    Description: Vigília Lula Livre. Um movimento de resistência e solidariedade aborda múltiplas facetas de um coletivo social que construiu um poderoso modo de resistência política e cultural acompanhando o ex-presidente Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva da vizinhança imediata da prisão. A Vigília Lula Livre foi estabelecida espontaneamente em 7 de abril de 2018 em frente à sede da Polícia Federal em Curitiba. Naquela noite, militantes de esquerda, partidários e partidárias que apoiavam o ex-presidente foram reprimidos pela polícia. Em vez de se sentirem intimidados, estabeleceram um acampamento na rua por cem dias. Então, começaram a organizar manifestações culturais e políticas para expressar sua solidariedade e construir um processo de resistência política original. A Vigília Lula Libre durou 580 dias, desde o momento em que Lula foi preso até sua libertação em 8 de novembro de 2019, deixando centenas de ensinamentos e se inscrevendo na longa tradição de lutas populares no Brasil e na América Latina.

    Description: Coeditado por la Facultad de Administración de Empresas, Universidad de Puerto Rico. En el 2015 un grupo de académicos y estudiantes puertorriqueños tuvieron la iniciativa de visitar Cuba, oportunidad en la que recibieron una serie de conferencias sobre una amplia gama de temas atinentes a la realidad cubana. En La Habana contaron con el apoyo de la Cátedra de Estudios del Caribe de la Universidad de La Habana. A esta se sumaron otras instituciones como el Instituto Superior de Relaciones Internacionales “Raúl Roa García". Fue una experiencia muy positiva para puertorriqueños y cubanos. Afortunadamente no quedó solo en interesantes conferencias e intercambios y visitas diversas. Más allá del enriquecimiento mutuo que significó el contacto directo entre boricuas y cubanos –que permitió conocernos mejor y constatar, una vez más, cuanto de común hay entre nosotros– nos lega esta interesante compilación de artículos.

    Description: Using the lenses of realism, liberalism, the English School and constructivism, this book explains how the divisions and differences in African identities affect African international politics. This book explores the African condition in the twenty-first century. It analyses how geographical, racial, ethnic, linguistic, religious and power differences shape continental and intercontinental relations in Africa through the creation of identities and values which militate against intra-continental or regional relations. The author assesses inclusionary and exclusionary, rational and irrational relationships, interactions and non-interactions which occur between geographical, linguistic, racial and religious entities in Africa. He suggests that, in these moments, one entity will negatively relate, interact or refuse to interact with another entity for the gains of the former and to the detriment of the latter or even to the detriment of both entities. Divided into two parts, the first part of the book employs an ecumenical approach to discuss the divisions and differences that disunite Africa as a continent and Africans as a people and how they affect African international politics. Part II goes on to explore how this ‘othering’ can be superseded by non-discriminatory, unifying and positive identities and values. Examining the possibility of creating identities and values that can unite Africa as a continent and Africans as a people, this book will be of interest to scholars of African politics, international relations and political theory.

Definitivamente, la coyuntura es ideal para debatir el tema del VIH y quien mejor que los, las y les activistas de nuestra región para hablarnos de la desesperación y el ostracismo padecido. Pero también, para que nos cuenten cómo a pesar de los estigmas y de las limitaciones, lograron buscar soluciones, se reunieron, organizaron y crearon un mejor futuro para las nuevas generaciones.

    Description: In Modern Slavery – A Comparative Study of the Definition of Trafficking in Persons Dominika Borg Jansson discusses why, despite international anti-trafficking efforts, there are so few trafficking convictions worldwide. In an easily accessible language, the author explains why international legal harmonization in this area has been difficult. Making use of the concept of legal transplants, Dominika Borg Jansson compares experiences from Sweden, Poland and Russia offering insights into especially Russian legislation that are not widely available. The problems concerning the implementation of the international definition of trafficking are here divided into country-specific challenges and obstacles attributable to the original source. Jansson also addresses the effectiveness of criminalization of trafficking and offers suggestions on how future trafficking legislation might be framed.

    Description: The year 2020 went down in economic history due to the dramatic and drastic changes in economic and social conditions that resulted from the outbreak of the global pandemic of COVID-19. This book offers a multi-level narrative about the pandemic, written from national and international perspectives, enabling the authors to construct several macro- and mega-scenarios. The book consists of six chapters. Four of them discuss the process of the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Europe in 2020, i.e. the directions and dynamics of the spread and its socioeconomic consequences, and provide a comparative analysis of fiscal and monetary packages employed by Europe, with an emphasis on Eastern European countries. The remaining two chapters contain forecasts and scenarios. The fifth chapter, dedicated to forecasts, provides readers with a comprehensive description of possible consequences of any epidemic leading to severe social losses such as high percentages of infected and dead, limited interpersonal contacts as a result of lockdown, a lowered level of general individual and social well-being, as well as economic losses, for example a decline in production as a result of the collapse of aggregate demand and a reduction in the supply capacity of the economy, consequently slowing down the pace of capital accumulation. The sixth, final chapter describes possible scenarios of the spread of the pandemic in Poland and Ukraine, depending on measures taken by the governments of those countries.     Description: Social and economic histories of the long eighteenth century have largely ignored women as a class of landowners and improvers. 1700 to 1830 was a period in which the landscape of large swathes of the English Midlands was reshaped – both materially and imaginatively – by parliamentary enclosure and a bundle of other new practices. Outside the Midlands too, local landscapes were remodelled in line with the improving ideals of the era. Yet while we know a great deal about the men who pushed forward schemes for enclosure and sponsored agricultural improvement, far less is known about the role played by female landowners and farmers and their contributions to landscape change. Drawing on examples from across Georgian England, Elite Women and the Agricultural Landscape, 1700–1830 offers a detailed study of elite women’s relationships with landed property, specifically as they were mediated through the lens of their estate management and improvement. This highly original book provides an explicitly feminist historical geography of the eighteenth-century English rural landscape. It addresses important questions about propertied women’s role in English rural communities and in Georgian society more generally, whilst contributing to wider cultural debates about women’s place in the environmental, social and economic history of Britain. El autoritarismo de nueva generacio´n registrado durante la segunda de´cada de este milenio definitivamente se ha exacerbado.     Description: I argue that the protagonist of Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” assumes the role of a power bottom for the purpose of delivering audiences who identify with the power-bottom role from shame, which is personified by Satan in the music video. Lil Nas X’s texts, the lyrics plus the video, empower power bottoms, and in doing so, Lil Nas X defies a long tradition of shaming the receptive male partner—a shame that is rooted in medieval ideologies. Beginning with a close reading, I analyze sexual power dynamics in the song lyrics, then the music video, before explaining how these two modes complement a narrative about sexual liberation from shame, particularly regarding the receptive male partner in sodomitic relationships. Then, compared to medieval constructions of sodomy in Peter Damian’s Liber Gomorrhianus (The Book of Gomorrah) and the Pearl Poet’s Cleanness, “Montero” is identified as a liberatory text that challenges both sexual norms and pervasive ideologies that limit the spiritual and intellectual freedoms of people of color in Western Christian traditions. “Montero” is a medievalism informed by Black Theology and queer activism to present a queer Black power bottom offering salvation from destructive social structures.

    Description: This chapter explores the relations between women, land, property and the law. The first part of the chapter outlines single, widowed and married women’s legal position as property owners, paying particular attention to the doctrines of primogeniture and coverture and their impact on women’s property rights. It explores the circumstances by which women most commonly became landowners, outlining the four main routes to landownership for women, as well as the practices by which married women were sometimes able to circumvent the restrictions of coverture. As a corollary to this, it also explores the impact of various changes to the early modern legal system – including the shift from dower to jointure arrangements, the emergence of strict settlement and the declining power of the ecclesiastical courts – on women’s property rights. The second half of the chapter sets out to assess the significance of women as a class of landowners in Georgian England, quantifying the scale of women’s landholding in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries using a large sample of data drawn from the parliamentary enclosure awards. In doing so, it responds to considerable uncertainty about the scale of women’s property ownership. Little quantitative information is available on the proportion of land owned by women, although a handful of studies have used rentals and leases to examine female landholding – as opposed to landownership – within small groups of manors. The results of the sampled enclosure awards are presented below, comparisons between this data and the earlier, smaller studies explored, and the new data used to throw light on four key issues: the legal and marital status of female landowners, the scale of individual female landowners’ holdings, the geography of female landownership and the thorny issue of change over time.

Socially unpopular cuts contributed to the occurrence of violent movements that both opposed austerity policies and created animosity towards the politicians who implemented them. Combining qualitative and quantitative comparative analyses from anti-austerity movements in 14 Eurozone states from 2007 to 2015, Joanna Rak develops an original typology of patterns of a culture of political violence to explain why some anti-austerity movements turned to violence and others did not, despite having shared goals and political values. She uncovers the very nature of the differences and similarities between cultures of political violence, identifies their sources, and determines their differing results.     Description: Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book raises new questions and provides different perspectives on the roles, responsibilities, ethics and protection of interpreters in war while investigating the substance and agents of Japanese war crimes and legal aspects of interpreters’ taking part in war crimes. Informed by studies on interpreter ethics in conflict, historical studies of Japanese war crimes and legal discussion on individual liability in war crimes, Takeda provides a detailed description and analysis of the 39 interpreter defendants and interpreters as witnesses of war crimes at British military trials against the Japanese in the aftermath of the Pacific War, and tackles ethical and legal issues of various risks faced by interpreters in violent conflict.The book first discusses the backgrounds, recruitment and wartime activities of the accused interpreters at British military trials in addition to the charges they faced, the defence arguments and the verdicts they received at the trials, with attention to why so many of the accused were Taiwanese and foreign-born Japanese. Takeda provides a contextualized discussion, focusing on the Japanese military’s specific linguistic needs in its occupied areas in Southeast Asia and the attributes of interpreters who could meet such needs. In the theoretical examination of the issues that emerge, the focus is placed on interpreters’ proximity to danger, visibility and perceived authorship of speech, legal responsibility in war crimes and ethical issues in testifying as eyewitnesses of criminal acts in violent hostilities. Takeda critically examines prior literature on the roles of interpreters in conflict and ethical concerns such as interpreter neutrality and confidentiality, drawing on legal discussion of the ineffectiveness of the superior orders defence and modes of individual liability in war crimes. The book seeks to promote intersectoral discussion on how interpreters can be protected from exposure to manifestly unlawful acts such as torture.

Este texto propone ubicar y pensar la crisis de México a nivel específico del estado, considerándolo en su doble faz de instrumento de dominación y promesa no inocua de bienestar y evitando salidas sencillas. Este tipo de crisis no es nuevo en la región latinoamericana, por lo que recurrimos a otras experiencias (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador y Venezuela) con ánimos de analizar qué podemos recuperar. El factor que nos permite la comparación con estos casos es la instancia de renovación constituyente: la convocatoria a renovar los acuerdos más básicos que nos ligan como pueblo. Pensamos la renovación constituyente no como simple recambio legal o técnico, sino como la convocatoria amplia a re-construir la nación a partir de acuerdos sociales básicos. ¿La figura del Congreso Constituyente es útil para estos fines? ¿cuál ha sido la experiencia al respecto en América Latina en el último movimiento constituyente? ¿Cómo se ven las perspectivas de México a la luz de esas experiencias? Estas son las preguntas que guían el texto.

    Description: En el ámbito estrictamente programático cada uno de los proyectos emancipatorios que hoy se citan en la arena político-intelectual (el del pensamiento decolonial, el de la profundización del Estado Democrático de Derecho o el del Socialismo) asume conceptualizaciones, a menudo inmanentes, de modernidad y colonialismo que resultan internamente problemáticas. Del mismo modo, parecen contradictorias las formas principales de conceptualización de la dupla modernidad/colonialismo entre los diversos proyectos. Todo ello hace imperativo explorar el alcance, los límites y las posibilidades de síntesis entre estas diversas aproximaciones. El análisis de las tensiones entre modernidad y colonialismo contribuye, sin duda, al examen de los méritos y problemas de cada uno de estos programas emancipatorios. Por una parte, la modernidad misma es disecada conceptualmente según las aspiraciones y compromisos de cada programa emancipador. Por otra, el colonialismo, dibujado en sus versiones economicistas, culturalistas, políticas, localistas o globalistas, o en mezclas matizadas, dependiendo del género emancipatorio que sostenga el pincel, parece indicar sentidos distintos a la resistencia y a las luchas sociales. El análisis de las tensiones entre modernidad y colonialismo ofrece así un espacio inigualable para pensar los alcances y problemas de cada una de estas formas de pensamiento emancipatorio latinoamericano.

    Description: O presente livro, à semelhança do precedente, Comentários a uma sentença anunciada: o processo Lula, pretende deslindar mais uma dessas fases processuais de exceção e surge como reação ao julgamento do recurso do chamado “Caso Triplex" pelos três desembargadores da 8a Turma do Tribunal Regional Federal da 4a Região (TRF4), João Pedro Gebran Neto, Leandro Paulsen e Victor dos Santos Laus que, por unanimidade, confirmaram a sentença condenatória do juiz de primeiro grau, Sérgio Fernando Moro, aumentando a pena do réu Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva para 12 anos e 1 mês de prisão pelos crimes de corrupção passiva e lavagem de dinheiro. Após convocatória que privilegiou autores dedicados ao direito penal e ao processo penal, bem como professores e advogados que trabalham com direitos humanos, os organizadores da coletânea receberam 40 contribuições de 52 autores que debatem os meandros do acórdão do TRF4, considerado como decisão já anunciada no resultado condenatório, dado o caráter excepcional e anômalo que assume na manipulação de prazos e procedimentos.

    Description: El presente libro es resultado de una serie de contribuciones hechas por destacados miembros del Grupo de Trabajo “Integración y Unidad Latinoamericana" a lo largo del año 2018. Originariamente inspiradas por el debate y los interrogantes surgidos durante la reunión anual del grupo realizada en Buenos Aires los días 06 y 07 de noviembre de 2017, cuyo propósito fue analizar la crisis del multilateralismo y su impacto sobre el hemisferio - con foco en los procesos de integración regional. En el mes siguiente de ese mismo año, se continuó profundizando en dicha discusión paralelamente a la realización de la Reunión Ministerial de la Organización Mundial de Comercio que sesionó en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Estas iniciativas impulsadas por el GT –como parte de un programa regional más amplio de los GT de CLACSO–, aborda en términos más especícos el análisis del punto de inexión o de reconguración del proceso de globalización y de su correspondiente sistema multilateral hegemónico, así como las implicancias que tales cambios conllevan para los esquemas de integración de América Latina y el Caribe. Estos fenómenos tienen como trasfondo el estallido de la crisis nanciera de 2008 en Estados Unidos y su posterior mutación en crisis global, la cual no ha podido ser superada del todo hasta ahora.

    Description: Heated debates about Muslim women's veiling practices have regularly attracted the attention of European policymakers over the last decade. The headscarf has been both vehemently contested by national and/or regional governments, political parties and public intellectuals and passionately defended by veil wearing women and their supporters. Systematically applying a comparative perspective, this book addresses the question of why the headscarf tantalises and causes such controversy over issues about religious pluralism, secularism, neutrality of the state, gender oppression, citizenship, migration, and multiculturalism. Seeking also to establish why the issue has become part of the disciplinary practices of some European countries but not of others, this work brings together an important collection of interpretative research regarding the current debates on the veil in Europe, offering an interdisciplinary scope and European-wide setting. Brought together through a common research methodology, the contributors focus on the different religious, political and cultural meanings of the veiling issue across eight countries and develop a comparative explanation of veiling regimes.     Description: Scholars have recently begun to study collections of Byzantine historical excerpts as autonomous pieces of literature. This book focuses on a series of minor collections that have received little or no scholarly attention, including the Epitome of the Seventh Century, the Excerpta Anonymi (tenth century), the Excerpta Salmasiana (eighth to eleventh centuries), and the Excerpta Planudea (thirteenth century). Three aspects of these texts are analysed in detail: their method of redaction, their literary structure, and their cultural and political function. Combining codicological, literary, and political analyses, this study contributes to a better understanding of the intertwining of knowledge and power, and suggests that these collections of historical excerpts should be seen as a Byzantine way of rewriting history.

    Description: This book examines the mobilization, role, and trajectory of women rescuers and perpetrators during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. While much has been written about the victimization of women during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, very little has been said about women who rescued targeted victims or perpetrated crimes against humanity. This book explores and analyzes the role played by women who exercised agency as rescuers and as perpetrators during the genocide in Rwanda. As women, they took actions and decisions within the context of a deeply entrenched patriarchal system that limited their choices. This work examines two diverging paths of women’s agency during this period: to rescue from genocide or to perpetrate genocide. It seeks to answer three questions: First, how were certain Rwandan women mobilized to participate in genocide, and by whom? Second, what were the specific actions of women during this period of violence and upheaval? Finally, what were the trajectories of women rescuers and perpetrators after the genocide? Comparing and contrasting how women rescuers and perpetrators were mobilized, the actions they undertook, and their post-genocide trajectories, and concluding with a broader discussion of the long-term impact of ignoring these women, this book develops a more nuanced and holistic view of women’s agency and the genocide in Rwanda. This book will be of much interest to students of gender studies, genocide studies, African politics and critical security studies.

    Description: Lottaz, Iwama, and their contributors investigate the role of neutral and nonaligned European states during the negotiations for the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Focusing on the years from the Irish Resolution of 1958 until the treaty’s opening for signatures ten years later, the nine chapters written by area experts highlight the processes and reasons for the political and diplomatic actions the neutrals took, and how those impacted the multilateral treaty negotiations. The book reveals new aspects of the dynamics that lead to this most consequential multilateral breakthrough of the Cold War. In part one, three chapters analyze the international system from a bird’s eye perspective, discussing neutrality, nonalignment, and the nuclear order. The second part features six detailed case studies on the politics and diplomacy of Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, and Yugoslavia. Overall, this study suggests that despite the volatile and dangerous nature of the early Cold War, the balance of the strategic environment enabled actors that were not part of one or the other alliance system to play a role in the interlocking global politics that finally created the nuclear regime that defines international relations until today. A valuable resource for scholars of nonproliferation, the Cold War, neutrality, nonalignment, and area studies.
