval algorithms over land is done with ground-based passive radiometers. The European Space Agency L-band Microwave Radiometer (ELBARA III) located near the Bubnów wetland in Poland is capable of mapping microwave emissivity at the local scale, due to the azimuthal and vertical movement of the horn antenna. In this paper, we present results of the spatio-temporal mapping of the brightness temperatures on the heterogeneous area of the Bubnów test-site consisting of an area with variable organic matter (OM) content and different type of vegetation. The soil moisture (SM) was retrieved with the L-band microwave emission of the biosphere (L-MEB) model with simplified roughness parametrization (SRP) coupling roughness and optical depth parameters. Estimated soil moisture values were compared with in-situ data from the automatic agrometeorological station. The results show that on the areas with a relatively low OM content (4–6%—cultivated field) there was good agreement between measured and estimated SM values. Further increase in OM content, starting from approximately 6% (meadow wetland), caused an increase in bias, root mean square error (RMSE), and unbiased RMSE (ubRMSE) values and a general drop in correlation coefficient (R). Despite a span of obtained R values, we found that time-averaged estimated SM using the L-MEB SRP approach strongly correlated with OM contents.

    Description: To minimize conventional total-phosphorus (TP) analysis systems, TP pretreatment microfluidic chip is proposed and characterized in this paper. Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important elements in ecosystem but it causes the eutrophication due to its overdose. TP analysis systems are increasingly receiving attention as a means to prevent eutrophication. Even though conventional TP analysis systems have high accuracy and sensitivity, they are not frequently utilized outside the laboratory because of their bulky size, complicated pretreatment processes, long response times, and high cost. Thus, there is a growing need to develop portable TP analysis systems. The microfluidic chip in this study is proposed with the aim of simplifying and minimizing TP analysis by replacing the conventional pretreatment process with a new method employing a thermally enhanced photocatalytic reaction that can be applied directly to a microfluidic chip of small size. The fabricated TP pretreatment microfluidic chip with thermally enhanced photocatalyst (TiO2) was optimized compared to the conventional pretreatment equipment (autoclave). The optimum pretreatment conditions using the proposed chip were pretreatment time of 10 min and temperature of 75 °C. The optimized pretreatment process using the proposed microfluidic chip showed similar performance to the conventional pretreatment method, even with shorter pretreatment time. The shorter pretreatment time and small size are advantages that enable the TP analysis system to be minimized. Therefore, the proposed TP pretreatment microfluidic chip based on thermally enhanced photocatalytic reaction in this study will be utilized to develop a portable TP analysis system.

    Description: Southern African savannas are an important dryland ecosystem, as they account for up to 54% of the landscape, support a rich variety of biodiversity, and are areas of key landscape change. This paper aims to address the challenges of studying this highly gradient landscape with a grass–shrub–tree continuum. This study takes place in South Luangwa National Park (SLNP) in eastern Zambia. Discretely classifying land cover in savannas is notoriously difficult because vegetation species and structural groups may be very similar, giving off nearly indistinguishable spectral signatures. A support vector machine classification was tested and it produced an accuracy of only 34.48%. Therefore, we took a novel continuous approach in evaluating this change by coupling in situ data with Landsat-level normalized difference vegetation index data (NDVI, as a proxy for vegetation abundance) and blackbody surface temperature (BBST) data into a rule-based classification for November 2015 (wet season) that was 79.31% accurate. The resultant rule-based classification was used to extract mean Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI values by season over time from 2000 to 2016. This showed a distinct separation between each of the classes consistently over time, with woodland having the highest NDVI, followed by shrubland and then grassland, but an overall decrease in NDVI over time in all three classes. These changes may be due to a combination of precipitation, herbivory, fire, and humans. This study highlights the usefulness of a continuous time-series-based approach, which specifically integrates surface temperature and vegetation abundance-based NDVI data into a study of land cover and vegetation health for savanna landscapes, which will be useful for park managers and conservationists globally.

    Description: The development of multimodal sensor-based applications designed to support learners with the improvement of their skills is expensive since most of these applications are tailor-made and built from scratch. In this paper, we show how the Presentation Trainer (PT), a multimodal sensor-based application designed to support the development of public speaking skills, can be modularly extended with a Virtual Reality real-time feedback module (VR module), which makes usage of the PT more immersive and comprehensive. The described study consists of a formative evaluation and has two main objectives. Firstly, a technical objective is concerned with the feasibility of extending the PT with an immersive VR Module. Secondly, a user experience objective focuses on the level of satisfaction of interacting with the VR extended PT. To study these objectives, we conducted user tests with 20 participants. Results from our test show the feasibility of modularly extending existing multimodal sensor-based applications, and in terms of learning and user experience, results indicate a positive attitude of the participants towards using the application (PT+VR module).

    Description: The acquisition of data in protected natural environments is subordinated to actions that do not stress the life-forms present in that environment. This is why researchers face two conflicting interests: autonomous and robust systems that minimize the physical interaction with sensors once installed, and complex enough ones to capture and process higher volumes of data. On the basis of this situation, this paper analyses the current state-of-the-art of wireless multimedia sensor networks, identifying the limitations and needs of these solutions. In this sense, in order to improve the trade-off between autonomous and computational capabilities, this paper proposes a heterogeneous multiprocessor sensor platform, consisting of an ultra-low power microcontroller and a high-performance processor, which transfers control between processors as needed. This architecture allows the shutdown of idle systems and fail-safe remote reprogramming. The sensor equipment can be adapted to the needs of the project. The deployed equipment incorporates, in addition to environmental meteorological variables, a microphone input and two cameras (visible and thermal) to capture multimedia data. In addition to the hardware description, the paper provides a brief description of how long-range (LoRa) can be used for sending large messages (such as an image or a new firmware), an economic analysis of the platform, and a study on energy consumption of the platform according to different use cases.

    Description: Cameron Highland is a popular tourist hub in the mountainous area of Peninsular Malaysia. Most communities in this area suffer frequent incidence of debris flow, especially during monsoon seasons. Despite the loss of lives and properties recorded annually from debris flow, most studies in the region concentrate on landslides and flood susceptibilities. In this study, debris-flow susceptibility prediction was carried out using two data mining techniques; Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) models. The existing inventory of debris-flow events (640 points) were selected for training 70% (448) and validation 30% (192). Twelve conditioning factors namely; elevation, plan-curvature, slope angle, total curvature, slope aspect, Stream Transport Index (STI), profile curvature, roughness index, Stream Catchment Area (SCA), Stream Power Index (SPI), Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) and Topographic Position Index (TPI) were selected from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-derived Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. Multi-collinearity was checked using Information Factor, Cramer’s V, and Gini Index to identify the relative importance of conditioning factors. The susceptibility models were produced and categorized into five classes; not-susceptible, low, moderate, high and very-high classes. Models performances were evaluated using success and prediction rates where the area under the curve (AUC) showed a higher performance of MARS (93% and 83%) over SVR (76% and 72%). The result of this study will be important in contingency hazards and risks management plans to reduce the loss of lives and properties in the area.

    Description: A recent review of thermography studies in rheumatoid arthritis shows limited data about disease activity and mostly focuses on differences between the thermography of rheumatoid arthritis patients and typical subjects. A retrospective study compared patients with high disease activity (n = 50), moderate disease activity (n = 16), and healthy participants (n = 42), taking into account demographic, clinical, laboratory, and thermography parameters. We applied an infrared thermography sensor and a fingers examination protocol. Outcomes included the mean temperature of five fingers of a hand: In static, post-cooling, post-rewarming, the total change in mean temperature of fingers due to cold provocation, the total change in mean temperature of fingers due to rewarming, the area under the cooling curve, the area under the heating curve, the difference between the area under the rewarming and the cooling curve, and temperature intensity distribution maps. For patients with high disease activity, a lower area under the heating curve and a lower difference between the area under the rewarming curve and the cooling curve were observed, as well as a smaller total change in mean temperature due to rewarming, compared to patients with moderate disease activity (p 〈 0.05). Our study findings could be helpful in patients with an equivocal clinical examination.
