    Description: The „Flecken Adelebsen“ at the edge of the „Solling“ in southern Lower-Saxony looks back to 300 years of jewish history. In 19th century it was named “Little Jerusalem” because of the high number of jewish habitants. Today only the jewish graveyard has outlived. The aim of this documentation is to tap this “House of Living” as a new historical resource and do a part of an outstanding and necessary mourning work.

    Description: This study reveals that in medieval Dutch vernacular texts (from the Brabantine authors Jan van Boendale, Lodewijk van Velthem, and Jan van Leeuwen, and in the anonymous Boek van Sidrac) the treatment of individual and universal eschatological topics and themes, such as death, heaven, hell, purgatory, the Antichrist, eschatological people, and Judgement Day is dedicated to moral and ethical guidance to prepare oneself during lifetime for the afterlife. Central to all texts is the fate of the souls in the afterlife and guidelines to assure redemption on Judgment Day. This includes the ability to recognize the signs of the End properly. The vernacular eschatological discourse is considered as an inherent part of the intellectual emancipation of the laity in the later Middle Ages. This book is of interest not only to Dutch and German philologists, but also to historians and anyone interested in the history of religion, especially of eschatology and apocalypticism. This study was awarded with the 2013 Mgr. C. de Clercqprijs of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten (Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts) for an outstanding work in the field 'History of Religions of Flanders'.

    Description: Vivir en la periferia del sistema no siempre representó una desventaja. El judaísmo de Europa central a fines del siglo XIX e inicios del XX fue uno de los polos culturales más creativos de los tiempos modernos. El problema del judaísmo en América Latina reside en que es doblemente pe-riférico, además de ser de otra época. Al estar localizado en países capitalistas "emergentes", es decir, alejados de la cola pero, todavía, lejos de la cabeza y con comunidades de baja densidad demográfica y cultural y en un ambiente relativamente poco hostil - lo que disminuye las fuerzas centrífugas -, enfrenta el desafío de individualizarse en un universo globalizado en donde los espacios locales son permanentemente colonizados por el mundo exterior.

    Description: Este texto es un esfuerzo de actualizar el judaísmo secular y humanista, que en los tiempos modernos orientó a los mayores pensadores, científicos, artistas y activistas judíos, de Spinoza a Hanna Arendt, de Freud a Einstein, de Gershwin a Chagall, de Kafka a Roth, de Theodor Hertzl a Emma Goldman, de Isaac Deutscher a Amos Oz, así como a la gran mayoría de sus premios Nobel. Judíos, que no invocaban libros sagrados o mandamientos divinos para afirmar una identidad judaica, que se nutrieron de la historia y de la cultura judía, de sus dramas psíquicos y existenciales, de lazos particulares de solidaridad cuando los judíos son perseguidos, como de revuelta cuando los judíos actúan sin sensibilidad frente al sufrimiento de los otros.

    Description: The book "Synagogues in Göttingen: departures and ceasing of Jewish life," deals with the 700-year history of Jewish life in Göttingen and the various synagogues that have been existing since the beginning of the 14th Century.
    Description: Das Buch »Synagogen in Göttingen: Aufbrüche und Abbrüche jüdischen Lebens« behandelt die 700 Jahre währende Geschichte des jüdischen Lebens in Göttingen und der verschiedenen Synagogen, die sich seit Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts nachweisen lassen. Es beschäftigt sich zunächst mit der ersten urkundlichen Erwähnung eines jüdischen Bürgers aus dem Jahre 1289 und der »Synagoga Judaeorum«, die bis zur Judenverfolgung um 1350 in der Jüdenstraße bestand. Das zweite Kapitel befasst sich mit der »Judenschule« in der Speckstraße, die bis zum zweiten Abbruch jüdischen Lebens Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts für Gottesdienste genutzt wurde. Das dritte Kapitel widmet sich der Judenpolitik der damaligen Braunschweiger Herzöge sowie der Entstehung des jüdischen »Tempels« in einem Hinterhaus der Buchstraße (heute Prinzenstraße) zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die folgenden Kapitel beschreiben die Entstehung und spätere Erweiterung der neuen Synagoge an den Maschstraßen, die von 1872 bis 1938 den jüdischen Göttinger Bürgern als Gotteshaus diente. Das Buch berichtet im Folgenden von der Schändung und Zerstörung der Synagoge in der so genannten Reichskristallnacht am 9. November 1938. Im letzten Kapitel beschreibt der Autor den Neubeginn der jüdischen Gemeinde in Göttingen »im Schatten der Schoah« und den Aufbau einer neuen (alten) Synagoge neben dem jüdischen Gemeindezentrum in der Angerstraße.

    Description: De há muito se impunha a reunião em volume do conjunto de textos que, nas décadas de 50 e 60, Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira dedicou ao estudo etnográfico das festividades cíclicas portuguesas. E isto por duas ordens de razões: primeiro, por serem fundamentais para a compreensão de um mundo até há pouco fechado no sistema da sua ruralidade e que aos poucos se vai irreversivelmente desvanecendo (mas que é indispensável conhecer para se compreender cabalmente o presente); segundo, porque possuem o interesse de mostrar algumas das linhas de força a que obedeceu a investigação etnológica em Portugal no tempo em que se iniciou entre nós a sua reformulação como matéria de uma ciência organizada. Ao publicar o presente livro, a colecção “Portugal de Perto” coloca assim ao alcance do público um trabalho fundamental da etnografia portuguesa, ao mesmo tempo que recebe entre os seus autores um dos nomes que mais contribuíram para a sua maioridade como ciência: Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira.

Apesar de os judeus terem um papel importante na construção de movimentos políticos e ideológicos, na vida econômica e científica do Brasil, são pouquíssimos os trabalhos que procuraram compreender os processos socioculturais de formação e transformação da comunidade judaica no Brasil.

    Description: Das Buch »Synagogen in Göttingen: Aufbrüche und Abbrüche jüdischen Lebens« behandelt die 700 Jahre währende Geschichte des jüdischen Lebens in Göttingen und der verschiedenen Synagogen, die sich seit Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts nachweisen lassen. Es beschäftigt sich zunächst mit der ersten urkundlichen Erwähnung eines jüdischen Bürgers aus dem Jahre 1289 und der »Synagoga Judaeorum«, die bis zur Judenverfolgung um 1350 in der Jüdenstraße bestand. Das zweite Kapitel befasst sich mit der »Judenschule« in der Speckstraße, die bis zum zweiten Abbruch jüdischen Lebens Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts für Gottesdienste genutzt wurde. Das dritte Kapitel widmet sich der Judenpolitik der damaligen Braunschweiger Herzöge sowie der Entstehung des jüdischen »Tempels« in einem Hinterhaus der Buchstraße (heute Prinzenstraße) zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die folgenden Kapitel beschreiben die Entstehung und spätere Erweiterung der neuen Synagoge an den Maschstraßen, die von 1872 bis 1938 den jüdischen Göttinger Bürgern als Gotteshaus diente. Das Buch berichtet im Folgenden von der Schändung und Zerstörung der Synagoge in der so genannten Reichskristallnacht am 9. November 1938. Im letzten Kapitel beschreibt der Autor den Neubeginn der jüdischen Gemeinde in Göttingen »im Schatten der Schoah« und den Aufbau einer neuen (alten) Synagoge neben dem jüdischen Gemeindezentrum in der Angerstraße. Dies ist die 2., überarbeitete und ergänzte Auflage.
