Description: Artists in Revolution offers fresh and provocative essays on the life and art of eight leading figures of the Russian avant-garde during Russia's revolutionary age. Each of the artists made highly innovative contributions to the development of Russian (and some, indeed, to world) cultureduring this period, and the book utilizes both the traditional approaches of intellectual history and biography and some statistical and psychohistorical characterizations of larger groups of artists.

Description: Deeply religious, steadfast in battle, instinctively deferential to his officers—this was the established image of the Russian soldier at the time of the revolution of 1905. The Russian army's principal role in that upheaval, it is generally believed, was the suppression of civil disorder. Challenging this conventional wisdom, John Bushnell's startling study shows that the army itself was in a state of rebellion.

Description: For many years teachers of English felt that linguistics had little to do with their day-to-day classroom activities. More recently, during a period of change which affected the teaching of many subjects, the attitude toward linguistics underwent a sudden and sharp reversal. Linguistic methods of English teaching became a common topic of formal and informal discussion. Today there is a real danger that the profession may be expecting too much from linguistics. In this volume Mr. Marckwardt presents a cool, realistic analysis of the possible applications of linguistics to English teaching at all levels of instruction. He deals first with the direct application of linguistics to the teaching of grammar and to thorny questions of usage. Next, he considers the areas where the use of linguistics is partial or indirect: composition, spelling, reading, and literature. Finally, because he believes that all teaching must be conducted in terms of a broad educational philosophy, the author includes a discussion of the place of language study in the curriculum.

Description: Phonological Markedness and Distinctive Features establishes a new set of parameters for use in phonological studies of language . Arthur Brakel finds the exciting well-known approaches to phonological description overly elaborate but at the same time inadequate for enumerating and analyzing the many sounds linguists know occur. In their place, he proposes a new set of nineteen articulatory primes based on a priori semiotic principles that establish a distinctive value or markedness of a particular sound quality or articulatory gesture . He bolsters his new theory by testing the primes with examples from the phonemes of twenty-three largely unrelated languages.

Description: Crime Victim Stories looks at the frightening world of urban violence. Eleanor Wachs analyzes stories of muggings and other crime experiences told by native New Yorkers. By using the personal-experience narrative, the author shows how these shocking stories about the danger and violence of city streets reveal attitudes toward crime, urban groups, and life in general in New York City. These true accounts, frequently embedded in social conversations, suggest ways in which city folk plan to thwart future victimization and tell how a candidate for a mugging—almost anyone—can avoid becoming a victim. These narratives reveal that two standard folklore forms, the urban legend and the shaggy dog story, are the underlying models of crime-victim stories. Oral stories about urban crime often differ from their newspaper counterparts, demonstrating the tenacity of oral tradition in a cosmopolitan environment. Readers will be surprised to learn that these horrifying, and sometimes titillating, stories are filled with stock characters such as the trickster mugger and the clever victim who try to outsmart each other. Crime Victim Stories presents oft-told tales of city life that sometimes shock, often entertain, and also enhance our understanding of daily experience in what is believed to be one of America's most dangerous cities.

Description: Drawing upon theories of folkloristic performance, deconstructive criticism, and reader-response theory, Sandra Dolby Stahl has developed a unique methodology for the examination of oral personal narratives, stories that people tell based on their own experiences. Such stories are not traditional in the usual sense but are instead a creative response to experience and the tradition of narration. Hearing such stories is also a creative response, one that requires the perception of traditions or "allusions" in the story and its performance. It is to these interpretive allusions that our attention is drawn throughout the book. Stahl begins her analysis with a discussion of the genre of personal narrative and the seemingly universal practice of turning events and experiences into narratives. She also discusses the state of interpretive research in folkloristics. Folk-narrative research has generally been analytical, attending to questions of form, structure, style, or function; few interpretive studies of folk narrative have been published. Because the personal narrative has only recently become a part of folklore research, Stahl's interpretive attention to the genre is unprecedented. Her study includes two lengthy chapters in which two transcribed narrative texts are meticulously analyzed and subjectively interpreted-as allusion upon allusion creates meaning for the listener (and reader).

Description: This volume of essays constitutes an up-to-date survey of pidgin and creole linguistics intended for general linguists and readers interested in current theory in such diverse areas as linguistic universals, language acquisition, bilingualism, and language planning. It will acquaint persons relatively unfamiliar with the field with established theories and data, enabling them to follow current debates and to undertake research in the field. Thus it may serve as a basic textbook in courses in sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and language contact, as well as in ethno- or anthropological linguistics, whose focus is language variation and its social and cultural implications. The volume includes a global survey of the distribution of pidgin and creole languages, accompanied by a world distribution map and detailed maps of the Caribbean and other areas. Contributors to this work are Albert Valdman, David DeCamp, Pieter Muysken, Guus Meijer, Derek Bickerton, Elizabeth Closs Traugott, Charles A. Ferguson, Charles E. DeBose, Gabriel Manessy, John R. Rickford, Robert Le Page, Robert Chaudenson, Ian F. Hancock, Keith Whinnom, Dennis R. Craig, and Stephen A. Wurm.

Description: A state-of-the-art survey of a wide spectrum of sub-disciplines within linguistics by some of the most prominent contributors to linguistic theory of our day. The areas covered include phonology, syntax, semantics, discourse theory, sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics. Taken together, the eight essays in this volume do more than exemplify a number of the most interesting approaches being taken in linguistics today: they point the directions in which the discipline and its most exciting sub-fields are likely to move in the coming decade. The essays and their authors are: "Conditions on Rules of Grammar" by Noam Chomsky; "The Sociology of Language: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" by Joshua A. Fishman; "Topics in Lexical Semantics" by Charles J. Fillmore; "Semantic Domains and Componential Analysis of Meaning" by Eugene A. Nida, Johannes P. Louw, and Ronda! B. Smith; "Intentions, Assumptions, and Contradictions in Historical Linguistics" by Henry Hoenigswald; "Metonymy and Misunderstanding: An Aspect of Language Change" by Rulon S. Wells; "The Recall and Verbalizatfon of Past Experience" by Wallace L. Chafe; and "New Directions in Phonological Theory: Language Acquisition and Universals Research" by Charles A. Ferguson.

Description: This pathbreaking work lays a new foundation for linguistics: It focuses on people rather than on language and is governed by science rather than grammar or philosophy. A linguistics built on this foundation avoids many intellectual problems, it can confront the full observational details of how people communicate, and provides greater relevance to studies in psychology, sociology, culture, and literature. The goal is nothing less than to provide the basis for a new scientific linguistics. The thesis that grammar and science are incompatible is developed in a carefully reasoned argument that explores the ancient foundations of grammar and considers the widely accepted goals of modern scientific linguistics. Out of this comes the insight that linguistics must choose between being a discipline of pure grammar that studies language as an abstract relation between sound and meaning and rejects science or a scientific discipline that studies people and how they communicate as part of the physical world. Professor Yngve lays out a new and formal notational apparatus capable of confronting in detail all the evidence of how people communicate . His approach provides formal methods suitable for studying previously difficult pragmatic, contextual, and variational phenomena. And it promises to provide greater relevance to adjacent disciplines, such as physiology, psychology, anthropology, sociology, semiotics, cultural and literary studies.

Description: By showing the reader the intricacies of face-to-face sociolinguistic interaction, William Beeman provides a key to understanding Iranian social and political life. He recorded and studied mundane conversations; greetings; discussions of crops, marriages, and village happenings; gossip; social talk at weddings, dinners, and religious ceremonies; and talk among people at work. Various patterns of social interaction, such as pronoun usage, significant pauses, and gestures, are analyzed here in terms of their contributions to the overall meaning of the conversation. While focusing on Iran, Beeman's study in cross-cultural linguistics will clearly be a model for the study of different languages and cultures.

Description: China's cultural revolution of the 1960s had an important precedent in the Soviet Union during the First Five-Year Plan, when established authorities and institutions in culture and the professions came under attack from militant Communist intellectuals. One of the most challenging questions for the student ofthis turbulent era is the actual nature of the revolution. Was it "revolution from above," initiated and controlled by the Party leadership, or "revolution from below," brought on by Marxist radicals within the cultural professions and pressure from an upwardly mobile working class? This important book, focused on the transition from NEP to Stalinism, presents both sides of the vigrous current debate.

Description: The purpose of this book is to tell the story of the emergency and evolution of the new Soviet cooperatives, and the evolution of the new Soviet cooperatives, and their experiences during the first four years of their existence. What is shown is that, in spite of restrictions placed on their activity, they developed extremely rapidly. It became obvious that there was a reserve of entrepreneurial talents ready to be liberated. What developed, however, over the four-year period 1987–1990 was not private enterprise in the full Western sense of the term; not all of the cooperatives were free-standing, independent organizations. On the contrary, what developed were also forms that combined the state and private sectors in a variety of ways.

Description: The Theory of Oral Composition presents the first history of the new field of oral-formulaic theory, which arose from the pioneering research of Milman Parry and Albert Lord on the Homeric poems. From their studies an interdisciplinary field of research and scholarship has emerged that draws on the methods of literary studies, folklore, anthropology, and linguistics. Foley examines the roots of oral-formulaic theory in nineteenth-century philology and anthropology, documents the contributions of Parry and Lord, measures the effect of Lord's comparative extensions through the impact of The Singer of Tales, and considers important recent contributions. A select bibliography of more than 700 items and a subject-author index enhance the scholarly usefulness of this study.

Description: In the early 1960s, searching for a fresh style and a new way of bringing their words to the Soviet public, a number of Russian poets began singing their verse to their own solo accompaniment on the traditional seven-stringed guitar. At about the same time, tape recorders became widely available in the USSR. Privately recorded and circulated on tape—a process called magnitizdat—guitar poetry quickly became the most popular form of dissident culture in the post-Stalin period. The guitar poets and their songs are known and loved throughout the USSR. Songs to Seven Strings is the first book in any language about this unusual literary genre. Smith places guitar poetry within the context of official "mass song"; "middle ground" songs, where official and unofficial cultures overlap; and the strong underground traditions of the gypsy song, cruel romance, and criminal song.

Description: Stylistics is at a crossroad, according to Timothy Austin. It must find a way of bridging the chasm that separates it from deconstructionism and a means of restoring the faith of disillusioned stylists, like Stanley Fish and his followers, in its precepts. Offering a new, comprehensive, and clearly articulated theory of stylistics, Language Crafted is a first—and giant—step toward the goal of the revitalization of stylistics. Austin sets out the standards that a general theory of stylistics must meet. It must delimit its range of phenomena; it should offer a well-defined theoretical model, complete with theoretical categories and a description of the ways those categories relate to one another; it must evaluate the capacity of the model to analyze data in an approp- riate and elegant way; and it should examine the implications of its conclusions for associated fields. Using these standards, Austin outlines a linguistic theory of poetic syntax, elaborating on its provisions and extending its exemplifications to cover a broad spectrum of authors and texts. Austin's refreshing approach to poetic syntax offers great hope for a positive and productive future for the discipline of stylistics.

Description: The career of Constantine P. Pobedonostsev is immensely important to an understanding of what has happened in Russia during the past century. Known to historians as the arch-reactionary of nineteenth-century Russia and the man most responsible for the repressive policies of Tsar Alexander III, Pobedonostsev's influence extended well beyond his own lifetime. A bureaucrat, legal scholar, editor, propagandist, tutor, and advisor to the last two tsars, theologian and powerful religious leader, Pobedonostsev left his imprint on nearly every aspect of Russian life. In the political realm, his savage opposition to moderate reform crushed early efforts at constitutional government, helped prepare the climate for revolution, and profoundly affected the course of history under the Soviets. As a philosopher, he represents the mainstream of Russian intellectual history during the nineteenth century.

Description: The iconoclastic theories of the Russian revolutionist and socialist feminist Aleksandra Kollontai (1872–1952) will strike many readers as startlingly contemporary. It is hardly surprising that her life and writings, only recently rediscovered by readers outside Russia, have profoundly influenced many Western radical feminists, some of whom regards her as a role model. Bolshevik Feminist, the first full-scale biography of this magnetic figure to appear in the United States, follows the life of Kollontai from her birth in St. Petersburg in 1872 to her death in Moscow eighty years later.

Description: Dillon draws upon recent studies of language processing to ask how linguistic form shapes readers' (or hearers') responses to literary texts. The resulting model of comprehension gives an explicit account of the strategies readers may use in analyzing and comprehending passages from Spenser, Milton, Wordsworth, Henry James, Faulkner, Wallace Stevens, and other notoriously "difficult" writers. Dillon's model bears on many of the major issues in current literary theory, such as whether and how "literary" reading differs from other kinds of reading and what the function and importance of ambiguity is within a literary work. The book's overall aim is to supplant William Empson's Seven Types of Ambiguity as an account of how we do and should read literature.

Despite unavailing efforts at reform, it has now been abandoned, as the republics of the former USSR move painfully toward the market. In The Failure of Soviet Economic Planning: System, Performance, Reform Robert W. Campbell, one of the most respected U.S. specialists on the economy of the former Soviet Union, probes the evolution, behavior, and fatal weaknesses of the Soviet administrative-command economy.

Description: With The Sense of Grammar, Peircean studies take a giant step forward, moving from a preoccupation with textual exegesis into the battleground of linguistic analysis. Working along the lines suggested by Peirce's theory of signs, as interpreted within the context of the philosopher's entire oeuvre, Michael Shapiro proposes a major reorientation of linguistic theory and a shift in the ultimate goals of the study of language structure. Part One provides a theoretical dissection of Peirce's semeiotic and evaluates its importance to structural linguistics. In it Shapiro grapples with the main differences between the theory of signs as Peirce held it before and after 1906. He then applies Peirce's semeiotic to the development of a new theory of grammar, which he tests in Part Two. Drawing examples primarily from the Russian language, Shapiro demonstrates how Peircean semeiotics engages the actual problems of linguistic structure subtended by real data and resolves them in the areas of phonology, morphophonemics, and morphology and semantics.

Description: According to Stalin, Soviet music was to be "an art national in form and socialist in content." The degree to wich this dictum has been followed in modern Russian music is scrupulously recorded in the enlarged edition of Music and Musical Life in Soviet Russia. It contains Boris Schwarz' frank comentary on Soviet music, composers, concerts, competitions, and musical conditions in the Soviet Union. But the book as a whole is more than a musical history. It encompasses the growth of Soviet cultural life—not only composition and performane, but also ballet and opera, educational institutions and curricula, books and journals on music, and musical "politics."

Description: Bohlman examines folk music as a genre of folklore from a broadly cross-cultural perspective. His study espouses a more expansive view of folk music, a view stressing the vitality of folk music in non-Western cultures as well as Western, in the present as well as the past. A wide range of examples—especially from the Middle East and American ethnic communities—illustrates the sheer richness of folk music in the twentieth century. A reconsideration of the folk musician as an agent of creativity underscores the book's assertion that folk music is not a disappearing genre, but rather an expressive behavior intrinsically part of the modern world.

Description: Most twentieth-century attempts to develop a linguistic approach to literature rest on the assumption that litera-ture exists by opposition to all other uses of language—an assumption traditionally expressed as an opposition between "poetic" and "ordinary" language. Departing radically from this view, and drawing upon the findings of both sociolinguists and speech act theoreticians, Pratt argues against the notion that literature is formally and functionally distinct from our other verbal activities and points the way toward a unified theory of discourse. She shows how the poetic language argument, expounded by the Russian Formalists and developed by structuralists, fails, first on its own grounds, and second in the face of data from non-literary discourse, especially that presented by Labov in his studies of non-literary narrative; and suggests how recent developments in speech act theory and sociolinguistics correct previous theoretical deficiencies. The hypothesis emerges that a descriptive apparatus which can adequately account for non-literary uses of language will give a satisfactory account of literary discourse as well. An immensely important contribution to literary theory and linguistics.

Description: This volume analyzes academic exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as some of the states of Eastern Europe, from 1958 through 1975 in the framework of Soviet-American cultural relations and of the larger Soviet-American relationship. Academic exchanges with the Soviet Union, which began formally in 1958 and which continue under many of the principles then established, have increased our understanding of the Soviet Union and have created new relationships between our universities and our government. They have often provided the closest and most significant form of personal contact between American and Soviet citizens. They have also played an important political role, although they are called the "neglected aspect" of our foreign policy. They reveal the basic philosophies and policies that separate the two systems and the adversary character of Soviet-American relations.

Description: Rosemary Zumwalt examines the split between the literary folklorists and the anthropological folklorists during the period from 1888, when the American Folklore Society was founded, to the early 1940s, when control of the Journal of American Folklore by the anthropologists was ended. At the center of the conflict were concerns of professionalism, science, and academic discipline. For the literary folklorists, the orientation was toward literary works and the unwritten tradition from which they derived. Folklorists a·lso focused on the study of literary types or genres. Child and Kittredge studied the ballad; Thompson, the folktale; Taylor, the riddle and the proverb. In anthropology, study was directed toward cultures without writing, and the emphasis was on fieldwork. Boas in his own writings, and in training his students, stressed collection of every aspect of the life of a people. And part of that material collected was folklore. The literary folklorists looked at literary forms for folklore while the anthropological folklorists looked at the life of the people and saw folklore only as part of it. Although this discipline-bound focus of the two factions created friction and led the two groups in different directions, it helped shape the development of the discipline in the United States.

Description: Approaching linguistic science from the combined viewpoint of the philosophy of science and the theory of graphic design, this book offers a radically new treatment of linguistic theory and the history of linguistics. The author analyzes graphic representation, or diagramming, in terms of form and meaning, proposes a taxonomy of linguistic models that cuts across other classifications of linguistic theory, and shows that, like models in the biological and physical sciences, graphic representation has performed and continues to perform a heuristic function for the development of theory in linguistics. This view leads to a reinterpretation not only of the place and function of graphic representation in theoretical linguistics today but also of the history of linguistics. The book suggests new directions for models in linguistics: by making use of the tools furnished by the principles of graphic design, within the context of the principles of the philosophy of science, linguistics can exploit the influence of graphic representation on theory. This is illustrated by two new three-dimensional models for linguistics designed to replace the two principal models now current—the matrix and the tree—both two-dimensional. An analysis of the ways in which new models grow out of old ones and improve upon them demonstrates how graphic representation can furnish linguistics with models and how the design of such models can be improved by applying the principles of graphic design. The view presented here has particular significance for the development of transformational-generative theory.

Description: Probably in no other country has the marriage of folklore studies and nationalism produced such dramatic results as in Finland. The turning point in the struggle for independence was the intensifying nationalistic sentiment produced by the publication, in 1835, of Elias Lonnrot's Kalevala, an epic based on folk poetry. In the following decades a small band of Finnish scholar-patriots dug into Finnish folklore to forge a literary language, create a national culture, and reconstruct the prehistoric period of the nation's past independence. Folklore and Nationalism in Modern Finland traces the crucial impact of folklore studies on three periods in Finnish history: the era of Swedish and Russian rule; the tense decades between the winning of Finnish independence and the end of World War II; and the postwar period. By studying the increasingly propagandistic application of folklore by both the political right and left and by showing how respected folklore scholars allowed themselves to be swayed by political issues, Wilson raises important questions about the proper use of folklore—and indeed of all the humanities.

Since then, however, an explosion of research in the field has occurred, which this new revision accurately reflects. To a judicious selection from the old work Mr. Slobin has added 763 new items, standardizing the reference format and adding a unique computerized concordance. Leopold's Bibliography of Child Language is an invaluable reference work in child language study.

Description: With the death of Leonid Brezhnev in November 1982, the Soviet Union faces a critical period. What policies are its new leaders likely to follow? What are the principal strengths and weaknesses of the Soviet Union and how might they afect the uture conduct of Soviet leaders at home and abroad? A distinguished group of American specialists studies the Soviet system and Soviet society within a context of international politics, attempting to identify and explain the factors that are most likely to influence Soviet policy in the 1980s. The authors have drawn on the talents of thirty-five experts in seven disciplines to produce this essential volume. Policy makers, students, specialists, and the public will find here a coherent framework for understanding the future conduct of the Soviet Union.

Description: Originally published in 1953, Four Symposia on Folklore is a printed collection of transcribed tape recordings from the 1950 Midcentury International Folklore Conference at Indiana University. The collection is perhaps best described in the following excerpt from a 1954 review originally written by Richard M. Dorson for the Midwest Folklore journal: "Henceforth the loneliest folklorist starved for shoptalk can find congenial company at his elbow. … This enthralling volume offers information into important work being carried on in centers of interest from Sweden to Arizona, provides rich insights … and furnishes valuable suggestions for future lines of folkloristic endeavor. These data and ideas reach the reader … in a medium most ideally suited to the folklorist's craft, the spontaneous spoken word, seized on tape and transported to the printed page. As an heroic attempt to pool information and focus the scattered energies of folklore enthusiasts in this country … the Four Symposia constitutes a landmark in the history of American folklore studies."

Description: Alexander Pushkin's dazzling poetic masterpiece, Eugene Onegin (1823–1831), occupies a unique place in the history of Russian culture, regarded as the national epic as well as the cornerstone of the nineteenth-century Russian novel. Onegin is so central to Russian culture that generations of Russians have been on intimate terms with its characters, its form, and its flavor, and, from the time of its publication until the present, every important critical movement or literary theory has addressed it. Yet, because the poem's literary qualities are exceptionally difficult to convey in translation, Onegin is little known among non-Russians. This anthology, presenting in English the most influential nineteenth- and twentieth-century criticism devoted to Onegin, offers English-speaking readers an appreciation of the poem's hold on the Russian imagination while illuminating the history of Russian criticism itself.

Description: Pushkin: Death of a Poet is a careful appraisal of the available facts, casting doubt on many sidely circulated theories concerning Pushkin's death. Sifting the evidence from contemporary letters, diaries, and other sources, the author examines Pushkin's motives: his intense envy of his wife's popularity; his own social discomfort and failure; his humiliating obligation to the Tsar; his growing artistic sterility. He recreates the personalities of the central figures in the story and explores the tangled web of events which preceded the duel and the desperate last-minute efforts by friends of both Pushkin and d'Anthés to prevent their meeting. A vivid account of the duel itself and its tragic aftermath concludes this engrossing study of a perplexing chapter in literary history.

Description: The Structure of Intonational Meaning presents a linguistic study of English intonation, described in the original 1980 front flap as follows: "Using the data of English intonation, D. Robert Ladd, Jr., investigates the theoretical and methodological assumptions of past studies in the field. His impressive synthesis develops a new, comprehensive foundation for the study of English intonation in general. Ladd discusses a number of long-standing issues, including the relation of stress to intonation (and the associated questions of the phonological nature of sentence accent and the phonetic nature of stress), the various approaches to the placement of sentence accent, the phonological analysis of intonation contours into 'levels' or 'configurations', and the 'lexical' and 'syntactic' approaches to the meaning of intonation."

Description: The Ballad Matrix examines the William Motherwell ballad collection, one of the largest collections of songs gathered during the golden age of ballad collecting in Scotland (1780 to 1830). The collected repertoire of Agnes Lyle of Kilbarchan, Motherwell's most prolific informant, consists of twenty-two full texts, some with tunes, and a number of additional fragments. Revealing how Agnes Lyle relied on the narrative techniques of ballad singing, these songs also show how she achieved expression of personal values and concerns even though her medium, the ballad, was a highly traditional one. When in her ballads Agnes Lyle expressed traditional attitudes toward luxury, sexuality, or death, her expression was uniquely vehement. Furthermore, she was able to express radical social and political attitudes, which are not traditional in balladry. Study of Agnes Lyle's ballads thus allows a better understanding of what it meant for a traditional singer to "learn" a ballad and to what extent she was free to make the song her own.

Description: The elusive study of language change deals with discernible realia, such as sounds or structured groups of sounds, or words with their intra- and interrelationships. But these empirial data are constantly changing, and even interpreting them may be influenced by new linguistic circumstances. Description of language change has the advantage of hard evidence, but uncovering the reasons behind a set of language data is not a secure task. Language Change investigates the many facets of human activity that bear on this complex field. It relies on the polar areas of phonology, with its immediate alliance to physiology and physics, and semantics, with its penetration into the meaning of the world at large. Irmengard Rauch and Gerald F. Carr have organized teh volume in four sections—Contemporary Change, Historical Change, Linguists on Language Change, and Strata and Language Change—with almost half the chapters offering contemporary data. The distinguished contributors are Barbara Greim, Wayne Harbert, Henry and Renee KahaneI, Ilse Lehist, Winfred P. Lehmann, David Lightfoot, Yakov Malkiel, Raven McDavid Jr., Els Oksaar, Edgar Polome, Irmengard Rauch, and Frans VanCoetsem. Their range of topics reflects the kaleidoscopic essence of language change itself and will be of falue not only to linguists and semioticians but to historians, sociologists, philosophers, and anthropologists as well.

(1902) implies. Rather, Lenin and his rival, Alexander Bogdanov, struggled to persuade divided and fissiparous revolutionary exiles to accept their respective ideals of rigid party authority and Marxist orthodoxy, on the one hand, or collectivist and syndicalist manipulation of the masses, on the other.
