Chacune fait l’objet d’une fiche illustrée décrivant son habitat, sa répartition, ses usages ainsi que ses caractéristiques chimiques et ses propriétés pharmacologiques. Thirty years on from the Convention on Biological Diversity from which it originated, the authors examine the legal and practical outcomes of this virtuous framework, which came into force in 2014. Although it has certainly fostered greater recognition of the plurality of knowledge and advanced the traceability of resources, the Protocol has also helped to impose a narrowly market-oriented understanding of nature and knowledge, exacerbating demands for recognition and ownership in the Global South, and effectively restricting access to biodiversity in an era of globalised research. This book presents an interdisciplinary dialogue informed by the experiences of researchers and conservation stakeholders (local communities, managers of collections and natural parks). Looking beyond the Nagoya Protocol, it invites us to question the relationships between societies and nature in light of the ecological emergency.     Description: Accord international majeur pour une gouvernance mondiale de la biodiversité, le protocole de Nagoya devait permettre d’en finir avec l’exploitation sans contrepartie des ressources naturelles et des savoirs des pays du Sud. Son objectif était d’assurer une plus grande justice et équité entre fournisseurs et utilisateurs de ressources génétiques, de rendre visibles les apports et savoirs des communautés autochtones et locales et de décoloniser la recherche, tout en assurant la conservation de la biodiversité. Trente ans après la Convention sur la diversité biologique qui lui a donné naissance, les auteurs s’interrogent sur les traductions juridiques et pratiques de ce cadre vertueux, entré en vigueur en 2014. S’il a permis de reconnaître la pluralité des savoirs et d’établir une traçabilité des ressources, il a également contribué à imposer une vision marchande de la nature et des savoirs, à exacerber les revendications identitaires et à complexifier l’accès à la biodiversité à l’heure d’une recherche mondialisée. L’ouvrage présente un dialogue interdisciplinaire à partir de retours d’expérience de chercheurs et d’acteurs de la conservation (communautés locales, gestionnaires de collections et de parcs naturels). Au-delà du protocole de Nagoya, il invite à s’interroger sur les relations entre les sociétés et la nature à la lumière de l’urgence écologique. Il s’adresse à tout public intéressé par l’économie de la biodiversité et la justice environnementale.

    Description: The equilibrium of inland hydrosystems is presently a cause for concern, with species extinction rates there estimated to be 5 times higher than for terrestrial fauna in the 21st century. Urgent measures must be taken to conserve these ecosystems particularly with regard to fishes, which represent an especially rich and diverse evolutionary heritage. Fishes were long unaffected by human activity on the African continent, but anthropogenic pressure has increased in recent decades. Good management of African continental waters is thus of paramount importance in terms of heritage and economics, as fishes are a vital natural resource for the people in sub-Saharan Africa. In view of biodiversity conservation, African fishes are investigated here as a biological model owing to their enormous ecological and genetic diversity. It is essential to know the ecology and structure of various communities, and to understand the impact of human activity. This book discusses the diversity of environments, the origin and evolution of species, survival and adaptive strategies, the structure of fish communities, and the impact of human activity. It also devotes a section to fisheries and fish culture. Entre forêt tempérée andinopatagone forêt valdivienne pluvieuse, forêt subantarctique, steppes, végétations rases de haute altitude, la flore de Patagonie est à la fois variée et originale, selon les régions, elle présente des affinités avec la flore du reste de l’Amérique du Sud, de l’Amérique du Nord, mais également avec celle de l’Océanie, et notamment de la Nouvelle-Zélande et elle montre par ailleurs un taux important d’endémisme. Traduit et augmenté à partir d’une première édition bilingue (espagnol/anglais) publiée en 2008 (éditions Vázquez Mazzini Editores, Buenos Aires), ce guide naturaliste offre au non-spécialiste une présentation des familles botaniques les plus caractéristiques de la Patagonie argentine et chilienne. Au total 95 familles sont décrites, avec les principaux genres et espèces et leur habitat spécifique. Chaque famille est illustrée par une ou plusieurs espèces, le plus souvent indigènes. Instead, this misfire demonstrates a failure to appreciate a crucial step in pragmatic problem solving: systems integration. The first book to address the underlying premises of systems integration and how to exposit them in a practical and productive manner, Engineering Systems Integration: Theory, Metrics, and Methods looks at the fundamental nature of integration, exposes the subtle premises to achieve integration, and posits a substantial theoretical framework that is both simple and clear. Offering systems managers and systems engineers the framework from which to consider their decisions in light of systems integration metrics, the book isolates two basic questions, 1) Is there a way to express the interplay of human actions and the result of system interactions of a product with its environment?, and 2) Are there methods that combine to improve the integration of systems?
