Description: Gottfried Kellers Welten erscheint als dritter Band der Serie „Gottfried Kellers Moderne“. Description: In a global context in which phenomena of migration play an ever more important role, the ways individual and collective experiences of migration are covered in the media, represented in culture, and interpreted are coming under increasing scrutiny. This book explores the complex relationship between creative engagements with migration on the one hand, and forms of knowledge about migration on the other, inquiring into the ways aesthetic practices are intertwined with knowledge structures. The book responds to three pressing research questions. First, it analyses how fictional texts, plays, images, films, and autobiographical accounts mediate forms of knowledge about migration. Second, it identifies the ways in which specific media approaches and aesthetic practices influence people’s ideas about and awareness of migratory experiences in a globalized world. Finally, it delineates how historical perspectives help us compare epistemological approaches to migration in the nineteenth, twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries, and how these approaches affect the way critics and the public responded to and thought about different forms of (forced) migration. Bringing together renowned scholars working across disciplines, it investigates the possibilities and limitations that different media present when it comes to reflecting on, communicating, and imagining experiences of migration, and how these representations in turn create ways of knowing and understanding migration. ; In a global context in which phenomena of migration play an ever more important role, the ways individual and collective experiences of migration are covered in the media, represented in culture, and interpreted are coming under increasing scrutiny. Description: In the recent cultural heritage boom, community-based and national identity projects are intertwined with interest in cultural tourism and sites of the memory of enslavement. Questions of historical guilt and present responsibility have become a source of social conflict, particularly in multicultural societies with an enslaving past. This became apparent in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, when statues of enslavers and colonizers were toppled, controversial debates about streets and places named after them re-ignited, and the European Union apologized for slavery after the racist murder of George Floyd. Related debates focus on museums, on artworks acquired unjustly in societies under colonial rule, the question of whether and how museums should narrate the hidden past of enslavement and colonialism, including their own colonial origins with respect to narratives about presumed European supremacy, and the need to establish new monuments for the enslaved, their resistance, and abolitionists of African descent. In this volume, we address this dissonant cultural heritage in Europe, with a strong focus on the tangible remains of enslavement in the Atlantic space in the continent. This may concern, for instance, the residences of royal, noble, and bourgeois enslavers; charitable and cultural institutions, universities, banks, and insurance companies, financed by the traders and owners of enslaved Africans; merchants who dealt in sugar, coffee, and cotton; and the owners of factories who profited from exports to the African and Caribbean markets related to Atlantic slavery. ; In the recent cultural heritage boom, community-based and national identity projects are intertwined with interest in cultural tourism and sites of the memory of enslavement. Description: This book’s goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture. Its main hypothesis is that poetry holds considerable potential for (post-)digital language, image, and media criticism. The visual dimensions of recent poetry encompass, for instance, kinetic writing in digital poetry, visual elements in social media poems, and (spoken and written) text-image interactions in poetry films as well as in book poetry. The articles examine these medial correlations and their political implications by asking how visual culture is applied, exposed, and debated in poetry. This volume brings together contributions by authors from various countries working in disciplines such as literary, media, and film studies, linguistics, cultural and visual culture studies, and in poetic practice. It covers poetry in English, German, Norwegian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian, and also multilingual works. The book thus aims to promote international exchange between poetry researchers and stimulate further investigation into current relations between poetry and visuality from additional research perspectives and languages. ; This book’s goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture. Description: This study, based on extensive archival research, sheds light on the writings attributed to the sixteenth-century sculptor Baccio Bandinelli (Libro del disegno, Memoriale) and analyses them in their historical and artistic context, while offering a portrait of the erudite activity of Bandinelli's grandson, Baccio the Younger, within the broader framework of early modern genealogical culture in Florence. ; This study, based on extensive archival research, sheds light on the writings attributed to the sixteenth-century sculptor Baccio Bandinelli (Libro del disegno, Memoriale) and analyses them in their historical and artistic context, while offering a portrait of the erudite activity of Bandinelli's grandson, Baccio the Younger, within the broader framework of early modern genealogical culture in Florence.

On the other hand, it uses mediality to draw out the central aesthetic tension between artistic creation and the socially oriented functions of mediation.

Description: „Kellers Wissen“ erscheint als vierter Band der Serie „Gottfried Kellers Moderne“. Description: Mediterranean studies flourish in literary and cultural studies, but concepts of the Mediterranean and the theories and methods they use are very disparate. This is because the Mediterranean is not a simple geographical or historical unity, but a multiplicity, a network of highly interconnected elements, each of which is different and individual. Talking about Mediterranean literature raises the question of whether the connectivity of Mediterranean literature can or should be limited in some way by constructing an inside and an outside of the Mediterranean. What kind of connectivity and fragmentation do literary texts produce, how do they build and interrupt references (to the real, to fictional forms of representation, to history, but also to other texts and discourses), how do they create and deny communication, and how do they engage with and reflect literary and non-literary concepts of the Mediterranean? These and other questions are considered and discussed in the over twenty contributions gathered in this volume. ; Mediterranean studies flourish in literary and cultural studies, but concepts of the Mediterranean and the theories and methods they use are very disparate. Description: The concept of love’s wound has haunted European culture for centuries. This book investigates this fundamental concept in Medieval French, Occitan, and Italian literature – with the purpose of tracing its transformation through a selection of medieval literary masterpieces, sacred and profane. The imagery of love’s wound is analysed with multiple approaches, considering also representations of the theme in manuscript illuminations.

Description: Situated at the intersection between medical humanities, aging studies, autobiographical studies, disability studies and ethic studies, this book explores the fascination of centenarians' autobiographies for humanites research. It can be argued that the growing presence of centenarians' autobiographies on book markets across the globe may by rooted in the public's desire for positive images of aging, in contrast to the image of inevitable decay.

Description: Der Sonderforschungsbereich Andere Ästhetik untersucht, wie vormoderne Artefakte ihren ästhetischen Status reflektieren. The starting point is three differentiated forms of "Schein" in German: as a ray of light itself, as in "shine," or appearance as becoming visible or, finally, as an illusion – seeming to be so. The contributions analyze under which cultural-historical conditions and within which concrete forms aesthetic configurations are perceived and evaluated.

Description: This volume concludes the edition of Heinrich von Mügeln's smaller poems. This is the first complete edition of the hymns of one of the most important poets of the 14th century. The volume also contains two of Mügeln's Latin texts: 'Artes liberales' and 'Libri tocius biblie', two summaries on the liberal arts and the books of the Old Testament. The centerpiece of the volume is 'Der meide kranz', an allegorical poem about the struggle between the liberal arts and between the virtues and nature, written in honor of Emperor Charles IV. An index of names and words makes the entire edition accessible and thus forms an essential key to the author's oeuvre.

Description: This volume examines the ten most popular fictional narratives in early modern Europe between 1470 and 1800. Each of these narratives was marketed in numerous European languages and circulated throughout several centuries. Combining literary studies and book history, this work offers for the first time a transnational perspective on a selected text corpus of this genre. It explores the spatio-temporal transmission of the texts in different languages and the materiality of the editions: the narratives were bought, sold, read, translated and adapted across European borders, from the south of Spain to Iceland and from Great Britain to Poland. Thus, the study analyses the multi-faceted processes of cultural circulation, translation and adaptation of the texts. In their diverse forms of mediality such as romance, drama, ballad and penny prints, they also make a significant contribution to a European identity in the early modern period. The narrative texts examined here include Apollonius, Septem sapientum, Amadis de Gaula, Fortunatus, Pierre de Provence et la belle Maguelonne, Melusine, Griseldis, Aesopus’ Life and Fables, Reynaert de vos and Till Ulenspiegel. ; This volume examines the ten most popular fictional narratives in early modern Europe between 1470 and 1800. Description: The life and miracles of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia are the subject of the 'Life of Elisabeth' by the Eisenach council scribe Johannes Rothe (ca. 1360-1434). Rothe, who had already written spiritual works and three extensive chronicles ('Eisenacher Stadtchronik', 'Thüringische Landeschronik' and 'Weltchronik'), offers a comprehensive rendition of the chronicle and legendary tradition in the rhyming verse legend of over 4,000 verses, whereby, in addition to the chronicles, he particularly exploits the Latin Vita of Dietrich von Apolda. In the formal connection to the legends of the saints and the orientation towards chronicles in terms of content, Rothe adopts a cross-genre standpoint. Elisabeth's life is integrated into the genealogy of the landgrave's dynasty and thus becomes part of the landgrave's memorial culture. In the history of the text's reception, with numerous copies up to the 18th century, there is evidence of corresponding emphases: the work was used partly as a devotional book and partly as part of the dynastic memoria of the Thuringian dynasty.

Description: At the end of the 1970s, a new genre cycle was formed in US cinema. Starting with space opera in cinema, for which George Lucas' Star Wars is paradigmatic, fantasy established itself for the first time as an independent cinematic genre in distinction from fairy tales and fantastic fiction. The enthusiasm for pen & paper role-playing games and the continuing J. R. R. Tolkien craze culminated in the following years in a series of films that absorbed, pushed and further developed the diversity of modern film technology and production: the spectrum of films ranged from live-action films (Conan the Barbarian) to puppet animation (The Dark Crystal) to animated films (The Last Unicorn), in which George Lucas as well as Jim Henson and the production companies behind them at the time played leading roles. Contemporary critics had written these films off as conservative, sometimes even reactionary genre plays. In contrast, this essay unfolds a (historical) poetics of the US fantasy film. With its film-analytical case studies, the volume shows how the films of the years 1977 to 1987 are embedded in a specific film culture and how the genre cycle as part of the Hollywood system prepared and significantly influenced the triumph of blockbuster cinema in the 1990s.

Description: Andronikos Kallistos, a leading personality among the Greeks who participated in Italian Humanism, was a scholar, teacher and copyist of manuscripts. This book investigates Kallistos’ scholarly and scribal activity by adopting a synergistic approach to historical, philological, codicological and paleographic data, in order to shed light on his role at the time of the transfer of Greek cultural heritage to Italy and, hence, throughout Europe.

Description: This book develops a theory of wild translation. It describes literary strategies that not only serve to translate content but also produce new poetic texts out of foreign linguistic material. Analyses of Johann Fischart’s Geschichtklitterung (1575) and Arno Schmidt’s Zettel’s Traum (1970) examine the function and aesthetic implications of this technique and how it is poetologically negotiated in the texts themselves.

Description: During the genesis of the Americas, "invention" was not the same thing as "discovery": what was invented preceded what was found and changed that discovery to the extent that both mutually permeated each other. This formed the foundation for both the indigenous population and their "discoverers," for deported slaves and for procured coolies. This lecture volume traces this process in detail, which still continues to this day.

Using the example of the Neo-Spanish Dominican fray Servando Teresa de Mier (1763–1827), it examines how Hispanic American writers of the transition between the early modern and modern period transgressed geographic, cultural, and discursive border regimes, thereby preparing the political and literary independency of the previous Spanish colonies.

Description: Qui, aujourd’hui, connaît encore Balthasar Baro ?

Description: Rivers have always been a formative component of spaces. They serve as natural borders, mold the character of a landscape, shape how entire regions look, and often mark politically contested border areas. At the same time, river landscapes constitute spaces of contact and exchange, thereby helping spatial cultures and cultural spaces to grow. The aim of this volume is to outline the diversity of river landscapes.

Description: The publication aims to view analogy relations as heuristic magic sticks or semiotic universals through which the unknown can be heuristically opened up with the help of the known. This means that analogies simultaneously have analysing, synthesising and playful basic functions that can open up very diverse resonance spaces for us. It further implies that analogy assumptions also serve to bring the world of objects into a fruitful interaction context with the world of subjects. In this way, Cassirer's thesis that man is a genuine sign being (animal symbolicum), which can and must open up its life world with the help of cultural signs, can be exemplified very well.

In studies on authors like Lucilius, Varro, Horace, Petronius, Hamann, and Jean Paul, Sina Dell’Anno takes a new perspective on this tradition by focusing her attention on the notorious formlessness of satirical texts as the engine of her autophilological poetics.

Description: This volume views the rapid mediatization of society in the nineteenth century as a productive framework for the "media worker" Theodor Fontane. Embedded within a ramified network of postal text circulation, familiar with the popular periodical press, for which he would write throughout his life, and shaped in various ways by the visual culture of his time, this volume demonstrates that Fontane was a journalistic and aesthetic crossover artist.
