    Beschreibung: ste libro es expresión de las investigaciones realizadas por seis integrantes de la Línea Contextos, Prácticas Políticas y Políticas Públicas como parte del Programa Posdoctoral en Ciencias Sociales, Niñez y Juventud. Los trabajos que componen el segundo libro colectivo de esta línea fueron producidos entre el 2014 y el 2017 y abordan diferentes dimensiones de las vidas de niñas, niños y jóvenes de América Latina desde una perspectiva situada que, siendo rigurosa, asume el compromiso intelectual y político de aportar a la transformación de las condiciones en las que producen sus existencias. Si bien cada uno de los seis capítulos corresponde a investigaciones singulares llevadas a cabo por cada uno de los posdoctores en tres países de América Latina (Argentina, Brasil y Colombia), estos se alimentaron de los intercambios colectivos sostenidos en el espacio de trabajo que compartimos en la Línea del Posdoctorado. De esta manera, el libro puede leerse como el encuentro de seis textos con unidad y lógica en sí mismos, pero también como obra única en la que reverberan los diálogos sostenidos en el espacio común de trabajo que construimos en estos años. En este sentido, este texto es resultado de un proceso que demandó casi dos años de debates y reelaboraciones y que pasó por diversos momentos y circunstancias antes de que se hiciera posible su publicación. Agradecemos entonces la paciencia y la dedicación de las autoras —el azar o los procesos de igualdad de género quisieron que todas las autoras fueran mujeres— así como los comentarios y aportes de los otros colegas que integran la línea, cuyos trabajos ya han sido publicados o se editarán pronto. Asimismo, queremos agradecer al equipo de trabajo del posdoctorado que radica en el Centro de Estudios de Niñez y Juventudes (Cenju) del Cinde y la Universidad de Manizales (Sandra, Daniela, Julián), a los coordinadores de las otras líneas del programa (Toya, Patricia, Karina, Silvinha, José Manuel, Héctor Fabio, Fernanda, Myriam), a Sara Victoria Alvarado, a María Camila Ospina por aceptar con generosidad hacer el prólogo, a las instituciones coeditoras y, especialmente, a Lucía Rangel, quien compartió la coordinación de la línea junto a Pablo Vommaro hasta fines del 2016, momento en el que se incorporó Alejandra Barcala a este espacio. Este libro es también símbolo del trabajo que llevamos a cabo con Lucía y una bienvenida para Alejandra. La apuesta por publicar los capítulos en su idioma original (castellano o portugués) también es expresión de la vocación intercultural y latinoamericanista de esta obra. Los invitamos a compartir las páginas que siguen y a recorrer las experiencias de investigación y práctica intelectual que contienen. Esperamos que esta sea una manera de integrarse, al menos por algunos momentos, a la comunidad que constituimos en el Posdoctorado desde el 2010, que se potencia día a día con la publicación de obras como esta y con los ecos y debates que pueda generar.     Beschreibung: Este libro permite, entre otras cosas, acercarse a la mayor parte de los desarrollos, las tendencias y los intereses teóricos que ocupan actualmente a los cientistas sociales en América Latina. Es un mapa capaz de mostrar mucho de lo que se está haciendo en el campo de la teoría social, y capaz también de mostrar mucho de lo que queda por hacer. Uno de los rasgos más notables de este mapa es su pluralidad. Se constata aquí que las más diversas tradiciones de pensamiento transitan por nuestro continente, y que son reelaboradas por nuevas lecturas de un modo tan vital como riguroso y consistente. Queda por saber si este pluralismo existente se irá todavía ampliando, si llegará a albergar más cabalmente tradiciones no tradicionales de pensamiento. Es decir, si podrá abrirse con más fuerza a un diálogo con puntos de vista sobre lo social, lo político y lo cultural provenientes de las epistemes no occidentales, o no completamente occidentales, que habitan el sur global.

    Beschreibung: This open access book evaluates research quality, quality of teaching and the relationship between the two through sound statistical methods, and in a comparative perspective with other European countries. In so doing, it covers an increasingly important topic for universities that affects university funding. It discusses whether university evaluation should be limited to a single factor or consider multiple dimensions of research, since academic careers, teaching and awarding degrees are intertwined. The chapters included in the book evaluate teaching and research, also taking the gender dimension into account, in order to understand where and when gender discrimination occurs in assessment. Divided into five sections, the book analyses the administrative data on the determinants of career completion of university students; increasing precariousness of academic careers, especially of young researchers; methods designed to assess research productivity when co-authorship and team production are becoming the standard practice; and interrelations between students’ achievements and teachers’ careers driven by research assessment. It brings together contributions from a large group of economists, statisticians and social scientists working under a project sponsored by ANVUR, the Italian agency for the evaluation of teaching and research of academic institutions. From an international perspective, the findings in this book are particularly interesting because despite low tuition costs, tertiary education in Italy has relatively low enrolment rates and even lower completion rates compared to those in other European and American countries. This book is of interest to researchers of the sociology of education, education policy, public administration, economics and statistics of education, and to administrators and policy makers working in the area of higher education.

    Beschreibung: "Hemos organizado esta antología alrededor de cinco ejes temáticos que nos permiten establecer conversaciones cruzadas entre los ensayos incluidos y formular algunas tesis que claramente los enlazan y que asumimos como propias. Podríamos haber establecido muchas más relaciones entre ellos y articular otras tesis interpretativas, pero con ello escaparíamos los confines de un ensayo introductorio. Le dejamos a los amigos y amigas lectores el culminar una tarea que siempre permanecerá inconclusa. En todo caso, encontrarán a continuación una serie de relatos críticos a nuestra oficialidad y a los intereses que esta ha salvaguardado. Damos fe que la historia reciente, en buena medida, les ha dado la razón a estos pensadores. En Puerto Rico hemos gozado de una ventaja epistemológica que nos asigna un inusual grado de responsabilidad. Las causas de nuestra crisis no solo eran anticipables —mucho más previsibles que las azarosas rutas de los huracanes— sino que algunas nos fueron anunciadas desde hace medio siglo. Los que tuvimos el privilegio de ir a la universidad del estado —ahora, como todo, bajo asedio— pudimos leer y escuchar en sus aulas a algunos de estos autores, y a muchos otros que merecerían estar aquí. De todos aprendimos que a pesar de lo auspicioso que parecía el presente había encuadres narrativos plagados de ausencias, fallas sistémicas que atender, y nuevos rumbos que desde entonces no podían esperar.     Beschreibung: Los estudios sociales en ciencia y tecnología en América Latina cuentan ya con medio siglo de desarrollo en la región. El origen del campo en los años sesenta dotó de características propias que permanecieron, a lo largo de las décadas con diferentes niveles de intensidad, en el marco de nuevos modelos y formas de pensar el desarrollo y de afrontar las condiciones de pobreza y exclusión de nuestras sociedades. Una vez recorrida la etapa de profesionalización del campo –y en diálogo con la dinámica de construcción de estos estudios en los países del norte– se retomaron desde nuevas preguntas y perspectivas aquellas reflexiones iniciadas en los años sesenta, al tiempo que se generaron esfuerzos por construir miradas originales sobre los significados sociales, económicos y políticos de la ciencia y la tecnología. Así se construyeron enfoques y perspectivas analíticas que aprovechan los aportes del campo a nivel internacional y los alimentan con perspectivas regionales. Ciencia, tecnología y sociedad en América Latina está organizado en cinco secciones variadas y heterogéneas, referidas todas ellas a América Latina, en las que se discuten problemas sociales muy diversos. El rico caudal de estas investigaciones sostiene como objetivo común la superación del atraso y de la dependencia de nuestros países, y la búsqueda de estrategias adecuadas en pos de mejorar las condiciones de vida en la región. Con una perspectiva múltiple e interdisciplinar, investigadores jóvenes del continente muestran la riqueza y la relevancia de los estudios actuales en este campo.

    Beschreibung: This open access book analyses the global diffusion of social policy as a process driven by multiplex ties between countries in global social networks. The contributions analyze links between countries via global trade, colonial history, similarity in culture, and spatial proximity. Networks are viewed as the structural backbone of the diffusion process, and diffusion is anlaysed via several subfields of social policy, in order to interrogate which network dimensions drive this process. The focus is on a global perspective of social policy diffusion via networks, and it is the first book to explicitly follow this macro-quantitative perspective on diffusion at a global scale whilst also comparing different networks.     Beschreibung: This open access book shows how the adoption of global justice, such as eradication of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), has given rise to controversy, resistance, and transformation at the national, regional, and grass-roots levels in African and Asian countries where FGM/C has been practiced. It provides readers with up-to-date information about the effects of the campaign to eradicate FGM/C and the present situation of those countries, to which preceding books on FGM/C have scarcely referred. Adopting “zero tolerance” as a policy of eradication, WHO and other UN agencies have opposed any type of FGM/C, and many African countries have criminalized the practice. Although the campaign is based on the human rights discourse which is shared globally, the controversies concerning eradication of FGM/C on the national level and the responses of communities on the local level in those countries are diverse and complicated. Various actors such as NGOs, government officials, religious leaders, medical workers, and local inhabitants are embroiled and negotiate with each other concerning its eradication. With this book, readers are provided with an in-depth analysis of the complicated controversies and responses of local communities, referring to their particular historical and social backgrounds. The book provides two chapters on FGM/C in Asian countries, where not many studies have done yet. It also presents readers with a study of the arguments and responses to FGM/C of African immigrants by Australian health-care professionals as well as a study of male circumcision eradication campaigns, which have been carried on in tandem with FGM/C eradication campaigns but still not have been successful. With its many elaborate case studies, this book is highly recommended to readers who seek an in-depth and up-to-date integrated overview of the FGM/C studies as well as studies on the applicability of global justice to local communities.

En el 2015 un grupo de académicos y estudiantes puertorriqueños tuvieron la iniciativa de visitar Cuba, oportunidad en la que recibieron una serie de conferencias sobre una amplia gama de temas atinentes a la realidad cubana. En La Habana contaron con el apoyo de la Cátedra de Estudios del Caribe de la Universidad de La Habana. A esta se sumaron otras instituciones como el Instituto Superior de Relaciones Internacionales “Raúl Roa García". Fue una experiencia muy positiva para puertorriqueños y cubanos. Afortunadamente no quedó solo en interesantes conferencias e intercambios y visitas diversas. Más allá del enriquecimiento mutuo que significó el contacto directo entre boricuas y cubanos –que permitió conocernos mejor y constatar, una vez más, cuanto de común hay entre nosotros– nos lega esta interesante compilación de artículos.

    Beschreibung: This open access book deals with global sanitation, where SDG 6.2 sets a target of enabling access to sanitation services for all, but has not yet been achieved in low- and middle-income countries. The transition from the United Nations MDGs to the SDGs requires more consideration based on the socio-cultural aspects of global sanitation. In other words, equitable sanitation for those in vulnerable situations could be based on socio-cultural contexts. Sanitation is a system that comprises not only a latrine but also the works for the treatment and disposal of human waste. Sanitation systems do not function by themselves but have significance only through social management. The process of decision-making also largely depends on socio-cultural conditions, and the importance of sanitation needs to be socially acknowledged. The health benefits of sanitation improvement—among the significant contributions of sanitation—also need to be considered in the socio-cultural milieu. Further, the social-culture itself is affected, and potentially even created, by sanitation. In this context, more progress on the improvement of sanitation requires a more holistic approach across disciplines. In this book, we present the concept of the Sanitation Triangle, which considers the interconnections of health, materials, and socio-culture in sanitation, as a holistic approach, and the case studies based on the Sanitation Triangle by diverse disciplines such as Cultural Anthropology, Development Studies, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Science Communication. By the deep theoretical examinations and inter-dialogues between the different disciplines, this book explores the potentialities of inter-disciplinary studies on global sanitation.

COVID-19 crisis prompted the public authorities to rethink the use of public space in order to develop means of transport that are both efficient and adapted to the health context and their effects on cycling practices in Europe, North, and South America. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through policies analysis, mapping, and innovative qualitative analysis bridging video and interviews, how those new infrastructures and policies can be a trigger for change in a context of mobility transition. This book provides an important element on the way local authorities can act in a quicker and more agile way. While some decisions are specific to the context of the beginning of the pandemic, the analysis offers lessons on the way to implement the transition toward a low-carbon mobility, on the importance of processes based on trials and errors, on the political stakes of reallocating road space.

    Beschreibung: La lucha por la implementación del Acuerdo de Paz transcurre de manera simultánea en dos sentidos. Por una parte, como necesidad de superar y derrotar en forma definitiva las resistencias de sectores que liderados por las expresiones más extremistas de la derecha política buscan desconocer la realidad histórica y concreta del Acuerdo de Paz, en cuanto posibilidad de tramitar el conflicto social y d clase por la vía exclusivamente política. Pero, al mismo tiempo, por la otra, como necesidad también de una implementación integral, de construir la legitimidad de una concepción de la paz que trascienda la visión meramente pacificadora o gatopardista, es decir, que apunte a una paz que efectivamente posea los contenidos propios de la democracia verdadera y la justicia social en camino hacias las transformaciones más profundas de la sociedad colombiana. Y, por qué no decirlo, que se encauce hacia la superación definitiva del orden social vigente; aspiración que también se encontraba tanto en los orígenes como en la larga historia de la lucha guerrillera en Colombia.

    Beschreibung: This open access book explores commentaries on an influential text of pre-Copernican astronomy in Europe. It features essays that take a close look at key intellectuals and how they engaged with the main ideas of this qualitative introduction to geocentric cosmology. Johannes de Sacrobosco compiled his Tractatus de sphaera during the thirteenth century in the frame of his teaching activities at the then recently founded University of Paris. It soon became a mandatory text all over Europe. As a result, a tradition of commentaries to the text was soon established and flourished until the second half of the 17th century. Here, readers will find an informative overview of these commentaries complete with a rich context. The essays explore the educational and social backgrounds of the writers. They also detail how their careers developed after the publication of their commentaries, the institutions and patrons they were affiliated with, what their agenda was, and whether and how they actually accomplished it. The editor of this collection considers these scientific commentaries as genuine scientific works. The contributors investigate them here not only in reference to the work on which it comments but also, and especially, as independent scientific contributions that are socially, institutionally, and intellectually contextualized around their authors.

    Beschreibung: *THIS BOOK WILL SOON BECOME AVAILABLE AS OPEN ACCESS BOOK* This book is an excellent synthesis of the initial and continuing preparation for Mathematics Teaching in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, from which comparative analyses can be made that show similarities and differences, and highlight various perspectives. In August 2012, a workshop of the Capacity and Networking Project (CANP) of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) was held in Costa Rica. This CANP brought together for two weeks a group of 66 Mathematics educators, mathematicians, university administrators, and elementary and secondary teachers from Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Panamá and Costa Rica. The goal was to promote progress in Mathematics Education in the region; as such it was a unique experience in the region. One of the most important results of this event was the creation of the Mathematics Education Network of Central America and the Caribbean (REDUMATE). It was organized by persons associated with the Mathematics Education Reform Project in Costa Rica (responsible for the most outstanding and innovative curriculum reform in Latin America) and the Inter-American Committee on Mathematics Education (IACME), which is an official regional multinational organization affiliate of ICMI. This book brings to the international Educational Community an important collection of experiences and ideas in the Mathematics Education of four countries of a region within the heart of the American continent, a region that has been many times forgotten. The dissemination of these results can promote the search for international collaborative actions in a wider scale.

No hay como transigir frente al descalabro de la supuesta cooperacion internacional, la connivencia criminal de la elite haitiana y el sufrimiento sin fin de la mayoría de su poblacion. Se trata de un testimonio comprometido, escrito por alguien imbuido de la tenue esperanza de que puede contribuir a reducir el tiempo que falta para que el mundo y Haití encuentren otro camino, distinto al que recorrieron hasta ahora, en sus relaciones recíprocas.

Reúne artículos que presentan parte de los resultados de las investigaciones llevadas a cabo en Argentina, Brasil y Colombia en el marco del proyecto POLAME (Poverty, Language and Media –Pobreza, Lenguaje y Medios–) financiado por la cooperación noruega. Los autores pertenecen al equipo de este proyecto salvo el caso de Marcela Toro, articulista invitada. El objetivo del proyecto POLAME fue detectar las expresiones lingüísticas usadas en la prensa de cuatro países indo/latinoamericanos (Brasil, Argentina, Colombia y México), palabras, vocabulario, nociones, conceptos, atributos sobre la pobreza y sus representaciones, partiendo del supuesto de que, como formadora de opinión, la prensa hegemónica reproduce concepciones, creencias e ideologías sobre la pobreza.

Por el otro, avanzando en un modelo de gobernabilidad que sepa ampliar las bases del Estado sin coaptar el poder popular, en una dinámica que no es sencilla de alcanzar pero sobre la que se podrá sostener un programa de gobierno progresista que no traicione la voluntad y la capacidad de movilización de las bases.

    Beschreibung: This open access book offers an unprecedented analysis of child welfare schemes, situating them in the wider context of post-war policy debates about the care of children. Between 1945 and 1970, an estimated 3,500 children were sent from Britain to Australia, unaccompanied by their parents, through child migration schemes funded by the Australian and British Governments and delivered by churches, religious orders and charities. Functioning in a wider history of the migration of unaccompanied children to overseas British colonies, the post-war schemes to Australia have become the focus of public attention through a series of public reports in Britain and Australia that have documented the harm they caused to many child migrants. Whilst addressing the wide range of organisations involved, the book focuses particularly on knowledge, assumptions and decisions within UK Government Departments and asks why these schemes continued to operate in the post-war period despite often failing to adhere to standards of child-care set out in the influential 1946 Curtis Report. Some factors – such as the tensions between British policy on child-care and assisted migration – are unique to these schemes. However, the book also examines other factors such as complex government systems, fragmented lines of departmental responsibility and civil service cultures that may contribute to the failure of vulnerable people across a much wider range of policy contexts.

    Beschreibung: Esta edición se realiza en el contexto del Centenario de la Reforma Universitaria cordobesa de 1918 y del cincuentenario de los hechos de 1968: el Mayo Francés, el ’68 uruguayo, la passeata dos cen mil brasileña y la masacre de Tlatelolco. El año elegido constituye un ícono, donde el sentido común ha condensado toscamente la gran cantidad de movilizaciones estudiantiles inmediatamente anteriores y posteriores, como las ocurridas en Alemania Federal, Bélgica, Checoslovaquia, China, Corea, Egipto, España, Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos, Italia, Japón, Polonia, la Unión Soviética y Yugoslavia. En nuestro continente, además de los casos mencionados, también hubo grandes luchas estudiantiles en Argentina, Colombia y Chile, que aparecen en este volumen, y en Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Perú y Venezuela, que lamentablemente no cuentan con capítulos específicos en nuestro libro. Se trata de un libro verdaderamente colectivo, porque reunimos investigaciones con perspectivas teóricas y metodológicas diversas, sobre varios de los ciclos de movilización estudiantil más trascendentes de seis países latinoamericanos hacia fines de los ’60 y principios de los ’70, procesos a los que llamamos “los ‘68". Compartimos artículos realizados con el marco conceptual del marxismo y otros escritos desde las teorías de la acción colectiva; investigaciones que utilizaron como fuente principal los testimonios orales y otras que privilegiaron el registro hemerográfico, escritos de una densidad descriptiva notable y reflexiones conceptuales originales.     Beschreibung: La meta principal de este estudio es averiguar –siguiendo la teoría de Frantz Fanon a través de su pedagogía obrera– los "mecanismos" conceptuales que podrán servir para una "relectura" de los Movimientos Sociales, observando al proceso pedagógico de Haití, con vistas a su transformación social y económica. De esa forma, ante el cuadro de emergencias en el que se encuentra Haití, surgieron preguntas respecto de cuáles serían las tareas más osadas de un educador que acepta el desafío como su responsabilidad. Preguntas como ésta, entre otras, nos han acompañado en el día-a-día, a lo largo de la escritura de este libro. Sin duda, el repensar a Haití y sus procesos educativos, consiste en un gran desafío que no puede ser asumido de forma aislada, sino de forma colectiva.

    Beschreibung: In this chapter I have endeavoured to demonstrate the ways in which an approach that takes the emotions seriously might nuance and complicate our understandings of the history of pre-anaesthetic surgery. In general, historians have tended to focus on the operations of surgical dispassion, or what we might now term clinical detachment. What this research suggests, however, is that compassion and emotional expression played a surprisingly important role in shaping the cultures of early nineteenth-century operative surgery as well as the identities of its practitioners. In the decades immediately preceding the advent of anaesthesia, pain became a central concern of surgical discourse and the response to this concern was shaped by the cultures of sentiment and sensibility. However, this culture of compassion was no ‘natural’ reaction to a self-evident problem. Rather, it was a culturally and historically contingent phenomenon which could be harnessed to the ideologies and ambitions of medical reform. In the hands of men like John Bell and Thomas Wakley, the image of the surgeon as a man of refined and honest sentiment was linked to a critique of the medical and surgical ancien regime, providing an idealised representation of a more expert, meritocratic and altruistic profession.

    Beschreibung: En el marco de intensos cambios políticos y económicos, el salto de siglo trajo a Latinoamérica nuevas orientaciones en la gestión y negociación de las políticas sociales, además de consensos y conflictos en torno a las mismas. Sin abandonar del todo las medidas de corte liberal recomendadas por el Consenso de Washington, buena parte de los gobiernos de la región incluyeron en sus agendas objetivos de corte universalista, junto con la implementación de un conjunto de transformaciones (heterogéneas) que mantienen, consolidan o modifican procesos iniciados en los años ochenta del siglo pasado. Partiendo de este contexto, la presente obra colectiva del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Pobreza y Políticas Sociales de CLACSO, condensa sus preocupaciones sobre los retos que enfrenta América Latina para enfrentar los niveles de exclusión social que la caracterizan, a la vez que ensaya explicaciones sobre la incidencia de los ciclos económicos y políticos que afectan permanentemente su patrón de distribución de la riqueza, e instituyen una lógica de avance y retroceso que bloquea la instalación de adecuadas estrategias de bienestar, con capacidad para atender los principales riesgos sociales y reducir la desigualdad. El análisis de esta compleja e histórica problemática, contextualizada en los primeros quince años del siglo XXI, ofrece la oportunidad de identificar las distintas orientaciones políticas de los gobiernos de turno y sus dilemas.

    Beschreibung: This open access book discusses the emergence and development, and in some cases also the disappearance, of social movements and activism in Sweden during the 1980s. Its aim is to nuance and problematize the image of the 1980s as unilaterally dominated by right-wing politics and neoliberalism, as well as the idea of a conflict-free Scandinavian model. The 1980s have often been described as a period when the influence of radical-left movements during the 1970s diminished. Instead, this book argues that the 1980s was a decade in which new radical social movements emerged in opposition to the prevalent political order, including the nuclear disarmament movement, the women's movement, anti-fascist movements, and the punk and environmental movements. The authors also demonstrate how issues such as squatting, nuclear resistance, rent strikes and the environment, included a variety of contentious collective action. Sweden, therefore, presents an interesting example of how resistance and conflict in a strong welfare state have been influenced by contentious social movements. Placing Sweden within the wider context of Scandinavia and Europe, this edited collection makes an important contribution to the history of social movements.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides insight on how the tactical urbanism has the capacity to influence change in mobility practices such as cycling. COVID-19 crisis prompted the public authorities to rethink the use of public space in order to develop means of transport that are both efficient and adapted to the health context and their effects on cycling practices in Europe, North, and South America. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through policies analysis, mapping, and innovative qualitative analysis bridging video and interviews, how those new infrastructures and policies can be a trigger for change in a context of mobility transition. This book provides an important element on the way local authorities can act in a quicker and more agile way. While some decisions are specific to the context of the beginning of the pandemic, the analysis offers lessons on the way to implement the transition toward a low-carbon mobility, on the importance of processes based on trials and errors, on the political stakes of reallocating road space.

    Beschreibung: This open access publication outlines the underlying framework for gathering data on civic knowledge, attitudes, and engagement as well as contextual information, and it describes the assessment design for the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s (IEA) International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2022. The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) investigates how young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the second decade of the 21st century. ICCS 2022 is a continuation of two earlier IEA studies, ICCS 2009 and ICCS 2016, and, for the first time, this survey includes the option of a computer-based assessment. Responding to enduring and emerging challenges of educating young people in a world where contexts of democracy and civic participation continue to change, the study addresses issues related to young people’s engagement through digital technologies, migration and diversity, perceptions of the political system, global citizenship, and education for sustainable development. Over the past 50 years, IEA has conducted comparative research studies in a range of domains focusing on educational policies, practices, and outcomes in many countries around the world. Prior to ICCS 2022, IEA conducted four international comparative studies of civic and citizenship education, with a first survey implemented in 1971, a second one in 1999, third in 2009 and fourth in 2016. ICCS 2022 data will allow education systems to evaluate the strengths of educational policies, both internationally, and in a regional context, and to measure progress in achieving critical components of their educational policy agendas.

    Beschreibung: Hace años que México atraviesa por una crisis de largo aliento, combinada con sucesivos estallidos de indignación y reclamos populares. Este texto propone ubicar y pensar la crisis de México a nivel específico del estado, considerándolo en su doble faz de instrumento de dominación y promesa no inocua de bienestar y evitando salidas sencillas. Este tipo de crisis no es nuevo en la región latinoamericana, por lo que recurrimos a otras experiencias (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador y Venezuela) con ánimos de analizar qué podemos recuperar. El factor que nos permite la comparación con estos casos es la instancia de renovación constituyente: la convocatoria a renovar los acuerdos más básicos que nos ligan como pueblo. Pensamos la renovación constituyente no como simple recambio legal o técnico, sino como la convocatoria amplia a re-construir la nación a partir de acuerdos sociales básicos. ¿La figura del Congreso Constituyente es útil para estos fines? ¿cuál ha sido la experiencia al respecto en América Latina en el último movimiento constituyente? ¿Cómo se ven las perspectivas de México a la luz de esas experiencias? Estas son las preguntas que guían el texto.

These projects cover ninefields, namely, biodiversity and ecosystem, clean energy, clean water, sustainable transportation, solid waste treatment, sustainable consumption and production, green buildings, sustainable foodproduction and corporate social responsibility. Aiming at achieving green development, these projects, in their implementation, adhere to the concept of ecological civilization, combine China’s strict environmental protection systems and international standards, and take various measures of environmental protection based on the conditions of the local environment. These measures include joint efforts with local governments, businesses and communities, optimizating of design and construction plans, strict controling over different types of pollutants, and in situ conservation of species and ecosystems.The experience and practice of these 13 projects set an example for the latecomers.

Esas epistemologías negras que histórica y sistemáticamente han resistido a los ataques y pretensiones que buscar menoscabarla e invisibilizarla desde lógicas y dinámicas de poder occidental: blanco, racista, violento y patriarcal. Con este ejercicio del sentipensar logramos poner en palabras escritas, diversas expresiones de la acción política, cultural y ecológica de las resistencias de comunidades afroandina y afropacífica, que nos enseñan a vivir Ubuntu: Soy porque Somos.

    Beschreibung: Esta antología del pensamiento crítico brasileño, cuyo recorte temporal abarca desde mediados del siglo pasado hasta el presente, supone un esfuerzo por presentar algunos de los principales ejes y autores/as que organizaron la reflexión sobre la sociedad brasileña desde entonces. No se trata de agotar los temas y las cuestiones que fueron emergiendo a lo largo de este tiempo, tampoco los/las autores/as más importantes o representativos/as. Semejante tarea sería siempre frustrante e incompleta. Más bien, se busca ofrecer un panorama general respecto de cómo el pensamiento crítico fue ganando, desde la década de 1950, una relativa organización e incluso cierta acumulación intelectual en el país. La variedad de períodos, autores/as y perspectivas aquí presentes no borra un rasgo relativamente común al pensamiento crítico brasileño: se trata de una reflexión históricamente orientada, que entiende que el proceso de formación de una sociedad de origen colonial y estructurada a partir de la esclavitud y de la gran propiedad rural genera efectos de larga duración en la dinámica social, haciéndose sentir hasta el presente. Presente duro, con fuertes retrocesos sociales y políticos, que hace más urgente que nunca la tarea de rescatar y actualizar el pensamiento crítico. Como decía Francisco de Oliveira en “La tarea de la crítica", “la excepción obliga a pensar excepcionalmente".     Beschreibung: This open access book examines places on the margins and the dynamics through which a marginal position of a place is created. Specifically, it explores how places, mostly in sparsely populated areas, often perceived as immobile and frozen in time, come into being and develop through interference of everyday mobilities and creative practices that cut across the spheres of culture and nature as usually defined. Through fieldwork and case studies from areas in Iceland, Finland, Greenland, and Scotland, the book’s twelve chapters draw out the multiple relations through which places emerge, where people compose their lives as best they can with their surroundings. A special concern is to explore the links between travelling, landscape, and material culture and how places and margins are enacted through mobilities and creative practices of humans and other beings. The emphasis on mobility disturbs the perception of a place as a bounded entity and offers a useful and necessary understanding of places as mobile and fluid. Mobilities on the Margins is a novel and timely contribution to the exploration of human and more-than-human interactions in a world of increasingly fluid mobilities and insistent crises.

    Beschreibung: El presente libro es resultado de una serie de contribuciones hechas por destacados miembros del Grupo de Trabajo “Integración y Unidad Latinoamericana" a lo largo del año 2018. Originariamente inspiradas por el debate y los interrogantes surgidos durante la reunión anual del grupo realizada en Buenos Aires los días 06 y 07 de noviembre de 2017, cuyo propósito fue analizar la crisis del multilateralismo y su impacto sobre el hemisferio - con foco en los procesos de integración regional. En el mes siguiente de ese mismo año, se continuó profundizando en dicha discusión paralelamente a la realización de la Reunión Ministerial de la Organización Mundial de Comercio que sesionó en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Estas iniciativas impulsadas por el GT –como parte de un programa regional más amplio de los GT de CLACSO–, aborda en términos más especícos el análisis del punto de inexión o de reconguración del proceso de globalización y de su correspondiente sistema multilateral hegemónico, así como las implicancias que tales cambios conllevan para los esquemas de integración de América Latina y el Caribe. Estos fenómenos tienen como trasfondo el estallido de la crisis nanciera de 2008 en Estados Unidos y su posterior mutación en crisis global, la cual no ha podido ser superada del todo hasta ahora.

    Beschreibung: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht Steve Kenner der Frage nach, inwiefern sich politische Bildungsprozesse aus den Partizipationserfahrungen junger Menschen rekonstruieren lassen. Er begleitete politische Jugendinitiativen und führte Interviews mit politisch aktiven Jugendlichen (u.a. Fridays for Future und Antirassismus-Arbeitsgemeinschaften). Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung offenbaren, dass die selbstbestimmte politische Aktion zu vielfältigen Bildungsgelegenheiten führt. Quellenkritik, Recherche, Auseinandersetzung mit vielfältigen Perspektiven sowie das sachliche und wertgebundene Beurteilen zeichnen die Erfahrungen der Jugendlichen aus. Sie erleben Selbstwirksamkeit, lernen mit Misserfolgen umzugehen, Konflikte zivil zu lösen, sich im Kollektiv politisch zu organisieren und damit verbundene Herausforderungen zu bewältigen. Die begleiteten Gruppen erweisen sich nicht als homogene politische Gemeinschaft. Und dennoch besteht die Gefahr der Verinselung in ihrem Protest. Hier kann und sollte die formale politische Bildung und die demokratische Schulentwicklung ansetzen und die Partizipationserfahrungen in der politischen Aktion als Bildungsgelegenheit verstehen.

    Beschreibung: This open access book presents a condensed history of Sociology in Mexico from its origins, through to the middle of the 19th century and up to the present day. The book analyses the interaction between sociology and the main economic, political and social change in the country, including the 1910 Mexican Revolution, the main social movements, the role of the intellectual exiles from Spain and Latin America, and the participation of women, who have often remained invisible in the history of sociology. The book explores how sociological discourse played a fundamental role in the separation of secular and public education and the search for a ‘national project’ from 1868 onwards, despite the lack of an institute of social research until 1930; how sociology became an autonomous social science, led by a few intellectuals and public figures, as it became institutionalized in universities, and the effect this had on the development of the discipline; the influence of Marxism during the 1970s; and the progression from a process of specialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a new trend of working in collective projects with an increasing interdisciplinary perspective in the first decades of the 21st century.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides a panoramic view of the evolution of Spanish agriculture from 1900 to the present, offering a more diverse picture to the complex and multidimensional reality of agrarian production. With a clear transdisciplinary ambition, the book applies an original and innovative theoretical and methodological tool, termed Agrarian Social Metabolism, combining Social Metabolism with an agroecological perspective. This integrative analysis is especially interesting for environmental scientists and policy makers being the best way to design sustainable agroecosystems and public policies capable of moving us towards a more sustainable food system. Spanish agricultural production has experienced impressive growth during the 20th century which has allowed it to ensure the supply of food to the population and even to transform some crops into important chapters in foreign trade. However, this growth has had its negative side since it was based on the injection of large amounts of external energy, on the destruction of employment and the loss of profitability of agricultural activity. But perhaps the most serious part is the strong impact of the current industrialised agriculture model on Spanish agroecosystems, exposed to the overexploitation of hydric resources, pollution of the water by nitrates and pesticides, high erosion rates and an alarming loss of biodiversity; damage which in the immediate future will end up reducing production capacity.

    Beschreibung: Historicizing both emotions and politics, this open access book argues that the historical work of emotion is most clearly understood in terms of the dynamics of institutionalization. This is shown in twelve case studies that focus on decisive moments in European and US history from 1800 until today. Each case study clarifies how emotions were central to people’s political engagement and its effects. The sources range from parliamentary buildings and social movements, to images and speeches of presidents, from fascist cemeteries to the International Criminal Court. Both the timeframe and the geographical focus have been chosen to highlight the increasingly participatory character of nineteenth- and twentieth-century politics, which is inconceivable without the work of emotions.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides an overview of Felix Klein’s ideas, highlighting developments in university teaching and school mathematics related to Klein’s thoughts, stemming from the last century. It discusses the meaning, importance and the legacy of Klein’s ideas today and in the future, within an international, global context. Presenting extended versions of the talks at the Thematic Afternoon at ICME-13, the book shows that many of Klein’s ideas can be reinterpreted in the context of the current situation, and offers tips and advice for dealing with current problems in teacher education and teaching mathematics in secondary schools. It proves that old ideas are timeless, but that it takes competent, committed and assertive individuals to bring these ideas to life. Throughout his professional life, Felix Klein emphasised the importance of reflecting upon mathematics teaching and learning from both a mathematical and a psychological or educational point of view. He also strongly promoted the modernisation of mathematics in the classroom, and developed ideas on university lectures for student teachers, which he later consolidated at the beginning of the last century in the three books on elementary mathematics from a higher standpoint.

Safety and security problems in our society involve not only engineering but also social, legal, economic, cultural, and psychological issues. The enhancement needed for societal safety includes comprehensive activities of all aspects from precaution to recovery, not only of people but also of governments. In this context, the authors, members of the Faculty of Societal Safety Science, Kansai University, conducted many discussions and concluded that the major strategy is consistent independently of the type and magnitude of disaster or accident, being also the principle of the foundation of our faculty. The topics treated in this book are rather widely distributed but are well organized sequentially to provide a clear understanding of the principles of societal safety. In the first part the fundamental concepts of safety are discussed. The second part deals with risks in the societal and natural environment. Then follows, in the third part, a description of the quantitative estimation of risk and its assessment and management. The fourth part is devoted to disaster prevention, mitigation, and recovery systems. The final, fifth part presents a future perspective of societal safety science. Thorough reading of this introductory volume of societal safety science provides a clear image of the issues. This is largely because the Japanese have suffered often from natural disasters and not only have gained much valuable information about disasters but also have accumulated a store of experience. We are still in the process of reconstruction from the Great East Japan earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. This book is especially valuable therefore in studying the safety and security of people and their societies.

A través de 32 historias de vida de jóvenes, Solidaridad propone reconstruir la compleja trama de iniciativas y acciones solidarias que impulsan los jóvenes de las comunas de Medellín. La música, el audiovisual, la danza, el arte del grafiti y la defensa del medioambiente, son plataformas desde donde los jóvenes convocan al otro, lo afectan, lo conmueven, lo convocan a hacer comunidad.

Sin esa acción de memoria no sería posible el advenimiento de otra cosa, distinta de lo que hay, pero también de lo que la memoria resguarda de su pérdida. Vivimos en una región de revoluciones. La revolución ha constituido uno de los temas principales del pensamiento crítico caribeño que pretende recuperar las fuentes, las lecturas realizadas y visibilizar la trascendencia de los actos, una vez que la tórrida región es testigo de paradigmáticos procesos de su tipo. En estas islas las llamas han llegado al cielo para convertirse en sucesos, en texto esencial del mundo colonial, del Sur; procesos que después de acaecidos han forzado a Occidente a ser diferente y provocar un "giro del revés.

    Beschreibung: Se espera que este libro, en primer lugar, nutra la reexión sobre la apremiante necesidad de repensar la formación de los docentes y el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico en los países de origen de los investigadores y en las universidades, las facultades y los centros de enseñanza donde se hallan vinculados. En segundo lugar, construir comunidad académica en el contexto del Grupo de Trabajo de CLACSO “Formación docente y pensamiento crítico", de tal manera que se fortalezca la docencia y la investigación en contextos multisituados de la región latinoamericana, a la vez que se posibilitan proyectos transformadores de realidades en diferentes niveles educativos. La lectura de estas siete obras de Freire ha suscitado reexiones del orden político, social, económico, educativo y cultural que, se aspira, entren en diálogo con otras voces interesadas en la formación de docentes en todo el sentido del concepto. Finalmente, hay que anotar que el método Freire sigue en vía de ser reconocido y puesto en práctica en los escenarios reales y particulares de aquellos docentes interesados en su propia formación y en la de sus estudiantes como pensadores críticos. La autorevisión, la autocrítica, la evaluación y los ajustes al mismo método se constituyen en parte de sus características.

    Beschreibung: La tarea de elaborar una antología del pensamiento social crítico en Guatemala ha supuesto un esfuerzo en varios sentidos. En primer lugar, delimitar qué se entiende por pensamiento crítico, y luego, decidir qué período abarcar, cuáles autoras y autores incluir, y cuáles los textos pertinentes […]. Para acotar la búsqueda se comprendió como pensamiento social crítico al conjunto de ideas elaboradas desde perspectivas divergentes, a contracorriente de los discursos y las historias oficiales, que han sido el resultado de la investigación, análisis, sistematización y reflexión sobre la realidad de la sociedad guatemalteca, con el propósito de desentrañar las estructuras de poder que sostienen un orden desigual, de raíces coloniales, que niega derechos y limita el desarrollo humano de la mayoría de la población, particularmente de las mujeres, y los pueblos indígenas. En la antología que ahora se presenta, se incluye a treinta y cinco autoras y autores, mujeres y hombres, de diversas identidades, y generaciones. Algunos con una producción muy vasta y otros que inician sus reflexiones. Se trató de mostrar una polifonía de voces y perspectivas, y para efectos de una mejor comprensión se establecieron cuatro ejes que dan cuenta de las principales preocupaciones sociales, intelectuales y políticas que han predominado en las décadas de finales del siglo veinte e inicios del veintiuno: “Estado, política, sociedad y economía" (Eje 1); “Violencia política, movimientos sociales, memoria e historia" (Eje 2); “Etnicidad, relaciones interétnicas, racismo" (Eje 3); y, por último, “Cuerpos, género, feminismos, sexualidades, violencia" (Eje 4). […] Considero este texto como un aporte más en el conocimiento de la producción intelectual en Guatemala, una invitación a profundizar en el pensamiento social crítico, a identificar autorías, temas y problemáticas que ahora no fueron incorporadas. Una motivación para continuar indagando y construyendo la historia de los aportes intelectuales en el país, ampliando miradas y ejes de análisis, temporalidades y temáticas.     Beschreibung: This open access book explores creative and collaborative forms of research praxis within the social sustainability sciences. The term co-creativity is used in reference to both individual methods and overarching research approaches. Supported by a series of in-depth examples, the edited collection critically reviews the potential of co-creative research praxis to nurture just and transformative processes of change. Included amongst the individual chapters are first-hand accounts of such as: militant research strategies and guerrilla narrative, decolonial participative approaches, appreciative inquiry and care-ethics, deep-mapping, photo-voice, community-arts, digital participatory mapping, creative workshops and living labs. The collection considers how, through socially inclusive forms of action and reflection, such co-creative methods can be used to stimulate alternative understandings of why and how things are, and how they could be. It provides illustrations of (and problematizes) the use of co-creative methods as overtly disruptive interventions in their own right, and as a means of enriching the transformative potential of transdisciplinary and more traditional forms of social science research inquiry. The positionality of the researcher, together with the emotional and embodied dimensions of engaged scholarship, are threads which run throughout the book. So too does the question of how to communicate sustainability science research in a meaningful way.

    Beschreibung: This open access book presents a series of speculative, experimental modes of inquiry in the present times of environmental damage that have come to be known as the age of the Anthropocene. Throughout the book authors develop more nuanced ways of engaging with the environmentally vulnerable Arctic. They counter distancing, exoticising, and even apocalyptic imaginaries of the Arctic by staying proximate with mundane places and beings of the north. The volume engages and plays with familiar tourism concepts, such as hospitality, visiting, difference, care, openness, and distance, while expanding the focus from binary and human-centric approaches of hosts and guests to questions of wellbeing among multispecies communities. The transdisciplinary group of contributors share a curiosity about how staying proximate may provide theoretical depth and epistemological openings to attend to current tensions and to diversify the ways we do and enact research. Thus, each chapter provides a methodological experiment with proximity, developing diverse ways of envisioning and storying more-than-human worlds.

Desde la educación es posible pensar y crear otra vida donde los deseos y la alegría reemplace el dolor, la muerte y la oscuridad de la guerra y que podamos unirnos solidariamente con toda la diversidad del planeta.

    Beschreibung: Este libro pone en diálogo las discusiones del buen vivir con una serie de propuestas que se desplegaron entre mediados de la década de los sesenta y comienzos de la década del ochenta en América Latina. En aquél contexto, Fundación Bariloche, Oscar Varsavsky y, en buena medida la CEPAL, se ocuparon de formular alternativas al patrón de desarrollo centrado en el crecimiento económico, al tiempo que mostraron la factibilidad de esos otros estilos de desarrollo mediante el diseño de modelos matemáticos multivariados. Más recientemente, las propuestas del buen vivir, inspiradas en el Sumak Kawsay, han involucrado una profunda crítica al neoliberalismo y su modelo civilizatorio. La apuesta del libro es desestabilizar el efecto de homogeneidad y evidencia con el que suele presentarse "EL" desarrollo y mostrar que en distintas coyunturas ha sido objeto de impugnaciones y luchas.

    Beschreibung: This Open Access book presents unique evidence from the first comprehensive study of the outcomes of open adoption from care in Australia. It contributes to the international debate concerning the advantages and disadvantages of face-to-face post adoption contact with birth families. The chapters assess whether adoption provides a better chance of permanence and more positive outcomes than long-term foster care for abused and neglected children in care who cannot safely return to their birth families. They also explore whether open adoption can avoid some of the detrimental consequences of past policies in which adoption was shrouded in secrecy and children frequently grew up with a conflicted sense of identity. The book will appeal to policy makers, practitioners and students of social policy, social work, the law, psychology and psychiatry. It should also be of interest to adult adoptees and adoptive parents, whose experiences it reflects.

    Beschreibung: Suele decirse que la primera víctima de una guerra es la verdad. De hecho, en una guerra en sentido estricto o en una guerra política, el asesinato de la verdad y la ocultación de los hechos ocurren profusamente. En Brasil no es diferente. La primera víctima del golpe parlamentario de 2016 no fue sólo la democracia. Fue también la verdad. Antes del golpe, y para justificarlo, las fuerzas antipopulares y antinacionales difundieron, hasta el cansancio, una serie de mentiras sobre los gobiernos del Partido de los Trabajadores (PT). Las fuerzas golpistas que asaltaron Brasil quieren hacer tábula rasa de este legado, ocultando los hechos a la población y destruyendo las extraordinarias realizaciones de este período histórico virtuoso. Por lo tanto, este trabajo es un esbozo para revelar y analizar este legado. No sólo para mostrar lo que se hizo en el pasado, sino fundamentalmente para revelar lo que puede hacerse en el futuro. Estamos convencidos de que si Brasil supera el golpe, la desestructuración del Estado y del mundo del trabajo, sus medidas extremadamente regresivas y promueve un nuevo ciclo de desarrollo, la base para tal superación debe estar basada en el legado de los gobiernos del PT.
