    Description: Historical research can be enhanced by methods and resources from various disciplines, ranging from psychology to computer linguistics. With a creative and innovative perspective on »things we think we know«, Milan van Lange presents a computer-assisted historical investigation into the role of emotions in dealing with consequences of World War II in the Netherlands. By »emotion mining« digitised sources, van Lange shows where emotions were present and how they were expressed and discussed in the political engagement with people who experienced long-term effects of the war, such as former collaborators and war criminals, the resistance, and war victims.

    Description: Religious studies have long discussed the comparative notion of »holy« beyond religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. In this book, Thomas Jurczyk conducts a diachronic comparison of the meaning and application of two notions and their related word fields that are commonly associated with a broader comparative notion of holy, namely the Ancient Armenian term »surb« and its related words and the English word field associated with »holy«. To compare these two semantic fields, his methodological approach operates on the principle of distributional semantics and applies, among others, tools and methods from the field of corpus linguistics.

    Description: América Latina atraviesa una marcada crisis ambiental, que está llevando al subcontinente a un colapso, entendido este como un cambio en la sociedad, y en la forma de vivir en la actualidad. Esta crisis ecológica se ha visto ahondada con la profundización del modelo económico neoliberal y del neoextractivismo, el cual ha generado una disputa por los bienes comunes. Al mismo tiempo en distintos territorios de la región se están desarrollando alternativas agroecológicas, cooperativas, redes de economía solidaria, eco-tecnologías apropiadas y nuevas construcciones societales basadas en paradigmas como el buen vivir, que van sembrando esperanzas de evitar el colapso, bajo el desarrollo de sociedades en movimiento que reflexionan y actúan en defensa de la madre tierra.

    Description: What distinguishes an adventure novel from a historical novel? Can the same text belong to several genres? More to one than to another? Have some existing genres been overlooked? To answer these and similar questions, José Calvo Tello combines methods from Linguistics (lexicography), Literary Studies (genre theory), and Computer Science (machine learning, natural language processing). Located in the interdisciplinary field of Digital Humanities, this study analyzes a newly developed corpus of 358 Spanish novels of the silver age (1880-1939), which includes authors like Baroja, Pardo Bazán, or Valle-Inclán. Calvo Tello's key result is a graph-based model of literary genre that reconciles recent theoretical approaches.

Without being obstructed by knowledge gaps or by references to concepts presented elsewhere, readers inside and outside sociology get the required support to explore sociological systems theory and to engage with it. Luhmann himself, in his introduction, praises the form of the glossary to cope with the challenges of the theoretical description of our highly complex society.

    Description: A part of sociology always wants to distance itself from any interference in the practice, and another part to influence society. In the first case, sociology sees itself as a science that looks at society from the outside. In the second case, she can not evade her affiliation with society. But what do these supposedly contradictory goals mean for sociologists and what does that say about the subject itself? Natalie Mevissen investigates the relationship of sociology to society with the help of hermeneutic interview analyzes and at the same time formulates conditions for a sociology of sociology in theory and methodology. She advocates a change of perspective: away from a problem discourse towards a perspective of the elective affinity of sociology with society.
    Description: Ein Teil der Soziologie will sich seit jeher von jeglicher Einmischung in die Praxis distanzieren, ein anderer Teil in die Gesellschaft hineinwirken. Im ersten Fall begreift die Soziologie sich als Wissenschaft, die von Außen auf die Gesellschaft schaut. Im zweiten Fall kann sie sich ihrer Zugehörigkeit zur Gesellschaft nicht entziehen. Was jedoch bedeuten diese vermeintlich widersprüchlichen Ziele für Soziolog*innen und was sagt das über das Fach selbst aus? Natalie Mevissen untersucht das Verhältnis der Soziologie zur Gesellschaft mit Hilfe hermeneutischer Interviewanalysen und formuliert zugleich Bedingungen für eine theoretisch wie methodologisch fundierte Wissenschaftssoziologie der Soziologie. Sie plädiert für einen Perspektivwechsel: weg von einem Problemdiskurs hin zu einer Perspektive der Wahlverwandtschaft der Soziologie mit der Gesellschaft.

    Description: Practices of comparing shape how we perceive, organize, and change the world. Supposedly innocent, practices of comparing play a decisive role in forming categories, boundaries, and hierarchies; but they can also give an impetus to question and change such structures. Like almost no other human practice, comparing pervades all social, political, economic, and cultural spheres. This volume outlines the program of a new research agenda that places comparative practices at the center of an interdisciplinary exploration.     Description: Prototypes migrate from the workshops to society. They are no longer considered deficient because of incomplete objects. Rather, it is through the design of the material provisional that the social day after tomorrow is shaped and technologised. The production and reception of these artefacts is transformed from an exclusive expert activity to a public social practice: Prototypes are produced in publicly accessible Makerspaces and celebrated in urban event formats. Sascha Dickel shows that this can also be accompanied by a new form of criticism that does not oppose the technologization of the social, but opens up ways to design alternative futures in a technologically integrated world.
    Description: Prototypen wandern aus den Werkstätten in die Gesellschaft. Sie gelten nicht länger als defizitäre, weil unvollständige Objekte. Vielmehr wird gerade durch das Design des materiell Vorläufigen das gesellschaftliche Übermorgen gestaltet und technologisiert. Die Produktion und Rezeption dieser Artefakte verwandelt sich dabei von einer exklusiven Expertentätigkeit zu einer öffentlichen sozialen Praxis: Prototypen werden in öffentlich zugänglichen Makerspaces hergestellt und in urbanen Eventformaten zelebriert. Sascha Dickel zeigt, dass damit auch eine neue Form der Kritik einhergehen kann, die nicht gegen die Technologisierung des Sozialen opponiert, sondern Wege erschließt, in einer technologisch verbauten Welt alternative Zukünfte zu entwerfen.
