In a period when multiple European vernaculars challenged the hegemony long held by Latin as the language of learning, translation assumed a heightened significance. Parce qu’il naît d’une crise de la confiance, le procès démontre combien les qualités humaines sont une valeur primordiale sur les marchés. Les hommes d’affaires, plus souvent chrétiens que juifs, doivent respecter une norme qui place l’équité au coeur de la cité. Cette étude d’histoire économique ouvre la voie à une histoire des juifs « désenclavée » et réhabilite l’usure. Alors que balbutie le stéréotype qui transforme le juif en usurier, les prêteurs issus de la communauté hébraïque se révèlent dignes de foi et membres du corps politique.

    Description: Female protagonists are commonly overlooked in the history of crime; especially in early modern Italy, where women’s scope of action is often portrayed as heavily restricted. This book redresses the notion of Italian women’s passivity, arguing that women’s crimes were far too common to be viewed as an anomaly. Based on over two thousand criminal complaints and investigation dossiers, Sanne Muurling charts the multifaceted impact of gender on patterns of recorded crime in early modern Bologna. While various socioeconomic and legal mechanisms withdrew women from the criminal justice process, the casebooks also reveal that women – as criminal offenders and savvy litigants – had an active hand in keeping the wheels of the court spinning.

Its history is epitomized by the life and works of the brothers Johan (1622-1660) and Pieter de la Court (1618-1685), two successful textile entrepreneurs and radical republican theorists during the apex of Dutch primacy in world trade.     Description: El cine forma parte hoy en día del patrimonio nacional. Sin embargo, la cuestión de la nacionalidad de los productos fílmicos está relacionada con diferentes aspectos: industrial, económico, historiográfico y estético. En cuanto al criterio oficial, se vincula habitualmente al espacio de producción; sin embargo, la nacionalidad del director de la película o de los actores, la ubicación de los espacios de rodaje, el idioma, o los acentos, la relación con unas corrientes estéticas o con géneros cinematográficos nacionalmente marcados pueden también ser considerados como tipos de clasificación. En España, el problema se plantea de forma más compleja que en otros muchos países ya que sobrepone casi de manera constante la nacionalidad regional o autonómica y la nación o las naciones. La película se convierte así en un territorio inestable y de difícil percepción, suponiendo interferencias que desacreditan cualquier análisis ignorante de la diversidad de los contextos. Por otra parte, el cine español ya no se puede concebir desconectado del resto de Europa, y la hispanidad sigue aportando elementos propios de una comunidad transnacional lingüística, cultural e histórica. Reflexionar sobre la nacionalidad en el cine supone explorar las interconexiones, las mezclas, las porosidades que ponen en tela de juicio una lectura limitada y estrecha de un concepto como el de «nación». Este es el camino por donde este libro pretende ir.

    Description: The personal diary that Modesto de la Torre wrote between 1821 and 1822 reflects the perceptions of a young royalist military man about a New Spain that was gaining independence from the Peninsula to become a Mexican Empire. The author traveled from Cadiz to Mexico City with the retinue that accompanied the last viceroy, Juan O'Donojú, and in his pages he describes the nature, towns and cities he passed through, as well as the political and military events that took place during those years. Anecdotes, both major and minor, are found in these brief chronicles. In addition, the dialogue with himself, through writing, is a means to exorcise the crisis of the culture of masculinity that was part of his imaginary. This crisis was largely caused by the nationalist discourse of the Mexicans and their military victories, which became the central theme of his reflections and is extensively analyzed in the study that precedes the transcription of the diary. The spontaneous and secret character of the Apuntaciones makes them a singular source for historians of the early 19th century, of nationalism, and of the little-known first-person writings in the Latin American world of the time.

    Description: During the early modern period, thousands of Jesuits across Europe wrote individual applications for appointments in the “Indies” directly to the superior general of the Society of Jesus in Rome. Known today as litterae indipetae (from Indias petere, that is, applying for the missions in the Eastern and Western territories), these letters encompassed the most personal desires, hopes, and dreams of young Jesuits who sought to become missionaries. This book is the first English monograph on litterae indipetae and studies their style and structure, the background of their authors and the reasons behind their choices, as well as the network surrounding this practice (natural and spiritual families, procurators, confrères). Its purpose is also to capture the experiences of these individuals since lost to history by studying thousands of indipetae, in this case written mainly by Italian Jesuits at the turn of the eighteenth century. It focuses especially on the petitions aimed at East Asia, and offers in-depth analysis of cases of Jesuits whose missionary zeal for China and Japan was fulfilled—or not.

For one who had been a small and roguish peasant in the region of Segovia, experiences had accumulated and his prominence had moved from Spain to New Spain, crossing the south of France until he reached Italy. It discusses ten different translations and adaptations, showing how the engravings, elegies and exegetical extracts of the original edition were used by Polish-speaking authors. Attention is also given to the reception of the engravings in paintings. Furthermore, the author examines the reasons for the book's popularity, proving that it was determined by the interest of women who did not know Latin, yet constituted the most important target group for the numerous and varied Polish adaptations.

    Description: Si le premier âge moderne a connu l'idée de nation, il n'y a pas mis les mêmes significations que celles qui émergent au xviiie siècle et s'imposent après la Révolution française. Par rapport à d'autres identités, l'appartenance nationale n'est ni exclusive, ni même souvent dominante. Elle n'en reste pas moins l'objet d'un intense processus de création culturelle, des cercles lettrés qui forgent des histoires nationales aux sphères dirigeantes qui lui donnent parfois un sens politique. Ce processus, tout comme les pratiques sociales liées à ce sentiment identitaire, n'est pas nécessairement lié à une structure politique et n'a rien de linéaire, comme le montre la confrontation entre les diverses expériences vécues dans l'Europe méditerranéenne aux xvie et xviie siècles. Le présent colloque s'est donné pour tâche de mettre en contact les recherches menées sur le sentiment national dans trois pays aux situations politiques radicalement différentes, qui conditionnent la diversité des questionnements historiographiques. En même temps, le lien partagé et souvent conflictuel au passé romain, les intenses relations culturelles, les rivalités politiques et dynastiques, la commune adhésion au catholicisme, non sans violence et contestations, créent des interactions et des dynamiques qui justifient cette réflexion commune sur les diverses formes du sentiment national dans l'Europe méditerranéenne de la première modernité.

Su propósito es demostrar que se puede hablar de secularización en España antes de que la noción tenga efectiva productividad jurídica y constitucional. El periodo elegido (1700-1845) es precisamente época clave de las interrogaciones sobre secularización de lo político; pero tales interrogaciones son heterogéneas, ya que la propia idea de secularización se pone a debate y está sometida a múltiples bloqueos. Parece empezar a funcionar entonces un proceso de secularización social y cultural antes que político. En efecto, la influencia secularizadora de las ideas de la Ilustración conlleva cambios sociales y nuevas prácticas culturales, científicas y artísticas, que transforman, hasta en el seno de la Iglesia, la percepción de lo sagrado. Tales cambios ocasionan, a principios del siglo xix, la ruptura de la convención entre la Monarquía, la Iglesia y la Nación.

    Description: The Crisis of Causality deals with the reaction of the Dutch Calvinist theologian Gisbertus Voetius (1589-1676) to the New Philosophy of René Descartes (1596-1650). Voetius not only criticised the Cartesian idea of a mechanical Universe; he also foresaw that shifting conceptions of natural causality would make it impossible for theologians to explain the relationship between God and Creation in philosophical terms. This threatened the status of theology as a scientific discipline. Apart from a detailed analysis of the Scholastic and Cartesian notions of causality, the book offers new perspectives on related subjects, such as seventeenth-century university training and the Cartesian method of science.
