    Description: Radio communications in the range of 60 GHz enable multi-Gigabit/s network access in indoor environments. Due to the propagation characteristics of such signals only very short range radio transmission is feasible. In order to distribute these signals across large distances, analog transmission over optical fiber is considered. In this work, mode-locked laser diodes serve as optoelectronic oscillators for the generation of such signals. Their system-relevant properties are studied in detail.

    Description: This open access book makes a case for extending logic beyond its traditional boundaries, to encompass not only statements but also also questions. The motivations for this extension are examined in detail. It is shown that important notions, including logical answerhood and dependency, emerge as facets of the fundamental notion of entailment once logic is extended to questions, and can therefore be treated with the logician’s toolkit, including model-theoretic constructions and proof systems. After motivating the enterprise, the book describes how classical propositional and predicate logic can be made inquisitive—i.e., extended conservatively with questions—and what the resulting logics look like in terms of meta-theoretic properties and proof systems. Finally, the book discusses the tight connections between inquisitive logic and dependence logic.

    Description: Écrire la crise ce n'est pas la raconter. C'est montrer comment elle modifie nos manières de raconter. Encore faut-il s'entendre sur le mot lui-même car peut-on appeler crise (du grec « krisis » : changement brutal) cette lente dissolution des valeurs de la modernité qui nous fait entrer dans un « après » informulable, sinon par le terme souvent controversé de postmodernité ? Au-delà des polémiques que suscite cette notion, il s'agit ici de considérer le postmoderne non pas comme une régression anti-moderne mais comme la prise de conscience d'un certain nombre de dévoiements du projet moderne qui nous projettent dans une ère de turbulence dont les arts, et en particulier la littérature, portent la marque. Ainsi considéré, le postmodernisme n'est ni une école, ni une avant-garde. Il témoigne avant tout d'une crise de culture à la transition des deux siècles, qui s'est transformée en culture de la crise, de sorte que, non seulement la pensée, la science et les arts, s'en trouvent affectés, mais de manière plus profonde encore, la société et l'individu. C'est pourquoi cet essai se propose à la fois, d'examiner l'hypothèse postmoderne comme mise en turbulence des valeurs de la modernité, et de définir le postmodernisme en littérature comme une esthétique qui met en relation les configurations sociales et certaines formes d'écriture contemporaine.

    Description: In recent years, there has been an increased interest in exploring the connections between various disciplines of mathematics and theoretical physics such as representation theory, algebraic geometry, quantum field theory, and string theory. One of the challenges of modern mathematical physics is to understand rigorously the idea of quantization. The program of quantization by branes, which comes from string theory, is explored in the book. This open access book provides a detailed description of the geometric approach to the representation theory of the double affine Hecke algebra (DAHA) of rank one. Spherical DAHA is known to arise from the deformation quantization of the moduli space of SL(2,C) flat connections on the punctured torus. The authors demonstrate the study of the topological A-model on this moduli space and establish a correspondence between Lagrangian branes of the A-model and DAHA modules. The finite-dimensional DAHA representations are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the compact Lagrangian branes. Along the way, the authors discover new finite-dimensional indecomposable representations. They proceed to embed the A-model story in an M-theory brane construction, closely related to the one used in the 3d/3d correspondence; as a result, modular tensor categories behind particular finite-dimensional representations with PSL(2,Z) action are identified. The relationship of Coulomb branch geometry and algebras of line operators in 4d N = 2* theories to the double affine Hecke algebra is studied further by using a further connection to the fivebrane system for the class S construction. The book is targeted at experts in mathematical physics, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and string theory. This is an open access book.

Alle Beiträge wurden durch bewährte Autorenteams erarbeitet. Diese setzen sich aus Lehrenden und Forschenden der Berner Fachhochschule und Vertreterinnen und Vertretern der Unternehmenspraxis mit akademischem Background zusammen.     Description: À l’aube des temps modernes, l’Europe est secouée par une série d’affrontements religieux. Par routine ou par paresse, on pense en premier lieu à l’irruption de Martin Luther et des autres protagonistes de la Réforme protestante et à la scission de la chrétienté latine. Mais toute l’Europe n’est pas chrétienne : les temps modernes s’ouvrent avec l’expulsion, les conversions forcées et la persécution des juifs et des musulmans dans la péninsule Ibérique de la Reconquista. Et il y a une Europe ottomane, elle aussi pluri-religieuse. L’expérience européenne des conflits religieux se fait en outre dans un horizon global de la rencontre avec d’autres religions et civilisations où les Européens découvrent leur propre barbarie. Celle-ci s’exprime dans les atrocités des guerres civiles, des guerres de religion en France à l’action des troupes de Cromwell en Irlande. Partant de la pluralité religieuse de l’espace européen, les affrontements de la première modernité se lisent comme un douloureux processus d’apprentissage d’accepter et de gérer cette pluralité irréductible. Ainsi naît une notion et forme historique, politique et culturelle de l’Europe qui intègre dans sa constitution la conflictualité religieuse. Les contributions ici réunies analysent ce processus couvrant tout l’espace européen. Cet ouvrage est né de la collaboration d’un groupe d’historien(ne)s européen(ne)s spécialistes de ces questions et montre la richesse du paysage historiographique européen.

Aus dem Doppelauftrag von Schule, Persönlichkeitsbildung und Enkulturation wird zunächst ein Interaktionsmodell für Bildung und Erziehung abgeleitet. Das Problem der Inhaltsauswahl jeder Fachdidaktik wird mit einem Modell zur Verknüpfung von Allgemeiner Didaktik und Fachwissenschaften gelöst. Darin wird die Technikphilosophie als fehlende Bezugswissenschaft identifiziert, um Aussagen zum Wesen der Technik zu ermöglichen. Durch die Analyse technikphilosophischer Ansätze wird der Technikbegriff um eine ästhetische und eine Sinn- und Wertperspektive erweitert. Aus diesem Technikbegriff ergeben sich pädagogische Perspektiven für den Technikunterricht, die schließlich über einen Kulturreihenansatz zu einem Kern Technischer Allgemeinbildung führen. Durch den Kulturreihenansatz wird begründet umrissen, wie die kulturelle Bedeutung der Technik bildungswirksam werden kann.

Even with few alternative delivery periods, which allow vehicles to be used more efficiently, substantial savings can be achieved.

The book represents the warning process as a pathway linking observations to weather forecasts to hazard forecasts to socio-economic impact forecasts to warning messages to the protective decision, via a set of five bridges that cross the divides between the relevant organisations and areas of expertise. Each bridge represents the communication, translation and interpretation of information as it passes from one area of expertise to another and ultimately to the decision maker, who may be a professional or a member of the public. The authors explore the partnerships upon which each bridge is built, assess the expertise and skills that each partner brings and the challenges of communication between them, and discuss the structures and methods of working that build effective partnerships. The book is ordered according to the “first mile” paradigm in which the decision maker comes first, and then the production chain through the warning and forecast to the observations is considered second. This approach emphasizes the importance of co-design and co-production throughout the warning process. The book is targeted at professionals and trainee professionals with a role in the warning chain, i.e. in weather services, emergency management agencies, disaster risk reduction agencies, risk management sections of infrastructure agencies. This is an open access book.

It argues that the full digitisation of society sharply accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic has added extreme complexity to the world, conclusively exposing the inadequacy of our current model of knowledge creation. Addressing many of the different ways in which reality has been transformed by technology – the pervasive adoption of big data, the fetishisation of algorithms and automation, and the digitalisation of education and research – Viola examines how the rigid conceptualisation in disciplines’ division and competition is complicit of promoting a narrative which has paired computational methods with exactness and neutrality whilst stigmatising consciousness and criticality as carriers of biases and inequality. Taking the humanities as a focal point, the author retraces schisms in the field between the humanities, the digital humanities and critical digital humanities; these are embedded, she argues, within old dichotomies: sciences vs humanities, digital vs non-digital and authentic vs non-authentic. Through the analysis of personal use cases and exploring a variety of applied contexts such as digital heritage practices, digital linguistic injustice, critical digital literacy and critical digital visualisation, the book shows a third way: knowledge creation in the digital.

By focusing on 12 of the largest sending countries to the EU, the book tackles the issue of the multiple areas of sending state intervention towards migrant populations. Two “mirroring” chapters are dedicated to each of the 12 non-EU states analysed (Argentina, China, Ecuador, India, Lebanon, Morocco, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey). One chapter focuses on access to social benefits across five core policy areas (health care, unemployment, old-age pensions, family benefits, guaranteed minimum resources) by discussing the social protection policies that non-EU countries offer to national residents, non-national residents, and non-resident nationals. The second chapter examines the role of key actors (consulates, diaspora institutions and home country ministries and agencies) through which non-EU sending countries respond to the needs of nationals abroad. The volume additionally includes two chapters focusing on the peculiar case of the United Kingdom after the Brexit referendum. Overall, this volume contributes to ongoing debates on migration and the welfare state in Europe by showing how non-EU sending states continue to play a role in third country nationals’ ability to deal with social risks.     Description: This open access book examines how Pinewood came to be Britain’s dominant film studio complex, focusing on key years following the Second World War. It presents a revisionist, micro history of the studio and its longevity during a particularly turbulentperiod, explaining Pinewood’s survival at a time when other major film studios such as Denham closed. This book also provides contemporary insights into how Pinewood’s technologies, practices, and filmmaking methods compared to Hollywood’s. Thirteen films produced in1946–47 are analysed in detail, tracking how economic pressures engendered many creative techniques and innovative technologies. Prevailing cultures of management and labour organization are foregrounded, as well as insights into being a studio employee. These are vividly brought to life through an in-depthfocus on the in-house studio magazine Pinewood Merry-Go-Round, which provides rare details of sports and leisure activities organized at the studios.

    Description: In this work, a novel measurement system for the analysis of the gyrotron RF output spectrum was developed. It enables unprecedented time dependent measurements within a large bandwidth, dynamic range and unambiguous RF indication in the entire D-Band (110-170 GHz). Special attention was given to the investigation of parasitic RF oscillations, and the analysis of the interplay of thermal cavity expansion and ionization-based space charge neutralization at the start of long RF pulses.

Although the massification of higher education systems has facilitated the participation of students from deprived backgrounds, socioeconomic inequalities persist in access to the most prestigious institutions and programmes. Privileged students benefit from a number of advantages in the competition for selective and scarce places: access to information, lower aversion to debt, higher expectations, better previous schooling and higher academic achievement. The chapters present a critical analysis of equity policies in different countries – with or without affirmative action policies, within a context of neoliberal policies or within a social democratic model – and the reasons why they have failed to promote equity and fairness, preventing students from achieving their full educational potential.     Description: This book explores the interrelation between diversity in migrants’ internal relations and their experience of inequality in local and global contexts. Taking the case of Hamburg-based Iranians, it traces evaluation processes in ties between professionals – artists and entrepreneurs – since the 1930s, examining migrants’ potential to act upon hierarchical structures. Building on long-term ethnographic fieldwork and archival work, the book centers on differentiation, combining a diversity study with a focus on locality, with a transnational migration study, analysing strategies of capital creation and anthropological value theory.     Description: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book addresses the age-old problem of infinite regresses in epistemology. How can we ever come to know something if knowing requires having good reasons, and reasons can only be good if they are backed by good reasons in turn? The problem has puzzled philosophers ever since antiquity, giving rise to what is often called Agrippa's Trilemma. The current volume approaches the old problem in a provocative and thoroughly contemporary way. Taking seriously the idea that good reasons are typically probabilistic in character, it develops and defends a new solution that challenges venerable philosophical intuitions and explains why they were mistakenly held. Key to the new solution is the phenomenon of fading foundations, according to which distant reasons are less important than those that are nearby. The phenomenon takes the sting out of Agrippa's Trilemma; moreover, since the theory that describes it is general and abstract, it is readily applicable outside epistemology, notably to debates on infinite regresses in metaphysics. The book is a potential game-changer and a must for any advanced student or researcher in the field.

    Description: Il y a deux cents ans, le décret impérial du 17 mars 1808, en 144 articles, organisait l’Université impériale fondée en 1806. Restaurant les facultés, précisant les grades mais aussi la hiérarchie interne du personnel administratif et enseignant, cet imposant décret jetait les bases de notre système contemporain d’Instruction publique. C’est aussi par ce décret qu’apparaît le recteur d’académie, défini comme le représentant direct du Grand-Maître parisien, chef d’un espace territorial nouveau, l’académie, composée d’un regroupement de plusieurs départements pour la gestion des affaires éducatives. Parfois menacée de suppression, souvent modifiée dans ses attributions règlementaires, la fonction rectorale a surmonté les multiples changements de régime qu’a connus la France depuis 1808, s’affirmant comme une spécificité française. Cet ouvrage revient sur les deux cents ans d’engagements polymorphes des recteurs d’académie au service du développement de l’Instruction publique. Il associe de larges synthèses sur la naissance de la fonction et les principales phases de son évolution, les analyses plus spécifiques sur certains de leurs engagements, tout en proposant des études de cas académiques ou biographiques.     Description: De la Hollande aux Fens anglais, du Schleswig-Holstein à la plaine padane, l’Europe moderne a été marquée par la conquête des marais littoraux et intérieurs. Bien qu’elle n’ait pas souffert de faim de terres, la France a également participé à cette modernisation agricole modifiant les rapports entre l’homme et la nature. Par le prisme de l’histoire de neuf marais asséchés en France au cours du XVIIe, cet ouvrage, fondé sur l’exploitation d’archives nombreuses, françaises et néerlandaises, met en lumière le rôle de la monarchie et de son aristocratie ministérielle dans la conduite de ce processus. Grâce à des dispositifs juridiques et des méthodes de gestion novateurs, mais aussi par un soutien politique constant, la monarchie a permis la mise en culture d’espaces traditionnellement consacrés à la pêche, à la chasse ou à la cueillette. Richelieu et ses créatures, puis Mazarin et ses associés ont ainsi procédé à l’importation d’un modèle hydraulique et agricole d’inspiration néerlandaise, ancré dans l’économie européenne et aux conséquences sociales et environnementales encore marquantes de nos jours. Les bonifications françaises du XVIIe siècle montrent l’importance des liens entre les élites politiques françaises et les élites commerçantes néerlandaises. Ainsi, l’histoire des assèchements offre un regard original sur l’histoire politique du XVIIe siècle français, révélant les enjeux territoriaux de la centralisation monarchique et du développement de l’État.

Addressing the main challenges in image data analysis, where acquisition by powerful imaging devices results in very large amounts of collected image data, the book discusses techniques relying on batch and GPU programming, as well as on powerful deep learning-based algorithms. In addition, downstream data processing techniques are introduced, such as Python libraries for data organization, plotting, and visualizations.     Description: This open access book explores the past and present of Quanzhou (Zayton) and the rich diversity and tolerance that kindled Quanzhou’s innovativeness and helped it prosper both commercially and culturally—values that are today being embraced by China’s global trade partners. Quanzhou (Zayton), Marco Polo’s port of departure and Columbus’ goal in China, was not only the start of the Maritime Silk Road and the Middle Age’s greatest port but also centuries ahead of its time in its tolerance and diversity. The fabled “City of Light” had 7 mosques for its 40,000 Muslims, some of whom served in government, as well as 3 Franciscan cathedrals funded in part by the emperor, Jewish synagogues, and centers for Nestorian Christians, Hindus, Taoists, Manicheans, Jains, etc. As Franciscan Bishop Andrew of Perugia wrote in 1322, “Tis a fact that in this vast empire, there are people of every nation under heaven, and every sect, and all and sundry are allowed to live freely according to their creed.” In 2021, UNESCO designated “Quanzhou, Emporium of the World,” as a world heritage site, and the city is now the hub of the Belt and Road Initiative, the 21st Century Silk Road, which was inspired by ancient Quanzhou.

    Description: The aim of this work was to identify the patterns that can induce heating around implanted cardiac pacemakers during MRI and to develop strategies to counteract them. Two approaches were taken: computer simulations of the occurring electromagnetic field distributions and in-vitro experiments using phantoms in real MRI devices, both for conventional bore-hole and new open MRI systems. Croisant les notions de citoyenneté, de responsabilité et de droits civiques, ainsi que les questionnements autour de la politisation de la science, cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de la médicalisation du corps noir par la profession psychiatrique aux États-Unis, du xxe siècle jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. Conjuguant l’histoire et la sociologie, il est ainsi question de retracer les différents régimes par lesquels la notion de race a été jugée pertinente par les psychiatres pour naturaliser les différences corporelles des années 1920 jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. En s’appuyant sur un corpus d’archives personnelles de médecins, d’institutions de soins et de centres de recherche en psychiatrie, ainsi que sur une enquête qualitative réalisée auprès de psychiatres en Californie, ce livre démontre que la catégorie de race irrigue encore et toujours les pratiques et les discours institutionnels, aussi bien dans les représentations que les médecins véhiculent des corps soignés, que dans les stratégies de naturalisation du social employées pour prendre en charge leurs patients.

Schließlich, um negativen Altersbildern und Vorurteilen über die Lebensqualität im hohen Alter empirisch fundiert entgegenwirken zu können. Die Studie "Hohes Alter in Deutschland“ (D80+) ist eine bundesweit repräsentative Querschnittsbefragung der hochaltrigen Menschen in Privathaushalten und in Heimen. Sie wird vom Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend (BMFSFJ) gefördert und gemeinsam vom Cologne Center for Ethics, Rights, Economics, and Social Sciences of Health (ceres) und dem Deutschen Zentrum für Altersfragen (DZA) durchgeführt. Die Studie vereint Perspektiven der an den beteiligten Institutionen verorteten Disziplinen wie Soziologie, Psychologie, Versorgungswissenschaften, Gerontologie und Medizin.     Description: Verbrennungsprozesse sind meist mit der Emission von Schadstoffen verbunden, weshalb sie möglichst schadstoffarm und energieeffizient geführt werden müssen.Bei den bislang dominierenden primären Brennstoffen sind aufgrund der gleichbleibenden Brennstoffeigenschaften langfristig optimierte Technologien und feste Regelungen einsetzbar. Zunehmend werden jedoch sekundäre Brennstoffe wie Prozessabgase oder Biomasse genutzt. Sie haben stark veränderliche chemisch-physikalische Eigenschaften und bewirken so einen veränderlichen Verbrennungsablauf der schwierig beherrschbar ist. Eine optimale Verbrennung lässt sich dann nur durch eine an den Verbrennungszustand und die Brennstoffe adaptierte modellbasierte Prozessregelung erreichen, die noch nicht Stand der Technik ist.Die Arbeit widmet sich im ersten Schwerpunkt dem modellbasierten Reglungsentwurf. Die theoretische Modellierung und der modellbasierte Entwurf adaptiver Regelungen für die Temperatur und die Sauerstoffkonzentration im Abgas wird am Beispiel einer halbtechnischen Brennkammer für veränderliche Brenngase analysiert. Berücksichtigt wird dabei das für Verbrennungen typische vorhaltbehaftete Regelstreckenverhalten.Der zweite Schwerpunkt bildet die online Messung und die rechnerba-sierte Auswertung von Zustandsgrößen am Beispiel der infrarotbasierten Temperaturmessung bei einem Feststoffbrennbett. Es werden neue Auswerteverfahren entwickelt, die sich u.a. auch bei der Regelung industrieller Verbrennungen bewährt haben.

    Direct hydroxylation of benzene to phenol in a microstructured Pd-based membrane reactor (2021)

    Description: The gas phase direct hydroxylation of benzene into phenol with hydrogen and oxygen, as initially described by Niwa in 2002, was realized in a newly developed double-membrane reactor. In the concept described by Niwa, a dense Pd membrane is used for the (safe) dosage of dissociated hydrogen species into the tubular reaction zone, where it reacts with gas phase oxygen to form surface species capable of directly converting benzene into phenol in a single-step process.

    Description: High temperature superconducting (HTS) bulks and stacks of coated conductors can be magnetized to become trapped-field magnets that provide much stronger magnetic fields than those reachable with conventional permanent magnets. This work investigates the flux dynamics during the magnetization of HTS trapped-field magnets and proposes possible strategies to improve the trapped field produced by the pulsed field magnetization method that is promising for practical applications.

    Advanced Elastocaloric Cooling Devices Based on Shape Memory Alloy Films (2022)

    Description: Elastocaloric cooling is an emerging solid-state cooling technology with the potential to provide environmentally friendly, efficient cooling. The elastocaloric effect in superelastic shape memory alloy films is used to develop advanced cooling devices for small-scale applications. Cascaded and parallelized devices are developed to increase device temperature span and cooling capacity. The concepts are proven experimentally, a maximum temperature span of 27° C is achieved in a cascaded device.

    Influence of elevated temperatures up to 100 °C on the mechanical properties of concrete (2021)

    Description: Experiments to characterize the effects of moisture content and temperature on the mechanical properties of concrete were conducted. Based on these experiments, a new overall material model capable of predicting the mechanical behaviour of concrete subject to elevated temperatures up to 100 °C was developed. The material model estimates the time, temperature and moisture dependency of the compressive and tensile strength, creep and shrinkage of concrete.

This work details a specialized experimental set-up to enable large scale roll to roll processing. Material properties such as surface energy, surface tension, and viscosity are presented and modelled. The impact of coating method, as well as process parameters (e.g. coating speed, shear rate, solvent composition) on process stability and film properties, is discussed.

    Description: This open access book provides a comprehensive treatment of recent developments in kernel-based identification that are of interest to anyone engaged in learning dynamic systems from data. The reader is led step by step into understanding of a novel paradigm that leverages the power of machine learning without losing sight of the system-theoretical principles of black-box identification. The authors’ reformulation of the identification problem in the light of regularization theory not only offers new insight on classical questions, but paves the way to new and powerful algorithms for a variety of linear and nonlinear problems. Regression methods such as regularization networks and support vector machines are the basis of techniques that extend the function-estimation problem to the estimation of dynamic models. Many examples, also from real-world applications, illustrate the comparative advantages of the new nonparametric approach with respect to classic parametric prediction error methods.     Description: Comprehension of the beating of the human heart is important for cardiac research and will improve many clinical applications. Simulations based on models describing cardiac electro-mechanics can acquire insights into this behavior. This work focuses on the mathematical reconstruction of electrophysiology, excitation conduction, and tension development in the human heart on the cellular and the tissue level. The tissue models represent accurate anatomical shapes of the atria and the ventricles and incorporate electrophysiological heterogeneity and anisotropic conduction. The simulations comprehend the physiological behavior of the ventricles and of the atrium including the sinoatrial node as well as pathological cases like ventricular and atrial fibrillation and genetic defects in ionic channels.
