Daß dieser Gelehrte neben Lomonosov zu den Gründern der neueren russischen Literatur gehört, wird selten gebührend erwähnt. Diese Arbeit soll von ihm handeln, und besonders von einem Werk, das beinahe nicht zur Kenntnis genommen wird. Es soll eine gänzlich in Vergessenheit geratene Begegnung wieder ans Licht kommen: die Begegnung zwischen dem Autor Trediakovskij, dessen Rolle in der Literaturgeschichte unterschätzt wird, und einem Roman John Barclays, der "Argenis", dem in ganz Europa populärsten Roman des 17. Jahrhunderts. Hier wird eine Übersetzung Gegenstand sein; dennoch handelt es sich hier keineswegs um eine übersetzungskritische Arbeit. 〈/P〉

    Chapter 13 The social organization of (in-)attention (2023)

    Description: “Attention” is a primordial topic throughout Goffman’s work. Already his dissertation thesis (1953) includes a separate chapter on “the organization of attention”. In his later studies he developed various concepts related to attention, such as focused/unfocused interaction or “civil inattention”. Although attention is evidently a crucial dimension of the interactional order, Goffman did not elaborate this topic systematically. The study of attention was later refined and enriched by conversation analysts who underlined the role of visual displays of attentiveness in social interaction. Against the backdrop of the notion of “focused interaction”, this paper examines how the psychological approach to “joint attention” differs from or amplifies Goffman’s studies. Based on some of Cartier-Bresson’s photos, it is shown that the contrasting set of focused/unfocused interaction needs to be supplemented by a third type of attention order, in which members are collectively oriented to an outward event. After a discussion of some of the practices of sustaining and re-establishing a focus of attention, empirical evidence is provided that certain interactional purposes can be achieved by displaying inattention. In the final discussion of Goffman’s concept of “civil inattention”, some historical and sociological dimensions are pointed out along which this concept can be further studied.

    Chapter 9 From Conference to Community Interpreter Education (2021)

    Description: The aim of the chapter is to determine whether the current education of interpreters in the Republic of Slovenia responds to the needs of the society. In order to do that, the chapter first briefly outlines the development of the education of Slovene interpreters from its beginnings to the present. By drawing on the results of a nation-wide survey of language-support needs in Slovene healthcare institutions from 2016, which gathered responses of 564 healthcare workers, and on statistics of the Ministry of Interior Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia providing the countries of origin of applicants for international protection in Slovenia in the period between 2013 and 2019, the language needs on the contemporary Slovene society are outlined. These needs are then compared to the results provided by a nation-wide survey of interpreters and sworn interpreters from 2020 (n=123) focusing on language combinations they offer and identifying different settings in which they work. The results of this comparison show that there is a serious mismatch between the needs of the society and the existing language profiles of professional interpreters in the market, which results in the fact that ad-hoc interpreters are used for almost all the languages of newly arrived migrants with negative consequences for society at large. The chapter concludes with the description of educational efforts aimed at remedying the situation: first, a short specialisation program for sworn interpreters introduced in 2018, and second, the education of teachers of community interpreters for Albanian, Arabic and Persian which took place from 2019 to 2020.

Die Arbeit wurde mit dem «Förderpreis Sprache und Recht 2014 der Universität Regensburg», dem «Dissertationspreis 2014 der TU Dortmund» sowie dem «Peter-Lang-Nachwuchspreis – Geisteswissenschaften» ausgezeichnet.

    Description: Terminological consistency and accuracy are key indicators of institutional translation quality and a condition for semantic univocity and certainty with regard to legal terms translated at international organizations. They are accordingly important guiding principles in institutional terminology management. This chapter examines variations of consistency and accuracy levels in the translations of three selected terms that are representative of different degrees of legal asymmetry in English-Spanish translation, as well as the congruity of these translations with the recommendations found in the corresponding institutional terminological resources in three settings: the European Union, the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. The corpora compiled for diachronic comparison include all occurrences of the selected terms (“prima facie evidence,” “tort” and “magistrates’ court”) in two periods: 2005–2015 and 2016–2019. The findings suggest significant correlations between legal asymmetry and translation accuracy levels, and between intertextual consistency and accuracy fluctuations. They also reveal low adherence to the (limited) guidance of institutional terminological resources on legal system-specific terms. Additional qualitative insights are offered regarding the most significant cases of terminological harmonization and on the determining role of translation precedents.

    Description: This chapter studies the ways in which family members draw on their mediational repertoires to interact with one another near and far in the light of theories of translocality (Conradson & McKay 2007, Kytölä 2016), family discourse practices (Tannen et al. 2007) and language and emotions (Pavlenko 2004, Dewaele 2010). Through the analysis of digital power and connection manoeuvres (cf. Kendall 2006, Tannen 2006, Tannen et al. 2007) and morality practices (Ochs & Kremer-Sadlik 2007), the chapter shows how their interactional practices differ between local and transnational digital connectivity as well as between regular and occasional family contacts. The expressions of affection in these mediated interactions are examined to identify how they differ by the various types of local to global connectivity in the data and to conclude on how the diversity of linguistic repertoires becomes a resource to articulate emotions between adults, parents and their children.

They can (1) show self-reproach through evaluations, verbal marking of the exceptionality of their behaviour, or through bodily displays. They can also (2) lessen the reproach by conveying that there are also moments or aspects of their behaviour when they do not deviate from the norm. Sometimes, however, the patients (3) defy the reproach by showing joy or satisfaction with their impulsive behaviours. The three stance displays correspond to the three strategies of self-management of stigmatised persons discussed by Goffman. While Goffman discussed such strategies at the level of autobiographical time, conversation analysis demonstrates them in micro-interactional time.

    Description: The author of this thesis is aware that the above-mentioned contrastive studies deal extensively with the aspect and action type issues from their respective perspectives. Nevertheless, she has decided to take a stand on this topic herself. 1. The essay is a Germanic work that represents certain areas of the German language in contrast to Polish. 2. The aim of the work is a linguistic text analysis and not the description of the language systems. For the purposes of the essay, various texts have been selected and analyzed and described according to certain principles. Therefore, the results of the study are text corpus related. 3. The broad definition of aspectuality enables the comparison of different phenomena that are not only related to the verbal level but also take into account the contextual sentence and text levels. 4. Both translation directions Polish-German and German-Polish will be considered in the paper. Not only Polish, but also German original texts provide pertinent signals that need to be described and that can usually be found again in the translation.

Die Abhandlung ist eine germanistische Arbeit, die bestimmte Bereiche der deutschen Sprache im Kontrast zum Polnischen darstellt. 2. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist eine linguistische Textanalyse und nicht die Beschreibung der Sprachsysteme. Für die Zwecke der Abhandlung wurden verschiedene Texte ausgewählt und nach bestimmten Prinzipien analysiert und beschrieben. Von daher sind die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung textkorpusbezogen. 3. Die breite Definition der Aspektualität ermöglicht den Vergleich verschiedener Phänomene, die sich nicht nur auf die verbale Ebene beziehen, sondern auch die kontextuelle Satz- und Textebene berücksichtigen. 4. Beide Übersetzungsrichtungen Polnisch-Deutsch und Deutsch-Polnisch werden in der Abhandlung berücksichtigt. Nicht nur polnische, sondern auch deutsche Originaltexte liefern nämlich aspektuelle Signale, die es zu beschreiben gilt und die in der Regel auch in der Übersetzung wieder zu finden sind.

    Description: Terminological consistency and accuracy are key indicators of institutional translation quality and a condition for semantic univocity and certainty with regard to legal terms translated at international organizations. They are accordingly important guiding principles in institutional terminology management. This chapter examines variations of consistency and accuracy levels in the translations of three selected terms that are representative of different degrees of legal asymmetry in English-Spanish translation, as well as the congruity of these translations with the recommendations found in the corresponding institutional terminological resources in three settings: the European Union, the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. The corpora compiled for diachronic comparison include all occurrences of the selected terms (“prima facie evidence,” “tort” and “magistrates’ court”) in two periods: 2005–2015 and 2016–2019. The findings suggest significant correlations between legal asymmetry and translation accuracy levels, and between intertextual consistency and accuracy fluctuations. They also reveal low adherence to the (limited) guidance of institutional terminological resources on legal system-specific terms. Additional qualitative insights are offered regarding the most significant cases of terminological harmonization and on the determining role of translation precedents.

Ziel der Analyse des terminologischen Inventars in den russischen Übertragungen der Latein-Grammatiken Bröders ist eine Charakterisierung des Entwicklungsstandes der russischen grammatischen Terminologie in der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts.

    Description: N.M. Karamzin's "Pis'ma russkogo putešestvennika" (hereinafter PRP) occupy a special place in the history of Russian language and literature. Since their publication as a continuation novel in "Moskovskiy Žurnal" from 1791-1792 (in the following MŽ 1) they are considered both the first realization of the "novyj slog" (new language / new style) as well as the beginning of Russian sentimentalism. Both assumptions are controversial. The present work should contribute to the clarification of contentious questions by providing a detailed description of the syntactic facts in the main work of Karamzin for the first time.

    Description: The present study is a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the system of long and short adjectives in Old Russian, a profound language change to which very little previous research has been devoted. It is generally assumed that in prehistoric Slavic, the system was purely grammatical with the long form denoting definiteness and the short form denoting indefiniteness. The present study finds, on the basis of evidence collected from Old Russian chronicle texts, that even the earliest of these sources display a substantially transformed system no longer reflecting the opposition between definiteness and indefiniteness, but governed by parameters of information structure.

    Description: This monograph is a translation of two seminal works on corpus-based studies of Mandarin Chinese words and parts of speech. The original books were published as two pioneering technical reports by Chinese Knowledge and Information Processing group (CKIP) at Academia Sinica in 1993 and 1996, respectively. Since then, the standard and PoS tagset proposed in the CKIP report have become the de facto standard in Chinese corpora and computational linguistics, in particular in the context of traditional Chinese texts.     Description: The texts compiled in Coptica Palatina were worked on by young scholars taking part in an International Summer School for Coptic Papyrology under the supervision of the editors. The volume offers editions of Coptic literary and magical texts, of private letters, as well as of legal and administrative documents, all complete with a commentary and a modern translation. These texts originate from different regions of Middle and Upper Egypt (Fayyum, Hermupolis, Bawit, Aphrodito, Esna, Apollonopolis magna) and are datable to the 6th/7th up to the 11th/12th centuries CE. The bulk of the material, however, comes from the 7th/8th century, the crucial period of Egypt’s transition from a province of the Byzantine empire to a province of the early Islamic caliphate.

    Description: Translation history and literary translation, on the one hand, and periodical publications, on the other, have been extensively analysed within the fields of translation studies, comparative literature, and media studies, with numerous conferences and publications taking literary translation and the periodical as objects of enquiry. However, the relationship between both fields still remains underexplored and nationalistic approaches and disciplinary boundaries have precluded the development of further conceptual and methodological insights regarding literary translation and the media. This chapter highlights the innovative theoretical and methodological issues intrinsic to analysing literary translation in periodical publications at both small and large scales, whether using or not digital tools, and sheds light on its qualitative implications for research. To do so, we briefly present a case study related to the Spanish-speaking world’s literary journals at the beginning of the twentieth century.

    Description: The concerns not only of the Slavic minorities are gaining in significance with the forthcoming eastward enlargement of the European Union. The Russians or Ruthenians are a Slavic ethnic group, which is mainly located in the Carpathian region as a border area between Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine, an excellent example of this, as their culture and language not only in a historical and religious, but also developed in a linguistic border or transition area. Only at the turn of the last century did they succeed in gaining greater attention for their language and culture. In the course of the last century, the development of their language has fluctuated regionally between oppression and normalization / codification. This was accompanied by the weakening or strengthening of Russian identity, which experienced an unexpected boom at the end of the 20th century after the end of the communist regime.
    Description: Die Anliegen nicht nur der slavischen Minderheiten gewinnen mit der bevorstehenden Osterweiterung der Europäischen Union an Bedeutung. Die Russinen oder Ruthenen sind als slavische Volksgruppe,die vor allem im Karpatenraum als Grenzgebiet zwischen Polen, Ungarn, der Slowakei und der Ukraine beheimatet ist, ein hervorragendes Beispiel dafür, da sich ihre Kultur und Sprache nicht nur in einem historischen und religiösen, sondern auch in einem sprachlichen Grenz- bzw. Übergangsgebiet entwickelt hat. Erst um die vorletzte Jahrhundertwende gelang es ihnen, ihrer Sprache und Kultur größere Aufmerksamkeit zu verschaffen. Im Laufe des letzten Jahrhunderts schwankte die Entfaltung ihrer Sprache regional zwischen Unterdrückung und Normierung/Kodifizierung. Damit einher ging die Schwächung bzw. Stärkung russinischer Identität, die am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts nach dem Ende der kommunistischen Regime eine unerwartete Blüte erlebte.

    Description: This chapter extends some of the observations that Goffman made on a class of vocalisations he called ‘response cries’ (1978) to the domain of the multi-modal by examining an embodied practice in English interaction: a particular facial expression that 1) has particular compositional features and 2) occurs in a particular sequential position. Compositionally, this expression consists of raised eyebrows and pursed lips; sequentially, it is produced in response to a claim made by a co-participant. Instances from both institutional and mundane interaction are examined here. These show participants may or may not be gazing at their co-participant; the expression is not necessarily designed to get uptake. In this respect, this facial expression resembles Goffman’s ‘response cries’ in being produced in the presence of others, but not necessarily designed to get responses from those others. Response relevance is seen to be shaped as much by sequential position as features of composition. This facial expression is shown, when analysed in its sequential environment, to constitute an embodied display of scepticism.

Their characteristic is the shift from (love) semantics to a specific (love) rhetoric. Love discourses in the textual presentation are no longer constituted through the traditional narration of love stories or stories about love, but through a practice of love-speech. As a result, language no longer functions as a means of description, but itself becomes the object of description and reflection. Examining this phenomenon in conjunction with the theme of love discourses is the main interest of the work.
    Description: Liebesdiskurse, so die Grundthese der Arbeit, figurieren in Narbikovas Texten als textkonstituierend. Deren Charakteristikum ist die Verschiebung von (Liebes-)Semantik hin zu einer spezifischen (Liebes-)Rhetorik. Liebesdiskurse werden in der textuellen Darstellung nicht mehr über das traditionelle Erzählen von Liebesgeschichten bzw. Geschichten über die Liebe konstituiert, sondern durch eine Praxis des Liebe-Sprechens.
