    Description: After 1945, new methods and tools for forecasting the future grew out of the dynamic developments that were taking place in science and technology. Conceptions of futures research or futures studies as approaches to forecasting, planning and envisaging the future grew out of transnational circulations of knowledge in the 1950s and 1960s. The futures field was epitomized by the perception of many possible futures to be forecast and shaped. However, during the 1970s, the limits of envisioning the future became increasingly evident. This book as the first comprehensive study on the topic focuses on the futures field in Western industrialized countries – particularly the USA and West Germany – but also takes the socialist states and global networks into its ambit.

    Description: Migrations and population dynamics are considered very problematic topics in the fields of ancient studies. Recent scholarship in (pre)historical population has generated new impulses by using scientific approaches using radiogenic and stable isotopes, and palaeogenetics, as well as computer simulation. As a result, the state of migration research has undergone rapid change. Several research groups presented papers at aconference held in Berlin in 2010, addressing specific historical aspects of population dynamics and migration, with no chronological or geographical restrictions, in the light of cutting-edge bio-archaeological research. This volume, divided into three larger thematic sections (isotope analysis, population genetics, and modelling and computer simulation), presents experiences and insights about methodological approaches, research results and prospects for future research in this area in a varied collection of papers.     Description: Der Straßburger Jakobinerclub wurde im Januar 1790 gegründet und im September 1795 per Konventsdekret aufgelöst. Trotz seiner Lage an der Peripherie Frankreichs beschritt auch er den tragischen Weg, der Frankreich von der Revolution für Freiheit und Menschenrechte in die blutige Diktatur führte. Unter den spezifischen kulturellen Bedingungen des Elsaß - geprägt durch Grenzlage, Bikonfessionalität und Bilingualismus - hatte der revolutionäre Prozess dort allerdings ein ganz eigenes Gesicht. Während die enthusiastische Anfangszeit von kultureller Toleranz und Kosmopolitismus geprägt war, bildete sich nach und nach eine auf Einheitlichkeit ausgerichtete Ideologie, die mit Xenophobie, Religions- und in Ansätzen auch Sprachterror einherging. François Furet hat die Genese der Terreur durch verhängnisvolle ideologische Kontinuitäten von 1789 bis 1794 erklärt. Das vorliegende Buch greift diese These kritisch auf und zeigt zum einen, dass es neben Kontinuitäten auch nicht zu vernachlässigende Wandlungsprozesse in der revolutionären Ideologie gab, zum anderen, dass die Triebkräfte derselben in lokalen politischen und soziokulturellen Konflikten zu suchen sind.

    Description: Als Nicolas Fouquet 1661 über Nacht vom obersten Finanzminister zum ersten Staatsgefangenen wurde, stürzte nicht nur einer der mächtigsten Politiker des Landes, sondern auch der innovativste Mäzen des Grand Siècle. Wie kein anderer hatte es Fouquet verstanden, seine Kunstförderung in den Dienst seiner politischen Karriere zu stellen. Nach dem Sturz Fouquets übernahm Ludwig XIV. nicht nur die Bauherren, Künstler und Poeten seines Finanzministers, sondern auch das in der Schlossanlage Vaux-le-Vicomte verwirklichte Konzept der politischen Selbstinszenierung. Die von Nicolas Fouquet zwischen 1653 und 1661 entwickelte Form der Selbstdarstellung beeinflusste auf diese Weise Frankreich und Europa nachhaltig. Christine Howald stellt das künstlerische Gesamtkonzept von Vaux-le-Vicomte ins Zentrum ihres Buches. Aus diesem Blickwinkel zeichnet die Autorin erstmals das enge Zusammenspiel von Fouquets Mäzenatentum und seiner politischen Laufbahn im Detail nach.

Der zeitliche Rahmen der behandelten Themen reicht von den Heiligen Kriegen des antiken Judentums bis zum Weltanschauungskrieg Hitlers, den dieser im Namen der Vorsehung und des Allmächtigen führen wollte. Bemerkenswert bleibt, dass auch der moderne, um das Seelenheil seiner Untertanen entlastete Staat, wenn es um Krieg und Frieden ging, auf die sinn- und legitimationsstiftende Macht religiöser Deutungen nicht verzichten wollte.

Der Diplomat war mit allen Fragen der internationalen Politik der Zwischenkriegszeit konfrontiert: Sollten Deutschland die Reparationen erlassen und eine Aufrüstung erlaubt werden? Wie sollte auf Reichskanzler Hitler reagiert werden? Sollte mit ihm die Zusammenarbeit oder die Auseinandersetzung gesucht werden? Sollten seine Vertragsbrüche mit politischen und/oder wirtschaftlichen Sanktionen beantwortet oder gar zu einer Intervention geschritten werden? Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt die unterschiedlichen Antworten, die André François-Poncet auf diese Fragen gab. Sie waren keineswegs so eindeutig wie der Botschafter nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und auch die bisherige Forschung glauben machen wollten. André François-Poncet schwankte bis zu seinem Rücktritt nach der Konferenz von München zwischen Kooperation und Konfrontation mit Deutschland. Wann er warum wofür plädierte, zeigt die Studie, die die erste Lebenshälfte des legendären Botschafters aus dem Dunkel der Geschichte holt.

Die Auswertung bisher unedierter Quellen, v.a. der Predigten Clemens VI., zeigt die Art und Weise, wie der Papst von Avignon aus Einfluss auf das politische Geschehen in ganz Europa auszuüben versuchte. Neben dem Einblick in die spätmittelalterliche Politik ergibt sich daraus ein neues Bild Clemens VI., der sich keineswegs als so schwach und verderbt erweist, wie in der Forschung bisher angenommen wurde. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Friedrich-Meinecke-Preis der Freien Universität Berlin 2003 für eine hervorragende Dissertation im Bereich Geschichte und Kulturwissenschaften.

He lost nearly all his public offices and posts, yet as a publicist Heuss continued to defend his liberal convictions. We encounter a member of the educated middle classes who attempted to carve out space for himself in a hostile political environment. These 194 selected letters, most of them previously unknown, reflect his gripping biography and the dramatic course of events from the handing over of power to the National Socialists in January 1933 to the end of the war in 1945.

    Description: The late medieval German trade with the North Atlantic islands, in the margins of the Hanseatic trade network, has received only limited scholarly attention. Merchants from predominantly Hamburg and Bremen established direct trade relations with these islands in the late 15th century, and managed to control the international trade with Iceland, the Faroes and Shetland for much of the 16th century. However, the Hanseatic commercial infrastructure was absent in the North Atlantic, which forced these merchants to develop new trade strategies. Besides a critical re-evaluation of the economic and political conditions, this volume offers a comprehensive study of the organisation of the trade and the methods used to establish and maintain networks between islanders and German merchants. Moreover, it analyses the role and socio-economic position of the communities of merchants with the North Atlantic in their home towns. The book shows that the North Atlantic trade was anything but insignificant. It was a dynamic and integral part of the trade network of the northern German cities, and its study is highly relevant for the economic history of Northern Europe.

    Description: Besatzung, Bürgerkrieg und Revolution sind Ereignisse, die Gesellschaften besonders nachhaltig mental, politisch und sozial spalten. Dementsprechend schwierig ist auch ihre Verarbeitung. Aus der Fülle der relevanten Aspekte wird hier jener des Vergangenheitsdiskurses untersucht: Gilt das antike Gebot des Verschweigens und Vergebens oder wurde von der Vergangenheit gesprochen? Gibt es dabei bezeichnende Unterschiede zwischen unterschiedlichen Gruppen der Gesellschaft? Inwiefern trägt die Art dieser Auseinandersetzung, also die spezifische Erinnerungskultur, zur inneren Aussöhnung oder aber zur andauernden Spaltung der Gesellschaft bei? Schließlich wird die kurzfristige Vergegenwärtigung des Vergangenen von jener mit größerem historischen Abstand zu den Ereignissen unterschieden und damit die Beharrung oder der Wandel unterschiedlicher Erinnerungskulturen analysiert. Die Fallbeispiele stammen aus verschiedenen historischen Epochen vom ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert bis in die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts; sie berücksichtigen neben West- und Mitteleuropa auch den östlichen Teil des Kontinents und verdeutlichen damit die räumlich-zeitlich-kulturelle Kontextabhängigkeit von Vergangenheitsdiskursen. Dabei erweist sich, dass Vergeben und Vergessen spätestens seit 1789 nicht mehr funktionieren: In modernen pluralistischeren Gesellschaften lässt sich Erinnerung allenfalls noch vorübergehend steuern. Letztlich bleibt die ebenso schwierige wie belastende und nie gänzlich befriedigende Gratwanderung zwischen notwendigem Erinnern und legitimem Vergessen unvermeidlich.

Dominik Geppert beschäftigt sich mit den bislang von der Forschung vernachlässigten Jahren Thatchers als Oppositionsführerin im britischen Unterhaus, beginnend mit ihrer überraschenden Wahl zur konservativen Parteichefin im Februar 1975 bis zum Amtsantritt als Premierministerin im Mai 1979. Dies waren nicht nur die Prägejahre der Politikerin, sondern zugleich die formative Phase jenes politischen und weltanschaulichen Phänomens, dem sie ihren Namen gegeben hat. Geppert analysiert die Entstehungsjahre des Thatcherismus vor dem Hintergrund der sich zuspitzenden politisch-ökonomischen Krise Großbritanniens, dem Aufstieg des wirtschaftsliberalen Paradigmas und der britischen "Neuen Rechten".
