Description: This edited volume discusses multiple job holding as part of Finnish working life. The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers. According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims. This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.

Description: The present book contributes to the public administration literature by providing new insights into corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability initiatives, and stakeholder engagement in the higher education context. The fourteen papers published in this Special Issue discuss the role of public universities in promoting sustainability actions, university missions, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) embedded in the 2030 UN Agenda. In each contribution, avenues for research are suggested and, most importantly, stronger analytical connections are advocated between these inter-related research areas. In more detail, two papers focus their attention on university transparency and the processes’ complexity in public institutions. Furthermore, two papers focus on CSR teaching and education, three papers analyze universities’ social responsibility initiatives, and five papers focus on the SDGs. Lastly, taking into account how social networks have changed university communication and become powerful tools for building relationships with stakeholders, two papers of the Special Issue consider social media’s role in university communications.

Description: Nowadays, trust is an important determinant in the development of modern organizations. Not only is it becoming an increasingly important element of relationships between entities, but, above all, it positively influences the building of an organization's intellectual capital. This capital can be defined in different ways, but its definition always references elements that determine the potential of sustainable organizations, often in human, social, relational, organizational, and innovation dimensions. Trust is increasingly becoming the key determinant of this capital (Ko?uch, Lenart-Gansiniec, 2017). Trust also has a number of different definitions. However, the basis of many of these definitions is the building of relationships focused on developing some kind of individual or inter-organizational link. Organizational trust is a complicated concept, and it is the basis of all organized activities performed by people in the organization, largely because trust is needed to develop relationships with integrity and commitment. Thus, it is interesting to study the relationship between trust and the building of the intellectual capital of sustainable organizations. Indeed, intellectual capital plays a special role here. It is a guide and a platform for achieving not only a competitive advantage for the sustainable organization, but also a source of value creation in the short and long term. Thus, this strategic hybrid, composed of a business model, strategy, and business processes, is favorable to the development of intellectual capital (Jab?o?ski 2017). Trust is an element that ties this capital to relationships in business. Moreover, it has an integrated character (R.C. Mayer, J. H. Davis, F. D. Schoorman 1995). Assuming that, nowadays, the network paradigm is becoming increasingly important, it is worth asking how the mechanism of building trust-based intellectual capital in a sustainable organization functions as its key asset in the network environment.

Description: "This compilation introduces 14 articles that use method of empathy-based stories as a methodology and all of which look at changes in the field of education. This compilation discusses many current themes, such as changes in teaching and working methods at different levels of education, change management and curriculum work. The book also provides an insight into how children experience stories of news reports or how girls construct girlhood in their stories. All the articles in this compilation are combined with a review of educational change, along with a methodological connection: the material of all the articles is collected using the method of empathy-based stories. The book shows how multipurpose this method is: it is equally suitable for examining the perceptions of children as well as for examining a whole organizational change. The book presents not only the practical research carried out with the method, but also provides a guide to the methodology and introduces good practices. "
Description: "Aikamme kasvatus: vain muutos on pysyvää? Kaikkia edellä kuvattuja artikkeleita yhdistää kasvatuspainotteisen muutoksen tarkastelun ohella metodologinen yhteys: kaikkien artikkelien aineisto on kerätty eläytymismenetelmää käyttäen. Teos osoittaa, kuinka monikäyttöisestä menetelmästä on kyse: se sopii yhtälailla lasten käsitysten tutkimiseen kuin kokonaisen organisaatiomuutoksen tarkasteluun. Teos esittelee paitsi menetelmällä tehtyjä käytännön tutkimuksia, tarjoaa myös käyttöohjeen menetelmään vasta tutustuvalle tutkijalle. Teos esittelee eläytymismenetelmän hyviä käytäntöjä sekä systemaattisen kirjallisuushaun eläytymismenetelmän käytöstä. "

Description: Sustainability is an urgent developmental task for our society and is attracting increasing attention. Therefore, higher education institutions (HEIs) are also called upon to deal theoretically, conceptually, methodically, critically, and reflectively with the associated challenges and the processes and conditions of transformation in order to contribute to sustainable development. How can complex organisations such as HEIs succeed in initiating and maintaining the process of sustainable development within their own institutions and make it a permanent responsibility? How can as many protagonists as possible be persuaded to get involved in sustainable development? This book deals with the promotion of sustainable university development and provides an overview of how universities can be organised sustainably and how sustainable development can be implemented in their various functional areas. In the sense of a “whole-institution approach”, which encompasses entire HEIs, the focus is not only on the core areas of teaching (higher education for sustainable development) and research (sustainability in research) but, also, on the operational management of HEIs. In addition, this book focuses on sustainability governance and transfer for sustainable development at HEIs as cross-disciplinary issues.

Description: This book discusses disciplinary struggles in education from three perspectives. The chapters in the first section analyse the disciplinary character of educational practice and institutions. The second section focuses on justification of educational knowledge in transmission between theory and practice. The contributions of the third section problematise the aims and functions of educational practice and theory, which are critical for understanding the implications of disciplinary struggles in education for the future. Although the chapters focus on certain historical periods, forms and contexts of education, they provide insights, which are useful and relevant for a wider discussion in the eclectic and diverse theories and practices of education.
Description: "Kirja käsittelee kasvatuksen disiplinaarisia kiistoja kolmesta näkökulmasta.

Description: Higher education institutions (HEIs) have a unique role and responsibility for the future and for driving the development of a sustainable society. HEIs are charged with the task of fostering sustainability in the leaders of tomorrow, developing solutions and methods for addressing a sustainable future and ensuring that knowledge is contributed to society. HEIs must also ensure that their everyday operations and practices are consistent with a sustainable future, and that they work toward holistically integrating sustainability into both the mission of a university and its daily tasks. This Special Issue builds on papers presented during the 2018 International Sustainable Campus Network Conference and also includes other contributions. The articles reflect the many aspects of sustainability in higher education institutions and illustrate innovation in approach, outcomes, and impact. The papers cover a range of perspectives on sustainability both on and around campuses. These include organization and management issues, networking and city partnership themes, and metrics and indicators related to sustainable development goals. The Special Issue also includes papers on education, student involvement, and gender issues. Select articles include results from surveys and desktop research; others depict approaches on experimentation, living labs, and action research.

Description: "Tampere3 project, general knowledge, multicultural education, relocation of upper secondary school in a university campus, educational institution safety, wellbeing at work, successful recruitment process – these topics are discussed in eleven articles of this publication. The empirical data of these articles was collected during winter 2016-2017. Method of empathy based stories (MEBS) is a method for collecting qualitative data in which respondents write a story based on an orientation text, usually referred to as a frame story or a script. At least two different frame stories/scripts need to be formulated. MEBS data analysis is two-fold: firstly qualitative data analysis is based on the thematic framework of the research, furthermore the analysis imitates an empirical study and highlights the influence of the alteration of one factor in the frame story. MEBS has been utilized increasingly in various research fields in Finland since 1982. MEBS is in principle flexible and easy-to-use method, therefore it can be applied to explore a variety of research questions. The topics researched can be theoretically sophisticated and structured. They can be based on earlier research as well as to solve questions of more pragmatic nature. Despite the ostensible simplicity of using MEBS, many aspects need careful consideration and decisions need to be made especially in the data collection phase. So the last chapter of the publication concentrates on the formulation process of frame stories and data collection in an increasingly digitalized and diversified society. This publication is the first volume of the yearbook series introducing MEBS and research."
Description: "Tampere3-hanke, yleissivistys, maahanmuuttajien koulutus, lukion siirto yliopistokampukselle, oppilaitosturvallisuus, työhyvinvointi, onnistunut rekrytointiprosessi... Näitä kaikkia aiheita käsitellään teoksen 11 tutkimusartikkelissa, joiden empiirinen aineisto on kerätty eläytymismenetelmällä talvella 2016–2017. Eläytymismenetelmällä tarkoitetaan tiedonhankintamenetelmää, jossa vastaajat kirjoittavat kertomuksen tutkijan antaman, kehyskertomukseksi kutsutun orientaation perusteella. Kehyskertomuksia on aina vähintään kaksi erilaista ja aineisto analysoidaan kahteen kertaan: normaalina tutkimuksen tematiikasta kertovana laadullisena aineistona sekä kokeellisen tutkimuksen asetelmaa imitoiden ja pelkistäen sitä, mikä vastauksissa muuttuu, kun kehyskertomuksessa muutetaan yhtä keskeistä tekijää. Eläytymismenetelmää on käytetty eri tieteenaloilla yhä enenevissä määrin Suomessa vuodesta 1982 alkaen. "

Description: The use of renewable energies and energy saving and efficiency are needs of global society and universities. Universities have a large responsibility and social impact, as they are an example and engine of social change. Universities, in the European context, must be at the forefront of ESA processes, seeking to be at the same level as, and preferably higher than, the rest of society, seeking a goal of 20% renewable energy for 2020 and, in the longer term, greater energy efficiency based on a diverse use of renewable energy and studying the feasibility of other energy processes (cogeneration, trigeneration, etc.). The application of renewable energies and energy efficiency allow universities to make significant savings in their costs and contribute to sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Actions in pursuit of these goals in addition to the objective of energy saving should promote research and form an example for the university community. This book aims to advance the contribution of energy saving and the use of renewable energies in order to achieve more sustainable universities.

Description: As an interdisciplinary field of study, higher education research is still underdeveloped in terms of theoretical matureness and rigour. This book offers perspectives on how a range of methodological choices, theoretical approaches and conceptualisations from other disciplines can be successfully applied and utilised in the context of higher education. As a reader compiled of independent chapters, the book is particularly aimed at PhD students in the field of higher education administration. The book consists of three parts: I Methodological Approaches – examples for early career researchers; II Conceptual Approaches Utilised to Understanding University Transformation; and, III Scholarly Traditions Applied to Understand Universities and Academic Work. The first part highlights the importance of methods in research, and provides examples of academic dissertations with strong methodological groundings. In the second part, the authors provide theoretical and conceptual aids to analyse the transformation of higher education. The third part focuses on how traditional and well-established theoretical approaches can be applied to higher education settings in terms of, for example, research questions.

In Finland, most discussion on the welfare state's condition has focused on stabilizing the public-sector's finances. However, more essential for the future of the welfare state is its' social foundation, meaning people’s experiences of fairness, equality and reliability of the society as well as the welfare state's capability of taking care of the most vulnerable groups of people. A functional welfare state combines economic stability with the social foundation. However in the mid 2010s there are cracks in the social foundation of the welfare state . In this book the cracks of welfare state's social foundation are analysed from the perspective of dependency on social security. Especially the Finns' attitudes and political divisions, policies, the length of customership of last-resort social security, the functionality of service and income transfer systems, social segmentation created by breadlines and coping on the last-resort social security are observed. The book is meant for all interested in the condition and future of the welfare state. It is suitable as a textbook in universities and universities of applied sciences. The editor of the book, Juho Saari, is Professor in social and health policy at the University of Tampere and part-time Professor in welfare sociology at the University of Eastern Finland. He has also a docent at the University of Helsinki, at the University of Turku and at the University of Jyväskylä. "
Description: "Suurin osa hyvinvointivaltion tilasta käydystä yhteiskuntapoliittisesta keskustelusta on kohdentunut julkisen talouden vakauttamiseen. Kuitenkin keskeisempää hyvinvointivaltion tulevaisuudelle on sen sosiaalinen perusta, eli ihmisten kokemukset yhteiskunnan reiluudesta, tasa-arvoisuudesta ja luotettavuudesta sekä hyvinvointivaltion kyky kantaa vastuu kaikkein haavoittuvimmassa asemassa olevista ryhmistä. Toimiva hyvinvointivaltio sovittaa yhteen taloudellisen kestävyyden ja sosiaalisen perustan. Kuitenkin 2010-luvun puolivälin hyvinvointivaltion sosiaalisessa perustassa on halkeamia. Description: In a new era of global awareness and globalization, what’s happening around the world in real-time such as hurricanes, volcanic eruption, fires, drought, pollution, and other environmental and climate challenges are becoming increasingly more important and affect people’s lives. To meet these challenges, Earth observations from a new generation of satellites have now become available giving us unprecedented capabilities to monitor and study our planet. With global coverage twice daily for the next several decades, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometers on polar orbiting satellites provide rich and publically available data sets for a large number of land, atmosphere, and ocean applications, including the monitoring of aerosols, cloud properties, radiation budget, sea surface temperature, ocean color, active fire, albedo, snow and ice, vegetation, land use/land cover, night-lights from human activities, and natural disasters. Calibration and validation of these satellite observations are essential to ensure the quality, accuracy, precision, and stability of the data for the applications. This book will review recent advances in satellite optical sensor calibration and validation methodologies, algorithms, and techniques. Example calibration and validation of environmental data products are also discussed. It aims to serve all professionals, researchers, students, scientists alike in academics, industries, government, and beyond.

Description: In this reprint, we focus on health and wellbeing in the workforce within the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the post-pandemic era. We begin by exploring the impacts of the pandemic on diverse occupational groups, considering the broader mental health impacts of the pandemic, reactions to national lockdowns and behavioural strategies to control the spread of the virus, such as social distancing and self-isolation, attitudes towards infection control and work presenteeism. Next, we explore the relationship between job factors, working conditions and psychological wellbeing of employees. The papers that follow examine changes in work patterns and locations, such as remote, hybrid, and on-site working, the impact of organizational climate on mental wellbeing, and organizational approaches to return-to-work after lockdown. Finally, we present innovative organizational- and individual-level pandemic mitigation interventions, including SARS-CoV-2 testing services and infection control approaches, digital mental health support, and COVID-19 Vaccine Education. This collection demonstrates the breadth of research on work, health and wellbeing, during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, covering workforce impacts and workforce interventions in various countries and settings. Learning from this research will help to build global preparedness for future pandemics and foster resilience for responding in times of crisis and uncertainty.

Description: Social and the ecological welfare should be taken as the main aim of all politics. This is the message of this book titled The Enchantment of Social Policy. Basic social security system needs to be rebuilt and grounded on the universal basic income that everyone can top up by participating to the society in different ways. Universal basic income can be seen as a mean to recognize all valuable participation to for example voluntary work or care of elderly people. In conditions of high unemployment, this kind of universalistic social security would weaken the nexus between employment and welfare. It would promote a society and culture that is less dependent on the exploitation of natural resources. This book describes building blocks that are needed to reconstitute the enchantment of social policy – the utopian that we should collectively pursue.
Description: Sosiaalipolitiikan Lumon kirjoittajilla on viesti.

Description: The provision of affordable housing for low-income households is a very complex issue that has long been debated in many countries around the world. Social housing (SH) is one of the tools for achieving fairness, social sustainability, and economic feasibility, and it is interrelated with politics, ethics, and economics, as well as the environment, architecture, and technology. In other words, national and local policies, as well as public and private financial resources, are all needed to provide SH.SH also involves social and urban transformations and is, consequently, linked to urban planning and redevelopment projects, real estate market dynamics, and cooperation between public and private stakeholders. Furthermore, decision-making on SH policies and projects has to be supported by assessments of economic feasibility and social and environmental sustainability. This volume presents studies on various topics to recompose the multi-faceted subjects of social housing within a unified framework.

Description: The book called ”Inhimillinen ja tehokas sosiaali- ja terveysjohtaminen”(Humane and effective social- and health management) gathers together vital debate on social and health management and its needs both in current and future organisations. The perspectives presented in the book are networks, structures, interaction, professional expertise, couture of knowledge, meaningfulness of work, competence, diversity and experience. The book is edited by Antti Syväjärvi and Ville Pietiläinen.
