    Description: A sophisticated reader ought to view with great skepticism the prospect of answering questions about the long-term future. The checkered history of predicting the future-from the famous declarations that humans would never fly to the Limits to Growth study to claims about the "New Economy"-has dissuaded policymakers from considering the effects of their decisions more than a few months or years ahead. However, today's choices will significantly influence the course of the twenty-first century. New analytic methods, enabled by modern computers, may transform our ability to reason systematically about the long term. This report reviews traditional methods of grappling with the morrow, from narratives to scenario analysis, which fail to address the multiplicity of plausible long-term futures. The authors demonstrate a quantitative approach to long-term policy analysis (LTPA). Robust decision methods enable decisionmakers to examine a vast range of plausible futures and design near-term, often adaptive, strategies to be robust across them. Reframing the question "What will the long-term future bring?" as "How can we choose actions today that will be consistent with our long-term interests?" these methods provide powerful analytic support to humans' innate capacity for "what-if-ing." Choosing the challenge of sustainable development as an example, the authors discuss how these methods may be applied to real-world LTPA and a wide range of other challenges of decisionmaking under conditions of deep uncertainty.

    Description: Radio communications in the range of 60 GHz enable multi-Gigabit/s network access in indoor environments. Due to the propagation characteristics of such signals only very short range radio transmission is feasible. In order to distribute these signals across large distances, analog transmission over optical fiber is considered. In this work, mode-locked laser diodes serve as optoelectronic oscillators for the generation of such signals. Their system-relevant properties are studied in detail.

Ventile dienen dazu den Fluidstrom in komplexen mikrofluidischen Systemen, aus Einsatzgebieten wie der Biologie, Chemie oder Biotechnologie, zu manipulieren. Mit steigender Komplexität der Mikrosysteme steigt auch die Anzahl der benötigten, individuell steuerbaren Mikroventile.

    Description: The aim of this work was to identify the patterns that can induce heating around implanted cardiac pacemakers during MRI and to develop strategies to counteract them. Two approaches were taken: computer simulations of the occurring electromagnetic field distributions and in-vitro experiments using phantoms in real MRI devices, both for conventional bore-hole and new open MRI systems. Using the open MRI, the observed heating could be reduced significantly.

Different concepts and approaches on device and design level for PAE improvements are analyzed, e.g. structural and layout changes of the GaN transistor and advanced circuit design techniques for PAE improvements of GaN HEMT HPAs.

    Description: Fracture of storage particles is considered to be one of the major reasons for capacity fade and increasing power loss in Li-ion batteries. In this work, we tackle the problem by merging a coupled model of mechanical stress and diffusion of Li-ions with a phase field description of an evolving crack. The novel approach allows us to study the evolution of the Li concentration together with the initiation and growth of a crack in an arbitrary geometry and without presuming a specific crack path.

    Description: Within the bioliq®-process, the organic phase of straw pyrolysis condensates can be gasified directly, while the aqueous phase can be mixed with char to form a slurry, which also can be gasified. For production and storage, several mixers and stirrers are examined. Grinding the porous and elongated char particles decelerates sedimentation and also reduces the viscosity. Thus, higher concentrated slurries can be mixed, which leads to higher stability.

Due to the highly dynamic oscillatory motion, the stiffness requirements to the tool structure and the basic machine have to be considered, which is the main purpose of this work. Based on these results, a concept of a mechanical adaption of the oscillating disc cutting process to an excavator attachment tool will be developed and tested on a prototype.

    Description: ECG recordings provide diagnostic relevant information on the de- and repolarisation sequences of the heart. A modification of the repolarisation sequence is assumed to cause Torsades de Pointes. Especially drug induced effects on the repolarisation processes are in focus, since some non-cardiac drugs have been associated with sudden cardiac death in the 1990s. The analysis of the ventricular repolarisation using a set of parameters depicting the morphology of the T-wave is introduced in this work. Therefore, new methods of fully automatic patient-specific QRS detection, beat classification and precise T-wave delineation are presented. Using these methods, medical studies are investigated regarding the modification of the T-wave by different compounds. Also the impact of the heart rate on the morphology of the T-wave is part of this research.The reliable identification of ventricular ectopic beats allows an analysis of the influence of these beats on subsequent heart beats. It turned out that the morphology of subsequent heart beats can significantly be changed. This might give new information on the proarrythmical risk of ventricular ectopic beats.

A novel method based on photobleaching was developed and tested showing satisfactory results.

Further increase of SOFC efficiency can be achieved by microstructural optimization of the oxygen-ion conducting electrolyte and the mixed ionic-electronic conducting cathode. By application of nanoscaled thin films, the exceptionally high efficiency allows the realization of mobile SOFCs.

A novel strategy is presented, that provides heating of the combustion chamber, without decreasing the catalyst converter heating significantly. The studies were carried out on a gasoline engine. Emissions were examined in detail. In addition, the flame propagation is evaluated experimentally.

    Description: Based on the Somatic Marker Hypothesis, an attempt is made to measure the anticipation of risky traffic situations by means of the electrodermal activity. The results indicate that the strength of the anticipatory electrodermal activity is systematically related to situational factors of a traffic situation. In addition, a model was derived that postulates an inverted U-shaped relationship between driver’s experience and anticipatory electrodermal activity.

    Description: In this book an efficient algorithm for estimating dense motion vector fields between different views of a scene is presented. The approach combines geometric constraints between two views of a static scene with a model to describe the apparent motion in the image plane. The estimation is performed using a maximum-a-posteriori-method yielding reliable results, which is demonstrated using challenging real world image sequences.

    Description: To estimate the reachable specific energy and power of aqueous Li-air batteries, a physical based model was developed, which for the first time includes the microstructure of Li-air cells. Parameters like solid/liquid interface resistances were quantified with help of a newly developed setup. Simulations based on the developed model revealed that even conservative estimations promise an increase in the specific energy by at least a factor of two compared to present Li-ion batteries.

This work presents a stereoscopic omnidirectional camera system for autonomous vehicles which resolves the problem of a limited field of view and provides a 360° panoramic view of the environment. We present a new projection model for these cameras and show that the camera setup overcomes major drawbacks of traditional perspective cameras in many applications.

The aim of this work was to optimize the fabrication process of hot-electron bolometers and gain a deeper understanding of the underlying processes. To achieve this, the fabrication of the superconducting thin films was optimized and the superconducting properties of the films were analyzed. Detectors fabricated using the results showed a record value for the noise temperature.

Beispiele hierfür sind die Leckageer-kennung in Gefahrenstofflagern und die Luftqualitätsüberwachung von Deponien. Die Grundlage einer solchen Quellenlokalisierung stellen räumlich verteilte Online-Konzentrationsmessungen dar, die beispiels-weise durch so genannte Elektronische Nasen ermöglicht werden.In dem vorliegenden Buch werden ausgehend von einem geometrischen Zugang neue, zweistufige Verfahren zur Quellenlokalisierung für die Ausbreitung durch turbulente Diffusion und Advektion vorgestellt.Grundidee des geometrischen Zugangs ist es, zunächst für jeden Sensor die Menge aller Punkte zu bestimmen, auf der sich aus der Sicht des einzelnen Sensors die Quelle befinden kann. Durch Bilden der Schnittmenge für mehrere Sensoren lässt sich dann daraus der Quellort ermitteln. Die entwickelten Verfahren umgehen die numerischen Schwierigkeiten der klassischen ausgangsfehlerbasierten einstufigen Verfahren (Maximum-likelihood-Schätzung) und liefern zudem Aussagen zur Existenz und Eindeutigkeit von Lösungen, zur Lage von Mehrfachlösungen sowie zur geeigneten Platzierung der Sensoren für die Quellenlokalisierung.Zahlreiche Simulationen und Experimente in einem industriellen Chemikalienlager belegen die Leistungsfähigkeit der neuen Verfahren.

    Description: In this book, a new procedure to analyze lithium-ion cells is introduced. The cells are disassembled to analyze their components in experimental cell housings. Then, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, time domain measurements and the Distribution function of Relaxation Times are applied to obtain a deep understanding of the relevant loss processes. This procedure yields a notable surplus of information about the electrode contributions to the overall internal resistance of the cell.

    Description: In this work, a maskless lithography device based on a micro-mirror array was designed and built. Single projection frames are seamlessly projected next to each other. Microfluidic chips of several cm² size comprising channels of 50 µm have been built of various polymers via direct lithography and casting. Also, bio-chemical ligand patterns comprising 256 different ligand densities have been created in a few seconds on a 5 mm² substrate with pixel sizes of a few µm.

    Description: In this work, printable organic tandem light emitting diodes for future cost-efficient, long-time stable and white light emitting devices are presented. The key to such multilayer devices is to develop charge carrier injection layers based on metal-oxides like WO3, MoO3, V2O5 and modified ZnO, which can be applied from precursors. Furthermore, these precursor-based approach enables the fabrication of OLED with inverted architecture as well as transparent light emitting diodes.

Gerade hier müssen die personellen und maschinellen Ressourcen permanent an die technologischen Veränderungen angepasst werden.Dabei wird immer wieder betont, dass menschliche Ressourcen im Gegensatz zu den meisten maschinellen vor allem in qualitativer Hinsicht (z.B. hinsichtlich der Beherrschung von Arbeitsaufgaben) flexibel anpassungsfähig sind. Darüber hinaus bleibt der Mensch - zumindest in positiven bis neutralen konjunkturellen und strukturellen Situationen - dem Unternehmen vielfach über einen sehr langen Zeitraum erhalten.Um die Potenziale der menschlichen Ressourcen angemessen in diese Veränderungsprozesse einzubeziehen, wird ein Planungswerkzeug vorgestellt, das eine wirkungsvolle Unterstützung der langfristigen Personalentwicklung darstellt.Die Funktionsweise des entwickelten Verfahrens wird anhand zweier praktischer Fälle vorgestellt.

    Description: Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde der Einsatz von Holzfaserdämmplatten als tragende Beplankung von aussteifenden Holztafeln untersucht. Auf der Grundlage von Versuchen werden die tragfähigkeitsrelevanten Parameter angegeben, die für die Abschätzung der Tragfähigkeit und die Bemessung notwendig sind. Es werden Modelle zur Berechnung der Tragfähigkeit von Holz-HFDP-Verbindungen vorgeschlagen. In Versuchen wurden die Tragfähigkeit und Steifigkeit von bauteilgroßen Wand- und Dachscheiben bestimmt.
