The contributions examine the contrast between genre theory and practice, the interplay of genre interference and intertextuality, and the tension between convention and innovation. The focus is on the relationship of post-Augustan epic poetry to the earlier tradition, i.e. to authoritative predecessors such as Homer, Virgil and Ovid. The self-positioning of later poets in relation to the canon often goes hand in hand with an endeavour to reconfigure traditional elements: By omitting, varying or exaggerating aspects typical of the genre, their works enter into a dialogue with the earlier epics, permanently subverting the audience's horizons of expectation. The integration of non-genre discourses plays a central role here: modern literary concepts for analysing genre interference are critically evaluated in the anthology and incorporated into the interpretation in a reflective manner. The methodological range and innovative approaches in this volume make an important contribution to deepening and expanding the current state of research.

With respect to historical terminologies, however, research has been dominated by linguistic approaches. Breaking new ground, Coming to Terms collects eleven articles that combine an interest in the history of knowledge, mostly ancient Greek, with research on scientific terminologies. They all share an interest in terminological practices, that is, questions such as how and when to coin a term and then what to do with it. Among the fields discussed are astronomy, the Roman surveyors, Aristotelian science, Renaissance and modern biology, contemporary medicine, ancient Chinese philosophy, 20th-century physics, and colonial linguistics.     Description: This ambitious study of the proper names of the Chanson de Roland proves that it is more tightly and profoundly structured and considerably richer in depicting reality than generally assumed, and that its prehistory can be traced back (almost) to the Frankish defeat.     Description: In an article entitled “Per una nuova valutazione del Quattrocento francese” published in 1957 on the threshold of the first booklet of "Studi Francesi", Franco Simone affirmed that philological restitution of texts and understanding of their place inside the culture that had products were the premise essential, before any exegesis or critical interpretation, to achieve a redefinition of overly limited historiographical paradigms in which the French literature from the late Middle Ages had been located until that time. We know that the research of the Italian scientist has powerfully dissipated the historiographical myth of the 15th century Gothic opposed to the blooming of Italian culture, for the benefit of an enhancement of wealth and fertility a period which testifies, among other things, to an acute historical awareness and of great interest for the ancient tradition, as well as for the great founders of Italian Humanism; in the following decades, synergistic efforts specialists largely trained in French, Belgian and Italian schools have resulted in the publication of numerous studies and editions in the field of literature in French medium, in favor of the base for a imposing critical work that has refined, corrected and deepened the suggested perspective formerly by the author of La coscienza della rinascita negli umanisti francesi.
    Description: Dans un article intitulé « Per una nuova valutazione del Quattrocento francese » paru en 1957 au seuil du premier fascicule des « Studi Francesi », Franco Simone1 affirmait que la restitution philologique des textes et la compréhension de leur place à l’intérieur de la culture qui les avait produits étaient la prémisse indispensable, avant toute exégèse ou interprétation critique, pour parvenir à une redéfinition des paradigmes historiographiques trop limités dans lesquels la littérature française du Moyen Âge tardif avait été située jusqu’à cette époque. On sait que les recherches du savant italien ont contribué puissamment à dissiper le mythe historiographique d’un XVe siècle gothique opposé à l’efflorescence de la culture italienne, au profit d’une valorisation de la richesse et de la fécondité d’une période qui témoigne, entre autres, d’une conscience historique aiguë et d’un grand intérêt pour la tradition antique, ainsi que pour les grands fondateurs de l’Humanisme italien ; dans les décennies suivantes, les efforts synergiques de spécialistes formés en grande partie à l’école française, belge et italienne ont abouti à la publication de nombreuses études et éditions dans le domaine de la littérature en moyen français, en fournissant la base pour un travail critique imposant qui a affiné, corrigé et approfondi la perspective suggérée autrefois par l’auteur de La coscienza della rinascita negli umanisti francesi.

    Description: Physiognomy and ekphrasis are two of the most important modes of description in antiquity and represent the necessary precursors of scientific description. The primary way of divining the characteristics and fate of an individual, whether inborn or acquired, was to observe the patient’s external characteristics and behaviour. This volume focuses initially on two types of descriptive literature in Mesopotamia: physiognomic omens and what we might call ekphrastic description. These modalities are traced through ancient India, Ugaritic and the Hebrew Bible, before arriving at the physiognomic features of famous historical figures such as Themistocles, Socrates or Augustus in the Graeco-Roman world, where physiognomic discussions become intertwined with typological analyses of human characters. The Arabic compendial culture absorbed and remade these different physiognomic and ekphrastic traditions, incorporating both Mesopotamian links between physiognomy and medicine and the interest in characterological ‘types’ that had emerged in the Hellenistic period.This volume offer the first wide-ranging picture of these modalities of description in antiquity.

    Description: This study investigates the role of embedded narratives in Silius Italicus’ Punica, an epic from the late first century AD on the Second Punic War (218–202 BC). At first sight, these narratives seem to be loosely ‘embedded’ in the epic, having their own plot and being situated in a different time or place than the main narrative. A closer look reveals, however, that they foreshadow or recall elements that are found elsewhere in the epic. In this way, they serve as ‘mirrors’ of the main narrative.     Description: So far, only the Latin text in a critical edition from the year 1948 has been available from the law treaty of the Summa Halensis. With the three-volume publication, a German translation and a commentary on this important work in the transition from early modern to high scholasticism will be presented together with the Latin text for the first time. From a conceptual point of view, this treatise was fundamental in its foundation and development of the different manifestations of the law - as eternal law, natural law, Mosaic law and evangelical law. His extensive interpretation of the Mosaic Law also has concrete references to the world of life and belief, which are revealing for the cultural and social history of this time. Also regarding the turning to the Torah in the current theology and in the context of the interreligious and socio-political discourses over the understanding of the law deserves attention the law council of the Summa Halensis, because he in many respects to the reflection over the function (s) of the law as well as the context of theology and law.
    Description: Von dem Gesetzestraktat der Summa Halensis lag bislang nur der lateinische Text in einer kritischen Edition aus dem Jahr 1948 vor. Mit der dreibändigen Publikation werden nun erstmals zusammen mit dem lateinischen Text auch eine deutsche Übersetzung und ein Kommentar zu diesem bedeutenden Werk im Übergang von der Früh- zur Hochscholastik vorgelegt. In konzeptioneller Hinsicht war dieser Traktat mit seiner Begründung und Entfaltung der unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen des Gesetzes - als ewiges Gesetz, Naturgesetz, mosaisches Gesetz und evangelisches Gesetz - grundlegend. Seine umfangreiche Auslegung des mosaischen Gesetzes weist zudem konkrete Bezüge zur Lebens- und Glaubenswelt auf, die für die Kultur- und Sozialgeschichte dieser Zeit aufschlussreich sind. Auch im Blick auf die Hinwendung zur Tora in der gegenwärtigen Theologie und im Zusammenhang mit den interreligiösen und gesellschaftspolitischen Diskursen über das Gesetzesverständnis verdient der Gesetzestraktat der Summa Halensis Beachtung, weil er in vielfältiger Hinsicht zur Reflexion über die Funktion(en) des Gesetzes sowie den Zusammenhang von Theologie und Recht anregt.

    Description: Literary description emerges as one of the central elements of late antique poetry. It serves a dual role in that it interacts both to represent multisensory perceptions and to break through the illusion it creates through metapoetic discourse. This self-referentiality makes the late antique descriptive a space of intense literary communication between poet and readership in different genres and contexts. This study systematically examines the textual strategies of description in selected works by the poets Claudian, Prudence and Ausonius, who were active between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The texts are analysed with regard to ancient conceptualisations of descriptio and with the help of modern models of literary and cultural studies. The texts show both a continuation and an intensification of already existing traditions, which are expressed in a productive use of intertexts, a complex mediality and a textual world that plays with distance and proximity.

    Description: The work Eikones (Imagines/Images) by Philostratus consists of 64 fictitious descriptions of images. Mario Baumann analyzes the aesthetic virtuosity which characterizes this text. The speaker who formulates the descriptions proves himself a master in interpreting the images. He creates a unique textual composition of images which continually surprises and challenges the reader due to its diversity. The text of Eikones takes up the tradition of literature and at the same time changes it through the creation of new combinations, always revealing the virtuosity of the author.
