    Description: The increasing use of automated laser welding processes causes high demands on process monitoring. This work demonstrates methods that use a camera mounted on the focussing optics to perform pre-, in-, and post-process monitoring of welding processes. The implementation uses machine learning methods. All algorithms consider the integration into industrial processes. These challenges include a small database, limited industrial manufacturing inference hardware, and user acceptance.

    Description: This work presents methods for using the ceramic glow plug as a sensor element. This means that the ceramic glow plug will not only perform its conventional task as a heating element but will also provide information, such as motor speed, from the combustion chamber as a sensor. The main focus will be on the change in resistance, particularly under the influence of a temperature change, in the immediate vicinity of the ceramic glow plug.

    Description: The quasi-n-level operation of the flying capacitor converter (FCCs) is an optimized operation mode of a multilevel converter. The quasi-n-level operation of a multilevel converter was presented with an analysis of its advantages and disadvantages. For the Q2LB of the FCC, the theory as well as the control, modulation and balancing algorithms are presented. A medium voltage prototype was built to validate the theory.

    Description: Interaction with dynamic image content is challenging for user perception, cognition and motor action. This dissertation identifies appropriate gaze-based interaction techniques for moving object selection in image sequences using multiple cross-sectional and one longitudinal user study. Further investigations evaluate how gaze-based interaction and automated image exploitation algorithms support human video exploitation as well as whether gaze-based user task classification is feasible.

    Description: In this work, the first simulation model of oxygen depolarized cathodes (ODC), which are silver catalyst-based gas diffusion electrodes, is presented that considers the phase equilibrium of the gas-liquid interface and structure-related inhomogeneities in electrolyte distribution. By means of the model it has been identified that mass transport of water and ions in the liquid phase is a crucial factor for electrode performance and how it is influenced by the electrode structure.

    Description: This work presents a physically motivated model for predicting the current/voltage behavior of PEM fuel cells. Extensive impedance measurements and DRT analyses were used to identify and quantify all loss processes. The developed model was successfully validated and provides insights into the internal processes of the fuel cell. It enables targeted optimization and shows great potential for increasing the performance of PEM fuel cells.

    Description: A gyrotron is used in magnetically confined plasma experiments for heating, current drive, plasma stabilization and plasma diagnostics. This work presents the first design and construction of a multi-frequency / multi-purpose coaxial-cavity pre-prototype gyrotron operating at (136)/170/204 GHz with an output power of 2 MW. It is the first step towards operating frequencies up to 240 GHz using the coaxial-cavity gyrotron technology.

    Description: Microwave-assisted alkaline hydrolysis of PET can be 20 times faster and at lower temperatures. This work presents a novel industrial microwave applicator at 2.45 GHz with homogeneous distribution to support this reaction, which allows an efficient and continuous operation. In addition, an innovative dielectric and calorimetric measurements setup is presented. Furthermore, the modelling of the reaction kinetics based on the measured dielectric parameters is presented.

    Description: In this study the technical and economic feasibility of a 380 kV, 5 kA resistive type superconducting fault current limiter was investigated. Conceptual designs were developed with superconducting tapes cooled by liquid nitrogen and arranged in bifilar coils. A cryostat was designed using FEM simulations taking into account the non-linear voltage distribution. For the complete system including current limiting reactors and cooling system, the investment and operation costs were calculated.

First, this potential is identified and then it is shown how improvements could be made using machine learning. For this purpose, a database was generated. Using a fluorescent coating, with a temperature-dependent light emission, temperature changes can be calculated over 2D surfaces. The technique uncovered peculiar transient effects in novel HTS tape architectures and also helped to verify and better understand hot spot development in both insulated and non-insulated, HTS–wound pancake coils.

    Description: In the first part of this dissertation, a framework for the design of a CNN for FPGAs is presented, consisting of a preprocessing algorithm, an augmentation technique, a custom quantization scheme and a pruning step of the CNN. The combination of conventional image processing with neural networks is shown in the second part by an example from robotics, where an image-based visual servoing process is successfully conducted for a gripping process of a robot.

    Description: In this work, two methods are developed and evaluated to integrate and test functional chains of automotive lighting functions on simulation-based test systems. The focus is initially on an approach for the efficient use of light for the display of high contrasts in virtual night driving with a real driver assistance camera. Furthermore, a test method is developed to evaluate pixel-based lighting functions on a hardware-in-the-loop test system based on metrics. In this work, two methods to stimulate and test automotive front lighting functions on simulation-based test benches are developed and evaluated. The first approach deepens the idea to reach necessary high contrasts for virtual night driving with a real driver assistance camera by an efficient use of reflecting light. Furthermore, a test method is shown to test pixel-based lighting functions based on metrics on a hardware-in-the-loop test bench.

    Description: An important method to increase the spectral efficiency of wireless radio communication networks is the use of multiple-input multiple-output communication systems operating in the centimetre and millimetre wave region. How these multiple-input multiple-output communication systems can be realised with as little hardware effort as possible using hybrid beamforming architectures is the subject of this work.

    Description: The aim of this work is the design and validation of an image-based optimization of laser flatbed cutting machines to avoid tilted parts. If wheel-selective steered and driven vehicles are considered, challenges of urban regions can be met. In order to combine these development priorities with the alternative vehicle concept, an optimal suspension is designed for the vehicle concept. The topology optimization of a virtual wheel suspension takes place in interaction with a continuous, optimal dynamics vehicle control.

    Description: Mathematical optimization techniques are among the most successful tools for controlling technical systems optimally with feasibility guarantees. Yet, they are often centralized—all data has to be collected in one central and computationally powerful entity. Methods from distributed optimization overcome this limitation. Classical approaches, however, are often not applicable due to non-convexities. This work develops one of the first frameworks for distributed non-convex optimization.

The first is the investigation of producing filaments on copper-stabilized coated conductors, with striations made after or before electroplating the tape.
