    Description: This ambitious study of the proper names of the Chanson de Roland proves that it is more tightly and profoundly structured and considerably richer in depicting reality than generally assumed, and that its prehistory can be traced back (almost) to the Frankish defeat. Paris and Bédier were right on the main point close to their hearts: the song has both the thoroughly sophisticated structure (Bédier) and the imposingly long prehistory (Paris).

    Description: Is our thinking and thus the worldview the same or language-specific for all people? This book is an unequivocal answer to this age-old question, which was already pursued by Wilhelm von Humboldt: Our worldview is characterized by the grammar of one's mother tongue (s), so that people perceive, verbalise and also remember events in a language-specific way. These basic insights are made possible for the first time by the experimental approach of psycholinguistic methods (such as eye-tracking) selected here. The influence of language on cognition also proves to be extremely relevant to language contact. As a result of the centuries-long language contact between German and Czech, the aspect system of Czech has changed in such a way that event conzeptualization proceeds both in Czech and in German, and that Czech is systematically different from other East and West Slavic languages.

Auf diese uralte Fragestellung, der bereits Wilhelm von Humboldt nachgegangen ist, gibt dieses Buch eine eindeutig bejahende Antwort: Unsere Weltanschauung wird durch die Grammatik der eigenen Muttersprache(n) geprägt, sodass Menschen Ereignisse sprachspezifisch wahrnehmen, versprachlichen und auch erinnern. Diese grundlegenden Erkenntnisse sind durch den hier gewählten experimentellen Zugang psycholinguistischer Methoden (z.B. Eye-Tracking) erstmalig möglich.Der Einfluss von Sprache auf Kognition erweist sich darüber hinaus für Sprachkontakt als extrem relevant. Infolge des über Jahrhunderte andauernden Sprachkontakts zwischen dem Deutschen und Tschechischen hat sich das Aspekt-System des Tschechischen dahingehend geändert, dass die Ereigniskonzeptualisierung im Tschechischen wie im Deutschen verläuft und das Tschechische sich systematisch von anderen ost- und westslawischen Sprachen absetzt.

Il est original en ce qu’il propose une description intégrée du lexique, de la sémantique et de la syntaxe, prise en charge par la notion d’emploi. Un emploi est défini par un prédicat (du premier ou du second ordre) et l’ensemble des propriétés qui le caractérisent (schéma d’arguments, actualisation, transformations). Comme les mots n’ont de sens que dans leur environnement, l’unité minimale d’analyse adoptée ici est la phrase et non le mot. Analyser une langue, c’est décrire tous les emplois qui la constituent. Les descriptions ainsi obtenues peuvent être consignées dans un dictionnaire électronique, dont la structuration repose sur des paramètres précis et constants, ce qui permet une reconnaissance automatique des phrases d’un texte. Ce livre présente d’autres particularités : l’analyse des phrases complexes avec les mêmes outils que pour la phrase simple, la description des arguments à l’aide de classes d’objets, la conjugaison des prédicats nominaux au moyen de verbes supports, une description originale des subordonnées circonstancielles, l’importance accordée au figement, le souci de complétude des descriptions. Cet ouvrage est destiné aux étudiants de langue et de linguistique ainsi qu’aux spécialistes du traitement automatique.

    Description: La tradition avait rangé dans un tiroir à part les infinitifs dits substantivés et les adjectifs de même titre, les interjections et les mentions, et bien d’autres objets, dont l’identification catégorielle posait problème : dans le bleu du ciel bleu est-il un adjectif, est-il un nom ? Questionnement parallèle possible sur gouverner dans le gouverner autrement, ou sur diable dans Diable ! On remet ces données sur le métier avec l’objectif de rendre à la syntaxe et à la morphologie dérivationnelle ce qui leur appartient, même si la coupure est invisible. En effet, un terme X qui occupe une position Y demeure-t-il un X ou devient-il un Y ? S’il conserve son identité de X, acquiert-il certaines propriétés du fait de sa position ? S’il devient un Y, le devient-il momentanément, le temps de l’emploi ? Si la nouvelle appartenance catégorielle est stable, comment la morphologie rend-elle compte de ces homonymes ? Quelle est la propriété d’occupabilité de telle position, dans telle langue ? La remise en cause du caractère endocentrique des groupes syntagmatiques, l’identification du procédé non-affixal de conversion dans la morphologie du français, tels sont les principaux résultats, ce qui a conduit à chercher à comprendre pourquoi le phénomène de dérivés non-affixés avait été soit ignoré, soit confondu avec d’autres dans le fourre- tout de la "dérivation impropre". Ainsi, outre des propositions d’analyse de données du français, ce travail comporte un essai de démythologisation d’une notion grammaticale traditionnelle.

    Instruments and Related Concepts at the Syntax-Semantics Interface (2022)

    Description: Instruments constitute a classic member of the thematic role inventory, yet they are usually analyzed only peripherally, taking a back seat to the more studied members such as Agent and Patient. This dissertation investigates the semantic reality behind the label instrument from the functionalist perspective of Role & Reference Grammar. Starting from a theoretical investigation of what instrumentality truly means when contrasted with related concepts like comitatives, this book explores the morphosyntactic realization of instruments across a wide range of typologically diverse languages. Apart from the standard occurrences of instruments that come to mind from languages such as Latin, German or English, this book delves into several less common constructions that feature the instrument relation. Such constructions include, amongst others, passives with instruments and particularly the Instrument-Subject Alternation, a construction where the instrument seemingly appears as the subject of the sentence. This construction displays variation along three dimensions: 1) The instrument can vary from a very simple tool to a complicated machine, 2) the predicate can vary substantially and 3) languages differ widely with respect to the construction’s acceptability. This makes for a complex playing field where the animacy of the instrument but also the aktionsart class of the predicate play a major role. The last section of this book deals with linking the semantics of instruments and related concepts to their morphosyntactic realizations, including the various encoding strategies that are available in any given language. This book also features a concise introduction to Role & Reference Grammar. Dissertations in Language and Cognition: This series explores issues of mental representation, linguistic structure and representation, and their interplay. The research presented in this series is grounded in the idea explored in the Collaborative Research Center ‘The structure of representations in language, cognition and science’ (SFB 991) that there is a universal format for the representation of linguistic and cognitive concepts.

Trois idées-force animent cette démarche (i) la sémantique n’a aucun sens si elle n’est pas tournée vers (ce que nous croyons être) la réalité. L’ouvrage se place ainsi résolument dans un cadre réaliste, positiviste, qui entend mettre en rapport les formes linguistiques et les aspects pertinents des situations extra-linguistiques qui les sous-tendent. (ii) cette sémantique est résolument ouverte au cognitif en ce qu’elle s’ancre dans l’expérience humaine sous toutes ses dimensions interactives : perceptuelle, sociale, culturelle, etc. (III) elle maintient une place au sens "linguistique", conçu comme un phénomène intersubjectivement stable, dans l’interprétation globale d’un énoncé. Par là-même, une réponse attrayante et instructive est apportée à deux questions cruciales pour la saisie et l’analyse de la polysémie : jusqu’où faut-il l’étendre et à quel niveau de généralité faut-il la traiter ?

    Description: L’enquête linguistique menée dans l’ouvrageo montre que les deux manières de concevoir les événements qui divisent profondément les philosophes contemporains, sont en réalité présentes et pour ainsi dire disponibles dans la pensée inscrite dans les structures d’une langue comme le français. Selon la première conception, qui est aussi la plus répandue, ils sont comme des entités individuelles ordinaires : de deux événements impliquant les mêmes entités, celui-ci est toujours irréductiblement différent de celui- là, ne serait-ce que parce qu’ils n’occupent pas la même portion d’espace-temps. Selon l’autre, ces prétendus individus sont en réalité des instances d’un seul et même événement, qui n’est ni cette instance-ci, ni celle-là. Mais la langue ne choisit pas, et offre la possibilité de passer d’un point de vue à l’autre, en passant simplement d’une structure syntaxique à une autre. Centrée autour des noms d’événements, la démarche commence par situer la notion correspondante dans un réseau où elle voisine avec celles de fait et d’action, entre autres. Elle se termine par une tentative de répondre, toujours par des moyens linguistiques, à la question de savoir si la pensée du temps inscrite dans la langue implique que ce soit le temps qui fonde les événements ou l’inverse. La question, parallèle à celle du rapport entre choses et espace, débouche sur celle de l’expression linguistique de l’existence. L’ouvrage tente donc de remplir sur le sujet des événements la partie linguistique du programme de la philosophie du langage ordinaire, partie que peu de ces philosophes (à l’exception de Vendler) ont pu remplir, faute d’être eux-mêmes linguistes.

L’état stationnaire du traitement du sens et de la référence des mots construits peut en effet être exposé dans un rapport bref : - D’un côté, la particularité sémantique et référentielle des mots ayant une structure construite a été remarquée, depuis que la linguistique existe pourrait-on dire : des noms comme poirier, cerisier et pommier sont particularisés par Saussure en tant que “signes relativement motivés”. Dans un métalangage plus actuel, on soulignerait plutôt que le sens et le contenu de la catégorie référentielle de poirier, de cerisier et de pommier peuvent se calculer respectivement à partir du sens et de la catégorie référentielle de poire, de cerise et de pomme. - D’un autre côté, la spécificité manifeste du sens et de la référence des mots construits demeure ignorée dans la recherche en linguistique. De façon générale, en effet, les morphologues se sont polarisés sur l’étude de la structure des mots construits, laissant de côté leur sens, et aucune théorie de sémantique lexicale n’a mis en place les moyens nécessaires pour élaborer une description du sens et de la référence des mots construits différente de celle des mots non construits. Voulant combattre cette paralysie, l’auteur conduit des analyses minutieuses de faits observables qui permettent de : (i) cerner en quoi consiste la spécificité du sens et de la référence des mots construits, (ii) montrer pourquoi ni les définitions lexicographiques, ni les principales théories de sémantique lexicale, ni la plupart des modèles de morphologie dérivationnelle ne parviennent à rendre compte de façon satisfaisante du sens de ce type de mots et de la façon dont ils constituent leur catégorie référentielle, (iii) proposer une voie théorique pour parvenir à une représentation sémantique et référentielle adéquate des mots construits.

    Description: Instruments constitute a classic member of the thematic role inventory, yet they are usually analyzed only peripherally, taking a back seat to the more studied members such as Agent and Patient. This dissertation investigates the semantic reality behind the label instrument from the functionalist perspective of Role & Reference Grammar. Starting from a theoretical investigation of what instrumentality truly means when contrasted with related concepts like comitatives, this book explores the morphosyntactic realization of instruments across a wide range of typologically diverse languages. Apart from the standard occurrences of instruments that come to mind from languages such as Latin, German or English, this book delves into several less common constructions that feature the instrument relation. Such constructions include, amongst others, passives with instruments and particularly the Instrument-Subject Alternation, a construction where the instrument seemingly appears as the subject of the sentence. This construction displays variation along three dimensions: 1) The instrument can vary from a very simple tool to a complicated machine, 2) the predicate can vary substantially and 3) languages differ widely with respect to the construction’s acceptability. This makes for a complex playing field where the animacy of the instrument but also the aktionsart class of the predicate play a major role. The last section of this book deals with linking the semantics of instruments and related concepts to their morphosyntactic realizations, including the various encoding strategies that are available in any given language. This book also features a concise introduction to Role & Reference Grammar.

    Description: Adhesive abilities of insects, spiders and reptiles have inspired researchers for a long time. All these organisms show outstanding performance, particularly for force, adhesion and climbing abilities, relative to their size and weight. Scientists have focused on the gecko’s adhesive paw system and climbing abilities. Its adhesion mechanism has been an important topic of research for nearly 150 years. However, certain phenomena of geckos are still not fully understood and represent today the main challenge in several scientific discussions that aim to better understand their adhesive ability. The manuscript deals with the influence of surface roughness on the gecko’s adhesion on the inverted surface of Poly(methyl meth-acrylate) (PMMA) and glass, of PMMA with different surface roughness, on the gecko’s maximum normal adhesive force. In general, the adhesive structure and mechanism of an animal could be connected to the micro-structured roughness of natural substrata (e.g. plant surfaces) in the natural environment. This manuscript focuses on the nanometer scale, which is involved in everything from gecko spatulae to the waxy nanotubules of the lotus leaf, to the fibroin protein materials that constitute spider silks. In general, spider silks display superior mechanical properties, but only in the last few decades, researchers investigated various types of silks and evaluated their very different mechanical properties. The dragline and the flag silks (or radial and circumferential) of orb weaving spiders have been characterized in scientific literature while, to our knowledge, few studies have been conducted on bundles, which connect the cocoons of Meta menardi to the ceiling of caves.

    Description: Semantics is one of the core disciplines of philosophy of language. There are basically two strands of established theories: use-based and truth-conditional, with the latter being the dominant variety. This dominance has been questioned recently by linguists who embrace a research paradigm that is known as construction grammar. As construction grammar is use-based, it seems natural to suppose that its success is indirect support for use-based semantics in philosophy. This is true. But there's still a lot to do. Although there are use-based theories that fit quite well with current research in linguistics, they are far from being perfect. In particular, the most popular theory in that area is still tied to some of the main motivations behind truth-conditional semantics. ‘Constructions in Use’ offers an alternative by proposing to let this legacy go. Instead, it argues that philosophical semantics is best off if it goes for an entirely use-based theory.

    Definiteness in a Language without Articles – A Study on Polish (2021)

    Description: The aim of this book is to investigate how definiteness is expressed in Polish, a language which is claimed to have no definite and in-definite articles. The central question is how the difference in definiteness is indicated between 'a woman' and 'the woman' in Polish. In English, the definite article 'the' and the indefinite article 'a' express the category of definiteness explicitly. Since definiteness is also relevant in articleless languages, there are other means to indicate that a nominal phrase is definite or indefinite. This study is delimited to four means for expressing definiteness in Polish, which are demonstratives, aspect, case alternation, and information structure. Each strategy is investigated independently from the others, although they interact in a complex way, which is shown at the end of this book resulting in a decision tree. Polish is not investigated in isolation, however, the study is complemented by comparisons with other Slavic languages and also with a Polish dialect called 'Upper Silesian', which differs from Polish. The analysis in this book is based on Löbner’s theory of 'Concept Types and Determination' (CTD). Löbner’s distinction of the four concept types (sortal, relational, functional, individual) is crucial since definiteness phenomena under discussion can be explained. Therefore, the interaction of the four concept types with the four definiteness strategies plays a central role in this book.

This study empirically reconstructs the practices characteristic of such situations between art communication and recreation, sociability and informal learning on a conversational basis.

Dagegen wird aus kritischer Perspektive unterstellt, derartige Gespräche dienten primär der sozialen Distinktion, bei inhaltlicher Banalität.     Description: La notion de "nom abstrait" a derrière elle une longue tradition - abordée dès la période scholastique, elle accompagne plusieurs tournants de l’histoire de la logique et de la grammaire -, mais aucun travail d’ensemble ne lui avait, à ce jour, été consacré. Le colloque organisé à Dunkerque en septembre 1992, qui a réuni plus d’une cinquantaine de chercheurs français et étrangers, avait donc pour but de faire le point sur un problème d’autant plus important qu’il concerne à la fois la logique, les différents champs de la linguistique et la traductologie. La question du nom abstrait soulève plusieurs difficultés, dont la principale est de déterminer s’il est possible d’associer la notion intuitive d’abstraction à des propriétés logico-syntaxiques et à des caractéristiques morphologiques. Le nom abstrait semble en effet soumis à deux contraintes antagonistes : l’influence sémantique de sa base prédicative et le rôle formel de la catégorie nominale. On trouvera donc dans cet ouvrage un ensemble de réflexions critiques et d’analyses, portant non seulement sur la distinction entre noms concrets et noms abstraits et sur sa validité pour la description linguistique, mais encore sur la pertinence de la notion d’abstraction en général dans l’approche des faits de langue. Sous des angles très divers, toutes les démarches s’accordent à reconnaître l’importance de ce mouvement delà pensée qui, d’une part, permet de séparer les qualités et les procès de leur support - ou si l’on préféré les prédicats de leurs arguments - et qui, de l’autre, conduit à négliger les différences individuelles pour acceder au général.

    Description: Polarity (positive, negative) is one of the most fundamental concepts in the system of language and there are many expressions that are sensitive to polarity. For example, any in English and wh-mo in Japanese appear in negative contexts, but not in positive contexts. While previous studies have shown that polarity-sensitive expressions are a general phenomenon in languages, it has also become clear that there are variations in polarity-sensitive expressions. This volume explores the variations in polarity-sensitive expressions through comparisons between Japanese and other languages, such as English, German, Spanish, and Old Japanese, and examines the environments and contexts in which polarity-sensitive expressions occur, as well as the types of (cross-linguistic) variation allowed. The value of the present volume lies in its inclusion of research papers inquiring into various types of polarity-sensitive expressions, such as negative-, positive-, and discourse-sensitive polarity items as well as their variations.     Description: Historical text species research is still a relatively unexplored field for German, and so far only a few historical text types have been recorded and described. With the medical reports, this study focuses on a historical text class, which was of central importance for medical communication as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. Starting point of the investigation are common, present-oriented textlinguistic description approaches that are modified for language-historical contexts and extended by important pragmatic categories. The greater consideration of meta-communicative knowledge inventories, as manifested in rhetoric textbooks, text-type guides and text-type designations, has proven particularly fruitful. On the basis of this broad analysis model, the respective text types - Consilia, court reports and section reports - are examined and described in terms of cultural and historical science as well as with regard to the linguistic characteristics typical for them. The study thus offers not only language and medical historians but also cultural scientists an interesting insight into the medical specialist communication of the time.
    Description: Die historische Textsortenforschung ist für das Deutsche ein noch relativ unerschlossenes Feld und so sind bisher nur einige wenige historische Textsorten erfasst und beschrieben. Mit den medizinischen Gutachten nimmt diese Studie eine historische Textsortenklasse in den Blick, die schon im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert von zentraler Bedeutung für die ärztliche Kommunikation war. Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung sind gängige, gegenwartsbezogene textlinguistische Beschreibungsansätze, die für sprachhistorische Kontexte modifiziert und um wichtige pragmatische Kategorien erweitert werden. Als besonders fruchtbar erweist sich die stärkere Berücksichtigung metakommunikativer Wissensbestände wie sie sich in Rhetoriklehrbüchern, Textsortenanleitungen und Textsortenbenennungen manifestieren. Auf der Basis dieses breit angelegten Analysemodells werden die entsprechenden Textsorten – Consilia, Gerichtsgutachten und Sektionsberichte – kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch sowie hinsichtlich der für sie typischen sprachlichen Merkmale untersucht und beschrieben. Die Studie bietet damit nicht nur für Sprach- und Medizinhistoriker, sondern auch für Kulturwissenschaftler einen interessanten Einblick in die medizinische Fachkommunikation dieser Zeit.
