Beschreibung: Fishballs from six local factories were stored at 5°C for 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10 days. There were no changes in texture at 3 days of storage but bacterial spoilage rendered the fishballs unacceptable by the fourth day. Most of the bacteria were non-halophilic. The main genera isolated were Aerococcus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Micrococcus, Streptococcus, and Enterobacteria. Hazards and critical control points have been identified at various stages of fishball processing.

Beschreibung: The contamination of cockles by bacteria of faecal origin was monitored during harvesting, at landing sites, and finally at the retail market. The study was carried out in the three major cockle-producing states of Penang, Perak and Selangor. Cockles from the retail markets were found to be the most contaminated with an average FC-MPN/g count of 177 compared with figures of 62 for harvested cockles and 89 for washed cockles. The state of Penang showed the worst contamination having an average FC-MPN/g count of 242 compared with 119 for Perak and 60 for Selangor. Data from harvesting and landing sites for Penang and Perak showed high contamination levels of FC-MPN/g counts of 318 & 153 and 41 & 118 respectively. However, data from Selangor showed corresponding average FC-MPN/g counts of 17 & 13, figures below the Singapore standard. Basically, results of this study emphasized the need to improve the post-harvest handling of cockles and to depurate them prior to marketing.

Beschreibung: This paper presents data on the first identification, characterization and quantification of hepatotoxic microcystins and neurotoxic anatoxin-a in water samples of Lake Baringo, Kenya. The shallow turbid Lake Baringo was investigated five times between June 2001 and May 2002. The phytoplankton community was mainly dominated by the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. Due to the high turbidity the phytoplankton biomass was low, ranging between 1.5 and 8.2 mg L-1. High mean total phosphorus concentration (1.0 mg L-1) and mean total nitrogen concentration (2.8 mg L-1) typical for hypertrophic lakes were found. Using HPLC technique the hepatotoxins microcystin-LR, -RR and -YR and the neurotoxin anatoxin-a were detected in the water samples. The microcystin concentrations varied from 310 to 19800 μg microcystin-LR equivalents g-1 DW and the anatoxin-a concentration ranged from 270 to 1260 μg g-1 DW. To our knowledge this is the first evidence of cyanobacterial toxins in Lake Baringo.

Beschreibung: In recent years significant momentum has occurred in the development of Internet resources for decision makers and scientists interested in the coast. Chief among these has been the development of coastal web atlases (CWAs). While multiple benefits are derived from these tailor-made atlases (e.g., speedy access to multiple sources of coastal data and information), the potential exists to derive added value from the integration of disparate CWAs, to optimize decision making at a variety of levels and across themes. This paper describes the development of a semantic mediator prototype to provide a common access point to coastal data, maps and information from distributed CWAs. The prototype showcases how ontologies and ontology mappings can be used to integrate different heterogeneous and autonomous atlases, using the Open Geospatial Consortium’s Catalogue Services for the Web.
