    Description: The sustainable transformation of society is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Universities are central actors for knowledge generation and transfer in the sustainability field and, at the same time, are facing the question of how they can become sustainable social actors and make their activities and infrastructure sustainable. Against this background, the 16 member universities of the State Rectors' Conference of North Rhine-Westphalia have joined forces in the Humboldtn initiative to pool their efforts in the field of sustainability and to anchor generational responsibility for sustainable action in research, teaching, administration, infrastructure, and transfer. How the joint responsibility for the questions for the future in the aforementioned complex of topics is addressed via Humboldtn and which focal points are set in the process will be presented and discussed using examples from the institutional sustainability transformation and examples from the research area from RWTH Aachen University. In this way, the implementation of transformation processes at universities and their possible blueprint effect can be illuminated.

    Description / Table of Contents: This book, entitled Tracking Environmental Change Using Lake Sediments: Volume 6 – Sedimentary DNA, provides an overview of the applications of sedimentary DNA-based approaches to paleolimnological studies. These approaches have shown considerable potential in providing information about the long-term changes of overall biodiversity in lakes and their watersheds in response to natural and anthropogenic changes, as well as tracking human migrations over the last thousands of years. Although the first studies investigating the preservation of these molecular proxies in sediments originate from the late-1990s, the number of scientific publications on this topic has increased greatly over the last five years. Alongside numerous ecological findings, several sedimentary DNA studies have been dedicated to understanding the reliability of this approach to reconstruct past ecosystem changes. Despite the major surge of interest, a comprehensive compilation of sedimentary DNA approaches and applications has yet to be attempted. The overall aim of this DPER volume is to fill this knowledge gap.

The main topics include: (i) the time of first settlement and the origin of the first settlers; (ii) the main features of prehistoric Rapanui culture and their changes; (iii) the deforestation of the island and its timing and causes; (iv) the extinction of the indigenous biota, (v) the occurrence of climatic shifts and their potential effects on socioecological trends; (vi) the evidence for a cultural and demographic collapse before European contact; and (vii) the influence of Europeans on prehistoric Rapanui society. From these various perspectives, Spain and Portugal continue to have an important mission in the challenges in today's world as interlocutors and transmission belts between different global spaces. It concerns, in particular, the theme of "Anthropic disasters. An integral approach", so it is a very unusual character. Let's say that the type of risks it deals with, the synthesis nature it presents and the organizational structure chosen, gives it a singular character in the contemporary world context. In the path of anthropic disasters, two major risk groups were considered, namely technological and social. The first relate to structural systems to support human activity, such as transport, civil construction, urban spaces (fires, waste) and water resources. The second is associated with social action, and it addresses issues ranging from conflict to Urbicicide.

In the following chapters, the main palatial complexes and other habitats are described, framed within the so-called Cretan Thalassocracy in the Aegean. The work continues with religion, discussing its cults and rituals, as well as the different writing systems found on small clay tablets (hieroglyphic, linear A and B) and the enigmatic Phaistos Disc.     Description: O discurso Contra Neera atribuído a Apolodoro, que integra o Corpus Demosthenicum, apresenta um retrato muito expressivo da vida quotidiana do século IV a. C. da cosmopolita cidade de Atenas, capital dos grandes Oradores Áticos. Este discurso da vida privada permite espreitar os bastidores da existência íntima de uma cortesã e do seu esforço para tentar sobreviver numa sociedade confinada por regras e por limites difíceis de transpor. A cidade de Atenas dos séculos V e IV a.C. permitia comportamentos extrovertidos, ao mesmo tempo que mantinha um corpo legal preparado para zelar pelo bem-estar de homens ou mulheres que viviam na polis. Neera, a sua família e o seu companheiro Estéfano atraem, por isso, olhares que criticam o seu modo de vida, os seus comportamentos, as suas companhias e o aparente despudor das suas atitudes. Não parece justo ao orador deste discurso que se aplauda a vida de uma hetera, ou cortesã, ou se faça silêncio sobre o seu modo de viver, ou simplesmente saia impune dos crimes de que é acusada. É destas histórias e das suas entrelinhas que trata o discurso Contra Neera, que constitui, por isso mesmo, um dos mais vívidos e significativos documentos sociológicos da Grécia antiga.

Faz uma síntese do contexto científico- médico internacional, mostrando os progressos da medicina, onde além da biologia se inicia no fim do século XIX o estudo das formulações psicogenéticas. Depois analisa o contexto nacional, incluindo legislação, os estabelecimentos e sua história, os regulamentos, planos de reforma, publicações e divulgação científica, e o ensino, com destaque para a reforma de 1911. Os protagonistas, as suas ideias e trabalhos publicados são analisados, procurando mostrar as suas diferenças de opinião em diversas matérias, em tempos históricos atravessados por conflitos sociais e políticos, mas de grande riqueza no plano das ideias. Se na primeira fase as principais figuras são arautos de correntes filosóficas e científicas oitocentistas, na segunda fase surgem novas ideias que permitem a renovação das relações entre a neurologia e a psiquiatria, divulgando-se uma atitude mais psicológica e psicoterapêutica. Em conclusão, a psiquiatria, de acordo com um alargamento pluridisciplinar, vai definindo formas mais diversificadas de tratamento institucional, com uma visão biológica mais integradora.

    Description: Dos 581 títulos que constituem o fundo bibliográfico antigo da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra e que abarcam os séculos XV a XVIII, cabem ao século XV apenas cinco, constituindo, assim, os denominados incunábulos, o núcleo mais antigo. Do século XVI podem destacar-se nomes como Amato Lusitano, Aristóteles, Avicena, Guido de Chauliac, Dioscórides, Hipócrates, Galeno, Jacopo da Forli, Rasis, o “damasceno” Mesue e Pedro Julião ou Pedro Hispano. Estes são os principais manuais que contêm, na sua maior parte, comentários aos clássicos gregos da medicina, particularmente Galeno, Hipócrates e Dioscórides, pois o estudo medieval feito a partir do comentário, geralmente traduzido graficamente pelo texto original da auctoritas a ocupar o centro da página, destacado pelo corpo do tipo e rodeado pelo comentário ou glosa, ainda estava muito presente no século XVI. Em matérias tão sensíveis como a Medicina, as afirmações tinham que estar fundamentadas em qualquer dos autores reconhecidos como autoridades. Do século XVII constam algumas obras de autores portugueses como Duarte Madeira Arrais, Manuel de Azevedo, Rodrigo de Castro (segundo alguns o fundador da obstetrícia portuguesa), Rodrigo da Fonseca, Tomás Rodrigues da Veiga e Abraão Zacuto, este impresso em Lyon e Amsterdão, tal como alguns dos atrás citados, o que atesta o reconhecimento internacional dos estudos destes autores portugueses. Do século XVIII, a par com as farmacopeias, avulta um número significativo de obras de cirurgia, algumas das quais de autoria portuguesa e numerosos dicionários de matéria médica, de História da Medicina e, curiosamente, dicionários portáteis de saúde, na linha dos tratados da saúde dos povos. Autores portugueses como Jacob de Castro Sarmento, João Curvo Semedo, Feliciano de Almeida e outros, publicam as suas obras em Portugal e no estrangeiro. Intensifica-se a produção de obras de Fisiologia, Física médica e medicina conservativa e preventiva. O presente trabalho descreve minuciosamente cada um dos exemplares deste fundo, dando especial relevo

    Description: Unified by the theoretical and hermeneutical arch that links physics to metaphysics, the three subjects here analysed, belonging to the famous Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis Socíetatis lesu (1592-1606) - colour, nature and knowledge - strike the reader by their modernity. The first, reveals Coimbra productivity, regarding Manuel de Góis’ theory of colours, so similar to Goethe’s; the second, underlines ali the aesthetical possibilities the Coimbra Commentaries may confer to some theoretical domains as anthropology, cosmology or even science; lastly, after studying a theological theme that pertains to the doctrine of the knowledge, “separation”, to the reader is proposed a surprisingly interpretation: the Cartesian tone ofthis precise theme.

    Description: The growing porosity of the boundaries between the justice system and the media should be considered with reference to the demands of the present age. It is difficult for contemporary societies to deal with a justice system that is closed in upon itself and oriented by a strict rationality. They demand more scrutiny of judicial decisions, clearer and more transparent discursive practices, and more accountability to the public and the media. However, these societies do not have any structure for mediating social reality and the formation of communicative opinion, which means that the communicational exchanges that take place in the various fields of collective life are amplified by being managed within a broad public area and used to construct a multiplicity of relations.ALT_QUEBRA_LINHADespite the areas of tension involved, the justice system and the media are, we believe, in a position to foster a better understanding, not only on a normative level, given the public responsibilities accruing to both institutions in contemporary democracies, but also empirically, as this book attempts to show. In fact, by stimulating reflection about the boundaries that join and separate the different levels of formal public deliberation, as represented by the courts, and the informal level represented by the media, this collection of texts manages to redeem the traditional theorization in this domain from a revived scepticism.

    Description: Trinummus is another fabula palliata by Plautus. Enriched by the art of the Latin author, the result was too tedious and very elitist, compared to what usually characterized the Plautine comic. Through stock characters of fixed social types (e.g. the old, the Young, the slaves), several cultural themes are analyzed, such as friendship, morality, loyalty, money. Thus, the senex Charmides, whose assets were in danger because of the conduct of his son, Lesbonicus, leaves Athens. Meanwhile, his young son and daughter were trusted to his friend Callicles, as well as his house. Secretly, Callicles told Charmides about the treasure buried in his home. However, Charmides was in a dilemma, between keeping the secret of his friend and avoiding the dissolute spirit of Lesbonicus. Using his father’s journey to his own profit, the youngster put the house for sale. Therefore, Callicles felt the moral obligation of purchasing it. Lisiteles involuntarily made the situation worse, because of his intention to marry Lesbonicus’ sister. The proposal required a dowry, which constituted a problem to Lesbonicus and to Callicles. This senior, wrongly judged both socially (cf. Megaronides), and privately (cf. Charmides, who had returned from his trip), was finally thanked and praised, when all the facts were acknowledged.

    Description: This book has been produced as a tribute to the work of Martin Lee on the role of sport in the socio-moral education of young people. After conducting the first UK conference on Children in Sport, founded the 〈em〉Institute for the Study of Children in Sport〈/em〉 at 〈em〉Bedford College of Higher Education〈/em〉 in 1986 and created level 1, 2 and 3 courses on coaching children for the 〈em〉National Coaching Foundation〈/em〉. He also edited a book on Coaching Children in Sport. His course book on Coaching Children in Mini-basketball was produced for international distribution. The study of values has been central in Martin’s research which also embraced such topics as self-concept, leadership, coaching behaviour, and parental influence. In a series of research commissions examined the literature, clarified measurement requirements, identified values activated in sport, and led an international project on fair play. He then ran a survey to show how values influence attitudes directly and through the mediation of achievement goals. Two new instruments arose from this research: the 〈em〉Attitudes to Moral Decision-making in Youth Sport Questionnaire 〈/em〉and the〈em〉 Youth Sport Values Questionnaire-2. 〈/em〉These will open up research into gamesmanship, by which competitors seek an unfair advantage without breaking the rules, and into the mechanisms by which moral, competence and status values guide behaviour and create value conflicts. I am also grateful to colleagues at the University of Coimbra for their initiative in gathering the distinguished international scholars who have contributed to this book. Their collective insights will enhance the understanding of socio-moral education through sport and lead to informed and sensitive policy development in both sport and education.

    Description: The tools used in scientific research are constantly changing and HPLC with photodiode array detection technique has become an important and popular technology used in studies such as plant extract analysis, drug discovery and development, the monitoring of manufacturing processes and quality assurance. The HPLC/photodiode array technique is also an important base tool of pure science. The authors have provided a compilation of valuable and unique reference material, gathered using strictly controlled conditions, and have developed theoretical rules that will aid users of this technique in the identification of the structures of the titled compound types. These compound types are widely encountered in bioactive plant components. The book will have appeal not only to academic chemists but also for example to biologists, food technologists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, the health supplements industry and the colourant industry. To our knowledge this is the first book of its kind to present and interpret a compilation of actual spectra of a series of authentic compounds, measured under identical and defined conditions that practitioners can use for direct comparison with their own data.

    Description: Urban heritage took four hundred years to establish itself as a cultural asset to be safeguarded and evolved along an historicalsocial process, rooted in the idea that urban sets and monumental architecture are part of the same category of historical values. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the notion of heritage stretched up and reached an urban dimension, but its social and political understanding did not release itself from theories and practices of intervention and safeguard action established within the architectural dimension from which came from. Aiming to contain change, they continue to resist to accept that change it is part of the nature of cities and to integrate it into the very meaning of the urban dimension of heritage. After all, of what do we talk about when we talk about urban heritage? Arising from various stimuli, this question guided the texts gathered here. They were written with different disciplinary perspectives because the measure that differentiates the urban dimension of heritage and architectural dimension is not metric or geometric. It is ontological and can only be understood in an integrated manner. In development, of course.

    Description: The treatise De esu carnium (On eating of flesh) came to us in the form of two logoi, with multiple lacunae, especially in the second logos. By recovering themes already developed by the Pythagorean doctrine, by Xenocrates, by Theophrastus or by the Stoics, Plutarch argues about the nature of living beings, within the scope of the relationship between man and animal. Like other treatises of the corpus plutarcheum, such as Bruta animalia ratione uti (The animals are rational), better known as Gryllus, or De sollertia animalium (On the intelligence of animals), the narrative is developed around questions related to the nature and psychology of animals, such as the possibility that virtue and reason exist in them. Plutarch defends the philanthropy and the generosity with which all living beings should be treated, thus opposing simple utilitarianism or the problematic principle of necessity. Being one of the zoological treatises, De esu carnium is also a rhetorical text, because Plutarch constructs, in opposition to the Stoics, an argumentative theory that supports the idea that eating meat is παρὰ φύσιν (‘against nature’).

All problems developed are aimed at biomedical applications, and assist in the practical comprehension of the same themes presented in the book Biophysics Medical, authored by João José Pedroso de Lima, also published by the Coimbra University Press and representing the recommended book for the discipline. In fact, the theoretical explanations are even referred to this book. In all chapters there are problems resolved and commented, other problems for which solutions are present and yet another type that are proposed problems, but no solution presented. We hope that this book will be a good helper for the study of biophysics.
