Beschreibung: Several volcanoes worldwide have shown changes in their stress state as a consequence of the deformation produced by the pressurization of a magmatic body. This study investigates seismic swarms occurring on the western flank of Mt. Etna in January 1997 - January 1998. Integrating seismic observations and geodetic data, we constrained the seismogenic fault system, and on the basis of stress tensor inversion and SHMAX analyses, we infer an inflating pressure source located at 5.5 km b.s.l. beneath the west portion of summit area. Evaluation of Coulomb failure stress (CFS) related to the proposed model, showed how a large part of the seismogenic fault underwent a significant CFS increase (500 kPa). We infer the presence of a sub-vertical faulted region, potentially weak, N50°E oriented beneath the western sector of Mt. Etna. This structure could be brought closer to failure thereby generating seismic swarms as the effect of elastic stress transfer induced by movement and/or overpressure of magmatic masses within the upper crust under the volcano.

Beschreibung: The marine sector of the Campi Flegrei caldera has started to be monitored over the long-term with a seafloor equipment deployed in the Gulf of Pozzuoli from 2008. The equipment includes a set of geophysical, oceanographic and environmental sensors integrated in a marine platform that was specifically designed for real-time monitoring. This platform, named CUMAS (Cabled Underwater Multidisciplinary Acquisition System), was installed in the center of the Gulf at about 2.5 km south of Pozzuoli where the sea depth is about 100 m [Iannaccone et al., 2010]. The CUMAS system consists of a seafloor module connected by cable to a buoy (elastic beacon type) equipped with autonomous power supply systems, real-time data- transmission devices and a weather station. The core of CUMAS is the seafloor module that contains geophysical and oceanographic sensors, in particular, a three-component broadband seismometer, a best in class three axis MEMS accelerometer, a low-frequency hydrophone and a high-resolution sea bottom pressure recorder. A single-point acoustic, three-component, water-current meter and a water-temperature sensor were also installed to monitor some water local physical parameters. A set of status sensors, which also included a digital compass and a two-component digital tilt-meter, were added to track the attitude of the module over the course of the experiment. The marine monitoring system transmits the data in real-time and is integrated into the Monitoring Center in Naples managed by INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano. A continuous GPS station has been installed since the end of 2011 on the top of the buoy. The elastic beacon buoy forms a structure which is rigidly connected by a mechanical cable to the ballast on the sea bottom, a submerged float at the base of the buoy maintains tension on the cable and ensure the overall buoyancy of the system. In this way, any vertical movement of the seafloor propagates rigidly to the emerged part of the buoy itself, allowing measurement of the vertical movement of the sea floor by the GPS station. The analysis of about 17 months of continuous GPS data, from January 2012 to May 2013, revealed an overall uplift of about 3-4 cm allowing a first measurement of vertical seafloor displacement in the Campi Flegrei caldera [De Martino et al., 2014]. A new opportunity to enhance the deployed system was given by a national project, EMSO-MedIT, which is providing the necessary resources to expand the data acquisition to other areas of the Gulf of Pozzuoli. New improved systems similar to CUMAS are going to be deployed in three additional marine sites of the Gulf of Pozzuoli and the existing tide gauges network will be renewed with state-of-art sensors. The overall new monitoring infrastructure will allow to extensively map the seafloor vertical displacement and to improve the interpretative models of the bradyseism phenomenon including a more accurate location of earthquakes in the marine areas and extending to lower magnitude values the detection of the seismic activity.

Beschreibung: Various modern applications of empirical electron density models need realistic structures of the electron density distribution with smaller scales than the model background. Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) produce three dimensional and time dependent disturbances of the background ionization. We present a TID model suitable to «modulate» large scale electron density distributions by multiplication. A model TID takes into account the forward tilt of the disturbance wave front, a distinct vertical structure, a fan type horizontal radiation characteristic, geometric dilution and attenuation. More complicated radiation patterns can be constructed by means of superposition. The model TIDs originate from source regions which can be chosen arbitrarily. We show examples for TID modulations of the background model family developed at Trieste and Graz (NeQuick, COSTprof and NeUoG-plas).

Beschreibung: Earthquakes beneath Vulcano (Aeolian Island, Italy) are associated with fracturing (single events and sporadic swarms of low magnitude) or related to processes of the geothermal system (Montalto, 1994). This latter processes is responsible for most of the background activity, which is represented by weak events originating at shallow depth under the La Fossa cone (H〈1.5 Km below sea level). In order to improved the Permanent Seismic Network (PSN) run by Catania Section of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV-CT) by installing additional 5 broad-band stations surrounding the La Fossa crater, to. In particular, on November 2005 along the north rim of La Fossa cone, 3 digital stations were installed with an array configuration; thereafter, in spring 2007 another two stations were installed at the southern base of the cone. All the stations are currently in continual transmission with Lipari Observatory. We considered about 1200 micro-earthquakes recorded from January 2004 to July 2007 associated with fluid dynamics processes. Studying 1007 of these events, six classes of events have been recognized by visual inspection, spectral and cross correlation analyses. Three episodes of increasing occurrence accompanying geothermal and geochemical anomalies have been recorded during this time period. The improved seismic network allowed the location of 55 events with unprecedented resolution and to highlight a space distribution depending on the classes of events. The events are located in the central and south-oriental sector of the cone at 500-1000 meter b.s.l. depth and events of each class seem clustering in preferential sectors.

Beschreibung: On 17th and 18th July 2001, several fractures opened on Mt. Etna southern flank generating different lava flows spreading both in Valle del Bove and towards Nicolosi. On 29th July the image spectrometer MIVIS was flown over Mt. Etna to acquire high-resolution images of the eruption. The MIVIS airborne campaign was planned simultaneously with TERRA, EO-1 and Landsat 7 satellite acquisitions, in order to compare hyperspectral and multispectral data referred to active lavas. This work focuses on the thermal mapping of lava flows, taking advantage of MIVIS sensor high technical performances. The MIVIS high spatial resolution allows a detailed analysis of the lava flow topographic distribution. Its 12 bit dynamic range consents an estimate of the temperature even for the «hottest» pixels. The main target of this work is the evaluation of the energy flux by means of remote-sensing techniques. Surface temperature analysis was performed on distinct lava flows using the dualband technique. These quantities were compared with the integrated temperatures retrieved using the MIVIS thermal infrared bands. The influence of topography was also considered in the flux calculation using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of Mt. Etna.

Beschreibung: Radar technology has for a long time used various systems that allow detection under high-resolution conditions, while emitting at the same time low peak power. Among these systems, transmitted pulse encoding by means of biphasic codes has been used for the advanced ionospheric sounder that was developed by the AIS-INGV ionosonde. In the receiving process, suitable decoding of the signal must be accomplished. This can be achieved in both the time and the frequency domains. Focusing on the time domain, different approaches are possible. In this study, two of these approaches have been compared, using data acquired by the AIS-INGV and processed by means of software tools (mainly Mathcad©). The analysis reveals the differences under both noiseless and noisy conditions, although this does not allow the conclusive establishment as to which method is better, as each of them has benefits and drawbacks.

Beschreibung: Results derived from analysing the ionosphere response to faint and bright solar flares are presented. The analysis used technology of a global detection of ionospheric effects from solar flares as developed by the authors, on the basis of phase measurements of the Total Electron Content (TEC) in the ionosphere using an international GPS network. The essence of the method is that use is made of appropriate filtering and a coherent processing of variations in the TEC which is determined from GPS data, simultaneously for the entire set of visible GPS satellites at all stations used in the analysis. This technique is useful for identifying the ionospheric response to faint solar flares (of X-ray class C) when the variation amplitude of the TEC response to separate line-on-sight to GPS satellite is comparable to the level of background fluctuations. The dependence of the TEC variation response amplitude on the bright flares location on the Sun is investigated

Beschreibung: The deviations of hourly f 0 F 2 from monthly medians for 20 stations in Europe during the period 1958-1998 are studied. Spectral analysis is used to show that, both for original data (for each hour) and for the deviations from monthly medians, the deterministic components are the harmonics of 11 years (solar cycle), 1 year and its harmonics, 27 days and 12 h 50.49 m (2nd harmonic of lunar rotation period L 2 ) periodicities. Using histograms for one year samples, it is shown that the deviations from monthly medians are nearly zero mean (mean 〈 0.5) and approximately Gaussian (relative difference range between %10 to %20) and their standard deviations are larger for daylight hours (in the range 5-7). It is shown that the amplitude distribution of the positive and negative deviations is nearly symmetrical at night hours, but asymmetrical for day hours. The positive and negative deviations are then studied separately and it is observed that the positive deviations are nearly independent of R12 except for high latitudes, but negative deviations are modulated by R12 . The 90% confidence interval for negative deviations for each station and each hour is computed as a linear model in terms of R12. After correction for local time, it is shown that for all hours the confidence intervals increase with latitude but decrease above 60N. Long-term trend analysis showed that there is an increase in the amplitude of positive deviations from monthly means irrespective of the solar conditions. Using spectral analysis it is also shown that the seasonal dependency of negative deviations is more accentuated than the seasonal dependency of positive deviations especially at low latitudes. In certain stations, it is also observed that the 4th harmonic of 1 year corresponding to a periodicity of 3 months, which is missing in f 0 F 2 data, appears in the spectra of negative variations.

Beschreibung: In open conduit volcanoes, volatile-rich magma continuously enters into the feeding system nevertheless the eruptive activity occurs intermittently. From a practical perspective, the continuous steady input of magma in the feeding system is not able to produce eruptive events alone, but rather surplus of magma inputs are required to trigger the eruptive activity. The greater the amount of surplus of magma within the feeding system, the higher is the eruptive probability.Despite this observation, eruptive potential evaluations are commonly based on the regular magma supply, and in eruptive probability evaluations, generally any magma input has the same weight. Conversely, herein we present a novel approach based on the quantification of surplus of magma progressively intruded in the feeding system. To quantify the surplus of magma, we suggest to process temporal series of measurable parameters linked to the magma supply. We successfully performed a practical application on Mt Etna using the soil CO2 flux recorded over ten years.

Beschreibung: In this paper hourly daily F2-layer critical frequency data recorded at Rome and one minute daily TEC data recorded at Florence were used and the relevant variabiles were calculated. It was concluded that there was no clear evidence as to how they correlated. In order to obtain a measure of the f 0 F 2 and TEC variability, the normalised differences df0 F2 and d TEC from the relevant monthly median values were also considered. Since no clear evidence could be obtained as of how df0 F2 and d TEC correlate, a new parameter, the ?Ap /?R ratio was tried. ?Ap was taken as the difference between the maximum value of Ap measured at the relevant disturbance and that corresponding at the beginning of the disturbance. ?R corresponded to the two above mentioned values of Ap. This parameter was compared to the differences of the corresponding df0 F2 values called ?df and d TEC values called ?dT. In wintertime, when ?A p /? R was negative, for the vast majority of the occurrences either ?df or ?dT was negative; ?df and ?dT were never observed to be negative at the same time whereas they were both positive in fewer than 10% of the observations. When ?A p /?R was positive then either ?df or ?dT were negative. In summertime when ?A p /?R was negative both ?df and ?dT were negative. When ?A p /?R was positive, while a positive ?df corresponded almost always to a positive ?dT, a negative ?df would equiprobably indicate either a positive or a negative ?dT.
