    Beschreibung: ste libro es expresión de las investigaciones realizadas por seis integrantes de la Línea Contextos, Prácticas Políticas y Políticas Públicas como parte del Programa Posdoctoral en Ciencias Sociales, Niñez y Juventud. Los trabajos que componen el segundo libro colectivo de esta línea fueron producidos entre el 2014 y el 2017 y abordan diferentes dimensiones de las vidas de niñas, niños y jóvenes de América Latina desde una perspectiva situada que, siendo rigurosa, asume el compromiso intelectual y político de aportar a la transformación de las condiciones en las que producen sus existencias. Si bien cada uno de los seis capítulos corresponde a investigaciones singulares llevadas a cabo por cada uno de los posdoctores en tres países de América Latina (Argentina, Brasil y Colombia), estos se alimentaron de los intercambios colectivos sostenidos en el espacio de trabajo que compartimos en la Línea del Posdoctorado. De esta manera, el libro puede leerse como el encuentro de seis textos con unidad y lógica en sí mismos, pero también como obra única en la que reverberan los diálogos sostenidos en el espacio común de trabajo que construimos en estos años. En este sentido, este texto es resultado de un proceso que demandó casi dos años de debates y reelaboraciones y que pasó por diversos momentos y circunstancias antes de que se hiciera posible su publicación. Agradecemos entonces la paciencia y la dedicación de las autoras —el azar o los procesos de igualdad de género quisieron que todas las autoras fueran mujeres— así como los comentarios y aportes de los otros colegas que integran la línea, cuyos trabajos ya han sido publicados o se editarán pronto. Asimismo, queremos agradecer al equipo de trabajo del posdoctorado que radica en el Centro de Estudios de Niñez y Juventudes (Cenju) del Cinde y la Universidad de Manizales (Sandra, Daniela, Julián), a los coordinadores de las otras líneas del programa (Toya, Patricia, Karina, Silvinha, José Manuel, Héctor Fabio, Fernanda, Myriam), a Sara Victoria Alvarado, a María Camila Ospina por aceptar con generosidad hacer el prólogo, a las instituciones coeditoras y, especialmente, a Lucía Rangel, quien compartió la coordinación de la línea junto a Pablo Vommaro hasta fines del 2016, momento en el que se incorporó Alejandra Barcala a este espacio. Este libro es también símbolo del trabajo que llevamos a cabo con Lucía y una bienvenida para Alejandra. La apuesta por publicar los capítulos en su idioma original (castellano o portugués) también es expresión de la vocación intercultural y latinoamericanista de esta obra. Los invitamos a compartir las páginas que siguen y a recorrer las experiencias de investigación y práctica intelectual que contienen. Esperamos que esta sea una manera de integrarse, al menos por algunos momentos, a la comunidad que constituimos en el Posdoctorado desde el 2010, que se potencia día a día con la publicación de obras como esta y con los ecos y debates que pueda generar.     Beschreibung: Este libro permite, entre otras cosas, acercarse a la mayor parte de los desarrollos, las tendencias y los intereses teóricos que ocupan actualmente a los cientistas sociales en América Latina. Es un mapa capaz de mostrar mucho de lo que se está haciendo en el campo de la teoría social, y capaz también de mostrar mucho de lo que queda por hacer. Uno de los rasgos más notables de este mapa es su pluralidad. Se constata aquí que las más diversas tradiciones de pensamiento transitan por nuestro continente, y que son reelaboradas por nuevas lecturas de un modo tan vital como riguroso y consistente. Queda por saber si este pluralismo existente se irá todavía ampliando, si llegará a albergar más cabalmente tradiciones no tradicionales de pensamiento. Es decir, si podrá abrirse con más fuerza a un diálogo con puntos de vista sobre lo social, lo político y lo cultural provenientes de las epistemes no occidentales, o no completamente occidentales, que habitan el sur global.

    Beschreibung: This open access book evaluates research quality, quality of teaching and the relationship between the two through sound statistical methods, and in a comparative perspective with other European countries. In so doing, it covers an increasingly important topic for universities that affects university funding. It discusses whether university evaluation should be limited to a single factor or consider multiple dimensions of research, since academic careers, teaching and awarding degrees are intertwined. The chapters included in the book evaluate teaching and research, also taking the gender dimension into account, in order to understand where and when gender discrimination occurs in assessment. Divided into five sections, the book analyses the administrative data on the determinants of career completion of university students; increasing precariousness of academic careers, especially of young researchers; methods designed to assess research productivity when co-authorship and team production are becoming the standard practice; and interrelations between students’ achievements and teachers’ careers driven by research assessment. It brings together contributions from a large group of economists, statisticians and social scientists working under a project sponsored by ANVUR, the Italian agency for the evaluation of teaching and research of academic institutions. From an international perspective, the findings in this book are particularly interesting because despite low tuition costs, tertiary education in Italy has relatively low enrolment rates and even lower completion rates compared to those in other European and American countries. This book is of interest to researchers of the sociology of education, education policy, public administration, economics and statistics of education, and to administrators and policy makers working in the area of higher education.

    Beschreibung: "Hemos organizado esta antología alrededor de cinco ejes temáticos que nos permiten establecer conversaciones cruzadas entre los ensayos incluidos y formular algunas tesis que claramente los enlazan y que asumimos como propias. Podríamos haber establecido muchas más relaciones entre ellos y articular otras tesis interpretativas, pero con ello escaparíamos los confines de un ensayo introductorio. Le dejamos a los amigos y amigas lectores el culminar una tarea que siempre permanecerá inconclusa. En todo caso, encontrarán a continuación una serie de relatos críticos a nuestra oficialidad y a los intereses que esta ha salvaguardado. Damos fe que la historia reciente, en buena medida, les ha dado la razón a estos pensadores. En Puerto Rico hemos gozado de una ventaja epistemológica que nos asigna un inusual grado de responsabilidad. Las causas de nuestra crisis no solo eran anticipables —mucho más previsibles que las azarosas rutas de los huracanes— sino que algunas nos fueron anunciadas desde hace medio siglo. Los que tuvimos el privilegio de ir a la universidad del estado —ahora, como todo, bajo asedio— pudimos leer y escuchar en sus aulas a algunos de estos autores, y a muchos otros que merecerían estar aquí.     Beschreibung: Los estudios sociales en ciencia y tecnología en América Latina cuentan ya con medio siglo de desarrollo en la región. El origen del campo en los años sesenta dotó de características propias que permanecieron, a lo largo de las décadas con diferentes niveles de intensidad, en el marco de nuevos modelos y formas de pensar el desarrollo y de afrontar las condiciones de pobreza y exclusión de nuestras sociedades. Una vez recorrida la etapa de profesionalización del campo –y en diálogo con la dinámica de construcción de estos estudios en los países del norte– se retomaron desde nuevas preguntas y perspectivas aquellas reflexiones iniciadas en los años sesenta, al tiempo que se generaron esfuerzos por construir miradas originales sobre los significados sociales, económicos y políticos de la ciencia y la tecnología. Así se construyeron enfoques y perspectivas analíticas que aprovechan los aportes del campo a nivel internacional y los alimentan con perspectivas regionales. Ciencia, tecnología y sociedad en América Latina está organizado en cinco secciones variadas y heterogéneas, referidas todas ellas a América Latina, en las que se discuten problemas sociales muy diversos. El rico caudal de estas investigaciones sostiene como objetivo común la superación del atraso y de la dependencia de nuestros países, y la búsqueda de estrategias adecuadas en pos de mejorar las condiciones de vida en la región. Con una perspectiva múltiple e interdisciplinar, investigadores jóvenes del continente muestran la riqueza y la relevancia de los estudios actuales en este campo.

    Beschreibung: This open access book analyses the global diffusion of social policy as a process driven by multiplex ties between countries in global social networks. The contributions analyze links between countries via global trade, colonial history, similarity in culture, and spatial proximity. Networks are viewed as the structural backbone of the diffusion process, and diffusion is anlaysed via several subfields of social policy, in order to interrogate which network dimensions drive this process. The focus is on a global perspective of social policy diffusion via networks, and it is the first book to explicitly follow this macro-quantitative perspective on diffusion at a global scale whilst also comparing different networks.     Beschreibung: There have been significant efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at multiple levels of governance across all regions of the world. However, the manner in which the global governance norms underlying the SDGs are actually being diffused is under-researched and not well understood. This book considers the promotion of the SDGs through the lens of norm diffusion theory, with a focus on three SDG policy areas; health, education and decent work. A distinctive feature of the book is that it offers multiple original case studies of SDG norm diffusion involving Asian and European actors. A unique feature is that the case studies in the book identify relevant SDG norm senders and norm receivers, and examine the relationship between them. The book also challenges the assumption that the SDGs themselves are static and unchanging, and reveals how SDG norms are dynamic and can be reformulated as a result of contestation between norm senders and norm receivers. As well as introducing a diverse and original set of case studies, the book therefore allows readers to deepen their understandings of the policy diffusion mechanisms by which SDGs are diffused, and grasp the patterns of success and failure in the implementation of these policies.

    Beschreibung: This open access book shows how the adoption of global justice, such as eradication of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), has given rise to controversy, resistance, and transformation at the national, regional, and grass-roots levels in African and Asian countries where FGM/C has been practiced. It provides readers with up-to-date information about the effects of the campaign to eradicate FGM/C and the present situation of those countries, to which preceding books on FGM/C have scarcely referred. Adopting “zero tolerance” as a policy of eradication, WHO and other UN agencies have opposed any type of FGM/C, and many African countries have criminalized the practice. Although the campaign is based on the human rights discourse which is shared globally, the controversies concerning eradication of FGM/C on the national level and the responses of communities on the local level in those countries are diverse and complicated. Various actors such as NGOs, government officials, religious leaders, medical workers, and local inhabitants are embroiled and negotiate with each other concerning its eradication. With this book, readers are provided with an in-depth analysis of the complicated controversies and responses of local communities, referring to their particular historical and social backgrounds. The book provides two chapters on FGM/C in Asian countries, where not many studies have done yet. It also presents readers with a study of the arguments and responses to FGM/C of African immigrants by Australian health-care professionals as well as a study of male circumcision eradication campaigns, which have been carried on in tandem with FGM/C eradication campaigns but still not have been successful. With its many elaborate case studies, this book is highly recommended to readers who seek an in-depth and up-to-date integrated overview of the FGM/C studies as well as studies on the applicability of global justice to local communities.

    Beschreibung: This article argues that Amalia Alvarez’s comics album The Stories of Five Undocumented Women (2013), based on a collection of stories told by migrant women, and Daria Bogdanska’s autobiographical comics album Wage Slaves (2016) can be regarded as feminist comics activism. They are examples of comics activism since the comics point to an essential topic in opposition to a controversial issue, namely, the treatment of migrant women. The comics’ emphasis on the situation of migrant women also makes it relevant to regard them as feminist activism, since they have a performative potential to create change regarding politics and legislation. The stories can influence how readers formulate and communicate thoughts about themselves and others, and they can contribute to changing societal structures. The comics also show how it is possible to mobilise resistance, generate support networks, and create hope. By making and publishing the comics, Alvarez and Bogdanska give migrant women an opportunity to come to voice and talk back against their situation, as well as against people who just express pity instead of taking action.

En el 2015 un grupo de académicos y estudiantes puertorriqueños tuvieron la iniciativa de visitar Cuba, oportunidad en la que recibieron una serie de conferencias sobre una amplia gama de temas atinentes a la realidad cubana. En La Habana contaron con el apoyo de la Cátedra de Estudios del Caribe de la Universidad de La Habana. A esta se sumaron otras instituciones como el Instituto Superior de Relaciones Internacionales “Raúl Roa García". Fue una experiencia muy positiva para puertorriqueños y cubanos. Afortunadamente no quedó solo en interesantes conferencias e intercambios y visitas diversas. Más allá del enriquecimiento mutuo que significó el contacto directo entre boricuas y cubanos –que permitió conocernos mejor y constatar, una vez más, cuanto de común hay entre nosotros– nos lega esta interesante compilación de artículos.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides in-depth and comparative analyses of how young people in peripheral areas in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania perceive EU citizenship. It also informs the reader about the challenges faced by EU Youth Dialogue projects that aim at promoting active (EU) citizenship in these areas and it offers context-specific recommendations for local, regional, national and European policymakers and people working with young people. The contributions are based on new qualitative data collected within the framework of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Leipzig University.     Beschreibung: This open access book deals with global sanitation, where SDG 6.2 sets a target of enabling access to sanitation services for all, but has not yet been achieved in low- and middle-income countries. The transition from the United Nations MDGs to the SDGs requires more consideration based on the socio-cultural aspects of global sanitation. In other words, equitable sanitation for those in vulnerable situations could be based on socio-cultural contexts. Sanitation is a system that comprises not only a latrine but also the works for the treatment and disposal of human waste. Sanitation systems do not function by themselves but have significance only through social management. The process of decision-making also largely depends on socio-cultural conditions, and the importance of sanitation needs to be socially acknowledged. The health benefits of sanitation improvement—among the significant contributions of sanitation—also need to be considered in the socio-cultural milieu. Further, the social-culture itself is affected, and potentially even created, by sanitation. In this context, more progress on the improvement of sanitation requires a more holistic approach across disciplines. In this book, we present the concept of the Sanitation Triangle, which considers the interconnections of health, materials, and socio-culture in sanitation, as a holistic approach, and the case studies based on the Sanitation Triangle by diverse disciplines such as Cultural Anthropology, Development Studies, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Science Communication. By the deep theoretical examinations and inter-dialogues between the different disciplines, this book explores the potentialities of inter-disciplinary studies on global sanitation.

It challenges the tendency of the multilevel governance literature to overlook political controversies and conflicts and questions the assumption that it represents the best policymaking arrangement for promoting policy convergence. In doing so, it explores the functioning of the reception component of the Common European Asylum System in centralised states and federal/regional states and analyses its implementation at both national and local levels. The book reveals the heterogeneous development of reception policies not only across Member States but also within each country where solutions adopted at the local level generally diverge substantially. Furthermore, the overall centralization of policymaking on reception regardless the institutional structure, seems to leave little room for MLG arrangements tailored to specific localities and triggers tensions between central governments and local authorities. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of migration and asylum studies, immigration, (multilevel) global governance and more broadly to comparative politics, European studies/politics, and public policy."

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides insight on how the tactical urbanism has the capacity to influence change in mobility practices such as cycling. COVID-19 crisis prompted the public authorities to rethink the use of public space in order to develop means of transport that are both efficient and adapted to the health context and their effects on cycling practices in Europe, North, and South America. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through policies analysis, mapping, and innovative qualitative analysis bridging video and interviews, how those new infrastructures and policies can be a trigger for change in a context of mobility transition. This book provides an important element on the way local authorities can act in a quicker and more agile way. While some decisions are specific to the context of the beginning of the pandemic, the analysis offers lessons on the way to implement the transition toward a low-carbon mobility, on the importance of processes based on trials and errors, on the political stakes of reallocating road space.

    Beschreibung: Social and economic histories of the long eighteenth century have largely ignored women as a class of landowners and improvers. 1700 to 1830 was a period in which the landscape of large swathes of the English Midlands was reshaped – both materially and imaginatively – by parliamentary enclosure and a bundle of other new practices. Outside the Midlands too, local landscapes were remodelled in line with the improving ideals of the era. Yet while we know a great deal about the men who pushed forward schemes for enclosure and sponsored agricultural improvement, far less is known about the role played by female landowners and farmers and their contributions to landscape change. Drawing on examples from across Georgian England, Elite Women and the Agricultural Landscape, 1700–1830 offers a detailed study of elite women’s relationships with landed property, specifically as they were mediated through the lens of their estate management and improvement. This highly original book provides an explicitly feminist historical geography of the eighteenth-century English rural landscape. It addresses important questions about propertied women’s role in English rural communities and in Georgian society more generally, whilst contributing to wider cultural debates about women’s place in the environmental, social and economic history of Britain. It will be of interest to those working in Historical and Cultural Geography, Social, Economic and Cultural History, Women’s Studies, Gender Studies and Landscape Studies.

    Beschreibung: La lucha por la implementación del Acuerdo de Paz transcurre de manera simultánea en dos sentidos. Por una parte, como necesidad de superar y derrotar en forma definitiva las resistencias de sectores que liderados por las expresiones más extremistas de la derecha política buscan desconocer la realidad histórica y concreta del Acuerdo de Paz, en cuanto posibilidad de tramitar el conflicto social y d clase por la vía exclusivamente política. Pero, al mismo tiempo, por la otra, como necesidad también de una implementación integral, de construir la legitimidad de una concepción de la paz que trascienda la visión meramente pacificadora o gatopardista, es decir, que apunte a una paz que efectivamente posea los contenidos propios de la democracia verdadera y la justicia social en camino hacias las transformaciones más profundas de la sociedad colombiana. Y, por qué no decirlo, que se encauce hacia la superación definitiva del orden social vigente; aspiración que también se encontraba tanto en los orígenes como en la larga historia de la lucha guerrillera en Colombia.

It features essays that take a close look at key intellectuals and how they engaged with the main ideas of this qualitative introduction to geocentric cosmology. Johannes de Sacrobosco compiled his Tractatus de sphaera during the thirteenth century in the frame of his teaching activities at the then recently founded University of Paris. It soon became a mandatory text all over Europe. As a result, a tradition of commentaries to the text was soon established and flourished until the second half of the 17th century. Here, readers will find an informative overview of these commentaries complete with a rich context. The essays explore the educational and social backgrounds of the writers. They also detail how their careers developed after the publication of their commentaries, the institutions and patrons they were affiliated with, what their agenda was, and whether and how they actually accomplished it. The editor of this collection considers these scientific commentaries as genuine scientific works. The contributors investigate them here not only in reference to the work on which it comments but also, and especially, as independent scientific contributions that are socially, institutionally, and intellectually contextualized around their authors.

    Beschreibung: *THIS BOOK WILL SOON BECOME AVAILABLE AS OPEN ACCESS BOOK* This book is an excellent synthesis of the initial and continuing preparation for Mathematics Teaching in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, from which comparative analyses can be made that show similarities and differences, and highlight various perspectives. In August 2012, a workshop of the Capacity and Networking Project (CANP) of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) was held in Costa Rica. This CANP brought together for two weeks a group of 66 Mathematics educators, mathematicians, university administrators, and elementary and secondary teachers from Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Panamá and Costa Rica. The goal was to promote progress in Mathematics Education in the region; as such it was a unique experience in the region. One of the most important results of this event was the creation of the Mathematics Education Network of Central America and the Caribbean (REDUMATE). It was organized by persons associated with the Mathematics Education Reform Project in Costa Rica (responsible for the most outstanding and innovative curriculum reform in Latin America) and the Inter-American Committee on Mathematics Education (IACME), which is an official regional multinational organization affiliate of ICMI. This book brings to the international Educational Community an important collection of experiences and ideas in the Mathematics Education of four countries of a region within the heart of the American continent, a region that has been many times forgotten. The dissemination of these results can promote the search for international collaborative actions in a wider scale.

    Chapter 5 Sexuality education in Thailand (2022)

    Beschreibung: Internationally, providing young people with comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) has been suggested as an effective measure to achieve the goals of ending the AIDS epidemic and promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights, both before and after the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the implementation of school-based CSE continues to stagnate worldwide. This chapter provides a case study of Thailand to elucidate the norm diffusion process of school-based CSE within a state. For this aim, this chapter investigates Thailand’s policy development process and implementation with a focus on promotion and contestation against CSE among domestic actors. It also investigates the schools that participated in the national-scale project: the Teenpath Project, implemented by a non-governmental organisation to widen the implementation of CSE in schools. The results of the case study highlighted that school-based CSE in Thailand was promoted predominantly from a public health point of view, and that contestation was closely related to the perceived contradictions between the contents of CSE and existing socio-cultural norms. It was also found that the key to wider implementation of CSE at the school level was to enhance teachers’ and parents’ subjective recognition of the positive outcomes of CSE.

    Beschreibung: This open access book offers an unprecedented analysis of child welfare schemes, situating them in the wider context of post-war policy debates about the care of children. Between 1945 and 1970, an estimated 3,500 children were sent from Britain to Australia, unaccompanied by their parents, through child migration schemes funded by the Australian and British Governments and delivered by churches, religious orders and charities. Functioning in a wider history of the migration of unaccompanied children to overseas British colonies, the post-war schemes to Australia have become the focus of public attention through a series of public reports in Britain and Australia that have documented the harm they caused to many child migrants. Whilst addressing the wide range of organisations involved, the book focuses particularly on knowledge, assumptions and decisions within UK Government Departments and asks why these schemes continued to operate in the post-war period despite often failing to adhere to standards of child-care set out in the influential 1946 Curtis Report. Some factors – such as the tensions between British policy on child-care and assisted migration – are unique to these schemes. However, the book also examines other factors such as complex government systems, fragmented lines of departmental responsibility and civil service cultures that may contribute to the failure of vulnerable people across a much wider range of policy contexts.

En nuestro continente, además de los casos mencionados, también hubo grandes luchas estudiantiles en Argentina, Colombia y Chile, que aparecen en este volumen, y en Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Perú y Venezuela, que lamentablemente no cuentan con capítulos específicos en nuestro libro. De esa forma, ante el cuadro de emergencias en el que se encuentra Haití, surgieron preguntas respecto de cuáles serían las tareas más osadas de un educador que acepta el desafío como su responsabilidad. Preguntas como ésta, entre otras, nos han acompañado en el día-a-día, a lo largo de la escritura de este libro. Sin duda, el repensar a Haití y sus procesos educativos, consiste en un gran desafío que no puede ser asumido de forma aislada, sino de forma colectiva.

    Beschreibung: This book investigates the experiences of second- and third-generation Italians living in South Africa, exploring how nostalgia for Italy influences their sense of identity and belonging. The Italian community in South Africa is a unique diaspora, with a complex history, including roots in Italian colonial activities in Africa, and in World War II. This book looks at how the descendants of these early migrants take pride in being Italian and value the Italian language. They also ascribe much importance to their family roots, and have often created a romanticized image of Italy, mostly based on childhood vacation visits. The longing for an imaginary idealized version of Italy is closely linked to their wider search for a sense of identity and belonging against the backdrop of South African society, currently still grappling with its own multicultural identity. Interdisciplinary by design, this book draws on insights from both cultural studies and psychology in order to shine a light on an important and under-studied diasporic community. The book will be of interest to scholars from across migration studies and the Humanities in general.     Beschreibung: In this chapter I have endeavoured to demonstrate the ways in which an approach that takes the emotions seriously might nuance and complicate our understandings of the history of pre-anaesthetic surgery. In general, historians have tended to focus on the operations of surgical dispassion, or what we might now term clinical detachment. What this research suggests, however, is that compassion and emotional expression played a surprisingly important role in shaping the cultures of early nineteenth-century operative surgery as well as the identities of its practitioners. In the decades immediately preceding the advent of anaesthesia, pain became a central concern of surgical discourse and the response to this concern was shaped by the cultures of sentiment and sensibility. However, this culture of compassion was no ‘natural’ reaction to a self-evident problem. Rather, it was a culturally and historically contingent phenomenon which could be harnessed to the ideologies and ambitions of medical reform. In the hands of men like John Bell and Thomas Wakley, the image of the surgeon as a man of refined and honest sentiment was linked to a critique of the medical and surgical ancien regime, providing an idealised representation of a more expert, meritocratic and altruistic profession.

    Beschreibung: En el marco de intensos cambios políticos y económicos, el salto de siglo trajo a Latinoamérica nuevas orientaciones en la gestión y negociación de las políticas sociales, además de consensos y conflictos en torno a las mismas. Sin abandonar del todo las medidas de corte liberal recomendadas por el Consenso de Washington, buena parte de los gobiernos de la región incluyeron en sus agendas objetivos de corte universalista, junto con la implementación de un conjunto de transformaciones (heterogéneas) que mantienen, consolidan o modifican procesos iniciados en los años ochenta del siglo pasado. Partiendo de este contexto, la presente obra colectiva del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Pobreza y Políticas Sociales de CLACSO, condensa sus preocupaciones sobre los retos que enfrenta América Latina para enfrentar los niveles de exclusión social que la caracterizan, a la vez que ensaya explicaciones sobre la incidencia de los ciclos económicos y políticos que afectan permanentemente su patrón de distribución de la riqueza, e instituyen una lógica de avance y retroceso que bloquea la instalación de adecuadas estrategias de bienestar, con capacidad para atender los principales riesgos sociales y reducir la desigualdad.     Beschreibung: This open access book discusses the emergence and development, and in some cases also the disappearance, of social movements and activism in Sweden during the 1980s. Its aim is to nuance and problematize the image of the 1980s as unilaterally dominated by right-wing politics and neoliberalism, as well as the idea of a conflict-free Scandinavian model. The 1980s have often been described as a period when the influence of radical-left movements during the 1970s diminished. Instead, this book argues that the 1980s was a decade in which new radical social movements emerged in opposition to the prevalent political order, including the nuclear disarmament movement, the women's movement, anti-fascist movements, and the punk and environmental movements. The authors also demonstrate how issues such as squatting, nuclear resistance, rent strikes and the environment, included a variety of contentious collective action. Sweden, therefore, presents an interesting example of how resistance and conflict in a strong welfare state have been influenced by contentious social movements. Placing Sweden within the wider context of Scandinavia and Europe, this edited collection makes an important contribution to the history of social movements.

COVID-19 crisis prompted the public authorities to rethink the use of public space in order to develop means of transport that are both efficient and adapted to the health context and their effects on cycling practices in Europe, North, and South America. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through policies analysis, mapping, and innovative qualitative analysis bridging video and interviews, how those new infrastructures and policies can be a trigger for change in a context of mobility transition. This book provides an important element on the way local authorities can act in a quicker and more agile way. While some decisions are specific to the context of the beginning of the pandemic, the analysis offers lessons on the way to implement the transition toward a low-carbon mobility, on the importance of processes based on trials and errors, on the political stakes of reallocating road space.

    Beschreibung: Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book raises new questions and provides different perspectives on the roles, responsibilities, ethics and protection of interpreters in war while investigating the substance and agents of Japanese war crimes and legal aspects of interpreters’ taking part in war crimes. Informed by studies on interpreter ethics in conflict, historical studies of Japanese war crimes and legal discussion on individual liability in war crimes, Takeda provides a detailed description and analysis of the 39 interpreter defendants and interpreters as witnesses of war crimes at British military trials against the Japanese in the aftermath of the Pacific War, and tackles ethical and legal issues of various risks faced by interpreters in violent conflict.The book first discusses the backgrounds, recruitment and wartime activities of the accused interpreters at British military trials in addition to the charges they faced, the defence arguments and the verdicts they received at the trials, with attention to why so many of the accused were Taiwanese and foreign-born Japanese. Takeda provides a contextualized discussion, focusing on the Japanese military’s specific linguistic needs in its occupied areas in Southeast Asia and the attributes of interpreters who could meet such needs. In the theoretical examination of the issues that emerge, the focus is placed on interpreters’ proximity to danger, visibility and perceived authorship of speech, legal responsibility in war crimes and ethical issues in testifying as eyewitnesses of criminal acts in violent hostilities. Takeda critically examines prior literature on the roles of interpreters in conflict and ethical concerns such as interpreter neutrality and confidentiality, drawing on legal discussion of the ineffectiveness of the superior orders defence and modes of individual liability in war crimes. The book seeks to promote intersectoral discussion on how interpreters can be protected from exposure to manifestly unlawful acts such as torture.

    Chapter 7 Diffusion of inclusive education in Malawi (2022)

    Beschreibung: This chapter discusses and analyzes the diffusion of the inclusive education concept as a norm of educational policy in developing countries by taking up primary school system in Malawi as a case. For the last two decades, international trends in education for pupils with disabilities have been shifting from “special” or “integrated” education to “inclusive education”. Inclusive education was originally launched through the Salamanca Statement, adopted at the World Conference on Special Needs Education in 1994. Adoption and widespread ratification of the 2006 Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities provides the legal basis for this concept. Also, the SDGs, which embrace “inclusive” as a key term in the overarching Goal 4, significantly promote the diffusion of this concept in educational policies in both developed and developing countries. Our research is based on extensive fieldwork; seven classroom observations, 137 questionnaires and numerous interviews with key stakeholders including teachers, principals and parents. Based on this data analysis, the chapter discusses the complexity of diffusion of the norm of inclusive education from international to national, national to local, and suggests a more careful promotion of the new concept in educational practices, while fully acknowledging the achievement and potentials of inclusive education.

    Beschreibung: This open access publication outlines the underlying framework for gathering data on civic knowledge, attitudes, and engagement as well as contextual information, and it describes the assessment design for the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s (IEA) International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2022. The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) investigates how young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the second decade of the 21st century. ICCS 2022 is a continuation of two earlier IEA studies, ICCS 2009 and ICCS 2016, and, for the first time, this survey includes the option of a computer-based assessment. Responding to enduring and emerging challenges of educating young people in a world where contexts of democracy and civic participation continue to change, the study addresses issues related to young people’s engagement through digital technologies, migration and diversity, perceptions of the political system, global citizenship, and education for sustainable development. Over the past 50 years, IEA has conducted comparative research studies in a range of domains focusing on educational policies, practices, and outcomes in many countries around the world. Prior to ICCS 2022, IEA conducted four international comparative studies of civic and citizenship education, with a first survey implemented in 1971, a second one in 1999, third in 2009 and fourth in 2016. ICCS 2022 data will allow education systems to evaluate the strengths of educational policies, both internationally, and in a regional context, and to measure progress in achieving critical components of their educational policy agendas.

    Beschreibung: Hace años que México atraviesa por una crisis de largo aliento, combinada con sucesivos estallidos de indignación y reclamos populares. Este texto propone ubicar y pensar la crisis de México a nivel específico del estado, considerándolo en su doble faz de instrumento de dominación y promesa no inocua de bienestar y evitando salidas sencillas. Este tipo de crisis no es nuevo en la región latinoamericana, por lo que recurrimos a otras experiencias (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador y Venezuela) con ánimos de analizar qué podemos recuperar. El factor que nos permite la comparación con estos casos es la instancia de renovación constituyente: la convocatoria a renovar los acuerdos más básicos que nos ligan como pueblo. Pensamos la renovación constituyente no como simple recambio legal o técnico, sino como la convocatoria amplia a re-construir la nación a partir de acuerdos sociales básicos. ¿La figura del Congreso Constituyente es útil para estos fines? ¿cuál ha sido la experiencia al respecto en América Latina en el último movimiento constituyente? ¿Cómo se ven las perspectivas de México a la luz de esas experiencias? Estas son las preguntas que guían el texto.

    Beschreibung: Exploring indigenous life projects in encounters with extractivism, the present open access volume discusses how current turbulences actualise questions of indigeneity, difference and ontological dynamics in the Andes and Amazonia. While studies of extractivism in South America often focus on wider national and international politics, this contribution instead provides ethnographic explorations of indigenous politics, perspectives and worlds, revealing loss and suffering as well as creative strategies to mediate the extralocal. Seeking to avoid conceptual imperialism or the imposition of exogenous categories, the chapters are grounded in the respective authors’ long-standing field research. The authors examine the reactions (from resistance to accommodation), consequences (from anticipation to rubble) and materials (from fossil fuel to water) diversely related to extractivism in rural and urban settings. How can Amerindian strategies to preserve localised communities in extractivist contexts contribute to ways of thinking otherwise?

Aiming at achieving green development, these projects, in their implementation, adhere to the concept of ecological civilization, combine China’s strict environmental protection systems and international standards, and take various measures of environmental protection based on the conditions of the local environment. These measures include joint efforts with local governments, businesses and communities, optimizating of design and construction plans, strict controling over different types of pollutants, and in situ conservation of species and ecosystems.The experience and practice of these 13 projects set an example for the latecomers.

Esas epistemologías negras que histórica y sistemáticamente han resistido a los ataques y pretensiones que buscar menoscabarla e invisibilizarla desde lógicas y dinámicas de poder occidental: blanco, racista, violento y patriarcal. Con este ejercicio del sentipensar logramos poner en palabras escritas, diversas expresiones de la acción política, cultural y ecológica de las resistencias de comunidades afroandina y afropacífica, que nos enseñan a vivir Ubuntu: Soy porque Somos.

    Beschreibung: Critical mapping—a problematizing, reflective approach—is the process of compiling and analyzing existing design outcomes (DOs) that address a wicked problem (e.g., food insecurity) in a way that creates a synthesis between equity, justice, and environmental responsibility. Critical mapping begins with identification and operationalization of the wicked problem leading to an integrative literature review of multidisciplinary scholarly sources to identify peer-reviewed DOs that contribute to addressing the wicked problem sustainably. Next, it progresses to charting the sustainable DOs affinitively with four quadrants—top-down and local, top-down and memetic (i.e., widespread), bottom-up and memetic, bottom-up, and local. The resulting visualization, introduced as a wicked solution, facilitates analysis to identify places to intervene in the system, where one can synthesize the impact of existing sustainable DOs to understand where gaps exist for future design innovation or appropriation that has the potential to cumulatively solve the wicked problem over time.

    Beschreibung: Esta antología del pensamiento crítico brasileño, cuyo recorte temporal abarca desde mediados del siglo pasado hasta el presente, supone un esfuerzo por presentar algunos de los principales ejes y autores/as que organizaron la reflexión sobre la sociedad brasileña desde entonces. No se trata de agotar los temas y las cuestiones que fueron emergiendo a lo largo de este tiempo, tampoco los/las autores/as más importantes o representativos/as. Semejante tarea sería siempre frustrante e incompleta. Más bien, se busca ofrecer un panorama general respecto de cómo el pensamiento crítico fue ganando, desde la década de 1950, una relativa organización e incluso cierta acumulación intelectual en el país. La variedad de períodos, autores/as y perspectivas aquí presentes no borra un rasgo relativamente común al pensamiento crítico brasileño: se trata de una reflexión históricamente orientada, que entiende que el proceso de formación de una sociedad de origen colonial y estructurada a partir de la esclavitud y de la gran propiedad rural genera efectos de larga duración en la dinámica social, haciéndose sentir hasta el presente. Presente duro, con fuertes retrocesos sociales y políticos, que hace más urgente que nunca la tarea de rescatar y actualizar el pensamiento crítico. Como decía Francisco de Oliveira en “La tarea de la crítica", “la excepción obliga a pensar excepcionalmente".     Beschreibung: This open access book examines places on the margins and the dynamics through which a marginal position of a place is created. Specifically, it explores how places, mostly in sparsely populated areas, often perceived as immobile and frozen in time, come into being and develop through interference of everyday mobilities and creative practices that cut across the spheres of culture and nature as usually defined. Through fieldwork and case studies from areas in Iceland, Finland, Greenland, and Scotland, the book’s twelve chapters draw out the multiple relations through which places emerge, where people compose their lives as best they can with their surroundings. A special concern is to explore the links between travelling, landscape, and material culture and how places and margins are enacted through mobilities and creative practices of humans and other beings. The emphasis on mobility disturbs the perception of a place as a bounded entity and offers a useful and necessary understanding of places as mobile and fluid. Mobilities on the Margins is a novel and timely contribution to the exploration of human and more-than-human interactions in a world of increasingly fluid mobilities and insistent crises.

    Beschreibung: El presente libro es resultado de una serie de contribuciones hechas por destacados miembros del Grupo de Trabajo “Integración y Unidad Latinoamericana" a lo largo del año 2018. Originariamente inspiradas por el debate y los interrogantes surgidos durante la reunión anual del grupo realizada en Buenos Aires los días 06 y 07 de noviembre de 2017, cuyo propósito fue analizar la crisis del multilateralismo y su impacto sobre el hemisferio - con foco en los procesos de integración regional. En el mes siguiente de ese mismo año, se continuó profundizando en dicha discusión paralelamente a la realización de la Reunión Ministerial de la Organización Mundial de Comercio que sesionó en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Estas iniciativas impulsadas por el GT –como parte de un programa regional más amplio de los GT de CLACSO–, aborda en términos más especícos el análisis del punto de inexión o de reconguración del proceso de globalización y de su correspondiente sistema multilateral hegemónico, así como las implicancias que tales cambios conllevan para los esquemas de integración de América Latina y el Caribe. Estos fenómenos tienen como trasfondo el estallido de la crisis nanciera de 2008 en Estados Unidos y su posterior mutación en crisis global, la cual no ha podido ser superada del todo hasta ahora.

    Beschreibung: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht Steve Kenner der Frage nach, inwiefern sich politische Bildungsprozesse aus den Partizipationserfahrungen junger Menschen rekonstruieren lassen. Er begleitete politische Jugendinitiativen und führte Interviews mit politisch aktiven Jugendlichen (u.a. Fridays for Future und Antirassismus-Arbeitsgemeinschaften). Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung offenbaren, dass die selbstbestimmte politische Aktion zu vielfältigen Bildungsgelegenheiten führt. Quellenkritik, Recherche, Auseinandersetzung mit vielfältigen Perspektiven sowie das sachliche und wertgebundene Beurteilen zeichnen die Erfahrungen der Jugendlichen aus. Sie erleben Selbstwirksamkeit, lernen mit Misserfolgen umzugehen, Konflikte zivil zu lösen, sich im Kollektiv politisch zu organisieren und damit verbundene Herausforderungen zu bewältigen. Die begleiteten Gruppen erweisen sich nicht als homogene politische Gemeinschaft. Und dennoch besteht die Gefahr der Verinselung in ihrem Protest. Hier kann und sollte die formale politische Bildung und die demokratische Schulentwicklung ansetzen und die Partizipationserfahrungen in der politischen Aktion als Bildungsgelegenheit verstehen.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides a panoramic view of the evolution of Spanish agriculture from 1900 to the present, offering a more diverse picture to the complex and multidimensional reality of agrarian production. With a clear transdisciplinary ambition, the book applies an original and innovative theoretical and methodological tool, termed Agrarian Social Metabolism, combining Social Metabolism with an agroecological perspective. This integrative analysis is especially interesting for environmental scientists and policy makers being the best way to design sustainable agroecosystems and public policies capable of moving us towards a more sustainable food system. Spanish agricultural production has experienced impressive growth during the 20th century which has allowed it to ensure the supply of food to the population and even to transform some crops into important chapters in foreign trade. However, this growth has had its negative side since it was based on the injection of large amounts of external energy, on the destruction of employment and the loss of profitability of agricultural activity. But perhaps the most serious part is the strong impact of the current industrialised agriculture model on Spanish agroecosystems, exposed to the overexploitation of hydric resources, pollution of the water by nitrates and pesticides, high erosion rates and an alarming loss of biodiversity; damage which in the immediate future will end up reducing production capacity.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides an overview of Felix Klein’s ideas, highlighting developments in university teaching and school mathematics related to Klein’s thoughts, stemming from the last century. It discusses the meaning, importance and the legacy of Klein’s ideas today and in the future, within an international, global context. Presenting extended versions of the talks at the Thematic Afternoon at ICME-13, the book shows that many of Klein’s ideas can be reinterpreted in the context of the current situation, and offers tips and advice for dealing with current problems in teacher education and teaching mathematics in secondary schools. It proves that old ideas are timeless, but that it takes competent, committed and assertive individuals to bring these ideas to life. Throughout his professional life, Felix Klein emphasised the importance of reflecting upon mathematics teaching and learning from both a mathematical and a psychological or educational point of view. He also strongly promoted the modernisation of mathematics in the classroom, and developed ideas on university lectures for student teachers, which he later consolidated at the beginning of the last century in the three books on elementary mathematics from a higher standpoint.

In demonstrating their historical significance as subjects and shapers of medicine, it offers important insights into past animal lives, and reveals that what we think of as ‘human’ medicine was in fact deeply zoological. Each chapter analyses an important episode in which animals changed and were changed by medicine. Ranging across the animal inhabitants of Britain’s zoos, sick sheep on Scottish farms, unproductive livestock in developing countries, and the tapeworms of California and Beirut, they illuminate the multi-species dimensions of modern medicine and its rich historical connections with biology, zoology, agriculture and veterinary medicine. The modern movement for One Health – whose history is also analyzed – is therefore revealed as just the latest attempt to improve health by working across species and disciplines.
