    Description: It is now recognized that emotions have a history. In this book, eleven scholars examine a variety of emotions in ancient China and classical Greece, in their historical and social context. A general introduction presents the major issues in the analysis of emotions across cultures and over time in a given tradition. Subsequent chapters consider how specific emotions evolve and change. For example, whereas for early Chinese thinkers, worry was a moral defect, it was later celebrated as a sign that one took responsibility for things. In ancient Greece, hope did not always focus on a positive outcome, and in this respect differed from what we call “hope.” Daring not to do, or “undaring,” was itself an emotional value in early China. While Aristotle regarded the inability to feel anger as servile, the Roman Stoic Seneca rejected anger entirely. Hatred and revenge were encouraged at one moment in China and repressed at another. Ancient Greek responses to tragedy do not map directly onto modern emotional registers, and yet are similar to classical Chinese and Indian descriptions. There are differences in the very way emotions are conceived. This book will speak to anyone interested in the many ways that human beings feel.

Insbesondere Deutschen fällt aufgrund ihrer ganz anders gearteten Art und Weise des Umgangs und Sprechens auf, dass man in unserem Nachbarland neben der Beherrschung der Sprache insbesondere die Kunst des Impliziten beherrschen muss, um ins Gespräch zu kommen. Nachgegangen wird der Frage, in welcher Zeit und aus welchen Gründen sich die indirekte Kommunikation in Frankreich als Habitus herausgebildet und verfestigt hat. Gezeigt wird, wie die Literatur über die Kunst des Impliziten nachdenkt und welche Rolle diese Kunst in der kulturellen Ausnahmestellung (‚exception culturelle‘) Frankreichs in Europa einnimmt, die das Land sich seit Jahrhunderten zugute hält. Anhand von herausragenden Beispielen der französischen Literatur vom 16. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert werden die Reflexionen über die indirekte Form des Sprechen analysiert. Das Buch ist aus einer mehrfach gehaltenen Vorlesung zur Frage der Interkulturalität in der deutsch-französischen Begegnung hervorgegangen. Es gehört in die Rubrik einer interkulturellen Literaturgeschichte.

Mohammed ben Abdelkrim el Khattabi alias Abdelkrim schaffte es, die zerstrittenen Rifkabylen zu vereinen und aus der Widerstandsbewegung gegen die spanischen Invasoren die 1923 proklamierte "Rif-Republik" erwachsen zu lassen. Dirk Sasse geht den deutschen, britischen und französischen Helfern Abdelkrims nach – Ärzten, Technikern usw. –, die zu einer schleichenden Verlängerung des Krieges beitrugen, aber auch bei der vorgesehenen Modernisierung des Landes mithelfen sollten. Sein Buch ist ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Dekolonisation und zur Geschichte der Vernetzung zwischen der außereuropäischen Bevölkerung und antikolonial eingestellten Sympathisanten in Europa.

    Dynamics of Architecture in Late Baroque Rome. Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni at the Cancelleria (2021)

    Description: This is the first study to characterize the architectural patronage of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (1667-1740), and to identify twelve architects during his half century of patronage in his Ecclesiastical court of the Cancelleria. Most eminent among them were Filippo Juvarra and Domenico Gregorini. Commercial and private theaters in the palace are located from archival data, room measurements, drawings, diary accounts, Correspondence of the French Academy, and palimpsests of architectural details. The size, shape, appearance, capacity, and location of Filippo Juvarra's theater are discussed. Archival documents are cited to reveal why, how, and when it vanished. Detailed analysis is devoted to Juvarra's stage construction with its elaborate sets and moving apparatus. In his official function as Vice-Chancellor of the Church, it is well known that Ottoboni was positioned as a major patron of music, theater, and painting in late Baroque Rome. He was a librettist for oratorios performed by his resident composer, Arcangelo Corelli, and by Alessandro Scarlatti in venues in the palace, and in his basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso, located in the palace grounds. His resident painters included Francesco Trevisani and Sebastiano Conca. He completed the construction of Bernini's Confessione in the nave of his basilica. As the sponsor of the Arcadian Academy, Ottoboni dictated taste in Roman cultural circles. His involvement in the competition for the façade of St. John Lateran is amplified. A grand overview is provided for the cardinal's commission of devotional machine constructed to rival the Lenten carnivals. Unter ‚Applikation‘ ist eine Tätigkeit im Rahmen des Rezeptionsprozesses zu verstehen, bei welcher Leser/-innen das Gelesene auf ihre persönlichen oder lebensweltlichen Erfahrungen, Überzeugungen und Einstellungen beziehen. Das Ergebnis dieser Bezugnahme, welches ebenfalls ‚Applikation‘ heißt, kann sein, dass sie neue Überzeugungen und Einstellungen bilden, bestehende verändern oder verwerfen. Um Existenz, Beschaffenheit und Relevanz des Phänomens zu belegen, wurde eine Fülle an Rezeptionsdokumenten ausgewertet. Sie geben Auskunft über die Erstrezeption von neun Romanen aus vier Jahrhunderten, die das literarische Korpus der Arbeit bilden, darunter Goethes Werther, Manns Buddenbrooks und Schlinks Der Vorleser.     Description: This open access State-of-the-Art Survey presents the main recent scientific outcomes in the area of reversible computation, focusing on those that have emerged during COST Action IC1405 "Reversible Computation - Extending Horizons of Computing", a European research network that operated from May 2015 to April 2019. Reversible computation is a new paradigm that extends the traditional forwards-only mode of computation with the ability to execute in reverse, so that computation can run backwards as easily and naturally as forwards. It aims to deliver novel computing devices and software, and to enhance existing systems by equipping them with reversibility. There are many potential applications of reversible computation, including languages and software tools for reliable and recovery-oriented distributed systems and revolutionary reversible logic gates and circuits, but they can only be realized and have lasting effect if conceptual and firm theoretical foundations are established first.

    Description: Das am 27. Februar 1953 unterzeichnete Londoner Schuldenabkommen stellte ein Novum in der Geschichte der internationalen Schuldenregelung dar. Mit ihm wurde die gigantische deutsche Auslandsverschuldung des privaten und öffentlichen Sektors aus der Vor- und Nachkriegszeit geregelt. Als Rechtsnachfolgerin des Deutschen Reiches übernahm die Bundesrepublik die Haftung für die gesamten Vorkriegsschulden des ehemaligen Reichs. Die langwierigen und von zahlreichen Schwierigkeiten durchzogenen Verhandlungen erreichten, dass das Schuldenabkommen dem tatsächlichen Leistungsvermögen der Bundesrepublik angepasst wurde. Mit dem Londoner Schuldenabkommen wurde die Kreditwürdigkeit der jungen Bundesrepublik wiederhergestellt; es war damit eine Conditio sine qua non für die Wiedergewinnung der Souveränität der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

    Description: This Open Access book presents the results of the "Collaborative Embedded Systems" (CrESt) project, aimed at adapting and complementing the methodology underlying modeling techniques developed to cope with the challenges of the dynamic structures of collaborative embedded systems (CESs) based on the SPES development methodology. In order to manage the high complexity of the individual systems and the dynamically formed interaction structures at runtime, advanced and powerful development methods are required that extend the current state of the art in the development of embedded systems and cyber-physical systems. The methodological contributions of the project support the effective and efficient development of CESs in dynamic and uncertain contexts, with special emphasis on the reliability and variability of individual systems and the creation of networks of such systems at runtime. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and the case studies are therefore selected from areas that are highly relevant for Germany’s economy (automotive, industrial production, power generation, and robotics). It also supports the digitalization of complex and transformable industrial plants in the context of the German government's "Industry 4.0" initiative, and the project results provide a solid foundation for implementing the German government's high-tech strategy "Innovations for Germany" in the coming years.

    Description: Wird der Begriff des "Königs" heute vorwiegend in einem engeren politischen Sinne verstanden und gebraucht, so war dies im ausgehenden Mittelalter anders. Denn neben den bekannten 'politischen' Königen existierten hier noch zahlreiche 'andere' Könige. Sie standen Berufsgruppen vor, führten Genossenschaften an oder wurden im Rahmen wiederkehrender Zeremonien und Bräuche zu Festkönigen gekrönt. Spielleute und Herolde, Prostituierte und Händler hatten ebenso ihre Könige wie Bogenschützen oder Adelsgesellschaften. Dabei ging es jedoch nicht um Rituale der Verkehrung oder gar um Akte der Auflehnung und Rebellion. Auch diese Könige besaßen klare Funktionen und Privilegien, eine handfeste Machtstellung innerhalb ihrer Gruppe und wurden darin von den Autoritäten akzeptiert, ja teils erst eingesetzt. Der vorliegende Band hält erstmals eine systematische Zusammenschau dieses bisher unbeachtet gebliebenen Phänomens und fragt anhand ausgewählter Beispiele nach der Funktion und der gesellschaftlichen Rolle dieser 'anderen' Könige in ihrem jeweiligen Umfeld. Damit legt er die Grundlagen für ein neues, innovatives Forschungsfeld und bereichert die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Königtum um eine neue, unerwartete Perspektive.

    Description: Since the beginning of the 19th century, quantitative techniques have been used in literary and human sciences to describe, analyze and interpret texts. Such approaches were underrepresented until the end of the 20th century, but are becoming increasingly important in the digital humanities. The aim of the volume is to contextualize theories of theory, methodology and subject history on the one hand, and on the other hand to examine the significance of their results with a view to the digital present. In view of the innovative verve of digital humanities, it should not be forgotten that the idea of ​​juxtaposing interpretive close reading with descriptive-analytical, remote reading is not much younger than the idea of ​​close reading itself. Counting is by no means the first through the 'digital revolution' of the humanities. Rather, what has been determined by late Dilthey as the subject of the understanding and qualitatively oriented humanities has been declared 'measurable' for some 200 years.
    Description: Seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts werden in den Literatur- und Geisteswissenschaften quantitative Verfahren angewandt, um Texte zu beschreiben, zu analysieren und zu interpretieren. Bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts waren solche Ansätze unterrepräsentiert, gewinnen im Zuge der Digital Humanities jedoch sehr stark an Bedeutung. Ziel des Bandes ist es, quantifizierende Verfahren einerseits theorie-, methoden- und fachgeschichtlich zu kontextualisieren, andererseits aber auch mit Blick auf die digitale Gegenwart zu prüfen, welchen Stellenwert ihre Ergebnisse haben. Angesichts der innovativen Verve der Digital Humanities darf nicht vergessen werden, dass die Idee, einem interpretativen close reading ein (vermeintlich?) deskriptiv-analytisches distant reading gegenüberzustellen, nicht sehr viel jünger ist als die Idee des close reading selbst. Denn Zählen ist keinesfalls erst durch die 'digitale Revolution' der Geisteswissenschaften denkbar geworden. Vielmehr wird schon seit ungefähr 200 Jahren das, was vom späten Dilthey als Gegenstand der verstehenden und qualitativ orientierten Geisteswissenschaften bestimmt wurde, auch zum 'messbaren' Objekt erklärt.

Jahrhunderts rückt der säkulare Bruch des Jahres 1945 zunehmend in den Hintergrund. Stattdessen wird der Zäsurcharakter des Jahrzehnts ab 1970 immer bedeutender. Um 1970 hatte sich die Struktur der Industriestaaten rapide zu verflüssigen begonnen. Diese für Europa und Nordamerika charakteristische Formation war geprägt von der Montanindustrie im festen Rahmen des politisch autonomen Einzelstaats. Sie hatte die Epoche der Weltkriege hervorgebracht mit völlig neuartigen Formen von industrialisierter Kriegführung, Gewaltexzessen und Genozid und, im Wechsel damit, Phasen tiefgreifender sozialer Reform und politisch-gesellschaftlicher Neuordnung. Das Ende dieses Industriesystems stellte auch die sozialen und politischen Handlungsmuster des 20. Jahrhunderts in Frage.

    Description: The Complete Poetry of Du Fu presents a complete scholarly translation of Chinese literature alongside the original text in a critical edition. The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook.The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation.Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.

The design materials include a system overview, the system architecture, an example scenario, a stakeholder analysis, a task analysis, a description of the system and interface technology, and contextualized design guidelines. The guidelines can be specified because the user, the task, and the technology are well specified as an example. Building Better Interfaces for Remote Autonomous Systems is for working system engineers who are designing interfaces used in high throughput, high stake, operation centers (op centers) or control rooms, such as network operation centers (NOCs). Intended users will have a technical undergraduate degree (e.g., computer science) with little or no training in design, human sciences, or with human-centered iterative design methods and practices. Background research for the book was supplemented by interaction with the intended audience through a related project with L3Harris Technologies (formerly Harris Corporation).

    Description: Die deutsche Kulturpolitik im besetzten Paris 1940-1944 gestaltete sich widersprüchlich. Während sie kurzfristig aus taktischen Gründen der Sicherung von Ruhe und Ordnung das französische Kulturleben aufrecht erhielt, strebte sie langfristig die Verbreitung deutscher Kultur in Frankreich und die Errichtung einer deutschen "kulturellen Hegemonie" in Europa an. Kathrin Engel behandelt neben den Eingriffen der Besatzungsmacht in das französische Film- und Theaterleben schwerpunktmäßig den Versuch, die Franzosen mit Hilfe deutscher Theaterstücke und Filme von einer angeblich höher stehenden deutschen Kultur zu überzeugen. Dem militärischen Sieg über Frankreich sollte gerade in Paris, der Kulturhauptstadt Frankreichs, ein geistig-kultureller Sieg hinzugefügt werden. Die deutsche Kulturpropaganda, die letztlich zu Lasten des französischen Kulturlebens durchgesetzt werden sollte, war Gegenstand intensiver Kompetenzstreitigkeiten der deutschen Dienststellen und Funktionsträger in Berlin und Paris. Obwohl deren Vertreter vor Ort zum Teil erstaunlich autonom handelten, gehört die Vorstellung, im besetzten Paris hätten frankophile deutsche Offiziere eine besonders milde Kulturpolitik betrieben, in das Reich der Legenden. Die deutsche Kulturpolitik im besetzten Paris bildete keineswegs, wie vielfach angenommen, ein mildes Gegengewicht zu einer härteren deutschen Besatzungspolitik. Vielmehr folgte sie, wie diese Studie deutlich macht, der sich im Laufe der Okkupation mehr und mehr verschärfenden allgemeinen Besatzungspolitik.

The custom originated among Cumans in Eastern Europe. The skill of erecting anthropomorphic stelae required proficiency in processing different kinds of stone and wood, and was characterized by artistic value of representations, as well as by the timeless aesthetics of the canon. The author presents the results of her formative studies into the collection of the Cuman sculptures of the Veliko-Anadol Forest Museum, Ukraine. The book delves into the history of research on Cuman stone stelae, resulting in great reading for all archeologists and historians alike.

    Description: The emerging Jewish national consciousness in Europe toward the end of the 19th century claims many spiritual fathers, some of which have been seriously underestimated so far. Zionist intellectuals such as Moses Hess, Leon Pinsker and Isaac Rülf were already committed to the self-liberation of the Jewish people long before Theodor Herzl. Their experiences and observations brought them to believe that the emancipation and integration of Jews were not realistically possible in Europe. Instead, they began to think in national and territorial terms. The author explores the question as to what extent religious messianism influenced the ideas of these men and how this reflects in today's collective Israeli consciousness. In a comprehensive epilogue, Julius H. Schoeps critically correlates ideas of messianic salvation, Zionist pioneer ideals, the settler's movement before and after 1967, and the unsolved conflict between Israelis and Palestinians which has been lasting for over 100 years.

    Description: This open access book coherently gathers well-founded information on the fundamentals of and formalisms for modelling cyber-physical systems (CPS). Highlighting the cross-disciplinary nature of CPS modelling, it also serves as a bridge for anyone entering CPS from related areas of computer science or engineering. Truly complex, engineered systems—known as cyber-physical systems—that integrate physical, software, and network aspects are now on the rise. However, there is no unifying theory nor systematic design methods, techniques or tools for these systems. Individual (mechanical, electrical, network or software) engineering disciplines only offer partial solutions. A technique known as Multi-Paradigm Modelling has recently emerged suggesting to model every part and aspect of a system explicitly, at the most appropriate level(s) of abstraction, using the most appropriate modelling formalism(s), and then weaving the results together to form a representation of the system. If properly applied, it enables, among other global aspects, performance analysis, exhaustive simulation, and verification. This book is the first systematic attempt to bring together these formalisms for anyone starting in the field of CPS who seeks solid modelling foundations and a comprehensive introduction to the distinct existing techniques that are multi-paradigmatic. Though chiefly intended for master and post-graduate level students in computer science and engineering, it can also be used as a reference text for practitioners.

    Description: Historical scholarship and the digital humanities are still struggling to come to terms with the rise of Wikipedia, which has grown prodigiously in the last decade. Because of its enormous range, Wikipedia has made a significant impact on popular historical understanding. The contributors analyze Wikipedia as an external challenge to scholarship and sound out potential opportunities for collaboration with Wikipedia in research and teaching.
