Beschreibung: The zooplankton and macrobenthic communities of Lake Victoria were sampled by lift net and Ponar grab, respectively. The zooplankton comprised copepods and cladocerans, rotifers and aquatic insect larvae. Most taxa exhibited wide distribution in the lake, with the exception of rotifers which were rare in deep offshore waters. The main components in the macro-benthos were chaoborid and chironomid larvae and molluscs. Caridina nilotica (Roux) and other groups were rare in the samples. Zooplankton density ranged from 100000 or more to 4 million ind. m2 and increased from the shallow inshore to deep offshore waters. Numerical dominance of cyclopoids and nauplius larvae was a common feature at all stations sampled. Most macrobenthic taxa were also widely distributed, although chaoborid and chironomid larvae were rare in the samples. Rastrineobola argentea (Pellegrin) and larval Lates niloticus (L.) ate mainly cyclopoid copepods, while cichlids showed a strong preference for adult insects. High ecological stability of the cyclopoids, and the zooplankton community in general, despite radical ecosystem changes in recent years, coupled with what appears to be high predation pressure, offers good prospects for the pelagic fishery in the lake.

Beschreibung: Size at first maturity, breeding periods and condition factor were determined for the small pelagic cyprinid Rastrineobola argentea (Pellegrin) in the Jinja waters of Lake Victoria in 1996-1997. Females showed a reduced size at maturity compared to ten years earlier when exploitation of the species was minimal. The males, however, have changed little. Although the species breeds throughout the year, two breeding peaks were observed during the drier months of August and December-January. Minimal breeding was observed in the rainy months of April-May and October-November. Fish from the open water station at Bugaia showed a higher proportion of breeding individuals than those from inshore areas. The mean monthly condition factor of fish from Napoleon Gulf confirmed breeding peaks obtained from examination of gonad development.

Beschreibung: The Lake Victoria fish fauna was dominated by cichlids before the establishment of the exotic species Oreochromis niloticus (L.) and Latus niloticus (L.). With the alterations in the ecology of Lake Victoria, changes may be expected to occur in the population dynamics of the fish species. In two zones of Lake Victoria, the size structure, distribution and abundance, condition factors, length-weight relationship and sex ratios of O. niloticus were determined. Larger fish were found in zone II than in zone III, where very few larger fish were recorded. More O. niloticus were caught in zone III, especially in Itome Bay, than in zone II but catch by weight was greater in zone II. More males than females were encountered in both zones. Oreochromis niloticus had similar condition factors in both zones.

Beschreibung: The zooplankton community of the littoral zone of Nyanza Gulf, Lake Victoria, was studied between June 1998 and June 1999 to identify and quantify various zooplankton groups, and investigate the interactions that occur between them and the littoral fish through the food chain. Zooplankton samples were collected from five stations using a 83 micro-m mesh size plankton net hauled vertically through the water column. Fish samples were obtained by beach seine, except at Gingra (May 1999), where trawl samples were used. Gut/stomach analysis was carried out on the three major commercial species, Lates niloticus (L.), Oreochromis niloticus (L.) and Rastrineobola argentea (Pellegrin).

Beschreibung: Ihale is a large landing site lying approximately 65 km. from Mwanza along the main Mwanza-Musoma highway. Ihale Beach was selected as a potential candidate for the 3-beaches study because of its proximity to Mwanza, and hence suitability for frequent monitoring; and because it is served by a road accessible during the rainy seasons. As with the first training Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) on Kiumba Beach on Kenya's Rusinga Island, the objectives with this PRA were as follows: (a) To identify and understand Ihale's community-based organizations and institutions which have a role in the lake's fishery. (b) To consider the key issues which arise from this study for the involvement of communities and community-based organizations and/or institutions such as those at Ihale Beach, in the co-management of Lake Victoria's fishery.

Beschreibung: This paper comprises part of the so-called "3-beaches Survey" of the LVFRP. In Tanzania, this study has developed to examine two landing sites (Mwasonge and Ihale), and to chart the progress of the newly established Beach Management Units (BMU) at each beach, comparing one BMU against the other. The over-arching objective of this survey was to develop an understanding of the context in which Mwasonge's fishery exists. The study does so by examining the community's history, culture and beliefs, various other socio-cultural factors, their resources, society and economy, wealth and the community's perceptions of wealth. Importantly, the survey examines the community's institutions and its perceptions of fishing rules and changes within the fishery. All of these facets of community life are examined with the use of participatory Rural Appraisal tools, and the images that the study generated are reproduced herein.

Beschreibung: The present work is now concentrated mainly on the Tilapia fishery. As a result of past experience it is easier to direct efforts in a way likely to give useful results. Work on the Tilapia is now beyond the purely exploratory stage and these fishing experiments are being carried but in areas which are known to contain large numbers of Tilapia. Nets of different mesh size are being used in order to catch all stages of these fish. These nets are being fished at the surface and at the bottom, close to the shore and further out. The data collected should provide more precise information regarding the periodic migration, both vertical and horizontal, of these fish, a better understanding of their life history and breeding habits, and indicate' the potential possibilities of this fishery. These data should explain the variation in numbers of fish caught by Africans during different months of the year; they should also make it possible to determine more exactly the best type of net for use in this particular fishery.

Beschreibung: This survey of the fisheries of Lake Rukwa, Tanganyika, describes results obtained during 1963-1964, and includes comparative material given by previous workers, in particular surveys conducted in 1936 by Ricardo and, in 1946 by Swynnerton. Data is given on the general hydrology of the Lake including chemical analyses, seasonal and annual fluctuations of volume. Cyclical variations of lake level occur every 20/30 years and the level now reaching a new maximum is expected to fall again during the next decade. The record of fish species from the Rukwa basin is enlarged by 3 genera: Polypterus, Protopterus and Chiloglanis; a summary of the biology and commercial exploitation of 20 species of fish is given. An historical account of the fish production from the lake and its subsequent marketing concludes that in 1963/64 some 5,328 tons of dried fish products are marketed annually; between 10-6;10 of this trade is directed towards the Rhodesias and the remainder is absorbed within Tanganyika. The state of the indigenous fishing enterprise is discussed, and for the improvement of the industry recommendations are given that the marketing of fish products should be immediately investigated and encouraged both abroad and within, Tanganyika. Further suggestions include the improvement of water-transport on the lake, the development of improved fishing-craft, fishing-methods, processing methods and further investigation of the biology of the fish-fauna.

Theresults were rather discouraging in that the figures obtained for stockdensities were definitely very low. It was felt that the major weaknessof the operations was the trawl net but as it was the only net availableand neither of the authors were expert on the design and constructionof more suitable nets, this particular net had to be used.

Beschreibung: Fisheries continue to be important in the national economy, especially as anexport commodity. Fish exports increased from 15,876 tonnes valued at 34.4million US$ in 2000 to 28,153 tonnes valued at 79.0 million US$ in 2001.Consequently information for sustainable exploitation and management of fishstocks is a priority. In order to fulfill this requirement, FIRRI has beenimplementing two research projects. The first project focuses on sustaining andincreasing capture fisheries production through management of fish stocks, biodiversity and environment of aquatic systems. The second project focuses onincreasing fish production through improved fry production and pondmanagement and feeding of cultured species.

Beschreibung: About 18% of Uganda’s surface area is covered with water from which about300,000 metric tonnes of fish are produced. Fish are currently the second mostimportant export commodity generating approximately US$100 million annually. Fish provides 50% of protein diet for the 20 million people translating into per capita consumption of 12 kg. Close to the production system, this figure rises to 50 – 100 kg. It is estimated that fishery-related activities employ at least one million people countrywide (i.e. 5% of the population).Fish exports to regional markets are worth at least US $ 20 million annually. Fishflesh contains an anticholesterol which assists in reducing heart diseases. Somefishes are of medicinal value e.g. haplochromines (Nkejje) are used to treat measles. Most of the fish in Uganda is got from lakes Victoria, Kyoga, Albert and Albert Nile, Edward and George production systems as well as from the 160 minor lakes and rivers and the associated wetland systems. Capture fisheries based in these systems contribute up to 99% of the fish production in Uganda but aquaculture is also picking up. The fishing industry employs up to one million Ugandans

Beschreibung: The purpose of this output was to use the results of the baseline and participatory diagnostics analysis to develop alternative innovations for agricultural production, natural resource management and food security. The farming systems in the project areas were analysed to identify the innovations that communities had been using for agricultural production, natural resource management and food security. The innovative strategies were examined for their contribution to sustainable agriculture, food security and natural resource management. Comparative analysis of the agricultural productivity, food security and natural resource management in the different areas where the innovations have been put in place was undertaken. The best practices would be identified, which should be scaled-up, modified orsustained. The willingness and perceptions of the farmers to adopt the innovations would then be assessed.

Beschreibung: Two species of the genus Tilapia occur naturally in Lake Victoria. Of these the most abundant and therefore the most important economically, is T. esculenta GRAHAM, and it is, for these reasons that more information is available concerning this species than the related T. variabilis BOULENGER. Thus LOWE (MCCONNELL) (1956) who was the first to make a serious study of the Tilapia species of the lake since the pioneering survey of GRAHAM (1929), dealt in considerable detail with T. esculenta but treated T. variabilis much less fully. Later studies (GARROD 1959) have also been concentrated on T. esculenta. Because of a relaxation in certain areas' of net-size regulations (discussed below) T. variabilis has recently assumed greater economic importance than was the case when restrictions were imposed, and this had called for further study of its general biology and the possible effects of commercial exploitation. The following account represents a preliminary contribution to the information required, and deals almost entirely with observations made in the northern waters of the lake and particularly in the vicinity of Jinja (Uganda).

Beschreibung: The study is prompted by the poverty that persisted among the fishing communities of lake victoria at time of considerable cash inflow into the fisheries development of fish processing industry. There has been need for understanding of the poverty and what strategies would be most appreciate for it's reduction. This study has attempted to respond to the needby identifying the nature and distribution of the poverty within the fisheries lake victoria,Uganda, the factor responsible for itand the options for poverty reduction intervention. The study examined the global and regional perspectives of poverty and wealth distribution, noting that wide disparities existed between the developed and the developing world and also between the developing countries themselves. A historical review of development policies and strategies revealed that while successive strategies were able to contribute to growth, their achievement towards poverty alleviation were less than satisfactory, hence the need forcontinually developing new strategies.A background to Uganda’s society and economy is provided, examining the demographic, political, environmental and economic conditions of the country. Uganda’s developmentstrategies are reviewed, highlighting the role of the Poverty Eradication Action Plan, Uganda’s main strategy for implementing the policy of poverty reduction and wealthdistribution. At the agricultural sector level, the Plan for the Modernisation of Agriculture has been formulated, followed by the National Fisheries Policy, aimed at providing a policy framework for the management and development of the fisheries. An appropriate definition of poverty was formulated, considered relevant to the situation ofLake Victoria. The dimensions of poverty included inadequate basic necessities, low education and health achievements, a sense of insecurity and exposure to risk. The research methodology was enhanced by the examination of the Lélé Model of the Poverty–Environmental Degradation problem, the World Bank Model of Poverty Causation and thesubsequent Lake Victoria Model developed in this study. It has provided a plan for the research, the consideration of criteria and a data collection plan. The data collectioninstruments included secondary data search, key informant interviews and a sample survey based on a structured questionnaire. The study identified all the four dimensions of poverty in the fisheries, provided poverty profiles with respect to the different activities, groups of people and regions in the fisheries, based on consumption poverty. Among the people identified to be in poverty were the fishing labourers, fishers of Oreochromis niloticus and those operating with non-powered boats. In the post-harvest fisheries, large proportions of processors involved in salting and sun-drying, market stall and bicycle traders were in the poverty category. The ethnic groups most affected included the Samia, Basoga and Bakenye while the Districts of Jinja, Bugiri and Busia had the highest proportions of fishers in the poverty category. With respect to the other dimensions of poverty, the study showed that educational achievement was low within the fishing communities. The health status was poor, due mainly to the prevalence of malaria, diarrhoea, bilharzia and HIV/AIDS. There was a sense of insecurity within certain sections of the fishing community, due to leadership weaknesses within the local as well as the Government institutions. Some community members operated in a state of risk because they were vulnerable to episodes of income, health and education. The causes of poverty in fisheries included weaknesses within the institutional and social environment, limitations in the technology available to the poor, resource degradation and unfavourable economic factors. The recommendations of the study for poverty reduction included strengthening of policies, developing links, improving capacities and increasing resources, to be applied at the levels of Central Government, Local Government and of the community. In view of the achievements of the methodology used on this study, involving reference to the models, it is recommended that future research should build upon this model approach, as it will continue to produce results, especially when attempting to forecast changes relating to interventions.

Beschreibung: Fish is currently one of the two most important agricultural export commodities from Uganda with factory-processed fish exported mainly to Europe, South East Asia and the Middle East worth at least USD 100 m annually. Regional exports are probably of similar significance. All recorded fish exports rely heavily (95%) on factory-processed Nile perch with the Nile tilapia increasingly entering the export market chain. Regional fish exports are more diversified in terms of species and include Nile tilapia, Nile perch, "mukene", Tiger fish and "Angara", the last two fished from Lake Albert. Regional fish destinations include Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan, DR Congo and some parts of Central Africa. Internal consumption relies on subsistence to semi-commercial fishes for a variety and species dominated by Nile tilapia

Beschreibung: The status of fish stocks in a water body at any one time is a function of several factors affecting the quantity of fish in that water body. These include:a) Total number (abundance) and biomass (weight) present,b) Growth (size and age),c) Recruitment (the quantity offish entering the fishery) including reproduction,d) Mortality which is caused by fishing or natural causes.Other indirect factors of major importance to the status of the stocks include productionfactors (water quality and availability of natural food for fish), the life history parameters ofthe different species making up the stocks (e.g. sex ratios, condition of the fish, reproductivepotential (i.e. fecundity) etc). Changes in fish stocks do occur when any of the above listedfactors directly influence aspects of growth, reproduction and mortality and therefore, numbers and standing stock (biomass).

Beschreibung: This report presents findings of the CAS conducted in the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria in May 2011. The results of the previous eleven CASs conducted under the IFMP of the LVFO programme in July, August, September and November 2005; in March, August and December 2006; in March and August 2007; in February and December 2008; and March 2010 are included to show the emerging trends. The report also presents annual catch estimates for the Ugandan part of the lake from 2005 to 2011.Through these CASs, information is building up to show the emerging picture of fish production in the Ugandan waters of the lake. Similar surveys are conducted in the Kenyan and Tanzanian parts of the lake, which provide the lake wide perspective of fisheries production but this time not simultaneously as under the LVFO effort due to different sources and timing of funding. These data can now be utilised together with other Resource and Socio-economic Monitoring survey data for a stock assessment of the lake to provide a firm basis for planning and management of the fisheries resources.

Beschreibung: Lake Albert and Albert Nile are a major source of fisheries resources sustaining the riparian communities in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Like all shared bodies of Uganda Lake Albert and Albert Nile fisheries are faced with immense exploitation pressure one time described as the tragedy of the commons. In Uganda, the lake is shared by five riparian districts namely: Buliisa, Bundibugyo, Hoima, Kibaale and Nebbi. The lake covers a total estimated surface area of 5,270 square kilometers with approximately 60% within Ugandan waters. It is located in the western part of the great rift-valley at an altitude of 618 m above Sea level. The central parts of the lake are characterized by steep escarpments whereas the northern and southern parts lie in a plain of the rift valley. The plains are gently sloping, resulting in shallow swampy inshore waters in many places. The major inflowing rivers are the Semliki and Kafu in the south, and the Victoria Nile at the northern tip. The lake has a diverse fish fauna with a gradient of multi-species fisheries in different parts of the lake. The overall objective of the Frame Survey was to provide information on the facilities and services at landing sites and the composition, magnitude and distribution of fishing effort to guide development and management of the fisheries resources of Lake Albert and Albert Nile. The specific objectives were to provide information on:a) The number of fish landing sites;b) The facilities available at the fish landing sites to service the sector including accessibility;c) The service providers especially fisheries staff at fish landing sites;d) The number of fishers;e) The number and types of fishing crafts and their mode of propulsion;f) The number, types and sizes of fishing gears used on the lake and their mode of operation.

Beschreibung: A Catch Assessment Surveys (CAS) with the overall objective of generating information on the fish production and commercial value of the fisheries of Lake Albert and Albert Nile system was implemented by the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NAFIRRI) in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Resources (DFR), Local Government staff (FOs) and BMU members at selected landing sites on Lake Albert (12 landing sites) and Albert Nile (26 landing sites) in July 2012.A total 622 and 313 boat days on Lake Albert and Albert Nile respectively were sampled for a period of 9 days. Results indicate an annual landing of 151,600 and 5,900 tonnes (t) of fish with an estimated beach value of 122.5 and 14 Billion (UShs) from Lake Albert and Albert Nile respectively. Over 80% of the catch from Lake Albert comprised the small pelagic species; Neobola bredoi (Muziri) and Brycinus nurse (Ragoogi) followed by Nile perch (6%). However, due to low market value of the small fishes and the high prices attached to Nile perch for industrial processing and export market, the contribution of the latter to beach value rose to 34% of the total. The contribution of the light fishery based on small pelagic species (B. nurse and N. bredoi) are insignificant on Albert Nile. Even if the small pelagic species may be present in the river system, a light fishery based on these two is yet to be developed. Proportionally, Albert Nile still remain a multispecies fishery with over 20 fish species harvested commercially. Interestingly, the Albert Nile fishery still remains primitive with simple crafts and gears (mainly dugout canoes, traps, and gillnets). This could suggest that the more developed the system becomes the higher the level of transformation in its fisheries leading to simplification, characterized by reduction in multispecies nature and dominance of few species.Illegal gears especially undersized gillnet of mesh size less than 4 inches were the most dominant in the Lake Albert and Albert Nile fisheries. They captured large quantities of immature fish particularly when used to target Nile perch, Bagrus, Nile tilapia, and large Barbus spp. Their impact when used to target the smaller species (Ragoogi, Angara & Ngasia) is yet to be evaluated. A specific study to analyze selectivity and impacts of these nets is a recommended. However, the dominance of 1.5” mesh sizes especially on Albert Nile to target Angara, Ngassia and Barbus, is definitely destructive to their fisheries and should be checked forthwith. In addition, there is an emerging fishing method locally referred to as “Salsio or Luzira” whereby fishers stay on the lake from 3 days up to 2 weeks without returning to the landing site. They carry with them food and salt for processing the catches on the lake, and in the case of Albert Nile on make shift shelters on islands and in the game park. They normally use gillnets of 3-3½ inch mesh size and caught mainly Nile perch & Bagrus (Pethi & Munama). On return they land several tons of fish. Most of these Catches are not captured in the estimates presented in our analyses since we target daily fishing boats. The possible impacts of this fishing method should be studied and appropriate action recommended.

Beschreibung: The methods of estimating codend selectivity for alternatehauls are briefly described and applied to Bagrus docmac (forskahl) data from Lake Victoria. Certain inconsistencies are noted and it is postulated that they may be due to differential escapement of larger Bagrus docmacthrough the trawl meshes when the different codends were fitted. The calculated 50% selection lengths yielded a fair regression on measured weigh give a fork length selection factor of 2.33, consistent with data from the smallest codend mesh size used. The implications of the findings are briefly discussed in relation to the proposed Haplochromis trawl fishery 1971.

Beschreibung: One of the avenues through which the Government objective of povertyeradication in Uganda can be achieved is Fisheries development andmanagement. Up to 20% of Uganda’s surface area is covered by aquaticsystems i.e. lakes, rivers, streams and swamps and to a large extent, all theseare interconnected. The large lakes: Victoria, Albert, Kyoga, George and Edwardare sites of the more important commercial fisheries, but even the smaller waterbodies, rivers (e.g. the Rivers Nile and Kagera) and the surrounding swampsprovide sources of livelihood to rural areas.Fish is an important source of high quality food, employment revenue and iscurrently the second most important export commodity next to coffee generatingapproximately US $ 80 million annually. Fish exports to regional markets areworth at least US $ 20 million annually. Fish flesh is rich in proteins, which aresuperior to those of beef and poultry. Fish flesh contains an anticholesterolwhich assists in reducing heart diseases. Some fishes are of medicinal valuee.g. haplochromines (Nkejje) are used to treat measles. Most of the fish inUganda is got from lakes Victoria, Kyoga, Albert and Albert Nile, Edward andGeorge production systems as well as from the 160 minor lakes and rivers andthe associated wetland systems. Capture fisheries based in these systemscontribute up to 99% of the fish production in Uganda but aquaculture is alsopicking up. The fishing industry employs up to one million Ugandans

It is estimated that fishery-related activities employ at leastone million people countrywide (i.e. 5% of the population).Fish is an important source of high quality food, employment, and revenueand it is currently the second most important export commodity next to coffeegenerating approximately US $ 80 million annually. Fish exports to regionalmarkets are worth at least US $ 20 million annually. Fish flesh is rich inproteins, which are superior to those of beef and poultry. Fish flesh containsan anticholesterol which assists in reducing heart diseases. Some fishes areof medicinal value e.g. haplochromines (Nkejje) are used to treat measles. Most of the fish in Uganda is got from lakes Victoria, Kyoga, Albert and AlbertNile, Edward and George production systems as well as from the 160 minorlakes and rivers and the associated wetland systems. Capture fisheries basedin these systems contribute up to 99% of the fish production in Uganda butaquaculture is also picking up. The fishing industry employs up to one millionUgandans.

Beschreibung: The fisheries of Lakes Mutanda and Mulehe during 1998/9 were mainly at subsistence scale and only few fishers operated at irregular intervals. The commercial catch records between 1963 to 1999 showed that Lake Mulehe was landing more fish than Lake Mutanda despite the fact that Lake Mutanda (26.4 km2) was bigger than Lake Mulehe (4.11 cm2). The constant decline of catches was due to irregular restocking and applying low stocking densities of fry. However, restocking should consider using species that withstand low temperature (15-240C) in the district. These include Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia), Macropterus salmoides (Black bass), and Cyprinus carpio (Common carp). Most of these species have either disappeared or declined to very low levels. Due to lack of commercial fish species for harvest, the fishers by 1998/9 resorted to harvesting the haplochromines, Clarias carsoni and edible frogs (Xenopus kigesiensis) as alternative resources. Experimental studies have shown the need and techniques to enhance fish production on these two lakes.

Beschreibung: Tullow Oil plc is to launch an onshore Early Production System (EPS) of oil drilling rated at 4,000 barrels of oil per day by 2009. The location of the EPS is in the Kaiso-Tonya area of Block 2 Oil Exploration Zone along Lake Albert within the Albertine graben. Tullow Oil plc contracted Environmental Resources Management (ERM) Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd in conjunction with Environmental Assessment Consult Limited (EACL) to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for pre-construction and operation of the proposed EPS. ERM in association with EACL requested National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) to conduct a baseline survey of water quality and invertebrates in River Hohwa. This study was requested as part of an earlier baseline survey conducted at the Kaiso-Ngassa spit oil exploration area in Block 2. It was conducted at five selected sites (Fig. 1 & Table 1) within the Hohwa River basin in the Kaiso-Tonya Exploration Area 2. The study was pertinent because the targeted oil wells for EPS are upstream this river which drains the Kaiso-Ngassa valley into Ngassa lagoon.

Beschreibung: Following the commencement of construction works of a 250 MW hydropower plant at Dumbbell Island in the Upper Victoria Nile in September 2007, BEL requested NaFIRRI to conduct continuous monitoring of fish catches at two transects i.e. the immediate upstream transect of the project site (Kalange-Makwanzi) and the immediate downstream .transect (Buyala-Kikubamutwe). The routine monitoring surveys were designed to be conducted twice a week at each of the tWo transects. It was anticipated that major immediate impacts were to occur during construction, and these needed to be known by BEL as part of a mitigation strategy. For example, the construction of it cofferdam could be accompanied by rapid changes in water quality and quantity downstream of the construction. These changes in turn could affect the fish catch and would probably be missed by the quarterly monitoring already in place. Therefore, a major cbjective of the more regular and rapid monitoring was to discern immediate impacts of construction activities by focusing on selected water quality parameters (total suspended solids, water conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH) and fish catch characteristics (total catch, catch rates and value of the catch)

Beschreibung: A key aspect in the approval to develop a 250 MW hydropower project on the Upper Victoria in Uganda was to include an environmental monitoring component during construction and after the construction phase. Baseline information on the aquatic ecosystem and fisheries of the Upper Victoria Nile was part of the EIA submitted to NEMA by AES Nile Power during 2000. Subsequently, this information was updated in April 2006. Fisheries are important socio-economically and in terms of the high fish species diversity in aquatic ecosystems in Uganda. Therefore, the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) has been part of these developments providing specific inputs related to the fisheries and aquatic ecosystem of the Upper Victoria Nile to EIA of hydropower schemes in the country. As aquatic organisms of environmental and socio-economic importance, different species of fish and fish populations are effected by various factors mostly exploitation.

Beschreibung: The material described in this paper was collected during a survey of the fish and fisheries of the Malagarazi River and swamps carried out in August and September, 1952, by members of the East African Fisheries Research Organisation and the Inland Fisheries Officer (Kigoma). Previous records of Cichlid fishes from the Malagarazi River have been published by David (1937) and Poll (1946 and 1948). These included Haplochromis burtoni (Ganither)'and H. malagaraziensis David from the upper reaches of the river, and Tilapia karomo Poll from the delta. The present collection was made at Uvinza and Iragala on the open river and at Katare on one of the numerous swamps. Besides the one new species described below, Horei burtoni and H. horei were collected at Irangala, and a species of Serranochromis at Uvinza and Katare. Two apparently new species of Haplochromis were collected in all three areas and will be described at a later date.

Beschreibung: The parasitic Copepod Lernaea bistricornis Harding was described by Harding (1950) from a single specimen found in Lake Tanganyika on the endemic Cichlid fish Cardio pharynx schoutedeni POLL. No further specimens were known until when several individuals were collected in the same lake by Dr. G. MARLIER from the endemic Cichlid fishes Cyathopharynx Furcifer (Boulenger) and Callochromis pleurospilus (Boulenger). These records indicate that L. bistricornis has fairly wide host preferences, at least within the fainily Cichlidae, and suggest that, like its relative L. lophaira Harding which parasitizes the Cichlid fishes of L. Nyasa, it is capable of parasitizing any member of this group within its range of distribution.

Beschreibung: Implications of the fish export trade on the people and the fisheries resource of LakeVictoria, Uganda were examined. Eight fish processing factories and ninety fishers wereanalyzed in terms of socio-economic characteristics of fishers and the economic characteristics of fish factories. Results indicated that industrial fish processors in Uganda are presently the main link between the artisanal fisher-folk and the overseas export markets. Their entry into the market has stabilized and expanded the fisher-folk market and average earnings. Fishers attributed improvement in incomes and living standards (76%) to positive changes in the fish market (78%) in the last 5 years (1994-1999). Ugandan fisher-folk communities are not seriously affected by the Nile perch exports (73%) because they normally have easy access to cheap fish at prices much less than urban prices and; depend mainly on alternative fish species of less export value. The price of Nile perch influences positively the price of Tilapia

Beschreibung: The construction of several barrages in order to develop the hydroelectric and irrigation potential of the Tana river has been proposed and the probable effects of these developments upon the fish and fisheries of the area' has been investigated. Briefly in the highest reaches the sport fishery will be unaffected, in the middle reaches the sparse subsistence fisheries will be only slightlyinconvenienced but in the terminal reaches of the river the subsistence and commercial fishing enterprises are expected to be seriously reduced by the progressive re-regulation of river-flow. However each new dam will support a new and productive reservoir fishery and with proper development the annual yield of fish from the Tana basin is expected to increase considerably.

Beschreibung: The Nabugabo lakes are an important source of affordable protein food inthe form of fish, income, water for domestic and commercial purposes(aquaculture farm and Hotels), handcraft materials (mats, hats, roof thatch) andfishing floats and rafts. Nabugabo lakes provide employment, income and exportearnings to Uganda that flow from the act of harvesting the fish. In Uganda thefisheries sector directly employs 350,000 people and indirectly 1.2 million people. In 2005, it is estimated that about 370,000 mt fish export (97-98% Nile perch)earned Uganda US $ 143 Million up from US $ 103 million in 2004 .and up fromUS $ 45 million in 1996. , making it almost become the first non' traditional exportcommodity. The Nabugabo lakes are also import for cultural values and fishspecies from these lakes are important in evolutionary studies. The fishery sectoris therefore very important in Uganda's socio-economic life. Despite the abovevalues to the communities and global biodiversity roles, the amount of fish caughtand the number fishing fleets operating on the Nabugabo lakes to guidemanagement of the lake are lacking. The fishery that exists in these lakes islargely for subsistence and commercial purposes specific for Lake Nabugabobased on introduced species (Nile perch and Nile Tilapia). The fish is caughtusing mainly gill nets and long line hooks.

The objective of the survey was to provide biomass estimates and distribution of the two main commercial species Nile Perch (above 10cm TL) AND Dagaa (Rastrineobola agentea). The rest of the species are grouped as haplochromines and others.Acoustic surveys are conducted biannually during the January/ February period when the lake is thermally stratified and during August/September period when the lake is mixed,to capture the differences in stock distribution during the two main seasons which influence fish distribution in Lake Victoria. So far, eight survey have been carried out using the same boat (R.V. Victoria Explorer) and equipment(SIMRAD EY500 echo-integrator),but with changes in survey design and data processing protocols.Environment parameters are also studied to monitor the status and understand how physical, chemical and biological processes interact and influences fisheries production.

The rate of growth will likely be even greater in many African nations, yet food supplies in these countries especially of essential animal proteins, are even not; inadequate Clearly increased production of food for domestic consumption must become a high- prioritydevelopment goal. The inland fisheries of Africa will play an increasinglyimportant role in augmenting protein supplies. In 1970, production of the inland fisheries was already-about 1.4 million metric tons, and had increased some 71 per cent in the previous six years. With further development and more affective fishery management a two-fold increase 1n output over the present level can reasonably be expected.Effective management of the fisheries at optimum exploitation levels end development of under utilized fish resources will neccessite major improvement in the stastistical systems employed to produce information on the fish stocks and fisheries. More reliable and detailed information on the catch, effort and other important aspect of the fishing enterprises will be required.

Beschreibung: In February 1996 "A Strategy for the Management of Salmon in England and Wales" was launched by the then National Rivers Authority. The strategy concentrates on four main objectives for the management of salmon fisheries in England and Wales. These are primarily aimed at securing the well being of the stock but in doing so will strive to improve catches and any associated economic returns to the fisheries: (i) Optimise the number of salmon returning to homewater fisheries. (ii) Maintain and improve the fitness and diversity of salmon stocks. , (iii) Optimise the total economic value of surplus stocks. (iv) Ensure necessary costs are met by beneficiaries. These four objectives will be addressed through local Salmon Action Plans (SAPs) which will be produced for each of the principle salmon rivers in England and Wales by the year 2001. Each plan will review the status of the stock and the fisheries on a particular river, seek to identify the main factors limiting performance, draw up and cost a list of options to address these, and, consult 0with local interest groups. This report is the draft version of the Salmon Action Plan for the River Lune.

Beschreibung: This report summarises the findings of a series of electric-fishing surveys carried out at four sites on the River Ribble from September 1997 to September 1998. The aims of these surveys were to assess the impact on juvenile salmonids of a pollution incident involving Synthetic Pyrethrin (SP) that occurred near High Birkwith I (SD 802 767) in September 1997.One of these sites was 2.65km upstream of the pollution whilst the remaining three were at varying distances downstream. Data was collected during surveys of the River Ribble in 1992, 97 and 98. The 1997 and 1998 surveys were carried out specifically to monitor for any possible effects of the SP discharge.Data are shown as grades derived from the National Fisheries Classification scheme (NFC). Results are given for the four salmonid life stages; 0+ trout, 〉0+ trout, 0+ salmon, 〉0+ salmon and also Total Salmonids.
